Savage Energies: Lessons of Myth and Ritual in Ancient Greece
We often think of classical Greek society as a model of rationality and order. Yet as Walter Burkert demonstrates in these influential essays on the history of Greek religion, there were archaic, savage forces surging beneath the outwardly calm face of classical Greece, whose potentially violent and destructive energies, Burkert argues, were harnessed to constructive ends through the interlinked uses of myth and ritual.
For example, in a much-cited essay on the Athenian religious festival of the Arrephoria, Burkert uncovers deep connections between this strange nocturnal ritual, in which two virgin girls carried sacred offerings into a cave and later returned with something given to them there, and tribal puberty initiations by linking the festival with the myth of the daughters of Kekrops. Other chapters explore the origins of tragedy in blood sacrifice; the role of myth in the ritual of the new fire on Lemnos; the ties between violence, the Athenian courts, and the annual purification of the divine image; and how failed political propaganda entered the realm of myth at the time of the Persian Wars.

El primer libro que me leo del autor, y a pesar de que Grecia no ye uno de mis fuertes, creo que seguiré leyendo más obras del autor

EL ORIGEN SALVAJE (2011) lleva por subtÃtulo "Ritos de sacrificio y mito entre los griegos" y es de Walter Burkert. Quién es Burkert? Un filologo alemán apasionado por grecia antigua, especÃficamente por ese delicado momento de la historia que algunos han llamado el surgimiento de los mitos clásicos y su anclaje común en las distintas civilizaciones.

Este libro trata precisamente de lo que indica el subtÃtulo. EspecÃficamente es una serie de textos breves unidos bajo una premisa común que es la observación de que el mito necesita del rito, y viceversa. Es interesante ver como en el estudio de los mitos, los mitologos e historiadores suelen olvidar la importancia de los ritos religiosos, que acompañan a los mitos y recojen en muchos casos los elementos necesarios para comprender su origen profundo.

Lo interesante de los ritos: el sacrificio, el tejido de una prenda, el lavaje de una estatua, el mantenimiento de las costumbres repetitivas (la liturgia) me ha demostrado un rostro que desconocÃa completamente alrededor de las funciones del simulacro y la culpa dentro de las religiones, de hecho esta es posiblemente una de mis lecturas del año casi sin querer: Estaba buscando algo para leer un poco más amable a mi humor pasado por agua la semana pasada y "encontre" a este señor que desconocÃa, y que me impresionó terriblemente. Recomiendo mucho esta lectura.
