I've been spending a lot of time this year trying to develop ways to build multimodal LARA documents automatically out of public domain internet resources. In principle, as Not told me a while ago, it should be easy. For many classic works of literature, everything you need is already there: the original text, a good English translation, and a high-quality audiobook. You just need to pull them apart and then put the pieces back together again so that the text, audio and translations line up. Surely there can't be much to it?
Not's intuition was spot on, though the details have taken a while to work out and still need considerable tidying up. Basically, my recipe goes like this. You start with the audio and cut it into pieces at silences using the tool. You then take the pieces of audio and send them for processing by . This is far from 100% accurate, but it's good enough that you can write a script which aligns the speech recognition results against the text of the book and matches them quite reliably. Next, you take the source text and the translation, and send them for processing at the site; this cuts the two texts into roughly sentence-length chunks in a way which matches corresponding passages.
The problem is that the two alignments, source/audio and source/target, are not consistent with each other, since silences and sentence-breaks are not at all the same thing. In general, a sentence contains many silences comparable in length to the ones you get at periods. However, the aligments agree well enough that you can in practice take the places where they do agree and use those to create a consistent alignment. Most often, this means that a sentence found by YouAlign corresponds to several silence-delimited audio segments, though sometimes you need more than one YouAlign segment for it to work. For each combined segment, you stick togther all the relevant audio chunks and all the relevant translation chunks, and you're there. There is slightly more to it than the above, but basically it is indeed quite simple: it works because the core resources, Google Cloud Speech to Text and YouAlign, are very good, and you just have to find a way to exploit that power.
Proust's Combray is my first full-scale test of the idea. The original French text and the Scott Moncrieff translation were both downloaded from Gutenberg; the audio, about 8 hours and beautifully recorded by Monique Vincens, comes from . The resulting LARA version is posted , view in Chrome or Firefox. You can use the audio controls to play audio a page at a time or a sentence at a time. Clicking on a pencil icon shows a translation of the previous sentence on the right; clicking on a word shows a concordance of places where that word occurs in the text.
We are writing a paper about this work, due at the end of the month. If you have any feedback, in particular including suggestions for what texts to do next or ideas about how one might use resources like LARA Combray in practice, it will be much appreciated!

We have now submitted our paper. In the course of writing it, I went through four texts I'd created using the alignment method, listening to each piece of audio, checking it against the text and translation that the aligner had matched to it, and correcting where it was wrong. This kind of annotation work is common in language technology projects, and in nearly all cases it's painfully dull. But not here! I was amazed to find how much I enjoyed reading Combray in this new way, and how much more I got out of it as I listened to the French audio while flicking my eyes back and forward between the pieces of French text and English translation, which were neatly lined up for me.
There were two things in particular that stood out. First, it's possible to read a good deal more quickly. Proust is a notoriously demanding author; when reading in normal text form I usually feel I've reached my limit after at most 20-25 pages, and can no longer maintain the concentration needed to disentangle the longer sentences. Here, I was supported by the audio and the English translation, and I could read the whole book in two or three days. This exposed all sorts of connections I hadn't noticed before. Second, listening to Monique Vincens reading aloud made me properly aware of how funny Proust is; his irony is often so subtle that I hadn't noticed it, but she does a wonderful job of conveying the humour.
All in all, I felt I was appreciating the book at a different level. I will soon start putting together a LARA version of A l'ombre des jeunes filles en fleurs.

I sincerely enjoyed all of Stéphane Heuet's adaptations of La Recherche into graphic novel format. Combray covers the first half of Du Côté de Chez Swann and is wonderfully illustrated and very faithful to the original text. The only downside is that he didn't finish the entire Recherche!

Çok tatlı bir çizgi romanla geldim. Marcel Proust’un Swannların Tarafı romanının 1.bölüm uyarlaması.

Ben çok keyif aldım. Serinin devamını da alacağım mutlaka.
Romanlarını okuduktan sonra okumanın daha keyifli olduğunu düşünüyorum. Sonuçta bu bir uyarlama, biraz özeti gibi ve Proust’un o cümlelerinin hissiyatının çok çok azı var. Benim için güzel bir tazeleme oldu. Tavsiye ederim.

تا اینجا همین جلد اول را خواندها� اما باید بگویم که به راستی خواندنی و لذتبخ� است تا حدی که از خواندن خود اثر چندان کم ندارد. هر که رمان در جستجو را خوانده باشد میدان� بیش از آن که ماجرا و داستانی در ان مهم باشد تک تک جملات و توصیفات و رفت و برگشتها� ذهنی و زمانی و درونکاویه� و دیگرکاویها� داستان و از همه مهمت� شاید جهان داستان است که آن را به اثری این اندازه به یادماندنی و مهم بدل کرده است. همه اینه� به راحتی معنایش این است که اقتباسی از این اثر آن هم در قالب کمیک استریپ،� دور از ذهنتری� کار ممکن باید باشد. با این همه باید اذعان کرد اقتباس استفان اوئه از در جستجو، توصیفات زیبا، تصاویر داستان، رفت و برگشتها� ذهنی و زمانی و درونکاویه� و از همه مهمت� جهان اثر را به راستی منتقل کرده و ستودنی است.
ترجمه اثر هم به راستی پاکیزه است و باید بابت انتخاب این اثر و انتشارش از کاوه فولادینس� و مریم کهنسال نودهی
و البته از نشر ثالث سپاسگزار بود.
دیگر این که کیفیت چاپ هم با توجه به قیمت واقعا به طرز عجیبی مناسب است
جلد سخت، صفحات رنگی و چاپ تر و تمیر لذت خواندن کمیکاستری� در جستجو را برای بزرگسالان دو چندان کرده است.
خلاصه که من هنور از ذوق خواندن این کتاب برقی در چشمانم هست که به گمانم در این یادداشتم هم پیدا باشد.
علیرغم این که این روز به شدت درگیر خواندن و نوشتن چند کار مختلفم اما به محض بستن کتاب (تمام شدنش)رفتم جلد بعدی را برداشتم :)

Desde Tales, tal vez antes, se pensaba que "Todo está lleno de vida": hilozoísmo, como si al aplicar una lente poderosa a una gota de agua pudiese verla bullente de minúsculos y agitados seres, o al deshacer la mica notar cómo sus brillos reflejan microscópicas esferas, "electrónicas", orbitando sin cesar. Es esta exacerbada atención a los detalles, a los matices que cobran ante nuestros ojos una nueva, vívida luz; este reconocer que una calle, un empedrado o un jardín pueden huir, o refugiarse, o sentir, o suplicar, lo que más me atrae, lo que más me arrebata de la escritura de Proust.

This adaptation does not shy away from the complexities of the original, but makes them more endurable. I wondered, completing this volume, if now I have read more Proust then ever before? Perhaps this series of volumes will be all of Proust I can endure.
I am one of those strange readers who love reading about Proust, but have never read that much of his work. I chip away at it, but never get that far. If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, with only Proust to read, I'm sure I'll really get into it.

Harika bir deneyimdi. İlustrasyonlar harika. Roza Hakmen'in çevirisine zaten diyecek yok. Öte yandan madlen'in nasıl bir şey olduğunu az çok tahmin ediyordum ama görsel açıdan şahit olması daha güzeldi. Stéphane Heuet muazzam bir iş çıkartmış. Yapı Kredi Yayınları'na, Roza Hakmen'e, Stéphane Heuet'e ve M. Proust'a derin teşekkürle...

Previše opisivanja, previše nepotrebnih rečenica, previše besmislenih rečenica... ova knjiga definitivno spada u top 3 najgore koje sam morala pročitati. Nadam se da je ovo bio zadnji put da se s njome susrećem.

Tästä alkaa Marcel Proustin mittava romaanikokonaisuus, joka kattaa suomeksi kymmenen osaa. Luettavaa siis riittää, vaikka romaani jääkin lopulta kesken Proustin kuoltua ennen sarjan lopullista julkaisua. Lähtökohtaisesti tämä on niitä luku-urakoita, joiden järkevyyttä sopii kyseenalaistaa. Itsekin vastustelin pitkään, mutta riittävästi kehuja vakavasti otettavilta tahoilta kuultuani päätin tarttua tähän klassikkoon.
Kaikki kirjallisuudenharrastajat varmasti tietävät tästä sen iänikuisen madeleine-leivoksen, mutta välttämättä kovin paljon pidemmälle tietämys kirjasarjasta ei sitten ulotukaan. Juonesta puhuminen on ainakin tämän ensimmäisen osan kohdalla merkityksetöntä; tämä ei ole mikään juoniromaani. Sen sijaan Proust kuvaa toisaalta tiettyä vuosisadan vaihteen ranskalaista porvarillista elämäntapaa ja toisaalta muistia ja muistamista.

Ha costat esforços mantenir la lectura al nivell d’exigència del llibre. És preciós i ric en idees, imatges, metàfores, descripcions i matisos; i ho preserva de manera intacta aquesta, la millor traducció –segons l’Ot� que en tenim. És només el primer de 14 (!) volums, que aniré llegint, amb sort, al llarg dels anys, però hi ha idees molt sòlides sobre la vida, l’individu, la natura, la família i la tradició que he admirat pel ritme amb què presenta, desglossa i remata cadascun dels temes. M’ha impressionat això que resumeixo quan diu que l’art és la vida, és la destil·lació de la tradició i la natura imaginades al cap de l’artista. Tinc apuntat que per conèixer les coses hem de resseguir-ne l’entorn (pel cantó de Swann, pel cantó de Guermantes). També m’agrada molt com insisteix en la força de suggerir, més que la d’executar. I suposo que ja en parlarà a “Sodoma i Gomorra�, però està claríssim que l’autor és un pervertit i sembla que en aquesta primera part fa esforços per admetre i reconciliar-se amb aquesta faceta. Evidentment és un dels grans llibres de la història i no us el descobreixo, però l’he descobert per a mi i m’ha agradat més que no pensava. Recomanat si esteu avorrits i us ve de gust, especialment fa de bon llegir amb la panxa plena.

Adaptación gráfica del primer tomo de la obra "que todo el mundo querría haber leído sin haber leído". Simplificaciones aparte (necesarias por la naturaleza de esta edición) me parece es una buena introducción a esta obra esencial. El arte es muy bueno, y vale la pena dedicarle tanto tiempo a la atención de los detalles como al disfrute de la lectura.

Lukeminen tuntui tarkkaan, kauniisti ja viisastuneesti mutta edelleen eläytyen lapsuuden muistamiselta. Hyviä yleispätevämpiäkin avainkokemuksia: mielen teoria monin paikoin mutta etenkin s. 192, oman elämyksen eroaminen karvaasti muiden kokemuksesta, kun vastaantulija murjottaa eikä ihaile kävelyilmaa tai vanhemmat sättivät tyhjänpäiväisestä vastineeksi ylitsevuotavasta hellyydestä. Lisäksi sivulla 150 loistavasti kuvattu tapetun kanan ja kokatun kanan välisen yhteyden muodostumisen tuska ja myönnytys. Ravistelee tarkkaan taltioitu sukulaisten reppanuus ja perhe-elämän koreografia häpeilemättömässä yhdentekevyydessään, jotka jälkikatsonnassa ovat kuolevalle kirjailijalle vimmaisen muistamisen arvoisia. Madeleine-kohtaus on kaiken hehkutuksen väärti siinä määrin, että olen näin lähellä lähdössä hakemaan erikoispelliä leivontaliikkeestä

Jako je teško reći što mislim o ovoj knjizi. Nisam osoba od ogromne koncentracije pa mi je ponekad bilo vrlo teško pratiti, pogotovo ako bi bila u autobusu, gdje sam zapravo pročitala veliku većinu ove knjige. U početku mi se nije svidjela. Smatrala sam radnju dosadnom a klinca napornim. No čim je prošao taj prvi presudni dio o plačljivom klincu, zaljubila sam se u likove. Iako radnje zapravo i nema, Proust se toliko fokusira na psihološku karakterizaciju, na ponašanja, navike i običaje ljudi tog vremena, da su me oni sami zainteresirali.
S opisima je naravno pretjerivao, jer eto, tako se valjda mora, ali prestali su mi smetati pa sam čak i u većini uživala. Zapravo mi je drago da je ovo lektira, jer ne vjerujem da bi ju sama uzela u ruke, a ugodno me iznenadila.

This book is just a part of a bigger book and that's why I didn't like it. It's just a introduction with too much characters and descriptions that need to be fit into something but aren't. I didn't know when I was in the past and when in the present. Another thing I have to mention is that the author changes his toughts so quickly that you can't remember what you read two pages before. And the last thing that I didn't like was the main character, he was so annoying and I couldn't understand him at all. But this is just my opinion :/

The celebrated beginning is easier to read if you allow it to be the dream it is. Let what scintillates sparkle like the dew and sink yourself in the smell of the sacred chestnuts. This is life a century ago in another country and you are to have it transferred to your mind through impressions, which happens easily if you just don't bear down. Go easily. Don't focus on the length or the complications, just imbibe. It is delightful!!

Marcel Proustin klassikkosarjan ”Kadonnutta aikaa etsimässä� ensimmäisessä osassa vuodelta 1913 lähdetään liikkeelle tämän kirjailijan urasta haaveilevan pikkupojan varhaisista vuosista Ranskan Combrayssä (Illiers).
Lapsuuden aikaisia tapahtumia tarkastellaan varakkaiden isovanhempien huvilalta käsin, ja Marcelin vanhemmat tietävät kuuluvansa parempaan porukkaan, joten liian brutaalit paikalliset ikätoverit kielletään kokonaan. Marcelin ainoiksi ystäväksi jäävätkin täten valtavan kirjaston klassikot, ja hän seurusteleekin päivät pitkät teosten fiktiivisten sankareiden kanssa uneksien paremmasta tulevaisuudesta.
Maailmankuulu kirjallisuuden klassikko Proustista kehkeytyikin, mutta hänen elämänkertansa jäi kesken, ja osa sarjan teoksista julkaistiin postuumisti. Nykylukijaa voi viehättää edelleenkin pikkutarkka tajunnanvirtatekniikka, muistin ja muistojen osuus ihmisyksilön kehittymisessä omalla polullaan. Samantapaiseen viipyilevään menneisyyden otteeseen on moni suomalainenkin kirjailija uppoutunut ihan Oscar Parlandista ja miksei Kalle Päätalostakin lähtien.

June 23, 2024Enää yhdeksän osaa jäljellä. Sen jälkeen pitäis olla kadotettu aika löydetty. Tai ainakin aikaa kadotettu. Tää on kuitenkin tosi mielenkiintonen luettava ihan jo rakenteensa takia, kun on kirjoitettu ikään kuin yhdeksi luvuksi. Ensimmäinen (ja viimeinen) luvunvaihto tulee jossain 40 sivun paikkeilla ja loput 200 on sit yhtä putkea, mut se ei oikeastaan haittaa vaan päinvastoin tekee siitä omituisen koukuttavan muistojen ja jatkuvan kuvailun virran mihin on tosi helppo antautua. En tiiä miten poikkeaa ranskan- tai englanninkielisestä rytmityksestä, kun suomennettuna tää on julkaistu jostain syystä kymmenessä osassa ja alkuperäisenä käsittääkseni seitsemässä. Tosi kaunis kirja kieleltään ja sisällöltään, mutta saa nähdä mikä on fiilis kun kaikki ~4000 sivua on joskus ehkä luettu. Tällä hetkellä ainakin kiinnostaa jatkaa � ei niinkään siksi että kutkuttaisi tietää mitä tulee tapahtumaan, vaan koska tuon lukeminen itsessään oli niin miellyttävää.

Club de lectura “Clàssics�. M’ha costat molt de seguir, perquè en realitat no passa gran cosa. Són les reflexions, impressions i descripcions de la infantesa del protagonista. Un ploma magnífica que requereix una lectura molt lenta.

Aquest llibre m’ha ocupat bastant més temps del que pensava en un inici. La lectura és més lenta de l’habitual (almenys en el meu cas) ja que té unes formes de fer les frases que si no estàs atenta t’hi perds.
I no fot punts!! O sigui fa frases com de cinc línies fotent moltes comes. Això m’estressava una mica al principi fins que m’hi vaig acostumar.
Ah i no té capítols xd
Tot i això, m’ha agradat bastant. Són els pensaments del prota quan està en la joventut.
Tinc ganes de seguir.

نمیدونم شما� تجربه خوندن رمان مصور رو دارید یا نه، اما من اولین تجربه ام بود اما نشر چترنگ به عنوان اولین ناشر آثار برجسته ی کلاسیک رو به صورت مصور چاپ کرده،
یکی از این آثار کلاسیک اثر مشهور مارسل پروست، "در جست و جوی زمان از دست رفته"ست.
کمبوره یه بخشی از "در سایه دوشیزگان ۱" ست، کمبوره از نام منطقه ای الهام گرفته شده که مارسل پروست کودکی و نوجوانی خودش رو اونجا� گذرونده و داستان حول محور خاطرات این دوران میگذره
استفن اوئه اقتباس گر این رمان است و به زبان و حوادث تاریخی مارسل پروست وفادار بوده .
کتابی کم حجم و سرگرم کننده ست که در عرض یکی دو ساعت خونده شد برای من تجربه عجیب و جالبی بود 😍

Tämä kirja on ansainnut maineensa: se on nerokas, mutta hankala. Polveilevat virkkeet ja ajatuksen siirtyminen hetkessä aiheesta ja ajasta toiseen vaativat lukijalta jatkuva keskittymistä. Proustia ei voi lukea bussimatkalla töihin: tämä vaatii pidempiä lukutuokioita.
Mutta ne pidemmät tuokiot ovat palkitsevia. Proust kirkoittaa erittäin hyvää tekstiä. Hän tosiaan saa herätettyä lapsuuden Combraynsa eloon ja luo kutkuttavan monisäikeisiä henkilöhahmoja. Isotädin luulosairaus, Françoisen palvova palvelijuus yhdistettynä häijyyteen, Blochin pikkuvanhuus ja suorapuheisuus... Kaikki nämä hahmot tuntuvat hyvin eläviltä, todellisilta.
Tästä on hyvä jatkaa kadonneen ajan etsimistä.
