The Hunt

Kidnapped, corralled, and marked, Vesa Watson refuses to break. A nameless face in the sea of a dozen or so other women who were snatched off the street just like her, Vesa refuses to show any sign of weakness. She can’t. There’ll be no hope of escape if she loses it now. Unsure what is going to happen, she knows one thing for certain. She’s going to fight! No matter what, no matter who, no matter how, she’s going to fight with everything she has even if the captor who’s had her marked is some sexy, dominant, beast of a man who can’t keep his eyes off her. The Hunt has been a part of wolf shifter history for as long as anyone can remember. Still, it doesn’t keep Haddix BloodMoon from fuming at his forced participation. Tantamount to an arranged marriage, The Hunt is the Council’s way of controlling the packs. Worse, the crying, sniveling women who were taken and transported to the event’s mountain site aren’t his type. No, Haddix needs a dominant female. A strong-willed, no-nonsense, take no sh*t woman is what his wolf needs. When he finds a little fighter among the offerings, both he and his wolf take notice. Vesa thought that being kidnapped and forced into marriage with a wolf-shifter was the biggest threat to her future, but it’s not. It’s falling for her new mate, Haddix BloodMoon. *** “It’s simple ladies, the man spoke. “When you hear the howl, you run. Doesn’t matter what direction. You. Run! If you don’t run, if you stay here, drop to your knees in fear or submission, it simply means you’ve denied your Hunter the benefit of the chase. He won’t like it. I promise you won’t either. You’ll get a five-minute head start. You’ll need it. I reiterate. When the howl bays, run! Hunter? Run? So that was the game. Suddenly, the paint made sense. They’d been brought here to be hunted down by these men but for what? Had they paid just for the experience of hunting humans down like they were animals? Her eyes dipped to the different colored paint on each woman’s chest. Like licking a doughnut, so no one else touches it! She wanted to puke, and it only intensified when she realized that these Hunters could only have one end game. She and all the other women were going to be chased down and killed. Before she could even register what was happening, the men surrounding them all suddenly backed up. Vesa’s eyes scanned the forest around them, seeking out the best path when her eyes snagged on a wooden structure that looked like a row of stalls. There was a single man in each stall. Her eyes tracked down the men pacing in their respective stalls and landed on Haddix. He was watching her, his eyes intense, and it made her sick that a few short minutes ago she was thinking he was hot and now he was going to be hunting her like she was a deer! Screw him! Screw this game! Her lips thinned into a grim line, and she lifted both hands and gave him two middle finger salutes. If she was dying today, it was going to be on her terms. Her belly dipped when he merely beamed a grin and then blew her a kiss. Jerk! Spinning she gave him her back and locked her eyes on a path. Hands shaking and blood rushing too loudly in her ears, she wondered if she’d even be able to hear this stupid howl.

My pack territory is in Central Montana, between Stone Crow Estates and the North Fortress. Born and raised in an untamed location that bridges the gap between rolling prairies and majestic mountain peaks, I am born to a family that also bridges the gap between cultures. My father’s people boast a fiercely proud Scandinavian ancestry while my mother’s tribes descend from two savagely beautiful and unique nations (White Clay and Nakoda) that inspire my Skin Walker series.

I'm a huge fan of MMA, boxing, 30 Seconds to Mars, DMX, Nahko and Medicine for the People, and 21 Pilots (“…sometimes quiet is violent). I also love to read because it encourages me to write. (I hate it when authors add that they love coffee and chocolate. Really? Who doesn't love coffee and chocolate?) Anyway, I love beer...kidding. I don't love beer but we are engaged in a very serious relationship. (Mom, please don't call me when you read this.)

Oh this book .... So I read the blurb. It sounded a lot like Kristen Ashley's The Golden Dynasty (one of my all time favorite books), with the whole Hunt idea. It intrigued me enough to want to give a try.

My first issue. Fuck. The author uses it a lot, and I do mean A LOT. Sometimes, twice in one sentence. At first I thought ok, it's the way she decided to convey just how alpha and macho and strong the male characters were, but nope, women over use the word too. I'm normally not bothered by that word at all, but when it's thrown around left and right - it just becomes annoying. If you have ever read a Jordan Silver book, that's what this one was sounding like.

I thought Vesa was not likable. Strangely, the other female character in the book was way more enjoyable to read, hell, she even told Vesa all the stuff that was annoying about her, so props to her. Afften came across as a strong female but not to the point where it was obnoxious, unlike Vesa. The other female character that makes a bit of an appearance is Circe (here is The Golden Dynasty again), but oh man, I sooooo did not like her one bit either. Basically, I wished the book had been about Afften. Which takes me to my next point.

I don't get authors that have two concurrent stories going in one book. There are basically like 5 POVs here. Male and Female main characters, secondary couple, and then one other guy. I mean for a chapter or two there, you basically got 3 couples for the price of one. I mean I understand why it was done with the two main couples. The relationship between Vesa and Haddix was essentially non existent, they needed help from Afften. I'm positive the female characters interacted way more with each other than they did with their counterparts. That's just wrong. There is one particular chapter that made me want to give up. It was so incredibly and utterly pointless and long. This goes hand in hand with the whole Vesa and who again? Yeah, that guy. They're sitting in a car, and Vesa essentially re told the whole book, from the beginning to that point - which was at the 70% mark by the way. Why ? I mean if I had known that was coming up, I would have skipped everything and just read her little rant and I would have been all caught up with the story !!! FUCKING POINTLESS.

Lastly - remember how Joey used to say "how you doin'?. Well, get ready to enjoy that way of speaking more, since that's how the men speak.

"where we going"
"I ain't letting you go"
"woulda put you in one"
"where you from"

See what I mean ? Yes, clearly this is the author's way to convey their personalities, which basically means they're like clones of each other since they all speak the same. I try to highlight things here and there so anyone reading my reviews can see that it's not like I'm pulling stuff out of thin air here. This is what the author wrote. So you know, check those out too.

The ending. OMG, don't get me started on the ending. There isn't one. It was the most random ending ever. There isn't even all the usual pages with the author's links, etc., it literally just stops. No epilogue. I mean, I suppose you can assume there will be a second book, but the author gives nothing away.

I gave it two stars because the typos and editing fails were minimal, and be as it may be, it didn't make me want to throw my kindle at the wall. Should you read it ? If you've got time to kill and nothing good to read, yeah, I guess so. Just don't expect some big caliber writing.

I was so excited when I read the synopsis, sounded right up my ally with alpha male and tough as bones chick. However, I thought Vesa started off bad ass but turned into a whiny pathetic individual. I also thought the multiple point of views very distracting and repetitive. by 85 % through the book, I was annoyed. Would have been better to stick to two main characters, focusing on their story, instead it felt like I was reading three different novels at once.

I picked this up because it was on KU and sounded similar to one of my all-time fav’s . Well, Vesa is no Circe, and Haddix isn’t anywhere close to Dax level of cool. 😊 In theory it looked good, but there were a few problems.

The characters were flat. Vesa started out tough enough, but quickly turned into whiny and pitiful. Haddix wasn’t very alpha. Unlike GD, the couple doesn’t really develop a relationship, and there’s not any chemistry. This is like a no burn until about 90% when they have sex. I understood (to a point) her reasoning, but in fiction land I like my H & h to get on the same page before the end.

The book flow/outline is distracting. There’s almost like 2-3 plots running at the same time, and several POV’s in the mix. It’s confusing and repetitive. Also, the writing consists of several really small (3-4 word) sentences that made the flow choppy.

Bottom Line- Not bad, not great. It’s free to read with KU.

I found myself enjoying this more than expected. The h was rightfully stubborn. I didn't feel it was overly dramatic of her. There were two storylines. Usually, that bothers me, but Biller kept my interest with both couples. I liked how the characters in the Bloodmoon pack naturally became introduced in the story. I'm going to keep going with this series.

I'm giving this story 2.5 stars. It had an interesting premise, however, I feel it fell short. I think there were some inconsistencies within the story.

1. How could the Omegas running the Hunt not defer to Alpha Bloodmoon without punishment?

2. I did not like the fact that Haddick did not really make much effort to woo Vesa. Once he got her home , he just expected her to adapt.

3. Afften was annoying in her efforts to "persuade" Vesa about shifters.

4. They did not have SEX until 92% into the book. (LOL)

I didn't feel a slow burn with couple which can sometimes be just as hot as the sex. I fel that Haddix and Vesa were more in their heads and neithe bothered to make any efforts to change that. Also, the drama/confrontation at the end was anticlimactic. After almost 2-3 months there was absolutely NO reason for Kylon to come and try to get Vesa. I understand why the Marshall pack came after Afften however it was simply to make Vesa dtay.

5. Vesa's sister was RIDICULOUS.

Heat level was only🔥.

This wasn’t bad at all, I was a bit put off at the beginning as Haddix totally disagrees with the kidnapping of human women for the hunt, this time it’s for the pack alphas of course these women have no idea what’s going to happen to them, they do not realise they’re to be mated to the pack alphas who are shifters, but first they must run and the alphas must chase the woman of their choice. Haddix totally does a complete 180 when he sees Vesa who’s one of the women. That’s all it takes for him to be onboard with the hunt.

I liked this it was quite a good shifter romance, Haddix is the pack alpha but most of the time he’s not very alpha. In fact some other members of his pack seem a bit more alpha than him at times. I liked Vesa she’s a do not mess with me type of character I enjoyed reading her reactions to what was happening to her. I’m assuming this is the first in a series. I will certainly check out more in this series from this author.

Haddix and Vesa- a cute little paranormal shifter romance. After reading some of the rather harsh reviews I almost passed up the book. Did the other reviewers have some fair points? Yes, but the level of their dissatisfaction seem out of proportion now that I’ve read the book.

Vesa is sassy, curvy, (perhaps a bit of a negative nelly), and a survivor. She grew up in the foster care system and that’s helped shape her outlook on life and learn her own strength. As the story evolved I do wish the Vesa grew as a person- becoming more flexible and understanding.

Haddix has the patience of a saint and the body of a god. I wish there had been a bit more action in his wolf form but that’s a very minor grievance. Definite book boyfriend material!

Good read but sadly disappointing

I enjoyed the story the whole plot but it was too much and yet way too little. Too many characters jammed into one story and very little romance. She could have done much better by cutting back on trying to fill in the void with other people's stories and just concentrate on the main characters. During this story not only are you reading about the main characters but then you've got one of the alphas enforcers meets a chick and marks her, and one of his other enforcers falls for the main characters sister. So back and forth the author jumps telling what's going on with all these people and it was just disappointing hell the main characters didn't finally get intimate until the last two chapters so I don't think I would recommend this as a must read sorry.

Frustrating.

I equally loved and hated this book.
I gave this book 5 stars because, aside from a few spelling errors here and there, this book was fantastic. I loved the story line. Loved the characters and the chemistry. Loved the fact that there were 3 couples stories going on at the same time. First book I’ve read in the kindle romance section like it and I’ll say I’m impressed. Usually shifter books are corny and I can’t even finish them. This book blew it out of the water. Very unique concept and I loved the female characters throughout. Instead of just blindly going Gaga over the hero’s they make it a slow build and keep their heads while being honest with themselves and those around them. Recognizing that terrible things were happening to them or around them but accepting and working through the issues.
What I hated about this book? Out of all the story lines you only get 2 love scenes between the first two characters. And they weren’t even good. Why even write the other couples and not write that? I get super annoyed at authors who will write one explicit scene but no more. Not to mention, I felt cheated that I didn’t get to read about Afften and Brayden’s scene. You’re either in or your not. Either write a book that has implied sex scenes, which is perfectly fine and I enjoy the book regardless, or, if you’re going to go all in and describe penetration, at least make it good. I know this is really just my crappy personal opinion, but while I couldn’t put this book down, the ending did frustrate me. I do recommend this book, but just be aware you’ll be a bit frustrated.

This book actually made me angry

Look I really wanted to like this book I really did. The writings good and there's a flair of humor I enjoy in my books. But the guilting of the main girl was absolutely sickening! I love strong main girls who take no nonsense from anyone especially from the main guy or having a timid lead girl growing and becoming strong. But author made the lead girl give up and act mopey instead of fighting! I've read stories where the lead girl gets kidnapped by the lead guy! And they where good! Because in the end the lead girl never gave up and turned the bad situation in her favor! And I love these type of stories! This...This isn't one of them. THEY GUILT HER INTO STAYING. SHE LOSES THE WILL TO FIGHT COMPLETELY! And sure the author gave a fairly good reason as to why that would be the prudent choice, but come on, the way the other characters acted should have had lead girl believing it was well... Not the truth(trying really hard not to swear!). That got me so mad I raged quit the book. She just never got her fire back and that was so disappointing! There was so much potential and it just fell flat. :(

I just read this book a second time. It is one if my all time favorites because the female main character stays as angry at her situation as any rational person would. No rolling over because the male main character was so hot or so smart. Strong people don't give up.

There was something missing about this book... I don't know if I was expecting more brutality from the Alpha, more description other than him being "massive" or the "most dominant" Alpha, but once the Hunt was over, he turned into somewhat of a softie and the heroine, who at first seemed like a badass, just whined for a majority of the book. Even another character acknowledged that she was being difficult. I get that she was scared out of her mind, but the hero gave her no cause to continue to complain for most of the book. You felt the physical attraction between them both, but what else was holding them together? It felt a bit hollow. I have no problem viewing this as a shifter romance more on the sweet side, but given the description and the cover, I thought it was going to be a bit more dark than that given all of the recent Omegaverse offerings that are dark erotica and where the Alpha's dominance and traditions are challenged in the face of the mate's reluctance and outright fear. I felt not much of this tension either with the main characters or with the other characters like Brayden. The most interesting element of this story actually was Tyson and Cersi so I'm eager to see what happens in their story.

"She’s going to fight! No matter what, no matter who, no matter how, she’s going to fight with everything she has"
That quote had me optimistic, but I'm learning that these types of books might not be for me, I just get so aggravated reading them.
I always hope that *plot twist* the woman will say "Hell NO" and fight back, kill the captor/forced mate/forced husband...forced [fill in the blank], then escape and live happily ever after...but that never happens. Free will, independent thinking and a character who is said to be a strong woman still in the end always gives in to Stockholm's syndrome or "mate bond" whatever they usually call it and you're just supposed to go with it and pretend that it's love, a happy ending and not force and kidnapping.
That being said...
The same way you would say that someone has a talent for painting, even though you didn't personally like that one particular painting. I would say that objectively I'm sure it's a good book, it's well written and other people do seem to like it. The whole concept of it just bothers me.

I read this simple because I met Susan Bliler at an expo, as she lives in the same town as me. I am not one for these types of novels, however, being a Montana resident and wanting to pay it forward by purchasing this two-part series (complete with a hand written note) , I dove right in. (Susan, if you read this, you are amazing and I adore how kind and helpful you were to me).

This novel focuses on Vesa, who is gathered among others for an annual Hunt, in the woods of Montana. She and one of the men, Haddix (also wolves of some sort) enter a rocky sort of relationship.

This is a really awesome concept, however, I must say the editor didn't do such a great job, as I found grammatical errors on nearly every page. But these books are still a good read. Check them out if you need romance in your life. 😉

Dem perspective tho!

This story had some interesting perspectives. I was kind of expecting a Stockholm romance so I was all ready to make a break for it but nah, everything was all about free will in the face of circumstances...plus hot shifter guys who kick ass. (Somebody definitely has a crush on Superman)

Afften is the best part of the book. I would’ve read an entire 300 page novel of just her and Brayden and been super happy.

Will I ever reread this book? Probably not (I rarely do)
But if I ever saw this cover I’d probably say to myself, “That book was kind of awesome.

Kudos to the author for pulling off a good book with interesting character dynamics, exploring all the angles, and switching main character perspectives without losing the reader.

Before I read this book I really thought that it would have at least had one sex scene. Not that it bothered me nor did it affect my feelings about this book I just wanted to give anyone who is about to or wants to read this novel a quick disclamer.
Now during my duration of reading this book one problem that kept occurring for me was the fact that instead of reading about the story of Vessa and Haddix, I also has to read the story of others as well such as the beta and his mate and then I also read a POV of Vessas sister and her love interest. Now although this may not bother some it did however bother me because ..... Feel free to check out the rest of my review on my blog which is listed in the link on my home page!

I just loved it!

The Hunt is thoroughly entertaining. It’s a story I’ve read before. It specifically reminds me of a Dragon shifter series, but this group of guys are more than alpha; they’re heart melting. The monologues in which they finally confess their love are epic. Both Haddix and Brayden are well characterized and dang near flawless as love interest.

As the main female character and the participant in the hunt, Vesa has the most convincing and authentic responses to the idea of shifters and mating I’ve ever read. She’s strong and rational. She doesn’t just go with the flow, but she’s not annoyingly angsty either. I wouldn’t change a moment of the story, and I can’t wait to read about Cersi and The Monster.

The BloodMoon pack men were great. Shifter Afften was an admirable heroine. Disappointingly, human Vera was unlikable.

There were two couples in this book. Afften and Brayden's relationship had chemistry and was more developed than Vera and Haddix's relationship. There was no sex with Afften and Brayden. Unfortunately, the only sex scene between Vera and Haddix was really bad.

The ending was rushed with Vera's sister and a pack member featured in the cliffhanger.

The story would have been better if it focused just on Afften and Brayden, adding more relationship development and, of course, GOOD sex. Brayden had an angsty background that wasn't even covered.

I'd give it 3 1/2 stars if I could

I tried to like this book more, I truly did, but there were too many things that got in the way. First, I'm not sure why they didn't explain the situation to Vesa better instead of acting like she was being irrational. Second, describing a woman's menstrual cycle as good medicine (the author's way of explaining a woman's sway over their wolves) was just strange. Lastly, I didn't feel any connection with the characters, I think the author was trying to be unique in trying to develop a different way that wolves claim their mates and also how the, for lack of a better word, magic works, for me it fell flat.

Storyline hard to take

Let me start by saying I LOVE most of her books. However, I had a really hard time dealing with the concept of women being kidnapped and terrorized. While the main character ended up falling for her kidnapper (yes Stockholm Syndrome) and got an HEA, I still was never able to get past the original kidnapping and terrorizing. It just allowed for physically powerful men to abuse women who were kidnapped (and I worried about what happened to all the other victims). I know it's just a book, but the underlying premise left a bad taste in my mouth. Maybe it's just me, and others find this kind of storyline appealing.

The BloodMoon Pack

This first novel in this series The Hunt is about Haddix and Vesa but there is so much else going on in the novel that it is just a delight! The BloodMoon Pack is just four shifters but these are some of the most deadly shifters that exist. Haddix was elected Alpha! Haddix wears the title well. Vesa, a human female, caught in a world 🌎 that she is trying to understand. Toss in Brayden, Tyson, Noah, Cersi, Afften, and the rest of other characters and this is a darn good novel! Great work! Enjoy!

Loved This

Veda and Afften , two women from two worlds both find themselves at a hunt set up for Alpha's to get mates. Afften is a shifter and shouldnt be here. Her pack beta being the ass he is thinks to s ccx are her into submission,. Not likely. Veda is a feisty human kidnapped by the council to be part of the hunt and her feistiness has caught the eye of the Fiercest alpha at the hunt. Neither one of them is prepared for the shit storm that goes down, but mabey they will find thier way to each other and neutral ground, DanaLynn

Tough one to rate...

Four stars for the characters, three for the editing, and maybe 2.5 stars for the plot. Kidnapping and coercion just don’t rank high in stories that I want to read. “Good villains who are supposed to be good guys forced into situations beyond their control...just gets confusing. Especially when you add all the rest of the characters and side plots. A society that survives by kidnapping and forced mating isn’t to my taste. Not sure if I will continue this series.

I do enjoy reading books with this sort of theme, which still surprises me, but I've always disliked where the woman always caves in and turns in to some human doormat, but not with this author. I love the fact that the storyline is strong, a real story, not just one sexual encounter after another, the characters have flaws, the men are shown to be, at times, just as vulnerable as the women.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, could hardly put it down and once completed, I read the second book the day after.

Meh not her style

At first I was excited to see another series from Bliler. However, as I started reading it i realized it was not in the same style her other books were. It didn't feel like she wrote it. It felt slapped together, like sections where written at different times them mashed all the while forgetting what was already written. At least it was better than "Prince of Cats". I'll stick with the other two series from know on.

Stockholm Syndrome

Even though VESA wasn’t supposed to fall for him because of Stockholm Syndrome she totally does since the writing didn’t explore the characters enough. It felt thrown together. She fought so hard not to like him or the situation that she was in to suddenly caving in without him doing much. I really really wanted to like this story because it seemed like it was going to be different. But it wasn’t.
