James was born on Christmas Eve 1965 and, having dabbled in writing at school, first took to it seriously while at university. A short story of his won a college competition. The prize was £15, and it had cost £18 to get the story professionally typed. This taught him a hard but necessary lesson in the harsh economic realities of a literary career.
Straight after graduating from Oxford with a degree in English Literature, James set himself the goal of getting a novel written and sold within two years. In the event, it took two months. The Hope was completed in six weeks and accepted by Macmillan a fortnight later. The seed for the idea for the novel � a world in microcosm on an ocean liner � was planted during a cross-Channel ferry journey.
James blew his modest advance for The Hope on a round-the-world trip which took him to, among other places, Thailand. His experiences there, particularly what he witnessed of the sex industry in Bangkok, provided much of the inspiration for The Foreigners.
Escardy Gap was co-written with Pete Crowther over a period of a year and a half, the two authors playing a game of creative tag, each completing a section in turn and leaving the other to carry the story on. The result has proved a cult favourite, and was voted by readers of SFX one of the top fifty SF/Fantasy novels of all time.
Days, a satire on consumerism, was shortlisted for the 1998 Arthur C. Clarke Award (losing to Mary Doria Russell’s The Sparrow). The book’s genesis most probably lies in the many visits James used to make as a child to the Oxford Street department store owned by his grandfather. It was written over a period of nine months while James was living in the north-west suburbs of Chicago.
Subsequent works have all been published to great acclaim. These include Untied Kingdom, Worldstorm, Provender Gleed, The Age Of Ra and the back-to-back double-novella Gig. James has also written for children. Wings, a short novel for reluctant readers, was short-listed for several awards, while his fantasy series for teens, The Clouded World, written under the pseudonym Jay Amory, has been translated into 7 other languages so far. A five-book series for reluctant readers, The 5 Lords Of Pain, is appearing at two-monthly intervals throughout 2010.
He also reviews fiction for the Financial Times, specialising in the Young Adult, children’s, science fiction, fantasy, horror and graphic novel genres.
Currently James resides in Eastbourne on the Sussex Coast, having moved there in August 2007 with his wife Lou, sons Monty and Theo, and cat Ozzy. He has a terrific view of the sea from his study window, which he doesn’t sit staring out at all day when he should be working. Honest.

Τολμώ να πω ότι στην ενήλικη ζωή μου έχω διαβάσει αρκετές εκατοντάδες βιβλίων, όμως δεν έτυχε να διαβάσω κάποιο από τα κλασικά βιβλία του Arthur Conan Doyle με πρωταγωνιστή τον Σερλοκ Χολμς. Έτσι, το βιβλίο που έγραψε ο κ. James Lovegrove: "Sherlock Holmes- Ο λαβύρινθος του θανάτου" είναι στην ουσία η πρώτη μου επαφή με το δίδυμο Σέρλοκ Χολμς και Γουάτσον, και μπορώ να πω ότι το ευχαριστήθηκα πραγματικά.
Καταρχήν μου άρεσε πολύ ο τρόπος που γράφει ο συγγραφέας. Η γραφή του είναι απλή και με ρυθμό που εναλλάσσεται από γρήγορο σε αργό όπως απαιτεί η πλοκή κάθε φορά. Οι περιγραφές είναι πολύ καλές και ευτυχώς δηλαδή, αφού η ιστορία απαιτεί τη σωστή απόδοση των χώρων όπου διαδραματίζεται και αν δεν υπήρχε η κατάλληλη περιγραφή δεν θα μπορούσα να καταλάβω μεγάλο μέρος της πλοκής.
Βρήκα πολύ ωραία και την ιστορία που μας διηγήθηκε. Μετέφερε με πολύ ωραίο, σωστό και καθόλου εκνευριστικό τρόπο αποσπάσματα της αρχαίας ελληνικής μυθολογίας στο παρόν. Γενικά όλη η έμπνευση της ομάδας των Ηλυσσίων ήταν ωραία και κατά τη γνώμη μου αποδόθηκε σωστά.
Τέλος, μου άρεσε ο τρόπος που ο συγγραφέας απέδωσε τη σχέση των δύο αντρών. Δεν υποτίμησε κανέναν αλλά αντίθετα τόνισε τα καλά στοιχεία του καθενός και τον τρόπο που λειτουργούν σαν ομάδα οι δυο τους, αφήνοντας όμως ταυτόχρονα και περιθώρια για ατομική δράση.
Σίγουρα θα διαβάσω κι άλλα βιβλία της σειράς όταν μεταφραστούν, ίσως να διαβάσω και κάποια από την κλασική σειρά, όχι για να κάνω σύγκριση ανάμεσα στους δύο συγγραφείς αλλά επειδή έχω την περιέργεια να δω πώς παρουσίασε τις ιστορίες του Σέρλοκ Χολμς ο σερ Arthur Conan Doyle.

Letters from a female view point here we see Holmes like Hound only in the shadows taking the view that he often did that females are the week sex.Which was Doyle of course who had that view been typical Doctor in Victorian times who care nothing for women today it would be called MCP but then it was normal.
I am glade that Lovegrove has not as some SH modern books have done change the view so the book is modern.This very Victorian Doyle not twenty first century view of 1895 but the 1895 in Doyle 's style

" Ο λαβύρινθος του θανάτου"
Η πρώτη μου επαφή, με τον δόκτορα Γουάτσον & τον Σέρλοκ Χολμς θα έλεγα ότι ήταν μία περίεργη εμπειρία.
Περίεργη, γιατί θα έπρεπε να είχα μεριμνήσει, να γίνει αυτή η γνωριμία πολύ παλιότερα, διότι έχοντας διαβάσει μία διαφορετική αστυνομική λογοτεχνία, ο χαρακτήρας του και ιδιοσυγκρασία του, μου φάνηκαν λίγο ως πολύ υπερβολικά.
Φυσικά αυτή ήταν η πρώτη εντύπωση.
Συνεχίζοντας την ανάγνωση του βιβλίου, γνώριζα όλο και περισσότερο τους δύο αυτούς παγκόσμιους και αγαπημένους ήρωες, με αυτό τον τρόπο, τους κατανόησα, ευχαριστήθηκα την παρέα τους, και θέλω να τους γνωρίσω περισσότερο, μέσα από τις περιπέτειες τους.
Ο λαβύρινθος του θανάτου είναι ένα βιβλίο, παλιάς κοπής. Αποτυπώνει την ατμόσφαιρα του βικτωριανού Λονδίνου.
Το πιο αξιόλογο σε αυτό το βιβλίο, είναι η παραστατικότητα, που έχει δοθεί στη θεματολογία της ιστορίας, που αφηγείται ο δόκτωρ Γουάτσον.
Έχει αγωνία, δράση και μυστήριο, που είναι τοποθετημένα σε μια εποχή, διαφορετική.
Ο ηθικός συμπεριφορικός κώδικας των ντετέκτιβ αλλά και των ηρώων μεταφέρει στον αναγνώστη, στην ιπποσύνη που δεν έχουμε συνηθίσει οι αναγνώστες, που διαβάζουν σύγχρονη αστυνομική λογοτεχνία.
Κάθε φορά, που διαβάζω ένα βιβλίο, θέλω μέσα από αυτό να λαμβάνω και γνώση πέρα από τις χαλαρές στιγμές, που θα μου προσφέρει. Αυτό το βιβλίο ήταν to the point και στα δύο.
Η ιστορία, καταπιάνεται με την Ελλάδα. Πιο συγκεκριμένα με την αρχαιότητα και με τον κόσμο και την ουσία της φίλοσοφιας σε εκείνη την εποχή. Μύθους και αλήθειες.
Η ιστορία γύρω, από το κεντρικό άξονα του αστυνομικού, έχει τα στοιχεία, που αναφέρω παραπάνω, στοιχεία του Ολύμπου.
Ο Σέρλοκ Χολμς και ο Δ. Γουάτσον θα ζήσουν μία περιπέτεια, που έχει ως σκοπό, να δείξει στον αναγνώστη, τον τρόπο ζωής, που ακόμα και σήμερα γίνεται παράδειγμα προς μίμηση, των Ελλήνων.
Τη σκληραγώγηση, τη δύναμη, την τιμωρία, και τη λατρεία όχι μόνο προς τους θεούς του Ολύμπου, αλλά προς την Ελλάδα και αυτό, που έχει να δώσει η Ελλάδα σαν χώρα και σαν λαός στους άλλους κόσμους.
Όλα ξεκίνησαν από μία εξαφάνιση, και αν κοιτάξουμε και πίσω από τις λέξεις, θα μπορούσαμε κάλλιστα να δούμε σε κάθε διαφορετική μορφή εξουσίας τα επτά θανάσιμα αμαρτήματα με έναν εξαίρετο ιδιοφυές έξυπνο τρόπο.
Ο αναγνώστης, μέσα από την αφήγηση, την εξιστόρηση και τη ροή της ιστορίας, μαθαίνει ξανά από την αρχή την ιστορία του.
Γενικότερα σαν λαός, πιστεύω ότι δεν έχουμε δώσει τη σωστή βάση, στην αρχαιολογία, και στους θεούς του Ολύμπου όπου κατά κάποιον τρόπο είναι οι πρόγονοι μας.
Μέσα από αυτό το βιβλίο, κατάλαβα ότι δεν είναι απλά μύθοι, καθώς παρατήρησα, ότι η δική τους κοινωνική & πολιτική αρχή έχει στοιχεία της δικής μας κοινωνίας.
Ο δικός μας κόσμος πηγάζει μέσα από το δικό τους. Όχι το σωστό σήμερα, γιατί έχουμε μία νέα τάξη πραγμάτων, αλλά στο σύνολό της ζωής μας.
Ο συγγραφέας, μαζί με αυτό το παγκοσμίως αγαπημένο δίδυμο, φέρνει στην επιφάνεια την εφευρετικότητα, την εξυπνάδα, την πολυμάθεια, τη σκληραγώγηση και τη δύναμη του λαού μας με ένα ιδιόμορφο, διαδοχικό και καταιγιστικό τρόπο.
Ο λαβύρινθος του θανάτου, είναι ένα βιβλίο,που θα μπορούσε να έχει αναδυθεί από τους αιώνες. Είναι μαγικός ο τρόπος σκέψης, πράξης και ευρηματικότητας, που χαρακτηρίζει τους δύο φίλους.
Και σε αυτό το βιβλίο ο αναγνώστης, που έρχεται πρώτη φορά σε επαφή με αυτό το δίδυμο, θα κατανοήσει απόλυτα την αγάπη του αναγνωστικού κοινού για τους παγκοσμίως αγαπημένους ήρωες.
Το μόνο αρνητικό κατά τη δική μου κρίση, είναι η πολυλογία, που υπάρχει σε κάποια σημεία. Όμως, είναι μέρος της ιστορίας και χαρακτηριστικό των δύο ηρώων. Ιδιαίτερα του Δόκτωρ Γουάτσον.
Ανυπομονώ για την επόμενη περιπέτεια τους. Και ας έχει και λίγο έρωτα παραπάνω, γιατί πρέπει να αποκατασταθεί ο Κύριος Γουάτσον. 🙂

Η ιστορία ξεκινάει καλά, μου άρεσε αρκετά στις πρώτες 200+ σελίδες, είχε τα εχέγγυα για κάτι πολύ καλό, αλλά από ένα σημείο και μετά ξεφεύγει αρκετά από το πρότυπο του Σέρλοκ Χολμς και γίνεται το κάστρο του Τακέσι!
Θεωρώ ότι θα έπρεπε να είναι εκατό σελίδες μικρότερο και η όλη ιστορία με την δοκιμασία του λαβύρινθου είτε να απουσίαζε και να υπήρχε κάποια άλλη λύση/κατάληξη, είτε να ήταν μικρότερη σε έκταση.
Μου άρεσε η γραφή η οποία μάλιστα θεωρώ ότι φέρνει λίγο στη γραφή του Σερ Ντόυλ.
Εν κατακλείδι, ενώ μου άρεσε πολύ στην αρχή, στο τέλος περνάει ίσα ίσα τη βάση για τα προσωπικά μου γούστα πάνω στο θέμα του αγαπημένου Σέρλοκ! Θεωρώ τα βιβλία του Horowitz με τον Χολμς καλύτερα, αν και φυσικά κανένας μέχρι στιγμής δεν μπορεί να φτάσει τον Σερ Ντόυλ!
Παρόλα αυτά, διαβάζεται ευχάριστα και δεν μπορώ να πω ότι δεν το διασκέδασα, απλά δεν το θεωρώ αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα Σέρλοκ Χολμς. Αν ήταν άλλος ο ήρωας, η βαθμολογία μου θα ήταν υψηλότερη.

Θεωρώ ότι θα έπρεπε να είναι εκατό σελίδες μικρότερο και η όλη ιστορία με την δοκιμασία του λαβύρινθου είτε να απουσίαζε και να υπήρχε κάποια άλλη λύση/κατάληξη, είτε να ήταν μικρότερη σε έκταση.
Μου άρεσε η γραφή η οποία μάλιστα θεωρώ ότι φέρνει λίγο στη γραφή του Σερ Ντόυλ.
Εν κατακλείδι, ενώ μου άρεσε πολύ στην αρχή, στο τέλος περνάει ίσα ίσα τη βάση για τα προσωπικά μου γούστα πάνω στο θέμα του αγαπημένου Σέρλοκ! Θεωρώ τα βιβλία του Horowitz με τον Χολμς καλύτερα, αν και φυσικά κανένας μέχρι στιγμής δεν μπορεί να φτάσει τον Σερ Ντόυλ!
Παρόλα αυτά, διαβάζεται ευχάριστα και δεν μπορώ να πω ότι δεν το διασκέδασα, απλά δεν το θεωρώ αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα Σέρλοκ Χολμς. Αν ήταν άλλος ο ήρωας, η βαθμολογία μου θα ήταν υψηλότερη.

Συμπαθητική προσπάθεια συνέχισης του μύθου του Σερλοκ Χολμς που διαβάζεται ευχάριστα χωρίς να είναι κάτι το ιδιαίτερο. Δεν μπήκε στο πνεύμα όσο άλλοι, όπως ο. Anthony Horowitz στο The House of Silk.

This was my third Holmes-pastiche from James Lovegrove after Gods Of War and The Thinking Machine two books which had several strong individual parts but these did not come together satisfyingly to form a great novel. So, let’s see whether The Labyrinth Of Death is more successful in this regard!
Hannah Woolfson, a young woman of independent spirit and great intelligence has disappeared. The trail leads Holmes and Watson to a bizarre cult-like group obsessed with ancient Greek culture and mythology. Are they just a harmless bunch of nutters? Or have they taken the more bloodthirsty rituals and myths too seriously?
The first few chapters move rather slowly. But once Holmes and Watson arrive at the headquarters of the mysterious sect things start to get exciting.
Lovegrove’s strength lies in his great ability to bring these classic characters to life. These are the Holmes and Watson we know and love, behaving like they would in the original stories. There is also some wonderfully witty banter between the two friends as in the following passages:
“I know you would prefer me to represent your investigations as if they were treatises, Holmes, with a premise, an explanation and a conclusion. But what would be the point in that? Who would read them bar a handful of academics and intellectual snobs?�
“They would at least have the virtue of serious and lasting scientific value. Thanks to you, I strongly doubt that my achievements will be heralded in the future. Whereas a more sober, factual record of my deeds would live on indefinitely in scholarly libraries, adding to the sum total of mankind’s wisdom and benefiting the student of crime for generations to come.�
He was being ironic. At least, I like to think he was.
“Holmes,� I said, “it is not up to me, or to you, what of us lives on past our deaths and what does not. A higher power determines that.�
“Gǻ?�
“PDzٱٲ.�
My companion grinned. “Then let us hope that posterity is kind to me and you. Perhaps you are right. Perhaps a century from now or more, my renown will persist through your jottings. Who knows? Other authors might even pick up where you leave off and invent chronicles of their own about me. Since you fictionalise my doings, Watson, who is to say I will not in the end come to be considered completely fictitious, a figment of the imagination, and therefore air game for pasticheurs and homageurs and similar such mountebanks bereft of originality?�
He seemed tickled by the prospect.
“An afterlife as the hero of literary works by diverse hands�, he mused. “A very specific Valhalla. My own private Elysium. Ha!�
The story reads like a mixture between Donna Tartt's The Secret History and an Indiana Jones adventure. Lovegrove creates some atmospheric scenes and presents the reader with enough shifty characters to keep us guessing who is friend or foe. Alas, just like its predecessors The Labyrinth Of Death stumbles at the finish line. The identity of the culprit is anything but a huge surprise, and once the mystery plot has been solved the entire last act is taken up by our two protagonists trapped in the titular labyrinth having to escape several death traps. This part feels almost like an overlong Sudoku-puzzle or the ending of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade stretched out over 60 minutes. Admittedly Lovegrove is very good at setting up these riddles which are all based in ancient Greek mythology. But once we arrive at this part of the story the big bad has already been unmasked and his rather mundane motives have been explained. The result is a lack of tension. It's a shame, really, because there were parts where I thought that this would end up being a winner. Ultimately though it's just a solid but also slightly underwhelming example of a Holmes pastiche.

Νομίζω πως δεν υπάρχει άνθρωπος που να μην γνωρίζει τον Σέρλοκ Χολμς, έναν από τους πλέον χαρισματικούς ντετέκτιβ όλων των εποχών, μα και μια απ' τις πιο εμβληματικές φιγούρες της λογοτεχνικής ιστορίας, δημιούργημα του μεγάλου αστυνομικού συγγραφέα Arthur Conan Doyle, που όχι μόνο αποτέλεσε μεγάλη έμπνευση για το είδος, αλλά ενέπνευσε πολλούς δημιουργούς και καλλιτέχνες σε κάθε μορφή Τέχνης τα χρόνια που πέρασαν, από την πρώτη του εμφάνιση μέχρι και σήμερα. Ακόμα κι αν δεν έχει διαβάσει κανείς βιβλία με τις ιστορίες και τις περιπέτειές του, σίγουρα τον έχει δει ενσαρκωμένο, κάποια στιγμή, στη μικρή ή στη μεγάλη οθόνη, οπότε, λίγο πολύ, έχει μια εικόνα για τι μιλάμε. Κι αν πράγματι δεν έχει διαβάσει κάποιο κλασσικό βιβλίο με ήρωα τον ίδιο, του δίνεται η δυνατότητα να τον γνωρίσει σήμερα, μέσα από μια άλλη ματιά.
Ο λόγος για τη σειρά "Sherlock Holmes" του James Lovegrove, ενός εξαιρετικά ταλαντούχου και πολυγραφότατου συγγραφέα, που έχει στο ενεργητικό του περισσότερα από πενήντα βιβλία για παιδιά και ενήλικες. Ενός συγγραφέα που τόλμησε κάτι που πολύ λίγοι θα τολμούσαν στη θέση του. Να πάρει έναν θρύλο και να αναβιώσει τις περιπέτειές του, βάζοντας την υπογραφή του κάτω από αυτές. Κακά τα ψέματα, το να παίρνει κανείς μια κλασσική ιδέα ή ιστορία, πόσο μάλλον έναν κλασσικό και τόσο δημοφιλή ήρωα, και να του δίνει από την αρχή σάρκα και οστά, δεν είναι εύκολη υπόθεση, ενώ το ρίσκο που έγκειται η προσπάθεια αυτή είναι τρομερά υψηλό. Το έχουμε δει να συμβαίνει πολλάκις, ειδικά τα τελευταία χρόνια, όπου η έμπνευση και η δημιουργικότητα φαντάζουν να περνάνε μια κάποια κρίση, αλλά σε καμία περίπτωση δεν μπορούμε να πούμε πως τα αποτελέσματα είναι πάντοτε ιδανικά. Στην προκειμένη, όμως, συμβαίνει ακριβώς αυτό.
Ο Lovegrove μάς μεταφέρει στο Λονδίνο του 19ου αιώνα, που τόσο πολύ αγαπάμε, και αναβιώνει με μοναδική συγγραφική και αφηγηματική δεξιοτεχνία μια εποχή που αποτελεί το ιδανικό φόντο για μια ιστορία όπως η συγκεκριμένη -και όχι μόνο. Ο τρόπος γραφής είναι απλός και άμεσος, χωρίς περιττές φλυαρίες, που θα μπορούσαν πολύ εύκολα ν' αποδυναμώνουν την ένταση της αφήγησης, μα και αποφεύγοντας άσκοπες περιγραφές, χωρίς αυτό να σημαίνει πως δεν δίνει τις απαραίτητες πληροφορίες ώστε να έχουμε μια ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα του τι συμβαίνει, που συμβαίνει και κυρίως, για ποιον λόγο συμβαίνει. Αντίθετα, μας βάζει για τα καλά στο κλίμα της εποχής, ζωντανεύει κάθε γωνιά της τότε Αγγλίας, με τα όποια μυστικά μπορεί να κρύβονται σε κάθε μία από αυτές, δημιουργώντας μας μια σχεδόν κινηματογραφική αίσθηση, ενόσω διαβάζουμε, που μας επιτρέπει όχι απλά να φανταζόμαστε, αλλά κυριολεκτικά να "βλέπουμε" αυτά που "βλέπει και εκείνος.
Παράλληλα, με την ιστορία του μοιρασμένη σε τρεις διαφορετικές ενότητες, μας επιτρέπει να διεισδύσουμε στα άδυτα αυτής και να καταλάβουμε τον πυρήνα της ύπαρξής της και τους σκοπούς αυτής, τους οποίους και προσπαθεί να πραγματώσει μέχρι και την τελευταία στιγμή. Αυτό έχει ως αποτέλεσμα να έχουμε μια αφήγηση που άλλες φορές διαθέτει αργό ρυθμό, άλλες πιο έντονο, μα σε κάθε περίπτωση, αυτόν ακριβώς που απαιτείται τη δεδομένη στιγμή, είτε προσφέροντάς μας τον χρόνο που απαιτείται προκειμένου να απορροφήσουμε και να επεξεργαστούμε τις πληροφορίες και τα στοιχεία που λαμβάνουμε, ώστε να συνδέσουμε όλα τα κομμάτια του παζλ ένα προς ένα χωρίς να μας διαφύγει το παραμικρό, είτε προσφέροντάς μας τις ανατροπές εκείνες που τρέχουν σε τόσο γρήγορους ρυθμούς που ανεβάζουν την ένταση και την αδρεναλίνη μας στα ύψη, χωρίς να γνωρίζουμε ποιος θα κερδίσει, τελικά, αφού φτάνοντας την τελική αναμέτρηση έχουμε μια σύγκρουση χαρακτήρων που δεν υστερούν ο ένας του άλλου, αλλά που θα κερδίσει εκείνος που θα αποδειχθεί ο πιο ψύχραιμος, λογικά και συναισθηματικά.
Και μιας και αναφερθήκαμε στους χαρακτήρες, είναι η ιδανική στιγμή να πούμε πως ο Lovegrove φέρνει εκ νέου στην επιφάνεια έναν Σέρλοκ που σαφέστατα έχει επιρροές από τον ίδιο, αλλά που δεν χάνει σε καμία περίπτωση την κλασσική, αποφθεγματική του υπόσταση, ούτε την ιδιαίτερη, ακόμα και αλλοπρόσαλλη κάποιες στιγμές, προσωπικότητά του, που τόσο μοναδική έχει υπάρξει μέσα στο πέρασμα του χρόνου και που εύκολα θα μπορούσε να γίνει κανείς θύμα της -ή και θύτης της καταστροφής της. Την ίδια στιγμή, όμως, ο συγγραφέας επιλέγει να δώσει λίγο περισσότερο χώρο και στον Γουάτσον, που ναι μεν είναι εξίσου αγαπημένος χαρακτήρας, αλλά σαφέστατα πιο αδικημένος, όχι τόσο επειδή η προσωπικότητα του Χολμς τον "καταπίνει", αλλά γιατί δεν του δίνεται πάντα η δυνατότητα να ξετυλίξει σε όλο τους το εύρος τα ταλέντα και την προσωπική του δυναμική, πράγμα που εδώ συμβαίνει και που βοηθάει, εκτός των άλλων, στο να δούμε και τη σχέση των δύο μέσα από ένα διαφορετικό πρίσμα.
Κλείνοντας, δεν γίνεται να μην αναφερθούμε στον αρχαιοελληνικό πυρήνα της ιστορίας, που όχι μόνο είναι εξαιρετικά έξυπνος, μα αποδεικνύει και πόσο μεγάλος λάτρης της μυθολογίας και της Ιστορία μας είναι ο Lovegrove, όπως και οι περισσότεροι Άγγλοι, μα και το πόσο πολύ έχει μελετήσει όλα τα προηγούμενα. Και όλα αυτά, φέρνοντάς τα στο παρόν μιας εποχής όπου τα παλιό με το νέο συγκρούονται. Στη δύση μιας εποχής και στην ανατολή μιας άλλης, εκεί που κάποιοι παλεύουν για την αλλαγή, ενώ κάποιοι άλλη για την επιστροφή στα παλιά απ' τα οποία προερχόμαστε, και που τόσο συμβολικά αποτυπώνονται, ακόμα και μέσα από την σύγκριση δύο γυναικείων φιγούρων της εποχής, στα μάτια και στην καρδιά των οποίων αντικατοπτρίζονται όλα αυτά. Εν κατακλείδι, "Ο λαβύρινθος του θανάτου" δεν είναι μόνο ένα βιβλίο έκπληξη, μα και ένα βιβλίο που αξίζει να διαβαστεί.

Έχουν περάσει πάρα πολλά χρόνια από την πρώτη μου επαφή με τον Σερλοκ Χολμς , τον πιο διάσημο φανταστικό ντετέκτιβ-σύμβουλο, που με τον βοηθό του Δρ. Τζον Γουάτσον έχουν εμπλακεί σε δεκάδες υποθέσεις μυστηρίου. Θυμάμαι να κάθομαι και να διαβάζω τις ιστορίες του Άρθουρ Κόναν Ντουλ και να ταξιδεύω μέσα από την απαράμιλλη αντιληπτική ικανότητα του Σέρλοκ στους δρόμους του Λονδίνου! Φαντάζομαι αγαπημένοι μου αναγνώστες ότι και εσείς είχατε τις ίδιες εμπειρίες και αν όχι�. τότε μπορείτε να ξεκινήσετε με το βιβλίο Ο Λαβύρινθος του Θανάτου του Lovegrove.
Ο Σερλοκ Χόλμς δεν είναι μόνο ένας μεγάλος ντετέκτιβ , αλλά και ένας αποφθεγματικός ήρωας, γιατί συνηθίζει να εκφράζεται σαρδόνια για τις ανθρώπινες καταστάσεις .Επίσης με μία φυσική δεξιοτεχνία και με ένα περίπλοκο τρόπο, λύνει και τις πιο εξωπραγματικές καταστάσεις, που οποιαδήποτε δυσπιστία και να δημιουργείται στον αναγνώστη υποχωρεί αμέσως. Θα μπορούσα να πω ότι έχει μία διακριτική ικανότητα διαχείρισης προβλημάτων. Ο επιστήθιος φίλος του Γουάτσον είναι πάντα δίπλα του και μέσα από τα μάτια του βλέπουμε και εμείς τον αγαπημένο μας ήρωα! Ο Lovegrove έχει αποδώσει ρεαλιστικά όλες τις φιγούρες του έργου και σε παρασέρνει μαζί του, στους μυθικούς διαδρόμους του μυαλού του.
Όλοι γνωρίζουμε ότι στην Αγγλία λατρεύουν την αρχαία Ελλάδα και την γλώσσα μας. Τα αρχαία ελληνικά διδάσκονται στα σχολεία τους από τις πρώτες τάξεις……� για παιδιά 7 ετών και άνω � και εδώ στο συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο υπάρχει αφθονία της Ελληνικής Μυθολογίας. Αν την γνωρίζεις καλά θα σου φανεί πολύ έξυπνο πως καταφέρνει ο συγγραφέας και πλέκει την ιστορία , αν όχι τότε σου δίνεται η ευκαιρία να ξεσκονίσεις τις γνώσεις σου. Αυτό που μπορώ να σου πω με σιγουριά είναι : ότι αν η αρχαία τραγωδία έχει να μας διδάξει κάτι δυνατό, είναι ότι τιμωρεί τους δολοφόνους καθώς η αλήθεια μισεί τις αναβολές!
Το βιβλίο σου το προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα, γιατί θα κάνεις ένα ταξίδι στον χρόνο ,σε μία εποχή που λατρεύω την Βικτοριανή, η οποία διασταυρώνεται με τους Ελληνικούς μύθους και θα καταλάβεις το ταλέντο του συγγραφέα! Να σας ενημερώσω ότι έχει γράψει και άλλα βιβλία για τον Sherlock !

The good: The Labyrinth of Death is neatly ensconced in the Canon (for those not in the know, the Canon consists of the original Sherlock Holmes stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.) In this novel Holmes is forced to solve a series of elaborate puzzles just to stay alive. That part of the book is more James Bond than Holmes, but it is a lot of fun to read. The bad: Holmes makes a severe error in judgment that I think is uncharacteristic of him. (I won't tell you what it is but you can read the back of the book and figure it out.) The ugly: Dr. Watson is truly a dunderhead in this one, a characterization I do not agree with. Please note that my overall rating of this book is still a solid four stars-the good certainly outweighs everything else and this is an enjoyable literary outing.

Όλους εμάς, που γνωρίζουμε σχεδόν απ' έξω τις περιπέτειες του αγαπημένου Χολμς, πιστεύω πως ενώ στην αρχή ενθουσιαστήκαμε που θα διαβάζαμε μια συνέχεια των περιπετειών του, στην πορεία μας άφησε με μια ελαφριά απογοήτευση και μια αίσθηση του ανικανοποίητου.
Δεν υστερεί σε γραφή ή ευρηματικότητα, όμως δεν μπόρεσε να με πείσει ότι είναι ο πρωτότυπος χαρακτήρας και δεν τον αντιγράφει απλώς...

Ο Τζέιμς Λαβγκροουβ συνεχίζει τις περιπέτειες του Σέρλοκ Χολμς. Άξιος συνεχιστής του Σερ Άρθουρ Κόναν Ντόιλ. Έτσι απολαμβανουμε άλλη μια περιπέτεια με τον Χολμς και τον πιστό φίλο του, Δρ. Γουάτσον.

Really more like three and a half stars, but I rounded up because, y'know, it's Lovegrove, and also because that third act was crackerjack.
This is my fifth pastiche by Lovegrove, and it serves to remind me why he's among my favorite of pastiche writers: he writes a bloody good adventure story. There's always a mystery to his Holmes pastiches, don't get me wrong -- but I appreciate that he takes to heart that most of the Conan Doyle stories were given titles that begin with "The Adventure."
The duo of Holmes and Watson are rounded out to a trio in this one, with the addition of She's operating under the nickname Shirley Holbrook, which she chose as a tribute to Holmes himself -- she's a fan, you see, and quite a capable one of that. Indeed, when the second chunk of the book took place from her point of view (through letters she wrote to Holmes, updating him on her progress), I mostly enjoyed it. I'm not big on letters and flashbacks in stories, because it always seems to slow the pacing down -- but I liked "Shirley" enough here that the letters kept me engaged.
Besides -- damn, it was a great third act. The first two-thirds kept me frantically turning pages, but is just kind of everything I want in a pastiche.
If Watson is a little more Monk-ish than his canon counterpart, his clear loyalty to his friends assured me this is *our* Watson -- and I always enjoy Lovegrove's Holmes, without any traces of the slightly-too-acerbic characterization that was in one or two of his earliest reads.
Plus: Greek myths references! I do love Greek mythology.
So. Not my favorite of Lovegrove's pastiches -- but it kept me smiling during a difficult week, and it certainly earns a fourth star for that. Here's to Shirley Holbrook!

I have had the good fortune of reading a few Holmes pastiches, and this one holds its own compared to others. Lovegrove is no stranger to Sherlock, as evidenced by the number of titles he has devoted to the detective and his partner-in-solving-crime, Watson.
As I cruised through the detailed chapters of "Labyrinth", I was impressed by Lovegrove's ability to craft his tales in the style of Sir Arthur. I commend all of today's authors who work to expand the telling of classic Holmes adventures. This title is no exception, with proper development of the characters who interact with Holmes and Watson, and exciting suspense in the latter third of the book.
I'm already on the trail of other Lovegrove pastiches. Fortunately, they're sufficiently discoverable such that I won't need to engage the great detective that resides at 221b Baker Street.

The problem with this book is that it is not really a Sherlock Holmes story. Most of it happens through the letters of one of the protagonists in the adventure, an educated and spirited young woman called Hannah. This put me off, as I thought I was going to read a Holmes story. Also, the character of Hannah is unconvincing and not too interesting. Watson’s crazy love for her is also entirely uninteresting and unconvincing. No chemistry between them; plus he feels all this unending love and devotion just by seeing a picture of Hannah. Please. Although Holmes is depicted faithfully and lively, this is not his story, but the entirely boring Hannah’s. I will never read a book from Lovegrove again.

Started out well, but gradually got more disappointing as Watson kept being handed the Idiot Ball. I'm rating this three stars instead of two purely because the mystery was still fairly good and I did get to see Holmes and Watson in the Labyrinth like I'd hoped from the start. Definitely would not reread, though.

I have always enjoyed the tales of Sherlock Holmes and own a couple of different editions written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle but this was my first time picking up one of the adventures written by James Lovegrove, and I am really glad that I did.
In this adventure, Holmes and Watson are on the hunt for a missing woman, Miss Hannah Woolfson, who has vanished into thin air. Her father is distraught and hopes that his daughter has not come to some grisly end. But it is not long before Holmes uncovers the fact that Miss Woolfson has gone into the countryside in the hopes of saving her friend, Sophia, who appears to have gotten herself mixed up in some sort of cult. Soon Watson and Holmes find themselves in dangerous territory, with a group who are obsessed with Greek Mythology, but luckily for them, they are perfectly adept at piecing puzzles together, and they even have help on the inside...
When I was reading THE LABYRINTH OF DEATH by James Lovegrove I fell completely under his spell and felt like I was transported to 1895 with its unique flair, language, and charm. This book is most certainly a must-read for Sherlock Holmes fans with echoes to the originals while also creating a fresh and creative storyline. I loved the characters, especially Hannah who is so independent and unafraid to show the world her intelligence. The story is well-paced with plenty of danger, mystery, and action throughout to keep your eyes glued to the page. This may be the first time that I have read this series but it most certainly won't be my last. SHERLOCK HOLMES - THE LABYRINTH OF DEATH by James Lovegrove is a compelling and exciting riddle that you simply must unravel. Happy reading!!

Sherlock Holmes's new client is a high court judge whose free spirited daughter, Hannah has gone missing. Holmes and Watson discover that Hannah was herself on the trail of her missing friend Sophie, who was besotted with a young man who recruited her into a group known as the Elysians, a sect run by Sir Philip Buchanan who is obsessed by the Ancient Greeks and hopes for a new order of elite citizens.
Hannah has joined the Elysians to try and find out what happened to Sophie and agrees to be Sherlock's spy but how long will it be before she is discovered or betrayed? And will Sherlock and Watson be able to save her?

You know what, it was a good enough pew pew for five stars. I love how Lovegrove enriches the canon with silly inside jokes and turns Watson into an actual character � my favourite addition is his growing list of animal phobias. In this particular story, there was also a � finally � interesting version of a crime and adventure based on Greek mythology � also fitting into my recent obsession with weird deadly cults. Stay sexy and call your dad if you’re in a cult xxx

Έχουν χυθεί άπειροι τόνοι μελανιού για να γραφτούν οι περιπέτειες του διάσημου Σέρλοκ Χόλμς καί άλλες τόσες ώρες κινηματογραφικών γυρισμάτων. Κι όμως,κάθε φορά καταφέρνει αυτός ο ήρωας να μας συναρπάζει. Δεν είχε τύχει να διαβάσω βιβλίο με τις ιστορίες του μέχρι τώρα,προσπαθούσα όμως να παρακολουθώ ταινίες που να βασίζονται σε αυτές.
Πρίν δύο μέρες έφτασε στα χέρια μου το βιβλίο ''Sherlock Holmes,Ο ΛΑΒΥΡΙΝΘΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΘΑΝΑΤΟΥ'' από τον συγγραφέα James Lovegrove καί έμεινα άκρως ικανοποιημένη από την ανάγνωσή του.
Εύλογα,θα σκεφτείτε,ποια είναι η διαφορά ανάμεσα σε αυτό καί τα άλλα βιβλία που αναφέρονται στον συγκεκριμένο πρωταγωνιστή καί στις υποθέσεις που αναλαμβάνει να εξιχνιάσει,με αποτέλεσμα να είναι τόσο ''απαραίτητο'' να το αναζητήσετε να το διαβάσετε. Η διαφορά,λοιπόν,έγκειται στο γεγονός πως μέσα στην πλοκή του βιβλίου,δεν βλέπουμε μόνο την δράση του Χόλμς,αλλά παράλληλα μας δίνεται η ευκαιρία να μάθουμε πτυχές της ζωής του αγαπημένου του συνεργάτη Δρ. Γουάτσον καί να τον γνωρίσουμε καλύτερα.
Σε αυτό το βιβλίο οι πρωταγωνιστές πλέον είναι δύο,ο Σέρλοκ Χόλμς καί ο Δρ. Γουάτσον,οι οποίοι παίζουν μεγάλο ρόλο τόσο στην επίλυση του προβλήματος,όσο καί στην εξέλιξη της ιστορίας. Βέβαια,το βιβλίο κοσμείται κι από άλλους ήρωες οι οποίοι με την σειρά τους συμπληρώνουν το πάζλ καί μας δίνουν ολόκληρη την εικόνα. Καθένας θα διαδραματίσει έναν ρόλο/σκοπό καίριο για την ομαλή ροή της ιστορίας.
Επιτρέψτε μου να πώ ότι μου άρεσε ιδιαίτερα ο τρόπος που ήταν τοποθετημένος ο ρόλος της γυναίκας. Μας δόθηκε με δύο ''μορφές'',μία πιο συντηρητική καί αρμόζουσα στα πρέπει εκείνης της εποχής καί μία δεύτερη πιο μοντέρνα καί προοδευτική. Ίσως αυτό να έγινε εσκεμμένα από τον συγγραφέα,επειδή η εποχή στην οποία αναφέρεται είναι σημαδιακή ως προς την αναγνώριση των δικαιωμάτων της γυναίκας.
Το βιβλίο το χαρακτηρίζει η έντονη δράση,η ευφυής πλοκή,η αγωνία,το σασπένς καί αυτό το πέπλο μυστηρίου που επιβάλλεται σε ένα βιβλίο με κεντρικό χαρακτήρα τον Σέρλοκ Χόλμς. Αυτά όλα στο σύνολο τους γίνονται ακόμα πιο έντονα χάρη στην γραφή του συγγραφέα,ο οποίος καταφέρνει να μας ''αιχμαλωτίσει'' από τις πρώτες κιόλας σελίδες του βιβλίου.
Είπα γραφή καί δεν είναι σωστό να μην αναφερθώ καί σε αυτήν. Η γραφή είναι πολύ στρωτή χωρίς περιττές επαναλήψεις. Επιπλέον,ο χωρισμός του βιβλίου σε τρία μέρη,αποτελούμενα από μικρά καί περιεκτικά κεφάλαια,βοηθάει να έχουμε στα χέρια μας ένα ευανάγνωστο,ενδιαφέρον καί καθόλου κουραστικό βιβλίο. Εγώ,δεν θα το αρνηθώ,κατά την διάρκεια της ανάγνωσής του ένιωσα λες καί κάθε κεφάλαιο ''ζωντάνευε'' καί έβλεπα μπροστά μου μία σκηνή κινηματογραφικής ταινίας,στην οποία ήμουν κι εγώ μία αφανής ηρωϊδα.
Εν κατακλείδι,είναι από εκείνα τα βιβλία που αξίζουν τον χρόνο καί την προσοχή σας. Είμαι πεποισμένη πως θα σας αρέσει στο ίδιο βαθμό που άρεσε κι εμένα.

A Cult obsessed with ancient Greece...
Hannah Woolfson has disappeared. Her father, Sir Osbert Woolfson has come to 221B to hire Holmes to find his missing daughter. It is discovered that she was in close contact with Miss Sophia Tompkins. Miss Tompkins had become involved with a sort of cult involving education and fitness training after the example of ancient Greece.
Upon tracing Miss Tompkins, Holmes discovers Miss Woolfson as a member of the cult of Elysians, under the false name of Shirley Holbrook. The cult is led by Sir Philip Buchanan and is located at his estate of Charfrome Old Place. Miss Tompkins is nowhere to be found.
The Elysians train in classical Greek writing, theology, and rituals. There is a huge ceremony that takes place on the full moon. The Delphic Ceremony involves animal sacrifice, apparent passion by the Gods, and the revelation of the two people who will graduate.
The graduates are chosen by a seemingly possessed Sir Philip but are actually chosen in advance by the “elders� which include the ancient scholar Dr. Archibald Pentecost and a young rake named Edwin Fairbrother. Upon graduation, there is one more hurdle. Sir Philip is very much in love with ancient Greece and his favorite Greek hero is Daedalus, who built the Labyrinth of the Minotaur for King Minos. The Labyrinth lies underground beneath Charfrome Old Place�
In this tale, we see more of Watson as a person because Holmes has ordered it to be so. Watson has a new love interest in Miss Hannah and is furious with Holmes for allowing her to continue undercover work inside the cult. Watson is angry, but Sir Osbert is apoplectic! He even threatens Holmes in no uncertain terms to no avail. Holmes will not tell Sir Osbert where his daughter is�
This is a tremendous story! We have the Elysian Cult, the ex-military Guards, the possibly mad Sir Philip, the creepy but friendly Dr. Pentecost, the woman chasing Edwin Fairbrother, and the secrets of surviving the deadly labyrinth� This is a perfect storm of quality Holmes story-telling! I thought the challenges of the Labyrinth were excellently plotted, along with the clues and methods of solving the Labyrinth. The villains are cunning, the girl is tough, and Holmes and Watson must strive to survive against all odds! My hat is off to you, Mr. Lovegrove!

Hannah Woolfson has disappeared. Her father, Sir Osbert Woolfson has come to 221B to hire Holmes to find his missing daughter. It is discovered that she was in close contact with Miss Sophia Tompkins. Miss Tompkins had become involved with a sort of cult involving education and fitness training after the example of ancient Greece.
Upon tracing Miss Tompkins, Holmes discovers Miss Woolfson as a member of the cult of Elysians, under the false name of Shirley Holbrook. The cult is led by Sir Philip Buchanan and is located at his estate of Charfrome Old Place. Miss Tompkins is nowhere to be found.
The Elysians train in classical Greek writing, theology, and rituals. There is a huge ceremony that takes place on the full moon. The Delphic Ceremony involves animal sacrifice, apparent passion by the Gods, and the revelation of the two people who will graduate.
The graduates are chosen by a seemingly possessed Sir Philip but are actually chosen in advance by the “elders� which include the ancient scholar Dr. Archibald Pentecost and a young rake named Edwin Fairbrother. Upon graduation, there is one more hurdle. Sir Philip is very much in love with ancient Greece and his favorite Greek hero is Daedalus, who built the Labyrinth of the Minotaur for King Minos. The Labyrinth lies underground beneath Charfrome Old Place�
In this tale, we see more of Watson as a person because Holmes has ordered it to be so. Watson has a new love interest in Miss Hannah and is furious with Holmes for allowing her to continue undercover work inside the cult. Watson is angry, but Sir Osbert is apoplectic! He even threatens Holmes in no uncertain terms to no avail. Holmes will not tell Sir Osbert where his daughter is�
This is a tremendous story! We have the Elysian Cult, the ex-military Guards, the possibly mad Sir Philip, the creepy but friendly Dr. Pentecost, the woman chasing Edwin Fairbrother, and the secrets of surviving the deadly labyrinth� This is a perfect storm of quality Holmes story-telling! I thought the challenges of the Labyrinth were excellently plotted, along with the clues and methods of solving the Labyrinth. The villains are cunning, the girl is tough, and Holmes and Watson must strive to survive against all odds! My hat is off to you, Mr. Lovegrove!

Very verbose. Not sure if it's an accurate pastiche, but I am le shrug. The story itself was pretty good, and it did have that Sherlockian ability to pick out obscure details to solve the mystery.

A fantastic Sherlock Holmes adventure
In 1895, detective Sherlock Holmes and his faithful companion, Dr Watson, are called upon by a high court judge who needs their help to locate his missing daughter, Hannah. Upon investigating, Holmes quickly discovers that Hannah has in fact left her father by choice, in order to investigate her friend Sophia's recent disappearance. Following her trail leads the detective to a strange Ancient Greece-obsessed cult who call themselves the Elysians, of which Sophia had recently become a member prior to vanishing. It transpires that Hannah has managed to join the secretive group under a fake name ('Shirley Holbrook' in honour of Holmes himself) to seek out the fate of her friend. Once Holmes and Watson make contact with her, she agrees to work with them to try and establish what has happened to Sophia. However, none of them realises that the seemingly harmless Elysians may have a dark side and as she becomes more involved with them, Hannah may be putting herself in grave danger.
This was an extremely imaginative and enjoyable mystery story that was packed with high-tension action, shocking twists and exasperating cliffhangers. Written in the first person from the perspective of Watson, the narrative was both easy to read and gave a lot of insight into his thoughts and personality, which added emotional depth to the story. Whilst the characters of Holmes and Watson will be familiar to most readers from other interpretations of the Sherlock Holmes novels (the modern-day BBC adaptation being my sole exposure to the detective duo), the author does an excellent job of rendering their individual personalities in a way that is both faithful to the characters we know and befitting to the time period. The character of Hannah - a feisty, independent and intelligent girl living in a world where women are expected to be meek and submissive - could easily have become a bit cliched but the author made it work and I found all the protagonists likeable and all the potential villains suitably suspicious.
The Ancient Greek theme of the story (with multiple references to some of the many Greek myths and legends) was one of my favourite parts of the book. It added an extra layer of intrigue to an already exciting tale and the myths themselves - sometimes bizarre, sometimes gruesome and unfailingly fantastical - are always fun to read about. The author masterfully creates a building sense of danger and unease as Holmes and Watson learn more about the Elysians, their beliefs and practices and the whole group has a very creepy feel to it that comes through excellently in the writing.
My one criticism of this book would be that a few of the characters existed solely to be red herrings and served no other real purpose in the plot - however, this is probably unavoidable in mystery stories and the author still manages to make these characters fairly multi-dimensional. The big reveal of the person behind Sophia's disappearance was also not entirely unexpected, but the author kept up the excitement and suspense regardless and the last few chapters were so filled with tension and action that the book became almost impossible to put down. The conclusion was satisfying and perfectly rounded off an excellent adventure.
Overall, I really enjoyed this story and would definitely be interested in reading more by this author. Whilst I have regrettably not yet read the original Sherlock Holmes novels, this author has certainly done a brilliant job of creating a story using Arthur Conan Doyle's beloved characters and I would highly recommend it to all.

Έχουν χυθεί άπειροι τόνοι μελανιού για να γραφτούν οι περιπέτειες του διάσημου Σέρλοκ Χόλμς καί άλλες τόσες ώρες κινηματογραφικών γυρισμάτων. Κι όμως,κάθε φορά καταφέρνει αυτός ο ήρωας να μας συναρπάζει. Δεν είχε τύχει να διαβάσω βιβλίο με τις ιστορίες του μέχρι τώρα,προσπαθούσα όμως να παρακολουθώ ταινίες που να βασίζονται σε αυτές.
Πρίν δύο μέρες έφτασε στα χέρια μου το βιβλίο ''Sherlock Holmes,Ο ΛΑΒΥΡΙΝΘΟΣ ΤΟΥ ΘΑΝΑΤΟΥ'' από τον συγγραφέα James Lovegrove καί έμεινα άκρως ικανοποιημένη από την ανάγνωσή του.
Εύλογα,θα σκεφτείτε,ποια είναι η διαφορά ανάμεσα σε αυτό καί τα άλλα βιβλία που αναφέρονται στον συγκεκριμένο πρωταγωνιστή καί στις υποθέσεις που αναλαμβάνει να εξιχνιάσει,μ�� αποτέλεσμα να είναι τόσο ''απαραίτητο'' να το αναζητήσετε να το διαβάσετε. Η διαφορά,λοιπόν,έγκειται στο γεγονός πως μέσα στην πλοκή του βιβλίου,δεν βλέπουμε μόνο την δράση του Χόλμς,αλλά παράλληλα μας δίνεται η ευκαιρία να μάθουμε πτυχές της ζωής του αγαπημένου του συνεργάτη Δρ. Γουάτσον καί να τον γνωρίσουμε καλύτερα.
Σε αυτό το βιβλίο οι πρωταγωνιστές πλέον είναι δύο,ο Σέρλοκ Χόλμς καί ο Δρ. Γουάτσον,οι οποίοι παίζουν μεγάλο ρόλο τόσο στην επίλυση του προβλήματος,όσο καί στην εξέλιξη της ιστορίας. Βέβαια,το βιβλίο κοσμείται κι από άλλους ήρωες οι οποίοι με την σειρά τους συμπληρώνουν το πάζλ καί μας δίνουν ολόκληρη την εικόνα. Καθένας θα διαδραματίσει έναν ρόλο/σκοπό καίριο για την ομαλή ροή της ιστορίας.
Επιτρέψτε μου να πώ ότι μου άρεσε ιδιαίτερα ο τρόπος που ήταν τοποθετημένος ο ρόλος της γυναίκας. Μας δόθηκε με δύο ''μορφές'',μία πιο συντηρητική καί αρμόζουσα στα πρέπει εκείνης της εποχής καί μία δεύτερη πιο μοντέρνα καί προοδευτική. Ίσως αυτό να έγινε εσκεμμένα από τον συγγραφέα,επειδή η εποχή στην οποία αναφέρεται είναι σημαδιακή ως προς την αναγνώριση των δικαιωμάτων της γυναίκας.
Το βιβλίο το χαρακτηρίζει η έντονη δράση,η ευφυής πλοκή,η αγωνία,το σασπένς καί αυτό το πέπλο μυστηρίου που επιβάλλεται σε ένα βιβλίο με κεντρικό χαρακτήρα τον Σέρλοκ Χόλμς. Αυτά όλα στο σύνολο τους γίνονται ακόμα πιο έντονα χάρη στην γραφή του συγγραφέα,ο οποίος καταφέρνει να μας ''αιχμαλωτίσει'' από τις πρώτες κιόλας σελίδες του βιβλίου.
Είπα γραφή καί δεν είναι σωστό να μην αναφερθώ καί σε αυτήν. Η γραφή είναι πολύ στρωτή χωρίς περιττές επαναλήψεις. Επιπλέον,ο χωρισμός του βιβλίου σε τρία μέρη,αποτελούμενα από μικρά καί περιεκτικά κεφάλαια,βοηθάει να έχουμε στα χέρια μας ένα ευανάγνωστο,ενδιαφέρον καί καθόλου κουραστικό βιβλίο. Εγώ,δεν θα το αρνηθώ,κατά την διάρκεια της ανάγνωσής του ένιωσα λες καί κάθε κεφάλαιο ''ζωντάνευε'' καί έβλεπα μπροστά μου μία σκηνή κινηματογραφικής ταινίας,στην οποία ήμουν κι εγώ μία αφανής ηρωϊδα.
Εν κατακλείδι,είναι από εκείνα τα βιβλία που αξίζουν τον χρόνο καί την προσοχή σας. Είμαι πεποισμένη πως θα σας αρέσει στο ίδιο βαθμό που άρεσε κι εμένα.
Καλές σας αναγνώσεις!
Υ.Γ. Λάτρεψα την αναφορά στην αρχαία Ελλάδα καί σε αυτούς τους υπέροχους μύθους που μας έχουν μεταλαμπαδευτεί καί παραμένουν αναλλοίωτοι κι διαχρονικοί στο πέρασμα των χρόνων. Κρατήστε το! Είναι άκρως σημαντικό καί ταιριαστό με την υπόθεση του βιβλίου.

The Labyrinth of Death just proving once again that any Sherlock Holmes novel is a good novel. I was somewhat worried that the story wouldn't be able to live up to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's standards simply because he's the original author and it would be a difficult quest for anyone to follow in his footsteps. However, the story was as close to the original as it could be while still representing James Lovegrove's style of writing. As you would expect an easy but very enjoyable book that gets you binge reading in order to play your own Sherlock Holmes.
Overall, I recommend reading 'The Labyrinth of Death' if you enjoy somewhat old-english language, the original Sherlock Holmes series, the ongoing relationship ups and downs between Mr Holmes and Dr Watson, a thrilling riddle and the hunt for the truth by playing detective. I've "inhaled" this book within three days, because of it's thrilling, captivating story line making it one of those books you can't put down. Even though I've gone through it quite quickly partly due to the easy writing that is not to say it is plain or underwhelming but rather the opposite. I especially liked the way the first-person narrative was written from Dr Watson's point of view giving it a compelling tone and the impression as if the reader is part of the investigation.
Especially likable was the side plot of Hannah representing an emancipated young woman who doesn't shy away from taking matters into her own hand in an era where such aspirations weren't the norm or tolerated by most men. I'd definitely re-read this one as I firmly believe there are so many more gist that can be found on second reading and give it a permanent space in my bookshelf. Conclusion: Get on it, if you haven't already!

Σε όλο το βιβλίο πλανάται ένα ωραίο μυστήριο που ο συγγραφέας το ξετυλίγει με μαεστρία μέσα από την αφήγηση του δρ Γουάτσον. Σε πολλά σημεία είχε δράση και αγωνία και δεν με έκανε να βαρεθώ λεπτό.
Μια αρκετά αξιόλογη ιστορία του Lovegrove που έφερε πίσω με σεβασμό το αγαπημένο μας δίδυμο.

Set in 1895 "The Labyrinth of Death" tells the tale of two missing women and a quasi-religious sect obsessed with Ancient Greek myths and rituals.
There is just so much to like about this book. My first and major thought is "What is the relationship between Holmes and Watson like?" In this book, as in Mr. Lovegrove's other books, the friendship is strong and well-balanced.
The story is absorbing, interesting, and, at times, ventures into Indiana Jones territory. In fact I could easily see this book being made into a Robert Downey Jr/Jude Law 'Sherlock Holmes' movie.
Two other things stood out to me. The use of the Dorset dialect is superb, giving a real sense of place to the story. The second one is the character of Hannah Woolfson. In Hannah, Mr. Lovegrove has created a really strong female character who plays a real role in the story. This is one woman who is not simply there as window dressing.
All in all, this book is an excellent read. I highly recommend it.

I have been on a Sherlock Holmes pastiche spree and enjoyed the three previous books by Lovegrove. He really is able to capture the feel of the time and the titular characters don't feel like they were written by someone in the present times.
The reason for a grudging 3 star rating here is that the novel failed to maintain my interest after the first 40% or so. Most of the action from this point onwards is narrated through letters written to Holmes and Watson. The identity of the antagonist is quite easy to guess and the last 30% or so I totally skipped because it felt like reading an adventure novel rather than a mystery as Holmes and Watson were solving riddles and finding their way through mazes to survive. Like someone has already said in their review on this platform, it gave more of Indian Jones vibes than Sherlock Holmes. I would perhaps have given the book 2 stars of it were not for the first 30-40% that really drew me in and intrigued me enough to plough on.

A decent enough addition to the James Lovegrove Holmes canon. This one tried some things which I haven't seen much in other Holmes stories. It's an experiment which I think for the most part was a bit underwhelming.
The inclusion of a cult and the detailing of how people get roped into and brainwashed by it was very interesting. So is the addition of a third protagonist in the form of Hannah, whose story within a story within a story was engaging. However, other parts were slow and not particularly interesting. Like the overly-detailed environment of the cult compound. As well as the titular deadly labyrinth.
I was glad to have an increased focus on Watson, who is my favorite Holmes character. However I was upset that he didn't get to shine in the moments where it counted, still repeatedly outflanked by Holmes.
Overall a decent but not stellar Holmes story.
