Crochet Mystery #14

One for the Hooks

Rate this book
Molly Pink and the Tarzana Hookers must unwind a fiendish skein in national bestselling author Betty Hechtman's fourteenth Crochet mystery.

These are the dog days of August, but you won't catch the Tarzana Hookers crochet club napping. While Molly Pink knits together an idea for a new project, Miami Wilson busily converts a house she inherited into a rental property. But Miami is left shorthanded when Sloan Renner, the woman helping her clean out the house ends up dead under a pile of smelly seafood.

A large drone had flown over the property discarding mollusk shells all over the backyard. Was it an accident? An ill-fated prank by neighbors up in arms about a rental house in their cul-de-sac? Witnesses clam up when Molly's ex, homicide detective Barry Greenberg, tries to get information, but he thinks Molly may be able to get them to open up to her.

When Molly learns about Sloan's seafood allergy, she suspects that the woman's death was no accident. Can she bait the hook to catch the culprit, or will the killer keep raising shell?

I grew up on the south side of Chicago and in a very busy weekend, got married, graduated college and moved to Los Angeles.

Although my degree is in Fine Arts, all I ever wanted to be was a writer and I've been doing it in one form or another for as long as I can remember. My shining moments in elementary and high school always involved stories or poetry I'd written. I wrote news stories and a weekly column in my college newspaper. My first job out of college was working on the newsletter of a finance company. I worked for a public relations firm and wrote press releases and biographies. Later I wrote proposals for video projects and television shows that went through various stages of development.

I tried writing screenplays and wrote three. I sold one and another was a winner in a Writers' Digest contest.

I was lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom and did all kinds of volunteering at my son's schools including editing and writing several newsletters.

I wrote essays and small pieces that ran in the Los Angeles Times, the Daily News and Woman's Day among others. My short romantic and mystery fiction appeared in Woman's World, and Futures magazine.

From time I was a thirteen-year-old babysitter cooking for the kids I babysat, I dreamed of writing a book about babysitting. It took a little longer than I'd expected, but BLUE SCHWARTZ AND NEFERTITI'S NECKLACE was published in 2006.

My affair with crochet began in Las Vegas. I had always had a fascination with crochet, particularly granny squares, but thought there was some magic involved with making them that was beyond me. And then everything changed that day in Vegas when I saw the kids' kit in FAO Schwartz. If the instructions were easy enough for kids, I thought they might work for me.

My first granny square was missing a corner, but when I tried again, all four corners were there. I was in awe of my own accomplishment. I had found the magic. I went granny square crazy until pretty soon I didn't need directions anymore. Then I learned there were more squares than just basic grannies and I made squares with sunflowers in the middle and other patterns. I moved beyond squares and made flowers, hearts, bookmarks and more.

I was in love with crochet and began to make scarves, purses, afghans, and shawls. I started carrying my hooks everywhere. A plane trip became a pile of granny square wash cloths, or part of a shawl. A vacation in Hawaii turned into a tote bag.

And now I get to write about it...

The means of murder certainly changes as technology advances! I loved this latest in Betty Hechtman’s Crochet Mystery series! Visiting Molly, her family, friends, and coworkers is one thing I always look forward to. We continue to learn new and interesting things about our favorite characters and enjoy how well-defined new characters are. For instance, Adele is now “The Adele, a well-followed vlogger. She is still a source of LOL humor that fans won’t want to miss!

Molly’s personal life continues to be an adventure! Her older son moved himself and his pregnant lady friend into Molly’s home when they were caught between homes and their television careers were on hold. Her “plus one, Mason, does pro bono legal work along with his celebrity law practice for a group getting new trials for innocent prisoners new and has a plan for himself and Molly. Barry, the detective Molly used to date, also wants her help with a case that she has an interest in a first for him!

Molly was invited to look at a large stash of yarn at the home of Miami, a young woman who inherited her aunt’s property. She and a couple members of the local crochet group, Tarzana Hookers, go to see the yarn, and come up with a plan to use it if purchased for Shedd and Royal Books and More. The “More includes a yarn and accessories department which serves as a meeting place for the Hookers to gather. When they return to pick up the boxes of yarn, Miami’s Realtor, Sloan, is killed in a freak accident with a drone. While it is assumed the neighbors protesting Miami and Sloan’s plan to rent rooms from her home were behind it, Molly thinks the drone was aimed at Sloan. At the request of Mason and her older son, Molly tries to stay out of it, even though she has been instrumental in helping identify and catch killers in the past.

The plot twists and turns kept this reader on her toes! I had no idea whodunit. It was a huge surprise to me whodunit and why! The author has gifted us with a fabulous mystery with one of my favorite long-time sleuths in what sounds like the coolest bookstore in California. Molly’s personal life was exciting to see and was presented with a great balance of mystery and personal. I was very pleased with the ending and looking forward to the next in series! It includes the perfect, easy scarf pattern. I highly recommend this to fans of well-written, humorous, intriguing cozy mysteries with a cast of characters that is like a family, bookstores, and crocheting. It can be read as a standalone, as sufficient backstory is given to follow it. You might just want to go back and read the rest!

From a thankful heart: I received an eARC of this book from the publisher through NetGalley, and this is my honest review.

Looking for a book with an intelligent and capable woman in her 50's as your heroine? Then look no further! You'll love the main character as well as her unique and diverse group of friends from the Tarzana Hookers...hookers as in crochet crafters that is. Once again Molly finds herself embroiled in drama that is equal parts her family and equal parts out of her control. Toss in a dead body, a past beau and you have the makings for an entertaining and explosive read! I am absolutely loving following the progression of these characters and definitely can't wait to see what comes next for them.

There is nothing I enjoy better than reading a book in this series by Betty Hechtman. Molly Pink is a strong character who really brings these books to life.
In One for the Hooks, a simple inquiry about a potential purchase of yarn sets the dynamics for an incredible story.
Molly once again becomes involved in the investigation while assisting her ex boyfriend, Barry.
Molly seems to be doing a lot of soul searching, and even though she loves her life, her job, and her friends, she wonders if it’s time for a change.
The ending left me speechless, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.
I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who enjoys a good solid mystery.

Molly Pink FINALLY chose the right guy.

Readers familiar with Betty Hechtman's A Crochet Mystery series will travel familiar terrain in this story centered upon Molly's investigation into the death of a woman who wore multiple career hats, including that of set designer and real estate agent.

As always, I was amazed at how quickly Molly, in her role as the bookstore employee who organizes store events, managed to pull together a gathering featuring yarn procured in the course of the suspicious death. I did that job, once upon a time. Granted, it was in the days before social media sites. Still, pulling together an event in less than a week is astounding.

As always, the pattern for the featured yarn project is included in the back of the book. I'm intrigued and have the crochet skills now to tackle this. Why not?

Typographical errors marred my enjoyment of the book, however. Hechtman really needs a better editor or proofreader.

Overall, it was a fun little romp. I'm thrilled that Molly finally decided to be with the right guy.

ONE FOR THE HOOKS is the fourteenth book in the Crochet Mystery series by Betty Hechtman and can be read as a standalone. While I’ve read a few of the first books in the series, I haven’t had a chance to catch up. However, I never felt lost in this newest release. The author has crafted a humorous cozy mystery featuring a fifty-something older woman sleuth, Molly Pink, one of the members of the Tarzana Hookers a crochet club. She combines books, lots of pets, garbage dumping drones, oodles of yarn, great friends, some romance, and a murder to create a read that had me glued to the pages. With twists and turns to keep the reader guessing, Ms. Hechtman pens an electrifying reveal and an ending that left me speechless and wanting to read the next book in this crafty series sooner than later. While I don’t crochet, I was intrigued that there is a unique, one-of-a-kind, crochet project at the back of the book, along with a recipe.

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When Molly Pink, assistant manager of Shedd & Royal Books & More, is asked by a friend if she wants to purchase a large stash of yarn for the store, she decides to look at it before making an offer. But by the time she makes the visit, it's turned into an excursion -- Adele seems to insist on tagging along, because her 'knowledge' is more extensive and she wants to record it for her new vlog; and Elise, one of the Tarzana Hookers, is insisting because she's begun selling real estate and thinks she might be able to undercut the agent already there. But it's never easy for Molly -- while at Miami Wilson's inherited home, the agent who invited Molly, Sloan Renner, is hit with a drone full of seafood shells, and killed.

Sure, the neighborhood is upset because Miami wants to turn her home into short-term rentals, and of course, this is a family street, so they don't want it; but someone has also been vandalizing her sign out front, and she refuses to be cowed. But who hates her enough to do this? With any one of the homeowners as suspects, even if the police think it was a freak accident, Molly's not so sure.

Then there's the problem of Molly's older son Peter, who has unexpectedly shown up at her home with his pregnant girlfriend in tow, moving in without notice, because his life has gone down the tubes. How can she turn him away? Although she seems to want to when the couple decide she might just be in their way while they entertain potential clients and want her to 'stay in her room'. (Seriously?)

But the kicker is her new life is about to take off. Her beau, high-powered attorney Mason Fields, has unexpectedly proposed marriage and Molly is stunned. It means her life is going to change; she'll be traveling with Mason, helping him on his Second Chance legal project, which helps innocent people get out of prison; and that also means she'll have to give up her job as assistant manager at Shedd & Royal. And what about her numerous pets -- who just got a new addition with Sloan's little dog Princess? It doesn't help that her ex, homicide detective Barry Greenberg, once again has asked for her help and doesn't like the idea of her going off with Mason.

Now Molly has a mountain of decisions to make, including who killed Sloan. Is she in over her head? Or will she be able to make this mountain into a molehill?...

This is the fourteenth book in the series, and I have read them all. While I have liked some better than most (and really didn't care for the first, to be honest here,) I have watched the changes in Molly's life with interest. Of course, there are things that bother me -- like Elise going crazy suddenly about being a real estate agent and trying to hound everyone into selling or using her services, including nagging Miami when she first meets her -- if I had an agent like her, I'd tell her I never intend to sell and don't know anyone who does. Elise has become annoying as heck. I also have to wonder about Peter. He supposedly had this great job in Hollywood, but never put any money in the bank? He has to move back in with his mother? Did he blow every penny he made? He should have had some sort of nest egg -- you'd think. Or the fact that Molly never confronted either Peter or Gabby about their treatment of her.

But this is because I notice details -- a lot. And though I let most details pass me by in books, because they are written for entertainment, after all -- I can't let them all pass by. I should. But I don't. Anyway, back to the book...

I did like the mystery itself. We have the woman die at the beginning, and it looks as if it's connected to Miami using her home for short-term rentals, and suddenly some of the neighbors recognize Molly going into the home and assume that she is having something to do with it. So now she's involved, whether she wants to be or not, and when Barry asks for her help, she doesn't refuse. Molly is supposed to be only asking questions (yeah, sure) but she and her best friend Dinah start playing their 'Sherlock Holmes' game to try and find out who the killer is. This, of course, brings the killer's interest to Molly, and now she becomes a secondary target.

But watching Molly navigate her role in the bookstore and assure Mrs. Shedd that everything is just as it's supposed to be, try to figure out who the killer is, and decide who and what she really wants for her life is actually fun. There's a lot going on here.

Then we have the ending -- which is more than we expected. While it was a rather silly conclusion as far as the murder goes, there was a bigger surprise in store...and while I haven't made up my mind as to whether I'm happy or not, it gives me something to look forward to in the next book. Recommended.

I was given a copy from the publisher and NetGalley but this in no way influenced my review.

Molly Pink, bookstore employee and the Tarzana Hooker 's crocheting club are at it again! When the interior designer of a rental property is murdered, the suspicion falls on the neighborhood folks who didn't want it in the first place. Molly has to solve the mystery before the murderer finds another target!

The series is enjoyable and has so many interesting characters - like the Tarzana Hookers, Molly's friends, kids and boyfriends. There's never a dull moment. The only thing is like to see is Molly be more firm with her adult children. Other than that, it's a fun series, especially if you enjoy crafting cozies!

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I have been following Molly through 14 books and am never disappointed. She is a fifty something year old woman working in a book store and active in the Tarzana Hookers crochet group. She also stumbles on and snoops into murders which usually does not go over well with Barry her now ex boyfriend and detective. However, this time is different when Barry actually asks her to see what she can find out talking to friends and acquaintances about a recent unusual accidental death she witnessed.

I have been following the relationships Molly has with Barry and then Mason for quite a while and I am happy in the progress made in this book. The mystery had a creative and relevant ending and Adele, now The Adele, has once again taken everything to a new level. Thanks to Crooked Lane Books and NetGalley for an ARC. The opinions expressed are my own.

Having missed the first books in Betty Hechtman's "A Bay Crochet Mystery" series, I decided to take the plunge and dive straight in at book fourteen with this novel, One for the Hooks and I would have missed a treat if I hadn't!

Molly Pink is in her fifties and is a really strong character. She is employed by a bookshop owner where wool and yarn is also sold, called Shedd & Royal Books and More. She runs Tarzana Hookers crochet club and has many other interests. When a shop customer dies after having the misfortune to be in the wrong place when a drone drops its smelly seafood rubbish load on her, Molly steps up to the plate to investigate.

I loved the premise for this fabulous cozy mystery which was a change from the norm. Brimming with madness and mayhem it was rich in humour and there were soupçons of romance. The mystery itself kept me guessing and I enjoyed the subplots regarding Molly's family. The author's writing style was transfixing and her plot was well-structured throughout. Possessing an intriguing cast of colourful characters, One for the Hooks is a zany ride to the finale and will delight many lovers of cozy mysteries. I am hoping to read this series from the beginning which might take some time!

Aargh, this woman had me grinding my teeth, she was such a pushover, allowing her son and his girlfriend to demeaned her like that. Molly Pink’s character gave me a frustrating headache, she seemed to be missing some backbone, but no matter, this cozy had some gum to it even though Molly was annoying. It was indeed a cozy, captivating, intriguing, and entertaining read.

One for the Hooks by Betty Hechtman.
This is a new author to me and I am instantly in love with her work. I understand that there is more books to this series, but it was easy to fall in with the characters.
The story was easy and uncomplicated as were the characters. There is a group of women in a crochet group but Molly is a modern Sherlock Holmes who can’t stop until the end. Barry is a detective and also Molly’s ex and Mason is dating Molly and in love with her but wants her to, in a nutshell to give up her life to be with him.
But, the ending was a shocker and I was not expecting what happened.
I am now looking into reading this series from the beginning.

I requested and received an advance copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

One for the Hooks by Betty Hechtman is the 14th A Crochet Mystery. It can be read as a standalone for those new to the series. I thought One for the Hooks was well-written with developed characters. I like that Molly Pink is a mature woman who is a clever and capable. I was not a fan of the way Molly dealt with her son, Peter in this book. I thought she would set down some rules for the pushy son and his cold girlfriend. Molly most do some soul searching when Mason makes her an offer. The whodunit had multiple suspects (a whole neighborhood), misdirection, and a unique method of murder. One detail early in the book is all that is needed to solve the crime (I am not telling you which one). I enjoyed following Molly and Dinah as they dug up information and got themselves into trouble in pursuit of justice. Barry, of course, wants Molly’s information, but he is reluctant to share. He also does not always appreciate her theories (you would think he would have learned to trust her by now). There are cute pets, gorgeous yarns, fun with friends, plus book and yarn events. I enjoyed the one-of-a-kind scarf project that Molly came up with using the yarns she purchased for the shop. Adele was even more over-the-top than usual thanks to her vlog. Her outfits match her ego (loud and large). I laughed often while reading One for the Hooks. I am eager for the next A Crochet Mystery after reading the ending. One for the Hooks is an entertaining cozy mystery with ritzy yarns, a significant other’s suggestion, a problematic progeny, a daring drone, a curious killing, sensational Serendipity scarves, and the plucky Molly Pink.

Assistant bookstore manager Molly Pink has a lot on her hands--including new housemates, her older son and his pregnant girlfriend--and her long-time "casual" boyfriend who suddenly wants to get married. That's not to mention some of her co-workers and customers at the bookstore where she also runs the needlework section. But when she sees a woman die in front of her, everything else takes second place. Her ex-boyfriend, a police detective, asks her help in relaying gossip about the death to him, which gives Molly all the excuse she needs to poke around the scene of the terrible accident--or was it murder? While Molly finds the culprit, she also finds herself in danger.

One for the Hooks is the fourteenth book in Crochet Mystery series by Betty Hechtman but can be read as a standalone.

I have been reading this series out of order for years and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I never had the problem of not being able to get into the story or to find it confusing.

I like this series very much, it is a perfect blend of mystery, romance and life that I find very appealing. Other aspects of the book do not deter from the mystery, which is always well presented, all clues clearly set out so it is easy for the reader to follow the trail should she wish to.

I equally enjoy reading about main protagonists personal life, her work in the library as well as her numerous engagements in the crochet club, even though I am not a crocheter myself I still enormously delight in reading about their various projects, as much as I relish reading about mystery. For me these different aspects only make the story more realistic and believable.

Although the mystery is as always very intriguing the great surprise awaits the readers at the end of the book.

What a fun cozy with some crocheting thrown in! Molly works at a book store and crochets with a group called the Tarzana Hookers. Sloan, a regular at the book store is a jack-of-all-trades. She does staging for selling homes, creating set designs, and she's a real estate agent. She has a client that has some yarn to sell, so Molly, Sloan and a couple of other hookers troop to the house. While there a drone drops a load of garbage on Sloan, which kills her. Molly worries that it was on purpose and not just a random act of vandalism against the home owner. Miami is the home owner and she wants to convert the majority of the house into an airbnb type place. This has all the neighbors in an up roar.

This is such a unique mystery. I mean, who gets killed my a load of garbage being dumped on them. Plus, Molly is being pulled in several directions. Her ex-boyfriend, a detective on the case, asks her to keep her ears open for any gossip about the murderer. There is still an attraction there, but her new boyfriend has proposed. Adding to all the turmoil, her son has moved back home with his pregnant girlfriend. The story made me giggle at times and I love all the animals. The crocheting is the cherry on top.

Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book and offer my honest opinion.

This is the first book that I have read by Betty Hechtman and anyone who knows me knows that I love books, animals, and a great Cozy Mystery series! How I have missed reading this author is beyond me. I quickly became immersed in this story and the main character Molly's life and romance issues. The plotline was very original, death by a Drone dumping a pile of smelly seafood on the victim? Molly just happens to be present at this crime scene and her former love interest Detective Barry Greenberg just happens to arrive on the scene.

Molly has a complicated life at the present, her son Peter and pregnant girlfriend have moved in and taken over her house, Peter did not endear himself to me at all. Molly has a wonderful new love interest Mason but he may be too perfect and Detective Barry keeps finding ways to make himself relevant in Molly's life.

I enjoyed the plot, characters, and setting of the book. I found the antics of the Tarzana Hookers hilarious! The villain in the book took me by surprise and Molly Pink is one clever and funny sleuth. I find myself wanting to read more of this series. There is a bit of a cliffhanger at the end so I look forward to the next installment. In the meantime, I will go back and read the series from the beginning.

This was so much fun to read and the first book I have read in this series but after the ending I want more! Molly Pink works for a Bookstore that the Tarzana Hookers met out for crocheting. She is helping a friend Miami get rid of some yarn from a house that they are selling. While over there at the house Sloan gets hit by a drone and dies. Was it murder or an accident Molly sets out to find out? Molly hooks up with her old boyfriend Barry who is a detective to help him figure this murder out. But Molly is involved with Mason now and Mason is not real happy about Molly helping Barry. Mason is trying to get Molly to go to Kansas with him for a court case he is working on. I laughed so hard about Molly getting herself into predicaments in the neighbors yards where Sloan was killed. Great fun read and I will definitely be reading more of this author.

I received this ARC for free from Netgalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Molly is being pulled in many directions in this book. Though I previously stopped reading this series at book 5, I don’t feel like I missed enough backstory to keep me from following this book. All the same characters are present, and their quirks and foibles haven’t changed. The relationships between Molly and Barry and Molly and Mason have evolved, and at the end you’re in for a big surprise!

I personally love to crochet and I love reading cozy mysteries about people who crochet, especially in such a great atmosphere as the bookstore where Molly works. Molly‘s son Peter returns home in this book with a pregnant girlfriend and no job prospects. Things start off rough but Molly knows win to put her foot down and went to back off. One thing I didn’t miss in this book was Molly‘s mom and her singing group, they were on tour and didn’t show up until the last few chapters.

This is a consistently really good series. If you haven’t read all the books you can read them out of order and still keep track of everything that’s going on.

I just reviewed One for the Hooks by Betty Hechtman. #OnefortheHooks #NetGalley

I have not read the previous titles in this series but I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.

Molly Pink, in her capacity as an assistant manager at a book/craft store is offered a cache of specialty yarns. When she and a group of helpers go to look over the yarn a member their party of crafters is killed in what appears to be a drone accident. Molly becomes convinced it was no accident and is looking into the circumstances surrounding the death. While this is going on she is also dealing with a son who moved into her house unexpectedly, two men in her life and what to do with the yarn.

I can usually figure out whodunnit but this book surprised me with the culprit. I recommend this book but only gave it 4 stars because of a few typos which don't detract from the story being told. It's well worth reading.

So much to offer the reader. The yarn shop is a cleaver idea, yummy treats from the cafe, a mystery, and a romance. The characters are a nice blend of people to like and a few annoying ones thrown in for interest. The grown son coming home was funny. Had that happen to me in the past so could relate. The mystery was a good one with a twist at the guilty party. I thought the book was interesting and I liked it.

Molly Pink is approached by a realtor who is cleaning out a home to purchase a large lot of yarn. When she goes back to pick it up, the realtor dies in a freak accident when she is attacked by a drone.

Thinking it is nothing more than a prank by neighbors who are unhappy that the homeowner plans to rent rooms out to strangers, the police are ready to move on. Molly, however, believes the realtor was the target, not the homeowner. Now she has to bring together multiple threads and pieces of information to figure out who wanted the woman dead and why.

Another fun entry in this long running series that brings crochet projects and recipes along with the whodunit. Well written with a strong protagonist, you can’t help but relate to Molly and the Hookers.

Molly Pink arrives home to find the lights on and the animals out. She prepares for battle only to discover its her oldest son Peter and his girlfriend Gabby. They announce they're moving in for awhile!! So Molly stays in her room and lets them have run of the house. Meanwhile Sloan Renner invites Molly and her friends to take a look at some yarn she runs across while staging a house.. On the day Molly goes to pick up the yarn a drone flies over and drops some yucky stuff on Sloan. Killing her within minutes. But why?? Sure the neighbors were opposed to the home owner renting out the house but would they go as far as murder to stop that? This book was full of non-
stop action and likeable characters. I enjoyed catching up with Molly and her band of The Tarzana Hookers.

This was a light-hearted cozy read. I read several books at the beginning of this series, and then I drifted away. They're definitely a bit outlandish! But coming back to the series, it was nice to catch up with Molly and her Hookers (crochet hookers--get your mind out of the gutter). The mixture of crochet, murder, and drones is a kind of irresistible mash-up! The dialog and relationships don't feel exactly real, but it makes for a fun escape from the real world. You know, my day may not be great, but I'm not being attacked by a drone, at least!

Killer surprised me

I love this series. I love her friendship with Dinah and these other "hookers" in the crochet group. Even annoying Adele is fin in her own way. Barry asks for Molly's help once again as she was found in the middle of the crime scene. The whole aspect of a person renting out rooms in their house to the detriment of the neighbors seems realistic. I know I wouldn't like it. I like how Molly is considering Mason's offer of a new life but is conflicted. There are several suspects to choose from and I was surprised by who it was. Great writing of the story. I hope there is another book after this because we need to see the results of Molly's decision.

I have not read this author and picked because it contain my two hobbies- crochet and mystery! Needless to say there is a little bit of romance within also.
This is more than likely a series but the book can be read as a stand alone. I really enjoyed this nice mystery and the way the author incorporated crochet within the story. At the end there is a pleasant surprise but you need to read it to find out what it is😊

Molly Pink is back at it as tries to help her ex Barry solve a murder. This was a fun mystery that is fast paced and easy to read. It has a love triangle type situation going on. I wasn’t thrilled with Molly’s sons character and the ending didn’t seem realistic. Overall a great addition to the series. I love the crochet group!
