It's a story about a person called Nairit who lost his tongue because of cancer at the very peak of his career. He was almost believing to have lost his life after losing his say, but then, with an affair, he decides to begin a new life by joining into politics (yes, politics!), parenthetically where speaking is considered to be the first and foremost criteria. The story talks about his journey on how he makes his wildly weird wish into reality, and what changes he brings as a politician, in fact, as a ‘dumb politician! Will he succeed?
I have read more fiction than regular readers read. I have had enough of modern Indian English fiction and I keep observing the trends on a regular basis. At the very outset, I can vouch for the wok by Sudipta because he brings more than mere freshness with his fiction style, storyline, symbolism, and almost an Aristotelian fall and rise in the protagonist by his acts and decisions. Nairit's story will impress the readers because he can be related to youths of India who want to contribute to the nation-building but are not sure what to do, where to begin. He can also represent the entrepreneurial ambitions for the cause of the country. He can also be equalled with those who think fate had enough games with their lives and now it's the time to do something on one's own... Nairit can be an inspiration for many and can be a protagonist of a wonderful novel for many. A person dumbed by cancer (that is because of his own ignorance and bad habits) who challenges the conventions and does something we cannot think of doing... rest of the things take a backseat and you will certainly enjoy knowing more about the person being discussed... get your copies soon!
The Dumb's Story is a transformation story of once an outspoken guy who lost his tongue due to cancer. After losing his ability to speak, Nairit, the central character of the book, stands up again with fresh energy to achieve the goal of his life. He did not let his disability come on the way in pursuing his dreams. How did he manage everything is definitely worth a read. I really appreciate the author for the treatment he has given to this story.
Sudipta's novel is about hope, desire to change things around oneself, teamwork, never giving up spirit and a little rashness in one's attitude which is rather normal with people of the day. Nairit, a person who has almost everything any ordinary individual could desire today, loses everything including his hope because he has to lose his tongue to save himself (or his body except his tongue because of cancer). What now? The guy could have become a survivor and remain rest of his life isolating himself somewhere... but, Nairit does not give up and rises to take up a mission to change the world around. He joins politics after he becomes famous with his contributions to the village community. Will he win an election? What will he do after becoming an MP? Will he be able to manage things as he is a dumb? Enjoy this wonderful novel by Sudipta and enjoy the unconventional themes that modern authors are offering... :)
A Dumb's Story is not a silent tale as the subtitle predicts. It is a tale that tells many stories and asks many questions of the readers on several occasions. The novelist has made his agenda clear –Ìýcan we put life into someone who should supposedly be silent and isolated for his life? And he does it. A story that does not let the readers rest... keeps them on toe and aware until it ends. How? Read it to know further... a romantic beginning, a serious development and an equally serious conclusion with a few rushed attempts at radically transforming the nation...
The book starts with the reader being introduced to Nairit, a protagonist who has been at the hospital in coma. Among severe circumstances, we are informed that cancer has led to the loss of his tongue, therefore, his speech. We are given insight into his character, romantic life, and personal ambitions as the book progresses and one must say that the author is adept at sketching his protagonist in the light of tragedy. Portraying the inner state of the protagonist after the loss of his ability to speak is attained by the usage of first person narrative, as in an inner monologue Nairit yells -
' I can't speak! I can't talk! I can't say any more in my life'
However, tragedy doesn't curb his desire for aiming for something better, something beyond his scope and he is led to believe in his ability to make it in the sphere of politics. He isn't motivated by greed or sheer ability to attract sympathy for his situation, his causes are at the most human and basic level. However, as we connect political figures with great speakers we realise how this ordeal can be a bit of a challenge for someone like Nairit who is dumb.
The problem with the book, although subjective, has to be it's writing style. Somehow I found it unable to convey the events of the plot properly as it juggled between the first and third person narrative- otherwise a brilliant device of narration. There were parts that just got too tedious to read at a stretch, lacking any arresting turns of phrases or something that would make me read it more attentively. Minor grammatical errors can be excused.
I would commend the authors ability to come up with a unique plot, in a world of repetitive novels. His characterisation abilities are on point, and with some work done on his presentation skills, I can figure Sudipta Roy as a fine author of our times.

The title of the book says a lot about it. Yes, it is a story of a dumb guy for whom his mobile phone becomes his voice. Now, if you are thinking that this book would be filled with negativity and hopelessness then you're wrong. It has everything to entertain you, to make you feel emotional as well as energetic at the same time, and to inspire you. The storyline is quite arresting and didn't let you leave in between. I am sure, you would seek to know the climax. So, if you want to know more about the protagonist and his journey then you have to be part of his journey. A good book. Go for it guys.
As I started reading this book, I found it interesting. Its pace was fast and the narration was smooth. In no time, I became a part of Sudipta's story. However, when I was half done with it became a little boring. Its pace slowed down. I was struggling to flip through pages. But, what kept me motivated is its thoughtful characters - Nairit, Neer, Bayu and Nri. Out of these four characters I liked Nairit's optimistic attitude and Neer's rebelliousness. Overall, it is one time with certain life-changing lessons.
You should never bow down to any situation and this is the only way you can achieve your desired goals. This is the lesson the Dumb's Story gives to its readers. The plot of the book is quite intriguing and the narration is simple though engaging. And I am seriously in love with Charismatic Nairit, the male protagonist of the book. The author has developed him really well.
Nairit was at the peak of his career when a fatal incident took his voice. He got immersed swamp of pain. Loneliness began to suck his blood. His will to live was getting weak with each passing day. Once reckless in his attitude, he has become helpless, hopeless. Then, he made a U-turn. He diverted all his attention to his new dream of becoming a politician. This is how the story of The Dumb's story moves. But, I am not going to tell you about what all twists and turns the story takes and where it ends. However, one thing is certain that this book would not let you guess the climax. It would surprise you all the time. And I really appreciate the author for this. Newness in his style and storyline as well as his perception of literature.
I enjoyed this book very much! Yes, it is a fictional tale. However, the lessons of life it teaches you are worthy enough to change your life. The book dives into the world of a Dumb person, Nairit, who is willing to join politics to change the picture of country's politics as well as the society. Though he does succeed in helping the people standing on the margins in getting their works international fame, whether he succeeds in his bigger mission is something you only have to discover. But, I am sure that the world of Nairit would definitely push you to explore his struggles, his challenges, his pains and how he overcomes them. Soothing read!
I really liked this book. There's a lot to learn in this book. In the rat race, Sudipta has come up with a unique plot and an amazing storyline that touches your soul. It is about determination, faith and confidence. It is about tearing the veil of negativity and let positivity touch and shine you. It is about parents and children relationship. It is about a support system to achieve unexpected. Overall, it's a remarkable read for me! I am not giving away anything in terms of storyline. Do read it because I really want you (any reader) to read it. You will certainly find it wonderful.
Writing style is perfect if you keep in mind that this was the first time an author was writing a full-length novel! Sudipta has given something entirely new to the readers and the storyline, plot and the theme that could conjure many elements together have to be appreciated by the readers who understand how much it takes to do something that is not being done by others. Nairit does not give up even after being diagnosed with cancer and his tongue being cut-off so that he could survive. He leaves lavish career behind and starts social work with true devotion and is able to make some good friends who support him... however, his clumsy or rather hurried ways to get 'his' wishes fulfilled in political landscape might seem weird to many readers... the ending is perfect because it is not inspired by bollywoodesque conclusions. I really liked it!
Can a politician be without voice and yet succeed in the world of politics? Can a politician think about human values and respect basic needs of people? Can a politician be productive? There are many questions that we often have. Moreover, the novel also raises many existential questions. Why do we live? What do we get out of our daily jobs? Should we even work if money is not important? How can we improve the lives of others who are on the margin? The story is inspiring, interesting and also satisfying in terms of being a fictional story.
Interesting read. A young boy named catches cancer that too of mouth.
He becomes literally unable to speak .
He gets so much engrossed with the fact that what others will think that i m not talking he becomes home stuck almost. But then there is nei and neer. This is a story of manifesting hope . It is a story that tells how with his willpower he starts in a path that needs best oratory skills .
Yes it's politics. I liked nairit's personality . And how author speculated his individual self . And that love wins at last too. It is beyond all comparisons. And brutal cancer too :( . The last pages were bit sad vibes. Loved the ending. Narration is good. Short chapters .
15 almost together. Nice read of strength of heart , a message to tell if there is will there is a way and to have faith and walk beyond limits.
Sudipta's story brought a much-needed freshness on my reading desk. I have been reading many novels by many authors recently and I was looking for a way out of my confusion and rather a boredom born out of reading many novels of a kind... A Dumb's story is innovative as well as progressive. It moves from point A to B, changes directions, faces realistic consequences and the characters are not invincible except a few heroic tasks that they perform such as the one with the MPs... the novel is good and you will surely enjoy it as well as appreciate the work done by the author.
We have all been reading fiction for years (those in my reading circle) and we have come across many books that leave us stunned... Sudipta's book is one of them. He has tried to offer his readers something that satisfies the readers as well as illuminates them with ideas, observations and thoughts and even compel them to ruminate about the same... this story of Nairit will surely give a new dimension to contemporary fiction in India if more readers read this book.
I came to know about the book by reading a sudden review of one of the leading . The idea instantly had my attention and now that I have read the book, I can say that the reviewer had done justice to the novel. I rather like the idea to introduce the character's motif in a very personal, first-person narrative. Nairit is a fabulous character, also the protagonist, and he renders his life into a cyclic of realisation. The present scenario matches very much with the predicament of this leading character as we can see around us people bullying each other, competing for each other's bread on the plates, fighting for each other's jobs, and not yet satisfied with their lives. Amidst all this frustration, Nairit's life can be exemplary if we study his character minutely. Hope readers will enjoy this book and learn from it. Good job done by the author!
Sudipta's book is one of the best books I have recently read. This book explores many issues that definitely leave a great impact on us. One of them is - convincing people for any new idea. It is really challenging, especially with villagers, as they don't feel comfortable with the change. Nairit, the protagonist, and Bayu, his best-friend, together devise to open a start-up business to save villagers of Mrityunjay village from the vicious circle of taking and repaying loans. Would they be able to gain the trust of villagers? Would villagers agree to join hands with them? I like the way author has described even minute details so that our experience of The Dumb's Story would remain flawless thoroughly. I recommend this to everyone who wants to read something beautiful, interesting and lively... full of meaning and symbols...
The episode where Nairit describes how would an image of Neer would look better with many people and how a romantic moment takes a very different turn and Neer is impressed enough to join the reformation drive... The story of Nri and Bayu, the story of transformation of Mrtyunjay and then the story ends in a realistic way... yes, it's seldom possible to defeat cancer... Nairit's life can become an exemplary lesson for all who think there is nothing to too little in life to live for... even after losing one's tongue, the novel tells you how much one has to love and live and do... wonderful novel and great storyline. I like reading the works that offer difference!
I think our literature needs more of such work. I really thank you Sudipta Roy for coming up with this unique plot. It too has a love story but it is not limited to it. It sees beyond it. It has teachings, humour, sentiments, power to bring change (internally and externally). From its title, you can guess that it is a story of a dumb. I say it is a journey of a dumb to become outspoken. I feel this book should especially be read by those who always complain about things they don't have. Loved it.
The idea behind the story is interesting. The book portrays the transformational phases of Nairit's life, the protagonist - from talkativeness to dumbness, from being lonely to popular. The author has tried to describe the ups and downs, twists and turns of (dumb) Nairit's life and how he became outspoken, though dumb, Member of Parliament. There's enough depth given to understand the other characters' personalities and relationships they shared with Nairit. There are a lot of things in this book that will surely hook you throughout.
Truly appreciate the honesty of the author! He has tried to capture the life of a motivated young man who tries to change the political landscape of the country overnight but does not succeed entirely... yes, there is fictional colouring that we often see in the cinema halls but for a larger part, A Dumb's Story is a wonderful novel about Nairit who loses his voice but not his guts and grit and assembles a team to do social reforms that bring to him fame, friends and a motif in life. Enjoy the work!
I have read many novels but did not read anything like this. Sudipta's story is fundamentally about a person who does not let his inability to speak hinder the way to success... he achieves what he dreams to do and does it in fashion. From glass doors to the corridors of slums, from high profile meetings to meeting the politicians and goons, from lucrative salary to humble beginnings... the novel tells many stories and Nairit's tongue tells it all... do read it.
Objectivity often arises when we lose motivation in being too subjective, being too much for oneself and doing a lot for personal gains. This is what the novel tries to describe... I liked the core idea of this work. Nairit does things that would benefit the society at large and he also raises new talents who could continue his work... not emotional but certainly an abstract kind of story stuffed with nice plot, wide theme and multiple perspectives...
Though almost got duped by the diary narrative to third person narrative, I liked the novel when it began to develop right in the middle of it... the shift from working for wealth and oneself to working for people and aspiring to become someone who could bring a change does make Nairit a better, a realised and a likeable person. The novel should be a lifesaver for all those who are searching for something 'better' after reading erotica or a thriller without legs...
This book is a reminder call that it is not negativity and disability that limits you and pull you down, it is your willpower that snatches everything from you, breaks you and does not let you achieve anything. It is not a story of Nairit (the protagonist). Rather, it is the story of each one of us. How easily we bow down before situations... We shouldn't. This book explains hard times are always for your highest good. A wonderfully crafted story that you will surely love.
Sudipta's novel will make you think about everything your life, your works, your career, your goals and yourself. Nairit is a case study for some and inspiration for many. His life and his mistakes, his dedication and philanthropic goals, his ideas and grit to never stop in spite of troubles... A Dumb's Story talks too loud and you will enjoy the tale...
Sudipta's novel made me think... how can we miss such works and be fooled by the low-grade fiction we get to read week in and out! Well, leaving that aside, there are many things that I liked in this novel. The characters, the plot, the idea behind the theme and the conclusion as well. Everything in the novel is perfect and it entices the readers to complete the reading in one go... read pages from Nairit's diary and then come to the present where he is trying his luck in politics and doing his bit for social welfare. There are a few things that might sound far-fetched or just too much to go along with the storyline... You will find out such things if you read carefully.
Sudipta Roy has done a wonderful job in creating a world that challenges the protagonist Nairit and throws towards him the biggest and perhaps the most difficult challenge in life. He is diagnosed with cancer, gets his tongue cut to save himself from dying but, in the process, loses his motivation to live... to work and to do anything else. Loses his girl too. What now? Will he be able to speak? Will he be able to work without his tongue? Will he be forced to leave his job? The novel keeps you one step ahead with your thoughts but deceives you with the wonderfully planned progress of the storyline.
I liked everything in the novel and I do appreciate the author for bringing out such a novel that offers alternative perspectives to the readers who think thriller and romance are everything! I liked this serious and yet entertaining fiction keeping the readers at the edge of their reading chairs all the time... However, the narrative does have to improve if the author wants and he rather should... the art of storytelling is native to the author but the way he manages to navigate the story to its logical, as well as fictional conclusion, must have variety.
