Camfield Legacy #2

After the Rains

Rate this book
Long ago, Natalie’s mother faced an agonizing choice between the two people she loved most, and the difficult resolution to her predicament affects Natalie throughout her young life–fueling a season of teenage rebellion that results in the death of her best friend.

As a young woman, Natalie attempts to put her troubles behind her, ultimately finding solace in the arms of a man with close ties to the tragedy. Yet neither time nor love can liberate her from the past. Determined to confront her terrible guilt, Natalie embarks on a journey that will take her thousands of miles from home and straight into the life and heart of a man unlike any she has ever known.

Confronted with a decision that echoes the one her mother faced so many years before, Natalie finds herself drawn to two men–each of whom holds a claim to her heart. But the sins of her past must be confronted, and an escape from her guilt found, before her heart will be free to find its home.

Showing that God can forgive the gravest of sins, After the Rains beautifully illustrates that his forgiveness comes purely through loving mercy and grace, not by our human efforts to earn it.

Althans.. Dat denkt ze.

Jacky is fantastisch!

A YA book that was very interesting even for this middle-aged person to read.

Part 1. Natalie Camfield is a slightly rebellious highschool girl who cannot believe the guy she has had a crush on for years is interested in her sister. That and a few other teen drama elements drive her to join the "bad" crowd and down a few drinks. On her way home, Natalie is involved in a car crash that leaves two young people dead, including Nat's best friend. What follows is a dark and trying time for Natalie.

Part 2. At college now, Natalie has tried to make peace with her part in the accident. Although she believes in God's forgiveness, and that people around her have also forgiven her, she cannot move past her guilt. Meeting Evan, another survivor of that fatal crash, and becoming more than friends with him, has helped Natalie to start healing from the emotional scars. But she still has not figured out her purpose nor how she could atone for her guilt. She believes her answer lies in mission work in Colombia where her father works among a native tribe.

Part 3. Living in the Colombian jungle is a learning curve for Natalie. She is determined to learn the language, befriend the village people, and even be nice to the gruff Bible translator David. Natalie falls in love with her new home and with David. The latter challenges Natalie's view of God's grace and helps her see she could never earn her salvation or guilt-free life with her works. God's atonement is enough.

Reading this book in 2023 makes it a nostalgic trip back to the days of floppy disks and cell phones without email apps. It is a well-told story of a young woman's journey to true freedom in Christ.

Christian literature is not my bag. This may be a good story,, and a tearjerker if this is your reading choice, but not mine. I will be more careful in my book choices in the hereafter. There is so much to read and I dont have enough time n my life to read all I want .

This is a fantastic sequel by a great author. I love the way that Deborah isn’t afraid to write about the tricky situations that even Christians can get themselves into. So much Christian Fiction seems to focus on conversion, but not on the deepening of faith we experience once born again.
The story of Natalie Camfield, who manages to overcome the mistakes and guilt f her path is inspiring, and a story I’m sure many will be able to relate to. Please read this book!

I started to read this book. I'd read the first one in the series and liked it well enough, but the prologue pretty much tells you what's going to happen beforehand. I didn't finish this book because I wasn't looking forward to going back to read it. It's well written but it gives too much away.

There’s a lot going on in this coming-of-age novel. It spans a large amount of time 4 years is a lot when the character starts out at age 18 driven by a very dramatic, life-altering event. I can’t imagine this story was easy to write!

There are multiple points of view in this book, each character with their own significant backstory (note: I was not aware when I read this book that her mother’s story was told in book 1). I think instead of so many POVs, the story may have been better served to focus on the one character’s story being told (Natalie’s), rather than try to encompass so many perspectives (and past heartbreaks). The other problem with the multiple POVs is that I never felt like I knew any of the characters really well. So, while there was beauty in Natalie’s journey (and by extension, those in her life), her struggles never felt intimate to me. (In fact, I didn’t like Natalie at the start of the book she struck me as a typical whiny teenager and I almost did not continue reading until I revisited the book description.)

While I found parts of the book a little slow and I was not tempted to stay up all night reading, I’m a big fan of the forgiveness/redemption theme, and I applaud the author for taking on such a difficult life-journey. Thus my rating of 4 rather than 3.5. (Note: some may find certain parts of this story a bit on the preachy side.)

After reading Beneath a Southern Sky, I could not wait to read this book. I wanted to follow the lives of Natalie Camfield, her father (Dr. Nathan Camfield) and her other family (Mother, Stepfather, and two sisters). Natalie was in her senior year of high school when she tried breaking out of character to taste what her peers were doing. She was involved in a horrible accident in which two lives were lost. One night one second of time changed everything. Even though everyone has said they forgive her for her part in this tragedy, Natalie cannot escape the messages of guilt that keep entering her dreams and her daylight hours.
We watch Natalie as she struggles with her guilt, the consequences of not following God, and her desire to make restitution. This story takes place on two continents and with two very different people groups. These two groups are linked together by God’s love and saving grace. Don’t forget to keep a box of tissues handy.
Deborah’s main message to her readers is that God completely forgives when we ask, but we must also forgive ourselves. Thanks, Deborah, for another heart-tugging book filled with wisdom and insight.

As usual the author tackles tough situations. This one is a more common. How many rebellious teens have ended up making foolish decisions?
It would have been easier at the beginning if the three daughters hadn't all have names starting with 'N'. I found myself stopping and starting as I sorted out whether it was Nikky or Natalie and which was which.
My least favourite part of the book was the missions part although the "I can save the world" attitude of the main character is common. I'm not really a believer in 'calling' (since it isn't really a Biblical concept except in very unusual situations and in fact we're all 'called' to be holy and to share our hope ...) and so that tended to irritate me. However the word is tossed around a lot in missions and Natalie was the kind of person who would likely believe in such things.
There was plenty of good discussion of issues and some excellent lines to ponder on deeper topics like living with regrets ... these books suit those of us who like our fiction to challenge our thinking.

After reading Beneath a Southern Sky, #1 in this series, years ago, I was eager to give this one a try. There's a lot to love in this story. I love to see a current day missions situation come into the plot, and this book has that. Romance comes into this book, but it's about more than just physical attraction and hormones. The book as a whole features a healthy balance between consequences for sin and forgiveness based upon grace. Natalie, the main character, grows and matures over time. There's a lot to think about in this book and decisions aren't always easy.

This book does take a bit to get into and I feel uses more scenes than are really necessary. The part that happens on the mission field is interesting, but I feel most people would struggle a bit more with the disadvantages of living in the jungle than these characters do. Also training for the kind of ministry they do doesn't seem to be important here. All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book and appreciate Christian fiction with a bit of meat to it.

A Good Read

After the Rains is the second of the Camfield Legacy, and it does not disappoint. The theme of redemption and deliverance that carried the storyline in Beneath a Southern Sky also wafts through this book. Natalie, daughter of Daria (Camfield) Hunter and Nathan Camfield, has some rough times growing up and goes through a rebellious streak that leads to a life changing disaster. How she manages to survive and thrive makes an excellent, stay-up-all-night-to-finish book. I will add what made me give four stars instead of five--the editing was lacking in both books. No quotation marks, missing apostrophes, and a dearth of commas where they were needed as well as a plethora of them where they were not needed! The lack of editing did not make it unreadable, but would have read much smoother with it.

Life Altering Decisions!

I realized after I started reading this book that this book is part 2 in a 2 book series. By the time I realized this I was involved in the story and went on to finish the book. Natalie and Sara were friends and did everything together. This included making bad decisions as young people often do. One night they decided to drink and then drive. Natalie was driving and Sara was killed in an accident that occurred when Natalie pulled out of a driveway.

Natalie suffered guilt but went on to college after high school. This book tells us about her life during and after these events took place and tells us how she learned to face life when challenges arrive.

I am so glad I discovered what a great author Deborah Raney is. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Excellent book. I enjoyed it from start to finish. Natalie made a big mistake by driving drunk that caused the death of her best friend, Sara. The guilt was overwhelming. I loved all the Christian comments in this book. The big thing I took away from this story is that God suffered on the cross for our sins. We must forgive others, but in the process we must forgive ourselves. David taught this lesson to Natalie - by still trying to find the one thing that will take away the guilt she feels, she is brushing aside the gift that God gave and is trying to do what human can do. That can never happen. God is the only source of true forgiveness. Natalie was being arrogant he said. Forgiveness from God is for everyone through his love and mercy. This message is also good for David as he has committed a sin in his life that he cannot go back and make amends.

After The Rains

This has been a wonderful journey with Natalie Camfield to Timone. It really is hard to express how this story has affected me personally. The story tells of a young woman, Natalie, who gave into wanting to try something different. This resulted in her best friend dying. Natalie struggled with forgiveness, even though others involved had forgive her. She could not find a place of acceptance of Christ’s forgiveness until one day she was reading her Bible and the scripture spoke to her. You will receive a blessing from this story and understanding what our Lord did on Calvary for us.

The first book in this series about did me in.. it was a stressful emotional read, that I loved! This one is emotional but not as stressful. It is definitely not a light easy read, but it had light-hearted moments.

You might read that and think.. "Well I don't want to read that book!" I hope you WILL read it and book 1. These books are compelling and cause me to consider things I've never considered. They push me outside the typical and into the what ifs. AND what I love is while they are not neat and tidy, God is always faithful in these stories as He is in real life!

Book 3 is coming out this year. Cannot wait!

I really enjoyed reading this book and seeing how Daria’s decision in the past book influenced her daughter Natalie.
The struggles that Natalie went through feeling like she doesn’t belong in her own family mixed in with teenage rebellion and bad choices resulted in a tragedy for her. It was really interesting to read about how Natalie dealt with the guilt and how even after she felt forgiven by God she still felt like she had to do something in order to make up for what she did.
I thought this series was a two book series until I recently found out that a third book is being released very soon and I’m now looking forward to reading it as well.

It was good. Story wise it heart my heart. The ending was the sweetest thing. Writing wise.. ehhh. The writing style annoyed me a little bit because it kind of threw away any sense of "show don't tell." I also feel like the first two thirds of the book could have been condensed down to a prologue or the first couple chapter and the last third of the book should have been the main part of the book. It felt like I was just trying to get through all of the back story to get to the stuff happening in the last third of the book, only to have it be so fast paced that I didn't have time to savor the dynamic between Natalie and David. Otherwise it was a very enjoyable read

3.75 StarsI struggled through the first part of this story, as I felt it read very much like a YA genre. Also, it didn't pick up from the epilogue in the first book, but seamed to fill in the gaps between the first book and the epilogue.
That being said, I did enjoy the 2nd part of the book more. I like the way Natalie matured in her faith. It was nice to see Daddy-Nate back in this book and finding out more the the missionary work he was doing. I was a bit disappointed though that there wasn't an epilogue in this. Looking forward to the 3rd and final book of the series. I read this via KU.

This book had every emotion, sadness, depression, anger, love, compassion & forgiveness. I LOVED this book! I struggled with the first half because of the sadness in it, but loved the last half!
I love Natalie! She is such an amazing character and God used her and changed her so much!
David seriously has to be one of my favorite guy characters of all time! I loved him! I will probably read this book again just to visit him!
I could go on and on but I will just say this, YOU MUST READ THIS SERIES!!!!!

Having just read the first book in the Camfield Legacy (Beneath a Southern Sky), I was eager to finish the Camfield's stories. An excellent coming-of-age story about the daughter, Natalie. It is faith-filled and deals with the consequences of one's choices. Sibling rivalry, teenage angst, mission work, and a little romance all kept my interest. I am looking forward to reading more of this author's books. Rebecca Cook did a great job narrating the story which made for a good listening experience.

A story of struggle & redemption!

As a teen, Natalie makes some poor choices which she carries with her to the primitive land of Timoné. While getting to know her biological father, a missionary doctor, her life is impacted in ways she could never have imagined in the life she left behind back in her hometown. Inspirational, thought- provoking with a little romance for good measure. Kudos, Ms. Raney!

Kept my attention

This is my favorite book so far of Deborah Raney’s. Having been a missionary myself, I was drawn into this deeply moving story. I never experienced anything even remotely like this, but found myself drawn into the lives of the characters, Natalie, her mom and step-father, and her birth father, a missionary in a remote village called Timone. I ended up staying up until 3 am finishing the book.

I just loved this book, the series, and catching up with some of the characters from Beneath a Southern Sky. Natalie's story spans several years, and is sometimes difficult to read due to her struggles and bad choices. However, I loved reading about her call to the mission field and the way her life turned around. I am happy to have found a "new to me" author with this series, and look forward to reading her backlist.

A lot of wrong mistakes by youth, but God help turn them around.

A good story on how God forgives even our worst mistakes. There is nothing we can do to make up for our mistakes. We can feel regret, but we don't have to carry the guilt for the rest of our lives. God forgives us and we need to forgive ourselves and go on and do something positive with our lives. Loved the miracle; I have seen God's miracles in my life as well especially when I was a missionary in Malaysia.

Many Christian based novels have a cheesy element to them
Mainly in the romance area. I was glad that this was kept to a minimum in the story. The story was very predictable but not as trite as so many of these type of novels are. Sometimes I need to break up my reading with a predictable feel good storyline. BTW I am a Christian and long for quality writing in Christine fiction ie Some of Francine Rivers, Ted Dekker and others so always on the search.

Exceptional book

This story is very heart moving and keeps you in suspense right to the end. Even though you know it will end good it is well written and entertaining .
The characters were well chosen and very strong people who were willing to share their lives together helping others less fortunate than themselves .The natural beauty of the area was well documented anx informative. A lovely read.

Good Read

I enjoyed this sequel. However the storyline seemed to move a little slower than the first book. The thread running thru the plot was about forgiveness, Very good explanations about accepting forgiveness from others as well as forgiving & accepting yourself. Good author!

Learning about God's forgiveness

..A wonderful story of a girl who made some bad choices and lived with guilt and regret . She had a strong desire to go to the country that her birth father lived in..She still carried the load of guilt and by the lessons she learned there, she finally felt the fullness of God's forgiveness.
