The Angel Trials by Michelle Madow is the start to the new Dark World: The Angel Trials series. However, this series is a spin off of Michelle’s Dark World: The Vampire Wish series but after having read this first book I don’t think it’s totally necessary to have read The Vampire Wish series although readers would certainly have a much deeper understanding of the world within and a glimpse at the characters that have crossed over to continue on from the end of that series.

Like the previous series The Angel Trials is a paranormal fantasy read that has included so far the focus on shifters, witches and demons but mentions vampires and nephilm that were included previously so I’m sure they will play a bigger part soon enough. There is also mentions of the ending of the previous series and Annika who was the lead character so as mentioned starting with The Vampire wish would definitely give a deeper understanding of everything.

In this first book of the new series readers meet Raven Danvers who is about to celebrate her 21st birthday. Raven’s mother claims that she is a witch and insists that Raven will gain powers soon enough but Raven is skeptical of magic. However when Raven is confronted by demons and saved by Noah, who is on a demon hunting task from Annika, Raven’s eyes are opened to a whole new world.

This installment is mainly told from Raven’s point of view but a few times in the book it does switch to other characters. I was a little surprised to not hear more from Noah but as a brooding bad boy he wasn’t one for words so it’s not shocking Raven gained the focus instead. The story is as usual and what I’ve come to expect from Michelle a completely fast and furious start to what is likely to become a very exciting series overall. With another exciting cliffhanger ending I’ll be yet again anxiously awaiting the next installment to the series.

I received an advance copy from the author, many thanks to Michelle Madow for allowing me to once again read early.

I think 2.5ish maybe. I think the book started off with a decent premise but by the end I wasn't really captivated or intrigued enough to really remain involved with the characters and the story. The world, the story, the characters were all really simple and didn't really have much depth and a couple things were blatantly obvious which takes the enjoyment out of it really. At the same time I feel like we haven't even gotten to the "main story" yet, which would be the name of the book... We haven't gotten there yet and we seem to still be quite a ways from that so maybe that is why I felt it was just meh.

Our FMC Raven starts off pretty interesting but soon fell out of my favor, as she was written into the disbelieving, useless sidekick to start off the series. I didn't start off thinking she was useless but her new partners are constantly telling her how useless she is and soon I was believing it as well. I felt like the tiny "romance" aspect we have been introduced to felt a little forced as well. I always dislike when an author makes an obvious effort to create a feeling that isn't really there by having the MC inner monologue on about an "attraction" that hasn't really been described before then, nor did it seem like the proper time. For instance... after a tramatic experience if out of the blue the FMC starts acting/feeling jealous for no apparent reason, and thinking to herself "I shouldn't be thinking about my attraction to.... " you know because shes fresh to the supernatural world and her mom has just been kidnapped by demons.. If an author has to write that obvious statement in then the relationship starts to seem a little forced right out of the gate.

I am just not sure I am involved enough nor have a connection with any of the characters enough to continue the series to find out about the actual story yet...

I want the sequel right now!!!!

City of Bones meets Twilight, but with wolf shifters instead of angels and vampires.

Michelle Madow is the queen of creating fast paced fantasy novels, with a side of romance of course.

The storyline pretty much followed that of City of bone, sticking to the major events that occurred in COB, yet tweaking some of the consequences and actions that followed. So if you get any deja vu sensation while reading this book, then that is why.

The book also contains a one or two iconic scenes from Twilight, but then again, with different turn of events.

That being said, Michelle did take those scenes and storylines, then created a whole new world with different subplots and bloodlines that made me appreciate and fall in love with the story.

The main character, Raven, is a much stronger protagonist than Bella, and more well- rounded than Clary.

I also can't wait to see how things are going to end up with Raven and Noah.

The Angel trials was a super fast and fun read. It is the perfect interlude, pick me up kind of book to read when you are in a reading slump, or after finishing a book that was full of heavy content.

I received and eARC in exchange with an honest review.

If I'm being completely honest, the only reason I picked this book up is because I was doing a word hunt challenge with a state fair theme…you know bumper cars, corn dog, ferris wheel…words like that. So, seeing the ferris wheel on the cover, I thought there was a good chance I'd be able to knock a few words off my list with this book. The fact that it contained none of the words I was looking for only annoys me more.
But even without all that crap, I still wouldn't have liked the story. Raven is immature, annoying, so back and forth it gave me whiplash, and more that a little dumb. The first page it says it's her 21st birthday and that she's grounded. What 21 year old gets grounded? So I didn't go in having super high hopes, and unfortunately they just kept falling. By chapter 7, as her free birthday drink at a restaurant, she chooses a Smirnoff Ice…really?! An hour or two tops after meeting Noah, she was on the verge of tears because he didn't want to take her along on his demon hunting trip. She's human, has absolutely zero fighting experience, and was almost kidnapped and narrowly escaped because of the guy, but you're so shocked and disappointed he doesn't want you to come? Again…really?! I wanted to slap the bitch.
I won't be going to the next one, but I will say that if I was going to read it it would be for one reason only. And that would be to see how the plan Flint, Sage's brother, (Sage who is Noah's hunting partner) worked out. That well-placed, rage-inducing, curiosity-peaking last chapter bitch of a cliffhanger. But, I'll just have to wonder…well, no, I guess I won't, because I just can't give enough of a single fuck to care what happens. Oh, well

This is a great fantasy thriller. Magic, witches, feisty females and demons, just what I like. I am seriously looking forward to the next book in the series, cannot wait. Yet another author added to my must read list. It’s getting longer and longer. If you like fantasy you’ll love this. Very highly recommended must read.

This book was fine. Good world-building. Some interesting characters. The book ended in a way that I felt wasn’t a cliffhanger but more... like finished at 80% and had more story to tell. Because really, nothing much happened to be honest. I am going to start the second in the hope that the plot moves on a bit more.

Michelle's books are always fantastic but this one is my favorite so far! I loved Noah in Vampire Wish and i'm so excited to see him with Raven. She's got so much spunk I love it. Their budding relationship is on fire and I want more! Can't wait to see what happens next!

Review:

Protagonists: Really, this section should be called Protagonist, as Raven's POV chapters take up nearly 90% of this book, I did the math, and worst of all after chapter fourteen it's only Raven's POV until the final chapter, but we'll get to that later. It isn't like I hate Raven, I don't, I like her no-nonsense, straightforward personality and she's a great character to read from, especially if you're new to The Dark World Saga, but at the same time, one of the selling points for me was getting to see more Noah who I was really intrigued by during the Vampire Wish season. We do get to see a lot of Noah, as not only does he have a few chapters in this book, but he's Raven's main love interest, but I really wish we got to see more from his POV as this is technically his series too and it would have shaken things up more after it became all Raven all the time.

Romance: Going into this story I was a bit skeptical about the romance of this series, but I was optimistic since I really want to see Noah end up happy (can you tell which character I favor?). Raven is a fantastic counterpart to Noah and I really like their dynamic together. While we don't get too much development towards a relationship between these two, the situation they're in, in regards to their feelings, is very exciting and I can't wait to see how it will progress in future installments.

World Building: So, this is totally and completely a setup book, in fact, I'll go one step farther and say that this really felt like only half of a book. Much like the second book of The Vampire Wish season, this installment felt like a whole lot of setup and zero actual pay off. I mean, it's called The Angel Trials and there aren't any actual Angels or Nephilim in this book. With this being the first book in the series, and since the author is usually very quick and turning out new installments, It's not a HUGE problem, but with how excited I was for this book I was hoping the story would develop further. I did really enjoy the additional world building in this story, most of the world building is a retread of what we learn in The Vampire Wish season, but there's a lot of new stuff about shifters that are revealed in this story that I was practically captivated by. Oh, and let's not forget a cameo appearance from one of my favorite characters, Rosella, which, I won't say how she's involved, but I nearly exploded with joy from seeing her return.

Predictability: I mean look, this book isn't that hard to figure out. While it's definitely an enjoyable adventure, or partial adventure, there isn't all much that I felt was surprising because honestly, I can only think of a couple of twists in this book at most, and they weren't all that hard to figure out. Since this book has so much set up in it, I'm sure the next installment with have a lot more twists and turns, but this book just sort of felt rather unsurprising. Scratch, that, there were two twists in this book that caught me off guard, but they were more detail based and came in the final chapter so I'll talk about that then.

Ending: Much like some of the books in The Vampire Wish season, this book ends with a new POV, who narrates the last chapter, and boy is this chapter a doozy, but I'm getting ahead of myself. Before that final chapter, we have a final climax... sort of. Honestly, the final climax of this book, while interesting, wasn't much of a final climax since it more felt like a climactic moment in the middle of a book rather than the end of one. The final chapter though, that was pretty interesting, while I figured out the gist of what was going on before this chapter, the specifics are really interesting and while it's not the same as a cliffhanger, I am left wanting more.

Rating:

When I read this book I couldn't help but draw parallels to The Vampire Prince, which I had a lot of the same problems with, but this is a promising start, and while there's really only set up in this story, at least it didn't feel like filler like The Vampire Prince nearly did.

Hooked!

Got this on KU and I am already hooked!!

Flawless editing and intriguing story. Heroine is a bit of a stubborn know it all but she’s realistic enough. My biggest con to this book is she’s a red-head, not because I dislike red heads but because there are so many red-headed protagonists!

Anyway I need to stop writing this review because I need to read the next book in the series! The ending of this one definitely took me by surprise!

3 stars, maybe more but I am okay with 3 stars for now. I can see this getting better as this book is mostly a introduction to these characters. This book is a spin off of the Dark world "The Vampire Wish" series but you don't have to read that series first to enjoy this one. This series shows potential and I hope the other books can kick it up a notch to get into a sold 3.5 or 4 star rating.

This is a SERIAL story with cliff hangers between each book. Book 1 is set up with zero resolution of anything. I prefer series where most of a story is resolved in each book.

I received a free copy of this book directly from Ms. Madow. Thank you so much Michelle! This is my review.

This novel can be read as part of the Dark World Series, or as a standalone series! The Dark World: The Vampire Wish that was recently released by Michelle, is my favourite series she has written to date.

I was beyond thrilled to learn that we would be back in this world, and with Noah. He was absolutely one of my favourite characters from the previous series. I read this novel in one sitting because I needed to know what Noah was up to since he accepted the task of killing 10 demons and how far he had gotten.

This series is a great start to Noah's mission of killing and collecting the 10 demon teeth needed to enter Avalon. As well as Raven; whom is also briefly in the main series, but again can be read as the first novel and introduction into this world.

I will say Michelle always gets me with the twists and turns. I always think I know what is going to happen or where the characters are being lead. And I am always pleasantly surprised. I am highly addicted to this world and these characters.

I already can't wait till the next installment. Michelle has such an amazing writing style, there is always so much action AND love components and relationships that are genuine and real ( they are very believable).

I can't wait to see what shenanigans these characters get into, as well as see previous characters from the Dark World: The Vampire Wish Series.

If you are into magic, mystery, supernatural creatures and engaging characters; this series is definitely for you! A Must Read!

I received an ARC from the author and this doesn't in any way influence my thoughts on it.
description
I ABSOLUTELY loved this book. While there was no doubt since it's Michelle Madow (who's totally amazing), I was still blown away nonetheless.
It takes place in the world of The Vampire Wish series with characters fans of that series will recognise.
It follows Noah, a lone wolf who's hunting Demons as a form of redemption and Raven the mysterious girl who is seemingly human but has undeniable ties to the supernatural.
The Angel Trials begins on Raven's 21st birthday, She's the daughter of a LA psychic who alleges that they're descendants of rare witches.
Despite warnings of gloom and doom from her mother and spotty memories of a trip to Europe a few weeks back, Raven decides to celebrate her birthday out with friends.
During their night out in town, they come across Noah with Sage a werewolf from a pack who's helping him track down demons to kill them.
Things are fine until a couple of demons capture Raven who doesn't really believe in the supernatural, Noah and Sage interfere leading one of the demons who's a greater one to escape. Shocked by what she saw, Raven freaks out and runs away from the heroic pair.
Trying to get away from all she's seen, she heads home and is dismayed to see that it looks like her mother has been abducted for unknown reasons.
Noah and Sage who had been tracking the escapee demon came yo her house and were surprised to find her.
This leads to an awakening for Raven as she's thrust into the supernatural world. But no matter how confusing things get, getting her mother back from the demon is her priority.
Revelations are made and alliances are formed.
Raven, Noah and Sage embark on a perilous journey that may very well end up shifting the axis of the supernatural world once more.
I love the new characters introduced in this book as they add to an already marvelous roster of supernatural characters. The new storyline is also very engaging and I can't wait to see how it all works out. Michelle Madow's trademark fast pace of writing is as top notch as usual as it helps to easier absorb the book.
The ending was jaw dropping as there's a development that'll keep you itching for the next book.
I happily recommend The Angel Trials to fans of the series and newcomers, Y'all will love this book.
I can't wait to see what's next.

Another great start to a new series.

This is one of those hard to put down or go to sleep till you finished books. The only problem is it leaves you with a sense of loss and need, so much so you download the next book or in my case I did. I was literally hooked from page one.

I'm not only loving the characters but their names also ... Sage & Raven, love them.
Good description of each of the scenes, great character development and well just brilliant writing by Michelle Madow.

Off to start book two...

Amazing first book to the series!! I've always been a fan of Michelle Madow's work, and this one's no exception. This books comes after the Vampire Wish series, so you definitely need to read that first to fully understand what's going on. The book moves quickly so there's no slow introduction like some books. Overall, a page turner with lots of action and some romance. Loved it! I'll be reading the next book now.

Take a chance and you’ll enjoy it!

I have never read this author before but it seemed like a good book and so I took a chance. It was well worth it because this one started full of adventure and never stopped. You get a few POV’s and I like that, so we aren’t always guessing about other people. I like the world building and the story was well written.

“Something’s coming Raven. Darkness looms on the horizon.

Following a European backpacking trip which she took without her mother’s consent and which she strangely has no memory of, Raven Danvers has been grounded. In spite of this, her mother surprises her by arranging for her friends to take her out for her 21st birthday. Raven is unnerved by an earlier tarot reading and her mother’s revelation that magic runs in their blood and they are descendants of rare witches. Her mother gifts her her own lapis lazuli necklace which she claims will help her tune into her abilities.

While partying with her friends, Raven senses bad vibes from a man who buys them a drink. The man, who is in fact a demon, attacks her and attempts to kidnap her along with an accomplice. Fortunately she’s rescued by two wolf shifters, Noah and Sage who were hunting the demon. They kill the first demon but his accomplice, a greater demon no less, escapes by teleporting and uses the necklace to locate Raven’s mother before abducting her.

Reeling from her discovery of the supernatural world as well as the news that her mother is missing, Raven finds herself out of her depth but quickly realises that she must rely on Noah and Sage if she wants to see her mother again. Seeking advice from Rosella, a fortune teller, she learns that her mother has been taken by the demon Azazel and in order to rescue her, she must accompany Noah to the island of Avalon and undergo the Angel Trials. Only as a Nephilim can she hope to defeat him and prevent demons from enslaving mankind.

The Angel Trials is the first instalment of the Dark World: The Angel Trials series and was my first introduction to the author. While this is a spin off of the Dark World: The Vampire Wish Series and features some recurring characters, it’s not necessary to have read the prequel series. The Angel Trials is told mainly from Raven’s point of view but does occasionally feature Noah, Amber and lastly Flint which is a game changer.

The book mostly introduces the characters and sets up the world building. We learn that hundreds of demons have been released from hell and are now roaming the earth. Their goal is to kill all supernaturals and take humans as slaves. Mankind’s only hope is Annika, a Nephilim born on Earth, who was turned into a full angel and therefore has the ability to walk the Earth. She resides on the mystical island of Avalon. With the Nephilim all but wiped out, Annika is recruiting candidates to join her army to stop the demons. Why are the demons hunting Raven? Why are her memories of her backpacking trip hazy? What are Noah’s motives for wanting to reach Avalon?

This was an encouraging start to a promising series and is ideal for fans of urban fantasy, shifters, vampires, witches, angels and demons.

I received an advanced free audible copy of The Angel Trials which was narrated by Patricia Santomasso whose clear, concise delivery made it easy to differentiate between characters.

If you are like me and read a ton of werewolf stories on wattpad, then welcome to the book of nostalgia for you!

Did this book bring anything new to the table, not really. Did I finish it so fast and love every second of it, of course! Definitely a guilty pleasure of mine!

Some positives:
-Noah is exactly the kind of man that I absolutely lust over and want in my life (wattpad has made me the woman I am)
-Sage is badass and I love her and want to be her
-I love the supernatural element in it makes it easier to read in my opinion
-Raven is 21!! Such a positive for me because I’m currently 19 and yeah a lot to explain but I love it

Some negatives:
-There’s still so much to learn and you don’t necessarily get a lot of information
-I kind of hate Raven? She’s like “oooo I’m so smart but she doesn’t seem like it since she hasn’t done anything to prove herself. I also love badass women as main characters because they are just better, and I think Raven is not that. (At least currently I’m expecting a lot of character growth!)

I’m going to give this a solid 3/5 stars because it was super comforting and enjoyable, but nothing life changing!

Noah is so close to achieving his goal so that he can go to Avalon, but now he has a new charge. He doesn't know her connections to his world, but to be fair either does she. She begins to remember bits and pieces as they begin to work together for the common goal of reaching Avalon. Will the make it in time? Will they be able to help save the world?

Surprisingly, I quite like this first book sequel to the Vampire Wish. I guess it's because there aren't many POVs or stories from different characters alternating between them, making the storytelling run smoothly.

Those who haven't read the Vampire Wish must be wondering about Noah's background story or Raven's nightmare, the flashback, and what happened during the solo backpacking in Europe. As I have already read the series, it's no longer a mystery for me.

However, there's still the fact that I do not know about Raven, and I look forward to reading the next book and finding out why the greater demon, Azazel kidnapped Raven's mum and also getting to know Sage, a new character in the Dark World.
