Raising the dust of battle, the stench of conspiracy and the bittersweet aroma of love, Krishna Deva Raya: The Boy Who Would Be King tells the dramatic tale of a valiant soldier who has come to be known as one of India's greatest emperors.
It is a story of a naive boy who rose to the highest status through hard work, dedication, and adherence to the empire. This fast-paced story provides various heart-whelming ties between brothers, friends, lovers, and parents, but most noteworthy is the one with their homeland.
This part of the series delivers details about Krishna Deva Raya's expeditions before becoming the sovereign. Overall, it was an enjoyable read and if you love reading about Indian historical fiction stories, pick this book now. I recommend it.
What a great way to spend Independence day by reading an immensely well researched book on Indian history.
I have only been enlightened with the Mughal and British Indian history till now and have always been keen to know more about the past. This book is the first part of the Krishna Deva Raya Series talking about the great Indian emperor Krishna Deva Raya of Tuluva Dynasty.
To give you a quick background: Krishnadevaraya (17 January 1471 17 October 1529) was an emperor of the Vijayanagara Empire, who reigned from 1509 to 1529. He was the third monarch of the Tuluva dynasty, and is considered to be one of the greatest rulers in Indian history. He ruled the largest empire in India after the decline of the Delhi Sultanate.Presiding over the empire at its zenith, he is regarded as an icon by many Indians.
This part highlights the key milestones of a young boy on his way to be crowned as the King! We follow him through his teenage years, see him grow into not just a man of courage but of values and humility! We get to see how pure a heart he has and how deeply he could love. The love life of Krishna Deva Raya was as exciting as his war stories!
I'm astonished at how beautifully the author has tried to capture so much of this man in just 300 pages.
To say this legend's life could be confined into a few books would be an understatement!
I feel so warm at the rise of these writings upon our great Indian emperors and that historical fiction is not just limited to British and Mughal Rulers now.
I'm keenly awaiting to read the next part of this book!
Beautifully captured information about the rise of the Vijayanagara empire from the Saluva to the Tuluva rule. The story about Krishna Deva Raya's life, his family background and how he rose to be an emperor is simply gripping. Loved this one.
‘The Boy Who Would be King is the first book in the Krishna Deva Raya series, traditionally published, written by Abhijeeth Hiliyana. It’s a historical fiction staged against the medieval period of South India. The novel narrates the rise of a young man named Krishna to a prominent position during the Vijayanagar Samrajya’s hey days to fall due to internal conspiracies and conflicts and invasion from outsiders.
Some pages in the story and it become evident that the Vijayanagar Samrajya was rebuilt delicately and Bahmani is their biggest external enemy. As soon as the leadership of Krishna destroys Chittakula city port and wins back Gersoppa, he rises to rewards and recognition in the state. But there are many that plot conspiracies to bring down the emperor. Tuluva Krishna has uncompromising patriotism towards the state, like his father. But will it be utilized at the right time and place?
The novel builds the story gradually, step by step. Readers will get insights in the mechanism of state working, personal and family life of Krishna, and his father and brother’s role in keeping the state safe. But the question is for how long? As you reach midway, you begin feeling that Krishna is working for the right people and kingdom. But after the death of his father, things turn untoward for him. All previous ministers of the kingdom are removed; new and unknown faces control the weak emperor. Krishna fumes with anger. Will he do something like coup or simply walk away as instructed?
The novel ends at a cliffhanger and it will be exciting to read the next book in the Krishna Deva Raya series. Undoubtedly, Abhijeeth Hiliyana writes with a fascinating charm.
I read Abhijeeth Hiliyana's Krishna Deva Raya last month and I think if you are a historical or mythological fiction fan, you’ll definitely want to get your hands on it!
This is the first installment in the Krishna Deva Raya Series and depicts the story of how a young boy went on to become the revered Krishnadevaraya. Through the many victories, sacrifices, and such decisive actions at such a young age, it became evident that Krishna was no ordinary man.
What drew me in despite my disinterest in the genre was definitely the prologue. Talk about hooking someone right at the beginning! The conversation between Krishna and Vyasatheertha was really meaningful.
What I really liked about Abhijeet Hiliyana’s writing style is how simple and effortless it is. More often than not, historical accounts can be intimidating, but the author’s adoption of such an uncomplicated voice, helped me follow the story without any hiccups. The tone was such that it complimented the scenes; during the action scenes, it was quite sharp, during the family political scenes, it was quite dramatic, and during Krishna’s monologues, there was a sense of loss and longing.
To sum up, I really enjoyed reading the book. From the writing to the portrayal of the character, there was very little to not like about this book!

From Krishna grappling with his father's death to love lost and found to his becoming an astute administrator, crown prince and later king, this thrilling, unputdownable series brings to life the vibrant history of southern India and the richness of its culture. ___ "Krishna Deva Raya, the lord of three kings, the absolute ruler of the Samrajya, whose very name inspires terror in the hearts of his enemies."-
I have never read from this author's work before but I really liked this book & am eager to delve into Book 2 too! (KRISHNA DEVA RAYA: The Crown of Vijayanagara).
This is the story of a 16 year old boy who got hands-on experience of the battlefield, of being a leader, a strategist, a fighter right on the front. With his father gone to pursue higher & more important pursuits, Krishna was left to adhere to his commands & work on smaller fronts. With an inbuilt ability to fight, passion to conquer & restlessness for loss of patience, Krishna Dev took his time to learn the tricks of the game, the patience & strategic mindset it needed & other leadership skills. But he was a keen & quick learner.
This story is historical fiction with information sought from other books, movies & other secondary data. The focus is on Krishna Dev, as a learner, a leader, a patriotic ruler & one of a kind conqueror who kept his people & land secure as long as he lived. The book begins with Krishna on the death bed wondering about the future of his land & the wolves that surround it.
In addition to these aspects, a soft corner, the love life of the ruler is also emphasised here. A major theme is that of Chinna Devi, one of the three primary wives of Krishna. Chinna has been depicted as a temple dancer. It definately adds to the story.
I loved the learnings of Krishna & the tact that he quickly learnt as the story progresses. I also admired his emotional side, his loyalty to his land & his people & to his father & brother.
‘You need not be stronger than the bull only smarter'.-
It was a good read that i finished in 1 sitting & now i want to learn what happened next & read book 2. Also i applaud the author for bringing forth the lesser known/ forgotten faces that definately need to be remembered.

In this story, "Appaji" the minister of Krishna Deva Raya, played a vital role as an advisor and well-wisher in Krishna Deva Raya's life. I loved to read historical fiction and this book full filled my desire for this genre. Our country is rich historically and from this type of story, we learned many things. I am recommending everyone to read this, especially history lovers.
An Indian historical fiction book, is the part 1 of his “Krishna Deva Raya Book Series. This book narrates the story of the initial years of famous Indian King, Krishna Deva Raya of Kingdom Vijayanagar.
My fascination with Krishna Deva Raya began with his witty, and memorable interactions with his quick-witted courtier, Tenali Rama. But then as we read more about him in school, I became even more impressed by this king who stood up for his subjects. So when I heard about Abhijeeth Hiliyana’s book about this mighty Indian king, I jumped at the chance to read it!
And I am so glad I did too. This is one of the best Indian historical novels I have read. The amount of research done by the author, and his excellent narration made this story so immersive, and real.
The world building is exquisite, and so believable. I felt a part of everything, and easily traveled back in time all from the comfort of my home!
This is a book that I finished in one sitting, and yet didn’t want it to end ever. So, I kept picking it up again and again to reread my favourite excerpts. And this book has so many memorable quotes 😍
'Death comes to all, Krishna. Most simply disappear from the hearts and minds of the people. A few remain as a cherished memory for decades or sometimes centuries. But your name, the name of Krishna Deva Raya, will live on forever. Even death will have no power over that.
So, I absolutely loved reading this book and am now eager to read the second part. 🤩
King Krishna Deva Raya is touted to be one of the greatest kings of all time. The stories of his intelligence and valour are famous. This book, the first in the series, attempts to capture the magnificent life of the renowned king.
Krishna Deva Raya: The boy who would be king by Abhijeeth Hiliyana is a historical fiction focused on the glorious tale of the king of Vijayanagara. The book follows his years of adolescence and how he transitions from an ordinary boy into a chivalric king. It includes details of his life besides shedding light on the culture and traditions of South India.
This book brings together a variety of themes including politics, conspiracy, vengeance, and love. While describing the thrilling tale of the making of an emperor, it also takes his love life into account which goes on to play a significant role in his journey. Set in the times of 15th century, the story reminds us of our cultural heritage and the blood and gore that went behind our current times.
I believe it is always a good idea to go back to one’s history and take some lessons. Through Krishna’s life, one gets to learn about strategic warfare, hard work, dedication, family values, and the importance of love. It also evokes jingoism and allows one to reflect upon history as they look forward. As he discovers himself on the battlefield, Krishna rose to the echelons of success and repute.
Lucid writing coupled with a coherent narrative makes reading this book a breezy ride. I absolutely liked the author’s writing style which is both comprehensible and engaging. Moreover, it brings out lesser-known facts about the great king’s life which is wonderful to read and absorb. Anyone interested in reading up on history would enjoy this book.
I would certainly recommend it to readers for its amazing story and equally amazing writing.
There is no official ceremony held to declare the lion the king of forest. He himself become the king of forest by his own attributes and heroism. - Chanakya
The above lines best describes The Great Emperor of South India Krishnadevaraya, who ruled the kingdom of Vijayanagara at most important time. A saga of a fearless warrior and political genius who ruled with both brawn and brains.
I am overwhelmed to read this outstanding piece of work done by author Abhijeeth Hiliyana. The book showcases the life of krishna before he was throned as the Emperor Krishnadevaraya. The author had beautifully weaved the story where he had put forth the struggle and the difficult circumstances he went through before coming to the throne of Vijayanagara. The book sheds light on his early life where he had romantic attachment and he hardly cares for the other things in his life. But the vital role played by his efficient minister Appaji guided and reminded him of his duties towards the motherland and his people. The selfless contribution of Appaji carved out the hidden potential of krishna who later became The Great Emperor Krishnadevaraya. The last conversation between Krishna and his brother Vira made me emotional.
Being a lover of history, I always explore around the said genre because I believe our country is so rich historically and we get to learn so much from these stories. I was completely immersed and cherished the manner in which the story continued. From the cover page to the narrating style, everything is perfect and on point.
All in all, a very absorbing read which gives an insight into the life of The Great Would Be Emperor Krishnadevaraya.

This is a book which everyone should read to know about the glorifies of our Hindu Emperors . book cover is also beautiful and Krishna is holding sword riding horse. Language used here is lucid and i finished this book in 5 days. I loved this book and my ratings are 5️⃣ stars.
Considered to be one of the greatest rulers in the Indian history, there is hardly anyone amongst us who hasn’t heard about Krishnadevaraya.
A man who ruled the largest empire in our country after the decline of Delhi Sultante, Krishnadeva was an emperor especially known for his victories and conquests of lands in the Krishna-Tungabhadra basin.
However, regardless of how many facts that are already there out about him, there are still so many of the unknown facets from his life that have not been much discovered or talked about.
In this regard, ‘Krishna Deva Raya: The Boy Who Would Be King by author Abhijeeth Hiliyana is a good book to unfold the story of this fierce warrior and bring forth some unheard factuals.
Handling an empire and maintaining your position at the top is not an easy task, and Krishna realizes just how much of an effort this requires as he navigates through his ups and downs.
The author has managed to bring a lot of information about a great diplomat in one book that we as a readers can look upto, hence I am going to give this FIVE STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐

The entire plot of "The boy who would be King" is very intriguing. The story spread around 300 pages talks about suffering, love and all possible emotions one would feel in a battlefield. It gave an outlook of how the ancient times would have been. The narration was exquisite and the plot is well framed. Just look at the cover. It itself will give you goosebumps.
If you are a fan of historical novels pick this book up and have an interesting read.
The book revolves around the era of Krishna Deva Raya, the King of Vijayanagar in 1485. He struggles in war to fight with his Enemies on the battlefield fiercely to bring peace to his kingdom.
Inspired by his father's bravery, he has sharpened himself as an administrator who brings solitary peace to his kingdom. He fought with the enemies on the battlefield but his concern towards them after the war ends is something genuine I feel as a human being. His concern about the wounded horse of Uglu khan but backed because of Anna's rules is a heart-touching moment.
Krishna Deva Raya is a known character in our history but his bravery I have never read. The way of putting the bravery in the book is a tough task but the author has done a beautiful job in portraying the character. The love story of Chinna and Krishna is like the cherry on the cake. I just love the way the book is described. There is a second part of this series and I just read the blurb after I finished this one. And git excited and I am gonna read that one definitely.

I have always Krishna Deva Raya as he is one of the most famous kings in South India. He is part of the pop culture like movies and literature. I knew about his love for poems, his compositions, his court poets like Tenali Raman. This book gives me a deeper insight into the life of a visionary who took the vijayanagara empire to the pinnacles of success.
The author gives us a detailed description about the childhood, love life and the learnings of Krishnadeva Raya. We get an insight about his psyche, how he learnt the different techniques of warfare and administration.
His love and benevolence towards the his subjects, the statemanship and his vision and general awareness was astounding.
I loved the affection he had towards his wife Chinna Devi and that was refreshing to read in this historical fiction. A great read and looking forward to read part 2 of the book.
I recently finished reading "Sri Krishna Deva Raya" Part 1 by Abhijeet Hiliyana, and unfortunately, it fell short of expectations. The novel lacked depth, with too many loose ends and underdeveloped plotlines. The author's portrayal of historical figures felt inconsistent, and the writing style didn't immerse me in the world of 14th-15th century Karnataka.
The book's failure to deliver a compelling narrative, coupled with its historical inaccuracies and lack of attention to detail, makes it a difficult read. I wouldn't recommend it to fans of historical fiction or those interested in the history of Karnataka.
Key Issues:
- Loose ends and underdeveloped plotlines - Inconsistent character portrayals - Lack of historical depth and accuracy - Unengaging writing style
Overall, this book didn't meet my expectations, and I wouldn't suggest it to others.

I like these kind of books and I'm glad i read this one. The cover of the book is powerful in itself and i love the writing style of the author it's very gripping. Overall this was a fine book to read. Happy reading!
I really enjoy fantasy novels. I like being lost in the time of kings, queens, forming empires, and wars being fought. This book transported me to a similar front of warfare. The ideas of bravery and nationalism were skillfully portrayed in the book. The book, which takes place in the 1400s, discusses the Vijayanagara Empire and its brave monarch, Sri Krishnadevaraya. The author has amazing storytelling abilities. It's really remarkable how he kept us reading the book all the way through.
Most of the time, the narrative was gorgeous and took the listener back in time. The personas were all very well developed. a historical tale with a quick pace.
