Pish. Pillagin', drinkin', and wenchin' are a pirate's callings, but don't steal from dwarves—they hate the competition. Pirate life aside, all I have ever wanted was a safe place for the Lost Boys I rescued. Ambition may have led me to overstep my bounds. When my theft was discovered, the dwarves launch a devastating sneak attack against my island nation home. This time, I've started a war. What can I say? I regret getting caught. I stand ready to fight for my people, but the odds are grim. Hunting submarines with a sailing ship is a new one even for me. Guess I’ll be making this up as I go. Should I fail, those bastards will murder everyone, including the children. Captain Hook
PRAISE FOR THE CAPTAIN HOOK "What a great surprise this gem turned out to be" ŷ review "A pirate’s view of Neverland - it is unique, shedding light on Peter Pan’s escapades. Rescues filled with feats of derring-do show the audacity of Captain Hook. She’s bold, determined, and has a softer heart than you might imagine for a pirate. Her crew is a fascinating mix of odd characters that you’ll love getting to know. The author has a lyrical way of weaving words together that brings each scene to living color. I love it!" ŷ review "...a great action-packed start to the series!" ŷ review

60% of this novel dealt with an impossibly complicated love story between two supremely annoying characters.

This series started off very well and had me "hooked". I have now slipped the hook and will read no further volumes.

Loved the first book. Spent $10 to get the next 2. I want my money back.

2 was fine.

*Spoilers ahoy*

But 3 😬

500+ pages and 450 of them were Hook and John fighting. EVERYTHING one said to the other was taken with EXTREME OFFENSE. I wanted them to get a divorce - they're not even married.

The prologue set us up for something that could have been an incredible story, and I waited page, after page, after page, for that story to unfold; and then it didn't until the last 5 pages of the book. Now I'm assuming there's a 4th book coming, but I won't be reading it.

Tl;Dr Spark notes for the book: prologue set up is Hook cursing Blackbeard to be stuck on an island until she forgives the person who hurt her the most. Then, while mourning Revenge, she announces she gives up chasing Peter Pan in front of her crew. A bunch of pillow talk, more pillow talk, *more* pillow talk 😴 Pirate training with the Lost Boys!

Town is attacked! The places where the royals and high ups of town are blown up. John has been murdered. But that's ok, his secret son, and crown prince of the town (realm?) Is fine. He pretended to be a lost boy, so he's safe out of town. Flirting with Lion Mane, flirting and TONGUE KISSING her 'blood sister', all after she **felt** John die btw. Arguing, arguing, arguing. They figure out it was the dwarves. Hook pissed them off at one point. Fairies were helping dwarves. Arguing. Arguing. Using her blood sisters powers (I think she's based off of Ursula? She has tentacles and is called a sea witch) they beat the dwarves.

Surprise! John is alive! But he did really die for a second. Then there's mention of time travel??? Arguing 500 times. Smee is a leprechaun. Arguing. Capture fairy assassin, was told under fairy oath (they literally can't lie) that it was David Starkey (remember? From book 1?) who gave them names and locations for the royals after being tortured and left on the same island where Blackbeard is. Arguing. Arguing.

Oh Hook can dream travel now. And the Greek gods are here (along with all the fairy tale people Hook makes it a point to mention she's boinked all the princess') a whole speech about how she forgives John for leaving her and breaking her heart.

🌩 Oh no Blackbeard is free. You know, not Peter Pan who kidnapped her as a child and brought her here. Not Blackbeard who basically tortured her and beat the snot outta her.

Forgiving the man shes head over heels with is what frees the monster.

The end.

OH GOD WAIT SHES ALSO THE GRIM REAPER. THANATOS TOLD HER HIMSELF.

This book was interesting. It contained much seafaring knowledge, strong emotions that engage the reader and flowed well but I did have some problems...

1st problem Hook is not as Hooky as she should be as she is suffering from a bad case of character development. Hook is the epitome of anger and revenge with a Touch of sweetness but through the Books her hard exterior has faded enough that she is sometimes soft.

2nd problem Hook forgives Rackham far to easily and doesn't close up quick enough for there to be a wall when he hurts her. It was also kinda confusing when Hook was leaving but a problem comes up and she forgives him so quickly. It is almost like she forgets she was angry so it made for some confusing times.

3rd problem when Rackham supposedly died it wasn't for that long and Hook didn't appear to have much of reaction. During this period of time I was immediately bored because without Rackham there isn't half the drama so I grudgingly read that part until Rackham was alive again.

4th problem ummm.... wasn't it kinda of obvious that Rackham was the one who hurt Hook the most so the they could of avoided blackbeard if only had they used their heads.

Other than that the Book was seamless and I would recommend it and the rest of the series to anyone who likes the following themes:
YA romance
YA fantasy
Strong emotions
Marine adventures
Pirates
Conflict
Peter Pan retellings
Pixies/ Fae
Magic

I felt like the first 6 - 7 chapters were nothing but pillow talk, bedroom banter, and implied sexual activities. Then, finally, the next chapter had hopes of getting on with the real story. But then the disappointment that it was actually just a different revision of a previous chapter. At that point, I was HOURS into the story and hadn't left the bedroom of two people that are incredibly annoying together. I'd like to say the ending was better, but I will never know how it actually ended because I'm done with this story.

Great third book in the series but I had mistakenly assumed this was a trilogy. The story arc for this book is resolved nicely but there is an overall arc that still needs to be explored. I listened to these on audiobook and the humor and snarkiness comes through quite well.
