Spring Boot: Up and Running: Building Cloud Native Java and Kotlin Applications

Rate this book
With over 75 million downloads per month, Spring Boot is the most widely used Java framework available. Its ease and power have revolutionized application development from monoliths to microservices. Yet Spring Boot's simplicity can also be confounding. How do developers learn enough to be productive immediately? This practical book shows you how to use this framework to write successful mission-critical applications. Mark Heckler from VMware, the company behind Spring, guides you through Spring Boot's architecture and approach, covering topics such as debugging, testing, and deployment. If you want to develop cloud native Java or Kotlin applications with Spring Boot rapidly and effectively (using reactive programming, building APIs, and creating database access of all kinds) this book is for you.

This book should be named "Spring Boot: Down and Crashing."
After Ch. 6, the code is not runnable due to the "planefinder" API server. The author thinks that readers can obtain the data from a proprietary data-selling company, but he didn't even bother to tell the readers how to get them.

Disappointing piece of work

Trivial repeating sample use cases, that doesn’t even show how to handle JPA relations and complex queries. You can find better info in the Spring Boot doc and on the Baeldung site.

I am very disappointed. I expected much more since it is published by O'Reilly and was promoted on Spring blog. I finished only because it was a gift. When you are already working with Spring, you learn too little. When you are a beginner, you may be overwhelmed (by related concepts) I guess.
So waste of many and time.

This book primarily introduces the various features of Spring Boot, providing a broad overview. However, it's worth noting that it doesn't delve deeply into any specific chapter. This approach is beneficial for those seeking a general understanding of Spring Boot's capabilities but may not fully satisfy those looking for in-depth insights or guidance on handling complex challenges.

This limitation is particularly evident and somewhat frustrating in the chapters on testing and reactive programming, both essential topics. While these chapters offer vital information, they leave the reader feeling like they have only scratched the surface of these topics.

Mark covers a big ground. He scratches the surface on some parts and dips the toes in others. The code examples are well done and explained. As of the time of this review, all of it work with close to no extra work.

Recommended for everyone who want to start with Spring Boot or also to get more insight of what Spring Boot has to offer. Of course Mark doesn't cover everything. That will require volumes, but it is a very good start.

Been using this as a additional info to learn about spring boot while learning by doing by myself. The information in this book really makes sense to what am i doing and it supports me.

Its cover the thing from the very basic spring init, rest api annotation, connect db, testing, security, deploy until reactive programming that i aint understand it yet.

So far so good cause i need additional info besides only doing with spring boot and this books well covered.

Good for Spring newcomers but if you work with spring for 1-2 years than there is minimal new information.
