Rate this book
A heartwarming cozy mystery series about losing everything, taking a chance, and starting again. After suffering a personal tragedy Abby Sullivan buys a huge old seaside mansion she has never even seen, packs up her life in San Francisco, and moves to Holiday Bay Maine, where she is adopted, quite against her will, by a huge Maine Coon Cat named Rufus, a drifter with her own tragic past named Georgia, and a giant dog with an inferiority complex named Ramos. What Abby thought she needed was alone time to heal. What she ended up with was, an inn she never knew she wanted, a cat she couldn't seem to convince to leave, and a new family she'd never be able to live without. In book 2 of the series, Abby finds a bundle of letters which had been written in 1954 in the wall of the library after Lonnie tears it down as part of the remodel. Intrigued by the secret revealed in the letters, Abby and Georgia set out to find the rest of the story. Meanwhile, Chief Colt Wilder uncovers a new clue relating to the death of a local girl the previous summer. In spite of her vow to focus her time on her writing, Abby finds herself pulled into the tangled web of half truths that may tell a different story than was first believed true. Join Abby, Georgia, Rufus, and Ramos, as they continue with the remodel on the old mansion, prepare for a busy summer season, and continue to find a new meaning for their lives in the charming small town of Holiday Bay.

Kathi lives with her husband, kids, grandkids, and dogs in beautiful Lake Tahoe. When she isn't writing, Kathi likes to read (preferably at the beach or by the fire), cook (preferably something with chocolate or cheese,) and garden (planting and planning not weeding). She also enjoys spending time on the water when she's not hiking, biking, or snowshoeing, the miles of desolate trails surrounding her home.
Kathi uses the mountain setting in which she lives, along with the animals (wild and domestic) that share her home, as inspiration for her cozy mysteries.

I did have problems with this book, but I am convinced of the talent of the author if she makes the read addictive, which Kathi Daley did. I liked this book enough and the set up for the future books was a touch of genius. You don't ever see a cliffhanger in a cozy mystery.

What I took away from the book in the beginning was a repetition of ideas. There was also a boring set up involving the expansion of both the renovation of Abby's mansion and the circle of friends of her. She is the main character. We are privy to a lot of her thoughts, despite the fact that her thoughts beam at us during Abby's interaction with her newly minted friends.

So far it was averaging 2 stars. It was difficult to keep interest in the book. But then something happened that blew my mind. Abby's tragic past has a key that leads to a criminal, making her husband's and her baby's deaths a murder. That grabbed my attention. This was never a lead in the first book. The author therefore lead me to the belief that Abby's past was there to contribute to the word count and also to make us bond with her.

But this book took that premise and ran away with it. Kathi Daley is an author whom I had never written off as boring, only that she so far had written well within the traditions of the cosy mystery genre. Now I can account for her fanbase and her prolificity. She works hard at playing with the confines of her genre and she got good at it pretty quickly.

I have given the book 3 stars and I don't think I either regret this or am doubtful of its implication. For me 3 stars means a decent book that I enjoyed. My 4 stars are reserved for truly great books. When I rate a book I don't compare it with my friends's scores. But it has to be said that 4 stars, which implies a great reading experience, is the de facto score of Å·±¦ÓéÀÖ. Many of my friends's 4 starred reviews don't have enough breathless gushing to level with the score. And that is the last time I'm involving others's reading habits in this review.

Back to the book, I appreciated the fact that the authoress granted me real, physical, mental, and almost carnal pleasure with the ease with which she held my attention. That is rare. I had written off the cosy genre as a backwater for me. But Daley's prose reeled me in mercilessly. And I'm thankful for that. I'm thankful for her books waking me up to the possibility that cosies are not yet done with me, nor I with them.

All the murders in the book occur in the past. There are no current and actual cases to be solved. There are no bricks that get thrown in with a note warning the main character to butt out or else! Do you know how many cosies do that? Hundreds. So this book piqued my expectations. This also means that there is a mouthwatering cliffhanger at the end of the book, instead of the main character putting her life on the line for the nth time. That might come later, but if that cliche comes, I won't have any problems with it, because the author has changed the game of the series.

I am in awe of this author. I intend to write cosies and Fantasies in the future. I have a taste and an experience regarding how difficult it is to write a decent book. Daley is very prolific by all, final standards. She is a special talent. If I can learn from her so much the better. But this review is not going to be about my dreams as a writer so let's move on.

For this story to work, it needed to tone down the colours of the setting. A winter season, punctuated by cups of coffee, always offered and always accepted, is the perfect setting for establishing the tone of the book. Part of the reason why this book is a trendsetter and a success is the ease of which the narration unfolds the plot. Though nothing extraordinary happens, the author makes you care. She makes you curious, impatient to know next, even if that next is another bleeding fundraiser.

Finally I would like to thank Daley for writing in an unambitious, coherent, endearing, and personal way. We do get the type of details that must have been checked for veracity, but the book rests on the writing prowess of the author. She made me want to read the following book in the series. Suddenly I am keen to read most of her other series. Except for those series that have the least traditional and too cutesy covers that is. So though I thought I had seen everything in the genre, Daley comes along and pricked my interest. And now, I will keep an eye on her very long bibliography. She is not yet half done, which is a scary thought :)

In this second book of the series Abby is settling into her new life in Holiday Bay and the construction on her recently purchased Inn is coming along. During the construction a bundle of letters is found in a wall and after reading them her roommate Georgia wants to see if she can locate anyone connected to them. Meanwhile Chief Colt is beginning to believe that a you g woman's death the previous summer wasn't an accident but murder. He asks Abby if she would like to help him look into the death and what seemed simple at first becomes mired in an ever twisting mystery. Can Abby and the Chief dog through the never ending clues and come out with the one piece that solves the puzzle or will it remain a mystery? Tag along as they work their way through each piece and find out if Georgia figures out who those letters belong to. This was a lovely read that wasn't just a mystery but an emotional journey into the lives of its characters. I look forward to seeing where their future takes them.

Surprised I didn't like this one much as I adored the first one. The dialogue in this one was an issue for me.....it seemed too forced, too convenient. Some of the characters even sounded the same so it was hard to gauge their individual personalities. I still love the setting and see potential so I'll continue with the series.

This was a enjoyable afternoon read for me. The setting is beautiful and the characters all seem to genuine and likable. The mystery was engaging and I liked how well Georgia, Abby and Colt all worked together to solve not one but two mysteries. This is the second book in the series and I did feel a little confused by several references to the previous mystery in the first book. I will definitely be going back to pick up the first book so I can understand the background of the characters.

Kathi Daley’s The Inn at Holiday Bay: Letters in the Library (Holiday Bay #2) continues Abby Sullivan’s ‘new life, her second chance at life, after losing the two most important people in her life. Abby buys and begins to remodel an old mansion in Maine which she is planning to open as an inn. As the remodeling begins in the old library, some letters, written in 1954, are discovered. These letters start the first storyline. A bit later in this book, another storyline begins which ‘is attached to Abby’s husband, Ben, who was a homicide detective. Abby wonders “How is this possible?. Both storylines are connected to Holiday Bay, but I had difficulty comprehending how and if the two stories are connected to one another. As a result I felt one story ‘took away from the other. The book felt disconnected, and so did I. As this is a series, maybe things will be tied together or not. 3.25 stars.

Review:

The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and no matter what setting she creates, it is a warm and inviting place. The characters are well developed and well rounded, and they are people that I would like to visit.

The author is also very talented in creating multiple storylines in her books and then weaving them together perfectly, which she did in this book. The mysteries are captivating and there are enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing throughout the book. The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. You cannot go wrong picking up a book to read by this author.

Totally enjoyed this book. A bundle of letters is found during renovations that catches the interest of Abby and Georgia to see if they can find out more. Chief Wilder finds a clue to a case a year old, which opens up a whole series of even more questions, some that tie to Abby's past. I love how Ms. Daley ties a side story into the mystery, so the book never slows down. I also love that the mystery doesn't have to include a recent dead body, I love the cold case feel to it. I will definitely continue on with this series.

Abby Sullivan, her cat Rufus, her new friend Georgia Carter, and Georgia’s dog Ramos enjoy living in Abby’s cottage while the main house is being renovated to become an inn with 6 suites. Although there have been multiple property owners, only the original owners ran it as a resort until 1954. As with all renovations, but particularly with an older property, unexpected needs arise in electrical or plumbing. But imagine the surprise of finding letters postmarked in 1948 in one of the library walls that required opening because of a plumbing update for the water line. What will these letters reveal?

I love the discovery and intrigue of old letters, the mystery of the period, the sender, and the receiver. In conversation with Georgia, Abby has raised an important consideration.
"I suppose that just because the envelopes were postmarked in 1948, that doesn’t mean the letters inside them were written then."
It is only one of the glimpses into the past as a hiking invitation will be Abby’s 1st experience on snowshoes. It will bring surprises beyond the gorgeous view of the waterfall’s destination.

Another pleasure in reading this cozy mystery is the seamless weave of multiple threads flowing through the storyline. As in real life, there are always various things going on in a person’s life, and this cozy is a reflective mirror of the juggling and balancing act of priorities, commitments, and deadlines.

The Inn at Holiday Bay: Letters in the Library is the second book in this series by Kathi Daley. Ms. Daley seamlessly connected the first book in this series to the second. Abby has decided to resume her career as an author while continuing the renovations on the conversion of her house to a B&B. In the process a parcel of old love letters was found in the library. Those letters led to numerous questions and mysteries. Who wrote the letters? When were they written? Who became pregnant? What happened to the baby? Is anyone still living who may have the answers to the questions that these letters brought to mind? How do all of the random pieces fit together? Throughout the book more questions arise leading Abby to assist Colt in solving a cold case that was initially ruled an accident. Information revealed has Abby delving into her deceased husband's past to find answers. This book has more emotional depth than many cozy mysteries giving it a real feel type of character development. There are multiple storylines which fit together well. Some have answers, others do not. Readers who appreciate complex mysteries will enjoy the book. Readers who prefer a single mystery may be disappointed. The book concludes with a number of additional characters who are likely to have significant roles, multiple avenues to expand the series and opportunities to delve further into the history of the house and community. I’m looking forward to next book in this series!!! There is a cliffhanger, yet I am excited to see how everything resolves. This is a great whodunit with a hint of what is to come. Lots of emotion, suspense, and a budding romance. Can't wait.

Yawn

Intriguing town and sweet characters. Such a slow and calming pace with very formal dialogue leads me to wanting a nap instead of the next chapter. There's a lot of repetition of the main plot and the book just ended. Period. I thought surely there would be more of a closing, maybe bring something emotional or exciting into the story but no. You can definitely count on a visit to Holiday Bay for R and R.

Letters in the Library is the second book in Kathi Daley’s The Inn at Holiday Bay series. The writing style flows smoothly, and the book is a clean and easy read. The mystery is well-plotted and complex, with lots of twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and guessing. The setting is charming, and the well-developed characters are affable, compassionate, and caring. I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy well-crafted cozy mysteries.

Abby Sullivan’s life changed forever because a distracted driver swerved into oncoming traffic, and her husband and their infant son didn’t survive the resulting accident. After receiving an email advertising a huge old house for sale in Holiday Bay, Maine, she purchased the house without even seeing it in person, packed up her belongings, and left San Francisco. Starting over isn’t easy and she still mourns the death of her family, but Abby, a published author, is finally writing again, settling in and making friends, and plans to open an inn offering theme weekends, wine tastings, destination weddings, special events, and outdoor concerts on the bluff once major renovations are completed. Georgia Carter, who’s a genius in the kitchen, and her large dog, Ramos, are living with Abby and Rufus, a large orange cat who adopted her, in an adorable cottage located on her property, and Georgia will be managing the inn once it’s open. Lucas Fitzgerald, the owner of Fitzgerald Plumbing, gives Georgia had a stack of envelopes he found in the wall of the library while replacing the water line. They were old letters I haven’t with postmarks from 1948 written by a named Victor to a woman named Ursula, and both Abby and Georgia are intrigued by a secret revealed in the letters and learn more. Abby had previously found boxes in the basement of the main house that contained possessions and photos of teenage girls, one of which was Karen Stinson, whose body was found in the river at the bottom of the falls the previous summer. Everyone assumed she’d been hiking, slipped and fell, but when Police Chief Colt Wilder discovered new information, he asked a friend to review the autopsy results. He believes foul play may have been involved and while he isn’t ready to reopen the case, he wants to do some unofficial digging. Abby and Colt look into cold cases and share information, and together they sort through the clues and brainstorm about possible scenarios.

This is a good second book to this series, but there is a cliffhanger. I don’t do cliffhangers very well and usually avoid books when I know they have one. Old secrets kept

When Abby's life was turned upside down by a distracted driver, she choses new life far away from her current one. She made new friends, one of which is the Police Chief, who she helped solve a murder. Now they are tackling another case, when they find ties to her previous life. Great plot, with several interesting storylines woven in. This is shaping up to be another hit series.

Mysteries from the past.

Abby and Georgia are given a bunch of old letters found during the inns renovations. Determined to figure out who the letter writers were send them all over town to talk to residents who would have been old enough to remember the couple. Helping Colt solve a cold case that was initially ruled an accident has Abby delving into her husband's past to find answers. This is a great storyline, and the characters are developing with each new book. I hate the cold, but her descriptions make me want to visit Holiday Bay.

Wow! That was awesome and a great read and I can't wait for book two. I love to read and get lost in books, because to me it's better than television. I just don't like the steamy sex parts, because it takes away the good parts of the book.

“Letters in the Library earns 5/5 Mysteries…Engaging with a Capital “E!

Moving cross country was not without its opposition, including legal, from her sister Annie, and despite keeping in email contact, her sister has not responded. Until now a short, but encouraging text on the her late husband’s birthday. Abby learns Velma has her own estranged sister story and decides reuniting sisters might be a great project since her writing has hit the proverbial “wall. But letters, of a romantic nature and postmarked 1948, are found tucked behind the bookshelves. There are so many romantic links to the old house sparking Abby’s and Georgia’s curiosity. And chief of police/friend Colt Wilder’s interest into the death of Karen Stinson has renewed since revisiting evidence puts into question the original verdict of “accidental, and when one of Karen’s friends finds a box of mementos, coincidences become downright spooky! Abby just wanted the quite life running her B&B, but it seems “Holiday Bay might need renaming…“Mystery Bay?

Brilliant! So much to unpack in this second book in Kathi Daley’s The Inn at Holiday Bay series, and although it isn't necessary for newbies to have read the first book Boxes in the Basement, it makes for a complete experience reading how everyone was introduced. Once again Kathi has penned a page-turner with a handful of mysteries to interest any inner Sherlock including revisiting the tragic events that brought Abby to Maine. Her well-written, well-paced story is an engaging first-person narrative sharing Abby’s inner thoughts, fears, and feelings along with some vivid descriptions. She wove seemingly unrelated events into a “Wow! of a read. Abby has found her inner strength opening up her heart to build close relationships, but her emotions are challenged when the death of her husband and son are linked to a cold case. Clever. Excellent. Engaging. Be prepared…although Kathi provides closure to some of the mysteries, others will continue into the next book, “Messages in the Mantle, due out in April. Along with an sneak peek into “The Hathaway Sisters: Harper, first book in her newest series Family Ties Mystery set to release on February 26, Kathi provides an easy-to-follow recipe for Apple Pie Biscuits. Sounds like something Georgia would bake.

At one point in this book it refers to Abby's late husband working on cold cases as one might the challenging Sunday Crossword Puzzle. I think author Kathi Daley must have a similar mind. When there is a mystery to be solved, she can not make it run start to finish. There are always intersections and connections and possibly unintentional coincidences that make detours a must. That is part of the reason I love her books and always look forward to the next one.
She adds to our pleasure in this deep and twisty path with more mysteries than expected, new friendships and old family difficulties. There are romantic undertones, but it is the complicated yet intriguing mysteries that draw readers in. I also enjoy watching the renovations in progress as Abby and Georgia give new life to the old mansion and turn it back into an Inn. There are secrets between those walls yet to be discovered.
Each book in this series allows us to become more attached to the main characters and introduces us to new ones. I enjoy the layers being peeled back. When truth is revealed it is not always what you expect.

Abby finds herself with writing once again as the house goes under further renovations. Old love letters are found in the library which uncovers a secret pregnancy as she finds herself searching for the identity of the baby who might still be alive.

The local chief is looking into a case from previous summer of a woman who was hiking and fell to her death. It seems to be an accident but was she pushed to her death? Things get interesting when it is found out that her half brother was killed months beforehand.

But even better Abby’s husband was once college roommates and best friend with the brother and he died months before them. Coincidence or is there a tie between them? They spent one summer together, did they do something they should not have or seen something that would get them killed?
The reads will find themselves drawn into the many sub plots.

The restoration of the huge house that Abby bought is going well. When taking out a wall in the library, Lonny finds a bunch of old letters that reveal a mystery so Abby and Georgia set out to solve it. In addition, it seems that Abby's husband had been onto a mystery of an unsolved homicide revolving around an old friend. That friend was himself murdered as was his sister so Abby and Colt are trying to solve those. Abby and Georgia along with their pets Rufus and Ramos are doing great in their adopted town of Holiday Bay which shows itself as a wonderful town that provides a second chance.

The second book in Kathi's new series is a fabulous read which leaves me eager for the next book to come out.

Loved the book!
Abby Sullivan, a writer, is doing her best to rebuild her life after a terrible tragedy. So she moves to a small seaside community. Which she feels will give her a complete change of scene.
She has bought a large mansion sight unseen, to create a new start.
She meets a wonderful cast of characters. A huge Coon cat who invites himself into the new house, a girl named Georgia who is struggling with a tragedy herself, and lots of new friends she didn't know she needed.
Meanwhile, she has a mystery to solve...a girl is found in the local woods dead.
There are some curious, mysterious boxes stored in the basement which is another mystery.
Fast moving, clever and fun!

The Inn at Holiday Bay : Letters in The Library
By: Kathi Daley
Letters in The Library is book two in The Inn at Holiday Bay Series. This series is a little different from some of the author’s other cozy mysteries, but I love it. A clean cozy mystery that will have you turning the pages to see what is going to happen next. Abby is still having her old home she bought remodeled. During the remodel there is some old letters that is found in the library. This is just one of the mysteries to be solved in this story. Will they find answers to the letters and the other mysteries? There are twist and turns that will keep you guessing throughout the story.
