A Route of Wares

Wizards, Ninjas, Vamps, Wares. For reality TV ratings, one Ranger may have to spill their blood.

Nash has always had an eye out for the little guy, just never with the genetically-engineered power he now wields as a Ranger. When he immigrates to Hollow Island, where his every move is broadcast to the masses, he witnesses shocking brutality both on and off the camera. And in this made-for-TV fantasy world, a peace-making character doesn’t boost ratings.

Livi, a reclusive Vamp, chose violence and money over peace long ago. She vows to use every tool in her arsenal to lure enemies to their deaths as she rages against the memory of her sister’s senseless death. But regardless of her advanced modifications, her reckless attitude could lead to getting dusted

Can Nash break the island’s cycle of slaughter and save Livi or will they both be dead before the next commercial?

A Route of Wares is the first book in the rapid-release Hollow Island urban fantasy series. If you like unique worlds, snarky humor, and vivid magical creations, then you’ll love Daniel Coleman’s action-packed novel.

I'll just come out and say it. It's weird. Even for me who likes the fantasy world of vampires and werewolves, etc. I did enjoy the play on names, but it was also a bit hard to follow. I didn't really connect with the characters. There was blood, I mean come on there is a vampire but I thought it took it a bit far on the description to gory on that. I was a bit miffed that she didn't show up till 80% of the book was over. Obviously that was to get me pulled in to the next book, but I'm just not invested and I'm not sure why? It had an interesting setup, where people come to this island to "save" people, oh and it's broadcast like a reality t.v. show. Like I said it's got an interesting premise and storyline ish, but it couldn't hold me. Which is weird because I like fantasyish books.

Tough beginning but, worth the effort to finish

The author was very slow building a premise for his characters and I almost gave up a few times. Thankfully, I'm stubborn and kept reading. I actually began enjoying the build-up halfway through the book and now need to read the next in the series.

A fantasy TV reality show based on Hollow Island that is broadcast to the masses. In this futuristic time, people can immigrate to this island and live what they think will be their dream life. Some are genetically enhanced, others are normal and others are selected to be Rangers a sort of police officer and bounty hunter. Viewers watch their favourite characters and reward them with viewing numbers or bounties collected.

Nash and his sister grew up in care and had a hard life. His sister immigrated a year ago and he has seen no sign of her on the show, so he has followed and wants to find her. He was lucky enough to be picked as a Ranger and after some basic training, has arrived on the island and is paired with a more experienced Ranger for two weeks of training on the job. Only problem is, the guy he is paired with is a bit of an ass and doesn’t have the same sort of morals that Nash does. Most of the Rangers are in love with power and choose money and violence to those less fortunate than them as their idea of work or fun.

All the Rangers have a secret enhancement, his mentors is a super-fast gun draw and Nash has super healing powers. Examples of the other modified creatures, are vampires, wizards and other strange shifters, such as a snake man. Nash is soon disillusioned and being set apart from his Ranger colleagues. How long he will survive on the island, with no money and no-one to train him or back him up, is up for grabs. Will he even be able to have any sort of effect on the cycle of violence and corruption that seems to run the island?

The book shows the reader a variety of different scenarios that he gets into and how he ends up losing everything he started out with and his possible teaming up with a Vamp. Interesting and at times, amusing storyline. Some of the words used are unusual and make you wonder how the author came up with them they are certainly very unique! But in a good way. There is obviously more to come in this series, as Nash has only just started out on his journey on the island. Some of the chapters seem a little confusing, but will no doubt make more sense once there is more background on the island, the enhancements, what the TV ratings and bounties are regulated by, and how people manage to immigrate there.

Not quite what I expected, but once you get a bit further into the book, you get to find out about a few of the characters and you get to find out more about what happens on the island. It seems those without, are not held in high regard, nor protected by the Rangers, whilst those who may be a threat, are allowed to steal and not be stopped. Hopefully the backstory might get a bit more attention in the next book and more details about Nash’s sister and how she managed to immigrate. What the actual process is and who gets selected and why. I look forward to reading some more about the goings on, on Hollow Island. I received an ARC copy of this book from Hidden Gems and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Whoa!

This is a fast-paced, extremely engaging story. I am very curious about Nash and the progress he makes toward his ambitious goals. The world Mr. Coleman has built is rich with details and intriguing in its concept. There was a little more violence than I generally like, but I will definitely buy the next installments. I'd recommend this for older teens and adults.

I received this book for free in return for an honest review.

A ranger in post-apocalyptic Puerto Rico tries to do the right thing and gets beaten at every turn while cameras live feed the happenings to the outside world. Honestly my only complaint is that just as the story really started forming the book ended. I wish it had been longer!

I wasn’t sure when I started reading if I would like this book, but I quickly got into the adventure and ended up really enjoying it! I would really like to find out what happens with Nash and Livi!
