Vicky Dreiling is a confirmed historical romance junkie and Anglophile. Frequent business trips to the UK allowed her to indulge her passion for all things Regency England. Bath, Stonehenge, and Spencer House are among her favorite places. She is, however, truly sorry for accidentally setting off a security alarm in Windsor Castle. That unfortunate incident led her British colleagues to nickname her “Trouble.

***original review posted at ***

*ahem* Kati has done another limerick that might make you cringe because it's as awful as Charles Osgood's poetry (see: How To Seduce A Scoundrel)

There once was a rake named Will
Who rang up a large gambling bill
An heiress he must claim
To pay for his game
But in the end their secrets they must spill

Kati: Ah! So we finally get Will and Amy’s story. Totally NOT disappointed. But then again, Aunt Hester stole the show along with grandmamma and her shouting of “Are you Scottish, dear? because of Amy’s red hair. Ha! I feel like I want to do this review in quotes because there were just some memorable lines. What do you think?

Jamie: After reading How to Seduce a Scoundrel we all knew that I loved Will and his bad boy attitude. And Amy... shy Amy. I’ve loved her since How to Marry a Duke. The thought of these two getting together had me desperate for their story. I loved it. I was not disappointed at all. Devil Darcett certainly lived up to his name. But I was very happy to see Amy coming out into her own.

Kati: Amy certainly has it in her mind that this is THE season for her. I guess I would too if some creepy vicar from my hometown thinks we belong together. Poor Amy, even after telling Mr. Crawford that he shouldn't wait for her, the man takes it upon himself to still insert himself in her life via letter. Doesn't he know that 'no' means 'no'? I'm glad she and the Devil got together. They play off each other so well. Amy, the emerging wallflower and the Will, the lovable rake with wanderlust.

Jamie: Oh that lovable rake. I have to say for someone nicknamed the Devil, Will is a good guy. He’s a man. He stepped up when he needed to and that is probably why I love him. Okay, so he may have been a bit of trouble but he took care of Amy when he needed to... like in the wine cellar. And he did agree to court her when he didn’t have to. But we don’t call him Devil for nothing. He is a clever rake.

Kati: Yes, the wine cellar. I really did enjoy the fact that he was willing to do the whole relationship thing backwards. Getting married and then courting Amy. It was sweet but between Amy’s secret of sketching dress designs and getting paid for it and Will’s initial need to pay a gambling debt by marrying an heiress (thanks to the suggestion of his too-far-in-their-cups friends...although I can forgive Bell because he caught my attention with his mysteriousness), they both sort of dance around each other. But when the ravishing starts...that is all I have to say.

Jamie: Oh the ravishing! Will is very good in that area and I have to say that little shy Amy isn’t that shy in the bedroom. She’s a bit of a vixen underneath. And she has a backbone. I love when she defended Will to his family. I am not a fan of the way his family treats him. Oh, and Bell... well he certainly has an air of mystery around him. And I do like a bit of mystery around a man.

I also love the set of secondary characters. We get a bit of Hawk and Julianne and get a chance to see how things are with them. But the scene stealer's are Aunt Hester and Grandmamma.

Kati: Aunt Hester with her ugly purple turban and Grandmamma with her fascination of all things Scottish by screaming at Amy every chance she gets. *shakes head* I’m still intrigued by them. After all, Hester has gone through 5 men. What the heck happened to all of them?

I did like the fact that we got to revisit Hawk and Julianne and Tristan and Tessa for a bit. Oh, and poor Georgette whose mother is experiencing hot flashes and she doesn’t know it, takes it out on her daughter. I’m glad Georgette and Beau (one of Julianne’s ex-suitors) got together. Vicky did a great job finishing up her story as well.

Jamie: Yes. I’m happy that Georgette and Beau found love with each other. I have a bit of a crush on Beau. But back to Will and Amy. They had a lot to overcome and we all know secrets always come out. My only complaint is that I thought the ending was a bit rushed.

Kati: I will have to agree with you on that one. However, I did like the rest of the book. In true Vicky Dreiling fashion, she kept me captivated and laughing until the last sentence. My side hurt so badly and I was snorting like crazy on a plane that the person next to me probably wished they were sitting elsewhere.

Jamie's Favorite Quote:

Will touched his forehead to hers and rubbed her back. Of course, he was aroused, but their breath frosted in the air, and she was a virgin. He pressed her head against his shoulder again and nuzzled her hair.
She placed her slender hand over his chest. "Your heart is beating so fast."
He tightened his hold on her, a little undone by her innocence.

Kati's Favorite Quote:

Grandmamma tugged on his arm. “What did he say? she shouted.
He raised his voice. “I need an occupation.
Grandmamma clasped her hands and bellowed, “The church would be perfect.
Hester scowled at her sister. “Maribelle, the parishioners would revolt. The papers have named him the devil.
“That isn’t very nice, Grandmamma hollered. “You go first.
“Go where? Hester called out.
“To the devil, Grandmamma shouted.

OVERALL:
We waited a really long time for How To Ravish A Rake. Like FOREVER! But it was so worth the wait. Between Amy’s growth in her confidence and Will realizing that there could be more to not having so much wanderlust, comes an enchanting story full of love, laughter, secrets, heartbreak and two very memorable funny ladies. Fans of Dreiling will definitely not be disappointed since this book has her signature hilarious antics, witty quips, heart tugging “you belong with me but I don’t know how to tell you moments and ravishment involving some a finger painting scene with liquor that you’ll never forget. It’s been burned into our brains.

If you haven’t been reading Vicky Dreiling then you have been living under a rock. Oh... and did we mention that her first two books are up for RITA®’s? They are! She is a triple nominee. So we suggest you go and get How To Marry A Duke, How To Seduce A Scoundrel and How To Ravish A Rake and get to reading. This is a great ending to the reader dubbed ‘How To trilogy and we can’t wait to see what she has next in store for us. So step on it Vicky!

Fun read with an adorable couple and scrumptious hero! But this was in serious need of an epilogue or something more. The ending was so abrupt and stilted, it almost came off like an editing mistake. Like...where is the rest? You can't do that to your readers and the characters. The dialogue just abruptly stops and falls off the page. The couple's reconciliation deserved more than one brief conversation on the very last page. Come on! Felt very very rushed and incomplete.

It was ok.

That's about it.

Will is a rakehell - not a great one let's be honest - and he gets himself in a spot of trouble and owes a lot of money. He's too proud to ask his brother so he needs an heiress. Enter Amy, who he's kind-of-sort-of frenemy with, but also intrigued by. Amy is shy, has a penchant for drawing, dreams of romance, hates Will for being too rakish and handsome, and has red hair. Will almost decides to comprimise her to get her dowry, but then backs out but then they still get married through other reasons.

And then it's just their forced marraige becoming a real one. Post 35% the focus is all on them which is good, because there were too many characters earlier that had me confused. The dialogues are decent, the steam ok, and I appreciate the honesty they shared - but I just never once felt any real connection to them.

So hence I guess a pretty decent read. It's getting 3 stars and not 2 purely because there were no theatrics and drama once the angst plot point (that I saw coming a mile away) eventually arrived. I love authors that steer away from melodrama.

Amy Hardwick is too shy to function and when William "The Devil" Darcett sets his steamy sights on her, she's SHOCKED TO HER CORE, Lady Boner style. They end up married, burdened with secrets, and hot for one another sexually.

1. Listen.

2. I did not like this. The tone of the thing is weirdly...off, with overly exaggerated leaps of emotion and goals and characterization. Everyone feels like a soap star with melodramatic assumptions about how to interact with other alleged humans.

3. The actual conversations between Amy and Will weren't terrible, but the narrative around them and the reasons they did things or believed things was—bad.

4. The friendships were bad.

5. The romance was bad.

6. The secrets were bad.

7. I did not like it.

This book was just ok, borderline Meh. I only made it thru to a little passed midway, but the whole time I kept thinking that I had already read this story before (even though I had not). I think my overall problem is that I never really liked or started to care about the main characters. The book starts off with the hero making some pretty dumb decisions, then acts like a complete dork with the heroine, then suddenly he is acting all nice and normal (nothing rakish about him). So I felt there was nothing for him to work on and the book was only half-way done. The heroine... I normally love wallflowers but she was kind of bitchy and annoying. I didn't see any good or endearing qualities about her at all. :( On to the next book...

Enjoyed it. The plot is not very original (on-the-shelf/wallflower h has a love-hate feeling for the H who is a real rake-ruthless man....re): he needs money and is tempted to compromise the wallflower heiress to get it, actually the scandal happens and they are forced to marry but beyond H's control.
She accepts but asks him to wait to reclaim his "husband's rights"... a game of seduction starts that becomes a path to real feelings. He grows up and heals his emotional scars - Love conquers all in romance novels (at least in this novel....)

No gracias.

Amy Hardwick knows all too well the reputation of William Darcett, also not quite so affectionately called "The Devil", and she's steering clear away from the handsome rake. She's on her last Season and decides to make this one to deviate from the earlier Wallflower years. And she succeeds becoming the fashion darling of the ton with her beautifully designed gowns.

Will is cut off from his heritage and cannot no longer travel abroad away from his meddling family. To cook up a scheme to get out of the mess he's gotten himself into he and his scoundrel friends think seducing Ms. Hardwick an heiress to 50 000£ upon marriage might just do the trick. But who knew he might have actually have few decent bones in him after all.

Seduction, schemes, courting and betrayal make this novel a must read!

I have found my new favorite Historical Romance author! Vicki Dreiling writes a fun, lively set of characters in an era that could leave a modern girl cold, Amy and Will battle their wits and wills against each other in a game of seduction, betrayal and love in 1818, and it's addictively readable! I have to say I'm picking up the two in the series before this!

Even though How to Ravish A Rake was the third in the series that I haven't previously read, it was a brilliant stand alone, even the previous characters weren't too serial, they felt like genuine supportive cast - but I imagine the people who have read the novel one and two it's wonderful to see them again... because I do wait to see Amy and Will in the next novel!

The plot was excellent, it was filled with little subplots and with lots of witty lines and dialogue, charming manners and seduction. For a Historical Romance this was very fast pace and active, and I liked it a lot, not too many chats over tea for me, I need the action! And How To Ravish A Rake had it!

Both Amy and Will were lovable, even though thoroughly handsome Will was questionable there for a while, he seriously was a rake and had very little care for anyone else's feelings, but then doing the right thing suddenly changed him in my eyes and even though he didn't reform then and there he become lovable instead of just interesting. And Amy, I was so rooting for her and her little business with the dress maker!

I wish I could tell you about all the things I loved, but that would giveaway too much and I want you to live this through with Amy and Will, but there are tons and you won't be disappointed! The seduction, schemes, courting and betrayal make this novel a must read for all Historical romance lovers!

3.5 flames

Witty banter and a fun cast of characters lead this romantic comedy.

It’s a light and fun story. I really enjoyed Amy and her designs. Amy is a wallflower, she tends to be docile and sweet, kind and her shy exterior hides a brilliant mind for design. After feeling that none of the fashionable gowns ever made her look fashionable, Amy decides to figure out why. Studying fashion plates, and working with a modiste, Amy realizes she has quite the eye for fashion. She also realizes that not every girl will look fabulous in the same gown. So Amy begins to design her own.

This is Amy’s last Season, and she vows that while she may not be the most beautiful woman at the ball, she will be the most beautifully dressed woman there. And she is. Elegant, well-dressed, and still as tongue-tied as ever. Only one man seems to frustrate her so much, she is able to get around her shyness. Will Darcett.

Will wants nothing more than to leave his meddlesome family and go back to the Continent. His family, however, has called a family meeting and told him that he can’t go. They pressure Hawk (his elder brother) to cut off his funds. Will decides to win his freedom by winning at cards. Unfortunately for all his winning, he ends up in debt for 20,000 pounds! He knows Amy has a fortune, and if he compromises her, he can pay off his debt. Luckily, Will has a conscience, and after a botched shot at getting Amy alone, he feels that it is beneath him to marry her for money.

But they are found locked in a wine cellar (overnight) and they wind up marrying anyway. I feel like the first 100 pages were more about Amy and Will separately, than about Amy and Will together. It was a very slow romance, but a very fast marriage. This is where Amy tells Will she needs more than just lust, she needs to get to know him. They make a wager, and give each other 3 weeks to court, unless Will can seduce her first. I enjoyed the fun antics, the witty banter -I love Vicky Dreiling’s sense of humor, and how it shows in her writing.

This was a fun and light-hearted romance. I enjoyed it, although I felt that for a cast of characters who seems to be able to sit down and have very rational conversations, the two big giant secrets could have been talked about in one of the many family meetings and been done and over with.

I think my fav of the series so far

Completely loved How to Ravish a Rake!

I got so wrapped up in How to Ravish a Rake that I read it in a day, non-stop. The hero, Will was delicious and Amy was just delightful. I loved the romance formula that author, Vicky Dreiling concocted in this ravishing story. She choose a novel approach instead of writing the usual overused conflict where the protagonists try to avoid their mutual feelings towards one another. It was a breath of fresh air to read that the couple recognized that they had to be together and instead the wedge was a secret that could potentially destroy each other's tender trust. Toss in that situation with their newly coerced marital status and it made for a thrilling page turning experience.
Oh how I loved it.

I had lots of smiles while reading How to Ravish a Rake. Will's family provided the majority of the grins but Will did a great job himself. He is not such a serious character and did a terrific job of handling some tough situations. Will received some wonderful advice from his older brother, Hawk and I highlighted a few of them because they were was so sage.

"I've made bad mistakes, as you know, but what counts is how you deal with it afterward."

"The circumstances of your marriage aren't important. It's what comes after the wedding that matter."

Those are definitely quotable statements that can be used no matter what time period you are in.

Will really takes that advice to heart and makes the most out of his situation with Amy. Just as Amy does. I felt bad for the pair being forced into a marriage after their innocent and accidental overnight encounter. It was a joy to read about Amy blooming from that shy wallflower to a desirable confident woman. I also loved that her change came from within herself and not credited to a man.

For a couple that would not have been considered good match, there was a lot of romance throughout their story.

How to Ravish a Rake also treated the readers to an awesome secondary story between Georgette and Beau. Their story was different but no less interesting. What a bonus.

Teasers: Wine cellar, marriage courtship, sexy poetry reading while he held her, picnic

I really liked this book all the way through, then I didn't like the ending at all!!! I liked Amy and enjoyed most of the romance. I loved Will and really enjoyed seeing his character develop and mature. The ending just really bothered me and didn't feel like it fit with the rest of the book. It just felt very forced and abrupt. Even though Amy was growing out of her shy personality, I don't see her reacting well with a scene in front of a huge group of Will's family and friends. And again, even though Will realized he needed his family, I don't see him spilling it all in front of the most meddling members of his family. The ending just really spoiled my enjoyment of the book and didn't feel like it belonged.

DNF at 43%

Another book I “lost on my Kindle since 2012. I think it's ok if in Feb 2025 - I finally call it. I am 43% into the book and there has been no romance. The couple have been forced to marry after a tepid kiss and they hardly know each other. There is no spark between the two and I am bored. This is the 3rd time I've tried with the book it seems so I think I've given it a fair shot.

This may improve but since it hasn't hooked me in over 160 pages I think I will pass and move on to the other hundred or so books lost on my Kindle. Let's see what other gems I can find.

This could have been a great romance and it could have been a disaster .... As it is, it was neither, which is a shame because all in all I quite liked the story and the characters but it took me nearly half the book to start liking them
The main reason for the 3 stars is the writing, which was for big parts really good and then, often with one wrong sentence all the build-up came crashing down and it left me feeling bereft of the emotional buil-up

Nevertheless, it is a nice story

This is the third book in Vicky Dreiling's inaugural How To series featuring Hawk's brother Will and Amy (from the first 2 books). I did receive my copy as an ARC from the author.

Amy happens to be my favorite of Ms. Dreiling's three heroines so far. She is an introverted thinker who must deal with a lot of social anxiety. This leaves her tongue tied in social situations and confused in larger crowds, which explains the idea that she is aloof, first mentioned in Duke. Amy is the type of heroine that many women can relate to. While insecure, she is strong enough to face it and begin to overcome it. She does so by using her natural talent as a way to move past her anxiety and relate to people, especially the ladies of the ton.

William, Hawk's younger brother, has been living his life on the run from his family. He keeps his exploits public and is as charming as possible as a way of garnering attention, especially from his family. Will is like many overlooked children where any attention, even for bad behavior, is welcome. But he is conflicted because he fears his family's intervention and disapproval due to his anger at them. Instead of confronting his family with his feelings, he prefers to stay away. This becomes impossible when Hawk cuts off his allowance and Will makes a major mistake in trying to garner funds. Despite his family issues, he is loyal, steadfast, and honorable.

Will and Amy's story is endearing and refreshing. They are very different people who handle difficult feelings in the same way, withdrawal. Ms. Dreiling caught perfectly the swirl of emotions that anxiety can cause in a person and how it can easily rip apart the fragile self-esteem. Unlike other stories where both the heroine and hero have to go through extreme emotional upheaval to grow, Will and Amy gradually work their way through their problems. Despite them not knowing each other well, they quickly learn to rely on each other for strength and the importance of fully believing in each other.

It was an absolute thrill to finally read a book where when the twist comes, the hero and heroine act like rational mature adults instead of following the first emotional impulse that flits through their brain. Of course given both Amy and Will's tendency to withdraw from adversity, it underscores their development and why they are so perfect for each other. As in her other two books, the hero and heroine compliment each others strengths and weaknesses and bring out the best in each other. The rapport between Amy and Will is light, witty and bewitching. Watching Will fall in love with Amy was utterly delightful and easily made this my favorite book of the series.

Rake meets wallflower. Rake teases wallflower with no intention of getting involved. Shit happens. Rake has to seduce said wallflower. Rake ends up falling in love.

This type of story should get old but when is narrated with humor and with characters that you seem to connect to and care from the beginning, then it's no wonder this book was a delightful read. I just couldn't put it down.

We got to know Amy Hardwick as Julienne's friend in How to Seduce a Scoundrel, and she's been shy and the typical wallflower. She doesn't usually get asked to dance or attract any male attention. After returning home and getting a proposal from the Vicar, Mr. Crawford, she realizes she still has hopes to marry for love, and she wants to have one last season.

Enter Will "the Devil" Darcett, Hawks brother and Juliennes brother-in-law. We don't see too much of his ways in this book. It is said that he is a rake, but in all honesty he didn't give so much that impression. He gets into a gambling debt and his friends suggest that he seduce and marry Amy for her fortune so he can pay off his debt.

Even though he starts off with that plan he quickly repents and decides to give it up, but ends up in a compromising position anyway, and married to her. Amy, wanting to marry for love, wants to try to make things work and withholds sex as a way of getting a proper courtship and hopefully cementing a better relationship. And the plan actually works. Most of the book is really spent on their at home courtship.
I do see them as a believable couple and I enjoyed their times together, getting to know each other physically and emotionally. I think they are well suited for each other. Will can bring Amy out of her shell more and Amy can ground Will and support him.

I loved the part about Amy designing clothes, not only hers but for most women of the ton, once they caught on to her wonderful designs. It really made her stand out from other wallflower characters and made her more interesting.

However, I do have a complaint, and that’s the ending. It was so abrupt. While in the middle of what I thought would be somewhat of an emotional ending, it only took about one page to wrap things up and finish the book. I think a few more pages, or even an epilogue to that would’ve been a bit more satisfying.

It was still a very fun, light and fast read. I am very curious to read the next book about Will’s friend Bell.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Known as a wallflower, heiress Amy Hardwick goes to London for one last season to try to change that and makes every effort to return eye contact, dance and do a bit more than wait in the wings and gossip. She has also decided to turn her hobby of designing dresses into a bit more. Although women are frowned upon for engaging in trade during the 1800's, she secretly cuts a deal with a dress maker and sees her creations cause a bit of a stir. The dresses she wears does more for her visibility than anything she has tried before. Will Darcett also notices her and although Amy will have nothing to do with this notorious "devil", she does find herself intrigued by him. So when the two are accidentally locked in the wine cellar during a party, she finds her reputation is ruined and the two must marry. Which it seems works perfectly with Will's plans to marry an heiress to pay off his gambling debts. This is where the story really gets interesting!

As an only child, Amy has had more freedom than most women in society during this time period but it also seems that she has a hard time coming to grips with how society limits her actions. She has the backbone to make Will behave and actually court her, through a fun wager of her own, that the story becomes a totally swoon worthy read! There are also many characters like Will's Aunt Hester, who add zest and plain spoken truth. She loves to put the family in their place. Will's sisters, Harmony, Patience and Hope are chatty and a bit overbearing but still loving towards their brother. This story is the third in a series, but you don't need to read the other two and it easily stands alone. It is wonderful how the Happy Ever After comes full circle for these two, who at first seem unsuited towards each other. You will find yourself googling the fashions described in the book during this time period since the descriptions are just scrumptious!

Overall, I adored how Dreiling worked in the mores of the 1800's and gave it a bit of a modern twist making the characters of Will and Amy actually make the best of a bad situation. Amy, although she is described as not that attractive, learns that with the right clothes, she can highlight her good points. I know Will is described as a rake and not caring about anything except his own pleasure, discovers a responsibility towards Amy and decides he does have a conscious after all. So far this is my favorite book in the series. Now, I haven't read about the next book in the series but I hope it isn't too far off since Dreiling has become one of my favorite historical romance authors!

I'm sad to say that I did not enjoy this book as much as I was hoping to. The last book left me on such a high but with this book it just kinda dragged on for me during the beginning. I'm not sure if it was because of the conflict between Amy and Will or maybe because I was expecting more banter between them. I just felt like something was missing.

For the last few seasons Amy has spent her time on Wallflower row and is determined to make herself over this season and find herself a love match. If she doesn't succeed she will be forced to return home to the local vicar and a loveless marriage. What she didn't plan on was the attention of Will "The Devil" Darcett. When they are both caught in a compromising situation, Will knows he must offer to marry Amy so that she is able to salvage her reputation even though the last thing he wanted was to be married. Neither are expecting much from the marriage, especially passion and love.

I enjoyed Will and Amy's relationship and I loved watching it grow to love. Neither wanted to be with the other at first, but I liked that they quickly started to see the good in one another. There was definite passion and I thoroughly enjoyed watching Will "court" Amy.

I felt Will was so different than we are lead to believe. He has this "Devil" persona and is regaled as one of the biggest rake's in ton and also has no feelings but I didn't really see that side of him. Yes, he's carefree and doesn't really want to grow up, but I found him to be a genuinely nice and intelligent man who has a lot of family issues he is trying to work through.

As for Amy, I think we saw a completely different character than what we were shown in previous books. In this book she has no problem speaking her mind and is quick to stick up for her husband when need be. She has also become the ton fashion adviser. It just didn't seem right to me. What happened to the shy outcast?

Though I'm gripping, I really did enjoy the story and the relationship between Amy and Will. I found the progression of their relationship to feel real and I enjoyed watching it unfold. I also love that we were able to see more of Hester. She is definitely one of my favorite characters. I also found myself really drawn to the character of Bell and I really hope that the author gives him his own book. He literally broke my heart and he is in definite need of a HEA.

After a string of unsuccessful seasons, Amy is beginning to give up hope on the love match she has dreamed of. She's always been too shy to attract a man at any of the London balls, but this year, she is determined to make a change. Armed with the beautiful dresses she designed, she finally finds herself apart from the other wallflowers and enjoying her first taste of acclaim.

Will is the youngest son in his family. He has played his hand to the fullest, gallivanting around the world and flitting from woman to woman. But now, his older brother is forcing him to settle down, withholding his allowance and making him take a job. Will hopes to win the money for more travels at a gaming hell, but ends up in debt instead. He either has to go back to his brother for help or find a wealthy bride to help him pay off his debt.

He thinks, at first, to find his fortune with Amy. She proves too savvy to be compromised, however. and in the end he realizes what a mistake that would have been. As luck would have it, the two actually do end up compromised, though completely by accident. So they end up married anyway.

Amy is devastated that her dreams of true love have been dashed, but she vows to make the best of her marriage. Will agrees to set aside his rakish ways to court her while slowing introducing her to the pleasures of a physical relationship. And it starts to work. Unfortunately, they are both keeping secrets from one another... secrets that are like timebombs waiting to go off and blow their new relationship to bits.

The thing is, neither of their secrets would have really been a big deal if they actually communicated with one another. These two are just so gun-shy and unable to really trust each other that it almost like they were each waiting for something to screw it up. It was frustrating because the only true threat to their happiness was their own trepidation.

I did like watching these two fall in love, despite their personal foibles. Will actually mends his rakish ways rather quickly and is a very good husband throughout. I enjoyed his wooing of Amy and I found myself as charmed by him as she was. There were sexy times and some comic relief too, which made the story even better.

The book is peppered with familiar characters from the previous two books in the series, but this works well as a standalone. I liked it. But I must acknowledge that the ending felt a bit abrupt and I would have liked a few more pages to take me into their HEA. 3 1/2 stars.

"How To Ravish A Rake" is book three in Dreiling's "How To" Series. You will encounter characters you may have seen in previous books. I couldn't wait for this installment thanks in part to shy, wallflower Amy. For some reason, that part of her I connected to and had me waiting to see her story. My waiting paid off as it was not a disappointment. Amy has decided on her last Season that she was going out with a bang. Amy uses her talent for designs and fabric to help her break out from the shy, aloof, wallflower image. Though there was a vulnerability that came from the change, she had the guts to want to turn it around before giving in and settling for a suitor just for security as opposed to love.

Will "the devil" Darcett has been running from his family for awhile. Family meetings, balls, and working in general is just not his thing. He would much rather be traveling with his friends. He then got the news that his funds will be held. In a last ditch effort to continue his travel, he gets himself in a pickle. His friends devise a plan to marry a heiress to solve all his problems.

Will and Amy get caught in a compromising position, even if it may have been innocent and Will steps up to be the gentleman hiding under that rake facade, saving Amy's reputation. Amy is the one girl who doesn't fall for Will's charm and Will has always liked a challenge. The marriage and courtship that follow had me swooning one minute to not wanting it to end in the next. It was a heartmelting and breathtaking story. Watching as events unfolded and seeing Will fall for Amy, was delightful. The passion between the two was exceptionally hot. The bantor was also witty and refreshing enjoyable. I have to take a minute from Amy and Will to give Aunt Hester the credit she needs. I loved that woman! She had me dying with laughter. Let's not forget Grandmama either, with the Scottish and kilts. Oh my you naughty woman! I would definitely recommend this book. I loved every page I read and did not want it to end. Historical romance isn't as much my thing a paranormal romance, Dreiling has definitely converted me! I love this series . I look forward to see what Vicky Dreiling will be coming out with next. I know at least one or two more characters that I want to see a story on in the future

This book reminded me why historical romance was my first favorite genre as a young reader. I was immersed in the era immediately, from the dialogue to the detail when describing carriage rides, balls, and the popular fashions during the time. Not to mention my absolute awe at the strength these women had to have to find any kind of happiness on their terms. It was fascinating to me that one wrong word or gesture could have greater meaning than intended.

Amy Hardwick has one last season in London to shake off her wallflower image in hopes of finding a love match. If she doesn’t succeed she has resigned herself to returning to her home in the country to a suitor who will provide security but no love. William Darcett, also known as “the devil due to his wickedly rakish ways, is caught in a compromising situation with Amy and he offers to marry her to save her reputation. But is Amy willing to risk her heart and future happiness with an unrepentant rake?

Amy is shy and gets tongue tied whenever she meets people for the first time but she’s determined to break her wallflower reputation for her final season and she gains confidence and attention from designing and wearing fashions she’s created. Wil is not looking to settle down, he’s happiest traveling and avoiding any kind of commitment. He prefers his pleasure without attachments. He’s honorable at the core and willing to marry Amy to save her reputation but doesn’t see the marriage changing his ways until Amy surprises him with a challenge that he can’t refuse.

This book is a fast paced romance that left me sighing happily and wishing for more. I found myself laughing out loud several times. The humor was nicely balanced with heartwarming romance between these characters. The supporting characters were enchanting and passionate in their own ways and added rich depth to the story; my favorite was Wil’s near deaf, outrageously funny Grandmother. The physical attraction between Amy and Wil was strong from the beginning and super-hot throughout the book. There was one particular “painting scene that was incredibly sexy and unforgettable.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a heartwarming romance with a touch of humor and fun.

This is the 3rd book in Vicky’s How To series and was my first book of hers that I have read. I enjoyed this book so much that as soon as I was finished I downloaded and also devoured the first two books, How to Marry a Duke and How to Seduce a Scoundrel.

Amy Hardwick is very shy, her last season and she is determined to get over her shyness and overcome her status as a wallflower. She struggles with great anxiety to approach groups and gets tongue tied when everyone is speaking at once. I liked how Amy may be quiet and shy, but she is very observant and can see right through Will’s charms.

Will “Devil Darcett enjoys his reputation as a rake. He has a maddening family who are trying to get him to settle down instead of always leaving and traveling. Everything seems to come easy for Will. He’s the youngest child of his family and has often been over looked so he was able to do whatever he wants. Until his family tries to settle him, he tries to fight against it and makes some poor choices and finds himself in a predicament. At first I thought Will’s friends seem to be bad influences and push him to follow through with their plan even when Will argues against their ideas. I will say that I developed a better esteem of his friends as the book goes one.

One fateful night determines their lives as they find themselves in a compromising situation, they must marry. Amy is nervous about being intimate with someone she barely knows so they make a courting wager. But as she falls more and more for his charms, she worries about him not being able to quit his rakish ways and breaking her heart if she allows herself to fall in love with him. The both make mistakes, but I’m glad that they don’t give up on each other.

Will and Amy made a great match and loved how their relationship evolved. I loved them individually as well together Will is very charming and I loved his humor and I fell in love with him. There were several times that Will made me go, awwwwww. I loved their inside jokes! Laurence *snickers* (You’ll have to read to know what I’m talking about). I loved Will’s family, they are crazy and supportive and overwhelming and I just couldn’t stop smiling/laughing when they were present them.

As many of you know, historical romances are one of my all-time favorite romances, so I knew I was going to like this one. I mean, look at the cover! So, as you can probably guess, I really enjoyed How to Ravish a Rake!

No matter what historical romance I read, I always love the main character. Amy is just an awesome heroine and I loved her whole story. She was used to being the "wallflower" at the balls, but this season she has come out of her shell and is determined to change. The fact that she designs such gorgeous dresses is a really cool added aspect onto her character, making me like her even more (especially since I'm in love with the dress she's wearing on the cover!). And her friends are a really great part of the story. The main characters often don't have best friends, so Georgette was a great character to get to know and hear about her own romance troubles. Amy's relationship with Will (aka the Devil) is what made me really like this book.

They're relationship in the beginning is all about Will taunting Amy, calling her "Red" and just being his normal devilish self. But when he really starts to care about her is when I really start to fall for him. They're just so cute together and I couldn't get enough of them!

I love the whole world Vicky Dreiling created with the societal rules of that era. With the women having their "seasons" to find a husband, there's always drama when they want to find the one who gives them butterflies instead of listen to their stubborn, no-nonsense mothers. As much as I wish I could go back to this time period and wear the fancy dresses and attend the balls myself, I guess I have to be contempt with reading about it (which is perfectly okay with me if they end up being as awesome as this book!).

I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but How to Ravish a Rake was great on it's own. If you're a fan of historical romances like me, pick this one up! I know I'm going to be checking out the rest of the books in this series as soon as I can :)

How to Ravish a Rake was an excellent read. It was hot, engaging, and brilliant. It helps that I have a inclination for romances about a married couple falling in love. This one is definitely a worthy addition to the list of greats in that area.

For one, Amy is very admirable yet still seems real. She has her flaws but she does her best to overcome them. I love how she set out to reinvent herself and managed to very successfully. And after she and Will are forced into a marriage to avoid scandal, she doesn't back down and do what society expects her to do (live a separate life from Will after popping out an heir). And she doesn't back down from Will either. They are an adorable couple and I loved seeing them together.

That brings us to our delightful hero, Will. He is interesting in the best way possible. Not only is he a delicious love interest but he is also a dynamic character that will manage to surprise you a few times. And he is so sweet to Amy. Despite the odd circumstances of their marriage, he rises to the occasion and becomes a perfect husband to Amy.

Now, about the way they were forced into the marriage...
They were found in an uncomfortable situation and they had to get married to stem the impending scandal. That whole situation that they were caught in was hilarious. It was so funny and so cute. It made me laugh when they found themselves in the sticky situation. I don't want to say what happened and ruin the surprise so I'll just conclude with: you will love it. It's just the perfect situation to bring this quirky couple together.

The ending was sweet and fairly standard. My only issue was how Amy reacted to certain news about Will and Will finding out certain news about her. She overreacted to epic proportions only to cave in quickly the next morning (after all her bags had been packed). I could see why she was bothered by it, but I didn't think it warranted all that drama.

Besides that, How to Ravish a Rake is top notch in historical romance.
Loved it!

4/5

Vicky Dreiling has done it again. She’s provided the reader with a five star night of entertainment with friends.
Amy Hardwick has gone to London to spend the season with her friend, Georgette, who she suspects will marry her beau, Beaufort this season. Amy has grown from the shy wallflower that we met in How To Marry a Duke, to a young lady dancing at the balls and showing off fashionable gowns that she, herself designed.
However, it is at one of these balls that she finds herself locked in a wine cellar with the devil himself, Will Darcett. Now, with a ring on her finger and a new last name, she’s faced with getting to know this stranger who is her husband. Even worse, she’s has to fulfill the duties of being a wife!
Will has been the spoiled little brother in the Darcett family and Hawk, along with his sisters and mother have decided to cut the financial flow to Will and force him to become a real part of the family. Will wants nothing to do with settling down and in his egotistical manner fails horribly at earning the monies needed to fund his next trip. What he didn’t expect was to find a young lady weeping in a wine celler. However, after spending the night with her he decides to do the “right thing…or is it the “wrong thing?
I hate to see this series end. I loved getting Tessa and Tristan and then Julianne and Hawk along with Georgette from How to Marry a Duke and How to Seduce a Scoundrel. Vicky has always delivered a wonderful story full of witty humor and delightful characters. I can’t wait for more from this talented author!

How To Ravish A Rake is the third book in Dreiling’s How To series. I haven’t read the other books in the series so I didn’t have any expectations going into this. While I enjoyed Dreiling’s writing, I didn’t like this book as much as I was hoping. The pacing for the first half of the book felt really slow. I almost gave up at one point but kept going and the story finally picked up. I also got a bit tired of Amy’s inner monologue. She kept worrying about the same things over and over again.

Will played the part of a rake well. He was charming and flirtatious and I could see why Amy would be attracted to him. I liked that Amy saw through his schemes and didn’t fall all over him like most women did. The banter between the two was good though I would have like more of it. I did enjoy watching Amy and Will get to know each other during their wedding wager. And there was definitely some chemistry between the two. So while I didn’t love this book, Dreiling is doing something right because I was totally invested in the relationship by the end of the book. I did feel that the story ended rather abruptly though. I really wish there had been an epilogue.

This book shows promise and, given the chance, I would read another book in the series. Aunt Hester is particularly hilarious and I would love to see more of her.

I've been hoping for one of the author's books to live up to her debut, but it hasn't happened yet. This book was okay, but it just wasn't on that fantastic level of her first book. There were aspects that I did enjoy about this story, but I think the focus on the bedroom scenes and the silliness of their wager left a bad taste for me.

I've loved the characters of Amy and Georgette since the first book in the series, so maybe I was hoping for more in "their story" (Amy gets to be the lead, while Georgette has a small supporting love story). However, I do still love Amy and how she grows out of her awkward wallflower role into a Regency fashionista.

I also enjoyed Will's growth from the bad boy into a sweet, caring husband. I liked that the sweetness was always there, it wasn't a 360 degree change in his character. The bad boy image turned out just to be a facade to keep people out of his life.

Where the story hit roadblocks for me was that there was just so much focus on the bedroom. There were some scenes with an overall eww factor and it just seemed to take over the sweet story. Also, the wager the couple made between each other was just silly to me, and then the REAL conflict of the story wasn't even fleshed out or resolved until the very end of the book.

This book was nice, but it could have been a lot better with some tweaking.

Amy is trying to throw off her wallflower image. And she wants NOTHING to do with William "the devil" Darcett.
However, Will wants everything to do with her. He finds her fascinating. After they both get 'stuck' in a strange position, they are forced to marry to keep Amy's reputation intact.

SPOILER ALERT: Where the book gets really strange is when they're trying to be in a 'dating' relationship, and then there's a weird subplot where Amy is getting paid for dress designs and then ANOTHER subplot where Will is trying to cover up a gambling debt. Then it gets even weirder when the two of them FINALLY admit they love each other at the very tail END of the book. But then Amy 'leaves' Will because she finds out about his gambling debt and then all of a sudden in the last two pages of the book, they meet up and she 'forgives' him and they go back to their now happily married lives.

Yep! It really didn't make any sense. Needless to say, I think I'm going to skip any future books by Vicky Dreiling
