Deep Space - Hidden Terror

Rate this book
This hard Sci-Fi novel is the sixth book in the “Stasis Stories, a series of optimistic tales of technological innovation in the near future. They follow Kaem Seba, a young man with extraordinary math talents. With his friends, he’s come up with a device that allows time to be stopped within limited volumes of space-time.
In this 6th story, the company Kaem, Arya Vaii, and Gunnar Schmidt founded to commercially develop his time-stopping discovery is working with NASA to move into deep space.
Using the space tower from book 5 they launch large payloads into orbit to start building a rotating wheel space station and launch a successor to the James Webb Space Telescope. Then they put a space-launch tower on the moon that’s aimed at sending craft all over the solar system.
Unbeknownst to them, the Haliq, a race of aliens in the Epsilon Eridani system is launching its own ships to the Sol system with the intent of finding more space for their burgeoning population. When they arrive, they’re alarmed to find intelligent beings in the system they’ve come to populate, but their obvious solution is to exterminate the problematic humans.
The aliens have an advanced technology that lets them jump across interstellar and interplanetary space.
But they don’t have stasis

I was born on the island of Cyprus where my dad was employed as a mining engineer. We moved to the Philippines (more mining) when I was three and then to Arizona when I was 9. I went to med school at the University of Arizona and did a residency in Orthopaedics at the University of Kansas. I taught Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill until I retired in 2017.

I've always loved science fiction and it's been great fun getting to write some. I also like music and have a little home recording studio. You can read more, listen to some music and look at some of my art, at if you like.

Time flies when your .......

Talk about picking up the pace. I won’t spoil anything in this book but as the summary suggests aliens are involved and yes there is a fight. Lots more stuff happens in the book so much stuff that we finally get to see the author take opportunities to skip ahead in time. This was a refreshing approach to this book because I always wondered how are we going to see technology progress if when we read any entire book it appears maybe a year has passed. That’s not a problem in this book trust me. Now it is worth noting we don’t really experience the protagonist perspective in this book we really see the war from two sites the alien perspective and human human perspective not from the traditional main character. This may seem jarring to some who like the main character but I understand he can’t be everyplace everywhere and it simply makes sense. With that being said while these two new perspectives were not bad they simply weren’t as good as the main characters perspective. I think it’s just because of the events that was going on in that the characters themselves. The fighting wasn’t boring but it wasn’t exciting either. We’ve all become excited by the advances in technology hearing how things are progressing. When we have the encounters with the aliens you don’t get all the progress that feeds the story so it’s a different perspective you may like it you may feel more like myself and just be OK with it.

With all that being said I have to give the book 5 stars it’s different from the other ones but not much the author definitely set things up for the future while we also progress into the future with this book. My one criticism might be time itself. Once we start making progress forward we aren’t given exact numbers to determine how many years have progressed. Don’t get me wrong we can figure some things out in a roundabout fashion by examining a particular characters age but I think we need a system where we are given the year a certain event occurs. Especially if it appears we are going to be going at a much faster pace now.

Like I said the book is great dive into it enjoy it said to tell you you’re going to want the next book in the series when you finish.

A great addition to Laury Dahners Stasis-series - and the first one, which covers nearly 20 years of time. But that's necessary - Staze needs time to put its imprint on the way of living here on Earth ...
Necessarily, because its not longer than the other stories, it makes occasionally the impression of a reportage - but as soon as ET turns up ... well, I couldn't put it down. So, 5 stars.
PS.: I wonder, if we will see another story around the Aliens in this book ...

Dahners, Laurence E. Deep Space-Hidden Terror. Stasis Stories No. 6. Kindle, 2021.
This sixth number in the Stasis Stories series begins what I hope will be a new story arc for future volumes. Our usual hero Kaem is now married with teenage children but has somehow maintained his low-profile life, in spite of creating more world-changing technology than Gates and Jobs ever imagined. His daughter, who shares many of his qualities, has no idea how important a man her father is, and part of the story centers on her coming of age. The central action takes us to the orbit of Saturn where human ships encounter an alien task force with bad intentions. We see action from both alien and human perspectives. It is fun to follow their competing strategies and guesses about the other side’s technology. An enjoyable read. 4 stars.

5 You May Be Freakishly Immune To The Horrible Effects Of Weightlessnes But That Will Not Protect You From My Revenge! Stars

Deep Space is the sixth book in The Stasis Stories series by Laurence Dahners.

Progressing this story to such a degree is honestly appreciated. While I have come to enjoy experiencing their hardships, and triumphs, continuing at the same pace would have been frustrating. That we meet Arya and Kaem's children in this book is the cherry on top of everything else. Allowing for other characters to carry the narration this installment helped in shifting the timeline and story forward from Kaem and the beginning of Staze.

April Lee is a badass. Her and Norm's pairing is adorable, and kismet. However, she drove this iteration. Her fierceness was exemplified, and utilized to crush the invaders from Epsilon Eridani. Kaem did influence the outcome with his quick and inventive thinking. Yet, she was still brave and commanding enough to guide the rest of Maui's crew through such a trying and terrifying endeavor.

I like that this series has finally stepped a little bit closer to what is considered the norm within Sci-Fi. Space battles, alien confrontation, and Space Marines to name a few. The creative ingenuity of Stade honestly turns that degree of norm on its head. While I imagine there are other Sci-Fi that showcase some indestructible 'material', I don't believe anything touches on the utility of Stade. I hope there's more advancement in any other books of this series with AI or Space weapons or jump drives. Those are always my favorite aspects of Sci-Fi.

As always, a great read.

I have, not once, read a book by Laurence Dahners that I have failed to love. Each book he writes has a way of capturing the readers imagination and taking them on a fantastic journey. I absolutely love the way he takes a near future Earth, tweaks one tiny thing, and sees where the journey takes you.
I love watching a 'Science' TV show that I can sink my teeth into and tear apart because they take too many liberties. They throw out terminology that makes no sense, the scientific 'facts' change partway through, but they are still enjoyable. Dahners doesn't do that. He may not get everything right, but he does his research and paints a picture that is just believable enough that you enjoy the ride.
If you're a fan of science fiction, in any way, shape, or form, I highly recommend picking up one of his books, and enjoying the adventure that follows.

It's a story for entertainment!

Since it's science fiction, there will be some handwaveium. It's ok. The characters are reasonable, the plot is decent and I like the action. One point, though. If your population is so big you have to ship it off to another planet, depending upon your birth rate, it won't work. The cost of the ships, the fuel and the brain drain is too much. Figure that somehow we could immediately send the entire population of India to another planet. How would that help those in South America, Europe, Canada? Or we could do the same thing with time zones, send every other one to a different planet. If we don't change the underlying culture that's left, we are just putting off the problem. Much like our group of politicians, running up a huge debt for our kids to pay. I predict that the debt is so big that it will be defaulted on.

I somehow missed that Deep Space - Hidden Terror and The Mistress of Space-Time, the 6th and 7th books in Laurence E Dahners The Stasis Stories series had come out. A bit bummed that I could’ve gotten to these gems sooner but the silver lining is that even though there’s not a real cliffhanger, these books really are a set and ideal to read (or in my case binge) one after another. Kaem Seba and his equally brilliant and talented daughter Zaii (who is mostly a high schooler and young adult now) are the true stars of these sets, with a many story line focusing on handling an alien invasion (though the side stories are totally fun too). Great speculative science (the wonders of controlling a degree of time and space), great action and character development. Totally wonderful fun. These books were really fantastic, and easy to highly recommend.

Borrowed this edition on June 29, 2024. Kindle Unlimited Books. Read Kindle book using Alexa audio asset. An alien hostile first contact but the aliens are not very capable and have a limiting social structure. Battle sequences were ok though not optimum. With the second atomic explosion, the humans should have anticipated the high g spin forces, also they should have checked after the first nuclear bomb the attacked ship for survivors that may have been in stasis. April Lee was the heroine but the rest of the crew was overly minimized especially the ship's captain.
The kids wanting to join the space force and hostility to parents did not ring true (no background given to explain hostility). How did April Lee get back to Earth so fast (with low fuel and a travel time of about 77 days)??

Why those weird words?

Several times I just had to open the dictionary for 3 words I was guessing at. These unusual words I should written down so I could use those 10 dollar words here. One ment attack the other 2 I completely forgot because they weren't used as often. But none of them were very effective at describing what was going on or what happened. Good thing I downloaded the dictionary. I don't think anyone actually uses them in every day speech. But go ahead and use them, I'll gladly look them. I'll keep reading your books and usually give them 6 stars. It was late at night and now it's early morning but I will read the book and note those 3 words and edit my review just for people that think I'm uneducated.

Not as attention keeping as prior books

The time progression of seeing peeks at lives/ activities as characters lives progress was okay but for me parts just seemed dry and whole story did not flow and did not really have a point .
except to get to the point in time the aliens appear and then deal with them.
The appeal of Stasis stories for me was the possibilities and the effects/ changes could bring and this felt more like reading headlines with small blurb but no real meat .
I would have enjoyed it more if had been collection of how characters lives grew and changed with no aliens .

One of the most awesome books I’ve ever read!

I just finished reading this book and it blew my mind! This might just be the best “David versus Goliath book that I’ve ever read. Why? How about awesome plot, incredible characters and more mind blowing hard science fiction than you can shake a stick at?! Oh, and don’t forget horrific literal BEMS, bug eyed monsters! Not to mention the literal fate of the world hanging by a thread!! Read this book NOW!!! You WILL be very glad you did. Mr. Dahners, please keep up the great work!!!! :)

Good, well written Sci fi story

I have read this entire series along and every one is intellectually stimulating. The story is intriguing and multiple aspects of it make for a great adventure. As was the case with all of Lawrence's books, I can not put it down. I literally read this in one sitting and my day is gone, projects I should have been working on will be crammed together with tomorrow's chores. I have been reading Science fiction for a long time, I find these books very, very entertaining and well thought out. Excellent work as always Mr Dahners!

Exciting

This book is an exciting story of aliens invading our solar system and what we do to stop them with the wonderful,Staze
Indestructible, lightweight, and slick so nothing sticks to it. I just wish it really existed because it would sure be a lifesaver and property saver against hurricanes and other types of severe weather and fires since it doesn’t burn radiation doesn’t affect it. If wishes were horse beggars would ride.

Interesting Story

This story of alien invaders set 17 years after the last book was interesting but I have questions. Why won’t anyone give him a doctorate, even a honorary one after the Nobel prize. What would the aliens drones we currently have watching us do to invaders? Are we not a terraformed planet already? How many non human intelligent species are there on earth already?

Nits to pick

First, I always enjoy the hard ‘science in these books. This has a bunch of it, between orbital mechanics and nuclear physics. Even meteorology.

The prose is, as usual, clean and clear. Also, quite family friendly.

The problems I had:

Interfering with weather is risky. Natural processes work on a global scale, but impact locally. Hurricanes destroy houses, yes, but they also bring significant rainfall and act to knock down trees that may be then contribute to ongoing processes. I wish there had been discussion on those ecological issues as well.

Aliens capable of manipulating their own genetic structure would have been more than capable of limiting reproduction. While there may still be impetus to expand, there shouldn’t be desperation. Unless there are pressures that were not covered in the novel, but then they should have been.

Finally, it took far too long to reach the conflict portion, but somehow skipped steps along the way in favor of the sun shield subplot…that was irrelevant to any of the central plots. It was an interesting concept, and would have made for a neat short story. But it distracted from the main plot without substantially enriching the narrative.

All that said, huge improvement on the prior novel.

As always, I will buy this author’s work without hesitation.

The entire series thus far has been great! Definitely one of my favorites.

The one criticism I could throw out there is in the audio version of book 6, the narrator is Lee Goettl and the first 5 books were
narrated by Andre Blake.
Mr. Goettl does a good job but the change away from Mr. Blake, whatever the reason, was briefly off-putting.

Read the whole series

This one didn’t focus on tech as much as most of the others in the series but possibilities of a future with Stade in it and with someone like Keam at the head of it. It was an awesome book and I cannot wait for the next one.

Another Great Read

The ending makes me hope for a spin off!

It was interesting to see how a stade ship could be used, and how an alien might think. As always, I look forward to the next book.

As always with Dr. Dahners, a brilliantly written, thoroughly enjoyable novel. I eagerly await his next work. If you haven't read his earlier work, you really need to take the time to do so.

Well this is a surprise, first time giving this author 4 starts not five. This author is in my top five, but out of over 30 books this was my least favourite. That said still good read but if we to this author try author book and the first book I any series.

Thank you for another book in this series

I understand the large time lapses to get us to a point where this story could happen but I do miss seeing Kaem more in the story. I am still happy to have this new installment in the Stasis universe.

Another gem as typical from Mr. Dahners

I just love the way he just imagines one tiny thing being different & then wraps that around reality & what could result. Can’t wait for the next one (in any of his series!).

This book is an outstanding read. It would work best for the reader to read series in order. His books have been good enough to re-read. I believe they will stand the test of time and become classic sci-fi.

Thoughtful addition to stasis series

Fast pace addition to series, while developing a realistic life story for the main characters. The story shows that intelligent people are necessary to solve the hard problems that life throws their way.

Good use of brains and teamwork

I really liked this book in the Stasis series. It brought out the best in everyone involved, showed character growth, and the amount of time passed within the story did not bear down on it.

Fun, tight, interesting book. Stade has gone a long way from an undergraduate lab experiment, but this book takes the focus from genius-become-superhero Kaem and puts it on the team facing the biggest challenge yet. An interesting thought experiment and a good read.

Caught up

I am sure the author is planning to continue the series beyond this point. I did like the multi year jumps in this book. I do think the aliens were a little too like the villain aliens in the Vaz series

Sci-fi at its best

A great series, Sci-Fi old school. Bug eyed monsters, smart engineers, brilliant scientists.
A true homage to the many pulp stories I read in my younger days.
The only thing missing was a Franzetta style cover.
