Unfortunately, not all people from magical bloodlines have powers, and at 22, I’m several years past the age they usually appear. So I’ve resigned myself to a boring, magic-less life.
Then something strange happens
I get stuck in the middle of a bar fight, and instead of just punching the guy back, I blow a hole in the wall.
So I guess I do have powers. But they’re unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. This shit is definitely not normal.
And it seems the magical authorities agree, because they give me a choice: either I go to school to learn to control my crazy new magic, or they’ll take it away. Permanently.
Now if I can just survive the bitchy mean girls determined to take me down a peg, the mysterious attacks on students, the three hot-as-hell guys who don’t seem turned off by my prickly exterior, and the professor who makes me long for detention, maybe I’ll get out of here in one piece.
Wouldn’t bet on it though.
Welcome to the Academy of Unpredictable Magic.
Spark is the first book in the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series, a medium-burn reverse harem story intended for ages 18+, featuring a badass chick and the four sexy men who fall in love with her.
Well, drats. I really wanted to like this book, but it took me a week to read due to a serious case of falling asleep on it because of too damn much telling and not enough showing.
There was a lot of fast-forwarding and summarization of events in Spark. Entire weeks, or at one point even five weeks, were just skipped for no apparent reason (other than moving the time forward?), and only a few 'action' scenes or sexy times with the guys were shown and not told through narration. The book also lacked dialogue due to this very reason. And personally, I enjoy reading books with rich dialogue, because I feel that the back and forth communication between characters is what makes the story interesting and also makes us readers feel the bonds growing. In the case of this book, the relationships between Elliot (the FMC) and her guys seemed to be forced upon us through narration or somewhat crappy banter.
Even the character-building fell under the tell-spell, in that we were basically told that Cam is the fun one, Asher is the calm/caring one, and Dimitri is the grumpy one. And well, Roman could have been another cut-and-paste type, too. (But he's too spoilery to get into, so I'll leave him at that.) Oh, and Elliot, according to her own narration, is the prickly, sarcastic, emotionless one. And so, especially with the men, it was somewhat tough to connect to their personalities and characters when they were only told about during much of the book, and only truly shown in a few scenes with actual dialogue.
The worst forced-bond relationship was with Elliot and her only classmate-friend, Raul. They 'spoke' only about once or twice before we were, again, told that they are now the bestest of buddies. Aaaand then finally (hidden for spoilers)
Here are some notes that I wrote whilst reading the book. And also, perhaps these might be things to develop in the following books in the series.
1) The banter doesn't flow. Elliot says something supposedly funny and everyone laughs. Her one-liners are mostly prickly and not witty. There's even a 'your mom' -joke, which, coming from a 22-year-old woman, seems rather childish. Some warmth or more back and forth could be added to the banter.
2) The paragraphs and chapters need to be divided more thoughtfully. The story fast-forwards from one paragraph to the next (we're thrown weeks ahead) with zero warning, and yet there might only be seconds between one chapter and the next. This leaves the reader rather bewildered and confused. Also, the fast-forwarding interrupts a potentially juicy storyline/scene. It's ok to skip through boring weeks, but not when things have literally just started (the first big skip is during her actual first lesson at the academy - which sadly fast-forwards through a very interesting meeting between Elliot and Roman).
3) The magic and the braces seem confusing to me. What type of magic is this unpredictable magic that they all have? Is there a limitless number of the types of magic you can have within this unpredictableness? It feels like the characters have the powers that they have just because it fits the story, not because there's any backstory or reason for it all? Also, do the braces work or not? I thought they were supposed to block all magic, yet they don't.
4) The whole plot or true meaning behind this book is a tad lost to me. Is it about the academy and magic, or about Elliot's personal struggles, or about the romance, or the mystery mayhem, or about the magical world being against the Unpredictables, ooooor is it even about the mean girls? And obviously it can be about all of it, but I kept trying to figure out what major event is the main focus of the book.
5) The writing is not actually half bad, apart from the banter, but things just don't flow naturally from scene to scene.
6) This is such a minor thing, but.. Why make a big deal about giving the leading lady a guy's name, aka Elliot, but then make all of the characters come up with nicknames for her. And some even call her by female versions of 'Elliot' (i.e., Ellie or Elle). People with 'odd' names have to deal with comments from people - such is life. No need to hop on a soapbox about it. (And it doesn't really make the character likeable.)
I'm not sure if I'll give the second book in this series a go. I rarely put up with books that I keep putting down. But I would like to see if my prediction comes through (the thing inside my spoiler).
I really enjoyed it but Spark was anything but unpredictable.
Spark was underdeveloped, from the messy time line to the lack of secondary characters. The story called for something more detailed, deeper and less rushed. The pace was far too fast and the plot far too convenient.
Luckily, Elliot was a likeable main character, Roman a good partner and I really liked their first encounter. Elliot shone as an independent power woman immediately, and god knows how much it is needed in the genre. I am not so sure about the rest of her harem yet and how it will work out with them, but I will just have to see. I am quite excited for the next book.
This is a fabulous start to this series, the characters have been wonderfully developed and the world building and romance have been beautifully interwoven with a suspense tale that concluded in a way that I happily didn't see coming. Great story, great narration and great conclusion. Bring on the next book in this exciting series.
I've read some of the reviews for this book and where I can agree with a few of them I still like the book. I get that we had to have the introductions and build-up of other characters, blah, blah, blah... It still started a bit to slow but whatever.
I guess my biggest beef with this heroine is the way the author portrayed her as a bad-ass but in all actuality, she's just a punk and a coward that's scared of getting hurt. And while I get that sentiment it still pisses me off that she portrayed that way.
I really hate it when an author contradicts the personality of the character. And oh God, we had to sit through all the inter monolog about her confusing feeling and being scare to love over and over and over again. Not only was the heroine a coward she was also a whiner ugh it just really got on my nerves but not so much that I won't read the second book of this series. Damn does that mean I'm a glutton for punishment? hmmmmm
With the luck I've had this week with books I was honestly expecting the worst. Fortunately, this went well. I liked that it wasn't the typical RH with everyone gushing over the heroine's smile. In this book the heroine was the proactive one when it came to sex and I liked that.
I will definitely be checking out the other books.
I saw a 5 star review, and a rec on a forum I follow. I am so unimpressed with the reviewer who raved about it - assuring that it was very adult RH. Now I wonder if there was an arc for a freebie ? I can't understand how it gets 5 stars for high school dramatics with adults as the stars of a boring story. Juvenile characters, bullying (so high school but yet Adults!) and all too Predictable plot with nothing new or exciting, not at all suited to adult audience, unless that is your preferred genre. I struggled to finish as I dislike YA or teenage books.
This was pretty good and I did find it interesting but a lot of scenes weren't very fleshed out and it made the story feel too fast. I may come back to the series to catch up with the characters but for now it's on hold
On the fence about this one. I almost stopped at several points I'm going to try and sum up what bugged me going to put it under a spoiler tag in case so I can rant.
I will check out the next one though I think I could give this one a 3.5
Unfortunately, I was bored. Somehow, this book has too much and not enough detail. I felt overloaded with useless information while the parts I cared about seemed glossed over.
I really like the idea of unpredictable magic, it is so varied and interesting. Eliot is a very feisty and independent main character. She is a brilliant older sister. I do get her insecurity issues, but she really needs to let go and trust in others. I guess that will be part of her character arc during the series. I enjoyed the mystery plot of the book as well. As for the guys, I like them all and don't have a clear favourite yet.
For a book about magic there was very little about magic. It was more background story. It went from "hey, I have magic" to "I've been working on my magic for a few weeks." There was no discovering how to work with it and control it, it was just there and then she had worked with it and now it's here.
Speaking of no development...the relationships between the main character and her guys was told in paragraph blurbs. Weeks pass and this guy has done this and that one did that. No special moments that progress their relationship.
I read most of the book (just could not finish it) and have no real details of how anything got to where it was when I ended.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
this was a fun start to this series! it definitely built a world, plot, and relationships that can be interestingly built on in the books to come. i had a fun time with all these characters and was excited at the inclusion of a mystery element.
i really like elliot. i thought she was super cool and super witty. her past makes her current way of thinking about interpersonal relationships understandable and is a great starting place for future growth. also i loooove her relationship with maddy. my favourite thing about her though, is that she’s very rational and self aware. like just as i’m about to be annoyed by something she’s thinking, she’ll immediately turn around and fairly give the other perspective of it and i’ll be like ‘okay phew yeah. i just appreciated how she would fully flesh out her thoughts and give credit to both ways you could think about something.
now. these men. THESE MEN. from their descriptions to their actions i was in love (well a little less with dmitri, but that’s only because i’m not really as into the broody type). there is someone here for everyone’s taste, and miss elliot did really hit the motherload with this foursome. they’re all so respectful, supportive, and protective of her and her relationships with each of them are very fun to follow. my favourite one is ABSOLUTELY asher, and that’s because i’m obsessed with pretty green-eyed, brunette boys who are extremely emotionally intelligent and genuinely sweet and kind and endearing. also he has the best powers ever, those being mind reading and MIND CONTROL?? like are you kidding??? he wins!!! asher prince supremacy y’all
these are eventually gonna be some fun orgy scenes i’ll tell you that much 😁
also roman is a sexy name hehehe
i think the way they kinda ended the ongoing plot on a bit of a mysterious cliffhanger is super intriguing and makes me so excited to know more about what’s going on
(and also seriously, considering how different these men are, i’m extremely excited to see how all those personalities converge in an orgy setting. that is going to be such an interesting and fun dynamic and i am SO ready for it LMAO 🤪)
overall i really liked this opening to this series! it was a good pace that really kept me in it. it was difficult to stop reading a lot of the time. superrr excited to see where this goes from here!
Hated the main character so much, she was so annoying.
There was barely any chemistry between her and any of the guys, like really, none. There was sexual tension between her and one of the men but that was it. All the guys liked her and wanted to date her but for the life of me I don't know why. She has almost no redeeming qualities apart from her love for her sister. She's brash and rude and the writer tried to make it out as if she was sassy but no, she was just rude and very angry. I hate the strong woman trope that's actually the mean, bitter woman trope. A woman doesn't have to be surly and rude and incredibly short and sarcastic to be viewed as strong and independent. You can be nice and warm and still stand up for yourself. Of course they gave her a tragic background to piggy back her bad attitude on but I wasn't buying it, it didn't feel genuine to me. Her mom died and her dad left and she blamed everyone around her? Nah sis.
The plot could have redeemed the story if anything actually happened. We barely see any of the cool magic in action, and when we do it's not well described so it's a little underwhelming.
All in all, I would not recommend this book for people who find the 'strong' ( rude) woman trope annoying. Who hate telling not showing cause that's definitely what's happening here and who can't stand being told that characters like each other but don't have an ounce of chemistry.
Really this is more of a 2.5 read for me... It was an ok, fast read. Easy to sink into the world but I for some reason just really couldn't connect with the FMC. She just seemed kinda on the dull side for someone who seems to be such a bad A. Shes very almost introverted, and really hard to get to know for a reader. Like an onion.. all these layers.. or something. Either way, by the end of the book I had gotten to know most of the guys enough to click with them even the asshole one but I just couldn't understand/see whatever the "spark" was in the FMC the other guys saw. (pun intended lol)
All in all the story itself was good, it had intrigue and this mystery going on that isn't yet solved, but the romance of it was just really kind of nonexistent to me. And the RH aspect wasn't as clearly defined as I would have liked. I mean there are rules or I should say guild lines even RH usually follow that just wasn't as clearly defined in this book to make the hole poly-amorous relationship thing fly.
DNF 42% I just couldn’t finish it. Maybe I’m too old for academy books 😅this book just could not keep my interest. There was sooooo much personal/inner dialogue without any real interactions or action scenes and I’m already 40% through the book! It was so damn boring. All just in her head. What’s she’s doing, what classes she’ll expect to have, rumors she’s hearing about herself. Weeks are skipped just to move the timeline yet I don’t know these characters AT ALL. All I really know is there’s a mean girl click, she has the hots for 4 guys even though she rarely seems to interact with them yet they are letting her move in with them. No character development, no plot except yay she finally has magic 🙄and no action scenes lead to a very, VERY boring read.
Murder mystery in aisle 1. Fast paced, easy to get into and finally a mature school MC (well kinda). A little predictable but fun.
Four guys, a little kiss here and there and a bit of sex. But mainly focused on the magic and not romance. Not really insta-love more friends to lovers minus one. I liked all four guys, favourite is a toss up between Asher and Dima. Although I want to see a Dima/Roman sandwich.
Ellie is a little prickly and standoffish with a good heart and is kick ass. A little mean girl bullying. Sorta reminds me of Three witches and a margarita. Looking forward to reading the next one.
*WARNING* contains adult situations I guess this was okay. There was really no world building at all, Elliot tells how "beautiful" the school is, but the author does do much to describe it. The heroine swings from acting her age of 22 to acting like a 12 year old. The two sex scenes are not only described poorly, but it's got the heroine against wall. The characters were not relatable or likeable for me. This is just not the book for me.
it was like 1.75 but i did finish it sooo 2 then. The climax was very flat. I had expectations for this because i saw how much it's recommended, but hey different preferences i guess 🤷♀
I love a good RH and this one was a great start to what seems will be an amazing series! I fell in love with these guys and Elliot is one bad chick! I cannot wait to read more in this series and learn more about these characters! Absolutely worth more than 5 sinful stars!
Spark begins when Elliot figures out she has magic one night, now she's being sent to a school for Unpredictables, that sounds cool, right? Well, not exactly. She's a young twenty something in college, and their are girls there that act extremely immature, but I loved how Elliot handled them and even told them they were immature, that was great. I also loved how she became friends with the guys as well. This book was really good, and I enjoyed the plot. I can't wait for more.
Spark by Sadie Moss is a paranormal academy reverse harem that I listened to on audio narrated by Sarah Puckett. This is the first book in the Academy of Unpredictable Magic series.
This is the third series of Sadie's that I have read and it definitely won't be my last. She does an amazing job pulling me into the story. I was hooked from the very beginning and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next I am loving the relationship that is blooming between Elliot, Cam, Asher, Dimitri, and Roman.
I can't wait to dive into the next book in the series Trials so I can get more of their story.
Sarah did an amazing job on the narration! She never disappoints. I love that she uses different voices/tones for each character. It really brings the story to life.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves paranormal romances, academy romances, or reverse harems.
This was a pretty good read. I could have done without some of the petty mean girl bullsh*t, but I’m not gonna lie that no matter the age some people never grow up. Not a fan of how much time is condensed with her getting to know the guys and us not being witness to that. Some steamy scenes but all have been with her professor, not that I’m complaining. Hopefully we get to see her bond with the other 3 guys more considering she’s not actually ready for a relationship, guess that puts them all in the friends with benefits category for now. Can’t wait to see how everyone ends up mastering their unpredictable magic, some of them are superhero type stuff!
