Once a Scoundrel...Always a Scoundrel?? Stephen Crenshaw, Marquess of Dunwich, set his sights on becoming one of the ton’s most notorious rogues. Gambling, drinking, scandals, seduction...nothing seemed out of bounds for the young peer in his wild pursuit to prove himself to be the exact opposite of everything his respectable family wanted. But four years in the army and the loss of his best friend have irreparably changed him. Now he’s returned to England a new man, one set on reclaiming everything he’d lost... including the woman who loved him.

Lady Faith Westover, daughter of the Duke of Strathmore, knows better than anyone the scoundrel that Stephen had been. After all, he’d broken her heart in a wounding so terrible that it nearly destroyed her belief in love. Now he’s back and hell bent on proving that he’s changed. Four years have certainly matured him physically, but Faith doubts if he’s truly changed into the respectable and loving lord he proclaims himself to be. When faced with his past as a scoundrel, can Stephen find a way to obtain what his heart desires most—the woman he was never meant to have?

I fell in love with historical romances and all things Regency—and especially all those dashing Regency heroes—while living in England, where I spent most of my time studying the Romantic poets, reading Jane Austen, and getting lost all over the English countryside.

When I read my first Regency romance in 2012, I was hooked and longed to create my own independent and spirited heroines and dashing heroes. The best part of writing historical romances is falling into history—to live in the world of Regency England through my characters, with dazzling balls, beautiful dresses, and gorgeous houses that I would otherwise never be able to experience. I love the period’s rich history and find that all those rules of etiquette and propriety can be worked to the heroine’s advantage…if she’s daring enough to seize her dreams.

In addition to earning my degrees in the U.S., I have studied theatre in London, Mexican history in Guadalajara, and Spanish in Ecuador. I am an avid traveler and have enjoyed visiting schools and volunteering with children's organizations in Peru, Ecuador, Thailand, and Mexico, and I have amassed thousands of photos I unleash on unsuspecting friends who dare to ask about my travels.

I love to be outdoors! I've been hiking in Alaska, the Andes, and the Alps, including one week spent dangling off the via ferrata in the Italian Dolomites, and I love whitewater rafting (when I don't fall in!). I earned my pilot’s license at Chicago Midway (To all the controllers in Chicago Center—I greatly apologize for every problem I caused for you and Southwest Airlines), and it is my dream to one-day fly in a hot-air balloon over Africa.

I adore all things chocolate, shamelessly dive into ice cream of any flavor, and guzzle Kona coffee by the gallon. A Doctor Who fanatic (everyone says my house is bigger on the inside), I am a terrible cook who hopes to one day use my oven for something other than shoe storage. When I'm not writing, I like to spend my time trying not to kill the innocent rose bushes in my garden.

'Once a Scoundrel' by Ann Harrington is book four in the "The Secret Life of Scoundrels" series. This is the story of Stephen Crenshaw, Marquess of Dunwich and Lady Faith Westover. This was a sweet love story of second chances and a easy read to! The book is a Novella with about 140 pages and can easily be a standalone book. Faith has always had a crush on family friend Stephen but about four years ago he started to notice her and they kissed a few times. But then Stephen up and left with his friend and joined the military whit not a word to her. Faith suffered a broken heart and swore to not let him back into her heart again. Now all these years later he has returned home with his friend dying in the war. Stephen has sworn that he is changed and wants only to be with her but Faith does try to stand by her feelings of protecting herself. But Faith has a soft heart and Stephen isn't letting her go this time! I have enjoyed Ms. Harrington's book so much! I am so happy this was just as great a read as the other ones I have read!

Stephan and Faith. This was a nice predictable yet well done read.
Stephan and Faith have history. They grew up on adjacent estates. Their parents are the best of friends. And at one time, Faith had thought they shared love. But he was a feckless young man too interested in rebelling against his parents by whoring around and acting the rake. Four years ago he had gone off to war in India and has now come back a changed man. But is he really? And who is the woman with the young child to him?
I liked that he really had been a cad (not just some misunderstanding or lies) and that he really did need to prove himself changed and newly responsible. I also liked that Faith wasn't easily convinced, and yet not a b*tch either.
It's short and there really isn't much to the story, so the length was perfect.
I just wish he didn't always seem to have the upper hand. The h was plagued with weak knees whenever he touched her. I wished she had a wee bit more spine and the occassional last word.

OW stuff

There’s only one man for Lady Faith Westover and that man broke her heart many years ago. Now he’s returned. Faith has sworn she will not fall for his charm once more. Knowing him for the scoundrel he is doesn’t seem to make a difference to that contrary organ she thought was forever hardened to him and nothing makes that clearer than his appearance at her family’s summer party. Now to keep her heart under lock and key while avoiding any contact.
Stephen Crenshaw, Marquess of Dunwich, is suffering. Suffering the death of his best friend, a woman and child he has vowed to protect, the life he used to lead, and most of all having left the one woman he now knows he loves with all his heart. With rumors swirling about his life since returning from war it is now his mission to convince the woman he loves that they belong together.
Faith presents as a girl who has grown into a woman who knows what she wants. Her desire to stay friends with Steven without falling for him all over again is a struggle that Anna Harrington writes so well. I could feel the pull to Steven along with her war with herself to protect her heart. And with Steven, his guilt leaps from the pages and his desire to do what is right for everyone he holds dear. I had to admire his determination to accept his responsibilities and to go after what he wants without being overbearing.
Anna Harrington has written a tale of love lost and found again along with the trials to obtain it. Ms. Harrington is a talented writer that pulls the reader into her story as if they were there. Looking forward to reading more of her work.

Loved this novella. It was a sweet, sweet, sweet story of love and second chances. I loved the books where we met the parents of the hero and heroine -- and now I love the continuation. It is too bad that this was a novella because I would have loved to visit a little more with the parents.

I was surprised that Stephen Crenshaw, Marquess of Dunwich was such a rebellious young man. His father died when he was just a tiny thing and then his mother was basically rescued by and married to his step-father. Both of those were good characters and I never thought they'd be the type to have unrealistic expectations of their son. Anyway -- I was a little surprised by his childhood and the expectations, etc.

The war really changed him and the one person he most wanted to convince that he'd changed was the girl he'd been in love with before he left for the war. He was just too dumb to know he loved her - and then he broke her heart when he just up and left without any word to her at all. Now he is back and is trying to convince her that he can now be trusted with her heart. She is, of course, not convinced in the least.

He is positive and never deterred by her rejections. He stays patient and woo's her until he finally breaks through her reserve. I loved how positive he was and how certain he was throughout the entire book. He never wavered and finally won his lady.

This book saved me from boredom during my 3-hour glucose screening! It made me laugh and cry (although I may have cried more than normal due to my pregnancy! LOL). - I had to wipe several tears quickly away in the waiting room!

I love it when the author continues a series writing about the children that you met in the previous book - that is how Once a Scoundrel is. It's the fourth book in Anna Harrington's The Secret Life of Scoundrel Series. It follows Stephen Crenshaw, the Marquess of Dunwich, and Faith Westover, the daughter of the Duke of Strathmore. They grew up together as close family friends. Then, when Faith turned 19, Stephen began flirting with her, paying her compliments, and she fell head over heals for him. He was a wastrel at that time though, flirting his way through society and not ready to settle down. He left suddenly, with no goodbye and no explanation to Faith. Stephen went and joined the army in India with his best friend. He was gone for years and only communicated with Faith a few times. After his best friend died, Stephen returned home to take up his responsibilities as a Marquess...and to make things right with Faith, whom he thought of often while he was away. They saw each other again for the first time at Faith's father's birthday celebration and the chemistry picked up right where it left off. However, Faith was very weary of Stephen hurting her again and Stephen had to overcome not only rumors that swirled around in society, but Faith's lack of "faith" in his sincerity and love for her.

I love that this book brought on different emotions throughout the story - from humor to sadness, to so much more. And I really enjoy how Faith, and all of the women in Anna Harrington's books, are strong, determined, and rule the roost, but still are soft, kind, loving and feminine. I would definitely recommend this book, and the previous 3 books to anyone who enjoys historical romances.

I received an advanced reader copy at no cost from the author.

Enjoyed reading about the second generation of the Scoundrels. Stephen, the stepson of Nathaniel Grey (Along Came a Rogue) has returned from service in the army determined to accept his responsibilities and prove that he is no longer the irresponsible rake he was before he left. But will he be able to convince Faith Westover, daughter of Edward Westover (Dukes are Forever) that he is sincere? Especially since there are rumors that he currently has a mistress and illegitimate son living on his estate.

This is only my 5th book by Anna Harrington. I really liked her 1st book in Dukes of Darkness series so went back to my notes and saw that I had read book 1 in this series back in 2021. I didn't get more because I thought she was a bit expensive. I average 300 books a year and anything over $5 is too much. I’ve learned over the years to get the expensive books with amazon credits and buy them on double points days. 😊 I loved book 2 and 3 and added them to my favorite reads for Oct, 2024 so definitely had to finish up the series.

I loved that these characters were kids of the characters in the previous books. I loved Stephen and Faith. Easy read. Gives you all the feels. Just a cute couple, cute story and overall good read.

Short and sweet topping at the end of this series, showing us a little bit of life after for other characters, too. I just wish we'd get a little more insight into how are the other children of main characters from the full-length novels doing.

A romance with the daughter of Edward and Kate from book one and the adopted son of Nathan and Emily from book 2, there's no way I would not read this novella !

If Faith have to hear another gossip about Stephen Crenshaw and his alleged mistress at her father's birthday celebration, she will explode.

A friend of the family and a friend with whom she shared kisses before he enroll in war without notice, Stephen is back from India after four years. Faith is still resentful because she thought his fine words and the kisses meant something and she hoped for more.

Losing a friend at war opened Stephen eyes and made him realize what's really important in life and what he really wants : Faith. He knows he didn't treat her as he should have and intend to win her forgiveness for his former behavior.

Gone is the selfish rogue that Faith knew, but she will not be so easily convinced and she have a hard time believing in what he say, knowing how little his words once meant.

It will take a lot of patience and several tries for Stephen before he can make her see that he really changed and that he's here for good this time. It will also take the help of a woman and her baby and the help of dog to make her realize that Stephen is honest and trustworthy.

Apart from the fact that at one point I thought it took too much time before Faith begin to believe in Stephen and there was too many moments where he tried to convince her, this novella was everything I wanted it to be. There's a funny scene with the three previous hero and we saw plenty of Faith's parents and they acted exactly like I would expect and wished, not too overbearing but with enough firmness and a protective instinct. It's sweet that Faith inherited her mother's need to take care of the sicks and applied it to animals. There's lot of witty jesting and the epilogue was so cute.

Faith was heartbroken when Stephen joined the army and left England without even a goodbye note. As far as she knew, they were more than friends and shared a bond that in her heart she dared call love. Stephen apparently didn’t see things that way.
He was a rake of the first class. He pretty much refused to carry the title of a Duke by being a rake of the worst class and by providing fuel to the endless gossip and tales that people liked to create about him.
Four years later, Stephen returned claiming to be a changed man, ready to settle down and asking Faith for a second chance.

So, our hero wounded our heroine and now he’s trying to make amends. Faith sounded a smart woman, resolute in refusing Stephen advances because she knew the kind of man he used to be and of course she didn’t want her heart crushed once again. Also, the fact that he brought home some unwelcomed people didn’t help much his cause.
As I was reading I kept asking myself, can a rake truly change? Can you learn to believe in him again? Particularly in this instance when he kept saying one thing but actions expressed something completely different. He was open and honest with Faith (I mean, I was reading his side of the story) but she didn’t know that so she relied on what she saw to make a decision. The good thing is that he never gave up on her and in the end she realized that either she took a risk or she could lose him forever.

Although the story was a bit slow-paced for me it was still enjoyable. In truth, I think it was more a matter of lack of communication that delayed the HEA than anything else. It is part of a series but can definitely be read as a standalone and I recommend it to historical lovers that like light stories with a bit of heart tugging.

Once a Scoundrel, the fourth work in Anna Harrington's The Secret Life of Scoundrel Series, is another well written and satisfying story by an author who is quickly establishing a strong presence as a must read!

Ms. Harrington latest work brings to mind the old adage "can a leopard change its spots?" or more aptly can a scoundrel change his ways? An unfinished past is confronted as long confirmed rogue Stephen Creshaw, Marquess of Dunwich returns to his former life four years later a changed man after serving in the military. Stephen's transformation from scoundrel to respectable man is unfortunately only apparent to him and sets him on a course of proving his worth to the woman he left behind brokenhearted, Lady Faith Westover.

An engaging story of extreme desires, the heroine's conflict between denying her urges and embracing a chance at love are well matched with the heroes determination to win her over. The hero's inner pain, that he carries from his past, add another interesting layer to this work as he struggles to find a place of acceptance within himself. Depictions by this author never take the easy route and are that much more intriguing and dimensional as a result of this. Ms. Harrington's ability to create kisses with words that leave readers with tangible heart flutters shows her mastery at portraying romance. Once a Scoundrel is a novella full of emotional stutters that as it progresses to a wonderful conclusion will leave not only its characters full of hope, happiness and peaceful resolutions but also its audience!

*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.*
*While part of a series this book can be read as a stand alone.*

Euphoric! Joyful!! Uplifting!!!

These are but a few words to describe the latest release, Once A Scoundrel, written by Anna Harrington. Once again, Ms. Harrington has penned a classic historical romance in which the characters literally leap off the page in this fourth installment from the The Secret Life of Scoundrel’s series. This heartwarming novella is a must read for anyone who believes that love really does conquer all.

Reformed rake, Stephen Crenshaw, Marquess of Dunwich, returns from India with one goal in mind to marry Lady Faith Westover. But first, he’ll have to prove that he has mended his wicked ways. He is no longer the self-centered young man who took Faith’s love for granted.

It’s not easy to trust the man who stole your heart only to leave you abandoned and alone. This is especially so when you doubt the intentions of the man who claims he is deeply in love with you. Faith Westover, knows all too well about battles of the heart she never stopped loving Stephen. Can she lay her soul bare and grant him a second chance?

You’ll have to read this novella to uncover the answers. I promise Once A Scoundrel will make your heart flutter. I was fortunate to receive an advanced reader copy at no cost from the author. However, I purchased the other three books in the series and just like this novella, they were well worth their weight in gold. I’m a lifetime fan of Anna Harrington’s written word. Happy reading!

Another 5-star story by Anna Harrington.

Stephen Crenshaw is coming home after four years in the army and Lady Faith Westover is determined not to give him the satisfaction of letting him know how much he hurt her when he left without a word. After becoming one of the ton’s biggest rakes, the fact of which Faith was able to overlook (knowing what he must have felt for her was real), he enlisted in the army to change his life.

Now that he has returned, Stephen is determined to make everyone see that he has changed. But it will all be for naught if he cannot get Faith to give him a second chance. His main reason for returning was to win her heart. He didn’t factor in how hard it would be to earn her trust back after breaking her heart. Added to the mix are a couple of other obstacles that must be overcome, including a lady and her child that the ton believes are his.

This was a fun, quick read that had plenty of romance and humor to make time fly as I was reading it. I particularly enjoyed seeing characters from the previous Scoundrels book as parents and such. They added flavor to the story without overshadowing Stephen and Faith’s journey. A wonderful read.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.

When Stephen Crenshaw, the adopted son of Major Nathaniel Grey (from Along Came A Rogue), comes home from war, his life has changed. Events that happened during his time at war have changed his life. He has decided that he wants to change and for his life to mean something besides being a rake and scoundrel. He owes this to not only himself but to a friend. To accomplish this, his life has to include Lady Faith Strathmore, daughter of Edward Westover, Duke of Strathmore (from Dukes Are Forever), He left never telling Faith how he felt about her.

When he left to join the army he left Faith behind. He broke her heart and now he wants to make this up to her. To Faith, his leaving left her so devastated she doesn't know if she can forgive him. But the love she has for Stephen Crenshaw refuses to go away and she is so torn between the Stephen who left and the Stephen who returned. The path to true love and happily ever after never runs smooth as the two soon find out.

I loved Once A Scoundrel! It is about a man who comes back from war a hardened veteran and wants desperately to win back the love of a childhood friend. Four years prior, he had broken her heart when he left for war without a word to her.

My favorite part about this book was how sweet the heroin is. Faith Westover is someone I would include in my circle of friends; I was rooting for her. Her love of animals really makes her character shine.

The adult material was toned down from the previous books. Despite this, the book is well written and creates just as much spark between the characters.
Faith and Stephen from Once A Scoundrel are actually the children of the main characters in the earlier books in the series. It was very intriguing to see how their parents deal with Faith and Stephen's complicated love, knowing what chaos those same parents created in their own young love lives.

The title of the book captures its content well.

Note that I received a copy of this book from the author at no cost to me in exchange for an honest review.

NOT A SPOILER This book was a quick easy read with likeable characters in believable situations. This book drew me in quickly, became hard to put down and I had to finish (at 0130 am) it in one sitting! I had also signed up for the snail mail notification on Anna’s website. I received a door hanger for my bedroom door as the promotion for this book and both my husband and myself had a great chuckle from the notice! As I received it in the form of an ARC (advanced readers copy) I must reveal this. Some say this is a coerced review; but how is it different from reading a book from the library or on loan from a friend?

What happened to the man, Stephen, she loved 4 years ago (and thought loved her back)?

He left without a word.
He never wrote to her.
He made no promises.

She was devastated. She did not know of the conniving that happened behind her back, either. He wants her now as his wife, but the secrets he has now on his return from India could ruin their chances—until Faith has to deal with a crisis.

This was a great book for an afternoon diversion. The characters were flawed which made them seem real rather than fictional. I don't want to spoil the storyline for anyone so I will gloss over that part. I loved that Faith had interests outside of Stephen and that Stephen realized what his character flaws were and how he changed during the war. I like that you could see the shift in the way the characters thought as they developed and overcame obstacles. I do think some parts were glossed over a bit where the author could have delved a little deeper to further develop the characters though. It was a fantastic read overall and I recommend this book.

Anna Harrington knows how to write. I love to read romance for the story and emotion, but I also appreciate books that have well thought out writing. Novellas are difficult because the pages are fewer. But, Once a Scoundrel tells a story without feeling cheated that it wasn't developed enough. I loved hearing from some of the beloved characters from the first Secret Life of Scoundrels books and smiled a lot at the very witty dialogue.

Romance is all about the HEA, so I knew it was coming. But the Once A Scoundrel storyline kept a pace that made me wonder how it was going to come about. Nice.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novella. It was a story about redemption and rebuilding trust. The hero refused to give up despite the heroine's initial mistrust. He understood why she felt the way she did and appreciated that it would take time to rebuild their relationship. This was a novella, but it did not feel rushed to me. It helped that the characters already had a history, and the story built on that.

It was fun seeing cameos of other characters I'd enjoyed too!

Though short, this story was a delight to read. It is always fun to revisit old characters and see how they are doing. I really enjoyed seeing the Duke of Strathmore and his lovely wife, who is still up to her doctoring ways. I also really enjoyed meeting their daughter, Lady Faith Westover. The plot moves along quickly. The characters are lovable and the romance melts your heart. My only complaint would be that the story was too short! I can't wait for the next book!

This story has everything that I've come to expect in an Anna Harrington book: well written, very likeable characters, humor and romance. Add in the fact that the heroine is an animal lover and I'm beyond thrilled. I would recommend this book, along with the whole series, to any fan of historical romance.

I received an advanced reader copy at no cost from the author. I absolutely loved this novella and can't wait for the next book and I loved Anna Harrington s characters and plots. I don't want to spoil anything since it was a short novella.
