She embraces her Scottishness with fantastical Scottish settings and a dash of mythology, no matter if she's writing about Celtic gods, cat shifters, or the streets of Edinburgh.

When she's not typing away at her favourite cafe, Skye loves dried mango, as much exotic tea as she can squeeze into her cupboards, and being covered in pet hair by her tiny black cat (who's secretly a demon).

I had my doubts about whether or not I should read this book, seeing as how I did not have the best experience with this author's writing, but I decided to give it a chance.
It actually started out okey. The story was pretty interesting and was quick to suck me in.
So, our MC - Isla, lives in a dystopian world. The world after the Drowning, as they call it, is not a pretty place to live in. People are few and women are even rarer. On the Salvation Island where Isla lives her Uncle is in charge and he's not a good man. He decided that it was time to get Isla married, so she was to be sold to a highest bidder (the man she actually knew was a cruel individual). On the day of that happy event, Isla got drunk and walked away from the village, using the frozen water as her road.
That's when the things started to go downhill for me. Up to that point, I was really enjoying the story, but the good did not last long. It felt as though the moment Isla met the four shifter guys she suddenly became stupid. Like, really stupid.
“You should have read the whole chapter. is the best sentence to describe the MC. She constantly behaved immature and never listened to the whole story. She would hear a snippet of a conversation, make up her mind based on some ridiculous arguments and then go and do something irrational about it, later blaming someone else for it. Case in point: when she woke up and heard the guys talking about being bear shifters she decided that they saved her because they wanted to eat her, so she climbed on the roof and then jumped off, twisting her ankle in the process, which she later blames on the guys.
“That sounds a bit over the top? Dramatic? .
Even her inner bear (yeah, spoiler) called Isla immature. Although, to be honest, Alis is not much better. She's so full of herself, it was rather annoying.

So, yeah. I'm not gonna read the next book.

Saved by bears. I’ve been reading shifter romances lately and already had this on my kindle.
Isla needs to leave her home and she stumbles across a pack of bears. As she gets to know them she finds a new home and so much more. This is RH and has a HEA but there’s more in the series.

This was just what I was looking for. I like this author and enjoyed the book.

This reverse harem with bear shifter was a short but sweet read and I really enjoyed reading it. Had some cringe moments but overall it was a lovely read. Really liked the male bears and I'm excited to see where the story goes next.

Ilya annoys me so much lol 😂!!! She has too many rules too many. She doesn’t want to be part of the culture. She hates the rules and keeps trying to kill herself. I refused to let Iyla annoy me enough to not enjoy this trilogy.

I love Torbin soo much !! The accent, the body the fact that he’s a freaking polar bear. Yay 😁!! He is delish.com!!

I cannot wait until book 2 !! I am already downloading it and I know I should be prepping my notes for this meeting but f that!! Lol 😂

Happy reading everyone 😘🥰😘🥰!!

Bears!!

I so love me some bears so when I heard about this book I knew I had to read it. The world has changed drastically after what the call the drowning. The sea end was well as other stuff killing most of the world, sinking lots of land, and the weather is getting colder. We meet Isla who lives in an island with a horrible Uncle about to be forced into marriage with an abusive man. She flees across the ice instead where she almost died but is saved by four bear shifters. This will change everything. Great World building with awesome characters that really make the story flow. I do need my own bear now!! Perfect for paranormal RH romance fans. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Isla lives with her uncle whom she isn't close to at all. After her parents died she became his responsibility and in the society they live in after the flooding that happened and wiped out a lot of the land in this world, men hold all the power in her village. She was studying to be the healer of her village but her uncle has other plans and tells her she is to marry a man she despises because he was abusive to another woman who escaped. She's locked in a room until the marriage can take place but she escapes and gets off the island she's been on her whole life.

She doesn't know where she's going and there's ice and snow covering the ground, she gets too tired to go on and almost dies out in the elements. She's found by one of the bear shifters and brought back to their cabin where they warm her up. She finds out about the 4 of them when she overhears them talking and confronts them pretty early on about being bear shifters. She's kinda naive, and does something dumb which is when she gets hurt but the guys bring her back and she gets to know them. She finds herself attracted to the alpha, their leader the most at first but by the end of the story she's the mate to all of them. This is a reverse harem story, so because of that I already knew that she was going to end up with more than one mate.

I really didn't like how idiotic Isla acts at times. I know she's been sheltered and is naive but she does stupid things and acts dumb at times. Isla has been bullied by her uncle, pushed around, told what to do and then she has to deal with Alis who pretty much does the same thing to her. I hated Alis's character and if you read this you'll see why and who she is, I'm not giving that away. The guys were pretty interesting characters, I hope that we get to know them all a little better in the series though because I didn't really feel like I knew them too well.

I enjoyed this book but I think the characters need to be developed a bit more and we need a little more information on how the flood happened, what caused it ect. I would also like more info on the shifter mythology because the rules for these guys were a little different from other shifter books I've read.

One of those books you hate yourself in the morning for reading. The main character is an idiot, she nearly dies about 3 times from hypothermia, but keeps running out in the snow to feel sorry for herself with no coat or shoes or anything. And frequently injuring herself, so is carried helplessly everywhere for the majority of the book. She's also written extremely immature and naive, so although she's 20, she seems all of about 14, which makes the romance portion uncomfortable. Due to that immaturity, there's no chemistry or heat whatsoever between her and the male love interests, especially with the main one. Full of silly inconsistencies: like the Drowning happened 13 years ago, she grew up on a secluded island where no boats come, nor is she even aware there are boats that trade between the islands, but when she gets to a new place, is immediately asking for things that would have been unavailable for years on her island (like hot chocolate or tea), and not remotely surprised to get them; or how she would have only been 7 when it happened, and also lives on an island with few other women where women are oppressed, but somehow remembers all sorts of political and social issues, and is allowed to pursue schooling far beyond what other girls were allowed, even though her uncle is the one forcing women into early marriages and denying them educations (and no, he holds no affection for her or her mother, so wouldn't have treated her differently). And really could have gone without constantly hearing about her ovaries in relation to finding a dude hot; and seriously, naming her ovaries? WTF.

New favorite shifter

I’m now in love with bear shifters. Who needs those silly mainstream wolves anyway. I had so much fun reading this. And Isla is a fantastic heroine that just makes my heart happy.

She ran to survive. She found something wilder.

In a world drowned by climate disaster and ruled by survival, Isla escapes a brutal arranged marriage by fleeing across frozen sea, expecting to die. Instead, she finds shelter with four mysterious men living off the grid. Torben, Finn, Ràn, and Húnn are not just survivors, they're bear shifters with a history as deep as the land they roam.

As Isla heals from the scars of her old life, she discovers that her connection to these men runs far deeper than she ever expected. One night with Torben triggers a powerful, ancient bond that could transform her life forever or end it if left incomplete.

Struggling with the loss of control and the weight of transformation, Isla must confront the truth of who she is becoming and what it means to be claimed not just by one, but by many.

Isla, Torben, Finn, Ràn, and Húnn evolve from guarded survivors into emotionally open individuals learning to trust themselves and one another. Isla grows from a frightened runaway into a powerful woman with agency, while each of the men reveals his own layers of vulnerability, strength, and devotion. Their bond deepens into a polyamorous connection built on respect and shared purpose.

Power, consent, and identity are at the heart of this post-apocalyptic romance. The emotional intimacy is real, the steam is strong, and the sense of found family is everything. The reverse harem structure isn't just spicy, it serves the story’s core themes and emotional journey.

A post-apocalyptic, RH, shifter romance that explores consent, survival, transformation, identity, found family, power dynamics, freedom, trust, belonging, polyamory, female agency, healing, loyalty, primal instinct, and rebirth. First in the series, ends on a cliffie.

Kyo Sija’s narration brings solid energy to the audiobook. Some voices shine more than others, but the variety of accents adds charm. Personally, multiple narrators would’ve elevated the poly dynamic, but overall, it’s well-produced with clean audio.

3.5 Sterne

I liked where this book started. The dystopian setting, and escaping a barbaric type environment and finding the 4 bear shifters. After that the book starting moving along rather fast and there wasn’t enough character and relationship development. Also lots of missing information. Nobody says anything about bonding then it happens and still nobody really talks about it. A book is given to Isla to read about it and the book isn’t even 100% correct and the information she read isn’t really shared with the reader. The story had really great potential but i feel like it fell flat.

Not gonna lie, I read this because the title sounded kinda funny and I got it for free on BookBub. Spoiler, it was actually one of the worst things I've EVER read in my whole life 💀 But I also don't know why I'm shocked by that fact.

Isla has to be the worst main character ever. She almost (trigger warning...) kills herself a number of times and then constantly blames it on other people. She flees her old life because of misogynistic terrible men only to happily run into the arms of hot misogynistic men!

The writing was juvenile at best which isn't fantastic considering some of the content involved... I'll go read something good now to cleanse my eyes...

In this story we get to meet Isla and her four sexy bear shifters. What I enjoyed most was that Isla had a normal reaction when she finds out the hot guys who rescued her are actually bear shifters. While there is insta-lust it does not automatically morph into insta-love, but instead develop a bit more organically. Sky MacKinnon has definitely created an amazing start to this new series!

Started off well then went downhill

This review contains spoilers

This starts off interesting with a dystopian setting and a runaway. Then we meet the bears and it goes downhill and feels SUPER rushed. I know this is a series but honestly it felt like a serial novella - too rushed and not enough relationship building. One second she sorta likes them then is having sexy time then hates them then loves them? Way too rushed. My head was spinning from one page too the next with all the flip flopping. And I HATED the whole second soul of a bear inside her that is independent and more like a parasite than apart of her. It really ruined the whole book for me. I will not read the next

Fun read! Will def be reading on in the series.
A fun FMC who flees an oppressive life/family/culture makes for a fun story that has that remote/ small-town/ community feel, packs plenty of heat and action, just the right amount of misunderstanding (too much of this overused tactic and I get bored) and an all-around fun world.

MacKinnon is growing on me as a writer.

4 stars.

I listened to Rescued by Bears by Skye MacKinnon on Scribd and I knew of this book and had always wanted to read it but never got to it. I was happy to see all of them are on Scribd and I can listen to my hearts content.

Story:

I thought the concept of the dystopian world was interesting, to go along with the bear shifters (loved how different ones are represented in the harem!!). I thought Isla was strong and had reasonable reactions to what was thrown at her hahaha (I would have been super pissed like she was with the bears!). I loved the different personalities of the guys and am intrigued by them so much I am already listening to book 2! I was a little thrown off by Alice, but I am gonna see how the rest of the series goes because she is so much of an unknown and her not being interested in the others was odd.

I have listened to other books by Skye but I was under the impression this was one of the more heated books, especially with her blurb saying "very steamy scenes". In honesty it's not, but I will hold my judgement a bit until I have finished the series. I understand some authors choose fade to black for a reason, but I honestly didnt expect it so soon in Skye's books and I hope we get to see more of those moments with some of guys who didnt get that opportunity to shine in this one. Like I love heated moments, but I don't expect all sexy scenes will be detailed, especially with RH (some do thats I love those too, but I am not a fan of all fade to black scenes in a book/series). I like a mix of story and steam, but I have a thing with getting the whole kit and caboodle when the MC and her men first go to that level. It's a special moment and if its glossed over it takes away the story for me. So hopefully this is remedied in the other 2 books because I am sad we don't get to see that with some of the fluffy teddy bears 🤣🤣🤣. I would have given this a 4 stars but felt lied to by the blurb and marketing of the book.

Narration:

So I would give Kyo 3.5 stars for her performance. I am on the fence with her, because sometimes I think she is perfect and sometimes I have to up the speed of the audiobook to get to a point where I can stand listening to her. I will say that since she started narrating for some of the RH authors I like she has gotten better, but it took awhile to get there (I couldn't stand her when she did one of Laura Greenwood's books). I thought her accent with some of the guys was goofy but I just went with it. I am not doing to take a lot of this story seriously haha. I do listen to this at 1.5 speed so that helps with the way Kyo breathers/her rendition. I will say I couldn't stand her voice for Alice and I get it, she was trying to show how different her personality is from Isla, but it was a little too much for me.

¿Y ahora qué van a comer?

Okay so first off it's not a bad book. It just feels like it was written by a teenager on Wattpad. Which may be mean...but it's the truth.

I was so excited for this too. I like the idea of different shifters and bears seems so cool. I'm not into cat shifters like jaguars or panthers because I can never get the lame ass were-panthers out of my head from True Blood. Lol!

Anyways. It had all the potential for a really strong interesting story, but it fell flat. Honestly if it had been on kindle unlimited (like it should be) I would have DNFed. But I stupidly bought the whole series.

Isla is poorly defined, like all the characters are. She seems weirdly mature in some areas and horribly childish in a lot of aspects. She may be young, but she is 20 years old, living in a post apocalyptic society, having had been abused by her uncle, and intelligent enough to train as a healer. She should not be this awkward and this immature.

The entire book happens way too fast making each scenario sloppy and uncomfortable to transition to. And her turning into a shifter was super weird. It wasn't flushed out or explained. Her freakout didn't last. Her hurt didn't last. It was way too rushed.

The men are super interesting, but one dimensional. Ran, for example, I would LOVE to get to know his character more, but all we know is he hates to be touched and is quiet. None of them are fully developed characters or gain any development.

Also this is NOT an reverse harem book. The series is, but if you're expecting it in this book you won't get it. In the last scene of the book it moves to become a full RH within the last 2 chapters with spice and it is completely fade to black.

So is it bad, no. But is it detailed and has plot/character development? No. So if you're just looking for a fast fun read without any brain power this is it. If you like some depth to your books, maybe move on.

The story follows Isla, a woman who lives in the little village/town of Salvation Island. She lives a miserable life and ends up running away from, whilst on the run, she runs into four bear shifters, Torben, Finn, Hunn and Ran. They take her in and after she injures herself when she discovers that they're bear shifters (silly silly girl), they take care of her and she travels with them to find Inchbrach.

On the way they meet Arnold and Bertrand, two lovely bear shifters.

I love the dystopian aspect of the book, I love dystopian stories. This story has everything I want, hot shifters who are BEARS!!!! and one is a POLAR BEAR! I LOOOOOVE polar bears. A dystopian storyline and it's RH! What more could you want?!

The characters are absolutely amazing, Isla (love the name) is feisty and I love her inner monologues, especially when she argues with Alis. She's still young and probably a little immature because she makes a couple of stupid ideas, but she's still loveable and it doesn't distract so much from her as a character. She is very well developed. Her reaction to a particular situation is how I imagine a person to react if it was real, however, her action. . . not so much hehe.

The sleuth, all of them I love, especially Torben and Finn. And I've claimed them both. . .they are mine! But so are Hunn and Ran haha
I love the different personalities and love how playful Finn is.

I'm really interested to see how things go with the bears and Alis - and to know a bit more of her background.

I instantly fell for Arnold and Bertrand - they are the perfect couple and the good neighbours type of guys. I hope Skye writes a backstory on these two. One of them in particular, I LOVED and wished it was longer. . . I hope there are more, and longer. I need longer scenes!!

I can't wait for book two, I'm so excited to find out what happens next

Rating: ★★☆☆

Review: This book had a lot of elements I like: dystopian setting, bear shifters, and a strong heroine (at first). Isla lives on an island led by her Uncle who plans to marry her off to the highest bidder. Women are rare and have value. Most of Scotland has become a series of islands since the world's land masses disappeared as the water rose. The water had frozen and Isla was able to drunkenly escape on the night she was given to an evil man. She landed on another island inhabited by several bear shifters.

The good: The beginning, there was potential with the storyline and could have been a good read. A dystopian landscape that was affected by rising water levels and disconnecting larger land masses into smaller islands that have limited communication. The shortage of women and the conflict created among men with the added RH twist could have really been developed. Isla was a fighter, standing up for her friend and then herself in fleeing her environment to find a better life on her own.

The Not So Good: Isla seemed to become very helpless and dumb after discovering her shifters. She was drunk during her big escape, then seemed to wander aimlessly until she bumped into a group of big strong bears that could care for her. Her biggest battle was hypothermia after continuously putting herself in danger and inner dialog was very self absorbed and only what I can describe as basic. Felt like the story ideas ran out of steam and authors started dropping disjointed thoughts together. I'm not even going to touch on the spoilery part, but her later inner dialog is even worse... A strong heroine turned into a whiny self-absorbed drama princess. And the RH part, never really developed either, felt like an afterthought. This series is not a fit for me.

Review: Polar Destiny by Skye MacKinnon. 04/18/2018

When I started this book I didn’t know exactly what age group it was for. At first I thought maybe a children’s book because it read and was wrote with no descriptive words and it even felt like it was narrated by a child. I read on and than said no I think it’s for young adults because the story was heading onto another path. After some fifty pages it startled me because the contents of the story took another turn towards graphic sex scenes. I though to myself…Oh My God this author really drew me in at first but she came across many descriptive words from that point on until the end.

I realize it was fantasy fiction and I know how to skip through a graphic sex scene but not 3/4th’s of the book. Plus, it was poorly written and I had a hard time with a polar bear in bed with Isla than turning a human male and then back again. Isla was being raised by her uncle because her parents died in what they call the big drowning. When she turned twenty her Uncle had arranged a marriage for her. Isla fled and had no plans of where she was going. The land in Scotland was scarce because a massive flood spread over the land and only left Islands for people to live on. The weather was getting colder so a lot of the water was freezing over. Crossing the ice is the path Isla took but it was still dangerous in places that were thin. After a while she sees an Island but she was cold and didn’t think she could make it, Isla passes out on the ice

When she woke she was covered by furs for warmth but surprisingly she was naked. Then she met the four hulking men who found her. The story rushes to the point where she finds out that they are human shifters. They could be human for a short period of time and had no choice but to shift back to their bear forms because it was winter and bears hibernate in the winter. Some how, they captivated her with their charm. I thought from that point on that the book was unreasonably awkward and disappointing

Really a firm 10

So I read and review reverse harem books, a lot! Some are good, some are bad (I can't stand spelling, grammer, or continuity errors), and some are great. This is one of the rare great ones.

The characters are engaging and real. They feel like people you would meet with strengths and weaknesses we can all relate to. The storyline is strong and will draw you in. It includes traces of Greek mythology which don't detract from your attention by being changed to support the story. Some mythos is added to it but the main mythology is still there. I also liked the concept of the dystopian world the author created since it is scientifically possible. (Yes, my biology degree has to be scientifically satisfied with facts to be happy.)

I won't give a synopsis since you can read it but I will say that I am preordering the next book as soon as possible.

One last thing. The only issue I had was that I wish the "hot" scenes were a little more detailed. I like to have enough description to be able to visualize what is going on and most of them were good to a point but then just vague. Think "he kissed her with passion and she laid down to enjoy the feeling" then it cuts to how satisfied they both were the next morning. The quote is not from the book but is to give you an idea of what I mean.

So in conclusion to this abnormally long review I will say again that you will not go wrong with reading this book.

providing an honest review after receiving a complementary copy from the author.

In this books shifter lives were different from anything that I have ever read.

when the person shifts into a bear they are not themselves as a bear there are two beings I guess you would call them sharing one body. They have different names and different personalities in human vs bear forms.
They can have mates in either their human or bear forms. So the human may sleep someone in human form but not when they are in bear form.

The main female character spent way too much time sleeping and running outside and getting cold and wet thus needing to be warmed up by her 4 bear shifters.

All of the human characters in this book were hateful men abusing women for their own pleasure.

The female lead was mated with one of the 4 shifter but allowed to sleep with the other 3 if she wanted too, which she did but not till the last few pages in the book, I wish there had been more detail to the relationships and sex scenes more of them and did she have individual relationships/ sex with each shifter or was it more of a group situation?

I discovered at the end of this book it was the first in a trilogy I did not enjoy this book enough to want to pay to find out what happens in the next two books. the male characters were hot but the female character seemed young and immature and I did not really like her. The story line while new and different was just not interesting enough for me.

'Completeness. I was incomplete and now I'm whole.'

I really enjoyed this book. Good world building. The setting was interesting learning about the Drowning. Isla, like the other women at Salvation Island, don't have much freedom or choice in their lives. Her uncle forces her to marry a man who'd beaten and raped her friend who was forced to marry him before she helped her escape. Getting drunk on her wedding day, she manages to slip away from everyone and walks across the frozen ice to escape to another island- nearly dying in the process. She is taken in by what seem like good and friendly men... who are secretly bear shifters- a dwindling species trying to find their own. (I LOVED that each bear was a different type!)

The story was interesting and I enjoyed seeing her relationship develop with them; seeing her come into her own after the strict rules she was forced to follow for so many years.

I listened to this audiobook narrated by Kyo Sija. I liked her accent. Her voices for the guys were okay. I couldn't really tell them apart. I would never have guessed the accent was supposed to be Scottish. I liked the way it sounded more in her female voice more than the males.

Overall: 4 stars
Performance: 3 stars
Story: 4 stars

Polar Bear Shifter Reverse Harem!!!!!
“I've got a polar bear in my bed. Didn't think I'd ever get to say that. A very warm, soft, cosy polar bear.

Well I chose to read this because I love reading anything about bears. Bear Shifters are intriguing and so, it was if it had been written for me personally as it was also set in Scotland which I love so much. Skye Mackinnon is a very talented author with a powerful vocabulary that she uses to enhance her writing. Isla is to be married off by her vile uncle [who does he think he is for heavens sake??] to an equally unpleasant man. But Isla is a feisty young woman who refuses to be manipulated and so she escapes and is found by four hulking strong men who are absolutely gorgeous and seem to be rather keen on her too - which is even better! They also don't seem to like wearing clothes much? But Isla isn't going to complain, now is she? This is my first book by Sky McKinnon and I'm really impressed with the way she uses language to bring to life her fantastic characters. I'm ordering book 2 and hope it's published soon!I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED
