Joe Konrath has written over twenty novels in the Lt. Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels thriller series. They do not have to be read chronologically to be enjoyed, but the order is: Whiskey Sour, Bloody Mary, Rusty Nail, Dirty Martini, Shot of Tequila, Fuzzy Navel, Cherry Bomb, Dead On My Feet, Serial Killers Uncut (with Blake Crouch), Shaken, Stirred (with Blake Crouch), Dying Breath, Everybody Dies, Rum Runner, Last Call, White Russian, Shot Girl, Chaser, Old Fashioned, Bite Force, and Witch Brew. More coming soon.

Wow, that's a lot of Jack.

If you like your thrillers on the dark side, check out the Konrath Dark Thriller Collective, which includes the books The List, Origin, Afraid, Trapped, Endurance, Haunted House, Webcam, Disturb, What Happened To Lori, The Nine, Second Coming, and Close Your Eyes.

Joe also wrote the Stop A Murder mystery puzzle series, where you become the sleuth and solve brain teasers to try and catch a killer.

He also wrote the sci-fi trilogy, Timecaster, Timecaster Supersymmetry, and Timecaster Steampunk. Even if you don't think you like sci-fi, give them a try. They feature Joe's well-known characters from his other series, and are insane.

With Ann Voss Peterson he wrote the Codename: Chandler thrillers, including Flee, Spree, Three, Hit, Exposed, Naughty, Fix (with F. Paul Wilson), Rescue, and Free.

And, finally, he writes erotica under the pen name Melinda DuChamp, also with Ann Voss Peterson. Those books are probably too spicy for you, so only the brave and bold should seek them out.

Joe writes a lot. You should probably read everything.

Action Galore!

Small backstory:

Jack along with her husband, Phin and their daughter, Sam have just settled into a new home and hoping that they can relax from all the violence that invaded their lives for so many years. They just want to be "normal" people with normal problems and not have to worry about looking over their shoulders wondering when the next criminal is going to hunt them down.

But things don't always go as planned and when Jack and her family meet their neighbor Mr. Wintergarten something just doesn't set well with Jack and Phin. They are not sure what has their psyches rattled but the old man neighbor sets off their alarm meters for some reason.

When Mr. Wintergarten seems to take a liking to Sam and starts bringing over chocolate chip cookies, Jack and Phin feel that there is something more then just the old man being a nice neighbor, but what is the old man hiding and is it something they need to be worried about?

That is all I can give out with a small backstory so if you want to know more then go read this book and series.

Thoughts:

This was a great story and it kept me pinned to my chair as I had a hard time putting this book down! The story slowly works its way up into suspense and then Konrath slowly lowers the boom as the story jumps into turbo mode when things go crazy and everything hits the fan!

As always there is some funny quips thrown in to the story as Konrath brings back Harry McGlade and the laughs start rolling. I was chuckling a lot through this one as Harry being Harry was throwing out the jokes left and right. It helps soften the blow of what the story dances around in this book which I won't go into as it would be a spoiler so you will have to read it to find out for yourself.

Another great book by this author and looking forward to reading the next book in the series which is Bite Force. Giving this book five "Thrills and Chills" stars!

I used to love these books!

This one is calling people who love this country, “white nationalists , so i have nothing left to say. We read for getting away from being called name, politics, etc. Writers need to understand that!

I'm not sure what has happened in the last few books, but putting in the pandemic and adding all the little gender/sexual references that don't flow with the story and having little digs at people on the right side of politics just irks me.It feels out of place and not necessary to the plot and characters. I read books to avoid all these things as they are absolutely everywhere in everyday life, so I was so disappointed to be confronted with it all in book 14 of an otherwise great series. I know it was only little things here and there but it was so annoying to me, it left a bad taste in my mouth, which is why I only gave three stars. If I hadn't read the other books in the series and therefor knew how great Konrath's characters and plots usually are, I would have probably given it two stars. This one didn't even quite feel like a Konrath book at times. The bad guys are getting a lot more unbelievable and all the injuries to the main characters are getting pretty hard to swallow...and yet, I will probably read the next one too! Go figure!

best series ever!

The Jack Daniels series is always so fun, action packed, hilarious, and yes, graphic! The characters are over the top and funny but really likable and sometimes relatable! I love this series; you can always count on being entertained.

Jack is back!

I am always so excited to read another book in this series. I've yet to be bored or disappointed by Jack or any of her many friends. Netflix, why isn't this a series???? It would be one of your best!

I didn't love the addition of setting Old Fashioned within the pandemic. It felt forced. I think the story would have worked just as well, if not better, without forcing the last two years into the book.

3 stars because I love Phin. And because there was just the right amount of Harry in Old Fashioned.

Amazeballs!

I really enjoyed this book.

Jack was a little different; funnier and slightly less serious. It made her seem more real, vulnerable and more likeable. For the first time, I felt like she and Phin were real people facing the same concerns as the rest of us in a marriage, finding time for each other while raising their daughter and moving to a new house, all during the COVID pandemic. Of course, there was a serial killer involved and I wasn't sure whether they would all make it out alive this time.

Neighbor Larry gives Jack some weird vibes. He offers to help, bakes cookies and takes an immediate interest in Sam and Jack. But he's old and harmless. Or is he?

The infamous Harry McGlade played a large part in this book and was, as usual, hilarious with a dash of disgusting. Cleverpants.

JACK IS BACK!!!!

Konrath gave us another great Jack Daniels adventure. He just knows how to mix thriller, action, horror, and comedy together to make books that you will skip meals for, as you can’t stop turning pages. He seems to have a clear
understanding that his readers invest in his cast of quirky good guys and villainous bad guys, as you can only appreciate good if you compare it with bad, and vice versa. Jack, Phin, Harry, and Sam learn again that what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and I can’t wait to meet Blood in the next episode.

This was a really entertaining installment of the Jack Daniels series. You knew who the bad guy as pretty on and you knew what he was doing, so there were no surprises. But it was still a fun journey. I also love their daughter, Sam. So cute and a genius!

First let me say I LOVE Jack and company, however this book was a train wreck from start to finish. I’m very disappointed in this one, it’s almost like someone else wrote it.

Well that explains why I felt lost in the sauce... this is the 19th in the friggin' series.

Can't say after reading this one that I am interested in backtracking into Jacqueline aka "Jack" Daniels' historical archives though. I will settle with knowing her and Phin exist. They should be able to handle themselves without me reading about it.

The Covid era setting didn't age well, nor did the punny, "inside joke every other line" style. Clearly, I missed the alcoholic title reference, surely it was in conjunction with Jack's name, but it never paid off for me within the plot, which felt ripped off adjacently from "Rear Window".

Konrath seems to have taken every notable crime fiction premise, activity, technique, crime style, etc., and thrown them into the end of week goulash pot. With all that goodness, one would think something good should become of it, but alas it was just a quick reference guide to everything that was more original and easily the forebearer to this effort.

The Villain, Larry the next-door neighbor, has racked up an all-time high number of kills, near to 500, over the past 40 years, unabated and unnoticed. Easily doubling real world-Luis Garavito from Columbia, or individually besting the actual top four most prolific all time serial killers combined. All in the name of feeding his cannibal sister?! Come on man. What a farce. I won't even bother with talking about "Blood" and his contribution to the serial killer environment in Destiny.

Meanwhile in the home of the cool kids, we get all the slang, terminology, and originality of a woke MTV reality show, including their 8 year olds playing "Battle Tanks" or who cares what the contrived name was. Even while, at one point, the heroine was hanging upside from the rafters in the killer's lair, having an existential "what if" moment, never once did I give a care about her survival. The characters were flat, self-indulgent, and missing gravitas.

Pity, Konrath shows to be quite prolific in his writing output. Shame it wasn't any good in this instance. No more Konrath for me.

Thanks for reading.

I can never get enough of the irreverence, snarky, canabilistic, murdery tales. There is no other like JA Konrath! . Well, ok, maybe a couple other names that are him.
and I eagerly awaited this book and tried to nurse it as long as I could. Although Mr. Konrath might seem to move at a faster pace to some, that’s one of the many things that draw me to every missive of his as soon as it drops **Insert Harry McGlade one-liner here** There’s a lot going on in Jack & Phil’s neighborhood, Esther home bound with daughter Samantha, thanks to Covid. Yes they still manage to bring in Harry McGlade and his son and a trove full of antics and delightfully disgusting things Definitely unique setting and I’m excited to watch Samantha grow. I want to have a whiskey with Phin, a White Russian with Jack & something fruity w/ an umbrella with Harry.

Ready for more, more, more but most importantly: THANK YOU to JA - you ARE da man!!

Ironic that the only time I recognized my life was a gift was when someone threatened to take it away from me. Or maybe that was just the ketamine talking.

The fourteenth installment in the Jack Daniels series was actually pretty tame compared to previous books. Only a little mild cannibalism and just one sex scene, with the barest mention of vibrating butt plugs. Practically PG.
However, I like where the story is heading and I wasn't mad about the inclusion of Covid-19 because it wasn't at the forefront of the story. In fact, it actually played a key realistic part. After waiting so long for this installment, I was underwhelmed.

It was really good sinking my teeth back into another Konrath, 'JD' book after a significant hiatus. Although it started a tad slow, once the action started, the pace quickened and I could not put it down until I had finished. I really enjoyed the comedic elements provided by the Harry character, and it made me remember how much I enjoyed Konrath's books for that very reason - the combination of thrills, chills and comedy all in one. Ive already pre-ordered the sequel to this, Bite Force, due for release in July 2022. Well done Mr Konrath. I note a number of new releases due for 2022...cheers, and Keep up the good work !

Comedy, Thrills, and Horror

This book is part of series of which all are named for drinks. The drink recipe is printed in the beginning. I was intrigued by the titles, and when I opened the first one, I was pleasantly surprised that the main character was a Chicago cop...a female cop. Since I have lived in Chicago my entire life, I enjoy reading books set in Chicago by Chicago authors. Therefore, I recommend this book, as well as the entire series. All of them can be read as stand-alones, but I recommend starting from the beginning.

Phin, Jack, & Sam have moved into their new home and the new neighbor is a little "off". Jack's cop intuition is telling her something is wrong. Missing persons in the town they have made a home in top the national average and all is not what it seems. The story takes place during covid which is a turn off with vax and opinions on the "pandemic" Jack enlists McGlade's help which consists of all of the OTT shenanigans. The books ends with a segue into the next book in series which I will be reading

Old Fashion

A Jack Daniels story, a good one in fact! I had always loved this series. And in spite of there being almost the same characters in every story .. Dealing with serial killers ... It blows my socks off! I am vested in the characters ... They have made me laugh, cry and cringe ...especially Jack's BFF. Fast paced .... Exciting ... Looking for the next in line .... Total enjoyment!!!

Not Quite a Mystery; but Still Quite Shocking

The author leads you down the dangerous path, in your own mind, to horrors untold, early in the story. Many people, such as myself, will realize what is really going on long before it is revealed. However, sometimes knowing there is something that goes bump in the night still brings paralyzing fear when you come face to face with pure terror.

Horrible Book

This was one of the worst books I've ever read. I've read thousands of books, so that's saying a lot. The dialogue was annoying.. Harry McGlade was especially irritating, and the entire interaction conversations between all parties was disjointed. The premise of the story was ridiculous. I will definitely remember the author to be sure I never make the mistake of reading any other books written by him.

I've read the first 8 in this series and several of the subsequent ones. I love the writing and the mystery.
This book had a really different twist and a different overall concept. The villains are just as villainous, but motivations are really fuzzy. It does not depend on any of the previous books unlike some of the others that count on previous stories. JA Konrath is always good for some thought provoking mystery and content.

I absolutely love these sick, twisted, hilarious, entertaining books. I am never disappointed. I have even started liking Harry after all these books. I honestly don’t even know what I could say to make you want to read these, just do it. Get any book by Konrath & read it. It’s amazing. Don’t take my word for it…READ IT!!!

All of the usual shocking elements of the Jack Daniel's series' installment. I love that the author has made Jack's and Phin's daughter a super smart and precocious child. And of course they'd move in next to a monster in disguise.Throw in Covid and sinkholes and that's enough to make me race through the book!

So graphic and far fetched it's funny, but the gory bits are somehow funnier than the funny bits. Sticking balls on the end of everything and the jokes her friend makes in front of the children are not funny no matter how precocious the little darlings are. The neighbour is the best bit of the story.

Surprising and unexpectedly entertaining

This is the first Konrath book I’ve read. If I wasn’t such a cheap shit I’d probably read a lot more of them. Can hardly wait for another one to come up for free! If this were a movie, it would rank right up there with “Silence of the Lambs.

Catharsis over. Time to get shit done... Jack Daniels is back!

After the slight disappointment (in my humble opinion) that was "CHASER" with all that overdose of characters and over , the author returns here to the basic formula that made this series famous (maybe that's why this one is called "OLD FASHIONED"). Jack and Phin moved away and are trying to start a new life with a clean slate, centered mostly on their daughter Sam (a wonderful character, definitely my favorite on this book). But, as Jean de La Fontaine once said “A person often meets his destiny on the road he took to avoid it., so guess who's the sadistic serial killer that's been haunting that neighborhood for decades? Yop, that's right, the old men living just in front of Jack - and it won't take long until he starts hunting her.

This book is great, really a back to the basics crime thriller, with great characters, a creepy serial killer (well several, in fact... with blood sucking and cannibalism) and lots of hard boiled thrills and action. As in all the series, there's some excellent dark outrageous humor, but I've noticed that it was toned down (even Harry McGlade is less over the roof than usual). The book is a stand alone and the main case is closed, but it ends with a minor cliffhanger so I will have to jump to BITE FORCE immediately - luckily I'm on spring break vacation!

Great story line. Characters are very well developed. Lots of twists and turns. Would have given it 5 stars except too much sex and perverted language. Jack Daniels is a very strong woman and a great detective. Good police procedures and accurate description of situational awareness. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.if
