Empire of Lies #1

King of Lies

Rate this book
The man I fell in love with is a f*cking liar...
I don't have much time to reveal all the details, but I will say this: The "Woman disappears after wedding" and "Woman flees before honeymoon" headlines are lying.
I'm not missing.
I didn't run away after my wedding.
I would've never run away right before our scheduled honeymoon.
My husband has taken me.
No, correction: He's kidnapped me because he claims that "it's what's best". That I'm a mere pawn in his twisted game of chess.
Despite the fact that my heart is still tethered to his, or the fact that he's still the most gorgeous and beautiful man I've ever met in my life (he can still make me wet with a single sentence), I have to focus on getting away from him.
I have to accept that he's no longer the man I fell in love with.
He's the king of lies...

I grabbed this because I get Whitney G.'s newsletter and it sounded interesting. And I guess because part of me will always be hoping for another golden egg of wonder.

That said, I really enjoyed this. The H here is delicious and I am enjoying the twists and turns here...something kind of new for WG - which I applaud.

However, I wish I had waited for all installments of the serial to be out before jumping into this - in my defense, I erroneously thought book two was out already.

That said, I will DEFINITELY be picking this back up and reading the entire serial once it's all released.

The man I married no longer exists. The king of my heart is long gone, and he wears a new name. He’s the king of lies.

Heed the warning! The author makes it very clear that this is a different book than what we're used to from her and ends on a major cliff. She ain't lying, people. This is certainly edgier than anything I've read of hers in the past. And having read her entire backlist, I really do mean that. It also held notes of the vintage Whitney G that I've missed since reading Reasonable Doubt and Turbulence.

The story features a mysterious and enigmatic anti-hero with a sexual prowess that practically sparks off of the pages. And you know I'm all about that! This is a somewhat short read and the story is broken into what's planned to be a trilogy. It doesn't look like we're going to have to wait long between books either with the next one releasing in March.

Now what can I tell you without disclosing any spoilers for you? Umm...almost nothing. *sheepish grin*

I'll tell you that I read this in one sitting. The story seems a bit convoluted at first, but Whitney brings a lot of the pieces together at the end while still leaving you desperate for answers. It's told in alternating POVs with parts in present and the rest in the past leading up to the current events. The story is fed to the reader in short somewhat hazy glimpses. The anti-hero is deliciously dirty, as only Whitney knows how to deliver. We know next to nothing about him, except for the few small bits that are slowly disclosed.

The heroine is pretty easy to like from the very beginning. Perhaps because she's so open about her sexuality. She's been in a bit of a dry spell and isn't above using Tinder to find a spark that will keep her warm for a night. She's also an heiress that gave it all up to live a life of her own, until everything as she knows it comes crashing down when a short affair with a gorgeous stranger turns her work upside down.

It's tough to rate this one with so many questions still up in the air, but it kept me glued to the pages and left me desperate for more. I can't wait for the next installment!

Find me on:

I might change overall rating once the trilogy is complete, but at this moment it's too short & undeserving of a higher rating. Excellent story, though.

Oh my gosh! This book is delicious and dark and it totally blew my mind before dropping me off one serious cliff!

’The man I married no longer exists. The king of my heart is long gone, and he wears a new name. He’s the king of lies.

With a few time jumps, we meet Meredith and learn of her unsuccessful Tinder dates/hookups. When Michael interrupts one such date, this has all the makings for a wonderfully, sexy rom-com. Except that’s not what we get. Things take a decidedly darker turn and the Whitney G world as we’ve always known it is shot to smithereens. And holy heck, was it wild and exhilarating!

This kept me turning pages as fast as I could. Being the first of a trilogy, it’s very short but rich with twists and turns as it drops little nuggets along the way. The next book is to release pretty soon, I believe. So I’m doing my hardest to be patient, but that cliffhanger doesn’t help any. I want book 2, Queen of Lies and I want it now!

We are told right off from the start that Michael our MMC is not your prince charming, and he is more messed up than we believe. I was intrigued from the start about the premise of this book as it is a bit vague and how we also start it off with Meredith being KIDNAPPED and kept hidden from the world by her new husband Michael.

What the hell? He seems cold towards her and tells her she doesn't understand but she will. She is obviously distraught and feels duped into thinking her marriage and love was real.

We also find out she has been missing for almost a month and her friends and her father (even Michael) are giving interviews to find her.

But before we can even find out what the hell is happening, we are put into the ''before'' and find out how these two met each other. At first you think it's random but slowly get to find out that Michael was contracted to find her and do something for her. Though in the meantime before he is to complete the job, he ends up becoming her boyfriend lol not part of the plan and he even knows it and so does his twin brother who is basically like his handler and middle guy with contracts.

First, he was tasked to kidnap her and take her away for a month but then things changed, more money was put on the table, and he was tasked to kill her. Who demanded this?

I had my suspicions that it was her Aunt since she seemed like a complete bitch while her father was trying to build back up their relationship after years of issues and he seemed genuine so to find out that her FATHER was the one who contracted the whole thing was insane, but it makes sense. Pretend to rebuild their relationship so he isn't suspected of anything.

So why? He is mega rich and is running for politics. He abandoned her and her mother, so his feelings are obviously not of love, and he is a good actor. The complete 180 change makes more sense the more you think about it.

Either he does not want her to be his sole inherit after he dies, or he wants her death to push his political agenda? We do not know as the book ends with the father reveal.

You can sense how much Michael struggled to do his job since he fell for her, they start a casual relationship and basically spend every day together. She is even falling for him while he needs to come up with a plan to get what he wants but not harm her.

It's a lot of mystery to be honest and we get more questions than answers by the end of this book which btw is just over 100 pages!

I'm not sure how I feel about this book...

I'd say Whitney G. is famous for writing rather blunt and straightforward sex talk. I always found it pretty hot and entertaining but now I think it's a bit OTT.

The before was quite boring. Their relationship building was nonexistent so I didn't feel the connection between them. Who are these people? How do they work together outside of the bedroom? I know this is not the focus in this book, with it being darkish and having a more important, underlying plot to it but this doesn't excuse the fact that the build-up is missing completely.
I think I could have accepted it more if I had the whole story in front of me but as it is, this book can't get more than 2.5 stars from me.

Meredith was not a likable character. She did some things that were pretty desperate.

At least the book picked up the pace after 67%! It finally got interesting.

When Whitney said it's something different from her usual books, she meant different. King of Lies is part of a series and is pretty short. My feelings are summed up in that one gif. Still undecided about the rating.

I was torn between giving it 2 or 3 stars, but then I made a list of pros and cons and decided to rate it with 2.75, rounded up 3 stars.

NAY :
If these protagonists were bread, they would be toast. I didn't really connect with the character, especially Meredith. I think I liked her as a side character in Turbulence? This just shows that sometimes it's better to leave side characters as side characters.
One thing Whitney excels in is the tension and sex scenes between the characters. I didn't find it here anywhere. Meredith and Michael had an instant attraction at first sight. Everything was more tell than show. Apparently the h and H had this deep connection where they talk about deep shit, but we didn't see any of it. How I am supposed to believe it?
Too much insta-love. Especially from Meredith's point. She seemed really desperate for a lay. Once she slept a couple of times with Michael, she was all in love and all about 'him being the one'. Girl, calm down. You only know this guy for a week.

YAY:
Gillian and Meredith's friendship. Reading this, I realised how much I missed Gillian and Jake from . It's time for a reread. I loved their easy friendship and how they had each other back even oceans apart. Their exchanges are kinda crude and I don't even know why I find it so funny, just that I do :D
Michael seems like an interesting character. He's just another mysterious, rich assholes but there is a twist. I'm intrigue about Trevor, Michael twin brother. I can't read any of them. How does he play a role in all this? What happened to them in the past? Questions over questions, I'm hoping we're getting soon.
The last 30% of the book kept me on my toes. Each chapter was a "what is happening" to "what the hell". The cliffhanger tho...my gut feeling was telling me something, but I was still surprised that I was right.
King of Lies is honestly so short, that I didn't feel bored. So it was a fast read in between breaks. If you are looking for something not too long and heavy, then go for it. It's only around 100 pages long and currently FREE.

2.5 stars.

I struggled a lot with this opening book to the authors new trilogy.
The storyline felt scattered and I wasn't able to become really invested in a lot of it or it's main characters. It all felt very one dimensional to me.
Just too many "wild flights of fancy" going on here!!!!
I have always been such a big Whitney G. fan but for some reason none of her recent releases have really gelled with me. Clearly, she has a very active imagination but I think sometimes less is better. I feel like she is trying to do to much here at the expense of character development and any sense of realism with the storyline. I am not really sure if I do want to read the sequels to this even though this quickie novella does leaves the reader with a cliffhanger ending.

I kinda loved this, but it was over much too soon. With that being said, the setup for the remaining books in the series was established really well and I was more than pleased with the cliffhanger.

Whitney G’s sexier novels have been a go to for me for years now. Her alpha males truly do it for me. They have the edge and exude the level of confidence necessary to be convincing, but not so far gone as to cross boundaries. This particular hero actually has another level that I was really digging!

Michael, the male lead is gorgeous, wealthy, and cocky. But most of all, he’s an enigma. His description and mannerisms drew me in as much as they did the heroine, Meredith. Like him, she is also enigmatic. Not at all what I expected to see in this romance, but I loved her because she’s bold, unapologetic, and goes after what she wants.

Ultimately, these two are perfectly matched. Strong willed characters, unparalleled chemistry in and out of bed, and a striking storyline that’s riddled with suspense and lies made this a really enjoyable read! Recommended!

With King of Lies, Whitney G. produces a sizzling hot, thrilling and unputdownable romance that will transfix the reader from start to finish and them wanting more.

Whitney G. knows how to write hot and captivating stories. No matter their length, I know I’ll get scorching sexy times, characters that will intrigue me and a plot full of secrets and twists that guarantees I’ll be glued to my eReader.

All you need to know about this book is in the summary. Vague much? YES. But I’m a firm believer that the suspense will heighten the reading experience. Although here are my own 2 cents.

Hero: Have you read the prologue? L.O.V.E.D it! Michael is a bit controlling, sexy with a weird moral compass. He’s definitely a hero I liked, and even though there was reason to doubt him, I’m betting on thoroughly loving him in the end. (5 stars)
Heroine: I met Meredith in Turbulence a.k.a. Mr. Turner (5 star read) and was curious about her then and I’m even more curious about her know. (4.5 stars)
Sexiness: Off the charts explosive chemistry, this is after all a romantic thriller a la erotica. Yes I made that up but you get the idea. (5++ stars)
Feels: There’s lots of them. The hero and heroine entering a smart and lusty push/pull dance, the anti-hero going against his better judgment to have the girl, the girl definitely falling in love(5 stars)
Plot/Pace: Perfect page with a plot that’s hooking and twists that had me biting my nails with anticipation. (5 stars)

This was a pretty good start to the series. It started out a bit slow, but it gradually got some steam and ended on a high note. Lots of mystery and questions.

Micheal is yummy! Dark and delicious. Looks can be deceiving though.. I'm wondering what Meredith secrets is keeping too.

It ended in a cliffy and I will be moving on to book 2!

King of Lies was fantastic. It kept my attention from beginning to end and left me wanting more. It contains my fave things in this author's books, cocky hero and strong heroine who gives as good as she gets plus it's a bit dark and twisty. I can't wait to see what happens next and yes I highly recommend it.

Well this was a page turning, exciting beginning to this three book series!

Firstly, the story starts off in the now and then winds back to the beginning to explain how the now happens.

Meredith is looking for a much needed night of hot sex, on Tinder. Well it's not called the booty call app for nothing and it turns out that it can deliver her just what she wants.

The Devil turns out to be the hottest sexual experience she has ever had and a one night stand turns into a repeat edition. For weeks.

However, Michael is hiding the truth from her. Meredith has no idea that the truth could kill her, in more ways than one.

I cannot wait to read more of this trilogy because I need to know what happens to Meredith.

Another fabulous read from Whitney G :)

Okay, so, clearly I did not understand what I was getting myself into.

I wanted a quick read and stumbled upon this in my kindle library (I had downloaded prior). Knowing this was under 200 pages, I clicked to read it, assuming it was some sort of smutty romance. It was my mistake not to reread the synopsis because this is not a smutty romance.

This is a story about a man, Michael, who is hired to "take out" an heiress (who has rejected her fortune), Meredith. Meredith quickly falls in love with Michael, and he makes the mistake of feeling for her too. Having to still fulfill his promise to his client, Michael stages a kidnapping of Meredith after their wedding.

This story takes place during three timelines: Before they met, When they met, and After they married (aka the kidnapping). The way in which the three timelines wove made sense plot wise, so that was a plus. It also left me constantly curious as to what on earth was going on.

Honestly, it isn't even the premise that irked me. Sure I was very confused, wondering what on earth was going on in their ever changing plot. The real issue was the writing. It was so cringey. All of the "dirty" moments were sub-par in their writing, including a moment that went "Ah..." I moaned as they were having sex. Maybe the sex wasn't supposed to be stellar, maybe that isn't what this author is known for, but as someone who has read a lot from the smut genre... this fell way below the bar.

I am sitting here trying to think of how to articulate how fake the character interactions were, how "yikes" all the sex scenes were, but I can't come up with the proper words.

I will admit... I was left very curious. This was a whirlwind of a book and it was so bad that I actually want to read the next book because ... well ... I want to know what happens. I mostly want to know why the person who put the hit out on Meredith did it.

Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book unless you want a good laugh ... or maybe you like a trashy kidnapperXkidnappe trope?

I had no idea this was a novella, or at least a book with less pages than I was expecting. The story was interesting but went a bit too fast for me (and I am not even talking about the relationship). I’m not exactly interested in reading the second book, I think, because I don’t feel like I care enough about the characters to want to know what will happen to them.

So I will be moving on to something else.

3 stars for the nice twist at the end, and the intriguing plot.

Minus 2 stars because so far the hero and heroine have little to no romantic/sexual chemistry. I am giving them a chance, though, for their relationship to grow, since there's 2 more books left.

King of Lies, marks a change in the repertoire of Whitney's stories.
Although this is far better than the previous Never Got Over You, it's still to be decided if it will turn into a good New Era or a bad one.
I absolutely love the way she writes and always devour her new releases like an addict and hopefully, this new mini-series will end up on my "favorites" shelf.

In the meantime though, the secrets and questions this installment left me with, are far too many to be ignored and that's a big reason why I gave it only 3 stars.
After reading the first part I still don't know anything about the main hero and his intentions towards the heroine not even where that prologue stands exactly in the timeline.
There was some connection but it wasn't enough, Meredith and Michael seem to be compatible but even the sex felt flat.
The mystery is a good substitute, but I need more of that too. As for the "dark" element, that is almost laughable. At least on the first installment, it is nonexistent. This is definitely not a dark romance, not even close.

There were scenes though that I absolutely loved, such as the first time they meet and he scares of her date. Or the way he interacts with his twin. Still, though it was a bit awkward how desperate Meredith was at first, although I can understand that was quite the dry spell of two whole years.
She was willing to be subjected to some questionable dates and put herself in some unpleasant situations, to put it mildly.

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE BOOK

- I was almost certain that the culprit was her aunt (and only her because I still believe she is behind it too). Finding out who really is was an interesting turn of events.
- Gillian was a great touch.
- I think this story can go in so many ways and i am excited to see where that will lead.
