This story is connected to the Cascadia Wolves series but is completely stand-alone.Layla Warden had a ten-year plan and it sure as heck didn't include a mate. She had her flashy car and her corner office and all was right with the world until Sid Rosario sat down at her table and turned her life upside down.Sparks fly as the two werewolves flirt over dinner and it's no surprise to either of them when they end up back at his hotel room, naked and sweaty. But Sid is her mate, and they don't figure it out until the bond is sealed. Layla, driven by confusion and fear, heads out of contact while a frantic Sid looks for her. What comes next helps a reluctant wolf find her way to acceptance.

The basics: Lauren is a mom, a partner, a best friend and a daughter. Living in the rainy but beautiful Pacific Northwest, she spends her late evenings writing like a fiend when she finally wrestles all of her kids to bed.

My Thoughts - 5 out of 5 Unicorns - I loved it!!!
***I choose what I read and review based on what intrigues me!!

The new cover is nice and I love that it matches Pack Enforcer.

I quickly bought this after I finished Pack Enforcer because I really like this series already. This is a novella that is considered a prequel. It is for adults only due to the steamy content.

Not as much action in this one but still a great and quick read. It is the drama involving becoming a mate when you didn’t really have it in your plans. I really liked Sid and Layla, but I wished we could have more interaction with the family…maybe next book. Layla’s determination and her confidence is awesome. I can’t wait to read more of Lauren’s work!

I highly recommend this novella to shifter fans especially if you love Lauren’s world and work!

Well, I was disappointed, I rated other books by this author 5 stars, and for me this was barely 3. The h is caught up in her career plans, so she loses her mind when she meets her mate. He wasn't at all alpha, she seemed childish, but there are reasons for her weird reaction. What was missing was
the any real plot, tit's just meeting, mating, and more mating. Won't continue with this series.

An Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this book was received free via Netgalley for an honest review.

Reluctant Mate is a re-release of a previously published book. The Cascadia Wolves series was also my introduction to Lauren Dane. I read excerpts years ago and was intrigued but never picked up the books to read. When I saw this on Netgalley I couldn't resist.

First, this is early Lauren Dane. Second, this is a short story and as such has far less characterization. Third, this is a fated mate story so it's insta-lust and insta-love.

That said, I liked this short story because Layla was awesome! I totally got where she was coming from with her freak out and I feel like it's a natural reaction even when you live in a society where this is the norm. Sid was more of a cipher but that's ok because Layla made up for it.

As usual, Dane's sisterhoods are on display. This is heavy on the sex and it's not vanilla. Vintage Dane!

3.5 Reluctant Stars

I quiet liked this novella, we start to get a feel for what the series is going to be about.

I like Layla and Sid and how there connection was unexpected but strong. I love that Layla has a friend who will set her straight.

On to the next!
Tanya Eby is good narrator but sometimes I can’t picture the voices she uses, but I was really surprised and happy with this one! :)

*You don't have to like my review but its 100% my opinion, and I am allowed to have it.*

2.5, rounded up. Short novella sort of introducing the Cascadia Wolves series. This isn’t my favorite of Dane’s work. If I didn’t already like her other series, I’m not sure I would have read more if this was my intro to her.

It wasn’t horrible, but brevity leaves the dialogue feeling a little juvenile. The number of sex scenes also makes the plot weak - because there isn’t much talking between Layla and Sid. Also, we don’t know Sid at all. He’s an artist and he’s hot. That’s it, everything else is Layla-centric.

Note to past self - Skip this and read it *after* the series. Or not at all.

Wow! That packed a powerful punch. I haven't read anything by this author before, but needed a quick read. This did it. The writing was easy, and you kind of get a sense of what the series would be like. It had a bit of a different twist to werewolves that I have never seen before. I will continue this series, but I think I will take breaks in between books, as some of the language was a bit on the vulgar side for me, that I will read them in smaller doses.

Although this story was short I would love to read more of Layla and Sid's story. I enjoyed reading this with the steamy scenes and I'm hoping the entire series offers the same type of scenes.

What happens when the sexy bad boy and the corporate queen accidently mate?

Layla Warden had certain goals in life and a ten year very well thought out plan of how her career and life would lay out. A mate was not in there, well at least not one for at least five years or so. When he appeared he would fit right in, maybe a stockbroker or a lawyer. It certainly didn’t include a sexy, tattooed, pierced bad boy artist named Sid in town for just a few weeks but he would work very well for a nice hot fling. To her horror, that absolutely combustible chemistry that had her panting for him turned out to be a mate bond. So what did our Layla do? She panicked and ran, a move completely out of character for her.

This was short and had some seriously sexy moments to it, but Layla just wasn’t my cup of tea. I didn’t dislike her, but she was too buttoned up. Her trying to deny that wild streak within her so she could climb that corporate ladder just didn’t sit right with me. I did like Sid, what little we got to know of him. He handled his little reluctant mate gently and with care, well, once he caught her.

I appreciated the fact that this book highlighted and explained the all-important tri-mate bond that keeps coming up in the Cascadia wolves series. Not that I needed too much of an explanation for the hot sex including a three way or two. This was a quick, sexy, and enlightening read, just not my favorite of the series.

3.5 Catch Her If You Can Stars.

I'm only familiar with Lauren Dane's contemporary romances but I've always loved shifter and PNR. I read the updated version of this book called "Reluctant Mate". Dane puts a twist on shifter lore by having bonded mates take an "Anchor", a third wolf who helps to balance the bond somehow. It's claimed that this is necessary to protect the mated female. This third wolf, a male, has to have a one-time-only sex session with the female of the bonded pair in order to cement his bond with the couple as their Anchor. I have to say it is a bit squicky and I don't like that.

In this story Layla is the sister of the pack Alpha. She is a career woman and she likes to plan; she has her future all mapped out. She thinks she's going to have a fun roll in the hay with Sid, but her one night stand turns out to be her mate, so after they do the deed the bond forms, and she is furious! This wasn't in her plan!

The guy is a good dude but Layla is so selfish and self-centred, and she has tunnel vision! I didn't like her! She does a vanishing act because she can't accept that she now has a mate she didn't plan for and doesn't want. She doesn't think of how Sid feels; his life will have to change, too! Sid catches up with her while they're both furry and they mate again, in wolf form. That's a first for me in a shifter novel. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Then it comes to the Anchor tri-bond thing and she agrees to be blindfolded so that it will be "more comfortable" for her to have sex with a stranger (Sid's cousin) who isn't her mate. And, well, I have nothing against ménage but in a shifter novel where you have a fated mate, it really doesn't sit well! Urgh I think I give it two stars. Really short: three chapters and an epilogue.

This novella was such a disappointment. Historically, I have enjoyed Lauren Dane and she really knows how to write erotic scenes. Unfortunately, that's the only reason this story received as high of a rating as it did. The characters were shallow and the story was underdeveloped. I felt the author wrote just enough development to get to the sex scenes, and the lack of interest shows. Not too mention the novel has multiple writing tropes that I loathe: the pushy "best friend," the one true mate plot device, and the sex being so good the female doesn't care anymore.

I was sorely disappointed. If you wanted to write raunchy sex scenes, then write them. Don't hide behind poor plot devices to excuse it. Say it with me: consenting adults are allowed to have sex!

3.5 Novella Stars

I've read this entire series years ago and loved it so I knew I had to to get the audiobooks when they came out "FINALLY"! This story is so short it's hard to get into the story the way you will with the rest of the series. This book is more of an introduction into the Cascadia world and the history of the Pack. There isn't much meat to this one but I still enjoyed it. As all of these books are, this one was HOT!

The narration was pretty good. Tanya Eby doesn't have the voice for every audiobook, she has a very distinct sound so I was worried if she would fit this series and I was happy to hear that she has a little bit of a different tone in this series and it fit well with these characters!

Wow, wow, wow! One of the short stories from Lauren Dane but fear not it was still packed full of hotness and romance. Focused on Layla and Sid and their relationship that was full on from the start, it had everything i needed and left me wanting more! It had many, what some of us call, fanning moments and don't get me started on the tri-bond moment, no spoilers i promise but jeez it was hot!! Lauren Dane is officially in my top 5 favourite authors and everybody should be reading her books!

This is book 3 in the Cascadia Wolves series. This was a very fast paced and short read book. It took less than two hours. The story is of Layla and Sid. Newly mated and she's freaking out. All she wanted was a plan for her life. And a new mate was not in that plan. She was a workaholic. She got way more than she bargained for in a one night stand. It's a good next book in the series.

I received a copy of "Reluctant Mate" from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Description From the Publisher:

Previously published under a different title. 'Reluctant', published September 2006.

"I can't touch you yet. Once I do, it's over."

As daughter of the ruling Pack family, Layla Warden is under pressure to settle down. Find a nice wolf mate from a nice wolf family and have nice wolf babies. Layla has other plans, but when you're a werewolf, biology trumps plans. And when Layla meets Sid, the sex is so intense, so hot, so consuming, it's more than just a connection. It's a mating bond.

Sid Rosario wasn't expecting to find his mate so soon—some wolves never find theirs. Now that he's found Layla, he's never letting her go. But lust and desire alone aren't enough to secure their bond. If they want this incredible happiness to last, there's one more thing they'll have to do

My Review of "Reluctant Mate":

The first of the Cascadia Wolves Saga. Short novella with a HEA and mentions some of the other persons from future books. Can be read a stand alone book, but the series is addictive. My rating is 4 out of 4 stars. Not appropriate for readers under age 18.

This is a short story that is actually mentioned in Pack Enforcer. Layla and Sid are the troublesome couple that start what will probably be a long list of reluctant pairings in the series.

Layla is a member of the alpha's family but is determined to live her life independently. She's got a very strict plan and has been making some good progress. Not to be jammed into a straightlaced persona - she likes to indulge her wild side by hitting up clubs with her friend. At one such club, she meets Sid - the bad boy artist who is supposed to be a nice diversion. This one-night-stand pretty rapidly heads into mate territory when they get a good sniff of one another.

Layla, obviously, wants nothing to do with this change in plans. She's not willing to throw her life away just because her wolf half says so. Unfortunately, without the tribond and acceptance between mates, she's going to go mad. Who doesn't want a sexy artist chasing after you, though? There is a nice HEA here and you certainly don't have to read any of the other books to enjoy this one.

Spoilers Alert: she wasn't that reluctant ;)

Layla has everything that a successful career woman wants: a dashing suit, a corner office, and a ten-year plan.... The list goes on but it doesn't include a werewolf mate, because her ten-year plan doesn't involve being tied down to a mate. She gets more than what she bargains for when she forms the mate bond with a hot guy named Sid from out of town after what was supposed to be a one night stand.
Layla freaks out and runs away.

Quick dose of heat!

I love this author! She writes many different flavors of romance yet, while unique, have common elements that make them so good. Namely, they are well written, have intriguing characters and can bring it, whatever is being served! This time out is fan-worthy sexy romance with a paranormal twist

“You’re suddenly so important to me. Three days ago I didn’t even know you and you’re everything.

Layla has a plan and nowhere does that involve mating and starting a family any time soon. Sid is happy too for a short-term, sexy hookup so let the sheets start burning up! And did they burn! No slow build up here, the sexy starts quickly and whew, is it hot! There was instant combustion and neither tried to fight it. What they did fight was the idea there was going to be more

This is a quick, novella-sized introduction to the Cascadia Wolves Pack and it started with heat and heart that paves the way for more ~Diane, 4 stars

This was...terrible. It was so rushed! The story should have had at least 25 more pages.

I didn't mind the threesome but I found it very objectionable that the woman couldn't handle the mating on her own and she needed to have a second guy to "anchor her". No issues with the guy, he can handle all the stress of the mating A-OK but the woman goes crazy unless she has another dick. Yeah, I know the author was just trying to justify the idea of including threesomes in every book but I would have been fine with this if both of them were affected in some way by the mating, not just the woman.

Not continuing the series.

Parts of plot are interesting, so thought I would give the Series a Chance.

I did not enjoy this series as much as Heather Long's Willow Bend Wolves series, or Lauren Dane's current Diablo Lake series. Sex scenes through the 5 Books were graphic with raw language, but I found them repetitive, and I ended up skipping over most of those in each book. However the plot and writing improved through the series, and kept me engaged and reading.
Overall Rating for Series: 3 Stars

Individual Book Ratings:
Reluctant Mate: 2 Stars
Pack Enforcer: 2.5 Stars
Wolves Triad: 3 Stars
Wolf Unbound: 3 Stars
Alpha's Challenge: 4 Stars
Bonded Pair: 1.5 Stars (too angsty for me)

Businesswoman Layla Warden has mapped out her career and at age 25 it's going better than expected.
Of course it doesn't leave her time for much of a social life.
Artist Sid Rosario is just passing through.
But, when they meet, sparks fly, clothes hit the ground in a flash and the almost immediate sex is intense.
Oh, and they are both Wolf Shifters who are now bonded mates for life.
WTF they must have a threesome with one of Sid's relatives so that if either of them dies the other will have an Anchor.
I have a suspicion that men have been telling women variants of this since the beginning of time.
“Reluctant is erotic twaddle. It's mercifully short.

Ummmm wow. That was hot. Don’t know if I liked it all hmm, yeah, I didn’t like the tri-bond in this situation. It was real hot, don’t get me wrong, but it felt wrong. Like, I would have TOTALLY been on board if she liked them both or at least knew Shane better, but she didn’t even know him and she had to have sex with him so that she could be with Sid??? It was super hot and yet it gave me kinda ick vibes, so I was confused the whole time 😂. Could just be personal preferences and feelings, but those are my thoughts! Still a nice short though

Interesting. Short and sweet. A nice intro to this world of werewolves that includes a bond with a mate (that is only formed once they have sexual intercourse) and a tri-bond (someone related to the male mate has to have sex with the female) for protection. This story was about Layla who is a successful businesswoman with a 10 year plan for her life, and Sid, an artist. Layla is upset about the mating, but of course, can do nothing about it. Ends with HEA, of course.

Well...I kinda got a BIT more than I expected with that whole tri-bond thing...ugh. So not my thing. Aside from that, I enjoyed the story for what it was: two werewolves discovering that they were mates. Layla was strong and a planner, while Sid was easygoing and a bit of a bad boy. And now I have to decide. Do I continue the series even though I have a problem with this whole tri-bond thing? Kinda makes me feel a bit weirded out, honestly. I guess we'll see...
