First of all, I was correct about the upcoming special exam should be something to be anxious about. Not only did Chabashira-sensei but also Hoshinomiya-sensei felt uneasy. A special exam would mean that there is definitely plot in the story, but I think this time around the special exam on its own wasn't really the main focus for this book, but rather the characters and their reactions to it. I would still say it's a mix of plot- and character-driven despite the volume focusing heavily on the characters this time around.
Now, let's talk why I believe that this volume is more character focused even if it it's still about a special exam. My reason of thinking that is that due to the true nature of the special exam which only be revealed to the students when it's already too late it evokes certain feelings as well as emotions, specially when one won't find an agreement fast. I didn't know that this volume would be more on the emotional side so I felt taken aback. But after all, just like I mentioned in previous reviews I enjoy stories that have drama in it, specifically if it's not just some unnecessary drama but something that is really character focused like character development and such. I can confidently say that this volume had lots of character development for not just the better but also worse. While reading I felt really indulged in this volume and I still can't believe that it was apparently 400 pages as I finished this in 6 hours and one can say I was a bit too much investigated for the plot and the characters. It felt extremely easy to read this time and it flowed also quite good if one doesn't consider the short chapters in between who show the perspective of the other classes.
The ending left me conflicted though as I'm still not sure if I'm really happy about what Horikita's decision was, but I hope that it was the right one after all and that she won't life with any regrets on what happened in the special exam.
Overall, really fun read once more (though can I really use ‘fun’, when the characters all suffered?). I can now look forward to two other events happening soon as they were already announced in this volume, but more importantly I want to see how the class acts now since the special exam ended and how they will perform in the future. Hopefully, Ayanokouji's and Horikita's decisions were right and that the class continue to improve in their performance.
Is anyone going to believe me if I say I finished this by mistake? ? Because it's true. I don't know what happened. One minute I was sorting through my new books and the next thing I know is that my clock was marking 4 am and I finished this one. I need help ?.
Anyway, what's done it's done. And it was worth it!!!
I missed this series so much! I'm glad I got to enjoy Kiyotaka after almost a year. He's one of my biggest crushes, which it's kinda disturbing if you know he's a calculative sociopath ?. But he's my baby and I will always defend him.
This book reminded me why I love this series. The mind games, the suspense, and the unexpected ending were chef kiss. I could feel the tension building up slowly but I didn't know what was going to happen. And I was genuinely shocked! I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING! WHY?? I didn't like the final decision but I guess the author got his reasons.
Now I can not wait to read the next one ?. I don't know what my life is going to look like when this series is over but I won't think about it yet.
And now...we are here. I've been saying it for a while now and I've been hinting at it for a while now and I've been angry for a while now and I need to let it out so bear with me here as I state my thoughts exactly and fully spoil this volume as I both love it and I hate it in every sense of the word. don't want to know, don't read on. . . . . . . . . . . . . . There is a second variant of the Class Vote test, this is an anonymous voting system set to test the loyalties of the class to see if they'll work together or seek out a better future for themselves. And the questions are rather light in comparison, where do you want to go on winter holiday, do you want to have one student get 1000 private points, whats better academics or sports, that sort of thing. Final question is "Expell 1 student and get 300 class points yes or no." I've hinted at this since the moment things began wtih the STUPID FUCKING GOOD FOR NOTHING IDIOT HORIKITA SUSUNZE and her seeming obsession to rehabilitate Kikyu Kushida. For nearly 3 hours the class spends its time voting on this, with the vast majority of the class voting no and one person voting yes. Now I'll admit, while I'm reading this I initially didn't think it wouldl be Kushida, I actually thought it was someone else and there'd be a big reveal at the end, as in this volume the relationship between Kiyotaka and Kei became public knowledge. Airi loves Kiyotaka and I'll admit some asshat ruined that eventually Airi gets expelled (she goes on to become a confident idol and is happy so s'all good) and I thought "well, maybe at some point Kushida is going to whisper to Kiyotaka that it's not her doing it." and the revelation of Airi being out for blood to get rid of Kei happens, would've liked that more than what happened because it would've been a nice twist to see a darker side to such a good girl. But no We didn't get that. The reveal built up massively until we finally got to who it was and why and all of it came out, Kushida's real darkness and her attempt at destroying the class, and Kiyotaka used this as evidence to get Kushida expelled. He'd planned it all out since the exam had been announced, worked it perfectly. SOME STUPID FUCKER FUCKED THAT ALL UP. Yes, Susuzne Horikita refused to expel a girl who would have deadlocked the class indefintely if Kiyotaka hadn't have revealed this and got the truth to be shown to the world. Yes, Susuzne Horikita refused to expel a girl who has REPEATEDLY tried to destroy their class by selling information to enemies. Yes, Susuzne Horikita refused to expel a girl who has tried to get her ace in the hole Ayanokoji Kiyotaka expelled from school by manipulating the class against him. And though no one knows it outside of a psycho bitch, Yes, Susuzne Horikita refused to expel a girl who was going to record video footage of Kiyotaka defending himself from attack by a first year and play that off as assault and harassment by him to get him expelled.
This. DAMN BLOODY IDIOT! defended and protected a girl who sees no one outside of herself as being worthwhile and forced Kiyotaka to nuke his only friends circle by using a contingency measure of the lowest productive girl in the class, Airi Sakura. The girl who has done NOTHING BUT BE A GOOD PERSON AND HELPED WHERE SHE CAN AND BE LITERALLY THE MOST ADORABLE GIRL IN THE FUCKNIG WORLD!!!! Gets expelled...rather than the girl who did all those horrible things because she just is out to pretend to care about people.
Susuzne Horikita is a DAMN idiot, I do not believe this will end well for her and this has forever severed any idea of her being anything other than a cold and bitter girl who is desperate for attention and love. Fuck Susune Horikita, she is not worth protecting or helping, she is out for number 1 only and will constantly act as an anchor for Class D.
I was enjoying this a lot but a lot of the choices the characters make in this volume weren't to my liking. This is still a fun series to read but it's getting a bit stale and rediculous slowly though.
This was stupid. Horikita did not act like herself, I'm not sure what the author was thinking. This feels like a cop-out to have a character (Kushida) that he can insert and reuse in the future to create drama within the class. Also again, very repetitive.

hooooooooooolyyyyyyyyyy shit. this is the biggest move i think we've seen ayanoukoji pull yet, and it took me completely by surprise. things are going to be rocky for this class moving forward, even as they pull ahead to class B. absolutely brutal
Damn, Ayanokoji is a monster ?. Crazy decisions, and crazy tactics to get others to those decisions. I wonder how he'll get out of this bad guy role though... Also, Horikita is wrong for that lol. She really protected that bitch after all Ayanokoji's efforts ? she really deserved to go. It's sad I had to read this scattered out over a pretty long period, but I still enjoyed it a lot.
"The sight reminded me of something I often saw in the past. The failures would always look back on their miserable situation and be filled with regret, even though it was too late for them."
Classroom of the Elite: Year 2 Vol. 5 By Syougo Kinugasa.
Man, this volume was the best one in the year two arc. And man, how cold it was! This volume is what COTE is about. Had a great time reading this. Best volume in year two so far, and I'm not eveb exaggerating it.
There was a build-up to this exam from the last volume, aka Volume 4.5, and man, it was good. So a new special exam is finally here and it is quite similar to the In-class voting of the last year. However, this time, it was unanimous, with only 5 questions. All students have to agree on the same option. If not and the time runs out, they will be penalised.
With that premise, the volume is supposed to be wonderful. This special test also had connections to Chabashira and Hoshinomiya's past. I always wanted to learn about their past, and there seemed a love-hate relationship between them, and this volume clears that. And it was surprising done wonderfully. Liked the development of Chabashira and her reaction.
The beginning of the volume was funny to read. Ayanokoji and Kei have finally decided to tell everyone about their relationship, and the reaction of classmates were certainly entertaining. The maid cafe part was also interesting, to say the least. Poor Ayanokoji has to manage it in the cultural festival.
Now, the first four questions in the unanimous vote exam were okay, but the last one is what made the whole volume so much interesting. This is peak COTE. Of the other three classes, Ryueen's class was actually most interesting of the three. Sakayanagi, whatever, predicted Ichinose’s class without a sweat.
Now the main attraction, Horikita's class. This was brilliant. The class that had the "most potential" struggled so much. It was thrilling to read. Each vote was the same and continued for a long time, the class failing to decide what to do, Horikita being useless. And finally, Ayanokoji is going full head-on. Man, Kinugasa cooked hard with this one. The way Ayanokoji suddenly changed the whole direction and how the whole class reacted upon hearing his answer was great, even his friends didn't think he was telling the truth, but with sheer coldness Ayanokoji discloses everything and frankly it was so satisfying seeing how things play out.
** “Could you look Airi in the eyes and say that?!” wailed Haruka. “Is that what you really want me to do?” I asked in return. I was about to meet Airi’s frightened gaze when Haruka stopped me. “N-no! Don’t!” she shouted. **
Was the ending satisfying? Yes. But I'm happy about it? Not particularly. Could they have done something different? Most probably. The thing is, I actually liked the Ayanokoji group. Their interactions were fun to read, and it was a wholesome part of the series, but with the ending, I hardly believe it will exist. Though I knew about the final outcome, I still felt a bit of rage for Horikita. Seriously, she didn't need to be that stubborn. Should've just expelled Kushida. Wanted to see the development of Airi, but it's not possible anymore, alas!
I almost downgraded my review to four stars, but that choice would have been largely from someone throwing out a spoiler for this volume that I unfortunately could not forget, and that ruined the "twist" for the book. That's not the book's fault—I think it would've been a great(?) twist had I not known about it in advance.
That said, it starts off as though leading into at least one of the two upcoming events for the school: the sports event and a cultural festival. Instead, after giving the students some time to think about how they will prepare for those, it throws a curveball and subjects ONLY the second years to a third, near-immediate special exam, which takes up the rest of the book despite its simplicity. The circumstances creating the "twist" are predictable, based on established relationships between certain characters, but the reasoning behind the resolution of the same are... interesting, particularly given who suggests what. Also predictable is the final question on the special exam, also given what is presented in the book.
The main thing I don't like (besides having been spoiled, which I won't even do here except in the most vague terms) is how all of the dialogue in this series is first-person, which becomes confusing because who "I" is will sometimes change per chapter. This volume is mostly from Ayanokouji's perspective, but a big section is from Chabashira's P.O.V., and three chapters are from the other classes' perspectives to show THEIR reasoning regarding the special exam.
Recommended for fans of the series, absolutely. Newcomers will definitely not understand the significance of a lot of what happens, but... this IS rather deep into a long-running series that relies on past information.
this vol gave me more stress than i've ever felt before in my 16 years of life.. but i enjoyed every second of it, even if the end was 'sad' it had to happen one way or another and honestly, i'm surprised kiyo made that decision because it shows he's willing to sacrifice one person to save everyone else and omg i wish they could see that instead of being so annoying to him all the time my mans deserves better fr like i get its sad but its like they forgot that to survive this school (and life) you have to sacrifice valuable things which i think was the biggest lesson this volume that was done in such a compelling away that i read it in one sitting.
Holly Mother of All that's Fluffy. This book is so amazing. I was on edge all the time! I couldn't stand it. My respects to the author, there is a book about a single exam and it left me reeling. This book is an absolute must-read. Gods, that ending. The author took me from one side to another. I loved the drama. I can't stand it, I'm going straight for the next book. I wonder how the dynamics of the classroom will change from now on.
5.0 - ABSOLUTE CINEMA!!!!!!! Disparado o melhor volume vai tomar no cu Ayanogoat é gênio demais E DIGO MAIS TUDO CULPA DO YAGAMI MESTRE DA MANIPULA??O.

One of the things I have been filling down about is Ayanokoji(MC) not doing much but similar to volumes 10 and 11 of year 1 he was involved a lot more showing a bit more of what he is capable when using his knowledge gained from the white room(excluding physical strength since he beat ryueen pretty easily)
The 2nd semester has started with the sports and cultural festivals are on the horizon, but first we have a surprise special exam. While this test is simple to explain, we spend 400+ pages covering a 5-hour exam. As you can imagine, it was milked for all the drama it could be, and I have somewhat mixed feelings about how it ended. That being said, it was another good addition to series.
A fresh return back to the original class. The main part of the story, the suspenseful mind game parts, takes place in a single classroom. It's fantastically written, with a few important threads from the past coming to a head.
I liked most of all that the conclusion was not foregone, nor was it expected, nor was it happy, and yet flowed naturally.
One of the best volumes of Classroom of the Elite thus far.
Has a very sad and climactic ending. Objectively, it is what is best for the class, but this volume gave us the best view of what Ayanokoji is truly like.
Legal. Divertido. Algumas coisas bem inesperadas. Preciso me desintoxicar.
After the second island story we get a straight up class battle that really moves the plot forward with Kiyo and Kei’s relationship going public, Kushida exposed, Airi expelled, and Sae overcoming her past. Next is year 2 second semester.
