Life's been pretty amazing. Moving back to my hometown of Coral Pointe Inlet and opening Shore Thing Management with my four best friends is the best decision I've ever made. Falling back into old habits with an ex? Not so much. When Aiden, the sexy, straight owner of SandBar comes to my rescue pretends to be my boyfriend—handing me the flashlight I need to make my way out of the darkness—lines begin to blur. Suddenly, I'm falling again, but is it stupid of me to want Aiden to land by my side?
Aiden Rafferty
I've made a name for myself in this town. Granted, sometimes it's passed around in a morsel of gossip over morning coffee. I've poured my heart and soul into SandBar, and despite some townspeople thinking I turned my back on the family business, it's become a tourist hotspot. I see and hear a lot as a bartender, but I never get involved—until Cole. There's something about him, something that makes me want to protect him. Problem is, he's been hurt before. This fake relationship was my idea, so how do I go about convincing Cole there's nothing fake about it?
Convincing Cole is book one in the series, Shore Thing, by Jaclyn Quinn. I’ve been wanting to start this series for awhile now and finally decided to jump in. I’m so glad I did!
Cole Sullivan is thirty three years old. He and his four best friends have moved to Coral Pointe, Florida and started a business together, Shore Thing Management. Cole is Hotel Manager for their Coral Pointe Inn. Cole grew up in Coral Pointe, his parents still live there, so he is loving being back in his home town. Cole has been in a toxic relationship with a man he’s been on again, off again, since high school. His self confidence couldn’t be lower but he just can’t seem to cut things off. He takes whatever little morsels of time he is able to get from him. Until the night when everything came to a head and Aiden came to his rescue.
Aiden Rafferty is thirty eight years old and also grew up in Coral Pointe. He also left for several years and came home to start his own bar, SandBar Brewing. He has seen Cole sitting alone on several occasions being stood up by his date. Cole and Aiden started a tentative friendship. Aiden is straight but he’s been noticing little things about Cole that he shouldn’t. Things a straight man wouldn’t notice. It’s on a night when Cole needs rescuing that Aiden steps in and pretends to be his boyfriend.
“With Aiden, I was starting to feel stronger, not weaker.
As Aiden and Cole spend time together, it doesn’t take long for the attraction to become too much to ignore. Aiden might feel confused about his feelings but he’s not the least bit reluctant to jump in and give things a try. One kiss is all it takes for them to both realize that their fake relationship is not fake at all.
Aiden makes Cole feel more brave. He shows him how a boyfriend should be treated. But Cole still needs to work to find his own voice. And Aiden has some family issues of h is own to deal with. But, together, they give each other strength.
I loved these two together and the effect they had on each other. It might have taken Aiden by surprise that he was attracted to a man for the first time but I loved how all in he was. He never hesitated for a second. And I especially loved how these two stuck together. There is no push away at all. The next book is Landing Levi and will be Sage and Levi’s book. I can’t wait to get started.
“With him, I never wondered if I was enough.

I loved the start of this book. I loved the settings, the introductions to the main characters and all the secondary characters. I can't wait to read some of their books in the future. However, after the 30% mark this turned a little too dramatic for me. Everything felt a little too much like a soap opera.
Oof I did not expect to like this as much as I did. Some of the senior citizens- actually make them all- annoyed me at some point or the other but I loved the other characters for the most part. The epilogue was hilarious🤣.
Jaclyn Quinn writes lovely romances that just make you feel good and this is no exception.
Fake relationships are one of my favourite tropes and when coupled with a bisexual awakening you get a truly compelling story of two men falling in love.
I loved both Cole and Aiden and their friendship group and it marries well with the beach town vibe of the setting too.
This book was so cute! Simple, low angst, mindless read- but full of sweet moments and heartfelt spice! Found family, bi-awakening, fake dating, hurt/comfort, friends to lovers.
Let's see if I can concisely round up what I didn't like about this book. Overall, it gets 2 stars because I did finish it, even if it took some serious skimming.
1. Instalust
This has significant instalust GFY in the beginning, coming from Aiden. It's just ridiculous. It of course turns into instalove, even though there was never any real relationship connection developed. Their relationship stayed shallow the entire time.
2. High school but with 40 year olds
The drama and interactions of these characters (all of them, lord there's so many being set up for future books) makes it feel like a bunch of 18 year olds, not men in their late 30's. It was second-hand embarrassing to witness their immature behavior.
3. The subsequent book character problem
It can be hard to balance introducing relevant characters in the beginning of a series - here, the five friends, plus the relevant townies - without overwhelming the original pair. They overwhelm the story in this one. It's clear that Levi and Sage are the next book, and their story was an annoyingly large part of this book. It didn't add anything to start them off so early. There was a bit where there was some interesting tension built in early on (Levi and Ford?? intrigue! How will Levi figure out that Sage is into him?) and then that was just totally ruined at the end. I no longer care.
4. Meddling family/supremely gossipy town
The town this is set in is the apex of gossipy small town bullshit. It's not an amusing level of meddling, or even good natured. They're all nasty and cruel, and it was very unpleasant to read. The town constantly criticizes Aidan for branching off the family business, without any nuance to their story. His father blocked him out and doesn't talk to him, but the town has decided it's Aidan's fault and punishes him. It's gross. There's a dramatic town-shaming via speeches at the end, and it is just so ham-handed and cheesy.
The meddling family was done clunky here as well. Cole's mother barging in and making him do a kissing booth at a fair?! Honestly. Boy, you are like 38, just say no. Though Cole's Personality Trait is doormat, so I shouldn't have expected much.
5. Conversational monologues
I think I've noted this in previous Quinn books, but the conversations never read as real conversations. People don't speak in paragraphs. It makes the interactions between characters come off as infodumping. It doesn't help when both characters sound the same.
6. Too many details
There are points where the narrative tension is broken by including too many pointless details. At one point, Aidan's father has suffered a heart attack and instead of focusing on that, we get an aside about who is tending the bar at his place, and the work schedule. It pulls you out of the moment.
7. Drake showing up again at the end
Drake, the villain (complete with dumb moniker by our immature protags) shows up at random at the end. He's just not relevant by that point. I felt he was poorly handled, a two-dimensional uninteresting bad guy for Cole to defeat (though I think he essentially failed at that anyway).
This is a great start to a fun and breezy beach lovers series. The fake boyfriend trope was well written and engaging with super-awesome characters, Cole and Aiden. They are decent men being treated indecently, by both family and neighbors. I loved how each man had to assert their own strength, and support one another’s emotional health and wellness. Their romance is incendiary. Aiden is a compassionate partner taking on a lot of new roles in the bedroom to keep Cole from reflecting on the damage Drake caused. He’s not sad about it; sex with Cole is amazing in ways he’d not predicted.
5 Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken. When Cole's ex, Drake, starts humiliating him in the bar Aiden can't just stand by and allow his friend to be hurt. He quickly thinks; why not pretend they have started seeing each other, no problems could come with that, right? Oh yeah...famous last words.
Between the gossip about Aiden having turned his back on his family...his new budding relationship with Cole... and Cole's nosey interfering mother, it was a wonder these two even slightly managed to remain sane. Somehow, along the way, they discovered that they really never had to go to the extreme of faking their attractions or their feelings of contentment when they were with each other...those feelings had genuinely been there all along.
The way Aiden helped Cole realize that he was worth so much more than he had, for his entire life, been led to believe, and them learning to trust and lean on each other made the story sweet and amazing. With the help of their friends, they will surely come out on the other side and still together. They will just need to stick solidly together and pay no attention to the gossip or the hateful words being spewed by some people... and above all, ignore the hateful, vengeful ex that is "hell-bent" on destroying their newfound and still rather fragile relationship.
This story is so worth the reading time just for the humor that takes place between the friends.
Friends, family, favorites, partners, gossips, and beaches.
When students finally graduate from the chaos of high school and leave for college, many never return to their territories ever again. But some do return and even bring friends to share the opportunities and adventures of home towns and those who remain.
Rumors about everything from past dating and current sexual orientation and marital status and wealth and history and anything else that can be used to embarrass or destroy someone just for fun becomes the reality of those who return.
Yet good friends can survive with the support of family and friends.
Aidan stepped in when Cole needed him. He kept doing that throughout the book. Their romance was sweet and sexy.
Cole was unlucky in love until he found it in a unlikely person. A not so straight Aiden. Love a good bi-awakening book.
Aiden and Cole had great chemistry and I loved them together. Both, now had someone to lean on. Drake, the bully, getting his comeuppance was perfect as well.
I’m really looking forward to more books in this series!
had a rough star cause i didnt like drake and how gullible cole is.. but i guess he needed that in order to grow and i love that this was smooth and the vibes are very cute!!
Oh I absolutely adored this book! It was all of my favorite things wrapped up into 200 pages of glorious! A fake relationship done well and with a twist, a sexual awakening, a group of long-time friends that are there for each other, a small town setting with strong family bonds, and a romantic and SAF couple that find a wonderful HEA! This was my first book by Jaclyn Quinn but I will immediately be grabbing more.
Cole and Aiden were just so great together. Aiden was just what Cole needed to get past some deep-seeded insecurities he had from a previous guy. He was kind, caring and so respectful of Cole and took the time to woo him, which made my heart melt. They really brought out the best in each other. Watching their relationship develop from friends to fake dating to true love was fantastic. And it all happened surrounded by friends and family that were amazing. I cannot wait for the next book in the series so I can visit with this fabulous cast of characters Jaclyn Quinn has created!
It was a little bit OTT but I was totally here for it. This has so many things that I like; Insecure MC who regains his confidence. Little bits of possessiveness. FLUFFFFFFFF Ex being jealous (ha!) Humor Great cast of characters (I’m reading all their books!) No stress No cheating/ no sharing / no love triangle
I loved the kissing booth scene. 🥰
My only complaint is that I wish the epilogue was further out than the 2 month time jump but I understand since it’s a series and these characters are going to be present in the other books.
I loved Cole and Aiden’s story! There were so many things that worked for me: first times, sexual awakening, strong friend group, laughs, sexy times, and overall sweetness that kept a smile on my face through most of the book. I loved seeing Cole grow and gain his confidence back after kicking his ex to the curb. Aiden was so sweet in the way he helped Cole gain that confidence. I also loved how he approached his new found feelings for a man. I adored the group of friends Cole and Aiden surrounded themselves with. I’m eager to see how this series unfolds because there are so many stories I need to know!
There were many times I wanted to shake some people and thunk them hard, not Cole and Aiden. There were many more times I wanted to hug people, cheer loudly and swoon. I’m talking about in addition to Cole’s and Aiden’s fabulous friends, you guessed it, Aiden and Cole themselves. I think those two need a freaking parade. They’ve earned it just for their patience, poise and fantastic way of dealing with conflict but also because they’re amazing as people and gloriously romantic. “If I’m with someone, I want all of them, not just the stuff that brings me pleasure. Not just the stuff that brings us both pleasure. I want everything. Dates and laughs. Someone I can count on. See, they’re just so squishy swoony, I spent most of the book either blushing from the heat or smiling from the love. Just one taste of them will never be enough but they are most assuredly a pair that will forever light your way.
Not terrible, but generally didn’t work for me. The characters were supposed to be 33 and 38, but both of them acted like high schoolers or college kids. Their actions and the plot as a whole were really immature.
It was the epitome of small town nosy judgy gossipy in a way I just never bought.
First books in series are also hard. We’re meeting so many characters and laying seeds for so many sequels, and it just all ran together.
Contains: small town, ocean, Florida, hotel owner, bar owner, sexual awakening / kinda GFY, shitty ex, shitty dad, gossipy neighbors, vers, dad health scare (heart attack), kissing booth, fake dating
3.5/5🔥

Leżaczek, nad nim ogromny parasol chroniący przed słońcem, pod nim złocisty, sypki piasek, przed nim niebieskie do bólu morze z wiejącą od niego lekką bryzą. W jednej ręce drink/piwo/wino, w drugiej książka...
...yep.
Wakacyjna, fajna lektura 😁
I was already enamoured because the name Aiden, but he was as beautiful as his name. Stepping up to Cole's defense without hesitation, not thinking about the consequences for himself. I kinda fell in love with him. Poor Cole is so lucky to have found Aiden after being treated like shit by his ex. I could have killed that bastard myself, he really made my blood boil. Loved the dynamic of Cole's friend group, so I might pick up other books in this series.
MM Romance Fake Relationship/Friends to lovers/Bi-Awakening 4 Easy Breezy Stars
I loved this book and that was a huge surprise since I only picked it up because I wanted to read book 2 in this series and even though it says these are standalones, the author says it’s better to read this first. I’m so happy I listened. Let’s be real clear though…this book is cheesy and predictable AF. Easy Fucking Breezy. I should really be rating this 3 stars but sometimes I just need one of these low angst filler books every now and then.
Cole and Aiden own businesses close to each other and are acquaintances. Cole is stuck in a one sided relationship with a guy that treats him like crap yet he keeps letting it happen much to Aiden’s dismay. Aiden thinks Cole deserves better and he’s starting to feel things for Cole he’s never felt for another guy. Aiden comes to Cole’s rescue pretending to be his boyfriend and this is the story of how they become a real couple.
I loved that once these guys were together, they didn’t have stupid separations or misunderstandings. I loved how Aiden showed Cole the way he deserved to be treated and Cole was the rock Aiden didn’t know he needed. I loved the friend groups and the banter between them. I’m super excited now to read book two because Sage and Levi are going to be adorable together. I didn’t care for all the small town gossip and meddling especially with Cole’s mother but I can overlook it because I really enjoyed reading this.
I bought the entire series and am going to listen to them. On listening to this, I think it deserves another .5. Yes, the ending is still a bit cheesy but the narration was great, the story pulled me in and I'm already on book 2 (also in audio)
Fun
I really, really want more of these guys. I loved Cole and Aiden but am so curious about the others. A confrontation towards the end spoiled it a little for me, hence the 4 stars. It was a tad on the cheesy side. Hopefully Levi is next
This is the first book in what looks to be another great series by Jackie Quinn. Cole is still hung up on the first guy he ever loved - first guy he ever did anything with. He also is still trying to figure out why that guy, Drake, ended things when they both went off to college. Which is why he is still meeting up with him for hook ups, hoping he will eventually get all the answers, and also maybe get Drake to once again love him. What he gets is a feeling of being used, and not being good enough.
Aiden comes to Cole's rescue one night, when Drake is throwing digs Cole's way, and pretends that they are in a relationship. Even though Aiden is straight. He like Cole as a friend, and wants to help his friend out, even though he maybe is starting to feel things for Cole that go beyond the straight friend zone. Thanks to some family drama, Aiden is used to be the center of the town's gossip mill, so he is more than willing to suggest they keep the charade of the relationship going for a few weeks, then casually break up. Spending time with Cole brings up all kinds of feelings for Aiden, and he's beginning to realize he may not be as straight as he thought. At least, not when it comes to Cole. Now, he just has to convince Cole.
This book hooked me from the very first chapter, and kept me hooked. I love stories where there is a group of friends, who are more like family, and this book more than delivers on that. I can't wait to read the rest of the guys story. This book delivers on laugh out loud moments - "You've been Saged!" - to sweet, but honest family moments, to scorching hot moments, while Aiden and Cole discover each other. They are so good together, I needed a cold shower after reading! I don't often re-read books, but this one is one I will be visiting again.
