From "a master storyteller"(Booklist (starred review) comes more magic, knitting, and love in the delightful follow-up to Casting Spells.
Knit shop owner and sorcerer's daughter Chloe Hobbs felt the Fates finally got it right when she met Luke MacKenzie. And no one could have convinced her otherwise-including the trolls, selkies, or spirits who also call Sugar Maple, Vermont, home. But then out of nowhere Luke's ex-wife suddenly shows up, claiming to see the spirit of their daughter, Steffie-a daughter Chloe knows nothing about.
Steffie's spirit is being held hostage by a certain Fae leader. And if Chloe weaves a spell to free her spirit, her nemesis will also be free-free to destroy her yarn shop and all of Sugar Maple. But if she doesn't, Steffie won't be the only one spending eternity in hell. Chloe'll be joining her, cursed with a broken heart.

Another great book in this series. Again, really a "mystery" here, other than solving problems and learning more about the towns history / Isadora's plan. This one was full of emotion and dark powers and romance. Poor Chloe has so much on her plate I can't imagine dealing with it all. There are some very big choices to be made in this book, about love, about fate, about choosing a town over a child, etc. It was really well done and easy to read. The characters are interesting and I'm looking forward to see more and maybe even learning more about them. I thought there was so way in heck this all works out and I can't wait to read more of this series.
Although Bretton's wit is just as apparent in this novel as it was in Casting Spells, she handles the delicate subject of a child's death with care and sensitivity. Anyone who has gone through anything similar will recognize this.
For the knitters and crocheters there is a special treat, a collection of knitting tips and a scarf crochet pattern for the beginning level. I might give that one a try.
And finally, in an author's note, Barbara Bretton pays tribute to her mother, the wonderful lady she misses so much and who taught her how to knit.
Every thing is finally working out for Chloe Hobbs, half sorceress half human and mayor of Sugar Maple, Vermont. That is until her lover’s ex turns up claiming to be haunted by her dead child in Laced With Magic by Barbara Bretton.
As well as being mayor of Sugar Maple, Chloe is the owner of a celebrated knitting shop. The shop is so popular that at times Chloe has difficulty keeping up with requests for yarn. Chloe sometimes wonders if its popularity is due to some kind of spell that has been cast over it. Yes Sugar Maple is inhabited by supernatural creatures. And after years of waiting, Chloe has finally been able to find her magical powers. She has also managed to keep the residents of the town safe by banishing Isadora, a power hungry fae.
There is pressure on Chloe to create a female heir to continue her line of witches dating back to the 17th century and thereby preserve the protective spell. Happily, Chloe is in love with Luke Mackenzie. Luke is the new police chief and he happens to be the only full human in the town.
The only full human that is until ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s ex wife, Karen, arrives in Sugar maple a state of distress. Now Luke hasn’t told Chloe everything about his past â€ and he said nothing about Karen. This adds its own complication, especially as Karen (who also knew nothing of Chloe) ends up staying with Chloe and Luke.
If this isn’t enough, Karen’s anxiety stems from her belief that she is receiving urgent phone calls from Steffie: Karen and ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s dead daughter. Little does Karen know but, in a place where seeing ghosts are an everyday event, Karen has either come to completely the wrong or exactly the right place!
As Chloe, Luke and Karen try to figure out their relationships, a dark power is emerging in Sugar Maple. Just as this force begins to influence the town, Chloe loses control of her magical ability (always a bit suspect). Chloe needs to recover her magical powers so that she can save her town and townsfolk. But can she do so whilst keeping together her relationship with Luke and at the same time resolving the issue with the spirit of ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s daughter, Steffie?
Surprisingly, Chloe and Karen find that they have at least one other thing in common â€ as well as loving Luke that is. They both have a passion for knitting. Karen thinks that she is in heaven when she walks through the doors of Sticks & Stones °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s yarn shop: where there is everything any knitter could want.
There is plenty of knitting chat and discussion in Laced With Magic, however this doesn’t detract from the story if you are not a knitter. The knitting element has little to do with the story unfortunately.
There are a collection of knitting thoughts from some prominent knitters and a pattern for a crochet scarf at the back of the book. Also at the end of this book is a very touching tribute from the author to her mother and her knitting customs.
I enjoy the setting for this series. A location where there is a magical underworld, if we were only able to discover it (much like the Harry Potter series) appeals to me. And I am a sucker for a story with a dreamy knitting store.
The cast of characters are the thing that really makes this tale stand out for me. I found myself feeling for the main characters. In fact I found that, if anything, their frailties as described endeared them to me. When they met dangers I found myself rooting for them even more.
Perhaps it is the use of the first person for the three point of view characters that drew me into the book. I found this approach intriguing as the characters sometimes needed re-evaluating when the points of view switched. I enjoyed each of these three viewpoints, although at times their voices were too similar so I had to remind myself whose thoughts I was reading.
I love °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s struggle between her human side and the control of sorceress. I really sympathised with Karen and her determination to find her lost child. ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s character is quite central to this story too; not only do we find out that he has an ex wife and child, but there are other issues that he hasn’t got to grips with yet. Chloe and ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s romance is portrayed realistically and is sometimes sizzling, sometimes not. Despite the understandable rough times, their love making is quite steamy at times (and this may be a bit more passionate than some readers would like).
The cast of secondary characters, from fae to werewolves and vampires carry out their everyday lives in Sugar Maple. My favourites are Lynette, who keeps forgetting that she has transformed into a canary and Midge a sort of dumpy vampire with a perm!
This series has an ethereal feel to it, which I found refreshing. If you haven’t read Casting Spells, you can still read this book and enjoy it just as much. The author has a talent that not many writers seem to have, of telling you what happened in a previous book without affecting the pacing of the current book.
There are some laughs too, as the characters find themselves in all sorts of pickles as they try dealing with magical mishaps. For example, at one point Chloe loses it and before she knows what she is doing, she shrinks Luke down to the size of a Ken doll!
The tale grabbed from the beginning and kept me gripped right to the cliff hanger at the end. The pathos is handled very skilfully as a parent’s grief over her departed child is not an easy subject. Laced With Magic was even more engrossing than the first in the series and I can’t wait to find out what happens in the next instalment.
Laced With Magic by Barbara Bretton is a light hearted New England fantasy tale with a delightful romance amongst the knitting community. It has thoroughly engaging characters and is full of suspense, tension and conflict. I am going to read the next book in the Sugar Maple series (Spun By Sorcery) soon and will review it for you here.
LACED WITH MAGIC by Barbara Bretton was a beautifully light tale of magic and romance. I’m not sure what I was expecting when I picked up LACED WITH MAGIC, but this book exceeded that. The story was fantastic, the suspense full and captivating, and to top it all off the romance was completely delicious. If you’re looking for a good Romance with a nice touch of magic, LACED WITH MAGIC is it.
Readers were first introduced to Chloe, part sorceress and knit shop owner, in Bretton’s first book, Casting Spells. Now, in LACED WITH MAGIC we find Chloe still managing her knit shop and her romantic relationship with the hunky Officer Luke. If only he weren’t a human, life would be so much easier! Finally accustomed to °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s fits of magic, Luke has managed to find a place for himself in the magical town of Sugar Maple. Many accept him, some tolerate him. Regardless of their feelings about Luke, all want him to hurry up and get Chloe pregnant already. °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s ancestors are the key to upholding the spell that protect Sugar Maple and if Chloe leaves the realm without providing a female heir to carry on the protection, Sugar Maple will be lost.
With pressure growing to protect the town, Chloe has a lot on her plate and really doesn’t need any more. Of course, right at that point we meet Karen, ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s ex-wife. Spouting stories of hearing her dead daughter’s voice on her cell phone and seeing her in the playground, Karen hunts Luke down and pleads for his help. Anyone that has experienced a new relationship will know that having the focus of the old relationship in close proximity usually leads to some form of drama. Chloe and Karen certainly don’t disappoint. While the three try to figure out the relationships among them, a darker force is gaining power in Sugar Maple. If Chloe can’t gain control of her powers and banish this force forever, Sugar Maple will surely fall.
Bretton wrote a really fantastic story. This isn’t necessarily an epic story or a dark thriller. I wouldn’t place it with Lord of the Rings although the magic and romance do come close at some points. LACED WITH MAGIC is different in that it isn’t very dark. The book has a very light, ethereal quality to it. Perhaps it’s the way Bretton instilled humor in the form of Chloe and her magical mishaps, or Karen and her fairly bratty attitude. Maybe it’s the way she gives all of her characters some sort of realistic quality. Midge the vampire is short and chubby with a perm that might make you cringe. Bretton creates a world where although it is highly magical and supernatural, we could actually visualize driving through on a quiet Sunday morning and being none the wiser.
The characters in LACED WITH MAGIC were just wonderful and really helped to make the book something special. LACED WITH MAGIC is riddled with suspense and tension and could easily have become dark and bogged down. Instead, the characters kept the feel of the book fairly upbeat and added life to the story. These are characters that I would love to know. Normally, a story is a story and although I may get a ton of enjoyment out of it, it’s still just a great story written by a talented author. In this case, I fell in love with Bretton’s characters. It’s obvious that Bretton puts a lot of love into her writing and developing her characters. From just having read LACED WITH MAGIC and experiencing Bretton’s storytelling, I would immediately and without question pick up any of Bretton’s other past or future works.
Finally, I love how Bretton instilled the book with knitting tidbits. Chloe owns the knit shop and is a voracious knitter so Bretton does throw quite a few knitting terms out there. Although I have only dabbled at knitting and crocheting myself, it’s obvious that Bretton knows her stuff. I would warn readers however, I had to look up some of the knitting terms that Bretton uses. If you don’t know what she’s talking about, it’s not really going to affect the story much so I wouldn’t let it detract you from giving the book a try.
Fair warning time: There are a few adult themes and adult scenes. Bretton doesn’t really describe too many body parts so I would give this a sensuality rating of 3.5.
LACED WITH MAGIC has to earn top marks. The story was wonderfully constructed and the characters made the whole thing lift up off the page. I think the best way for me to describe LACED WITH MAGIC would be to say that it is a stroke of sparkly, brilliantly colored paint on a black background. The story stands out and in a world of intense Paranormal Romances it brightens the field with its lighter nature.
Things are finally going right for Chloe Hobbs. Her latent sorceress powers have finally kicked in, she saved her town from being pulled beyond the mist, she banished the power-hungry Fae leader, Isadora, and best of all, she’s in love with Luke Mackenzie, the town’s chief of police and only resident full-blooded human. But °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s bubble of happiness is popped when ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s ex-wife, Karen, shows up in Sugar Maple, claiming the spirit of Steffie, their dead daughter, is in trouble. Despite wishing Karen a thousand miles away, not to mention the shock of learning Luke had a daughter, Chloe can’t leave Steffie’s spirit in danger. Turns out, °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s old nemesis, Isadora, is the one holding Steffie’s spirit hostage and will only release her if Chloe undoes her banishment. It’s up to Chloe to rescue Steffie’s spirit, save her town and her relationship with Luke before Isadora destroys all three.
Action, danger, and a surfeit of magic blend together as things take a dark turn in this sequel to Casting Spells. Laced with Magic is even more engrossing than its predecessor, though the joy and energy that came from the first book is markedly lessened by the desperate situation the characters are in. Chloe and Luke remain incredibly likeable as, to my surprise, was Karen. These three endeared themselves to me in part because of Barbara Bretton’s use of the first person. The story switches from each of their perspectives (clearly labeled, which I appreciate), giving me a more intimate inroad to their thoughts. Because of my attachment to these characters, I couldn’t put Laced with Magic down because I wanted to see everything work out for them.
I was delighted to return to the town of Sugar Maple once more in Laced with Magic. °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s store, Stick & Strings, continues to be a knitter’s dream, and the town itself a fascinating one. The other residents of Sugar Maple, from faeries to vampires, werewolves, and so forth remain interesting, but I am sad to report they are less likeable than in Casting Spells. Still, I was captivated by Laced with Magic and, given the cliffhanger Ms. Bretton ends the story with, am on the edge of my seat for the next Sugar Maple book.
Ever have the feeling that the fates finally got it right? That’s how I felt when I met Luke MacKenzie. And no one could have convinced me otherwise—not the trolls, selkies, or spirits who also call Sugar Maple, Vermont, home. But since I live in a town that thrives on secrets, why am I surprised that the man I love has a few of his own? Because out of nowhere his ex-wife has suddenly shown up, claiming to see the spirit of their daughter, Steffie—a daughter I knew nothing about. Now it seems Steffie’s spirit is being held hostage by a certain Fae leader. And if I weave a spell to free her, my nemesis will also be free—free to destroy my yarn shop, all of Sugar Maple, and everyone in it. But if I don’t, Steffie won’t be the only one spending eternity in hell. I’ll be joining her, cursed with a broken heart
This is book number two from Barbara Bretton’s Sugar Maple series. As with her first book of the series, Casting Spells, I found this book to be extremely well written. The plot is smooth and flows evenly and there is humor and conflict. To recap: Chloe Hobbs is part of a lineage that dates back to the founding of Sugar Maple, VT. Each generation is responsible for keeping the magic in this town a secret, which requires falling in love and then the eventual birth of a daughter. She is also a sorceress-in-training; and by in-training, I mean she hasn’t been able to channel her inner magic yet…or has she finally? After banishing Isadora to a place Chloe thought she wouldn’t be able to interfere with Sugar Maple anymore, Surprise!!! It seems that Luke has an ex-wife (that’s alive) and a daughter (who’s dead). Isadora continues to meddle with the town and is now using the spirit of a small child in order to procure the control over Sugar Maple and its citizens. Will Chloe be able to set Steffie’s spirit free without sacrificing herself, Luke, or Sugar Maple?
Welcome to Sugar Maple everyone. As long as Barbara continues the series, I’m here to stay.
Fiction is about making up a story but far too many spectacular, spooky titles, fizzle into debunked endings. Barbara Bretton has the gumption to bring on the paranormal! She is enormously funny but in no way that dims the vibrant ambiance of magic. At last, here is a superbly-written cast of characters that deals daily with the unseen realm. I enjoy the concepts of series in the vein of Madelyn Alt and Mary Stanton but mystical content was sparse. Barbara rewards our craving for etherealness. It rattles every page. Some sizzling love-making makes it clear that Barbara hails from “H²¹°ù±ô±ð±ç³Ü¾±²Ôâ€!
Keeping the town out of fairy control is an easy answer. But ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s ex-wife brings frightening evidence about a daughter they had: it appears her spirit is a hostage to the fairy leader. Emotional involvement soars past circumstances that were already enthralling. Also unusual is that ‘K²¹°ù±ð²Ôâ€ is extremely likeable. She proves a fierce, pivotal third heroine. Her narrative unfolds the story too.
We meet Chloe once again. Chloe still lives in Sugar Maple, Vermont, with her boyfriend Luke, whose contract is up soon which leads Chloe to wonder if he is going to stay or if he is going to move back to the big city. Another problem, magic is running amok in town. If that isn’t bad enough, ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s ex-wife comes into town with some secrets of her own. And these secrets are a doozey.
This book is an excellent second book in the series. It does not hit the sophomore slump that many books fall to. I could not put this book down, nor did I want to. ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s ex-wife starts off annoying enough and then you kind of start to fall in love with her (in her own way.) The town acts as crazy as ever, but it’s the perfection continuation of book one, mentioned here. There is another mystery which Chloe helps to solve once again, in part to the fact it involves Luke and his ex-wife. Chloe doesn’t want to help in part because it kills her (Luke kept a secret) but she does, and thank heavens she does because it involves a bad guy from the first book.
The thing is, as much as I mention the first book, you could easily read this book without reading the first book. It recaps it in a way you don’t even feel like you’re getting a recap, which is always lovely. Plus this book ends on a wicked cliffhanger, rivals those of the YA variety.
I love that Chloe embraces both sides of her background in this book, she is both human and a sorceress. She’s still learning her powers which provide some laugh out loud moments, like when Luke ends up the size of a Ken doll. Luke is amazing to me, willing to stand beside Chloe in the face of things he can’t even begin to understand. That’s true love. In a romance, the hero and heroine are most important to me, and I adore these two.
Their relationship does have some rough spots, which is to be expected given the circumstances. I thought the way they struggled through was realistic. The sparks aren’t always there, but they never abandon each other. They’re a couple that simply belong together, which makes me smile.
This one deals with magic a lot, between °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s growing powers, the town’s dilemna and the Fae leader’s goals. Having a human around complicates things. Luke knows the town’s secrets but his ex-wife doesn’t and the townspeople want to keep it that way, no matter what they need to do to accomplish that.
On a side note, one of my favorite characters from Casting Spells was back, causing mischief, but once again there to help Chloe when she needs it. I doubted we’d see him again, but thankfully I was wrong.
I’ll be looking forward to the next installment. I have to admit I’m still hoping for the happily ever after.
Book two in the Sugar Maple series is very good. The way the story is continued is really well done and makes sense with the original story and characters, but with a new story line and different challenges for Chloe and Luke to face.
Chloe's magic has finally come in, and she has won Luke, so she figures it's only a matter of time until the required daughter comes along to fulfill the prophecy and keep the town where it is.
But, of course, that would be too simple! Instead, the ex-wife Luke never mentioned shows up in town, telling him that Steffie, the daughter he ALSO never mentioned - and who died - has been calling for both of them to help her.
It turns out that Isadora, who's still banished but trying hard to come back to take the town through the mist, has captured Steffie's spirit and will only release her if Chloe releases Isadora from the banishment, which is really not a good idea.
The book is very fast-paced and exciting and the various supporting characters all choose sides in the Chloe versus Isadora battle, which makes for even more drama. The one thing you should be aware of if you read this one is that it does end in a cliff-hanger, so you'll want to be ready to have the third book handy once you finished this one. But it's a fun paranormal romance and a good read.
This was a good follow-up to Casting Spells. I enjoy it when authors use the same setting/town and characters to write multiple books and as always, Barbara Bretton is a master storyteller. The plot was good, but I felt like it was the same thing over and over again. Chloe must choose between between humans and magick creatures and the townspeople all distrust Luke. Sometimes that aspect felt a little slow. I also thought the townspeople were extra mean and nasty this time. They put so much pressure on Chloe and constantly reminded her how much of a failure they thought she was. The ending left us hanging and I will definitely read book three, but this one left me feeling a little disappointed.
This is the sequel to CASTING SPELLS and has three point-of-view characters, all of them still sounding so similar I had to page back on occasion to see who was talking.
I liked the characters and the magic, but knitting had even less to do with the magic in this book, even though two of the point-of-view characters were knitters.
While some of the conflict in the story was satisfactorily resolved, the ending was a bit of a cliff-hanger, so there will need to be a follow-up. I hope the author figures out how to let the main character's knitting skills play a part in her magic in the next installment.
3.5 stars, good and despite it having been several years since I read the first one I didn't feel terribly lost. My only complaint is that we were left with a pretty decent cliff hanger.
Plot concept is good and what is keeping me reading but holy hell this thing needs a good editor and some formatting and spell check too. It could be really good with the right editor
Another delightful bit of knitting fluff. I recommend this to knitters and only to knitters. If you don't knit, you're not going to find my favorite quotes relevant to anything.
"Suddenly I had everything I had ever dreamed about: magick and love and enough yarn to last ten lifetimes."
"Believe me, you know you love a guy if you're willing to knit a pair of socks for his size-twelve feet." My husband wears 12.5 EEEE. I am not effing around. This is love, people.
"Hadn't a lovely selkie couple from the Orkney Islands passed through town last month? Or maybe she was a wayward knitter who had been attracted by the lights and the promise of some lace-weight mohair." I'm a moth.
"I'd knitted my boyfriend a sweater and we'd lived to love another day. If that wasn't magick, I didn't know what was." Knitting your SO a sweater is like getting their name tattooed on you. You better be damn sure about that relationship.
"Not that anyone ever actually applauded when I showed them how to turn a heel or pick up the gusset stitches, but I wouldn't have been at all surprised if one day they did. Sock knitting is that great." Seriously though.
Last bit of knitting magick: "Your yarn never tangles, your sleeves always turn out the same length, and you always get gauge."
Bonus quote: 'Or maybe she had some weird kind of knitting superpowers, paranormal crafting skills straight out of a Harry Potter -- She stopped, needle poised above the piece of knitted fabric she was using to demonstrate her technique. "Actually I've never read Harry Potter." You could hear my breath leave my body in one loud whoosh. "What did you say?"' Ha ha ha. I took this out of context. But that's basically my reaction every time too.
Chloe and Luke make sparks fly when they are together, literally and Chloe couldn’t be happier that is until ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s ex-wife shows up claiming that their deceased daughter is contacting her from beyond. The town is up in arms now that another human has come to town and at least half the town feels that it would be better to move beyond the mist where they would be safe from humans forever.Ìý
Chloe has a lot to learn about her magick, love and life in general but stays true to herself throughout the book. She is a little naïve when it comes to love, but hopes that Luke will stay with her no matter what. Luke doesn’t seem to know what he wants except he does know he loves Chloe, but he isn’t sure if that is enough. °ä³ó±ô´Ç±ð’s magick is finally working but she doesn’t spend enough time devoted to learning how it works. She is always running around putting out fires. Be ready for lots of surprises you won’t see coming in the next saga of Sugar Maple.Ìý
Chloe is doing well managing her knit shop. She is also enjoying Luke. Luke is the only human living in Sugar Maple. The residents can handle the tourists because they spend money and leave. Luke is semi-permanent. Sugar Maple is a little town whose ancestors fled the witch hunting of Salem. Many detest Luke for being human while others tolerate him because he keeps the authorities out of everyone's hair. Suddenly, there is another human arrives much to everyone's dismay. It is Luke's Ex who claims their dead daughter is haunting her. Chloe did not even know there WAS a daughter. Chloe, her paranormal friends need to keep their secrets and get the Ex gone ASAP. Except, they soon realize the little girl is trapped by a very evil entity and they need to help her before it is too late. The book has spells, magic, battles and was very enjoyable
Time is running out for Chloe and Luke (and by extension, Sugar Maple), and now it is complicated by the discovery of secrets: that Luke was once married, had a daughter, and is divorced. Secrets will out, and Karen, his ex-wife, has come to Sugar Maple with a tale of her daughter repeatedly calling her on her cellphone. Steffie's spirit is being held captive by Isadora, whom Chloe had banished (or so she thought).
Will Chloe be able to help Steffie, Karen, and Luke? Will Sugar Maple survive with two, count 'em, two, humans? Will Isadora return from her banishment, or will the sorcerer-in-training be able to save the day?
The second in the series (and my apologies for my slow reading of them) is full of magic and mayhem, and even has some answers to questions that weren't answered in the first one.
Enjoying this series that blends paranormal elements with romance.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Second book in the Sugar Maple series. The story arc continues in this book. Chloe and ³¢³Ü°ì±ð’s relationship is tested when his ex-wife shows up in Sugar Maple needing his help. The town freaks out because another human has arrived. Many townspeople are siding with Isadora and Isadora is wreaking havoc from within her banishment. Fun times.
The universe created here continues to be interesting though Chloe is a bit too whiny in this book for my tastes. There’s lots of action in this book and a few hold-your-breath scenes. The book ends on a huge cliffhanger that evidently segues into book three.
A story with a different twist. Based on a “human woman who is half witch but has no magic. The town of sugar maple is depending on her to keep them safe from outsiders. Her ancestor cast the original spell that keeps the town from being invaded by outsiders (although they rely on tourists to bring in money, just a little contradictory). There are quite a few twists in this story but it just adds to the interest. A fun read.
The yikes: - didn't get sucked into the story - took a break between the first two books and sometimes lost track of characters, would have loved some sort of reference page
the yays: - luke and chole are cute together and are sweet - enjoyed switching into each characters perspectives - interesting plot - knitting - cozy town
overall would recommend especially if you're a fan of knitting!
