The Void #1

An Inheritance of Monsters

Rate this book
Here there be monsters.

It was an offer too good to refuse: spend one month in the most haunted house in the world. When the reclusive owner of Duskwood Manor opens the door to five teams of paranormal investigators, there¡¯s no way my team can say no.

But there are no ghosts here.

There are monsters.

They live under my bed, in my closet, and watch me from the shadows, whispering filthy visions in my ear at night.

Begging me to come with them to their world¡ªthe Void, where the monsters roam free¡ where they teach me what it really means to want.

Every night I disappear from the mortal world to play in theirs, swallowed by their insatiable, terrifying shadows.

Consumed by their claws and fangs.

Caressed by slick tentacles and endless, delicious hunger.

But the longer I stay in the Void, the harder it is to ignore its call.

There is a price to pay for stepping foot in this manor¡

And the monsters have demanded me.

An Inheritance of Monsters is a steamy fast-burn standalone romance, with knots, bioluminescent tentacles, and three possessive monsters who will never let the heroine escape their clutches. For mature readers only.

So, this happened

As well as knotting and tentacles with lots of gushing and stretching. It's like a starter course for all things monster-related

The plot? Who cares. Something about a comet and a house full of ghost hunters

What's the motivation behind the monsters though? Why are they fine with sharing one tiny human? Did they volunteer for their job? Do they come from separate monster societies or do they all coexist? Do all monsters live in a reverse harem culture, or are they more polygamist or monogamous? Those are the things I actually want to know, is that weird?

This was everything I wanted it to be and more.

The plot was fun and mysterious and kept most of its secrets until the end.

The characters were all interesting and kept me wanting more from them. Especially the monsters.
Each of them had their own personality with their own quirks and I really liked them.

The sex. Fuck. Me. The sex.
It was hot. It was plentiful. It was monstrous and varied.
And, I know I said this, but it bares repeating. It was HOT.

This book somehow struck the perfect balance of a ton of steam, and a fantastic plot line that was deep and mysterious right beside it.

I really enjoyed this book.
I can¡¯t wait to see if there¡¯s gonna be another book that¡¯s sort of related but not connected, next.
Juno has a cousin, and with the way things ended it seems like this author was setting up her book.
Either way, I¡¯m intrigued. And I will be reading more from this author.

This was fantastic.
I can¡¯t wait to see what she comes out with next.

Monsterfucking at its finest! Reverse-harem including the monster in the closet, the monster under the bed, and a tentacle monster. I could've done without some of the bonkers worldbuilding and lore and so much mate talk, but it was so good otherwise.

2 stars.

? What I liked :

The beginning of the story was rather interesting.

Some of the world-building.

Some of the creativity.

? What I disliked :

An indecisive heroine.

Plot-holes/plot inconsistencies.

Underdeveloped.

Inconsistencies about the characters and how they look/act etc.

Some things were confusing or just did not make sense. (Even for a monster romance.)

Dragged.

Verbose.

Too much was way over the top.
(One of the monster was 10 feet tall¡ and another was 12 feet tall and the sizes of the different monsters c*cks just got more and more over the top and ridiculous etc.)

OTT sex scenes (Even for a monster romance.)

Lacking character development.

Lacking chemistry and connection/romantic build up between the heroine and her 3 monsters.

There was some interesting world-building but there needed to be more and with more depth.

Needed more backstory.

Too much insta love/lust.

They why and how of why the monsters wanted to mate the heroine and be mated with her was not really explained.
(Other than the heroine not being afraid of them and having the ability to see ghosts etc.)

Take me to church. I need Jesus in my life, without a shadow of doubt. ?

I was searching for "The Inheritance Games" but accidentally clicked on this title and curiosity got the better of me, as always. It will be my downfall. ?

One thing lead to another. And another. And another. Long story short, I got it. I read it. All wide eyes and blushing horror. ?

What in the world of tentacle-fuckery-knotted-D-reverse-monster-harem was this? A measly splash of holy water won't do the deed. I need to choke on a Holy Grail filled to the brim with blood of Jesus. ?

2 stars for creativity, really. Never had I ever thought of cephalopod bio-luminescence ability as a literal and figurative "turned on" sign. Don't get me started on the knotty D and whatever the fuck was going on with Voraal's package. ?

I'm so glad I didn't have a stroke reading this, or else my family, upon finding this gem in my cold lifeless hands, would forever remember me by "the tentacle withdrew, showing us the flushed lips of her..." ?

And with that, I leave you folks to judge for yourself. If by any chance, you decided to let your curiosity kill you, please do have your therapist's number saved on speed dial, as well as your local church. Ciao.

While I'd like to say I enjoyed this book, I have to be honest and admit I did not give it the full attention it deserved as I was hooked on the Johnny Depp x Heard trial. The premise was interesting as it introduces all the characters and gives reason for them all to be brought the the estate. Some work as skeptics, psychics and even paranormal bloggers/hunters. The heroine has always had an affinity to the beyond and even her crew is unaware of her abilities especially her seeing ghosts. It doesn't take long for the home to reveal it's secrets to the heroine and rather than run in fear she befriends the monsters under her bed and falls in love. The home has a sordid history and combined with untrustworthy peers and manipulators it will be up to her and her men to literally save the world and reign in the evil. This made for a good read and I loved all her men and their unique physical attributes. If tentacles freak you out, this may not be for you!

I could not get over the mate talk omg every other thing the monsters said was ¡°you¡¯re my mate this¡± ¡°you¡¯re my mate that¡±

We get it. You¡¯re mates.

This book had an okay plot too. It¡¯s what kept me around. I didn¡¯t care for her just 100% being like I just met these literal monsters now all I can think about is f*cking them. It just wasn¡¯t the story I wanted.

A bit of advice, stop reading this review and RUN to grab An Inheritance of Monsters immediately. I¡¯m serious, if you haven¡¯t read the book stop wasting your time here.

I DEVOURED this book in one sitting and now I feel like I already NEED to reread it. It¡¯s not a want, it¡¯s a need. An Inheritance of Monsters had my full attention until the final page and all I can say is WOW. My brain is literally short-circuiting right now. I absolutely refuse to leave the Void and you can¡¯t make me!

Ughhh why does Cate Corvin have to write such phenomenal books?! They¡¯re impossible to let go of without having your soul crushed. I know I¡¯ve said this since Cimmerian Cage but I¡¯m going to keep saying it. Her world building is NEXT LEVEL. She paints the world around you so clearly that it¡¯s almost like you¡¯re watching a 3D movie. Which of course makes it that much harder to say goodbye to.

If you love a hot romance that leaves you needing a spare change of panties but also has an incredible plot you need to grab An Inheritance of Monsters!

A knockout read!! The monsters under the bed definitely go bump in the night in this book that's for sure. Juno (FMC) ends up at Duskwood Island living in a haunted Manor house for a month to film a Paranormal programme. So many clever plot twists here that keep you guessing but for me it was the monsters that I liked the most. As well as them bringing plenty of hot as hell steamy scenarios.

An Inheritance of Monsters was a great read from start to finish I thought. With that ending I wonder if they'll be more books from this world in the future? I really hope so

The only thing I liked about this monster romance was that it continued the tradition of men being the real monsters and monsters were complete sweethearts.

The narrators were solid, though. So audio is a good call if you still want to give this a read.

Thank you to Tantor for providing me with an ALC

If these are the monsters living under my bed, WTF, why did nobody tell me sooner? I wouldn't be scared of the shadows as a child. Seriously! I had a pretty weird shadow on my bedroom door, in the shape of the man's head, I shit you not. I was terrified of it. Later I realised that it was the shape of my chandelier that created that weird illusion but I still preferred to read under the blanket with the flashlight. And that's how I fucked up my eyesight. Oh, well.

Five groups of paranormal investigators have been invited to one of the most haunted location in the world¡ªDuskwood Manor. Located on a private island outside Innsmouth, the manor's history is steeped in blood and riddled with disappearances that have never been solved.

Juno Weaver, the host of Spirit Squad, also has a history filled with tragedy. Following the death of her brother, she discovered she had the ability to see ghosts. When she receives the invitation to Duskwood Manor, she and her 2 cohorts jump at the opportunity.

But there's a reason each person was chosen for this once-in-a-lifetime chance to discover the manor's guarded secrets, and Juno soon realizes ghosts aren't the only thing the island welcomes into its embrace. There are also monsters and portals to a strange world called the Void. It soon becomes apparent that she has a destiny to fulfill.

3.5 stars, rounded down because it just wasn't a 4-star read for me. The story was interesting, the characters were alright, and the spice was good. It didn't knock my socks off, but it was enough to keep me reading and I will likely read the sequel.

This one was a rollercoaster, ladies and gentleman. If you're familiar with Cedar Point, I'm not talking about the Top Thril Dragster, where you just go straight up slowly to unreal heights and plunge directly back down very quickly. No, I'm talking about the Maverick, with a ton of smaller very fast paced hills while your cart flips round and round until you're so disoriented you don't know which way is up. But that's the thing about rollercoasters, isn't it? you always end up loving it at the end, desperate do repeat the experience.

It was the same for this book. At first I thought it was going to be a typical monster book, but then there was so so so much more by the end, and I literally can't say anything more without it being a spoiler. I don't even want to leave myself a spoiler reminder because I'm afraid someone will read it and not get the full experience.

Rest assured, dear reader, that this book was amazing. The main character didn't always behave as I wished her to, but who's perfect? Guess who? her monsters. that's who.

Curious about the ending. One ghost hunter and three monsters Voraal, Zirin and Rask. I liked Juno, it was just everyone around her that was a problem, except Porter but who knows where he ended up. Out of the three monsters I liked Rask with his under the bed offerings. A bit of mystery but mainly ghosts and mate bonding.

New author. So, new author qualification.

They fall into one of three categories:

? Meaning: Happy to read this author again.
? Meaning: I'll need to read one more book to decide
? Meaning: Nope (pretty self-explanatory)

This is the general feel of the book:

Credit:

Both the size difference (yep, we're talking 10~12 feet) and the feel of the story.

Yes, it's monster smut, but it was so... sweet. Whatever angst or mystery they tried to throw at us, it didn't stick. The answers were way too obvious. All three guys were kind, caring and surprisingly innocent. I could tell them apart only because one was a cute Cthulhu, one had six eyes and four arms and the last one was the "normal" one.

The FMC started really bitter and a bit annoying. Everyone is against her, everyone has offended her, everyone wants to pick a fight with her. She had a reason to hate all those characters, but her rages and her "I know in my heart I'm right" made her sound bitter and condescending. The fate of all those people also didn't feel that satisfying, given how helpless they were compared to her. Even the "most villainous villain" was too cartoonish for his end to be very fulfilling.

The plot was very simple, it really needed to be 100 pages shorter.

The writing was pretty good (for what it is), but the style is not for me.

Conclusion: ?

Multiple planes of existence and RH? Yes please!

? RH
? 3 diff monsters (1 with tentacles)
? DP
? size difference
? other world
? no miscommunication!
? multiple POV

Really enjoyed this book after getting over what I thought the title eluded to and realized the truth... It makes a lot more sense at the end!!
This book has multiple conflicts and a few times I had to remind myself there had to be an HEA... But in a good way.
The author sets up the h's back story during the book in a way that I loved because when she is presented with a certain situation you aren't left wondering why.

I think this book has inspired me to explore more mystery genres because I adored the unraveling suspense, disappearances, and history behind the house more than anything. (And I wanted so much more information and exploration on it!)

The romance was a little lackluster to me, there was this pressing intensity for them to mate and bond, but the romantic interactions themselves lacked the consuming passion or action I wanted to see as a result.

I also needed more reasoning as to why specifically Juno and why specifically them, the monsters. I think the amount of sex they had was supposed to support their connection, but it just became boring. Their eagerness, dedication, and love felt unfounded.

I wanted depth, but it felt a little too hollow.

Juno was pretty likable though. She wasn¡¯t overly nosy, didn¡¯t try to fix her friend's problems, wasn't particularly moral, and didn¡¯t fight her attraction to the monsters or the void.

I didn't hate this book but I also didn't absolutely love it either, it was a nice easy read.
I guessed the twist at the end about 60% in to the book, but it was still well paced good to read.

This was my first monster romance book and it was RH and I wasn't sure how i'd feel about it but I was surprised. I liked the monster characters and the sex scenes were spicy enough for me.

I would describe this book as, think Scooby Doo, murder mystery twist.

4/5.

to be completely honest, i have no clue what to rate this. i genuinely enjoyed it but it just felt so long (even though it was only 351 pages). the smut was a little weird but that¡¯s because one of the monsters literally had fucking tentacles on his face and the other had six eyes. that was just a wee bit hard for me to wrap my head around. especially the fact that the fmc was so quick to accept them as her mates. idk. i was reading this purely for the smut but there ended up being just so much plot. so if you¡¯re going to read this only for the smut, i suggest not (unless you¡¯re willing to get sucked into the MASSIVE plot). there was just so much going on and i genuinely ended up enjoying it. i was pleasantly surprised. overall, i don¡¯t really know what i want to say about this book. anyways.

This was actually one of the most boring stories I've ever read. Everything about it was just so dull.
The characters, the smut, the writing, all bland as toast.
I almost put it down but it was an easy read so I finished but honestly if you haven't read it yet you're not missing out.

There was absolutely no chemistry between the main characters and the mfc just went along with everything with no push back whatsoever, it was weird to me.

Even the smut was boring, you won't even be blushing. There just wasnt enough between the characters to make their intimate moments believable much less enjoyable.

All in all I feel like I wasted my time.

It just wasn't for me, and that's what I love about reading. It's subjective .

I love monsters . I love smutt. I love having a plot with depth and family history. However, this just didn't connect for me. I found the dialog choppy, and the "monsters" didn't give me a chance to fall in love with them . I will probably still read the second one cause I need to know aha.

The first part of this will be my review. The second half will be the notes I made while reading it & they have a lot of spoilers! Out of all the books I've read with multiple worlds, this has to be top 5. There was so much mystery surrounding the island and the Void. Mrs. Marsh was an odd one, but everything made sense at the end of the book. I adore Juno and her men and love how much we got from this book ?? it reminds me of a game of Mystery, but with paranormal activity ?

Going in completely blind. I haven't read reviews or the blurb. I'm making my own little trend here ? The cover is perfection ? Okay I'm going in! I think this is a RH! There are multiple names for the list of chapters ?? The world building and history for this plot is really rich. I'm actually really into it - usually I have to fight the urge to skim it, because it feels too mechanical. This isn't like that at all.
Why does Mrs. Marsh seem particularly interested in Juno?? ?
So we've got some rivalry and arch nemesis planning sabotage. I'm not sure I like Crispy or Sierra, we definitely don't like Carson (arch nemesis who was just mentioned). Crispy and Sierra are Juno's team members on Spirit Squad (paranormal investigators), but they seem back handed to me - even this early on. We've met two "monsters" Zirin (octopus dude & Zi is what I'm calling him) & I can't wait to see what he can do with those suction cups *wink wink.. nudge nudge* so Zi transported Juno into the sea? I think that's right.. anyways he transported her while she was having a bath. We got a different point of view from the monster in the closet, but he's not been introduced to Juno yet so I can't introduce him here. Then we have Rask. He's the monster under the bed. He left her gifts and she decided to give him a bobby pin - he purred. He actually purred a lot. He's a happy little kitty ? He's got 4 arms, a lot of eyes and a huge ?. We all know that's the most important attribute. Anywho..... let's get back to it! We have been introduced to Voraal. His monster form seems to mostly work with shadows. He and Juno had their first interaction in the library and what an impressive interaction it was. Definitely some sexual tension here ? So remember when Zirin transported Juno somewhere? It is called the Void & the Void is apparently very interested in Juno. I'm also starting to wonder if the title is hinting at Juno inheriting the manor. This could explain why Mrs. Marsh seems more interested in her... Zirin to Juno: "A human who came to my world and will be my mate." Tell me more, Zi. I'm here for it! & I knew those little suction cups would come in handy! ? Crispy has been injured badly and has left the island. Sierra is being her moody self. The Voidstorm is connected to the storm that is hitting the island and Rask explains that one can not exist without the other. The statues (Idols), we are introduced during world building in the beginning of the book, are also present in the Void.
Rask has also mentioned that Juno is his mate. His very fragile, little mate to be exact. So we've got a whole thing here. PS there's a knot and good Lord I have a weakness for this shit. In Rask's POV he mentioned that these three will claim a mate before the comet. It feels like shit is about to hit the fan! He takes her to his home and is preening like a peacock showing off all his treasure. I'm extremely interested in seeing what he means when he says: "She was too small to push into. I would need the Klee prince to come and work her size for me, using his slick to stretch her out before her body could accept my cock without pain."...... it's about to get ?Juno sees Voraal's true form in the Void!!!! Mrs. Marsh has to be the Lady of Dark Waters. Holy shit ? I am willing to bet my Kindle unlimited subscription that Juno is actually Sophie Marsh! I take it all back. That had to be way too long ago to be her.. she is connected to them somehow. When her, Sierra and Crispy took a picture together at the manor her face was blurred out. She found a room with pictures where women had the same thing. Voraal told her this means the void has marked them, but it was all Marsh women... so... PS Juno seems totally on board with mating with all of them. Sierra has officially made her intentions clear with what she wants to do with Spirit Squad and Juno realizes she just doesn't give a shit. Someone stole her black book and we know Carson was planning on it, but that seems to obvious. It has to be Sierra ?
We all need a Rask in our lives ??¡°She likes my fangs,¡± Rask said proudly. ¡°She will like your face noodles.¡±
I don't think Eloise took the black book, I'm betting creepy mccreperton (Porter) did and planted a page on Eloise. His apology seems a little too convenient... ??¡â? WAIT! Juno thought she saw Mrs. Marsh smile after Eloise had died, what if it was Mrs. Marsh?! They didn't find the black book in Eloise's things... ?
YO Carson and Sierra were just busted with their pants down ?
So Porter now lives in the Void? Dude was legit freaking out, has spent his whole life disproving paranormal activities/entities and now wants to just live in the Void to explore it and find out what else is there. Even though Juno warned him of danger. This book is wild ? so I guess this means Porter didn't take the black book & since Sierra is banging the enemy, I stand with my initial thought that she stole it. Okay now it's looking like Sierra didn't take the black book. This book is nothing like I expected - everything I've guessed has been incorrect and more elements just keep popping up. It still seems to obvious for it to be Carson, but what do I know?
Zirin now has legs and is a protector because he and Juno have fully mated! CARSON DID STEAL THE BLACK BOOK! Juno is a Marsh by blood. Mrs. Marsh is gone? She left an envelope for Juno with the key and an envelope that read "your inheritance". Carson knocked Juno out and now has her and Sierra tied up. I'm diving back in! He wants to sell one of her monsters to the highest bidder ? Carson was sacrificed, but onto the bigger issues. If the Marsh women are all blessed with the Void-sight, that has got to mean that Juno's mother wasn't her real mother. Otherwise she wouldn't have needed Eloise, she would have been able to see her son's Ghost... her father would have been the full human.. so who is her real mother? Sarah was her great grandmother, Mrs. Marsh said that Juno's grandmother & mother married human men. Juno is now the Lady of Dark Waters So we got to the part where her aunt and her mother are confirmed to be Marsh's so why did her mother need Eloise & why did her parents not believe her when she said she could see ghosts?! We have finished the book and I gotta say it was a solid read. We have to give it to the author ?? if you've read this whole thing you're my new bff ?

Oddly interesting.

My niece shared this book with me, and halfway through it, all I could think was - Oh my gods, my niece read this (forgetting, of course, that she is an almost 30 year old young lady, and not a little girl), quickly followed by the thought - and this is why she shared it with her aunt.

Oddly interesting accurately describes this book for me.

That is not to say I did not enjoy it, I did.

I rather liked the story itself and the buildup to Juno discovering the answers she sought. The pacing is good. At no time did I feel like it was dragging - which is always buzzkill when reading a book.

Is it something I would have picked up on my own? Probably not... but I am rather glad my niece shared it with me. And I look forward to reading the other book by this author that she shared with me.

I¡¯ve been in a bit of a reading funk this month and this book pulled me right out of it. I wanted to ignore all of my responsibilities so I could just focus on this book. I even alternated between the audio and kindle version so I could get the maximum amount of reading done as quickly as possible.

Juno and her team of paranormal investigators were invited, along with a few other teams, to spend a month on Duskwood Island and investigate the manor house there. As someone who sees ghosts, Juno thought she knew what to expect on the island, but she couldn¡¯t have been further from the truth. There were things hiding in the shadows and under the beds in Duskwood Manor and soon the visitors were risking injury or death by staying on the island. As Juno investigated she found a world beyond her imagining, purpose, and love.

I loved everything about this book! The premise, the characters, the world building, and the spice were all fantastic. I loved Juno, she dedicated her life to researching and investigating paranormal occurrences and despite being able to actually see ghosts, she pretended she didn¡¯t and relied solely on what other could see. She was kind and open minded but fiercely dedicated to truth and hated those who took advantage of others. She was so calm
in the face of all of these new discoveries. Almost too calm. When she met her monsters, they were almost more afraid her than she was of them.

Cate¡¯s monsters were as kind and caring as they were monstrous. Each was unique and I loved how there was zero question about them sharing her.

I listened to the audiobook and thought Rachel Leblange did a great job as Juno. I also really liked her deep voices for the monsters. But John Solo was fantastic. I didn¡¯t even realize he was the voice for all of the monsters until I thought one of them sounded familiar. He had a distinct voice for each guy and they were all great!
