Rate this book
Award-winning author Barbara Shoff is passionate about writing, genealogy, solving puzzles, saving money, and sharing what she's learned. She was moved by the number of adoptees and their families who attended classes she taught at her local library. Barbara decided to share her process that doesn't rely on costly annual subscriptions, much like a recipe anyone can follow. She calls her method The Triple Whammy. The main data from your autosomal DNA testing company, uploaded to the free online tool site GEDmatch, mixed in with WikiTree, a free single-entry, one-world tree. The Your family. Genealogy, a favorite hobby for years (her novel A Community of Butterflies: Chrysalis contains many of her family surnames) still has a sequel in the works, and she confesses, "It still isn't quite right. It may never be, but I will return to it soon."

She decided to take a break and focus on her new found passion, blending DNA and genealogy. "I pounded my head against the wall for several years trying to get my head around DNA. Then I read Jim Bartlett's blog Segment-ology and it started to come together."

She began writing her blog, The Blundering DNA Genealogist. "I tell people about the tools I use and how I use them."

She began teaching DNA + Genealogy at her local library and then other groups began asking her to share with them.

She was moved by the number of adopted people who were attending her classes.

"Each case is different, yet often the same in many ways." She began writing down her methods and looking for ways to streamline them. Then she began sharing them with people who are adopted.

I Am A Leaf Following Branches to Find My Tree is her adoptee proven step-by-step method for finding biological family without costly genealogy subscriptions. She uses atDNA, GEDmatch, and WikiTree and calls it The Triple Whammy. "I use a few other tools too. I love DNAPainter and the interactive version of Blaine T. Bettinger's Shared cM Relationship Chart."

Her book also covers basic computer skills that people need to work the process as well as enough words and terms for ease in understand the very basics of DNA.
