Describing the plot of any book in this Defenders series sounds totally insane, yet it's still somehow awesome. Merlin Merrick, who shifts into a size-changing velociraptor, grew up in a circus where all of the 'trained' animals were actually animal shifters. Now, when Merlin (and his new girlfriend Dali) are targeted by wizard scientist Morgana, he and the rest of the Protection, Inc. crew have to save Merlin's family and old friends and prevent humans from discovering that shapeshifters exist.

Both Defenders books include female MC's with disabilities, which might be the start of a theme. Former Navy yeoman Dali has PTSD and a prosthetic hand after being injured in an explosion. While her PTSD kept her from staying in the Navy, her experiences in this book help her gain confidence and reduce her anxiety, leaving her able to do anything she puts her mind to. I love the circus angle, and Merlin's (foster? adoptive?) mom. This is certainly one of the most unique story line's I've come across in any recent book.

Magically delightful!

Everything fantastical for the child inside us all, and a heat and action for the adult . I highly recommend this series to readers who enjoy Urban Fantasy at its finest. Enjoy!

Dali was in the US Navy, where she left her job after an explosion left her some scars. She is currently unemployed, but her grandmother demands to enjoy a walk in the park wearing an heirloom necklace. Suddenly, some pigeons steals the necklace and she walks to the police station to report the incident, but they are taking her seriously, so she left. When a kitten suddenly flew towards her, it wanted to cling to her, and they fled the alley as someone started throwing darts. Then, she decides to go to the Defender's office to seek some help.
Merlin is a velociraptor shifter and he has another power where people will see what they perceive him to be. He works at the Defender with his teammates whom have been experimented on which turned them into mythical shifters. He has known that they do not believe that he grew up in a circus and his stories are not real. As he heads towards the office, he sees a woman standing near his trap where she frees her flying kitten. She tells him her story of how she got away from people trying to shot her. He immediately offers to protect Dali from the wizard scientists and she requests that he should help her to retrieve her grandma's necklace.
Dali is intrigued by Merlin and she finds him attractive. Merlin tells her that he joined a circus and he has an idea about who is indirectly responsible for stealing the necklace. Thus, they head to the circus together to investigate her missing necklace.
He explained to Dali that he has not visited them for a long time but he was not telling him about something. They watch the entire performance and she had a great time enjoying it. However,

This was a good shifter romance, the second in a spin-off series of the Protection, Inc. series -- Protection, Inc: Defenders. It can be read standalone, but will be much more enjoyable if you read the original Protection, Inc. series first (it introduced this Defenders series, and contains characters who are mentioned in this series), then read this series in order.

I liked Merlin, but got a little frustrated when he simply refused to believe that he could tell his Defender team mates about his powers or more about his past. He was so sure that they would judge him, and would no longer want him to be part of their team -- but he was wrong about that.

I liked Dali, too, but thought she made a big mistake near the end of the book. I won't give spoilers, but she could have lost Merlin because of it. She is lucky he forgave her.

I absolutely loved the cute magical animals in this book. They were creative, and so much fun!

One problem I have with all of Zoe Chant's series is that there is so long between books. Lots of times I have to go back and reread some of the earlier books in a series, simply because it has been so long that I don't remember all the characters. That is frustrating. I know Zoe Chant is actually a group of authors, and one person writes all the books in a series -- but I wish the books in a series could be published closer together. In this case, it had been quite some time since I read the original Protection, Inc. series, so I had trouble remembering some details, especially how the Defenders spin-off series was introduced.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Acceptance!!!

Dalisay "Dali" Bastiste, a Veteran Navy who was fired from her job got mugged by a flock of pigeons. They stole her grandmother's necklace, the cops didn't take her case seriously. On her way out of the precinct she encountered a flying kitten who'd adopted her.

There was danger lurking around the both of them, to keep everyone in her building safe. She decided to ask her neighbors Tirzah and Pete for help and headed to their work place, Protection Inc: Defenders agency. She just never expected her life to get turn upside down.

Merlin Merrick, a former Recon Marine like Pete ( DEFENDER CAVE BEAR ) and Ethan ( TOP GUN TIGER
He had lots of secrets that he was trying to keep from those close to him. He grew up in a circus surrounded by shifters who were all held in captivity by an international crime organization. Even though he wanted to keep his mate at arm's length, fate had other plans for him. His former circus family's pigeons stole her family's heirloom and she hired him to find it.

He told his teammates about his time at the circus but they didn't believe him. He wanted them to respect, trust and believe in him. It scared him to think about their reactions when they would find out about his secrets. Dali gound out and she was very intrigued by what she discovered. She wanted him to be able to be himself 100 pct.

Another one of the wizard-scientists, Morgana thought she could do a better job at getting the Dark Knights and the magical creatures than the previous one who'd went against Merlin and his friends and lost. She was so arrogant that she underestimated them. Loved how they had each other's backs but also how Merlin's two worlds collided and became one big extended one.

Dali got back her necklace, she fell in love with Merlin and was willing to walk away from him in order to prevent him from choosing betweem her and what made him happy. She didn't realize that his happiness laid in her happiness.

It's always a delightful pleasure to see the West coast and the East coast branches of Protection Inc. coming together. Looking forward to more in the future.

DEFENDER RAPTOR is the second book in Zoe Chant's PROTECTION INC: DEFENDERS series. It was engrossing, fun, adventurous and a must read. Great job by Zoe Chant. Two thumbs up!

P. S. Looking forward to Ransom's story! ;)

Merlin is part of a team of misfit shifters who work as bodyguards although he's not sure they even like him and he knows that they don't believe his stories about where he grew up. Merlin was raised in a circus where all the animals are shifters but the biggest secret is that the circus is actually a crime ring.

Dali was in an explosion on a Navy ship and survived; however, she lost her career afterwards. While walking through the park one day, her grandmother's heirloom necklace is stolen by some pigeons. She decides to go to Protection Inc for help. On the way, a sweet flying kitten finds her. At Protection Inc, she meets and hires Merlin who tells her about shifters and says that the pigeons were probably shifters. He takes her to the circus which is in town because he's afraid that there may be a connection.

Dali and Merlin have one week to find her grandmother's necklace and get it back. When several strange events keep occurring, it seems that there may be a wizard-scientist involved. They're also dealing with an intense relationship that has taken them by surprise. Can it withstand the test of time?

I loved the original Protection Inc series and figured I'd enjoy the Defenders series. I was right as I am absolutely loving it! This book reeled me in from the beginning and kept me hooked until the end. Dali and Merlin are two different people but they balance each other. The book's well-written with well-rounded characters you'll love getting to know and you're going to enjoy getting to know more about the Defenders team. I'm now eager for the next book ~ it can't come fast enough! I highly recommend both book and series which I suggest you read in order. It may even be beneficial to read the original series first.

I think the best way to describe this book was 'sweet' - by which I mean 'tooth-achingly, and occasionally cloyingly, sweet'. Merlin was incredibly, unrelievedly sweet, even if he spent most of the page time reading like a kid who's high on sugar. The flying kitten was sweet. Even Blue, the annoying bugbear, was sweet.

And perhaps because of the unrelieved sweetness, this took me WAY longer to read - almost 3 weeks - than a Zoe Chant book would normally take. I kept picking it up, reading a bit, and then... forgetting to pick it up again for a few days.

That frustrates me a little, because there were elements of this book I really liked. Dali dealing with her PTSD, and the incorporation of her disability into the story. The concept, if not the execution, of Merlin's circus background. And even Caro turned out to be a much more palatable character when she's not providing a main source of plot conflict. Plus, I like that we have a reverse grumpy/sunshine dynamic going on.

But. That damn sweetness again. And the alleged main plot - of Morgana trying to make Merlin one of her Dark Knights - just felt like an afterthought thrown in because whichever Zoe writes this one realised at the last minute that there needed to be a plot thread outside of the main romance. Plus, my least favourite conflict trope: communication issues that could be solved with an honest five-minute conversation.

And to be honest, I think I might be over the whole flying kitten thing by this point.

So yes. Elements of the book I liked, but it just didn't come together in a satisfying way for me. Maybe the next one in the series will work better?

This was such a whimsical, magical book, more so than the others in the series. Although the romance is standalone, I feel like people would get more out of this book if they read the first book in this series as well as the prior series that this series spun off from (Protection, Inc and Protection, Inc: Defenders are two separate but interconnected series). This is especially true because Protection, Inc is such a fun series and those characters also make appearances throughout this series.

This book follows Merlin, the velociraptor shifter and Dali, a ex-Navy yeoman. Merlin helps Dali with retrieving a stolen necklace but realize quickly that there is a bigger, more nefarious plot in play. Full of adorable flying animals, a circus of shifters (literally) and lots of fantastic characters, this was such a fun read. The only thing that wasn't fun was actually how people initially treated Merlin, which made me really sad because he was such a sweet, adorable and whimsical character. I loved him and his slightly neurotic, sugar-crazy raptor. I went through so many emotions while reading the book- I smiled, laughed, swooned and tensed up throughout the book, which to me shows that this is a well rounded story. I requested and received an early copy and was so happy to have the opportunity to read this twice, one through KU.

This is the second book in the Protectors Inc. Defender series, which itself is a spin-off from the original Protectors Inc. series, and it is recommended that you read both the original series, and the books that come before this one, before reading this, as characters from the first series appear, and the storyline continues on from that series too.
Our hero, Merlin, gets to connect with his circus family in this book. The heroine, Dali (Dally) is one of the neighbors of the characters from the first book.
When Dali runs across a winged kitten shortly after a necklace she was wearing is stolen, she turns to Protection Inc. to help keep it safe and to find her necklace.
With various circus hijinx going on, the bad guys who are still looking for the magical creatures and the guys from protection Inc. playing games in the background, Merlin and Dali struggle to figure out what is going on.
If you’ve read the other Protection Inc. books, then this book is just as enjoyable as they are. Merlin is a loveable character, and this story explains many of his odd quirks.
Dali is unique, her past has cost her a lot.
The two of them together are definitely an opposites attract situation, but they make an enthralling couple.
If you enjoy paranormal romance, you’ll enjoy this one.

A very different shifter based story read through Kindle Unlimited.
I can’t say I loved it but I didn’t hate it either. It just felt too long with an awful lot of confusion at times.
Some parts were magical though. The special pets were adorable, I loved Merlin’s raptor side and his running commentary and snarky comments. So funny about the sofa incident.
Liked Dali, she was a competent woman even with what she has gone through.
Merlin was a sweetheart, so unsure of his self-worth.
I know this office of shifters are a dysfunctional group, but I hated the way the others treated him with disdain. So glad his circus stories, basically his life, were proven correct.
Merlin and his past was interesting and entertaining but I was a bit wearied by all the circus talk, descriptions and actions.
I’m not a fan of circus’s so that flavoured my thinking.
Proofreading needs to be improved. Incorrect spellings and missing letters in words is annoying.
Read through Kindle Unlimited.
Not really a lot happening with the baddies, the bit we had felt like an aside that needed to be included.

This second in the series, just might have topped the first. I fell in love with Merlin instantly in book one. I knew there was going to be more to him, I just didn't know how much. Of course he can be a bit of a 'clown', he was raised in a circus after all. This is the side of him he shows to most. Dali, however, has the ability to see underneath the surface. He is kind, loyal, caring and sweet. But what he really hides is his vulnerability. It broke my heart a little. But overall, the story was just amazing. Action throughout, laughs galore and just enough romance. Dali and Merlin needed each other in a way neither of them expected. And the Team showed, when it matters, family sticks together. Every 'Zoe' book is a must read. The only problem, I have to wait for Ransom. I received an advanced copy and this is my honest opinion.

💢 Wow a Prehistoric Dinosaur Shifter! Definitely a Must Read!

🔹 Dali Batiste was in the navy but something happened to her ship and she woke up needing a prosthetic left hand. Depressed and barely making it, her grandmother gives her a necklace. While wearing it some pigeons come and take it off of her and that she’s in trouble she have to get it back, going to the Protection Inc. for help.

Wow! Zoe took a character that came across as flighty in previous books and made me fall in love with him!

Merlin felt unseen and thought no one wanted him around. Inside him, He had a sugar addicted raptor and a secret power. Then he meets Dali, a woman who may just see all of him. When the past he left behind meets the present he never planned, can he be who people want him to be, or will he finally realize he’s been that person all along?

Dali found a home in the Navy, and it was taken away in one night. Now back in civilian life, She feels unwhole and adrift. When unusual advice from her Grandmother leads her to a new pet and an intriguing man, she gets the excitement she’s been missing. Can she see her place in this new world or will it disappear too?

Highly recommend this book!

The Circus is in Town

Merlin Merrick is the funny, unique, misunderstood member of the Protection, Inc.:Defenders Agency. This rag tag group of seemingly misfit shifters escaped from magic wizard/scientists who had made them shifters with magic powers they have yet to quite figure out. Merlin is seen by the others as a kinda little brother who rambles on about his past exploits that none of them believe. He's handsome, funny, charming and talented. But his raptor and magic power keep him off balance and feeling separated. Dali is practical and honest, and recovering from an injury suffered while in the Navy. She's also recently felt lost and alone. The two of them are great together and they provide strong team work and love. Imaginative writing, delightful problem solving and terrific characters in a wonderful book.

Omg!! It was awesome that Berlin's team mates actually helped him even though they act like they can't stand him at xs and never want 2 believe his stories even though the stories r true. But I don't get is about that bitch wizard. That was the only part I didn't understand. It acted like she died but yet acted like she ran away so which one is it?? I was really happy that Ransom was finally showing a little but if happiness and fun helping out. But I hate when his powers even though they r really helpful hurt him. His animal is awesome!! His mate is unique that even if she's hindered down her grandma gave her a blessing in did all 4 the best benefit. I sooooo can't wait 2 read the next one asap!! I hope.

So much fun!

I should have read this when it first came out! I accepted the Defenders valuation of Merlin and almost missed this fun, magical, amazing book. Merlin's backstory is so affecting, and the constant disparagement by his team is hard to take; thank goodness he's such a laid-back charmer to balance all the negativity. Dali has lost so much, and her story could have easily been a downer since she isn't exactly optimistic in the beginning. This is an interesting read with well-balanced peril, intriguing info about the wizard scientists, discovering what it feels like to know someone's got your back, a solid mate bond, and plenty of adorably magical pets. And the east coast/west coast/family reunion is absolutely perfect fun mayhem!

Great Story!!! 4.7 stars

This is my first read by this author. I almost didn’t finish reading the whole story. The beginning was boring, some immaturity and confusing along with the H & H’s background moving to fast, however, I did finish the book and the author has really created a new and amazing world. The characters fit very well in the world and they keep calling themselves “The Bad News Bears which is very close to what they are, but starting in the middle of the story it really pulls you in. The action scenes were very hard to follow with a lot of grammatical errors🙁. I hope the author keeps writing this series.🙂

So good!

I love this series! The characters are believable, with very individual personalities and backgrounds. The stories are intricate, especially this one that is about Merlin. Oh, what a unique man! The special pets make me want to have a tantrum like a 5-year-old because I want one so desperately, and with each new pet I add it to my list of wants! Seems I'll have to write Merlin and ask him for mystical pet trap plans, he's got to have enough. There are laughs, there are times that are heartbreaking, there's action, and of course there's some steam. Definitely a most enjoyable book!

Quirkiness Reigns!

Merlin is quirky! Dali in just the opposite. But as the old saying goes, "Opposites attract". Velociraptor shifter, Merlin, knows there is something special about Dali and her magical flying kitten, Cloud, he just doesn't know what. He's going to find out, though.

This story is so much fun. Wonderful characters, some human, some not, take readers on an exciting romp of action, danger, and suspense. There's lots of romance and intrigue, too. I so enjoyed reading Merlin and Dell's story. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this book the characters are so real and I love in this series how each mate has a disability to overcome and how she doesn't let it hold her back, but again like in the protection Inc series I have an issue with the same day I met you sex a bit fast in my opinion. But that's just me who knows that could be normal, I just don't care for it I prefer them having a day or two to get to know each other. But otherwise the characters plot details and animals were great so I recommend this series 4 stars

More Than A Circus

The characters were such a quirky mixture you couldn't help but get involved in what was going on in their lives. Merlin was part of a team Of shifter's with magical pets but yet he didn't feel like he really belong.I

Dali was experiencing change, her life but not adjusting well.

When they meet it's like instant connection but each were damaged in their own way so they would have to find their way to be together. These are not spoilers just impressions of the characters in this book.

A World of Pure Imagination and Whimsy

Reading this was like stepping into an alternative reality where imagination is allowed to run free. Both humorous and touching and filled with characters and animals that made me laugh out loud.

The characters, all non traditional, are fully formed and beautifully written as to feel real. And the animals are delightfully whimsical. Who wouldn’t want a Batcat or a Bearbug... especially a blue one!

Thank you Zoe for making the world a brighter place with your amazing imagination!

What do circuses, shifters, flying kittens, dinosaurs, a bugbear, and a prosthetic hand have in common. They're all parts of Merlin's past, present, and future. He also loves all of them. Well, maybe not the prosthetic hand. He loves Dali; all of her including her prosthetic hand. Dali's certain her PTSD makes her a failure but Merlin isn't the kind of guy to blame someone for being scared or traumatized. He's seen and done too much to be that callous. With someone trying to kill Merlin he's going to have to face his past in order to ensure he has a future with Dali.

Maddeningly, endearing alpha male meets his mate. Merlin appears to be the most open member of the team yet no one believes his exuberant tales of his life. Like the other members of his team, he hides his second talent. He knows Dali is special and feels like maybe his life is finally coming together. Unfortunately the team's enemies continue to plot against them and Merlin will have to rely on the team he thinks doesn't want him and the circus family (literally) he left behind to keep the girl and defeat his nemesis.

I love Merlin ... loved him the minute he hit the page. He's absolutely determined to catch a magical pet. His team is forever exasperated with him.

Dali is struggling with her current life situation. Her grandmother lends her heirloom necklace to her, tells her it's good luck, and she needs to go live life a little. Get dressed up and go smell the roses. Pigeon thieves take her necklace, she rescues an adorable kitten with wings ... and tracks down the Defenders to help her get her necklace back. Ransom meets her at the office, and tells her Merlin with be there in a few minutes :) Got to love the psychic on the team.

I loved this couple. The crime-shifter circus is a hoot .. his team stepping up to help had me cracking up. A super fun read.

I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
Dali just had her grandmother's necklace stolen,
If this does not constitute a bad day, than I give up.
Merlin is hired to retrieve the necklace.
Now watch the sparkles fly!
Loved the characters + the storytelling !
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can't wait for the next book in this series.

Merlin has never had a place that he felt he fit in 100%. Daly is struggling with her navy career ending abruptly. Someone is determined to own him by any means necessary. Will Merlin find his home? Will Daly find happiness?

I absolutely loved Merlin. I loved how kind hearted he was despite what he thought everyone thought of him. I didn't blame Daly for struggling, but loved how protective she was over Merlin. Great read and cannot wait for the next book in this series!

WOW!!

Where should I start, man Zoe you had me laughing all the way through Merlin and Dali story. He is funny as hell, and his mate very different in many ways but a bit alike..strange don't you think, but they fit well together. Another wizard scientist failed again, but we know we haven't heard the last of them, they will try something again soon. Another good one Zoe, so looking forward to Random and Natalie story..big fan as always Winzie19☺.

Merlin is known for telling wild stories... Now he has another

You might not think Dali would be the one to believe Merlin, but then pigeons stole her necklace and a cat with dragons wings showed up. Merlin is kind of a mess, and Dali is just the woman to clean it up. And Merlin is just the guy to bring some fun into her ordered life. They're kind of opposites but also perfect for each other. The plot is pretty fun too, with an entire circus of characters.
