Since the earliest humans walked the earth, the vast mysteries and wonders of the night sky have fascinated and beguiled us, as we've struggled to understand our place in the cosmos. Even after the last century, which saw important and startling discoveries about our own planet, our solar system and the stars and galaxies beyond, there remain more questions than answers. But those questions - What is dark matter? Are we alone in the universe? Is time travel possible? - provide a fascinating insight into the vastness and infinite possibilities of space that we're yet to determine. The sheer scale of the universe can be intimidating, but in this easily digestible book we embark on an incredible journey through all the essential astronomical discoveries, from the beliefs of ancient civilizations, through to the recent groundbreaking observations of the gravitational waves predicted by Einstein over 100 years ago. There's never been a better time to get to grips with the universe and this essential guide to the cosmos is the perfect place to start!

This was a fascinating read. True I love books of this sort and have read many but never get bored of it. I really liked the set up of this one; we start closer to home and on a relatively small scale and as we progress through the book we get further away from our little planet and it all becomes much larger in scale, a nice way to make your way through the mysteries of the universe.
I thought I might know a lot of this stuff already, particularly in the early chapters but there were still some really interesting facts that were new to me, so even if you have read books like this before don’t let it stop you adding this one to your list/library.
We discover on our journey much about the universe and its science and history too. A really good overview of everything.
As you might imagine there is a lot of information packed in so I didn’t race through it. Taking bite sized chunks at a time is a good idea I found. A lot of this is accessible to the average layman but that’s not to say it doesn’t get complicated at times, and I struggled here and there as there is a lot to take in. Thankfully there is no long winded waffling or complicated jargon here, just plain speaking which is really helpful.
Overall a fascinating read that is very comprehensive/all encompassing! A good book but not something I want to read cover to cover without a break as there is a lot in it (the entire universe in fact LOL)
I won’t remember all I have read and already I am thinking I would like to re-read this at some point.
A solid 5*/5, I can’t really fault it - if you want to find out about the universe read this.
I found this an interesting read. It's split into sections which give you plenty to start from if you wanted to delve deeper into a specific area. Informative, but written in a way that won't get you bogged down with long words you've never heard of or references you don't understand which makes it perfect to retain the information (and there are handy diagrams and charts to help you comprehend the more complicated things). Personally, I retained a lot of what I read. If I had to tell you one thing I've learned from this book it's that there is very little we know about how the universe works/began than I originally thought. And what we do know are mostly only things that haven't been disproven by other things we learn along the way. It's just infinite theories.
"So until the Big Rip brings the curtain down on this universe, long may we continue to look up in awe and wonder..."
What an amazing journey through the stars! Across the universe, from our humble home and out through the solar system. It was such a great read and written in an easy accessible way for those who have never read about the universe before. Split up into neat little chapters and sub titles, it makes for an effortless and enjoyable read whilst explaining the cosmos from stars, to planets, to origins and unknowns.
It’s a great book for those who would like to know more about astronomy and want an introductory start or a refresher over a broad scope of this subject. I really enjoyed it!
This was the second book I read about special relativity, general relativity, the creation of the universe, dark matter, exoplanets, and the universe in general.
I think the history of how astronomy has evolved is very interesting and Stuart did a decent job of taking us through time and explaining huge milestones. I found a few chapters boring, but that’s just my personal opinion and why I’m giving it a 3 stars (high 3).
The book is split up into few-paragraph sections making it easy to digest and also step away from.
Would recommend to anyone with limited knowledge about all things astronomy!
It’s everything it claims to be - clear, easily understandable, yet undeniably fascinating. Had so many moments where I had to close the book to digest what I had read. I’m still so in awe. This was also the first time I fully understood how and why a multiverse could exist, and the implications of that. I think everyone should read this!! ⭐️
This is an excellent little book (all 229 pages of it) that sets out do exactly what it says on the cover - explain the Universe in "bite-sized chunks". I've had this as bedtime reading for a while taking chunks each night and then falling asleep pondering the wonder of the place and the significance of the self in relation to it. Starting locally with our own rock the author zooms outwards. There is a fascinating historical perspective which reveals levels of scientific understanding and questioning going back further than I had realised. It is fascinating how humanity has so often been dominated by the powerful and ignorant whose power has always rested on maintaining ignorance. Not only does science seek to explain and understand the Universe in which we find ourselves, but, as this book demonstrates (although this is outside the authors remit) it also has an emancipatory impact on us. It is one oif those books which also makes you wonder at the smallmindedness and pettiness of much of humanity and human history. There is all that out there, why do people have nothing better to do than knife each other, drop bombs on people and watch inane "talent" shows? Anyway, I digress slightly. The author is very good at using understandable examples and comparisons to help the uninitiated to get to grips with what are after all otherworldly and very complex ideas and facts. While not a fan of jewelry understanding how precious metals are a product of supernovas and the collisions of neutron stars makes me more appreciative of such trinkets! The ability of colliding extreme impact sound waves to mold the shape of a body of rock is enough to inspire any extreme sound engineer. Towards the end of the book as the Universe as an entity is considered, its beginning, and possible end (or not) seems to offer a place where science and philosophy, and even science fiction, can meet and help stretch yet further the boundaries of knowledge and our search for answers to life, the Universe and everything which is surely something we should all be able to embrace (even if only as, like myself, as scientifically illiterate readers who thirst for knowledge and understanding from those doing the hard work).
Viajar no tempo é possível?
I found this super informative though there were some parts I had to reread or pause to fully digest so I could understand what was going on. This is definitely not a binge book! With no astronomy or astrophysics background I was more or less easily able to understand the technical parts the book presented but I do come from an engineering background and did physics (though I hated it) so I can't say for certain if someone with no scientific background would be able to follow along easily. I'd lend this to my dad (likes science, sci-fi, technology etc) but I think my mum(no post secondary education, zero science knowledge, struggles with tech) would struggle with this
I wish I could give it 6 stars. Such a perfect read. 10/10 on all fronts from organization of chapters, quality of content, quality of writing, subtle sprinkles of humour nit in and of itself is not a silly book. No jargon and yet written in such as a way that you don't feel talked down to.
An encyclopaedia of universe in less than 200 plus pages Very interesting to read. Yess, I learned lot about our universe and interestingly explained Every chapter was interesting other than a chapter about Galaxy, was little bit technical A good read!!
I love this book and it will stay on my shelf forever. It was really helpful to review and extend my knowledge of the Universe. I'm just an interested enthusiast with little starting knowledge. Its written with simple explanations but not 'dumbed down' to the extent that meaning is lost. Nor is it over run with euphamisms and metafore like much entry level science. It does, however, have a number of useful illustrations. Starting with the history of astronomy as a background and moving onto the topics we are closest to on the Sun, the Earth and the Moon it moves into the solar system nd then to Stars, Galaxies and the overall Universe, so it builds well on knowledge most people picked up at school or from TV, explains the terminology and expands into the future of the Universe. Its a great read for anyone remotely interested in the subject and also a useful reference for those who have much more understandiing of the workings of our amazing Universe. It took me a long time to read only because I have had little time to do so over the last few months. During the COVID19 pandemic it offered comforting certainty amongst all the other uncertainties.
Elegantly written and it truly accomplished what it set out to do - explaining the knowledge we have of our universe in small digestible chunks, organised systematically from what we are most 'familiar' with, to the more obscure ideas.
I would suggest reading this BEFORE attempting Stephen Hawking's A Brief History of Time. This book will build your interest up and give you a more gradual introduction to the beauty of space, before you proceed on to get blown apart by Stephen Hawking's book which is paced faster and tighter.

"The Universe in Bite-sized Chunks" indeed a very easy quick look into Universe from short history of astronomy. The book is accessible because unlike other book, it does not narrate astronomy chronologically: first things - first discovered, but from tiny parts: planets, stars, galaxies, etc. Each chapters are divided into several paragraphs with particular topic that is discussed, for example, if your read about Earth, there topics such as atmosphere.
