Adams was born in Windham, New York in 1957 and received his Bachelor's degree in Economics from Hartwick College in 1979.
He also studied economics and management for his 1986 MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.
In recent years, Adams has been hurt with a series of debilitating health problems. Since late 2004, he has suffered from a reemergence of his focal dystonia which has affected his drawing. He can fool his brain by drawing using a graphics tablet. On December 12, 2005, Adams announced on his blog that he also suffers from spasmodic dysphonia, a condition that causes the vocal cords to behave in an abnormal manner. However, on October 24, 2006, he again blogged stating that he had recovered from this condition, although he is unsure if the recovery is permanent. He claims to have developed a method to work around the disorder and has been able to speak normally since. Also, on January 21, 2007, he posted a blog entry detailing his experiences with treatment by Dr. Morton Cooper.
Adams is also a trained hypnotist, as well as a vegetarian. (Mentioned in, "Dilbert: A Treasury of Sunday Strips 00).
He married Shelly Miles on July 22, 2006.

This was my first Dilbert book, so I am sold on it heavily (unlike others who say this is his weakest work).
I even contemplated making WoW my office Bible, just so I could be reminded each day not to take corporate-ness seriously. You see, if you can actually suspend your assumption that this book is just humor, you may experience an enlightenment of sorts - suddenly, all the other management books you've read on high performance and corporate citizenship and ethics and leadership, seems like elaborately-constructed-lies to get you to toe the line, while everyone else is living the way of the weasel. (Phew)
So after reading WoW, I do secretly believe that this IS a Dilbert world, and the Real World is just faking it :).
And yes, Scott Adams probably has met everyone I work with :P.

My advice about this book: don't read it all at once. Put it in your bathroom.
This is probably one of the best bathroom books ever created. It's a book to open, get fueled by a great random comic/reader's letter/ Scott Adams's insight about stuff, and proceed with your life.
The book is as witty, insightful, true and funny as Scott Adams can be, but no use trying to ingest it all at once.

April 19, 2025Okay, as a rule I don’t rate books I don’t finish. I’ve had this book for years, and I’ve taken it out once in a while to try to read it, but I’ve never been able to get further than a few pages at a time. I think I’m going to get this to the local book exchange and not try to read this ever again. Maybe someone gets some enjoyment out of this. I’ve worked different jobs over the years, both blue-collar and white-collar, but I’ve never been a cubicle worker. Maybe that’s why I just don’t get it. Whatever it is, I’m not interested in making more attempts at reading this stuff.

Okay, this is Scott Adams, who is a (seriously there is a whole lotta rape culture in those links, please be careful) so I should've known what I was getting into, but for some reason, I had hope. Dilbert is frequently genuinely funny to me, particularly when he constrains himself to the idiocy of management.
Unfortunately, while there are rather entertaining bits in the beginning, this book has an entire chapter on why women are weasels and why the glass ceiling doesn't exist, and I just cannot recommend it at all. Don't go here. I'm sorry Dilbert's creator is an asshole.

Много смешна книга, не толкова добра колкото първата, и по-скоро, ако ми се чете пак, ще прочета дилбърт или другите му книги и за това тя е 4, а не 5 звезди, но все пак доста добра, доста смешна и доста вярна.
Скот Адамс знае и разбира ПОВЕЧЕ (не най-много, а просто повече) как работи света от повечето хора, които работят в науката, повечето философи, хората които работят в телевизията, във вестниците, абе като цяло повече от повечето "умни" хора.
Единствено успешните бизнесмени вероятно разбират повече как работи света, след като света прави това което те искат, но пък те не пишат толкова забавни и полезни книги, за това fuck them...
Ако нещо затрие западния свят, освен астероид, то това вероятно ще е илюзията за рационалност, която се опитва да стане модерна последните 100 години.
Може и да не ни е приятно да си приемем тежката истина (и за това икономическото мислене е толкова важно за всеки един човек), но хората просто сме идиоти! Всички хора и почти през цялото време.
И не можем да не сме идиоти, можем единствено да приемем тези лимитации на нашата реалност и да се опитаме да направим максимално много в границите на тези лимитации. Да не се ядосваме или да не очакваме нещо друго, когато другите хора са идиоти - ние също сме идиоти.
А най-опасна е мисълта, че е възможно да съществуват хора - не идиоти. МНОГО ОПАСНА!
А най-смешното е, че всичко написано в тази книга - за това как хората сме идиоти - до колкото си спомням напълно кореспондира с всички научни неща, които знам от поне 5 научни книги за това как работи мозъка. Книги като Предвидимо ирационални, The power of Habit, The righteous mind, Thinking fast and slow (тази е дори от Нобелов лореат по икономика ууууууууУУУУууу...) и др., Те просто разказват с малко по-сложни думи, и с много по-малко чувство за хумор това как е научно докаязано, че ХОРА СМЕ НЕРАЦИОНАЛНИ ИДИОТИ.
За сега съм стигнал до извода, че в в училище трябва да "научат" (т.е. индоктринират) децата да правят и знаят няколко задължителни неща:
1. Да четат и пишат (въпреки, че с аудиокнигите няма да им се налага да четат книги, а по-скоро да си прочетата договора с М-тел преди да го подпишат)
2. Математиката до към 4-ти клас + лееееека висша математика (концепции, като геометрична прогресия - което за незнаещите звучи сложно, но всъщност е елементарно - колкото повече толкова повече)
3. Бейсик ИКОНОМИКА - дори първата глава на Основи на Икономиката на Томъс Соуел, където се обяснява как нашият свят, нашата реалност в която живеем има лимити - има недостиг и всичко започва оттам
5. Историята на който и да е период и държава. Буквално няма значение. История на хората до преди 100 години е била една и съща - глад, болести и мизерия!
До колкото знам повечето историци са на мнението (т.е. в ехо балона), че единственото друго хубаво време за живеене е било по времето на Pax Romana, от след убийството на Цезар и възкачането на Октавиан (демек - края на сериала на HBO - Rome), до падането на Рим.
И колкото и да е било хубаво това време, ще ви кажа само едно едниствено нещо, за да ви убедя, че сега е МНОГО по-добре - Хирургични операции без упойка!
Абе цялата човешка история, до преди 100-тина години е било ужасно време за живеене в сравнение със сега.
Никой не знае със сигурност, какво сме уцелили сега точно, много умни идиоти са в ехо бъбъла, че е свързано с частната собственост, свободата на словото, свободата, ваксините, разделянето на водата от канализацията и антибиотиците, но каквото и да е със сигурност трябва да се опитаме да го запазим :D Поне докато аз съм жив, за след като умра, не ми пука :D
4. Бейсик Статистика - не за друго, а за подготовка към точка 6.
6. Може би най-важното!!! - ХОРАТА СМЕ ИДИОТИ! ПОЧТИ ВИНАГИ! ВСИЧКИ ХОРА! Рационализмът е илюзия, в които хората, които са най-големи идиоти вярват. А най- НАЙ-големите идиоти, вярват, че те самите са рационални.
Това е най-ползотворното нещо което съм научавал през живота си. Най-полезното, най-обясняващо живота ми. Най-учещо ме на разбиране, на емпатия и пр. Ако мислите, че човешкият мозък, ей така лесно може да достигне до някаква истина - просто прочетете някоя книга за статистика. Или някоя книга обясняваща феномените на квантовата физиката (пропоръчвам Паралелни светове на Мичио Како)
Истината се достика МНОГО МНОГО МНОГО трудно и с максимлано много помощ от машини, които не са хора, защото хората са машини, които са идиоти.
Защо знам че машините (калкулатори, компютри и пр.) не са идиоти, като хората.... ами защото съм наблюдавал компютрите доста отдавна 18-тина години и съм забелязвал, че продължават да си вършат работата. Освен, ако нещо, аз не съм прецакал програмата.
Впрочем този емпиричен съвет е и най-полезния когато става дума за хората - Хората също са машини, но за разлика от компютрите от хората не знаеш какво може да очакваш само гледайки опаковката и спецификациите на нея.
Та при хората общо взето гледай какво е правил дадения човек преди и до голяма степен можеш да очакваш да прави СЪЩОТО нещо и в бъдеще.
Хората се променят, но плавно, предвидливо и НЕ УМИШЛЕНО и със сигурност не от съвети - камо ли от моите съвети, в чиято гениалност съм сигурен.
Даже съм забелязал (а и Скот Адамс е забелязал и го пише в книгата), ако искаш да запазиш някакво знание, философия, информация, която би помогнала на всички В ТАЙНА погрижи се всички хора около теб да са я чували много пъти. Бъди сигурен, че никой няма да те послуша. А дори и ти вероятно няма да се послушаш, защото говорейки нон стоп за "гениалната истина", която си открил, е много вероятно ти да не я следваш, а само да говориш за нея. Така залъгваш мозъка си, че я следваш, докато всъщност ти следваш философията ДА ГОВОРИШ, а не да правиш.
Аз съм идиот, и тези около мене също са идиоти.
И вече оттам като тръгнем имаме няколко варианта:
1. Просто идиоти, които си знаят, че са идиоти (всеки човек, с достатъчно опит с хора (не опит с идеи и теории, а опит с хора от плът и кръв) в един момент ще достигне, то това заключение))
2. Наивни идиоти (т.нар - ПОЧТИ пълни идиоти)- хора, които з��аят, че са идиоти, но се надяват, че някои хора не са идиоти. И че като цяло е възможно да съществуват такива хора. Този тип хора са със софтуер идентичен със софтуера на децата. Лошото е, че тези хора оби��новено имат доста тежък сблъсък с реалността, но упоритостта им не може да им позволи да стигнат до вярното заключение, че НЯМА хора НЕидиоти. Ако господ, еталонът за рационалност е слезнал на земята, вселявайки се в тялото на някой, то това със сигурност това събитие, нито се се случило в България, нито вероятно в писаната история на човечеството.
Може би Октавиан наистина да е бил диктатор-господ, но и пак напомням - Операции без упойка!, тъй че колко пък господ да е бил.
3. Идиоти в делюзия (т.нар. - ПЪЛНИ идиоти) - тези идиоти са както най-опасните, ако придобият власт, така и най-тъжните, когато, както е в повечето случаи, НЯМАТ власт.
Това са хора от предишния тип, които обаче им е писнало да търсят НЕидиоти из другите хора и са стигнали до извода, че ДА, хората са идиоти, НО те самите не са идиоти. Това е опасно, защото други хора от 2-рия тип могат също да им повярват на тези "неидиоти", особено, ако "неидиотите" основно говорят и не правят абсолютно нищо и ето ти Хитлер, Сталин, Ленин, Мао и пр., избиват милиарди следвайки "рационалността"! :D
Днешни примери за такива "Неидиоти" са съвременните юъюб говорещи политически коментатори, които си мислят, че това, което правят е нещо сериозно.
Ако са комици, ако се забавляват, ако не се взимат на сериозно то те са си нормални идоти и може дори да са полезни. НО ако се взимат на сериозно, то те са МНОГО МНОГО големи идиоти.
Абе като цяло хора, които се взимат много на сериозно за нещо, и могат да говорят с часове за това нещо, как е много сериозно и краят на света започва с него най-вероятно наблюдавате пълен идиот. Замислете се, ако нещо беше наистина важно въпросния човек нямаше да говори за това колко важно е, а щеше да направи нещо по въпроса.
Ако един хирург по време да операция отреже някоя артерия и пациента започне да умира на масата, сигурен съм, че това което хирургът, ще направи, е без дума да каже, да намери срязаната артерия и да спре кървенето. А не да отвори канал в ютюб и да започне да разправя, как ако някой не направи нещо, този човек ще умре.
И така се диференциира между пълен идиот и просто идиот. Просто идиота може да е полезен, защото той си знае, че е идиот и ако се харесвате ще се опита да е по-малко идиот когато е с теб и когато вършите работа заедно. Докато пълния и полупълния идиот ще направят ТОЧНО обратното. Защото те поначало няма да те харесат, защото в техните очи ти си ИДИОТ, а те харесват само рационални хора. В случая на полупълният идиот - не харесват никого (освен евентуално върховният си лидер-неидиот, ако са го намерили), а тези които са пълни идиоти харесват само себе си.
Най-адекватното място според мен е да си е първото - да си знаеш, че си идиот, да знаеш, че всички останали хора също са идиоти и да се опиташ, без активно да им вредиш да си правиш каквото искаш, което да ти доставя удоволствие in the long term. Ако успееш да намериш идиоти с които по стечение на обстоятелствата харесвате подобни неща, може да си доставяте удоволствие и да правите каквото искате заедно - това ти обяснява приятелството, любовта, секса и защо е възможно група студенти да направят сайт, който да струва милиарди след 5 години. :)
Ако само ти беше идиот щях да кажа, че няма надежда...
Но понеже АБСОЛЮТНО ВСИЧКИ ХОРА сме идиоти, не само има надежда, но и тя е доста голяма, стига да знаеш истината - че хората сме идиоти!
Ако приемеш, че хората сме идиоти, тогава има ОГРОМНА НАДЕЖДА за теб. Надеждатане е че рационалността един ден, але па да е СКОРО, ще възтържествува.

Надеждата е, че ще имаш относително добър и хубав живот, ако четеш тези редове в Pax Romana или в 21-ви век в някоя западна страна, ДОРИ И В БЪЛГАРИЯ. Защото повечето от нещастията идват от грешни, нереалистични очаквания от света.
Ако приемеш, че хората (ти включително) сме идиоти, не само ще имаш ИЗКЛЮЧИТЕЛНО реалистични очаквания, но и полезни - ще можеш да планираш адекватно как да избегнеш нещастия причинени от хора идиоти. И най-хубавото на тази теория, философия и пр. е че няма нужда да губиш време в това да прецениш дали някой е идиот или не - защото всички са.
АКо ти трябва да разбереш дали един идиот ще ти свърши работата, която казва, че ще свърши просто вижда дали преди я е вършил така както е казвал. Ако да, най-вероятно ще ти я свърши, но никога не е сигурно. Ако не - със сигурност няма да ти я свърши! И ще си попупълен идиот, ако очакваш това от него..

3. Идиоти в делюзия (т.нар. - ПЪЛНИ идиоти) - тези идиоти са както най-опасните, ако придобият власт, така и най-тъжните, когато, както е в повечето случаи, НЯМАТ власт.
Това са хора от предишния тип, които обаче им е писнало да търсят НЕидиоти из другите хора и са стигнали до извода, че ДА, хората са идиоти, НО те самите не са идиоти. Това е опасно, защото други хора от 2-рия тип могат също да им повярват на тези "неидиоти", особено, ако "неидиотите" основно говорят и не правят абсолютно нищо и ето ти Хитлер, Сталин, Ленин, Мао и пр., избиват милиарди следвайки "рационалността"! :D
Днешни примери за такива "Неидиоти" са съвременните юъюб говорещи политически коментатори, които си мислят, че това, което правят е нещо сериозно.
Ако са комици, ако се забавляват, ако не се взимат на сериозно то те са си нормални идоти и може дори да са полезни. НО ако се взимат на сериозно, то те са МНОГО МНОГО големи идиоти.
Абе като цяло хора, които се взимат много на сериозно за нещо, и могат да говорят с часове за това нещо, как е много сериозно и краят на света започва с него най-вероятно наблюдавате пълен идиот. Замислете се, ако нещо беше наистина важно въпросния човек нямаше да говори за това колко важно е, а щеше да направи нещо по въпроса.
Ако един хирург по време да операция отреже някоя артерия и пациента започне да умира на масата, сигурен съм, че това което хирургът, ще направи, е без дума да каже, да намери срязаната артерия и да спре кървенето. А не да отвори канал в ютюб и да започне да разправя, как ако някой не направи нещо, този човек ще умре.
И така се диференциира между пълен идиот и просто идиот. Просто идиота може да е полезен, защото той си знае, че е идиот и ако се харесвате ще се опита да е по-малко идиот когато е с теб и когато вършите работа заедно. Докато пълния и полупълния идиот ще направят ТОЧНО обратното. Защото те поначало няма да те харесат, защото в техните очи ти си ИДИОТ, а те харесват само рационални хора. В случая на полупълният идиот - не харесват никого (освен евентуално върховният си лидер-неидиот, ако са го намерили), а тези които са пълни идиоти харесват само себе си.
Най-адекватното място според мен е да си е първото - да си знаеш, че си идиот, да знаеш, че всички останали хора също са идиоти и да се опиташ, без активно да им вредиш да си правиш каквото искаш, което да ти доставя удоволствие in the long term. Ако успееш да намериш идиоти с които по стечение на обстоятелствата харесвате подобни неща, може да си доставяте удоволствие и да правите каквото искате заедно - това ти обяснява приятелството, любовта, секса и защо е възможно група студенти да направят сайт, който да струва милиарди след 5 години. :)

Those readers familiar with Dilbert (the newspaper strip) would be familiar with Adams' acerbic but usually onpoint humour. Its only when he tries to move to long form, make it preachy that some of the fun is replaced with sighs.

If there ever is a methodology to gain weasel-hood during our lifetime, this hilarious read undisputedly would be it. Comical, rib tickling, humorous, and all at once elevated to the degree peculiarly possessed by the chamber of secrets. This read is an unsuspected guide to a day and a half of engrossed, heart warming read. It never disappoints its readers, especially the ones looking forward to a pleasant reading experience. A few unpleasant sections or rather unconventional comic strips presented in parts throughout the book, attract a sense of joyful and youthful exuberance among the book lovers. The true characteristic of the humour content presented by Scott Adams could be associated primarily with the professional world, prematurely elucidating the impact of it on the behavioral patterns of the fictional characters in a good way. Dilbert is a complete mind entertainer, when perceived seriously and sincerely in a light-hearted manner. The conceptualization of Weasels -their awkward, yet awe inspiring, out of the world humour depiction elevates the readers' sense of humour to a degree unknown, and unknown off the known. Such is the influence of this read on a cheerful mind that it gets us going for more of it. The plots on focus deliberately lay emphasis on the contradictions and conflicting events that are part and parcel of every corporate or professional decision making environment. The thought provoking elements in the book do no harm to the mindset of the weasels reading it; for, it renders them helpless in changing their own-self for bad. Given this point to acknowledge, the readers could, on more occasions than one during the read, experience a deja vu; as the cartoon strips never deviate from the professional backdrop or relax the satirical elements off it, causing mordant hallucinations in the brain - a result of released biological hormones, nevertheless. The author of this book, is however mindful of his ever expanding readers' base and in that, he keeps the humour content clean and inoffensive. The bottom line is that only weasels tend to feel annoyed by the matter printed in the book, which apparently is neither a give in, nor in any form conclusive in nature on the same.
The unhealthy hazards of being in a managerial role and the several elusive headaches that accompany this role rightly find a mention of them in the book. These moreover, are exclusively meant to describe the weasels and their higher hierarchical managers, who're no lesser weasels as per the author. The comical snippets are based on the activities associated mainly with the organizational and management levels of dependencies in the world of Business and Technology. To illustrate, the book includes topics such as maintaining head count - also technically yet informally called performing the balancing act, deriving and exuding confidence through motivation, avoiding work, entertaining ourselves at work (Pun intended), negotiating the various challenging circumstances that come our way with a demeanour no less than that known off a weasel and the fellow weasels, the sales and marketing elements who know no lesser that they're in more ways than one and almost always irksome and exasperating to the other earthlings and themselves, the weaselness in earthlings brought about by an ever loved but equally hated financial endeavours, the blues in the air very relevant and evident at an Airline premises or as experienced by the weaselly creatures who expect no less of weaselly behavior from the Airlines' staff, the social weasels who're never socially present, the CEO weasels who embark on a journey of Confidentially Executing Officials who never bat an eyelid at the sight of these earthlings, among others. Throughout the book the author shares personal stories and personal opinions. His opinions and stories will make you laugh and want to read more of the book. The book gives you many different tips on life and the life advice is very funny and interesting. The life advice pulled me deeper into the book and made me wanna try some of his tips and tricks in real life. The book informs us on how to outwit your boss,co-workers, and other people who might be a major part of your life.
I would definitely recommend this book to everyone. This was one of the funniest books I have ever read and will make people of all ages laugh. This book definitely will interest you and I believe everyone should read it. This was one of the best books I have ever read.

While I have read a few Dilbert books and enjoyed this one, I found this was particularly entertaining.
As a person who works in an office environment, so much of what Scott Adams captures is funny because it is either true, or so close to true that you can vision things in your mind while reading them.
I won't spoil anything, but I will say that even before I was finished reading this book, I went out and ordered four other ones.
I find these books appeal a lot to my very dry sense of humour, so I get them. Not everyone may or will.
I think that they are a great read and take us behind the comic strip part and learn so much more about the writer, which I enjoyed greatly.
Well worth the time spent reading and the book was very entertaining.

Lulletje rozenwater? Zeggen ze dat echt? Waar dan?
De hele vertaling heeft serieus op mijn zenuwen gewerkt. Kantoortuin. Lulletjes. Soms herken je de Engelse zin en denk je dat die zo veel beter was.... a weasel klinkt ook zo veel doortrapter dan een rat.... maar ze hadden enkel de Nederkandstalige versie in de bib. Die, niet gezeverd bij de sectie "managementboeken" stond.
The Dilbert Principle was stukken beter.
Hoe verder Scott Adams van het bedrijfsleven staat, hoe moeilijker het wordt om er de gevatte grappen over te maken.
Maar er blijven zalige stukjes instaan. Over six sigma bijvoorbeeld. Of het opkrikken van het moraal.... of posters... motiverende posters.... als je het meegemaakt heb weet je wat ik bedoel.

Typical Scott Adams scathing humour. Exposes all the things that one has done in the corporate world. If one were true one would admit to adopting the weasley ways one time or the other. Be it trying to minimize one's work to buttering one's way up the slippery corporate ladder to the next rung, or redirecting the blame on a coworker, or innocently letting the manager praise one for someone else's work.
This is one book where the author goes beyond office and into personal relationships too where the weasel ways sneak in and work 'wonders' to one's ego.

started this thinking only about the workplace weaselness. as it extended into real world weaselness that's where the book started getting further interesting. scott adams says weasels exist everywhere. without them, an ideal world that we all dream of, the economy would collapse. he has spoken out lot of stuff that people won't speak up in public just because it is politically incorrect. but it slaps right on face with the reality that we live in. it's one's own talent to see through the others to Navigate the life peacefully.

I read the previous Dilbert books not long after they appeared but never quite got around to this one. Picked my copy up in a book sale earlier this year as a "oh, I don't remember that one" purchase.
As the fifth in the series it seems more than a little derivative to me. I didn't get as much out of this as I did from the earlier books (The Dilbert Principle, The Joy of Work, etc.).
Perhaps they were of their time, or perhaps because I am twenty years older now than I was then I see them in a different light.

When you need a break from all the business management books that offer to "change your work attitude forever", turn to Dilbert for some comedy relief. I like the comic strip and can relate, but this book is a cynical and sarcastic look at the corporate world that rambles on more than it needs to.
And the fact that Scott Adams is a supporter of Donald Trump doesn't help him much either. I'm not buying any more of his books.

Dilbert always came out as world weary in Scott's comic strip but never bitter, cynical and downright depressing as in this book. Even if I put pessimism and misanthropy aside, this book is just not funny. It seems Scott decided that people cannot understand the strips on their own, so he goes about expanding and explaining the jokes, thereby killing the humor.

This should have been a 5-star book. Most of the book was amazing and made me literally laugh out loud at least once per page.
The smudge that I cannot overlook is the chapter "Weasels are from Venus," which set forth female stereotypes that got me riled up.
Considering snipping the Venus chapter from my copy of the book, so I can enjoy it 100% (just kidding! probably).

I have been reading Dilbert comics for as far as I can remember, at least for 15 years, and read this book which was published in pre-cell phone, pre-internet days in 2002 eventually in 2024. So, in itself, the book is good, but it didn't offer anything new and relevant to modern offices. I will strongly recommend this if you are new to Dilbert's way of thinking, though.
