Being snowed in isn't so bad when you're on vacation with your two best friends. And when Kasey reveals he's a gay romance author, the vacation takes a turn for the steamier. Mitch already knows all about it, being bisexual, but Warren -- Warren hasn't got a clue... until he watches Mitch help Kasey with "research" for his next novel and starts seeing snow melt.
Rhianne Aile has an unhealthy relationship with her computer, iced tea, and chocolate. Growing up, she split her time between Oklahoma and Chicago, making her equally fond of horses, skyscrapers, cowboys, and men in well-tailored suits. Facilitating retreats for women and authors keeps her traveling enough to stay happy.
I can't believe I accidentally re-read this because it appeared with a different cover... I didn't even remember having read it last year, but as I wrote a review back then, I apparently did read it. And even after my second time, I have literally nothing to add to my old review, LOL.
Ooooh man, this could have been so good!
I hate it when a really perfect chance is wasted.
Three friends journalists at some newspaper have a vacation together in a mountain cabin. Why do three presumably straight men have a holiday together without girlfriends?
Who cares? LOL.
One of the guys, Kasey, pursues a ‘second career as a romance author. And while the guys are snowed in in their cabin, he continues writing on his latest book which is a gay themed romance. However, Mitch an openly bisexual guy informs Kasey about the scenes not being accurate. Trying to educate him and also feed Warren’s curiosity (who is a shy straight guy), he suggests showing his friends how gay sex works in a DIY kind of way.
The setting sounds absolutely amazing, but the execution left so much to be desired. Flat dialogue, constant references to ‘the blond or ‘the older man and especially the merciless POV flips that made my head spin. Sadly I didn’t enjoy this very much. And that’s surprising considering it’s basically one long sex scene with three guys and a hot tub.
I think the missing back stories behind the characters and the only slightly difference in the guys characters prevented this story from taking form.
And of course, having two straight characters that are supposed to turn gay for a threesome is quite a feat. Unfortunately it didn’t succeed at all here.
This was super hot, but I'd really like to have seen it padded out a bit more. As it is, it's just three friends on vacation, two "straight", one bi, doing a bit of experimenting. The dialogue was fairly cheesy, but the sex was smoking, and this coming from someone who skims a lot of the sex scenes these days.
The head hopping was a bit much, and we're given really no details on who these guys are, other than friends and co-workers, with one moonlighting as an erotic romance author, dipping his toes into the M/M side of things for the first time. Nothing else to really let you know these guys, or what's going to happen after this little vacation.
But still, it's a hot little interlude, if a bit like a "Dear Gay Penthouse" letter. I would love to see this padded out into a full length book.
August Flavor of the Month challenge The blurb about says it all - not much more story, but lots of sex. I think to enjoy this story you have to believe that GFY is possible for someone who was totally straight up to now (and then to jump into it not only with one but with two guys). I think this is a good example of books I enjoyed more when I first started reading m/m but now my expectations have changed a bit.
This is really 3.5 stars. It was a nice, hot little book. Definitely a woman's fantasy of what 3 guys (2 straight and 1 bi) would get up to if they were snowed in. I liked the way the author stepped the guys through everything. They didn't jump each other and have a big pile-up right away. The progression (how the author got from page 1 to the final scene) felt natural, or as 'natural' as could be with this type of plot. But what bugged me about the book was that the author switched POVs constantly. Almost every paragraph. It was distracting, and sometimes hard to figure out whose head I was supposed to be in. Maybe it's just the author in me, and how 'no headh-hopping' has been drummed into my head, but I really wish the author wouldn't have switched POV so much. And I can see why she swapped so often - the book is short, and the author was trying to give the reader a look into each guy's head at various points within each scene. On one hand, it was nice to know what the 2 straight guys were thinking during the sex scenes, and how they affected the bisexual guy. But on the other hand, I would have enjoyed the book more if she would have stayed longer in one POV and marked each shift with a POV shift break.
Like many of you, I do enjoy a smutty read from time to time. Unlike many of you, I don't generally get into the whole m/m thing.
Oh I tried, But every time I've forayed into the gay erotica or some times even the menage world, I've been disappointed.
Ever since those exercises in futility, I've stayed away from the m/m, m/m/m, m/m/m/m, m/f/m, m/f/m/f - well, you get the idea. You'd think I'd learn from all that right?
Not Zeekie. I tried this one after reading a good review on it awhile back.
I hated it. Nothing rang true, from the experienced "bi" character who clearly was full on gay, to the straight character who never would have touched the other two men with a ten foot pole in real life. Different times I felt uncomfortable because it felt like an older man taking advantage in a nambla sorta way and different times I was wincing and rolling my eyes at the ridiculous dialogue and actions the authors put the characters through.
My biggest problem? The authors clearly don't know men. Gay or Straight. As much as they tried to make a point of informing us that many women who write gay romance often make the mistake of making the men act like women rather then gay men, they ended up doing the exact same thing. None of this cabin m/m/m, oooo let's teach the straight guy how hot it is to watch men f*ck, e-short story, worked for me. None of it.
So 1 out of 5 from me. (And yes, you're right, I should have been able to tell that by the butt ugly guys on that awful cover, so sue me for my momentary lapse in judgment, okay?)
First of all, I rarely read erotica and Snowed In was that, IMO. Then, I also rarely read short stories and Snowed In is very short. So...for me it worked because those guys are best friends and if I have to read erotica, I rather the sex be between best friends than strangers that met in a bar.
As for the sex itself, I did find it arousing and I'm sure if I had a dick, it would happily agree. The ending was appropriately open-ended and if I were one of those that needed an HFN at least, no matter what, I would still not have complained - those guys were headed for a long-term menage, as far as I was concerned, if not a permanent one.
I went back to Diplomacy after that and I should finish it today.
I liked this read. I bought it because I saw Madeleine Urban was one of the authors.
The good: No shortage of hot man-on-man sex. Explicit, graphic and beautifully descriptive without ever crossing over into raunchy or sleazy. Maintained a sweet tone and manged to avoid gratuitous angst or turmoil.
The not so good: The pacing was off. The set-up seemed contrived. The 3 men could have been anywhere with a fireplace, bed & a hot tub. Being snowed in was hardly mentioned and had no bearing on the plot. The premise of a book plot being the catalyst for the action was clever, but felt forced. And the ending just begged for a sequel...and there is no sign of that ever happening.
All and all, a book I enjoyed and would recommend to fans of the M/M genre.
Three friends go on a vacation together. One is bi the other two are straight. They get to goofing around the the two straight ones aren't so straight anymore. Cute story and the confusion and tentativeness of the two straight ones was freaking hot! Very enjoyable little read.
I couldn't get into this story because I kept thinking how unlikely it would be that two straight guys would all of a sudden be comfortable in a threesome. I think if the story had been a little longer, and I had gotten to know the guys more, maybe then I could have believed the sexy times they all shared.
Kasey, Mitch and Warren are colleague and best friend, of different age and predisposition: Kasey is 25 years old and bi-curious, Mitch is 30 years and bisexual (even if it came out to me more as gay) and Warren is 38 years old and straight. They plan to spend a weekend in a mountain cabin and a snowstorm forces them to stay inside the cabin and in near quarter. Kasey is an erotic romance in disguise, and when they are forced to find a way to spend the afternoon, he decides to write a bit: Mitch and Warren realize that he is writing a gay sex scene, but Mitch questions the reality of that scene. Kasey dares him to show how it should be done, but not on the paper, but for real. Mitch is willing, but he is worried for Warren, who seems a bit flustered to have an impromptu porn movie acted in front of him. But then the stupor turns in excitement and also straight Warren falls in the trap of curiosity.
The story is not very long, 66 pages, and it spans for only a night, so there are no clear answer at the end of it. Anyway, I like very much Mitch's character, so open and friendly; just in the past he was a bit interested in both his friends, but he probably never thought to have a chance with them. I don't believe that in this moment he is searching the true love, maybe he is willing to play and if something follows, he is not against the idea. Kasey on the other hand sees a chance to try his hand in something he probably was interested before, and the possibility to play with two men he trusts is too good to let go. Warren is the more puzzling character... he should be the one that never in the past thought about such a thing, but, truth be told, he is not so skittish to the idea.
We don't know what it will happen next, they could stay good friends (with benefits) or they could build something more, and, maybe, the one who was the less likely, is the one who would be something more for the three of them.
The start of this story offered a good excuse for the ensuing sex scenes of what was essentially a PWP. Three best friends and work colleagues are snowed in at their vacation cabin. Kasey is outed as an erotic het romance writer when he tries to work on his current manuscript. He has been asked to include a m/m sub-plot in his current novel, only he has no experience to base his m/m sex scene on. He asks Mitch, his bisexual best friend for help in getting it right. Waren, the straight best friend, is rather uncomfortable with the idea of Kasey writing m/m erotica, but becomes curious. The scenes flowed fairly well from one to the other, helped by alcohol and curiosity. The pov shifts between the three men, giving a glimpse of their emotions and motivations (mainly "that's hot and I'm turned on") as they move from speculation to kisses and further.
It was a fun read, but did not draw me in completely. I was left vaguely dissatisfied, maybe because the initial excuse of Kasey's writing vanishes about half-way through. Maybe because of the hints of "seeing deeper feelings" didn't fit with the rest of the mood for me. The three men might have deeper feelings for each other, or develop them, but I didn't think they would be thinking about them at that point.
Skeletal point: a gay man shows his two straight best friends the outs [and ins:] of gay sex, brought on by an inaccurately written gay-romance scene by one of them, and instigated by a thrilling game of Truth or Dare.
I liked it because there was no angst, the comfort level between the three men is established from the beginning and never really changes [they HAVE, after all, been best friends for years:], and because it was a light and schmexy read. The scenes between them are HOT, both between two or all three, and there is enough schmex to fully satisfy without going over-board into the 'TOO-much' realm that some others dip into far too often [*cough*Sean.Michael*cough*:].
Of course, if the two 'straight' men were completely straight none of those scenes would have happened, but for the sake of m/m [m/m/m:] love, it works. ^_^ I snickered especially hard when Mitch compared how a gay man would react to being hit on by another man, versus how a straight man would react [and poor Warren, there in the middle - tsk, tsk:].
Cute, and an excellent read to breeze through between heavier novels.
I usually like this type of story. The ones I normally read are usually pretty much unrealistic but I don't mind because they are still good stories.
Not this one.
Hmmmm.... 3 friends. 1 is bisexual. 2 are "supposedly" completely straight. But suddenly after a game of truth or dare and some totally ridiculous talk of acting out a scene of a m/m story (that one of the straight guys is trying to write) suddenly they are all three on the floor playing out the scene. With very little awkwardness on the part of the two straight guys. Oh, and then they make their way to a hot tub where they all three get down and dirty............ again, no awkwardness from the two straights. Two totally straight guys jumping into it that quick? I've read books where it has happened but none that were this bad.
I'm glad it was a very short story. But as short as it was, I still almost stopped mid way.
It was that bad.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Three men, one straight, one bi, and one bi-curious. Add a lot of snow that keeps them indoors, a lot of booze to lower the inhibitions and a game of truth or dare, adult version.
This little novella was a fun read, and there were LOTS of hot sex. Urban and Aile are quite the masters of gay for you. None of the men had to be made bend backwards to get to where it all aimed at. My only niggle: the hot tub. I hate underwater scenes.
I enjoyed this little story though as it is set all in one night, there is no history to the characters other than they all work together - so no idea if Kasey or Warren had ever felt they might be gay. I would have enjoyed more back stories but it is a hot little read
More like 2 1/2. The situation struck me as pretty unlikely, and the constant POV shifts were maddening. It was terrible, but it certainly could have been better.
Don’t know how I stumbled onto another three-way so quickly, but here I am. Also, this cover.
Mitch (cover boy), Warren, and Kasey are best friends and they’re holed up in a cabin while on vacation. Kasey is tapping away on his laptop when Warren tells him that he needs to chill with the work because they’re on vacation. Mitch joins them and they get into what Kasey is actually doing: writing a gay sex scene. Mitch is bi and it only piques his interest because Kasey writes M/F, not M/M. Warren is straight and it freaks him out a little. Mitch reads over Kasey’s shoulder and tells him that it wouldn’t go the way he’s written it between a bi guy and his chronically hetero best friend. They talk about it some and Warren’s still freaking out, quietly, so they switch gears and play poker.
After poker, they play Truth or Dare, the adult version, to help Kasey with his “research. And I’m sure you can guess where that led.
I have to say, it was a pretty nice development from one bi guy and his two straight friends to where they ended up. It was short, so not a lot of time for character exploration, but since the goal was to get a three-way going, it succeeded. And although it had the gooey edge of cheesy porn, it wasn’t that bad and managed to get better as it progressed.
I think this is the only non-Urban & Roux Madeleine Urban story I’ll read, the others lack appeal.
Although short, the characters 'depths were well written. The apprehensive of Warren. The adventurous side of kasey. And the domineering side of Mitch. Character names were apt too
Pure fantasy short story. While I always love m-m stories, and even more love m-m-m, I am rarely interested in those who spend more time on the sex than the story. This was a rare exception. Almost the entire story is about the three guys getting it on together, the little bit at the beginning that isn't is solely to set the stage (reminded me of right before a pizza gets delivered and a character is whining about not having money to pay for it).
The story was not very realistic, things went far too smoothly and there was barely any nerves from the "straight" guys. Sometimes you have to put away logic and just enjoy the story. That said, guys will do all sorts of things they never expected if they want to get off and they think no one will find out. Something like this would probably be unlikely, but I know a great many guys who are gay only on vacation with the boys.
Now I want to see this be the script for a super hot porn.
I was initially disappointed with this book due to the number of pages (66) which I felt should have been offered free on a website rather than charged for. But I wanted to give it a chance so kept an open mind as I absolutely adored the authors' book , Unfortunately this did not live up to their potential. The characters were underdeveloped and thrown into a situation that was unrealistic and had absolutely no build up - ironic when the situation was about a straight guy writing homoerotic fiction, and was told by his gay friend that it needed more build up! The saving grace was the sex scene(s) as they did hint at the heat in their previous book, but unfortunately heat can not stand on its own without a good story.
This was a hot one for sure! Three hot guys that are best friends decide to vacay in the snow for a couple days together. One is bi. And the other two...Well let's just say by the end of this vacay no one is straight ;)
I just wish it was longer. And the way it ends feels like it kinda suggests something more is on the way. I hope so!
Although it was short I still felt like I began to care about the characters. Warren at times got on my nerves with his hesitation. But all in all I enjoyed this book.
Hate to rate stories so poorly but this was one (short) book which I found really pushed believability boundaries. Two straight men (not bi-curious even) end up getting into deep kisses then blow jobs, frotting and, finally, sex with their bisexual best friend? Well, the sex imagery was hottish but the believability factor just wasn't.
OK 1.5* because the sex was a little hot but that's about it.
I loved this longer short story! It's super hot & full of sweet and tender moments. The only thing that I liked less, is that it's too short... I want to know more about what happens to those 3 guys after they leave the cabin! Maybe there is/will be a sequel... 4.5 stars
You can read all the reviews for why this is an amazing wonderful book to read. It really is too but what kept it from a five star was the abrupt ending. I thought maybe there was a second book but I haven't found it yet.
