If you saw his face, you’d have a death wish too.

My life sucks. More accurately, I suck—blood.

I woke up on a cold slab in a morgue, two weeks ago, with no memories, and a new drinking habit that seriously cramps my ability to make friends.

Now I’m hunting for answers in Sin City about my past and who I was, but someone else is hunting me.

When Death, himself, comes to collect me, I find myself facing the most magnificent, terrifying being imaginable. Who knew the grim reaper wore a tailored suit, and ran the most exclusive hotel on the Vegas strip?

He wants to hold me prisoner? Fine, I will rattle the cage and make his life a living hell until I get my freedom.

And I absolutely cannot, under any circumstances, let him know his hand is wrapped around my soul.

*Bitten by Death is book 1 of 3 in a slow burn, action-packed steamy romance featuring a cheeky, tough heroine and dark hero.

“Vivien was bold, irreverent, while also playful, intentional, and relentless in the pursuit of what she wanted. And I didn’t intend on losing her and adding to my long list of regrets. ☠️

This was such a fun read!! Enjoyed every minute of it 👏👌

Did I read a different book than the rest of y’all? Because what in the Wattpad was this???? I saw some reviews say that this was well written and that the world building was spectacular. And all I have to say to that is, where?? This book read like a first draft and honestly everything and anything was a plot hole. I really wish that this author had put more detail into making her characters even semi realistic.

Death? Well he had the sarcasm and speech of a millennial. This guy is supposed to be as old as time and has a big job to but yet he was never actually working. A vampire was his problem, and while I didn’t get far enough to understand the reasoning I’m almost positive that it would have been mediocre.

It’s at times like this that I’m glad KU exists and I didn’t have to buy a whole ebook just to get this.

An amnesiac “snarky female vamp meets the big bad Grim reaper who is a typical rich, pretentious, jerkface with a cliché assistant/butler. 🙄🥱

Here’s a quote from our “charming hero.

“You will stay here until I come for you. You are only alive because I allow it. Because you are useful for drawing out the master vampire. But the second you inconvenience, or otherwise vex me, I will not hesitate to dispose of you.

Yeah. Cute, right? 🙄

I do not understand this trend in literary fiction. Whether it be in sci-fi, paranormal, urban fantasy or billionaire romances, the theme seems to center around a handsome yet pretentious alphahole who at first, treats the heroine like garbage or even like an enemy, then slowly changes his tune and warms up to the charming heroine.

(Yes I understand the enemies to lovers trope, and no I’m not a fan of it because it often glorifies abusive relationships and emotional abusers)

There are so many things wrong with this, from the inequitable power dynamic to the lack of moral character, which we’re supposed to conveniently ignore because “abs and “good looks and “chemistry. Ugh.

I get that some women want the “bad boy. I do. I am all for character growth and giving your characters flaws. But there are ways to write a layered, dynamic, interesting, masculine hero without just making him a douche bag!

A character that is actually worthy of falling in love with is someone who is:

-Compassionate
-Merciful
-Loyal
-Brave
-Confident without being cocky
-Intelligent without being pretentious
-Wise
-Patient
-A person with conviction
-A person with endearing imperfections or quirks
-A person whom you have things in common with (especially weird or unpopular things)
-Someone with shared passions or interests
-Protective (NOT possessive)
-In control of themself
-Is in control in general (but NOT controlling)
-Humorous
-Vulnerable
-Open minded (all about growth)
-Considerate
-Kind

Or at least has a few of those characteristics.

Things that biology dictate what you find attractive:

-Physicality and chemistry

Attraction CAN’T BE THE ONLY BASIS OF A RELATIONSHIP.

Lust is not love.

And what a boring take on the Grim Reaper or Death as a character.

He’s basically Lucifer from the show Lucifer on Netflix, but less charming. Except that character is more interesting because he isn’t just an evil sociopath.

I’d like to imagine death as someone who values life greatly. Who is patient and maybe even lonely. Someone who would have all the facts before making a decision. Someone who has a great respect for life because he comes from the other side of it.

Maybe he’s sarcastic or jaded or a bit of a dick sometimes, but balance that out with something, I don’t know, worth falling for?

I get why he starts to like her. She’s beautiful, adorable, quirky, funny and fierce. But even when he starts to have attraction to her or some feelings for her he still is set on killing her. That doesn’t seem like the start of a great relationship and this is a romance, mind you.

But what on earth is there for our heroine to fall in love with? What does he bring to the table besides being good looking at Rich?

“It wasn’t only his physical prowess that had turned me on and inside-out. There was something in Grim’s eyes, an almost desperate hunger. It was the look of a prisoner straining for freedom, as something inside him yearned to come out. Everything about Grim was heavy and serious, but there was a light inside him. I wanted to coax it out of him. My gut told me it wanted to come out and play with me.

…Ah. The ominous, “light inside of him.

What?!

Girl, he has given you exactly 0 indication that there is any kind of light inside of him. You are projecting!

This has, “But daddy, I can fix him! written all over it.

It would’ve been so much more enjoyable to read Death as a character trying to figure out this mystery while developing a bond with the heroine instead of threatening to hack her head of if she “vexes him.

Then of course on the other hand things are stirring in peoples loins and they’re obviously attracted to each other and blah blah blah.

Wanting to get down and dirty with someone you are absolutely certain you are going to kill and whose tongue you just fantasized about ripping out is creepy and has psycho vibes.

Wanting to get down and dirty with a guy who has just told you he wants to rip your head off is pathetic and sad and has masochistic vibes.

A few times he likened her personality to that of a child, finding her adorable, while in the same breath fantasizing about ripping her tongue out and violently shagging her in an elevator.

…w󲹳.

Death doesn’t seem to pause at all when it comes to wanting to hurt or “off our heroine after offing whatever poor soul was in his opening scene.

I imagine death has been around so long, hardly anything surprises him anymore.

Although I got a little tiny bit of that from this character, it wasn’t enough.

Particularly when he notices that her aura is bright and different and that does make him pause, it doesn’t quite seem to be enough to make him change his mind in terms of sparing her life. He’s still fully set on killing her and he seems to want to do it immediately and the assistant is really the only thing telling him like, “hey man, calm down with the stabby stab for a minute and like, I don’t know, maybe investigate a little more before you start hacking peoples heads off?

Great idea, Tim. Maybe we should all just talk to each other like freaking adults and try to get to the bottom of this.

Oh wait! Death isn’t supposed to even do that! He he doesn’t kill people, nawww! And I quote from dear Timothy:

“That’s really not how it works. He doesn’t kill people…The master guides souls into the afterlife, preserving the sacred cycle of life.

But then he literally rips a vamp’s head off 25% of the way into the story. So wtf? Why this inconsistency? He literally threatened to rip her head off as well so...huh? You sure he’s aware of that, Tim?

Apparently humans are not allowed to be immortal because they all inevitably become power-hungry tyrants.

Well if that’s not the pot calling the kettle onyx.

You would think that death would be an incredibly patient person.

Impulsive and murder-hungry just doesn’t seem like a good temperament for someone named death to have, you know?

I definitely don’t find it sexy.

“Death ruined this book for me.

A fun and refreshing take on Vampires. I have to say I was genuinely surprised and so excited for the direction this book took. I seriously can’t resist anything to do with vampires and to then throw Death into the mix is just the cherry on top. I definitely will be continuing with this trilogy. 😁

Also Grim is dark haired and has golden eyes! That’s my literal weakness! 🥵🫠

This was so good it’s the first book in a series and is a slow burn enemy to lovers paranormal romance that instantly captured my attention with its intriguing storyline. Vivian wakes up in the morgue in a body bag unable to remember even her name she soon realises that she needs blood to survive. Refusing to feed on humans she fights her new instincts instead feeding on vermin to survive.

Upon further investigation she discovers that she was murdered and discarded like rubbish in an alley determined to discover her origins and just how she ended up in this situation Vivian digs deeper it’s during this foray that she encounters Grimm who is literally death himself along with his loyal aide Timothy another supernatural entity. Vivian’s existence is forbidden and Grimm vows to end her but not before he uses her to draw in a master vampire one with an obsession for the newly turned girl.

This is set in Vegas where Grimm owns a hotel. It’s a slow burn but done well and there’s plenty of delicious anticipation and hot chemistry between these two. Grimm finds himself reluctantly amused and captivated but tries to keep his distance knowing her existence is not allowed and it will fall to him to end her when she has served her current purpose.

This was such an easy read I adored Vivian with her constant optimism and quick wit and she definitely keeps Death on his toes with her constant snark and cute comebacks. The push and pull between these two was delicious and I’m excited to see where this goes next. This had action danger plenty of humour and the promise of some delicious heat to come. It’s the first thing I’ve read by this author and I’m impressed. A well-written imaginative story that I raced through definitely recommend this I enjoyed it immensely.

Gave up 24% in. While the FMC is quirky, the MMC is classic dbag with no personality. The insta lust was annoying but I could have gotten passed it if every few pages wasn't an ode to how attractive one found the other. 24% in and the lust drama reeks of teenage hormones despite the fact they are both adults. He finds her childlike and fascinating, which makes his attraction disturbing, and she is obsessed with how ripped and dark he is. Add in decor and outfits better suited to a early 2000s romance book's idea of a sex club... Not for me.

When I see the name "Bitten by death" my mind goes to very kinky places that I don't really mind.
So I can't even explain my dissapiontment after finishing this book.
Where was the SMUT?
I was hoping there would be a smut scene after all the shit that happened but no.
Not only does the FMC hate the love interest now becuase "he saved her" but we again I'm repeating don't GET A SMUT Scene. And I'm not going to hope there is going to be in the next book becuase I'm not even going to bother. This could've been a stand alone with great smut scenes. But all we get is the explanations of how the main characters want to rail each other. So if you considers that smut I suggest you read actual paranormal romance books. I didn't even bother reading the epilouge becuase I'm just very disappointed.

After all the reviews I saw about people Dnf'ing this book I understand now.

I give it one star becuase I found some scenes funny
And I give a second star becuase its a good idea to write about.

After seeing a lot of positive reviews on Booktok and Instagram I thought I’d give it a shot. This was one of the worst books I’ve ever read and I can say that with certainty after just reading the first few pages. I’m not a literature snob, I’ve read my fair share of Wattpad stories and more cheap books than I care to admit so the fact that I can’t seem to remember a book that was worse surprises even me. The storyline was alright, however, there were quite a few Plot-holes and scenes where the author just seemed to have forgotten EVERYTHING they wrote in terms of scene description. The worst part, however, was the writing style and world-building. The first paragraph alone made me want to dump the book in a bin (and maybe set it on fire if I had the physical copy) with sentences continuously starting with “I…, “I did., “So I… and so on and descriptions that made absolutely no sense. Overall I would give it 0 stars (if that were possible).

0-🌶 A very entertaining story. Main character had all the jokes and it was a very wholesome story with a few plot twists. A different take on vampires and gods. Can’t wait to read the next in the series

Personally would have become a high end mistress if I woke up a super hot, immortal with endless time and no earthly needs but I also don't really get the whole hunt for answers to my super secret apparently awesome life either. I mean, am I the only one who would just assume that I was a gas station clerk that got caught up in a robbery that turned into a convenient blood meal for some bum of a vampire?

The FMC was so childish I couldn’t get past it. It was so bad that even Grim (Death) commented on her childish behavior. When the MMC comments on the FMC…you know it’s bad. I actually was fine with MMC because he acted his age.

I’m not here to read about a person in their mid twenties acting like a toddler…ick

I found this on a Facebook ad and I was really pleasantly surprised by how good the storyline and world building was. It was interesting and fresh with a dash of mythology. Continuing on to book and excited to see where the story takes me. Even more surprised I liked it because there was no smut.

This is a well written book with strong characters and an intriguing and entertaining story line. The author brings a fun interaction between Vivian and Death. I enjoyed watching their relationship evolve as they try to find the truth in who sired her. She does a wonderful job developing the story and painting her scenes as she delivers this exciting story. Loved and recommend.

The inner monologue of the FMC is so 2016 millenial and it's cringe and I LOVE it. Such a fun book and the world building was actually really interesting! I loved the incorporation of Ancient Egyptian Mythology and the chemistry between the two MCs was really well done. Overall, this is a fun and silly book that is, at times, ridiculous but in a good way.

Not terrible but also not amazing

The ‘snarky FMC comes across a little wattpad-esque and at times makes for a difficult read. But the plot of the story and this new take (for me) on vampirism and Egyptian gods makes for an interesting read.

The MMC is a rather typical alphahole,he threatens her life and tells her how irritating she is, but then contradicts himself in his head when he wants to hurt anyone who hurts her. It reads a little predictable and like many other books.

There are a few plot holes, like at one point she puts on pants but then suddenly she’s wearing a skirt. Or she has a bodysuit on but then it’s described as a catsuit. Just small things that should have been caught in editing that makes you feel like you’re reading on wattpad, not a published book. The inconsistency with Grim’s eyes drove me mad, they were gold then amber then black then chocolate coloured and then the colour of whiskey MAKE UP YOUR MIND. Also, the switching POVs without any indication of who was who was just annoying!

The romance isn’t quite there (yet), I know it’s supposed to be a slow burn romance but so far it’s just all lust and horniness.

I will give the next book a try in the hopes the writing improves and the story continues to be interesting.

liked but confused..

.. I wanted to love this so bad because I loved the idea of the plot. I absolutely love dual POV books, but it was so hard to determine whose POV I was reading. There wasn’t a clear definition especially when the POV would change mid chapter.

I will most likely read the second book because I loved the characters. But I hope it will be differ between POVs. This plot was such a cool and unique idea though.

Thoughts

I absolutely loved this story. A really great start to a series that I am excited to sink my teeth into, so to speak. We're thrown into a super interesting world of mortals, where vampires and gods exist. Naturally, the enemies-to-lovers romance is a must between the two main characters. Viviene and her humour is excellent. Albeit, I did grow a little tired of the volume of pop culture references. She is awesome and can fight. Grim our male main character is brilliant and mostly deadpan throughout. This is an awesome spin on a paranormal romance mixed with Egyptian Mythology (yup that excited me too), conspiracy and fantasy. The writing is so well done and casual, I cannot wait to read more!

✅️ Positives

The enemies to lovers PNR is fantastic. Between Viv and Grim, the spark and banter between the two is top tier. Really great chemistry and so well written. I'm somewhat relieved that there was no actual spice here (monologued and hinted at). It really added to the clear tension.

The writing style I really enjoyed. I found it to be casual and easy to read combined with great humour. I didn't enjoy the amount of pop culture references, but it was manageable and logical when used.

The plot and subplots are top tier. This is ultimately an enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance with vampires and mythological beings. I loved it and am really on board with the use of Egyptian Mythology which is so often overlooked.

The characters are great even the side characters. Vivien is a strong independent woman with a great sense of humour, she is a bad ass and unafraid to get under Grim's skin.
Grim is as deadpan as they come. Only focusing on his duty of reaping souls, unable to relax and is easily affected by Viv even though he despises all vampires.
Then add in Timothy, Grim's aide who just adds a really funny, Alfred style butler component. Brilliant addition to the story.

~ "Is that a pineapple and hibiscus garnish?" I asked, incredulously.
Timothy smoothed a hand down his suit. "Yes, well, just because you are a blood-sucking fiend doesn't mean I have to skimp on presentation."
~

Finally there's Miranda, our mortal security guard accidentally thrown into the mix. She has zero fear, is army trained and will likely have a bigger role in future books.

The bonus epilogue chapter is a must read also!!

Negatives

The use of pop culture references, whilst manageable was frustrating when used in excess.

Happy Reading

This book is the second in a trilogy by Holly Roberds. I hadn't read a book by Holly Roberds until I started this series and can I just say OMG I loved this series. It's so fun, adventurous, hilarious and entertaining. The writing is fast paced, lots of twists and turns and amazing characters.

I can't get enough of Vivian and Grim. Grim the God of Death and Vivian the vampire have to figure out what's going on with the other God's and who is trying to upset the balance of life and ruin the peace that has lasted for thousands of years. Seeing Vivian change Grim was so fascinating and sweet. She brings out the better side of him and you really see a depth to his character in this book that you didn't see in the first. Both characters grow and become more complex with each book. I also really love the side characters in this series.

Definitely recommend to anyone who loves fantasy romance books and spice. This series will have you laughing out loud constantly. Another great thing about this series is that it took me no time at all to read the books because it's such a fast and easy read, you don't want to put it down once you start it.
