Fortuna Sworn #2

Restless Slumber

Rate this book
"Before I met you, I thought Nightmares were creatures of pain and darkness. Why, then, are you constantly seeking freedom and light?"

Fortuna's entire life has changed.

She has no idea how to balance her new responsibilities and who she used to be. There are hundreds of faeries in her head, her brother seems to have lost touch with reality, and a werewolf won't leave her side. Maybe the utter lack of control is why her abilities seem to be changing, as well.

Then there's Collith. Enigmatic, beautiful, and infuriating. Not only a king of the faeries she despises so much, but also her mate. His gentle pursuit causes confusion in her normally unwavering relationship with Oliver.

As a result of it all, Fortuna now finds herself surrounded by new enemies and ones from the past. The question isn't whether she is strong enough to make change in such a corrupt court.

It's whether she will survive long enough to do it.

Well damn, let me tell you... that ending ripped my heart out and then just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, it really went there.

Honestly, I am SO in love with all of the characters in this series. Fortuna is a powerhouse and definitely radiates big Taurus energy. The sexual tension and angst ramps up between all characters in this book and you know that is a BIG reason why I love this series.

I absolutely adored (even though it hurts) the ending of this one and I'm both excited and terrified to see what happens in the third instalment because oh boy, there are going to be some major repercussions and consequences.

“If your throne is made from the bones of those you stepped on to get there, don’t be surprised when their ghosts come knocking at the door.

Restless Slumber picks up right where ends. Fortuna is traveling back and forth between the court and the human world, allowing us to see a little bit of the Unseelie court and the cold faes, but also to meet new characters as they get entangled in Fortuna’s not-so-restful life. She needs to care for her brother (as she is still trying to regain his trust and to be forgiven) and for Finn the werewolf, to figure out how she feels about Collith, to escape an angry pack of Werewolves, to control her growing powers, and to keep control of her court while trying to remain sane and keep everyone alive through it all.

The pace is a little slower at the beginning of the book, but it makes sense since we are now dealing with characters who have traumas, are grieving and who need to adapt to a completely different life. It also allows Fortuna and Damon to return to their home and try to heal from what happened in the Unseelie Court. It does not take too long for the action to begin again and for us to get immersed in the dark atmosphere that was so good in the first book.

I have to say though that at times, I was not sure of the direction of the book. Don't get me wrong, it was a great read and it kept me entertained, but the stakes were definitely not as high as in the first book, and sometimes I was not even sure what the endgame was. What was Fortuna's goals or plans for the future? It seemed like she just breezed through life and dealt with threats as they were thrown into her path, but she had no bigger plan besides surviving.

“Holding onto anger is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die.

Fortuna is often impulsive and ruthless, and she would do anything to protect those she loves. I have to say though that sometimes she was annoying me with her carelessness and her tendency to act without thinking about the consequences. Even Fortuna admitted that it was an issue But at the same time, it’s refreshing to have a flawed main character who is driven by anger and revenge at times. Thankfully she had Collith to keep her in line, or the death toll would have been higher than it is. She also gets more powerful and even badasser (yes, badasser is now a word) than before and even though some of her choices annoyed me, I love her as the main character. I love every character in this series, even the secondary characters.

For a few seconds, I could only stand there and stare at the scene before me. I was about to get into a small vehicle with two faerie monarchs, a brother who loathed me, and a traumatized werewolf. It seemed like a lethal combination of ingredients that was sure to explode in my face.
Lyari moved so she stood beside me. “You realize that vehicle has become a ticking bomb, yes? she remarked.

This book is full of magic, action, and life-or-death situations, with a side of cute conversations and sexual tension between Fortuna and Collith. Their relationship is not easy or simple, but that is what makes it good. It’s a game of push and pull between them, and there is an undeniable sexual tension between them, but they don’t rush into anything, and I love the slow burn between them (I have to say though that I love Laurie more than Collith #TeamLaurie). There are also funny moments and some cute and heartwarming moments to balance all the action and darker vibe.

The big wolf instantly dropped to his knees, gulping in huge breaths of air.
I smirked down at him. “Sorry. Just standard procedure.
“It’s times like this I wish I’d packed an engagement ring. Laurie remarked. Everyone ignored him.

“Why does everything have to be a debate with you? Laurie countered, walking backward toward the dance floor. “Just grind on me, damn it.

Oh, Laurie.
I love him so much.
I am also happy that he is still present in this book and even has a bigger role in the story, I like what he brings to the story and the relationships between different sets of characters. Also, I can't have enough of his sarcastic replies and his nonchalance. He’s my favorite character in this series without hesitation.

“Does he have an ‘off button? Lyari demanded.
Laurie quirked a brow at her. “Should a request for silence pass Queen Fortuna’s lips, I’ll never speak another word. After all, I’ve seen her naked. It’s impossible to deny her after such a magnificent experience.
Collith stiffened.
I almost slammed on the brakes.

“What makes you so sure I didn’t have her permission? he asked silkily.
Collith’s grip tightened. “Did she say the words? he growled.
To this, Laurie quirked a brow. “Did I say the words when you fucked me?
“Okay. Wow. You know, I think you’ve both made your point. I crossed the space and lodged myself between the two males, flattening my palms against their chests to use as leverage.

The way Laurie is always trying to get a reaction out of Collith, and how at the same time he is fiercely protective of him is kind of sweet, and I am so intrigued by their shared past. I need to know more about what happened between them. Laurie obviously loves Collith, and Collith does not just feel anger and resentment towards Laurie, that’s for sure, even though he tries hard to hide his feelings. I would not mind them sharing Fortuna and ending up in a throuple, that’s for sure.

And that shocking ending! Oh my... I can’t wait to read the next book even though I already read it before, because I need the angst. I love this series so much!

“Fear is a seed, my love. It can grow from pain or anger or it can grow from something else. Love. Hope. You are not a monster, Fortuna Sworn. Concentrate on the good, take it into you, and let the rest go.

Damn! These books are rough…author puts triggers in blurb. I’m tiptoeing through them

I love these books though, so far anyway. There are many cringe moments but nothing any different from things you would see in Game Of Thrones or something.

I’m nervous to make my way through the next two and then future books. I soooo want to go buy the paperbacks but I have to wait for now.

The covers are beautiful. The books are awesome and different and rough. And I love them!

PS-That freaking ending 😬

Holy shit. I haven’t slept in three days thanks to this book.

BECAUSE, GIRL. THE SLOW BURN.
THE
SLOW
BURN

Everything kicks up 87 notches in this sequel to Fortuna Sworn. I couldn’t put it down. This thing is action packed.

Particularly the Unseelie King and Queen’s developing romance.

My face while reading any scene with her and Collith: 😏😏😏😏😏😏😏😏

I did find myself questioning just how powerful Collith could actually be because of events in the first book and that did continue here, but it didn’t bother me. He’s a guarded character who is controlled by fear. It makes sense why he would be hesitant to show his strength. It’s fun watching Fortuna try to figure out what’s going on inside his head (fun for me too because hell if I know what he’s thinking).

Our Unseelie Queen, Fortuna, is a badass. A dangerously impulsive badass, but a badass nonetheless. Proceed, homegirl.

Laurie’s A+ witty commentary was always welcome. Never enough of that. His banter with Fortuna was also excellent. Also enjoy when he trolls Collith.

2.25 stars, a *slight* improvement.

Currently on a hiatus bc life is hitting too hard lately, but will (hopefully) still be reading to escape and posting my ratings as I go.

This book has NO direction, barely any plot, but I found it slightly better than book 1? And by “slightly I mean book 1 was the plastic, 25¢ gas station vending machine ring, and this one might be the 50¢ version. Characters are thrown in with no purpose, they chaotically travel all over the place, and then people are offed for seemingly only the shock factor.

Each book in the series grows by 100 pages, and I am already cringing thinking of the 500 page book 3 and how it’ll be 100 more pages of no direction 😵‍

Review now posted 1/3/20

This picks off exactly where the last one ended. And I read it avidly and greedily like a starved person. If you haven't read the first one, be warned this review contains spoilers for it.

description

I loved being back in in Fortuna's world and looked forward to seeing what she would do with her new position as Queen. I also wanted to find answers for all the questions I had during the first one. All the things that niggled and all the potential suitors. K.J. Sutton sure dolls out information parsimoniously. I didn't get near as much as my greedy readers heart wanted. I still don't know who Fortuna will end up with. Or who I want her to end up with. Be warned there's a ton of grey in her world and love life.

description

After she rescues her brainwashed brother she runs out of the Unseelie Court as fast as she can. In her effort to resume any kind of normal and try to heal him and her werewolf, she turns her back on the faerie world, only returning when she has to. At the same time growing closer to Collith who drops everything continually to help her. And distancing herself from Oliver which damn near broke my heart. But when you have too many balls in the air, you're bound to drop some eventually and when Fortuna does the consequences are not pretty.

description

K.J.Suttons writing really pulled me in and I was in it's clutches so tight I couldn't breathe. I could not put the book down, it had such a strong pull on me, I stayed up until 3 am to finish it. And then I was so frigging upset and destroyed by reading that last 5% that I couldn't sleep. Unfortunately for me, the author hit on two of my major pet peeves. She not only hit them but stomped on them and then did a little wiggle on the top too. The end took a turn that I'm frankly very averse to. It was like watching a collision. I was horrified but I couldn't stop reading.

I'm still upset almost a day later. I loved the writing and the plot. It might not have given me the info I wanted on a platter but it was captivating nevertheless. Fortuna's progression was also unexpected but fit within her character. I was just mortally wounded by the end. I'm sure there's a third book coming where Fortuna will have to deal with everything and I'm dying to read what comes next even if I hated that ending. What can I say, I'm a glutton for punishment..

And for comic relief:

I think KJ Sutton broke me!!!!

I literally can’t with that ending. CAN’T. I don’t know if my heart is ready to see the aftermath of that trauma. I need more happy moments. I know it’s a dark romance but shit. Second, I want to dick punch Laurie. He is a terrible friend to both Collith and Fortuna.

I do loved all the grey morality and twists throughout this story. And the romance. Love. It. I'm obsessed with not only the romantic relationships the but friendships as well. We need more Finn and Damon in the third book. They better fucking fix Collith. He is just a dream, so perfectly wonderful, brave and loyal a literal prince (king) charming. He is so perfect for Fortuna. The ending of this book is brutal and absolutely heartbreaking in multiple ways.

Goddess above I’m so sad

I was sent a copy of this book for review. This in no way influences my opinion.

My soul is destroyed and honestly, I'm not even mad about it.

Fortuna Sworn very quickly became a new favourite book of mine, and I wonder where it would go from there. I needn't have given it a thought, because this book just went beyond my expectations.

Following directly on from the first book, we set off to a slower start as we navigate a whole host of new relationships and situations following recent events. There was a noticeable difference in pace, though I honestly was glad for it, as I felt that time built a much-needed bridge between the events of book one and two. If it has glazed by any quicker, I would've had my doubts. Instead, we get to see the characters try to live with trauma, deal with mental health problems, and navigate rocky relationships - something I massively appreciate seeing, as trauma and grief are topics often glazed over in fantasy books. The character development was subtle yet integral, and built a really solid foundation to the plot line.

But it doesn't take long for the events of the previous book to continue in this one, and the full force of the dark atmosphere was felt once again. One noticeable addition, however, was the more even balance between light and dark moments. While the story itself is dramatic, intense, something to keep your heart in your mouth, there were also humorous moments where characters clash in entertaining ways, or tiny pockets of happy moments to cling on to. With the earlier mentioned development in characters and specifically their relationships, all these small moments are very much felt, and it all ultimately builds into this story you can't escape from.

While this is a quick moving book full of a whole host of supernatural beings, dramatic scenes, and feisty comebacks, there's a lot of meaning underlying the relationships between characters too. It really hits hard when you read some of the events in this book, because you know how one act is actually valued so much more to one particular character over others. Or you see tiny signals that are capable of sending entire conversations between characters in one moment. This is largely why the events towards the end felt like an absolute gut punch to me - especially now that we know Fortuna and for better or for worse, we're on her side. I'm very much a fan of her as a main character, and that alone make this book one hell of a ride.

I could talk about this book all day. I could go on about how I usually dislike urban settings in fantasy books yet actually love it in this series, or how I sped through half the book in a couple hours because I couldn't put it down. But this review is probably already long enough, so I'll just say this; I am already so invested in this series. I cannot wait for the next book. I have such high hopes, knowing that we already have witnessed the after-effects of trauma and so we'll likely see that continue in book three. But also seeing a whole cast of characters that form this weirdly endearing - yet semi-insufferable - group dynamic that is just so entertaining to read about. With the world and plot expansion we've already seen in books one and two alone, I'm beyond excited to see where we end up with this series.

This book continues where we left off previously and I was hoping maybe for some answers especially concerning dream Ollie and also Collith's icy Assasin-ex lover down in his dungeons (forget her name).
But alas the mystery only deepens here and more questions have now arisen to join them.
So Fortuna now Queen of the Unseelie is back in the human world trying to adjust to her new reality.
She's also packing some new companions: the Seelie king Laurie is her new bestie, she has a constant shadow in her new protective werewolf rescue, her reluctant right hand and bodyguard Lyari hates her as does her brother and somethings definitely off with the dreamscape and Ollie.
Regarding Fortuna's relationship with Collith it is evolving into something much more tangible, becoming deeper and more intense, there bond growing and strengthening the more they lay themselves open and let down there natural guard.
I also felt that here we got a lot more of an insight into just who and what Collith is and how he ultimately ticks.
we also get some insight into his and Laurie's current dynamic and just what went down between them to cause their initial rift.
I am also desperate to know just who and what Ollie is and where he actually comes into things as I do think there is some deeper significance and agenda ultimately at play here.
My heart was also hurting so bad for his pain and loss with Fortuna, it was just so sad how desperate he was to hold onto any small part of her.
I did feel that this had a slightly different vibe to its predecessor almost like all the players were being brought onto the board and placed strategically for some hidden purpose yet to occur.
This one really was action-packed throughout and that finale my god!!! my nerves are on edge and my heart well I think its shattered into a million pieces for Collith and Fortuna and where they are now at.
I am so very worried about the repercussions and consequences most likely heading there way.
Fortuna is evolving as a queen but also as an individual but her rashness and impulsiveness and the way she doesn't always think her actions through may be her greatest weakness.
Collith helps counterbalance that to an extent and they really are polar opposites of each other which also is what makes them such a great fit together.
Each bringing something to the board the other lacks somewhat.
Don't know how I'm going to wait until book three is out as its all the way into December it seems aeons away but needs must, I will be eagerly anticipating its release.
This is a fantastic urban fantasy series that I highly recommend, massive thumbs up from me.

You know that bittersweet feeling you get after finishing a book? The love for its story and characters and the pride that you finished it, combined with the sad reality that it’s over? I was in the final stretch of this book and thought Hey, won’t it be nice to end the day by finishing a book? In the case of Restless Slumber, no, no it was not nice.

The ending of this book is brutal and absolutely heartbreaking in multiple ways. It’s been clear since book one how much K.J. Sutton enjoys tormenting her characters, but the finale of this book takes it to a whole new level. I felt shocked, horrified, and sad that Fortuna had to make the choices she did. Honestly, I didn’t love this ending or that the plot took this direction, especially because it was such a graphic scene; however I’m interested to see the ramifications of this twist and how it will impact Fortuna throughout the remainder of the series. I’d highly recommend checking out the trigger warning at the end of this review or posted by other reviewers before picking up this book/series. It’s definitely an adult fantasy and it doesn’t hold any punches.

I love this series cast of characters, which only grew to include more memorable and intriguing members in this book.
Fortuna is a fantastic narrator and I enjoyed seeing her grow in her relationships and her abilities. I have a soft spot for Damon and also really like Lyari and Finn. I’m still not 100% sure how I feel about Oliver (tbh his storyline doesn’t really interest me, plus I’m still not convinced he won’t turn out to be a villain), and overall I wasn’t a fan of the love square. For romance lovers there’s definitely a slow burn between Fortuna and Collith, but by the end it was a bit too slow for me. That doesn’t mean the sexual tension between them wasn’t amazing, though!

Regarding the plot, this book went in the exact opposite direction I thought it would. This wasn’t a bad thing at all, just surprising given the ending of book one. Instead of watching Fortuna navigate her new role as queen of the Unseelie Court, this book takes place above the surface as Fortuna tries to care for her brother while figuring out how to combine her new life with the one she left behind in Granby. At times the plot felt a bit all over the place and it seemed like Sutton wasn’t quite sure which characters and elements she wanted the reader to focus on. This made my attention wane a bit towards the end because my brain felt scrambled, but I ultimately ended up enjoying it and can’t wait to see how the world above the surface and the one below will interact in the future.

Lastly, Restless Slumber introduces a variety of spooky creatures that inhabit Fortuna’s universe, including werewolves, zombies, sirens, vampires, and witches to make it a fantastic October read. Fans of dark urban fantasy and faerie stories alike will enjoy this series, and I’m so excited it will include six books total. comes out in December, and I can’t wait to follow the rest of Fortuna’s journey.

TW/CW: sexual assault/rape (on page), violence, mention of suicide, parent death (in flashbacks/memories)

Thank you to author K.J. Sutton for reaching out and providing an ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

3.75 restless STARS ★★★✬
This series is for you if you'd consider yourself a fairy enthusiast who likes all sorts of creatures in their plots. You should also not be opposed to the possibility of several love interests. If cliffhangers are a no go for you I'm afraid you won't like this series.

Preface.
I feel terrible. I read this 10 days ago and vowed to review in a timely manner. But then the whole kidney/bladder shit kicked in and I somehow forgot to pick up where I left off, instead only reviewing those I finished after. I'm still sure my feelings about this book haven't changed.

Overall.
This series got one hell of an upgrade with the second instalment. Restless Slumber pretty much takes off where Fortuna Sworn left us with a cliffhanger and drags deeper into this vortex of action, fight scenes, mystery and riddles.

Although I absolutely enjoyed my time, I really want this series to pick up even more. I feel like the Fortuna Sworn books could be truly epic. At the moment, however, something just doesn’t quite make the break for me. There are a bit too many open endings for my taste. Some question marks here and there are fine and add to the suspense, but too many loose strands just make this a bit too messy. We don't know about Oliver, Fortuna's feelings for her 3 love interests are a best guess for the reader, and I also feel like we're meandering around for the real mission that lies ahead, which wasn't hinted at yet...

KJ also told me we won’t learn about Oliver until book 5? I am sorry? I can't even. I need to know. There are too many open questions. There better be some resolutions in book 3 and 4 or else I’ll have to speak to the manager, I’m afraid.

That ending was phenomenal. I can't even?! I want answers, now.

What’s happening.
‘You are not a monster, Fortuna Sworn

But how far can you push the line between good and bad until you fail to recognize yourself? When are the greys black - irreversibly so? Facing danger may cause you to lose a part of yourself.

While Fortuna tries to balance her lives at court and in the human world, she still has to figure out whether she may ever be able to trust Collith in the way he desires her to without losing what she has left of Oliver, her one true stable friend.

._. The first book wasn’t bad but the second book?! First of all I do not like Fortuna

1. She’s really selfish
2. I have a hard time believing that in all millennia she was the only person to survive the trials especially given how easily she passed them.
3. She’s a HORRIBLE ‘queen she’s NEVER there, she doesn’t give two fricks about the people she’s ruling and only goes to court when she fancies to which is basically never and yet people still think she’s a good ruler.
4. The other characters try to force down our throats how kind, and nice she is but she overreacts to everything even AFTER people warn her beforehand to be chill she isn’t.
5. Even when she ‘helps people it’s selfish and only goes so far as she wants it to.
6. The author isn’t slick... that one tribunal with the baby... she took that parable RIGHT out of the bible... King David was in THAT EXACT SITUATION. are you telling me fallen angels don’t read the mf bible? Then they have the audacity to say “incredible “very wise as if it wasn’t PLAGIARIZED???? Again fallen angels haven’t read the bible?!?! If they weren’t fallen angels I’d be like OK, but they are, and there is no way atleast one of them isn’t familiar with that bible story. 😤
7. I have a hard time believing that TWO fae kings would lust after her, who aside from being a nightmare has no discernible personality and suffers from the above 6 points :/

Yeah so 2.5 ⭐️ ‘s I didn’t finish it cause I liked it, I finished it to meet my reading challenge.

I feel very conflicted with what I should feel about this book. On one hand, it was great especially with that amazing writing style that it was hard to put down, while on the other hand, there were some inconsistency that I can't ignore and the plot being somewhat all over the place.

The plot is definitely not what I expected. I was thinking that Fortuna would struggle in dealing with the court and assassination attempts by the Fae but she spends 95% of the book aboveground dealing with the werewolves and the people she knows in the human world. The vibe I was getting from the sypnosis is different than what actually happened in the book that the events, to me, should have happened in the next book or after rather than in this second book. The werewolves felt a bit out of place for me as well as who was behind Damon's problem was unexpected and unnecessary.
Regardless of me not finding them fitting, the suspense I got from the situations kept me reading non-stop to see how it ended. I also like how the preface is a shocking scene that happens later because it makes me excited to read faster and get to the part.

I guess the book is too different from my expectations but the whole romance angst was right up my alley until Fortuna ruins it by blaming Collith about how she feels. I get not admitting how she feels and evading it but not bring up every single bad thing he did and forgetting her own mistakes. Don't get me started on how Fortuna feels horny over everything, too too horny! Everyone be putting there hands on her cooch and she wouldn't be complaining despite her saying she doesn't want to commit adultery. 👀

The book is such a tease with the "now isn't the time to think more about it or ask questions." Other times Fortuna could have asked and got answers but she awkwardly was silent or it jumped to the next chapter and didn't pick off from the previous one. Like what was Fortuna's reaction when Laurie told her who caused Collith's scar? It was never mentioned again.

Relationships are purposely murky between Collith, Fortuna and Oliver. Collith and Fortuna keeps going back and forth with their relationship, never constant until the end. Oliver is purposely appearing less and less but I wanted more out of it rather than it being left off without a conclusion. I was expecting some explanation as to how Fortuna could bring over some stuff in the Dreamland but there was nothing.

Lastly, I want to mention some major inconsistency to me. Like why did Fortuna go to the twin and did what she did out of nowhere? Is her truck broken or not? Is Savannah and Matthew ever going to get a clear conclusion rather than a dismissal explanation? I thought the Fae could feel an idea about Collith so why didn't they notice what happened in the end? Was the demon situation at the end really necessary? (because I hated it completely).

In conclusion, despite me not feeling like this should be what the second book is about, I really enjoyed reading through it because the author's writing style is phenomenal! I already want to read the next book just so I could be in that world again. I kinda spoiled for myself about the other books because I didn't think there'd be a sypnosis ready and now I can't wait 😭💔

Thank you, K. J. Sutton for reaching out to me and giving me a copy of this book for an honest review.

This is such a unique fantasy series. With characters ever bit as interesting as the powers and secrets they possess. It is one action packed ride that I enjoyed every single page of and while I enjoyed book one of this series, I wasn't quite prepared for how much I would love book two.

It was even more imaginative, action filled and numerous times throughout, kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.

It was darker and richer and just...so much more.

The explosive ending was so hard to take and I so was not prepared for it all. It's going to make the wait for book three, even harder than it already was going to be.

I truly can not wait for more, I need to see where Fortuna goes next!

Going into the second book, I can say that the author has kept that originality to the series. This is so different from anything I've read. I'm invested in these characters, mainly Fortuna. I'm also so unsure of how I'm going to feel when this series is all said and done. This is going to be one of those series that could turn direction at any moment.

What I'm loving about this series so far, is Fortuna. She's that underdog character that has more spine and gumption than the most powerful of species represented in this series. I find myself surprised when her weakness makes an appearance and she can't overcome an obstacle.

This book has a dark flavor to it. I find myself feeling like Fortuna and wanting to step into light and get rid of that darkness that seems to pull on her constantly. It really has me riveted to what is going to happen next.

What I seem to struggle with more so far, is the romance aspect of this series. It's there. There is just enough doubt to who is Fortuna's real hero. Personally, I prefer one to stand out from the start. That's part of the reason I am nervous about how everything will come to an end. It does look like we have many more books to come before we get there.

Overall, my feelings after book two is that this is a unique and compelling fantasy series that will grab you right from the start, and it holds your attention. It's not predictable and you will be left constantly wondering what will happen next. I'm looking forward to what is to come.

This was such a mess.

Restless Slumber was absolutely riddled with grammatical errors, plot inconsistencies, and meandering meaningless plot points. The book desperately needed editing, and whilst I realise this is a self-published work, this is without a doubt the sloppiest book I've ever read to the point that it makes you wonder whether the author actually read through it themselves.

I know that K.J. Sutton is capable of producing high quality work, as is evidenced by the first book in this series, Fortuna Sworn. I wonder what went wrong.

I'm absolutely mind-boggled by the 5 star reviews on this book and it's actually made me re-think which reviewers (or booktubers) I let influence what I read.

And don't even get me started on that scene at the end. Genuinely disgusted by how virginity and sexual assault was so gratuitously used as a useless plot point. And even that scene that went into way too much unneeded explicit detail had plot inconsistencies! If you're going to use sexual assault so flippantly and irresponsibly at least read through what you're putting your readers through.

Safe to say I won't be continuing the series despite my enjoyment of the first book.

"Heres what i do know" , oliver murmured finally , his drowsy face raised towards the heavens. "That the first thing we do on a dark night is look up . Always "

I'm glad I held on because the more I read the better it gets. The book is no longer predictable or 'recycled' , its pretty good but once again I sense even more potential in the next books . I love Fortuna's character , with her badassary and her sarcasm , Laurie's taunting and teasing is fun and Collith - I like how were getting to know more about him gradually . Fortuna and Colith shared such cute moments and I loved how their relationship actually develops and evolves .Sutton leaves nothing behind , every time I forgot about something or was about to remember something that was left unfinished she reintroduce it and I couldn't help but appreciate it . However there was a lot of travelling here and it could get a lil confusing or disconcerting. All the themes felt realistic here with people like Damon and other side characters . This woman is a boss with her cliffhangers because WHATTTTTT !???? will most definitely be reading all books in this series

I truly don't know who K.J. Sutton enjoys making suffer more...her characters or us readers? But I'm 100% here for all of it. At this point it's pretty safe to say I'm pretty obsessed with this series.

There was so much packed into this sequel and things got much darker than the first book making this a truly wild ride where I feared for every character I loved on basically every single page. Plus, I'm absolutely living for all of the paranormal creatures in this book. We're talking witches, nightmares, fae, werewolves, necromancers, sirens, demons, even zombies! I mean come on, my paranormal loving heart ate this shit up. And let's not forget the romance, shall we? Because I am so here for the slow burn between Collith and Fortuna and I can't wait for more of it in the next book.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll just crawl under a rock and cry until the next book comes out in December.

Unlike the first book, this one kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through, I absolutely loved it!

Action, spice, plot, badass characters, heartbreak, you name it this book had everything I wanted and more.

That ending tore my heart out and I honestly feel empty but it's fine cause I'm going to go binge read the next book right away!

I love all the characters in this story, they have my heart in their hands, they are all so complex and so real, I literally love them so much uuugh

Well, coming to the book Restless Slumber is the sequel to the Fortuna Sworn. It’s a new adult urban fantasy series that has twisted and wicked fae. I thought that I would love it even more than Fortuna Sworn, but sadly this left me with mixed feelings even though, overall it was better than fortuna sworn. It’s not a bad read. I did enjoyed the overall story but I just had few issues that made me not loving it completely.

━━ ◦━━━

I had a love/hate relationship with Fortuna in this book. On the one hand, I loved her strength and courage, I loved her power and the creativity that it created, the way it grew and transformed into something really dark. But on the other hand, I didn’t like that her impulsive nature got her into so many problems, in addition to her distrust and incessant indecision when it came to trusting Collith.

Collith also deals with trauma, and he struggles to communicate for much of the novel. There were times when I felt so bad for him and other times when I wanted to shake some sense into him. The same goes for Laurie.

I also liked Laurie much more in this sequel. In fact, I was nostly looking forward to him. He becomes much more open, more daring and playful. His carefree and funny personality made me love him

Finally, we have Finn the werewolf, who is very mysterious and I feel that he has a lot of secrets. I love his loyalty to Fortuna and I’m very curious about him. I have a soft spot for Damon and also really like Lyari and Finn.

i need to talk about the romance. First, we did not resolve the love triangle... at least, I don't think we did? Second, I don't know if I ship Collith and Fortuna anymore and this makes me really sad.The romance that is, but also isn’t! Strong as she may be, Fortuna just can’t seem to break down that wall for Collith. And to be honest, who can blame her?!

Collith isn’t the only love interest in Fortuna’s life. There is Laurie, the Seelie King who is both slightly irritating but also swoon-worthy(YES😏), who keeps flirting with Fortuna even though I wish he would just BACK OFF. But then…there’s Ollie. I honestly don't know what to think about him, mainly because i don't know what role he plays in this series and fortuna's life. fortuna is having all her moment with all this boys and it's annoying.🙂You need to choose soon girl.

I’m still not 100% sure how I feel about Oliver (tbh his storyline doesn’t really interest me, plus I’m still not convinced he won’t turn out to be a villain), and overall I wasn’t a fan of the love square. For romance lovers there’s definitely a slow burn between Fortuna and Collith, but it's just a little meh for me.

━━ ◦━━━

When I had only about 70 pages left, I started wondering “So what’s the plot of this book? War with werewolves, Damon’s recovery, or is it mainly about giving the reader background information?. At times the plot felt a bit all over the place and it seemed like Sutton wasn’t quite sure which characters and elements she wanted the reader to focus on. This made my attention wane a bit towards the end because my brain felt scrambled,

so as far as the ending,

Fortuna is traumatized by what happened at the end of Restless Slumber and is going through a very dark time. Her life is in turmoil and constant danger, she is riddled with guilt and fear, and she is burdened with ruling the Unseelie Court.

━━ ◦━━━

Lastly, Restless Slumber introduces a variety of spooky creatures that inhabit Fortuna’s universe, including werewolves, zombies, sirens, vampires, and witches to make it a fantastic October read. Fans of dark urban fantasy and faerie stories alike will enjoy this series, and I’m so excited it will include six books total.

I....don't know how I feel about that particular thing that happened in the second to last chapter. If an author has to result to that...to make me feel more convinced about the main characters love for the love interest..then there is a big problem in my opinion. It did not need to be in this book. I'm trying to be as vague as possible but if you know, you know.

3.5 Stars

While I enjoyed this follow up, I felt the it lacked the same punch that the first one had. Don't get me wrong, there were some moments in here that I just loved and moments that broke my heart, but I felt that this book lacked that umph.

We have Fortuna, who is struggling to accept her title of Queen and also struggling to reconnect with her brother. While the Fortuna of book one was steadfast and smart, this Fortuna felt very flightly and quick to jump the gun without thinking. It was such a 180 from her that I, myself, struggled to really connect with her. There were a lot of parts that felt out of place and/or forced, and it was those scenes that kind of took me out of the book and threw the pacing off.

I will, however, forever love the balance between the Unseelie King and the Seelie King. While I don't really trust either one, they fascinate me and make me want more of them. Also, their relationship is just so intriguing.

I feel like this was mostly a set up book, getting us ready for the next steps in Fortuna's story. And than ending...man, never saw that coming and I'm excited to see what's in store for this because I really do like the core story.

I was curious to see if KJ Sutton could keep up the momentum in after that superb intro into Fortuna's story in . She definitely managed to keep me on my toes in this as Fortuna did everything OPPOSITE of what I thought she would do. And because of that, book one is still my favorite of the series so far.Without giving to much away, Fortuna let her new position of power go to her head. Did some of the decisions she made have sound reasoning behind it? Absolutely. Did I, personally, think that just because she could do it meant she should do it? No. She came across a tad ruthless and overly resentful. But, by creating a monster out of Fortuna, we got to see a softer side of my favorite character - Collith. (Authors always have a reason behind their madness, right?!)

Fortuna wasn't completely drunk on her new power though. Her character goes through some major development and, by the end of the book, she comes out stronger than ever. She is definitely one of my favorite paranormal heroines as she makes her own decisions. She doesn't rely on anyone. She is a bad bish. And boy, do I love her for it! Restless Slumber is such a great book to escape reality with for a little while. And I say a little while because, while this book is 454 pages, you will want to binge it in one day. Whether you decide to put all your adult duties aside and spend the day on the couch glued to your kindle or stay up ridiculously late in bed just knowing that you will be more of a zombie than a human being the next day - you will have to try to finish this in one sitting.

Beware that this book does end on a slight cliffhanger. And with book three not coming to us until the winter of 2020, you will have joined the few of us that are impatiently waiting on the next installment.

4 Stars!

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest opinion*

An excellent sequel to an exciting new series. Fortuna Sworn is a great addition to an echelon of kick-ass women of fantasy and I am lucky to be one of the few first readers to meet her.

The world Sutton introduced in book one is growing and expanding, maturing. New allies, new foes, new creatures and I for one can't get enough. This is the one to watch read.

“What do you fear, faerie?

description

“The lights of anger and resentment in their eyes gave way to pain and terror. Screams, cries, and moans filled the room, more lovely than a string quartet.

Where…do I even begin?

This book has ravaged my soul. Ripped my barely there black heart from it’s cobwebbed, rock bottom hole in the rubble of my chest, and left me aching like a widow at a love parade. I am shock. I am devastation. I am wondering how I didn’t see this coming, what with HB stabbing me in the back with Wicked King last year, and me assuming Kelsey Sutton would only want to bring a smile to my face…instead of this contorted expression of betrayal and deeply sadistic thrill that is now etched into my features.

Well done, Kelsey.

description

Fortuna Sworn has just been crowned the Unseelie Queen, rescued her brother Damon, and returned to life above ground. But try as she might, she can’t escape her new duties or the faeries she is now bound to. And with her relationship to Collith, her mate and the Unseelie King, shifting from loathing to something…more, she can’t help but revel in this newfound power. But Fortuna’s ruthless decisions that helped get her on the throne are coming back three-fold, and there are threats at every turn. Unsure if she can finally trust the mate that she has bound herself to, and suspicious of the motives behind the Seelie King’s kindness, Fortuna is forced to do confront everything that makes a Nightmare Fear.

“Nothing had been real and then with no warning, everything was.

description

There is SO much happening in this sequel, I hardly know where to begin. Restless Slumber is packed with magic, supernatural creatures, betrayal, murder, lust, secrets, blindsides and anything and everything that could make you want to weep with unhinged joy. Gone is the ethereal and mystifying tale about a woman rescuing her brother and marrying a Fae king. This book is DARK. It’s raw, it’s unapologetic and it gets right in your face forcing you to dismiss every sense of morality that you so desperately cling to. There are NO RULES in this dark fantasy, but don’t worry, you won’t even miss them.

Restless Slumber is W–I–L–D. There are constant assassination attempts, eloquently phrased sentences spoken to entrap someone, blindly made deals in secluded areas, secrets woven into webs of deceit, and completely OUT OF NOWHERE blindsides that will make you want to scream. There are witches, werewolves, sirens, vampires and goblins. There’s necromancy that brings a slew of corpses after Fortuna, epic battle scenes that pit supernatural creatures against one another, and moments where you question if you’d actually want to be dragged into the forest by a faerie. Because these aren’t the sweet and mystical beings that YA Fantasy likes to portray them as.

The Fallen in this book are brutality at it’s finest and beauty as it’s darkest.

description

Speaking of brutal, let’s talk about our dark Queen Fortuna.

“Then, once they were all crowded within my skull, I released the creature living inside me. The creature that I’d denied too long, too often.

𲹰.

description

If you guys thought Celaena Sardothien was a sassy badass who didn’t give one Fae Fuck, you need to rethink what recklessness in it’s most stunning form looks like. Fortuna, is the literal definition of a Queen. She has no mercy, loves the thrill of shoving a nightmare down someone’s throat, and has a sharp tongue that would leave anyone shaking. She is brash, unrelenting and unapologetic for the things she does. She doesn’t care if anyone likes her or is on her side. She doesn’t need someone in her corner rooting for her and holding her hand.

She holds her own damn hand.

But even so, Fortuna does have morals and dreams of making things better for the faeries. She stands up for victims and those who are tossed aside or abused. She is a voice for the sufferer and an executioner for the wicked. She is incredibly resilient and strong, and doesn’t look for approval from others. She knows what she wants and takes it, and it’s impossible not to love her completely. Especially for her patience and persistence with Damon.

Fortuna has indeed “rescued Damon from the Unseelie court and from Jassin (good riddance), but Damon is a shell of who he once was. He is gaunt, withdrawn and has vowed to never forgive Fortuna for what she did to the faerie he loved. Most of the time he refuses to even acknowledge her presence, and it makes rooting for him so hard. But of course, that’s all you want to do. Damon’s situation is so tangled and doused in trauma, leaving him a skeleton of the Nightmare he once was. He’s in a haze of Stockholm Syndrome for this beautifully wretched faerie that enslaved him for two years, yet some piece of him also knows that he was treated horribly. Throughout the story Fortuna battles against giving him space and wanting to force him to forgive her, because though she hates to admit it, Damon is her weakness.

“I have weaknesses. I am vulnerable. But all of them are tied…to you.

Speaking of weaknesses

If you’re looking for a slow-burn romance that will beckon you towards its fluorescent flames with promises of warmth and contentment, fulfillment and happiness, coaxing you closer and closer, until you’re only a breath away from its beautiful blaze…only to have it push you in, engulfing your body in an agony and anguish that you can’t escape well, this is the book for you.

description

The romance that is, but also isn’t! Strong as she may be, Fortuna just can’t seem to break down that wall for Collith. And to be honest, who can blame her?! The guy bribed her into marrying him, and still withholds so many secrets from her that I can’t even decide if he’s a good guy or not. But of course, I am horribly in love with him. He is darkness shrouded in gentleness. He is eloquent, calm and sincere. Sure he holds back and is a faerie of few words, but there’s something to be said for his patience and stability. He proves to be dependable at every junction and always puts Fortuna first. Sounds like the real deal to me.

But in classic K.J. Sutton style, she has to put my heart into a panic blender.

description

Collith isn’t the only love interest in Fortuna’s life. There is Laurie, the Seelie King who is both slightly irritating but also swoon-worthy, who keeps flirting with Fortuna even though I wish he would just BACK OFF. But then…there’s Ollie. *Sigh*…my heart. When Fortuna was a child, Ollie was, what Fortuna assumes (and what the reader is told, but I’m suspicious), created by her through her subconscious. He lives in a dreamscape that they created together, and she meets him in her sleep every night. He has been a rock for her for years as a friend and confidant, and since recent years, something more. The bond Ollie and Fortuna share is so precious and gentle. Around Ollie, this fierce and harsh form of Fortuna falls away, leaving a regular girl with regular feelings and thoughts. She is vulnerable and honest with him, and it brings such a loving and alluring side to Fortuna that the reader doesn’t normally see.

But what I really need to talk about, is this goddamn cliffhanger.

My soul, was shattered by this ending.

description

I spent 45 minutes staring at nothing after finishing this book. I sat on my living room floor at a complete loss, unable to form coherent sentences, and stricken by what happened. Usually I crave for an author to torture me and shred my feelings into nothing…but THIS?! THIS?? This was just cruel.and I loved every second of it.

But now, all we can do is wait for book three. And I am praying to all hell that it comes quickly, because I still feel like I’m going to vomit all my hopeless romantic emotions up. And so with that, all I have left to say is

a demon? FFS.

SPOILERS ALERT. This is a rant review.
I flew through the first 20%, reassured I will love this book but boy, how that changed. It was almost painful to read in the middle and I stopped reading for days. I could not bring myself to finish because all the characters that I loved and enjoyed in Fortuna Sworn were destroyed. All of them took a 180º turn and I was left in anguish, thinking how did it get it this bad...
The reason why I didn't dnf was I wanted to know the ending. Last book had a shocking cliffhanger and I knew this one would have one too so I stayed. Boy, was I disappointed. Keep reading to know why.
What the hell happened to Fortuna?? I want to strangle her ngl. I talked about it in my update. She frustrated me so much. The way she thinks she's right and everyone is complimenting her all the time for doing the bare minimum. I want to retch. Like that one time, she and Collith were asked for help by a slave (who suffered bc of Fortuna) and she gets a message that her brother is in danger and she's like brb ttyl! Fake woke girlie.
And when she meets Collith's mother for the first time and she literally says
"Are you dying? I asked Naevys bluntly. I knew the question would cause Collith pain, and that wasn’t what I wanted—not anymore, at least—but I needed the truth of what my mate was facing every day."
IN FRONT OF COLLITH. I am disgusted.
When Collith is confronting Fortuna on why she kept rejecting him and he was deadset serious but all she could come up with was “Wow, you didn’t tell me you had a psychology degree. Weakest comeback of the century.
When she was making a bargain with the demon and the demon asked for something she valued the most. y'all wanna know what is that? Her virginity. I can't. I CAN'T.
One time she actually said something I agreed with:
"What it comes down to, really, is my tendency to do whatever I want and worry about the consequences later. I also like to blame everyone else for those shitty choices."
No truer words said.
Why are Americans so damn rude to their foster parents? It's a pattern I've noticed in a lot of American media. Not that I'm surprised.
Don't get me started on Oliver. He exists so we can pity him and Fortuna. That's it. A mess.
I hate every single character except Lyari. Maybe it's bc she hates Fortuna. You're doing amazing sweetie!
Laurie let me down the most. He turned out to be a douchebag and I am sad bc I saw potential in his character. The way he is always joking and cares for them. Wasted.
I don't understand the leadership of Collith and Fortuna. They are king and queen but not once did they do anything regarding the Court except attend one (1) tribunal. They spend most of their time above ground. Bro ain't yall got work to do??? And Laurie too? What type of rulers are yall?
The author added all supernatural creatures known to mankind thinking that will somehow make it interesting. It didn't. Kitsunes made an appearance.
The ending was so predictable. The way I didn't even blink when he died, knowing he will wake up in the next chapter or so. I was right.
This series is 6 books long. If the rest is like this book, there is no doubt I will not be continuing. I would still recommend reading the first part! I hold the same opinions about that book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Wow. I forgot how much happens in this book! 😳😱

-----------

FUCK! What a wild ride!!

I was a little underwhelmed by book 1 but Restless Slumber definitely dialed things way up! This picks up directly after Fortuna Sworn and the aftermath of her trials. I can't go too much into the plot without spoiling some of book 1, but the stakes definitely increase.

I loved all the grey morality and twists throughout this story. And the romance. Love. It. I'm obsessed with not only the romantic relationships the but friendships as well. (And I'm personally crossing all my fingers that this romance turns poly)

And that ending... what even?! I need book 3 yesterday.

So, I’ve sat on this a bit and I’ve decided I’m pretty solid on my choice of giving this two stars...unfortunately. I LOVED Fortuna Sworn and was so excited for this sequel.

The plot in this one gave me whiplash and I honestly don’t see the point in a majority of it? Also, I can’t stand love triangles and it’s even worse when they are like a Love octagon. I didn’t think that could even be possible but here we are.

And that scene at the end? What in the fuck.

Will I read the next one though? It’s a possibility lol.
