This Splat the Cat adventure by bestselling author and illustrator Rob Scotton is both funny and endearing. Energetic art and hilarious text make Splat the Cat and the New Baby a perfect addition to this classic, lovable series.

An honors graduate of Leicester Polytechnic, Rob now lives in Rutland, England, with his wife, Liz, who is also an artist.
This is a new book from Rob Scotton. We got it fresh from the library. It was published on May 8th and we borrowed it on the 10th! Good thing my daughter caught it.
Keep in mind that this is actually from Scotton, not one of those books that say inspired by or based on the series by Scotton. The difference shows. The drawing are better, the stories have more elements, they're funnier, etc.
This time we go back in time, before Splat's sister (the one teasing him on Merry Christmas) was born. Splat is told that a new baby will soon come and he gets to work, with a little bit of help from his dad. He gets everything ready for the baby. A baby will come, but with a twist.
One of our favourite scenes is when Splat is changing a diaper and is wearing some sort of hazmat suit.
Splat and the New Baby is a book about a cat named Splat and his new baby brother Urgle who happens to be a crocodile. Even though Urgle's mom is just away on a trip, Splat decides that he will be Urgle's big brother and "try his best" to help even though being a big brother is hard work. Later on in the book, Splat's parents tell him that he's going to be an amazing big brother to his actual new sibling that his mom is pregnant with.
The major theme of this book is being a helpful older sibling to a new baby. Splat's parents seem to be doing a 'test drive' with baby Urgle to see if Splat will take to his new baby brother/sister well.
I remember my parents reading this book to me when my mom was pregnant with my sister. I was so excited to be a big sister and my parents made sure that I felt included in the process of taking care of her.
I recommend this book to families that are expecting their second child. It's difficult going from an only child to being a sibling that's expected to share. It's a great book for families that are adopting as well since Splat's brother looks different than the rest of his family but still needs a big brother.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I liked that it is more funny and lighthearted than other children's books on the subject. I didn't like that Splat becomes a "big brother" to Urgle for only a few days; I worry that Splat will want to "return" his new baby sibling too when they are born. Ultimately, I think this could've been a good book if it had been about becoming a big brother to a foster sibling for a time OR if it had been about the new baby sibling actually being born and brought home. Unfortunately, I think this book is confusing as it is currently written because Splat "becomes" (not "acts as") a big brother for a few short days or perhaps even hours before the baby is returned to thier mom. I also hate when books make a big deal about "stinky" diapers, as I don't think kids should be made to feel ashamed about normal body functions. This book shows Splat changing the baby's diaper while wearing a hazmat suit, looking as if he might hurl, and the diaper has the "poison" skull symbol on it. Yes, I recognize children find it funny; I personally dislike that.
Splat finds out from his mom there will soon be a new baby in the house. Splat prepares by helping his dad prepare for the little visitor, but when Splat sees the baby for the first time he is totally surprised, but he does his best to help out, and be a big brother. This colorful, and funny story will bring a smile to its readers.
Another good Splat story. Splat is asked by his mother to help her take care of a neighbor child. Splat steps up to the plate. At the end it is announced that Splat's mother is expecting and he will soon have an actual younger sibling.
Splat the cat is getting everything ready for Mama to bring home a new baby but what happens when he doesn't like the new baby? cute and unexpected twists. preschool and up
Splat's mom is going to have a baby! They babysit the neighbor baby (a crocodile) to practice being a good older brother. I love the positivity and excitement around being an older sibling.
This was a super cute book. I loved that my daughters chose this book. We are expecting a baby soon and that’s all they can talk about. They’re more excited than my husband and I.
I love how Splat is so good at helping with the baby. I think when little ones see how Splat helps with the baby that they will be more likely to want to help with the baby as well.
