Hardy Heroines #3

The Highlander's Crusader Bride

Rate this book
Born in the Holy Land only a few years after the Third Crusade, half-Armenian, half-Scot Arbela MacLean is a true daughter of the desert, beautiful and untamed. Trained to be a warrior to avoid her gentle mother’s fate, Arbela has honed her skills with Turkish bow and arrow, sword and throwing darts—and dreads the day her father choses a man for her to marry.

After more than thirty years in the Holy Land, Donal MacLean, Baron of Batroun, is recalled to Scotland, the last son available to take up leadership of clan MacLean. He brings with him knights, treasure, trade—and a daughter of marriageable age.
Caelen MacKern, known as the Bull of the Highlands, is cynical about women. His first marriage formed an alliance, and he did not grieve when his spoiled, immature bride passed away. He has agreed to marry again—against his better judgement—for the men, means and coin to recover from a devastating pestilence that all but wiped out his clan.

Though more than a little resentful at finding himself forced to remarry, Caelen’s proposal to Donal MacLean’s headstrong daughter nevertheless piques her interest. Each will receive what they want most from life—the ability to live as they please without interference from a meddling spouse. But their marriage of indifference will soon change to one of passion that neither Arbela nor Caelen could have predicted.

Do you enjoy a colorful bit of history with your romance? Many second and third sons—Scots and English alike—took to the Crusades for a chance at glory and riches. Donal MacLean of our story followed Richard Lionheart to the Holy Land where he won the notice of Bohemond IV of Antioch, Count of Tripoli. He joined the prince’s service and was soon made Baron of Batroun, residing at Mseilha Castle where he guarded St. William’s Pass on the road from Tripoli to Beiruit. Donal, now Baron of Batroun, married an Armenian princess and settled down to live his life in the Holy Land.

Recalled some thirty years after he first left Scotland, his daughter Arbela, with her exotic eyes, dusky skin, and voluptuous body—heritage of her Armenian mother—will turn heads and engender gossip in Scotland where praises are sung to pale-skinned, bright-haired lasses, and her colorful clothing will raise more than a few eyebrows.

THE HIGHLANDER'S CRUSADER BRIDE by DD & Cathy MacRae is book three in the " Hardy Heroines" series. This is the story of Arbela and Caelen. I have read the previous book in this series but feel this can be a standalone book.
Caelen has been married before to help build the Clan family. Caelen first wife was spoiled and with no real feelings, so when she died, Caelen didn't grieve. Now it appears that he will have to step forward again to marry to help the Clan but he feels he needs to make a better match.
Arbela is a strong women who tries to make sure she is not weak like her mother had been; Arbela is a warrior. Arbela and Caelen do reach an agreement to make sure that each get what they want most.
I thought their story was really exciting....one I didn't want to put down.

(Hardy Heroines #3)

Arbela MacLean was born in the Holy Land a few years after the Third Crusade. She is half Armenian and half Scot, but she is a true daughter of the desert. She is a rare beauty and trained to be a warrior to avoid what happened to her Mother. Arbela has perfected her skill with the Turkish bow and arrow, sword, and deadly throwing darts. She also dreads the day her father chooses a man for her to marry.

Donald MacLean, Baron of Batroun has spent more then 30 years in the Holy Land, but has been recalled to Scotland being the last son available to lead clan MacLean. He brings many knights, treasure, trade, and a daughter of marriageable age.

Caelen MacKern may be known as the bull of the Highlands, but he's more then cynical about women. His first marriage may have formed an alliance, but he was saddled with an immature, spoiled wife, and did not grieve for her when she passed away. Now he has agreed to marry again (even though he really doesn't want to) for the men, means, and coin to recover from a deadly pestilence that almost wiped out his clan.

Caelen is more then resentful at finding himself forced to remarry again. Caelen's proposal to Donald MacLean's headstrong daughter does pique her intrest. They have decided that they will each have what they want most from life. They will have the ability to live as they please without interference from a meddling spouse. But their marriage soon changes to one that neither of them expected. Will they start to get closer to one another? Will they be able to share their lives as a couple or will they just stay the way they were living out their lives separately?

Cathy and DD MacRae weave an incredible tale that you won't want to miss. Just when you think things are going to slow down they take you down another road. This book grabbed my attention from the get go and I couldn't put it down. This is definitely one talented duo that know what their readers want.

The Highlander’s Crusader Bride by Cathy & DD MacRae is a delightful and very impressive Medieval Romance. Book 3 in the "Hardy Heroines" series, but can be read as a stand alone.
This the story of Arbela MacLean, a half-Armenian, half-Scot and a true daughter of the desert. She is beautiful and untamed, as well as trained to be a warrior. Arbela has honed her skills with Turkish bow and arrow, sword and throwing darts, she dreads the day her father choses a man for her to marry. Well her day has come.....Enter Caelen MacKern, aka Bull of the Highlands, is cynical about women. After his first marriage ended in diaster, he did not even grieve when she died. She was spoiled, and immature bride. But he loves his son. He would do anything including marrying again for coin, alliance and the help they can give to save his starving clan.

Fast paced, well written with engaging characters and a plot that flows seamlessly and will keep you glued to the pages. I absolutely adored Arbela and Caelen! They are perfect for each other and of course you gotta love Caelen's son. Filled with passion, danger, romance, betrayal, clans coming together to help each other, of course turmoil and finding a HEA. A not to miss tale of learning to love, with a few surprises, and some twists and turns. I couldn't stop turning pages, I was so entranced and entralled with Arbela and Caelen's story. Thete's something for everyone. Pick up your copy today!

REVIEW: 4.25 stars THE HIGHLANDER’S CRUSADER BRIDE is the third instalment in Cathy MacRae’s adult HARDY HEROINES historical, Highlander romance series. This is half-Armenian, half Scot Arbela MacLean, and Caelen MacKern’s story line.

Told from dual third person perspectives (Caelen and Arbela) THE HIGHLANDER’S CRUSADER BRIDE is a stand alone story line that follows the marriage of convenience between half-Armenian, half Scot Arbela MacLean, and Laird Caelen MacKern, leader of Clan MacKern in the Western Highlands of Scotland. Death and disease has ravaged the MacKern Clan, and with it comes the struggles to feed and support the numerous bodies within the Keep. To add insult to an already suffering Clan, Laird MacKern’s former father in law seeks revenge against the Laird for the untimely death of his daughter, Caelen’s first wife, plundering small herds and burning down the outlying crofts. Enter Laird Donal MacLean, who offers up his twenty year old daughter Arbela MacLean in exchange for provisions, repairs and additional security. What ensues is the marriage of convenience between the independent and warrior-trained Arbela MacLean, and Laird Caelen MacKern, and the potential fall out as Laird MacGillonay demands custody of Caelen’s only son attacking the Clan and the woman with whom Caelen is falling in love.

Arbela MacLean is half-Armenian, half-Scot, and royalty by birth, but our heroine is unlike any of the Scottish woman Caelen has ever met or seen. Warrior trained in both the defensive and offensive ways of war, the head-strong but beautiful Arbela is a one-woman army unto herself. Darker skinned with an attitude to match, Arbela will become the victim of racist slurs and savage attacks that accompany her marriage to a Scottish Laird. Five years earlier Caelen MacKern’s wife died leaving our hero a single father with a one-year old son. Discouraged by his first marriage Caelen vows never to remarry as he battles to maintain control of his struggling Clan. A marriage of convenience will aid in the resurrection of the MacKern Clan but a marriage that is doomed to fail as both Caelen and Arbela refuse to accept anything beyond a marriage in name only.

There is a large ensemble cast of secondary and supporting characters. Not everyone is true to the MacKern Clan-there are traitors in the midst, some closer than others. The introduction of Bram MacKern softens our heroine’s heart as she grows to love the child as her own.

The relationship between Arbela and Caelen begins as an arrangement. Arbela had no plans for marriage; and Caelen refuses to enter into a marriage with another unhappy wife. Their unwritten agreement to keep separate lives is quickly extinguished when their palpable sexual attraction is heightened by threats against the people they love. The $ex scenes are intimate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

THE HIGHLANDER’S CRUSADER BRIDE mixes historical facts with fiction creating a wonderful story line about two people pulled together by circumstance and love. There are moments of betrayal and devotion, hatred and friendship, discrimination and acceptance, romance and love. The premise is entertaining, revealing and engaging; the characters are real, colourful and charismatic; the romance is passionate and slow to build. Cathy MacRae adds another dimension to her Hardy Heroine’s –a series of strong, independent and beautiful women who find the courage to live and love.

t was hard for me to rate this story because I loved it up until the last chapter. On one hand, the issue I had was a big one—almost big enough to ruin the whole thing. On the other hand, I couldn’t quite justify tanking everything that came before just because of a bumbled external conflict resolution.

The characters of Caelen and Arbela were well-developed and believable. They were strong, independent, and stubborn in their own ways, but not to the point of being unreasonable. Their love wasn’t instant or easy, and its development was actually much more realistic than many romances I’ve read. The personal concerns, ideals, and hang-up’s each brought to the marriage were legitimate rather than just token, trivial devices to drive the plot, and they had to work through them instead of casting them aside at the first stirrings of attraction. This was probably my favorite aspect of the story, as there don’t seem to be many authors who can cultivate such a blossoming of true regard, affection, and passion without making it feel contrived or forced. And when they finally decide to take things further than a business arrangement…damn, did Ms. MacRae reward us for the wait!

But this story had a lot more going for it than just the growing heat between Caelen and Arbela. Seeing their relationship and interaction with Bram added an innocent aspect to things and helped to brighten the mood when it got a little too serious. He was a sweet addition to the going’s-on and adorably light-hearted…but don’t make the mistake of thinking he’s just a cotton-candy-fluff addition. He’s integral to the external conflict, which was just as well developed as the romance, and Ms. MacRae treated it with a surprisingly subtle hand at times.
Soooo, now we need to talk about that last chapter. Things were going SO WELL, the tension was cranked up, the stakes were high, and things were literally on fire…and then they fell flat on their face in the mud. Why? Because Arbela acted contrary to her previously established, story-long character, and not in a small, unimportant way. The entire resolution to the conflict hinged on her derailment, which was extremely aggravating. It was clear that Ms. MacRae either had a specific idea about how things came to an ultimate head or she couldn’t find another way to resolve it, so she just changed Arbela to suit her purposes. Not cool.

On a side-ish note: I’m not sure if I got an ARC or a published copy, but either way, the editing could have used some work. There were errors (missing letters in words, misspelling of names, etc.) that even a simple spellcheck would have flagged, but that somehow made it into the copy I received. Even if this WAS an ARC, there’s no excuse for some of what I stumbled across.

Bottom line: This was a fabulous historical romance, with the exception of last chapter. I haven’t read the preceding Hardy Heroines books, but this one stood on its own just fine. I highly recommend this author and this story for anyone who loves a good medieval setting with an intriguing plot.

It's official. I love this author/writing pair and their work. When I read the previous book in the series, they entered my will-read list of author. And with this book, they've just confirmed their place in my historical romance must-read list.

Where should I start in my praise? Is is the lush and vivid historical setting that transport you back on an adventure or the beautiful details that pull you into a scene and yet doesn't distract you from witnessing the actions unfold.

And of course I have to mention the characters because these stories are about them--capable and confident men that are not cowered by the feisty and fearless women they are matched with.

And you don't get more fearless than Arbela. She is a demon with a bow and arrow and you certainly don't want to be opposite her in battle. She is one fierce lady and I loved her.

Of course like every other woman of her class in the historical setting, she is expected to accept a marriage arranged by her sire. She doesn't want to get married, certainly not to some Scottish Laird when she'd rather be defending a Christian Keep in the The Holy Land from the Saracens.

Caelen doesn't want a wife. Not after a disastrous loveless first marriage. But he needs a partnership with the MacLeans, which means marriage to Arbela.

They come to an agreement. So the questions becomes, will a marriage of convenience morph into a marriage of passion? Arbela needed to loosen up and Caelen needed to lay the ghost of the past to rest. I must say, I really wanted these two to fall in love with each other.

A wonderful read and one I highly recommend to fans of medieval/Scottish/historical romance.

I adore historical romances, and this one hit the nail on the head. Historical tidbits, adventure and romance. Didn't hurt that the setting is mostly Scotland, with the romance between a Scottish Laird and a half-Scots and Half Armenian Princess.

Arabela, is a head strong and independent woman, trained in sword play, strategy and some finer arts of war. She fights along side her father and brother to hold their tower in the holy land. Upon being called back to Scotland, Her father decides she should wed....she is of course less than happy with that decision. Caelen MacLaren, Laird of his clan, a clan that has recently been decimated by measles... his first wife, an unfeeling shrew, who rejected him and their son, has died...Caelen has vowed to never marry again. These two strike a bargain for an "in name" only marriage...but will it stand the test of danger against Bram, Caelen's young son? Can it remain in name only has they get to know each other and sparks fly?

A quick and fun read, with plenty of romance, danger and adventure. The writing is easy to follow and moves along at a good pace. This is the 3rd book in the series, but feel it can also be read as a stand alone, I haven't read the others and found no problems.

* I was given an advanced copy by authors pal, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

You know when you want to pick up a book and get lost in the story, picture the scenes and characters, and just chill, then this one is for you. Cathy and DD have brought the sexy Highlander and the feisty heroine to life in their writing, It had my attention from the very first page, but then that's nothing new.

Arabela is half Armenian and half Scottish and was born and grew up in the Holy Land, she was trained to be a warrior and was quite skilled at it, when her father is called back to Scotland, she naturally goes back with him and as she's at a marriageable age, her father starts looking.

Caelen was married before, but his deceased wife was spoilt and immature and so his experience of marriage wasn't very good, when an outbreak almost wipes out his clan, he is forced to reconsider marrying.

Now here's the question,

Can love conquer an independent warrior and a disillusioned Highlander, find out by picking up this fabulous book, I don't think you'll be disappointed, I know I wasn't.

I received an ARC and voluntarily leave my honest opinion

An outstanding story!

This writer did her historical homework on many pages except the plaid (sigh, 16th century) and sporran which did not come into use until 1823 but blame Hollywood and Braveheart for that continually repeated repeated fallacy. It is the rare, brave writer who puts medieval Scotsmen in their proper clothes of knee length tunics because that’s not as sexy as a hunk in a plaid, eh?

I was smitten by the introduction and Mediterranean background of Arbella, the half Armenian female heroine, and was delighted when I read the description of the Venetian sailing vessel and why it could head into the wind as well as away. Those are the types of details that make a story hold this reader’s interest and I appreciated them. The characters are very well drawn against a colorful background, their interactions ring true and the story arc is smooth with several surprising plot twists. A very enjoyable find on Kindle Unlimited.

Cathy and DD Mac Rae once again did an excellent job with this novel. I couldn't wait to start reading and I didn't want the story to end. This book is a keeper and I will re-read it. Arbela is half Armenia and half Scot. She is a warrior with honor and spirit, her skills are the sword, bow and throwing stars. She also has special skills that she doesn't let people know about. Caelen is the Laird of a clan that has almost been destroyed with an outbreak of measles. His dead wife's father wants his son and heir, and will get him by any means. Caelen's first marriage wasn't what he thought it would be and he doesn't want to marry again. Arbela doesn't want to marry, as she believes that she will have to give up her independence but her father says it's time marry. They both set their terms for the marriage, then life and love take them on a wonderful ride.

This is Book 3 in the Hardy Heroines series but can easily be read as a standalone.

DD & Cathy MacRae have created an epic tale of times past. Where similarities between society is evident but examples of the independence we hold now clear. Their story challenges the views of that era and our own whilst weaving a tale of growth and open mindedness. Caelen and Arbela both find their world view challenged and have to learn to accept difference without changing themselves.

I struggled with the story when they arrived at Scotland but that was my feminist shackles rising. This story had me enthralled from beginning to end, painting a unique picture into times past. It fed my need for stories and I loved how that was incorporated into it.

I love the flow of words and how smooth the book reads. I look forward to reading more of them, time to start one clicking.

This story gives you a glimpse of what it might’ve been like for young brave female that learned how to take care of herself in the 13th century. She has knowledge and resources and isn’t afraid to use them.

Arbela MacLean is smarter and more cunning than your average lass. She has a tender side as well. She loves her father and twin brother fiercely. Truth be told, I wouldn’t mind seeing more of Alex.

Caelen MacKern wasn’t an over the top alpha. He admits his mistakes and learns from them. He’s humble and doesn’t let his guard down.

THE HIGHLANDER'S CRUSADE BRIDE held my attention thoroughly and completely. It’s a wonderful mix of history, culture and slow burn romance. Definitely a page-turner!

Two words - too long. It was so full of redundancy, it was actually painful to read. I skipped pages, sometimes even chapters just to finish it already. On of the longest 300 pages in my life. It could be due to the five different languages mixed up in one book. It is kind of disturbing.

Good Read

Trope:
Historical romance, female warrior (knives, swords, bow), single father

Slow burn level: 40%, 80%

Why a 4? Strong female heroine, I enjoyed her characters strength and use of her skills. A bit showy at times, but mostly demonstrated when needed. I like the change in love there hero has for the heroine. Loved the 2 loyal doggos and the journey of there heroine teaching Bram (husband's kiddo) lessons.

This story has humor, suspense, action and a lot of heart.

The characters and story are endearing and engaging. The hero is a stubborn man whose first wife was a disappointment so he vowed to never take another wife. When he seeks an alliance with his powerful neighbor, the neighbor offers more - his help and need supplies and man power if he will marry the Claire's daughter.
