Marley Kincaid had followed in her father and grandfather’s footsteps, becoming a criminal defence lawyer in Melbourne, Australia. She was good at her job; her two bosses, Brian and Paul, were looking at making her a partner the following year. Marley was a beautiful young woman with a successful job. But since a tragic case two years prior had rocked her world, she’d sought solace in alcohol, partying long into the night and early morning hours before getting some sleep and doing it all over again. Until the worst happened, and Marley knew she needed things to change. Her sister Anna offered her a solution and it was one that Marley didn’t embrace, but she knew she had to do it anyway.

Marley’s arrival on the small island of White Cedar off the coast of Nova Scotia, where she was surrounded by the ocean, beautiful one day, wild the next, saw her in a cabin owned by an elderly woman named Noella. As Marley started going through the tortures of detox, sure she wouldn’t be able to do it, Noella’s quiet acceptance, comfort and support helped Marley through it all. And after the first week, Marley would join Noella to work in her garden, help in the kitchen. Although the temptations were still there, Marley gradually found peace. And Marley found friends on the island as well. But would it all be enough? And what would happen when she had to return to Melbourne and commence her old life once again?

The Forever Place by Aussie author Michelle Montebello was poignant, heartbreaking and emotional an outstanding, heartfelt read which I thoroughly enjoyed. Marley is a tortured character, written beautifully by the author; I loved Noelle such a caring, kind and gentle woman. I have loved all this author’s work and this one was no exception. Highly recommended.

With thanks to the author for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

The Forever Place by Michelle Montebello. (2021).

Criminal defence lawyer Marley appears perfect - beautiful, intelligent, successful. Nobody would guess she's falling apart on the inside and relies on alcohol after a horrible tragedy two years ago. After she hits rock bottom, her sister intervenes and sends her to the remote island of White Cedar off the coast of Nova Scotia to attempt sobriety and recover. But life on the island is challenging. New friendships and unexpected love see her through dark days but can Marley weather the storms to carve a new life or will the regrets of her past pull her under?

This author is one of my absolute favourites for a reason - every time I've read one of her books, it's been utterly enthralling and amazing. This one is no exception! Marley is a beautiful, intelligent and flawed woman who has been spiralling after a tragedy which occurred a couple of years ago that she played a part in and can't cope with the guilt. The storyline covers some serious and potentially triggering topics including substance abuse issues, self harm and domestic violence. The descriptions of the fictional island of White Cedar were fantastic - I could picture the surroundings and I wanted to be there! I thought Marley's journey and attempts at sobriety were realistic and quite emotional to read. An outstanding story for sure.
Overall: 100% one of my top reads of 2022, I would not hesitate to recommend this novel.

I truly love Michelle Montebello’s stories, she digs deep emotionally, brings out feelings that run through the story line and brings us heart-felt, beautiful and moving stories and this one is a fabulous read, she takes in issues that cause many people heartache ,and shows the strength and courage that comes along with hope and love. I do hope that you come along and get to know Marley as she finds her forever place.

Marley Kinkaid is a top criminal lawyer, following in her father’s footsteps she defends some very tough hard people and does it well, but when she does so well and gets someone off her life changes, her working hours are long and hard and the people she works with crave a break from all of that and find it in alcohol and recreational drugs and Marley is no different.

Her life is a roller coaster of work and drinking but when she hits rock bottom and someone is hurt her sister Anna decides that Marley needs to get away and dry out and find her way in life again and sends her to an island, White Cedar of the coast of Nova Scotia In the North Atlantic Ocean, this island is known as a blue zone were people live longer and happier lives, living a vegan lifestyle. Getting sober is not going to be easy will the quiet of the island and the people who live there be what Marley needs?

Marley is there for two weeks and the first few days are hard but her landlady Noelle encourages her and then she meets Lachlan and it is not long before two weeks is not enough Marley wants more time here, feeling better every day and getting closer to Lachlan is helping. Counting her sober days is good, being open with Lachlan not so easy but she is losing her heart to him but will she have the strength to give up her life in Melbourne to take on this quiet one on White Cedar Island? So many questions for Marley.

Forgiveness must come from Marley herself first and with the support and help of Noelle on this beautiful island Marley grows well and more confident every day, add Lachlan and the love that is growing stronger everyday gives her more strength, but will their relationship work? But being an alcoholic, it doesn’t take much to fall, getting back up is a must and a lot of courage and strength is needed for this.

This is another awesome book from Michelle Montebello, she has such a magical way with words as she brings her flawed characters to life and gets them over hurdles, helps them find love and happiness and a joy that is everlasting and giving so much joy to the reader as well, I loved the characters in this one they add so much to Marley’s journey. I do highly recommend this book it is a must read, heart-warming and beautiful, I loved it.

My thanks to the author for my copy to read and review

Sydney based author Michelle Montebello brings her readers an emotional story of hard truths, recovery and optimism. A story that delves into the world of tragedy, personal vices and desperation, The Forever Place is a tender tale that will touch a wide audience range.

The Forever Place is Marley Kincaid’s story. This criminal defence lawyer appears to have the world at her feet but deep down she is at breaking point. When a tragedy hits Marley she is unable to cope and she seeks comfort in alcohol, which gradually get out of control. With her dependence on the bottle increasing and infiltrating into every aspect of her life, Marley eventually reaches a crisis point. In response, Marley’s sister tries to get her the help she so desperately needs. Marley is sent to recover at White Cedar, a remote island located off Nova Scotia. But Marley is in for a huge shock when she begins her recovery process on the island. Every day brings a new challenge for this lawyer as she wrestles with her inner demons, past hurts and misgivings about her life. What does the future hold for Marley?

Michelle Montebello is an award-winning author and bestselling writer on an international scale. I have had the pleasure of reading a number of books by this Australian Romance Readers Association Award winner. After I read a number of amazing reviews of The Forever Place and I was delighted to receive a copy of Michelle Montebello’s 2021 release.

What I valued the most about The Forever Place was the fact that Michelle Montebello was upfront and truthful from the very beginning with her first presentation of The Forever Place. A word of advice appears as a precursor to the story, which stipulates that this book contains themes of alcoholism, domestic abuse and self-harm. These are all emotionally fraught and difficult topics, but they are also very common issues that touch many lives. I think Montebello has ensured that her treatment of these difficult areas is empathetic, honest and credible at all times. I know my heart went out the main character and I didn’t encounter any problems with the storyline direction. I do issue a trigger warning for those who may find these themes too personal. Montebello has obviously gone to great lengths to ensure that her feature narrative is carefully grounded in truth and real-life experiences. It was a very raw and moving story.

Marley is a character who we learn a great deal about and we observe her transformation as Montebello’s well-crafted narrative unfurls. With plenty of high, lows and struggles, it is easy to become invested in Marley’s plight. I was keen to see how Marley’s life would eventually pan out. I was also very interested in Marley’s career as a criminal defence lawyer, it definitely made me acknowledge the fact that addiction doesn’t choose particular people, it can impact anyone at any given time. Marley’s downward spiral and recovery process was handled with poise, thanks to Montebello’s sincere approach. As I have come to expect with Michelle Montebello’s books there is light and hope in the form of romance for the main character. It was great to see this aspect of the tale play out and I am confident that The Forever Place will win over all contemporary romance fans.

Thank you Michelle for sending us a copy to read and review.
Michelle has done it again and given readers a tender, honest, stunning and heart wrenching tale of one woman coming to terms with her inner demons.
Marley Kincaid is a successful criminal lawyer, is beautiful and has the perfect life but she also is an alcoholic.
Two years ago a tragic incident happens that puts Marley best friends with the bottle.
When Marley makes one bad choice too many, her sister Anna intervenes and off she is sent to the secluded White Cedar island in the far Atlantic Ocean to recover.
But Marley finds it difficult to attempt sobriety.
Slowly she begins to heal with new friends and a chance at love but her fight with alcoholism is just the beginning.
This story is raw, real and the truth behind abuse in its many forms is hard to read at times but there is help and a light at the end of the tunnel.
Michelle sheds light and fascination on “Blue Zones, where people live longer than the rest of the world, this is something I knew nothing about.
The writing is engaging and entertaining as always, the characters come to life in front of you and you can’t help put feel for them and the plot is totally creative and authentic.
Michelle doesn’t shy away from the harsh reality of alcohol abuse and addiction and what it can do to you and the consequences of your actions.
There’s no doubt, Michelle is writing royalty with the quality of work she has produced over the years and The Forever Place is another to include in that list.
A moving must read that will have you thinking long after you have finished.

An exquisite read by an author who regularly makes it to the top of my TBR pile! The Forever Place is the heartfelt and tearful tale of criminal defence lawyer Marley who struggles with alcoholism. She must attempt sobriety after a series of tragic events occur.

It is stunningly written, with such sensitivity that you can’t help but love all the characters, even the ones who are deeply flawed. With lots of romance and tears to keep you turning the pages long into the night, The Forever Place is another fine example of this author’s ability to weave a story that will come to life on the pages, with a well developed plotline and tons of research!

Flawless and captivating, you will adore this story of love, hope and redemption. 5 stars!

This was a really great read, a compassionate look at a woman struggling with alcohol addiction and the havoc it plays with her life and those around her.

I was completely engaged in this story from start to finish, I felt so much compassion for Marley and her struggle with alcohol addiction and the choices she makes and the impact this has on her relationships and her professional life.

Sometimes it really does take hitting rock bottom to make you take a look at what is going on, and for Marley it took hitting rock bottom and an ultimatum from her sister before she is willing (albeit under duress), to make a change.

Marley is a criminal defence attorney whose life was badly affected by the repercussions of a case she worked on a couple of years before. Without being aware of it, alcohol has become more than just a fun time. I could relate to this myself and really felt for her when she became aware just how much she was relying on alcohol to function and also how much certain relationships relied on that alcohol consumption.

Michelle Montebello introduces us to 'Blue Zones' which are some of the healthiest places on earth to live, (there is a link in the back of the book if you want to know more), White Cedar Island is off the coast of Nova Scotia (this is actually a made-up blue zone based on the real blue zones, which is a shame because I could have lived there myself for half a year (the summer half) if it had been real). Cedar Island is a small community with healthy eating, mostly a vegan diet, self-sustainable for the most part and very little alcohol available.

Marley originally goes there for two weeks to dry out after her sister's ultimatum, this is extended when she makes friends with her landlady Noelle, who plays a big part in Marley's recovery, and with Lachlan, a lovely guy who befriends her, along with his gorgeous dog, and realises if she returns to her life at this point she will go back to drinking and nothing will change. I admired Marley's determination, once she admitted she had a problem, to make changes in her life.

She has some hard decisions to make during her time on the island and she also makes some bad decisions too, I wanted to pull her aside and say nooo don't do it, but she had to make her own mistakes in order to learn and move forward.

I think that Marley and Lachlan both had very real flaws, ones that made them both easy to relate to. There were a couple of not so nice characters who played quite important roles in Marley's life and the outcomes that occurred, both on the island and back in Australia.

This really was a wonderful read, an emotional one, highlighting the very real struggle of addiction that so many people deal with every day.

Thank you to Beauty and Lace Book Club and Michelle Montebello for a digital copy of this novel in return for an honest review.

To be honest, I'd never heard of a 'Blue Zone' before, a rare place where people live longer than the rest of the world, with vitality, health and happiness. It's to one of those blue zones, White Cedar Island off the Canadian coast in the North Atlantic Ocean, that criminal lawyer Marley is sent by her sister. Marley's an alcoholic, in a damaging co-dependent relationship with another criminal lawyer in the same firm. They work hard, drink hard, do recreational drugs hard, go to bed at dawn, then get up a few scant hours later to proceed with their difficult job - aided by more booze and drugs. It's a devastating cycle that can only lead to disaster in the end. When Marley has a terrible drunk driving accident, her sister Anna does the tough love thing and gives Marley ultimatums to stop drinking or else. We all need a sister like Anna. So Marley ends up on the other side of the world, in terrible withdrawal on White Cedar Island. This island sounds magical. A place of lush beauty and care, where everyone lives a good, healthy lifestyle. Day One, in not the best of conditions and desperately craving a drink, Marley meets Lachlan, a truffle farmer. It all goes on from there. Michelle Montebello gives us huge issues in this book: unhealthy co-dependent relationships, alcoholism and drug dependence, self-harm, domestic violence and the stress of high-powered jobs. It sounds dire, but set against the healing backdrop of White Cedar Island the issues are handled well. A romance between Marley and Lachlan seems tricky - how can it ever last, given her problems? But forgiveness, love, kindness, compassion and time help make a difference to both of them as Marley bravely faces her demons. Believe me when I say this is an honest and beautiful book, quietly triumphant.

What a wonderful author Michelle Montebello is and one I was lucky enough to come across, over a year ago, through reading an ARC copy of ‘The Lost Letters of Playfair Street as part of our wonderful Beauty and Lace Book Club. This new title is just as captivating and believe me once you start you will not want to stop.

Marley Kincaid is a criminal defence lawyer who is ‘falling apart on the inside as she struggles with life through alcohol. After a series of tragic and harrowing events Marley’s sister Anna convinces Marley that she needs to take time out, look after herself and treat her addiction to alcohol. There is a place called White Cedar Island off the Canadian mainland in the North Atlantic Ocean that is a ‘blue zone - one of the healthiest places on Earth. Marley reluctantly agrees to go and treats it as rehab; however, she doesn’t count on the affect living on the island has on her journey to finding herself.
The journey Marley encounters while facing her demons has its ups and downs but there is love, forgiveness, compassion and above all the need to be true to yourself which shines through.
Loved this book and can’t wait for the author’s next title.

Thank you to Beauty and Lace Book Club and Michelle Montebello for a copy of this novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and read it in one weekend! Michelle’s writing is so descriptive I felt like I had watched a movie as I read the book! Hint, Hint!

The story is about Marley, a young successful lawyer following a self destructive path. She has everything she wants but is haunted by a past case. Marley’s sister insists she goes to an isolated location to recover and mend her dangerous ways, and remove herself from destructive influences. She moves to a blue zone area, half a world away where people live a mostly vegan lifestyle and live to a ripe old age. It is here that Marley faces her fears and must overcome her challenges.

The characters in this novel feel very real and I laughed with them and wanted to shout at the pages as they made mistakes. But I loved that the characters and felt their experiences both good and bad, we’re realistic.

I can’t wait to read her other works!

This book is going to kick you hard in the feels!
Michelle Montebello has penned a beautifully vivid, often ugly, and undeniably heart breaking journey of love and redemption.

“Marley from Melbourne has been living fast and hard on alcohol and recreational drugs to endure her stressful career, and her lifestyle has caught up with her in the most devastating way.

In order to redeem herself mentally and physically, not only personally, but for her family, she isolates herself in a “Blue Zone; a place where the inhabitants are cheating time and health through their geography, diet and life choices.

Marley is hardly a redeemable character in the beginning of this beautifully crafted story; she’s damaged by her career, her choices and the company she keeps.
But thrown onto a remote island off Nova Scotia, she finds the remedy for what ails her and the balm for her soul…and it might just include a handsome truffle farmer and his adorable canine hunting companion!

This tale had me burning the midnight oil and crying quietly into the wee hours of the morning, for I was so immersed in this story I could not put it down.
It also merits saying, I may have abstained from alcohol and paid attention to my diet whilst reading this wonderful book!

This is my first read from this fabulous author, and definitely not my last!
This is a story that’s influenced my own approach to my life choices and will stay with me for a very long while.

The Forever Place Michelle Montebello is a profound and heartfelt novel. I was hooked on Michelle's clever writing style from the first page and couldn't put this book down.

Marley Kincaid a criminal defence lawyer, she is good at hiding her feelings with alcohol, it is her liquid security blanket; the substance that muffles emptiness and anger like a shield. Her life seemed perfect from the outside with a successful career, boyfriend Austin who is also a lawyer, friends and family but when a change of circumstance happens and rocks her world she spirals.
Austin is not a great support; I felt the relationship was rooted in deep co-dependency and he enabled her. They had wild nights out to unravel from the stresses of work but drinking and doing drugs, they were too cloudy to step back. Marley could not see clearly, and certainly could not see her choices in how to deal with people and how to negotiate relationships.

Luckily for Marley her sister Anna steps in and encourages her to go to a recovery centre; White Cedar, situated on an island off the coast of Nova Scotia in the North Atlantic Ocean. Here she learns about sobriety and subjects herself to change, although there is inevitable ups and downs, fears and feelings, victories and failures that she faces in her growth to being clean.
Marley made me clench my teeth at her self-indulgence and self-destructiveness, but I found myself wanting her to unravel the weirdness and find some peace. I did empathise with her character and her struggles to deal with her mental health, sense of identity and relationships with family and Austin. Sometimes to heal you have to go through pain, and the lifestyle she was leading cheated her of that opportunity.

I loved how the story developed with the mix of characters and the way the story came together at the end. But beware: there is a lot of alcohol, drug use and abuse in this book. I’ve suffered abuse and have self-harmed but did not find this book confronting as I have healed. I would recommend this for those who are questioning their drinking, have come to decide they are willing to give up, for friends and relatives of someone they are worried about, for those newly sober, and for those merely curious. There is an answer, there is another way. I highly recommend.

Thank you Beauty and Lace for the opportunity to read and review.

I was introduced to Michelle by Beauty and Lace when I was fortunate enough to review ‘The Lost Letters of Playfair Street which I absolutely adored. Michelle’s next offering ‘The Forever Place certainly delivers and is once again a five-star read for me.

Michelle’s writing is honey on the page, she has a definite style which resonates with her reader’s and keeps them coming back for more. I have loved all of Michelle’s female protagonists both Charlotte and Paige in The Lost Letters of Playfair Street and Marley and her sister Anna.

Marley following in her father’s footsteps is a criminal lawyer in Melbourne, Marley works hard, plays harder, burns the candle at both ends, is a functioning alcoholic, who abuses the bottle, and is carefree with drugs, her choice of friends and her not so clever or supportive choice of lover. Everything for Marley is full-on, until early one morning, it literally comes to a screeching halt. Anna gives Marley an ultimatum, if Anna gives Marley what she needs, Marley has to relocate to remote picturesque White Cedar Island to dry out and re-evaluate her life.

Marley’s life takes a dramatic turn for the better, after initial reluctance and each attempt to leave the island thwarted the slow pace of island life begins to grow on Marley along with its electric inhabitants.

Michelle has done it again with this book, which is brilliantly written, enticing you further and further into the story, investing in each character, wanting the very best for them, riding their highs and lows, and never wanting the story to end. Thank you, Beauty and Lace, for the opportunity to review ‘The Forever Place. I cannot recommend ‘The Forever Place highly enough and anxiously await Michelle’s next book.

This review first appeared on Beauty and Lace:
Montebello delivers again after LOVING her book, The Lost Letters of Playfair Street I was excited to receive an Advance Reader Copy of her latest book The Forever Place.
I powered through this beautiful drama/romance in a weekend. I fell in love with White Cedar and all that it brought the main character Marley a criminal defence lawyer from Melbourne with a chequered history and a dependence on alcohol. When she hits rock bottom and her life and career are on the line, Marley’s sister Anna sends her to White Cedar, a ‘blue zone on the other side of the world an island off the coast of Nova Scotia. It is here that Marley is attempting to recover from her alcoholism but the Island brings with it a whole new set of challenges, emotions, friendships and romance. Will Marley recover and return to her busy Melbourne life?
The Forever Place is a beautifully written book which highlights the pressures and impacts modern day busy lives can have on people. It also demonstrates that simplicity and freedom of these pressures can bring pure pleasure and real quality to our lives.
I loved this book and the rollercoaster of emotions it took me on I was so invested in Marley’s story. I highly recommend The Forever Place to anyone looking for their next fiction read just make sure you have no plans for the weekend as you’ll want to finish it!
Thanks to Beauty and Lace for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Marley has a great job, good relationship, nice place, but none of that really makes life easier, but drinking does, well, it did.
After an accident under the influence Marley gets a bit of a wake up call and intervention from her sister Anna. Its time to detox, become responsible but none of thats happening in her Melbourne home and life.
The other side of the world, an island that promotes longevity, healthy eating and healthy living. Vegan diet for the most part and aparently, much to Marley's dislike, minimal if any alcohol.
Detoxing sucks, and why put herself through it, she's just fine... right.
Journey and suffer alongside Marley as she lets her demons out, people in and finds more than she bargained on. How does this all work... really?
I loved the escape, the characters were well developed and storey emotive. Thanks Michelle & Beauty and Lace for the opportunity to leave my couch to a good read.

Michelle Montebello, you have done it again. So enjoyed this book, Did not think it would be possible for you to write a fourth one that would match the previous three others. This particular one left me crying in some parts, you could almost feel Marley's life falling apart and her helplessness in trying to control it. Being addicted to alcohol or drugs and trying to stay clean is a lifelong battle that will stay with you till you die. I speak from experience having had friends who have gone through bad times.
I will be so looking forward to your next novel and I highly recommend the ones written before.

I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy of this book. When it was released, I promptly bought 4 copies - one for me and three for my closest friends. Everyone needs to read this book. It is out of this world brilliant, and really made me think about my own life and what happiness means to me. The opening chapter is the best opening I have ever read - it smacked me right in the conscious. I could not put this book down. It is fabulous! Thanks to Michelle Montebello for the chance to read The Forever Place.

This is an engaging modern story that resonates with the stresses of modern life and the simple pleasures that bring a real quality to our lives. Marleys issues and stress from her life as a criminal lawyer and her reconnection to nature in the beauty of Wide Cedar Island, where she finds herself - rings so true.

The story the characters and the thought of a place as magical as White Cedar engaged me from the start. The Forever Place is a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.

Another great book by Michelle Montebello. I love Marley and Lachlan. I loved how Lachlan called her Marley from Melbourne. Michelle is a great author whose books you cannot put down. I have read them all. Now to wait for the next one. Keep up the great work Michelle. ❤️❤️❤️

Yet another 5 star story from Michelle, this book taught me things I never knew I needed to learn about. It kept me enthralled throughout the entire story. It also has me wanting my own island now. Lol
Absolutely loved it, definitely recommend it.

I appreciated that this book had trigger warnings at the beginning. It's intense, more commercial fiction than romance. All one pov which was frustrating when the hero had doubts and the reader wasn't able to see them.

Quite literary in tone and tackles the difficult topic of alcoholism.

I really enjoyed this book, the characters and the places. Michelle deals with some difficult issues in this book so well. A wonderful read.
