This Little Golden Book is a 2.5 for me. Featuring the ever-popular Llama Llama from the series by Anna Dewdney, it describes a scenario with which some youngsters will be familiar. When new transplants, the Antelopes, move into the neighborhood, Mama takes Llama Llama along to welcome them. The Antelopes' daughter, Audrey, is the same age as Llama Llama and he is curious about her prosthetic leg. She doesn't mind his curiosity, and tells him it actually helps her move better. Even though Llama Llama likes Audrey and notices that she has a bicycle, he doesn't invite her to ride with his friends at first because he worries that his friends will forsake him for her. After a word from Mama, he reconsiders, invites her, and the gang spend time riding around the neighborhood, the park, and even visiting the bakery owned by the father of one of Llama Llama's friends. Audrey is even able to pitch in when the soccer team is short one player. Although the message of acceptance here is welcome, it might have been a stronger book if Llama Llama had struggled a bit more with his feelings. Still, he provides a good example of how to be kind and welcoming to others for the younger set of readers. As always with this series, the animal characters in the illustrations are adorable even if anthropomorphized.

Anne Dewdney's Llama Llama series is the inspiration for this Little Golden Book. In this narrative story, Llama Llama meets the new neighbor Aubrey Antelope who is physically challenged. Llama's anxiety about introducing Aubrey to friends comes less from worrying about her disabilities and more from worrying that his friends will like her better. In the end, his anxiety subsides, and Aubrey joins the gang of friends and fits right in.
