Picking up where Chris Owen's Converge left off, Finn has crossed into Ari's dimension, but now what? He's a man without a past, without papers, and he can't get home. Now that he and Ari are together in body as well as spirit, they can move their relationship forward. But the uncertainty of Finn's status, and Finn's unfamiliarity with Ari's dimension, are definitely standing in their way.
On top of that, something strange is going on. People in Ari's dimension are not only disappearing, they're reappearing again days later. Tracking the news and combining it with the information he has about dimensions and Between, Finn begins to suspect that his appearance in Alpha and these strange happenings are connected for sure.
As he and Ari work together to help Finn adjust to Ari's life, their quest for a way to restore communication with Alpha begins. Through some clues from Alpha, and an unexpected revelation about Finn's friend Blake, Finn and Ari find someone who might be able to help him. But is the potential cost to them -- and to Finn's friends and family back in Alpha -- worth the attempt?
I live and write in eastern Canada. I went to a bunch of schools, learned a lot of things, and now make stuff up because not to do so is unthinkable. I'm fond of fountain pens, Levenger's Circa system, and Steampunk fashions. I'm inspired by the day to day minutia of life, and find beauty in the way words go together. I like texture and richness of experience. I'm not shy. I'm happy, I'm learning, I'm living.
When you put "Converge" and "Merge" together to make up the one actual novel, it's pretty good. Not as emotionally intense a read as other books I've read by Chris Owen, but pretty enjoyable. Publishing in two parts when neither makes it as a stand-alone (and neither is all that long, so it's not like breaking up the huge number of words in, say, The Lord of the Rings ...) well, that just doesn't make much sense.
Okay, I'm rating these two together as they seemed like 1 book to me, not 2 separate stories. I loved the relationship between Finn and Ari - this was best in book two as they were in the same dimension. I mean I think they were hot together, I really liked them. I liked the secondary characters. I liked the sci fi premise - but I don't feel this was delivered on as much as it could have been.
Now I'm not a big sci fi reader but there was so much potential for this element of this book that I was slightly disappointed with it. I loved the romance but it did feel like the the whole two dimensions thing was just a way to try and make getting these two together a bit different. It was a good book - expand the promised storyline it could have been a great book.
I'm still going to read other stuff by Chris Owen because I really loved the relationship in the book - and after all it is a romance!
I really enjoy parallel or other dimension type fics. I was really hoping, though, that there would be more indepth plot of that. There was quite a bit in the first book, which had me hooked, and really had me chompiing at the bit to get to the second one. I really enjoyed the smexy times, but I'm looking for books that are more plot rich these days, but still have that M/M dynamic. This one just missed it.
I also felt the author lost the characterizations of her characters. I was lost in parts of the story because the two people weren't like the two people in the previous book. I also feel like the ending was rushed... a hurry up and let's end this thing.
But over all, I really liked these two books, and I would recommend them to potential readers. Chris Owens is one of my favorite authors, and I am looking forward to reading more from this author!
Applies to books 1 and 2 - separately, would rate 2*. The 2 books should have been issued as 1 book since that's what it is. I don't appreciate that it was split into 2. Writing, characters and story were all good.
