Whoever said blood is thicker than water hasn’t met the Harrington family.
New York royalty, the Harrington family are old money with magic coursing through their entitled veins, and the only thing the Harringtons care less about than each other…is the law.
When Lester dies unexpectedly, his considerable estate is set to pass to his surviving heirs. But the coroner, Kasey Chase, has ruled Lester’s death a homicide, sparking a family feud that sees the Harrington heirs turn on each other in a lethal struggle where the only prize for second place is death.
With unlimited resources and a callous disregard for human life, the Harrington’s have to be stopped before the city pays the price for their petty war. Caught in the middle, Kasey is left fighting for her life. Fortunately, she’s been hiding a secret of her own.

A Date With Death By S. C. Stokes This a prequel story for the series. It sure hooked me! Casey is a witch that works as assistance Coroner. She is told that the super rich Harringtons have asked for her services but she had to go there. It was a job her boss would NOT let her refuse. What happens there and the mystery is action packed and entertaining! Really enjoyed it!
This was definitely unexpected and ended up being a pretty fun escape read for a few hours. Magic, mayhem, murder, and a mystery all kept me turning the pages and coming back for more.
It was interesting, but quite slow going at the start. It seemed that the author liked there to be a lot of discussion or inner debate before anybody actually did something. Then it all changed and it just became a series of fights and improbable near misses. The story starts to go downhill from this point. Part of my problem was I didn’t understand what were Kasey’s abilities. Very early in book Kasey could instantly make a scalpel fly across the room and melt a wall to fill in a whole with just a word, during the early fights she couldn’t seem to do anything, it wasn’t until less than a third from the end that we see something of what she could do. Then I was left wondering why didn’t she do something while people are dying around her.
Overall it was an OK story and Kasey certainly has potential. If possible I may have given 2.5 stars, but Kasey is interesting enough for me to make this three and I will be trying the next book.
Kasey Chase, New York city coroner and druid witch, lives a very tame life filled with an uneventful daily routine. She is surprised when her supervisor calls her in for a very unorthodox work assignment. Kasey is quickly wisked away to the incredible estate of the uber rich Harrington family where she is threatened and forced to fight for her very existence. Fast-paced action evolves quickly in this storyline, and once it does, hang on because it doesn't let up until the very end. Gripping! Great Read!!!!!
I was quite frustrated that I'd bought a book where the author kept banging on and on about the one thing. Beginning, interesting, end predictable. Middle, truly boring. One or two deaths are a story. More añd how to is of no interest to me. This is the book to go to if you want to know how many ways there are to demolish a mansion.
Sam Stokes - Conjuring A Coroner Bk 0 A Date With Death Reviewed 3/4/20 Read 3/2-3/20 Being a Coroner normally is not dangerous unless you are a “Witch, or you are named Kasey Chase!!!
Having moved clear across the country to start a life without her past. Kasey Chase is a Corner in New York City, working to pay off student loans and supporting herself. Unlike other coroners, Kasey sometimes can see much more simply by the fact she was born a witch with the ability to see the future, as she was prescient. She had finally come to terms with the fact after having to deal with a terrible time growing up, not understanding the visions that occasionally were horrible that she had experienced. People that she encountered, including cadavers, could thrust her into a vision of their lives.
Today as she labored through her work, as there had been cutbacks, and they were short-handed, the phone rang. Her boss was at the end of the line, she had a special job that she wanted Kasey to do. She would be picked up shortly to conduct a field examination. The request had come down from the mayor's office, it had to be handled with care, she assured her boss that she would. Not even her boss had been told the location or the name of the person. Everything was very hush-hush and mysterious. The chauffeur would not tell her anything except for her to try and relax. Arriving at the most spectacular house she had ever seen; Kasey could only wonder where this would lead her??? And lead her it does, now for the rest of the story, Available now.
What did I like? If you have read any of the works from our author, Samuel Stokes, then you know that you are in for a treat. His “Conjuring A Coroner Series is the most amazing set of books that are filled with more action than a bee in the Springtime. Kasey Chase is one astonishing little witch that has had so much to deal with and fights with a vengeance. Bursting with a fierce sense of justice, and not just a little curiosity that most often leads her into more trouble than the norm. She is one of my favorite characters that keep my Urban Fantasy needs to be filled to the top!
What will you like? Well, my friends, this book is packed with more mystery and mysterious goings-on, that you will have whiplash just trying to keep up with it. Murder, deception, deceit, witchcraft, and topped off with an intriguing and mysterious murder. Now add to the mix the staff of the billionaire that will be left out in the cold if the right heir does not inherit the money. When you throw in the double-crossing heirs to billions of dollars, then you know you are going to have an exciting read. Only time will tell which one will be the winner, with the reluctant help of Kasey!
For the author....you need a good editor. You would find a gazelle on a savanna; not a prairie. The sexual harassment should have been handled through HR or her female boss; not violence. He could bring her up on assault charges. That said the story kept me interested and I finished it. Not too bad.
Bedtime audiobook. this one is the sort og extremely mediocre UF. I mean, It picked up towards the end, but the plot was painfully obvious. I guessed who the bad guy was at the start. Also, the author doesn't know basic stuff. Like how wine isn't flammable. There is this whole scene where she catches on fire, cause wine... You can douse a fire with wine if nothing else is available. So Yeah, dumb and mostly forgettable. I'm giving it two stars cause I actually finished it, and in theory really like the idea of a coroner protagonist
I so like this book. Kasey is a witch (who doesn't want anyone to know) who works in coroner's office as a a forensic pathologist. Kasey uses her magic to sense what really happened to the dead. She is strong, snarky and smart. The plot was unexpected and I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the series. This is the prequel to the and didn't disappoint.
Very enjoyable read. Kasey is intriguing character who knows herself and is confident in herself. She has secrets which it keeps her cautious but doesn't stop her curious nature. She may be running for her life but she is determined to solve the riddle of what's going on at the Harrington's. And there is a lot going on. The family kinda reminded me of the family in Knives Out. Otherwise it takes a twisted turn once the will is read.
Kasey is a NYC Medical Examiner who is hiding her magic abilities from the world, magic and non-magic alike. When she's called to provide her professional services in secret, the world she's hiding from finds her again.
I'm not a huge murder mystery fan, so this probably wasn't as entertaining for me. Though the story starts out a bit slow, it's well written. And not too long after the exposition it's all gas.
Well, this is a book I won’t forget in a hurry. A Date With Death is a prequel in the Conjuring A Coroner Series of books was written by S.C. Stokes and this is a series of books I can’t wait to dive into further.
This book is based on a witch named Kasey Chase, not the name given to her at birth but a name she uses to get through her life with as few problems as possible. She is coroner, dealing with death on a daily basis, sounds like a way to live a quiet life, spending her days finding out how people died. What most don’t know is she has a little help from her hidden gift as a witch, which is well and good until she does her boss a favour and ends up in a world of trouble.
S. C. Stokes has built an incredible world in this book, built around a family that you would do your best to stay away from. There is a lot of visual violence in this story, but as I was reading it, I was so engrossed in the story that it wasn’t until I finished the story that I began to think about it. The family relationships are, well, they are very well thought out, complex and yet very simple on the surface, love and hate, how easy it is to fall from one into the other, how close love and hate truly are.
I enjoyed reading about Kasey, hoping that as the story progressed she would come out on top, and her, watching her solve the mystery, making mistakes and judging peoples characters, and finding out that it is never a wise thing to do, people are very deceptive and manipulative creatures, often looking out for our own best interests.
The main character, Kasey Chase grew during the course of this story, you see a definite change from the first scene to the very last one, in fact, I had a good chuckle. I was drawn into this story from the very beginning, and it held my attention, once I began reading, I just wanted to keep reading until it was finished. It was fast paced and action full. I have read other stories in this genre that I have enjoyed, and this one is as good as any I have read previously. I read the blurb and I would have read this book just from the blurb. This book was generously gifted to me by the author S. C. Stokes.
I came across this series and thought it looked interesting. I've loved TV shows where the ME helped solve murders so I thought it would be a good read. I was right! This theme has a lot of potential, a new crime in each book, a new body to tell her their story.
I got this book and the series from Amazon on the Kindle Deal of the Day.
It's a short introduction to Kasey and her skill set. The prompts are for this book. It's a prequel to the series "Conjuring a Coroner".
2, Inheritance, YES! This murder is all about the inheritance.
6, Under 200 pages, it's an introduction to the series, book 0.5.
11, Secrets, everyone has one, or more than one.
14, survival, she has to survive long enough to get away from this place and they're trying to kill her.
16, 7 Deadly Sins, Greed. Most definitely greed.
20, Siblings, there are horrendous siblings in this book.
23, Alliterative title, book title-A Date with Death or the series title-Conjuring a Coroner
31, Workplace, it's her job, she's called to a residence to investigate a suspicious death. She does interact with coworkers while at the office before and after the investigation.
44, Contemporary setting, it's in the here and now.
50, Related to murder, she's a coroner investigating a suspicious death. "Death" is in the title.
This book has a lot of killing in it. No romance, just a lot of killing. It's a easy read. I hope the series is good too. I will probably read this again someday.
What a great prequel to the whole Kasey story, from the Conjuring A Coroner set. First I want to thank Mr Stokes for sending me this book for an honest review. I find it a privilege to have the opportunity to read his works. With that we find Kasey a relatively new coroner being singled out to go off premise for the city coroner office to figure out a murder of one of the richest men around. We are placed in a very dysfunctional family environment with a mess to figure out about the deceased and who will inherit it all. This of course creates unbelievable sibling rivalry which causes all sorts of chaos and war with Kasey stuck in the middle of it all. This journey is not one to miss for Kasey fans and beware, there is quite a bit of violence, some a bit disturbing. It is a fun ride none the less and of course Kasey does get to the bottom of it. There is some pretend witchcraft and as mentioned a lot of violence, think war, this is not a book for those who shy away from those things, but it is a clean tale with no romantic interludes. Okay for older teens. I wouldn’t recommend younger teen because of the violence. This is definitely a fun fast exciting read.
“A Date With Death is an interesting prequel to a series about Kasey Chase, a medical examiner in New York who is also an unregistered witch with the ability of to precognition. She is known for her unique abilities to assist law enforcement in solving crimes.
When Casey’s boss calls to inform her that she has been selected to handle a delicate situation among one of the wealthiest families she has no idea how much danger she is in. Luckily her intelligence and witchy magic might just be the very things that turn the tide in her favor.
I enjoyed the world of Casey Chase as well as her character development. There was also plenty of mystery, intrigue and kick butt action. The reason I didn’t give this read 5 stars is because I really was hoping there was going to be incorporation of a few characters that would be featured in future installments of this series that would be friends of Kasey. Yet, the only character on a moving forward basis is a jerk. I hope that the author incorporates a best friend or live interest in future installments otherwise this series will become stale quickly.
A Date With Death (Conjuring a Coroner #0) by S.C. Stokes 3* Writing and copy editing are good. However that's the best I can say for it. It really feels like a 'I need to hack out a quick prequel that I can sell for free', and that little care was spent on plot or plotting. The battle scenes, which take up much of the book, don't feel authentic - and sure don't feel like they need magic. It feels like the author had a plot outline for a thriller that would have involved grenade launchers, and other heavy infantry weapons - and repurposed it for magic. Honestly, the magic here detracted from the already not entirely believable plot. Also. One guy sole owner of a Fortune 100 (or 50?) company is unlikely. When he's 'old money', not e.g. Elon Musk, it becomes even more improbable. That he can get away with totally ignoring the law enforcement agencies and just do whatever he wants, really, really doesn't work. If this was the first book of this author's I'd read, I'd strike them from my reading list and never even look at another book of theirs. This is a HORRIBLE intro to the series.
This is a review for A Date with Death by S.C. Stokes If any of you had a chance to see the movie mystery Knives Out this past fall you will notice a similarity with the crazy Harrington family and the old mansion setting. Lester the family patriarch has died leaving a large estate and a lot of money, as in billions, to his heirs. Kasey Chase the city coroner is ordered to investigate to see if it was a natural death or homicide. As Kasey arrives to the old estate she is sworn to secrecy by blood oath not to divulge any information or happenings at the estate, because they are all witches, but so is Kasey and the family does not know. There is a major twist at the reading of the will that shocked me and just made me roar with laughter at wills stipulation. I just love it. Needless to say all h**l breaks loose and the story just goes nuts with twist and turns everywhere. It's a fun exciting read, don't miss it. I was given a copy of A Date with Death for free in exchange for an honest review.
Ok--- Not quite what I was expecting! Very violent with a lot of violence, and murder and destruction! Kasey is a witch working in the Coroners Office and is asked to perform an autopsy on site of the wealthiest man in Manhattan. He has 5 children and Kasey has determined that the man had been murdered. At the reading of the will you find out that the 5 adult children have been told that only one will inherit the 65 Billion Dollar fortune. The murdered man has basically said the last one standing gets the money and has told them to kill each other! It turns out they are witches and magicians and they have a battle to wipe each other out and Kasey is trapped in the midst of the chaos and destruction.
I have been seeking out more Urban Fantasy to read, and I felt like this book/prequel definitely fit the bill! I really liked Kasey, and how she wound up being a coroner due to both her powers and being an outcast in the magic community. I really didn’t know what to expect from her special assignment, but wow what a shit show! Seems kind of messed-up that her boss, who she greatly respects, would send her right into the lion’s den like that. Her boss I would have imagined should have had “some idea of what she was getting Kasey into. I feel like I learned a lot about Kasey, even though she was in peril pretty much the entire book. She’s a badass, and she has a very complicated past. I don’t have a full feel for her powers either, but she is uber powerful. I will check out more soon.
Really liked the idea of this - a witch working as a coroner who can, by touch, sense how the person died - murdered or not. However, this book went from the possibly realistic to the totally outrageously unbelievable when the heroine is sent on "special assignment" - which lands her in a house of wizards and witches who begin killing everybody in sight when the "immature and selfish" heirs find out the patriarch was murdered. Why? Because murder changes the will so that the last surviving child gets all - a billion dollar empire. It was so improbable and unrealistic as the siblings just start blasting each other to the point where the entire mansion and attached buildings are destroyed. Seriously? Way over the top for me. Very disappointing after the intriguing start.
I so enjoy Kasey’s character! I’m glad Samuel Stokes decided to write another story with her. In this book, there is lots of action as Kasey gets caught in the crossfire, literally, after performing an autopsy that proved the victim’s death was a murder. But who was the murderer? This mystery kept looming as each suspect was eliminated (literally). Too many close calls had Kasey fighting for her life. Samuel Stokes descriptions of the action scenes had me riveted to the pages rooting for Kasey all the way. I especially liked the epilogue. I know what it’s like to work in an office and have your food stolen out of the fridge. Kasey handled it superbly! Yessss!
I'm used to a lot of exposition in urban fantasy but starting off by info-dumping on your protagonist's history? Said protagonist is a coroner/witch/precog (though she actually sees stuff in the past as well clairvoyant might be more accurate) hired by a deceased billionaire's estate to do the autopsy discreetly. Ooops, looks like he's been murdered by one of his kids. And his will gives everything to the last child standing so more murders are in the offing. That's a great mystery set-up but it rapidly switched gears into a lot of generic magical battles. And the killer turns out to be exactly who I suspect because they were so obviously The Last Person You'd Suspect ...
Captivating is too tame to describe how much I enjoyed this book! I felt like I was back at the beginning of a favorite author's hit series, clearly indicating I've found another new favorite author and hopefully favorite series. You're going along for the journey the entire read, as she's putting together clues and making wild leaps, so are you and her personality just jumps off the page, endearing her as a favorite character all the while. Can't wait to catch up on the rest of the books!!
This is a story that's exceptionally written. With arcane magic, treachery, lies, betrayal along the road, and murder; you're sure to have fun reading it. After expecting a story along the lines of The Good Doctor or The Resident, I was pleasantly surprised to find a witch with the Sight autopsy a powerful wizard with a family full of deceitful children. As chaos ensues, Kasey finds herself in the fight of her life. Happy reading, I can't wait to get on to the next one.
Fantasy action without any romance, none, not even a potential partner.
It was thankfully a quick read, as it had unfortunately both character & plot issues. The main characters made little to no sense and were all but caricatures. Lester, over the top sneering rich dude. Vincent, obsessive, one note fixated concierge. And then there is Kasey, who has powers, and is a jujitsu master apparently.
The plot twists were so obvious I was embarrassed. And the rules of Kasey’s magic kept changing. She could heal herself but never thought to heal James after the car accident? And then, for no reason given, her powers were suddenly supernova?
This felt messy, and I really never understood what genre lane it was supposed to exist in.
This was a nice change of pace mixing crime thriller whodunnits with magic and fantasy. I felt like a lot of the writing was unnecessary and I ended up jumping onto the next sentence of each character. The ending was very predictable but I enjoyed reading it. It was mostly dialogue and fighting throughout the entire story though so it would have been nice to have some parts to break that theme up.
I was expecting a story along the lines of a medical television series with a little magic mixed in. What I found was a coroner, who is a witch, performing an autopsy on a man, a wizard, who was worth sixty-five billion dollars. That's in just the first few chapters. Witches, wizards, arcane magic, deceit, lies, betrayal, confusion, come together in a brutal war among siblings. Let the chaos begin!
