The Seven Year Slip

Rate this book
An overworked book publicist with a perfectly planned future hits a snag when she falls in love with her temporary roommate…only to discover he lives seven years in the past, in this witty and wise new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of The Dead Romantics.

Sometimes, the worst day of your life happens, and you have to figure out how to live after it.

So Clementine forms a plan to keep her heart safe: work hard, find someone decent to love, and try to remember to chase the moon. The last one is silly and obviously metaphorical, but her aunt always told her that you needed at least one big dream to keep going. And for the last year, that plan has gone off without a hitch. Mostly. The love part is hard because she doesn’t want to get too close to anyone—she isn’t sure her heart can take it.

And then she finds a strange man standing in the kitchen of her late aunt’s apartment. A man with kind eyes and a Southern drawl and a taste for lemon pies. The kind of man that, before it all, she would’ve fallen head-over-heels for. And she might again.

Except, he exists in the past. Seven years ago, to be exact. And she, quite literally, lives seven years in his future.

Her aunt always said the apartment was a pinch in time, a place where moments blended together like watercolors. And Clementine knows that if she lets her heart fall, she’ll be doomed.

After all, love is never a matter of time—but a matter of timing.

“i loved how a book, a story, a set of words in a sentence organized in the exact right order, made you miss places you’ve never visited, and people you’ve never met.

this story centers around clementine, an overworked book publicist who has hit a crossroads in her life. her life and career are perfectly planned out and she is now up for one of the biggest promotions of her life, but she is still reeling from the devastating and unexpected loss of her aunt, analea. she has recently moved into her aunt’s apartment and while her aunt has already told her about the magical apartment, which she doesn’t believe - so imagine clementine’s surprise when one day she finds a strange, but attractive man standing in her kitchen. here we meet iwan, a tattooed, inspiring chef with big dreams. he’s subletting the apartment from her aunt, but from seven years ago.

wow what a magical, beautifully written and heartwarming story!! this was that book that completely took me off guard. this is a book you easily fall in love with, it swept me off my feet and surprised me in the best possible way. some things were a little predictable, but i found i didn’t care. i loved the new york setting, it always just does it for me!! 😍

this book is so much more than a romance. this story takes you on a journey of clementine’s self discovery, her friendships, mistakes, passions, her growth and how she navigates through life dealing with grief. i loved how this story represents grief because i felt like i was grieving the loss of her aunt too. clementine’s relationship with her aunt was a pivotal point of this story, i was instantly drawn to how strong and deep their relationship was. i loved that analea’s magical apartment keeps clementine connected to her in some way and that her wisdom still lives on with clementine.

this book doesn’t shy away from the uncomfortable truths of grief, and through the characters experiences, readers are invited to reflect on the universal nature of loss and the resilience required to navigate the ever-shifting landscape of emotions. grief is not portrayed as a mere obstacle but as an integral part of the characters journeys. the author intricately weaves the threads of sorrow, allowing us to witness the characters raw and authentic responses to loss. the healing process also becomes an integral part of the story, adding depth and authenticity to the characters experiences.

“nothing lasts forever. not the good things, not the bad. so just find what makes you happy, and do it for as long as you can.

clementine west:
she’s not perfect. she’s got her own set of flaws and quirks, and that’s what makes her real. you’re not just cheering for her; you’re on this wild ride, feeling every high and low as she kicks ass and tries to make sense of the temporal mayhem. we see her struggle with grief and we see how she grapples with a sense of uncertainty and directionlessness in her life. she finds herself at a crossroads, unsure of which path to take or what her future holds. i really enjoyed seeing her development from being so closed-off and pursing the life she thought she had to live, to embracing that people change. it was beautiful to see her realise she can dictate how her life can be, and that your job doesn’t define who you are. we all feel lost sometimes and struggle to understand with what we should do with ourselves. but life is all about the struggles you go through and it’s okay to embrace it. everyone has their own path, challenges and lessons to learn. i love how she met iwan at the right time, he makes her rekindle the things she used to love in life and i think that was beautiful.

james iwan ashton:
in a world of boys, he's a gentleman
there are so many dimensions to his character. he’s the kind of guy who makes you believe in love at first sight. whether he’s sweeping lemon off her feet with grand romantic gestures or sharing tender moments of vulnerability, he exudes an undeniable allure that leaves us swooning with every page turn. and oh how his charming charisma got me. he is patient, kind, wonderful, charming, cooks for her, calls her lemon, dances with her and just brings clementine out of her shell. his personality was so refreshing and i just adore how passionate he is about life. he is someone who observes and listens to everything clementine has to say, and no matter how long ago she told him something, he is the person that will always remember every one of their conversations. even though this story is written in clementine’s pov, i love that we still got to see how he is grown and followed his dreams in that 7 years.

clementine + iwan:
clementine finds herself seven years in the past, while iwan is seven years into the future. this temporal discrepancy sets the stage for their unconventional romance and adds layers of complexity to their relationship. but aaa they are the epitome of soft love - it is love that feels like a cozy blanket on a rainy winter day. they are nothing short of soul-mates, i was rooting for them throughout this story. the attraction was obvious and the chemistry was palpable but certain aspects seemed to happen too fast. the fmc would make remarks about “present iwan being so much different from “past iwan so i wish we had more time with them in the present to convince me they would work out. their love was very much insta-lovey and their connection was from the get-go. i say this a lot but i always expect build-up, i hate when characters just jump right into everything. how do you know if you’re in love after just spending one weekend together?? but amidst the instant connection, the romance is the beating heart of the narrative, reminding us that love isn’t always neat and orderly. it’s messy, intense, and, in this case, comes with a side of time-bending complications that keep you hooked from start to finish. but their love does feels authentic and their mutual support and encouragement allows them to grow individually.

“you only live once. and if you do
it right, once is all you need.

reading this book felt like a warm hug on a crisp autumn night. a comforting embrace that lingers long after the final page is turned. it’s like laughter from the one person who holds your heart, a beautiful and melodic symphony that resonates within you. it’s dancing in the kitchen while cheap wine flows, eating frozen pizza that’s then followed by a blissful homemade dessert, it’s where bathtubs become art studios, painting on a gloomy nyc day, it’s chasing the moon and taking a bold leap into the realm of love. as this book states “a matter of timing is important and i definitely feel like i read this book at the perfect time.

By the time I finished this book, I felt such a deep longing for these characters and their romance, I didn't want it to end. But when it did end, it left me satisfied and full of heart for them.

Ngl this book in no way is perfect. There are flaws and such confusions as to how the magic or the apartment operates. Even after finishing it, I feel like I don't have a good grasp on that but during the second half, I decided to just vibe with it instead of trying to find logic. The first half was faulty for me mostly because of that and also, the romance seemed to have a rocky start. The second half picks it up amazingly and had me realising that I love these characters and story. I was completely immersed in it and finally understood why so many people adore this book.

There are couples for whom you are just so happy that they stay together and wouldn't imagine one without the other. Iwan and Clementine are that couple. Their love and patience spoke volumes. We always speak of the guy falling for the girl hard and fast. But we see Clementine falling so bad for Iwan and trying to battle those feelings and terrible need for him. I ate that up. I loved how Clementine loved Iwan. Iwan and his moments had me swooning, blushing and giggling for him. I just wish we got more of them in the present. Look, I needed another 200 pages 🫣

Iwan is charming, sexy and so swoon worthy. I loved his golden retriever vibes and how easy it was to like and fall for him. Him losing sight of his dreams and aim, what motivated him, how he used to think and dream felt so real. I liked seeing him from Clementine's perspective. She just loved that man so much, I adore her. It took me a lot of time to warm up to her tho. The portrayal of grief felt real, I personally didn't find it too impactful cause I never felt that attached to her aunt. Yes, am aware how insensitive I sound at the moment but I just don't think I cared about her aunt that much 😭

Despite the messy start, am happy I read it. This book will surely stay on my mind for a while 🥹

Thanks to lovely Chertzo for reading it with me and for listening to me fangirl over Iwan 💛

this book is so real and raw and emotional 😭

ashley poston writes grief so realistically and deeply like who hurt you girl? and these characters, my gawd why do i feel so mother right now? i’ll read anything this woman writes fr.

the way this book is literally right person, wrong time personified‼️ and i ate that shit UP‼️

i feel like i day this about every fmc these days but i mean it with this one; clementine is literally mirrorball coded like to the T! she’s so me coded if i’m gonna be real. love how ashley poston so accurately writes how it is to be a woman trying to find her footing in this world.

and Iwan my GAWD!! i need to bag a chef because gah damn, the way i want this man soooo bad. he’s so attentive and soft and deserves forehead kisses (from me specifically) if he was real, i’d put him in a gigantic fish tank and tap the glass a bunch🥹

selecting the romance novel i will pin my hopes, my dreams, my next comfort read, my choice to be literate, my happiness, and all my chances at liking anything on

and this time...it worked???

this was so cute and fun and unique. i really fell for these characters and more importantly, for this apartment...

this book should be jailed for convincing my city-mouse self i need a spare bedroom for my busts of dead poets and my ivy and my shelves of travel books and my robin's egg blue chair.

the romance in this was sweet, but like all romance books, i liked the character arc and the details even more: the food, the journey, the banter. to be fair, that's not a bad problem to have.

bottom line: this was such an unexpected good time.

4.5 stars! I'm obsessed with the writing style and word choice. This book was BEAUTIFULLY written. I will be running to read Ashley Poston's next book🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀️🏃🏼‍♀. Not only was the wording beautiful, but the way Ashley Poston writes about grief, happiness, and finding yourself was so authentic and raw. Definitely a fantastic read if you're struggling with happiness in your job and finding your place in life.

AND the magical realism of the apartment that slips through time was so cool. There's no explanation behind the magic which I'm happy about. There's no need to know how it works, which keeps the magic that much more alive. I also loved the message of staying true to who you are and your past self while also allowing yourself to grow and change.

And last, but not least, the romance. I love Iwan & Clementine. He's a chef & she works in publishing which was so fun to read about. The romance is the only place I have the tiniest bit of critique tho. I wanted more of it! I wouldn't say this book is insta love at all but I did feel like they fell for each other in the past in a matter of days. I wish there were 2ish more chapters to fully flesh out the romance.

Overall tho, would highly recommend!!

Reading this book was like going on a date with a guy who’s perfect on paper but there’s just no spark in person. Cool concept, great writing, a sweetheart of a book boyfriend…I just never wanted to pick it up. I think maybe it was too insta-lovey for me…give me a slow burn or give me death. I definitely see why so many of you love it though, and godspeed.

hello, new comfort book. 💛 this is the book i will be constantly recommending this fall. so, if this isn’t on your tbr, you better add it right now or else.

as a somewhat lost 20-something, this book just hit different. you know a book is good when it makes you reevaluate your own life.

somehow, the author managed to make this book a sweet, wholesome romance and a painful life lesson at the same time. it was beautifully done. *chef’s kiss*

grab yourself a hot tea or coffee, settle in with your favorite blanket, then get ready to giggle, kick your feet, and maybe cry a little.

(also he’s a sweet, wholesome chef with a southern drawl. what more could you want?) 🤭

“Isn’t it strange how the world works sometimes? It’s never a matter of time, but a matter of timing.

The Seven Year Slip revolves around Clementine, a twenty-something book publicist who inherits her late aunt’s apartment in New York City. her aunt always told her that the apartment was magical and had the ability to slip through time, but she never truly believed that it was true. until she finds this strange guy named Iwan standing in the kitchen of the apartment and discovers that he’s living seven years in her past, and she’s living seven years in his future.

since magical realism isn’t a genre that i’m a fan of, i was a little hesitant to read this book. but i decided to give it a go after seeing all the hype surrounding it and, surprisingly, i ended up enjoying it more than i imagined i would! the premise is so unique and interesting. at first i thought it would be just a romance with magical elements, but it’s way more than that. it’s a story about grief, healing, self-discovery, courage, changes, new beginnings and, most importantly, love.

this book is beautiful and heartfelt, with a meaningful story and great main characters.

i found Clementine to be such a nice and well-written character. my favorite thing about her is that she had so much depth, and i liked the fact that she was far from one-dimensional. the way the author portrayed her struggles and flaws made her seem human and easy to relate with, i found myself relating to her in some ways and that’s the best part of reading stories about realistic characters. throughout the book we see her grieving the loss of her beloved aunt and i feel like that was handled perfectly it was so raw and real. i enjoyed to see her navigating through her grief, finding herself and learning how to embrace change.

i have only positive things to say about Iwan because he was literally the sweetest. i’ve loved him from the very beginning; i mean, how could i not? he was so endearing, fun, kind, easily loveable and had such a charming and joyful personality. it was hard not to love him. Iwan’s a chef and it was just so adorable to see how passionate he was about cooking. i’m not even as passionate as him when it comes to cooking, but i could listen to him talking about it for hours straight and i wouldn’t get bored. i wish we’d gotten his POV by the way, i’m sure it would make me appreciate his character even more.

the romance between Clementine & Iwan was cute and i can’t deny that their chemistry was off the charts, they had many nice moments together that made my heart melt. however, i have to admit that it felt a bit too insta-lovey for me. i honestly don’t think that there was enough build-up, which is something that bothered me a bit. it should have developed more slowly in my opinion. on top of that, i think that in general the romance was missing something i don’t know exactly what, i just felt that way. don’t get me wrong, it’s still a good and heartwarming love story, but it could’ve been *slightly* better.

besides my small issues with the romance, i also had some other complaints that prevented me from giving this book 5 stars. first, a few things weren’t well executed especially the time travel aspect. also, the last couple chapters were kind of boring for me, and although the ending was sweet, it wasn’t my favorite because it was very rushed.

but those things aside, i had a great time reading The Seven Year Slip. i’m a sucker for early 2000s romcoms and this book gave me all the vibes. definitely worth the read!

Can you imagine falling for a man who lives seven years in the past? How does it feel to find the right person at the wrongest time? What if the universe has other plans, adding more obstacles to prevent your happy ending? What if you find the same man in the present, but he's not the same person you fell for and you're not the same woman, even though you only just met?

This is a mind-blowing, complex, and smart book with many puzzle pieces that you need to put in the right places to fully enjoy the experience! Ashley Poston has created another intelligent, heartwarming, and epic paranormal romance with endearing characters.

The quirky, artistic, lost, workaholic heroine is grieving and losing her happiness after the loss of her aunt and best friend. Meet Clementine, a.k.a Lemon, an aspiring publisher, problem solver, and efficient worker who traveled the world with her eccentric, peculiar, and joyful aunt Analea and learned that magic is real.

Clementine spent a lot of time at her aunt's magical apartment since she was a child. The place could move in time, seven years ahead or backwards, to bring back different people at different time zones. As Clementine grew older, she became more skeptical of her aunt's stories, until she lost her forever and inherited the apartment, becoming a front-row witness to its magic.

When she returns to her aunt's place, she meets a charming stranger with a delightful Southern accent. Her first reaction is to scream at him and kick him out, but then she realizes that he's not the one in the wrong place at the wrong time; she is the one who has returned seven years into the past.

That handsome, red-headed stranger's name is Iwan. He's an aspiring chef, determined to make his grandpa proud, who is ready to start over as a dishwasher at a fancy restaurant. He cooks her the best fajitas she's ever eaten, dances with her, gives her the best kiss, and then disappears the next day.

Clementine does everything in her power to find the man she barely knows, but quickly realizes that the present-day version of Iwan is closer than she expected. What if she lost her chance to find her soulmate forever, or if she never finds the right time for them?

I loved this complex, enigmatic, and witty story! But what I loved most was the unique relationship between the aunt and niece. It's a heartwarming story about timing, second chances, self-growth, and adapting to change in pursuit of love. The epilogue made me cry and sigh for a few minutes! If you enjoyed "Dead Romantics," you'll love this poignant fantasy.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for providing me with a digital copy of this wonderful book in exchange for my honest thoughts.

this book only solidifies my previous statement that “AP needs to only write adult romance novels from now on.

once again, she has created a really magical relationship between two characters. and while the plot of this story isnt based in reality, the way clementine and iwan develop and connect with each other is very real and heartwarming.

which is why i wanted more of them! in the end, i was left begging for more romance. this is definitely more of a womens fiction kind of story as a lot of page time is dedicated to clementines bond with her aunt, trying to figure out her life goals, her career, and her friends. and so, because of that, there wasnt enough clementine + iwan content to satisfy my romance needs. which is such a massive bummer because their plotline is *chefs kiss.*

but i still really love the concept and there are a lot of adorable moments along the way! so heres me begging for another AP novel as soon as possible!

thank you, berkely, for the ARC!

It’s me, not you dear author. Somehow the sweet moments I anticipated just didn’t feel real to me. Maybe because the characters didn’t crawl into my heart so I wasn’t that invested in how the love story unfolded. A major plus is the plot; time travel is always appealing, and it was done masterfully. Wish I just could relate more to the characters, but it was still a good story.

3.5⭐️ I don't think I've ever read anything so cute fluffy and yet so sad 🥺💛

✔️ contemporary romance
✔️ paranormal fiction
✔️ magical realism
✔️ book publicist fmc
✔️ hot chef mmc

I had a book club discussion for two with my lovely girl 💛 and we had similar issues with this book:

~the insta love
~ how the time slip wasn't well executed
~ the back and forth in the timelines left holes in the plot/story
~ the story suffered without Iwan's pov

still, this book gave me all the feels 😭 Iwan was right, yellow lemon is a perfect description of color and flavor for this book because the bittersweet emotions were real. I couldn't even tell if my moist eyes were from happiness or sadness at some point

Clementine in dealing with the grief and loss of her favorite aunt, moves into the magical home her aunt left behind. There, she slips through time but it isn't before she shares a weekend of special moments with a up and coming wannabe chef

7 years later, Clementine returns to life as she knew it but what will her new life be if she is stuck with thoughts of this hot chef who she can't track down but has been right under nose this entire time

was 7 years only 7 seconds to him as well with regards to connecting they shared? Is he the same person she met 7 years ago? Or will she have to start all over again? 💛💛

this was betty's spotify playlist for Iwan and Clementine I collaborated on:

Clementine, our FMC is a book publicist at a small but reputable publishing house who has recently become the owner of her aunt’s fashionable Upper East Side apartment. Her aunt passed away six months ago, and Clementine is still struggling with her grief. She thinks fondly about her adventures with her aunt and remembers her aunt saying that the apartment was magical in a literal, not just metaphorical, sense.

But it’s not until Clementine enters her apartment one day to find it transported seven years into the past that she really believes it. And to complicate matters, there’s a man there who says he’s been given permission to stay there for the summer while her aunt is away traveling.

Stuck together for the time being, Clementine starts to fall for him despite being someone who has always kept her heart closely guarded. She knows it’s useless falling for a man who exists seven years in the past, but before she can figure out what to do next, he’s gone again

╰➤Ď‧₊˚✧[𝓜𝔂 𝓣𝓱𝓸𝓾𝓰𝓱𝓽𝓼]✧˚₊

The Seven Year Slip is a really fun, classic rom-com type story. You basically can guess what’s going to happen, but there’s a lot of joy in the anticipation of when and how it’ll come about. Along with the com-com elements, the book also lightly explores the way people change over time.

I had a lot of fun reading this delightful book, and it sped by very quickly.

╰➤ Full disclosure- If you don't already know. I am a huge sucker for anything involving time travel, so I had feeling this would be a win for me. And it was- my only complaint is that I wish the story leaned more into the magical realism and less on the rom-com side.

If you’re looking for a book that’s fun and has a classic rom-com-type feel, the Seven Year Slips serves it up in a bright, time-traveling package. It’s a little predictable in the way that rom-coms can be fairly predictable, but it’s also enjoyable and delivers on its entertaining and slightly magical premise.

I’d easily recommend this book to anyone looking for some rom-com goodness.

”Isn't it strange how the world works sometimes? It's never a matter of time, but a matter of timing. 🍋

this book about grief, love and a little bit of magic was absolutely beautiful, and i’m so glad i read this right after getting out of my short reading slump 🥹💛 i absolutely love stories about time slips/travel ~

ᡣ. clementine
clementine had so much depth. she had her own struggles, and her emotions were so raw and genuine which made her so relatable. this book focuses on her struggles with the loss of her aunt, which made her stop doing the things she used to enjoy and become closed-off, but thanks to iwan and all the time slipping, she began to heal and do the things she used to enjoy again. eventually, she figured out what she truly wanted to do and who she wanted to be. i enjoyed watching her go through the process of healing, self-discovery, and growth 🥲

“I think that nothing lasts forever. Not the good things, not the bad. So just find what makes you happy, and do it for as long as you can.

”You only live once. And if you do it right, once is all you need.

ᡣ. iwan
can we all talk about how FREAKING charming iwan is??! his passion for cooking is actually so freaking sexy and adorable. i’m not even kidding when i say i could watch him cook and listen to him talk about cooking for hours straight 😭😭😭

He’d gotten a lemon flower tattooed over his heart.
“What do you tell people, when they ask about it?
“I tell them about a girl I fell in love with at the right place but the wrong time.
“And what are you going to tell them now?
“That we finally got the timing right.

ᡣ. clementine and iwan
the tension was CRAZYYY. I LOVED THE MOMENTS WHERE THEY WERE IN THE APARTMENT TOGETHER AAAAH.

one of my favourite parts of this book was when clementine confronted iwan about how much he had changed. i too, like clementine, felt upset by how much iwan changed, but this part really hit me and made me realize how change is not always a bad thing.

“Isn’t it strange how the world works sometimes? It’s never a matter of time, but a matter of timing.

When I had decided to read this, I wanted a cute rom-com. What I got was a beautifully written, heartwarming story that is so much more than that. It's a story of many layers and depth of grief, healing, self-discovery, change, and finding love. There were sprinkles of laughter, moments of emotion, and tears amongst the magical premise, making this book easy to love.

Clementine is in her late twenties working as a book publicist and is up for a big promotion. She has her career and life planned out with how she wants it to go. That is until the unexpected death of her Aunt Analea that sends her reeling with what to do next with her life and plans. She inherited her late aunt's apartment, the one that her aunt had always told her was magical, but she had never believed it. One day, she enters the apartment to find a strange man standing in the kitchen whose name is Iwan and is subletting the apartment from her aunt seven years in the past.

Clementine West is intelligent, resilient, and flawd, her life is messy as she is trying to figure her life out after she lost one of her favorite people in the world. We get to follow her on the path of finding herself and the process of grief that was so real and raw feeling. I loved watching her grow and discover that people change through the years, including herself. She realised that you don't have to follow the path that a younger you once loved if it no longer fits into your life. She finds herself and rediscovers the things that she once loved. I found myself being able to relate to her in many ways, the most common being change, as most of us don't always handle it well.

"I didn’t need to be fixed. I just needed . . . to be reminded that I was human."

James Iwan Ashton
is kind, charming, and so sweet. He is a chef and is so passionate about it that he wants to make the perfect meal. The one meal that holds memories and a special place in your heart. He had me so giddy and swooning. He can cook for me anytime. He had me falling for him from the moment that he entered. I just wish we would have gotten more of him and his Pov.

“I think, that nothing lasts forever. Not the good things, not the bad. So just find what makes you happy, and do it for as long as you can.

Clementine and Iwan
are the epitome of love at first sight. Was this insta- love, yes, but I still adored them. The chemistry between them was palpable, and you could feel their feelings for one another. Gosh, I loves there back and forth banter so much. It had me giggling. I loved the nickname that Iwan gave to Clementine. Lemon, it was cute and different. The only things that I feel like was missing in their time together was that I would have liked a bit more of them in the past to see more of the feelings that had together grow. The other is that I wanted more of the present to see where it took them.

“I went on so many dates, I kissed so many people, I tried to fall in love again and again, and all I could think about was you.

“All seven years? “Two thousand five hundred and fifty- five days. Not that I was counting.

This book may have just become one of my comfort books as it just feels like a warm hug on a chilly day. I know that this is a standalone, but I would love to see more of Iwan and Clementine. The ending was one of the sweetest though a bit rushed. It was still one of my favorite moments. I recommend this if you're looking for a heartwarming story and hope that you adore it as I did.

“To the moon and back.

“Life doesn’t always go as planned. The trick is to make the most of it when it doesn’t.

"That was love, wasn’t it? It wasn’t just a quick drop it was falling, over and over again, for your person. It was falling as they became new people. this is my first 5 star romance, plus a new favorite book!

this was the perfect romance book for spring. the vibes were amazing. such a comfort read.

Ashley’s writing is so good. she describes things so well! especially the food. absolutely magical.
there were also so many times I laughed out loud!

clementine was well-written and very relatable. she has a great sense of humor.
the addition of grief made her much more developed and human. i felt even more connected to clementine because of that.

iwan could’ve used a bit more depth, but his character was so sweet and sunshiney. i loved him! and he’s a chef, a really good chef—what more could you ask for?

the plot was fast paced and fun! such a good time. the time travel bit was a little confusing, but i was able to figure it out. and there was a part of the book where clementine didn’t see iwan which was harder to get through. however, i still enjoyed the book as a whole.

overall, it was a quick, fast paced romance that will touch every part of your heart. this is one of my #1 romance books! always recommend. :))

Last year, after reading the synopsis, I had no idea how Ashley Poston was going to deliver on the . How was it even going to work?

Not only did she nail that, but it ended up being one of my most memorable books of 2022. I loved it so much and have been eagerly anticipating this new release ever since.

The time has finally come for the latest Adult Romantic Contemporary from Ashley Poston.

Unsurprisingly, The Seven Year Slip is stunning. I love this story with my whole heart. Poston has such a unique and magical sense of Contemporary storytelling that really vibes with my tastes.

I cried actual tears, y'all. That's rough, but feels so good.

In this story we follow Clementine, a single-woman in NYC. She works in publishing and lives in a well-loved apartment that she recently inherited from her late-Aunt.

Six-months have passed since the toughest day in Clementine's life and she feels like she is doing a relatively good job holding it all together. She is still working hard, focusing on that and just staying busy.

She may be fooling herself though, as she's sort of standing in place; stuck.

That is until the apartment, which her Aunt always promised her was magical, delivers her the perfect gift she needed to potentially shake her out of her funk.

A man. The apartment delivers her a handsome, kind, sexy man with a Southern drawl and a penchant for cooking. The only problem, for him, it's seven years in the past.

How the heck is this going to work, you may be wondering? How does this even make sense? All I can say to you is, trust the Poston.

The Seven Year Slip is an absolute delight. It's so layered and beautiful. I loved so, so much about this story, but for me, the really special part was the relationship between Clementine and her Aunt.

As someone who is so incredibly close with my now adult niece and nephew, that aspect hit me hard. Right in the feels, like a gut punch. You could tell that Poston was writing this story from the heart. I felt it all the way to the marrow of my bones.

Poston's writing is incredibly smooth and engaging. She quickly pulls you in and before you know it, you're completely immersed in whatever world she has created.

Additionally, she has a smart and snarky wit that just tickles me. Her characters are fantastic and I love the exploration of the different kinds of love and relationships. Particularly the family relationships are so well done.

As you can tell, I adored this story. I walk away with a full heart. 10-out-of-10 recommend.

Thank you so much to the publisher, Berkley, for providing me with a copy to read and review. This will definitely be a standout for me in 2023!

The way I connected with this book really left me in tears…every single character felt like a part of me and tiny bits of them were part of the people i love the most.
The true beauty about this book is the range of emotions that are delivered to me. i was giggling one moment and the next i was shedding a tear. The writing was truly magical and i was captivated by it.Everything in this book contained was so human,so relatable, so touching and it was all surrounded by the simplicity of what life is while the magic appears

𝘾𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙚
She was so beautifully written. She has so much depth in her heart as a young women who has been through so much, it was so touching to watch her growth as i read. Her mentioning her auntie through the book left me in tears every single damn time.
I feel like if her auntie still be alive, she would be my favorite character without no doubt

i fell in love with this men IN EVERY SINGLE PAGE ALL OVER AGAIN.In present time, you could see how he struggled to understand his path in life & it's truly remarkable that lemon was able to help him find it.He knew EXACTLY how to be a romantic mf plus a scorpio. And ugh..do i have to mention my men can COOK.

Clementine and Iwan's story is out of the ordinary yet i was still smiling and kicking my feet the entire book. They were the definition of “right person wrong time since both of them changes through time yet still manage to love each other in different ways.

I adored the time travel theme since i recently watched Totally Killer i get the same atmospheric vibes of the magical realism.I don't think it was corny and it was definitely executed well between past & present times through the book.
Another theme that time traveling highlighted was the change people go through over the course of their lives and how we can't hold on to someone for who they were in the past but for who they are now.
I honestly haven’t seen any trigger warnings in the previous reviews i have red so i wanted to mention them since it caught me off guard and effected me deeply through pages.

𝙏𝙒: 𝙜𝙧𝙞𝙚𝙛, 𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙙e.

Besides the triggers,i really did found myself chasing the moon with this book
This was the first book i red from Ashley and it made me adore her i can't wait to read The Dead Romantics next

Clementine ford is a busy book publicist going through a break up and moves into her late aunt’s apartment. She didn’t believe her aunty’s stories about the the magical elements of the the apartment but she quickly discovers not everything is as it seems when she discovers a handsome man named Iwan in her apartment, 7 years in the past.

𝗧𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀

🍋 This was such a cute rom/com and took me by surprise by how much I enjoyed it. The elements of magical realism appealed to me and made the story so much more enjoyable. It was reminiscent of the time travellers wife and 13 going on 30!

“I loved how a book, a story, a set of words in a sentence organised in the exact right order, made you miss places you’ve never visited, and people you’ve never met.

🍋 This book is perfect for people of all ages 18+ (mild spice) but I feel like it was MADE for people in their 20-30’s. I love how this book commented on not only the process of grief for a loved one but grieving your past self as you grow and evolve overtime.

“And I knew I was falling. The kind of falling that would hurt when I hit the ground. The kind of falling that would shatter me into pieces.

🍋 This book is very relatable and I think a lot of people can sympathise with both Iwan and Clementine. Iwan was an absolute sweetheart (and a chef 🫠👨‍) and I found myself leaning towards the flashback scenes rather than the current timeline. It just reiterates that overtime we can become hardened by the world and allows you reflect on your younger & carefree self.

“I hated her for leaving, and I loved her for staying as long as she could.

🍋 I loved Clementine’s character as well, she is a career driven woman who got in a path that didn’t necessarily make her happy. She has a fear of change which has dictated a lot of her life but her flaws made me invested in her story. I loved watching her self discovery and process of grief. This book touches on hard subjects which added emotional depth to the story.

“Isn't it strange how the world works sometimes? It's never a matter of time, but a matter of timing.

🍋 I’m a sucker for romance and I loved the invisible string element of these two. Iwan is seven years in the future and Clementine is seven years in the past but they are constantly drawn to each other as they navigate early adulthood. While the romance was definitely prevalent, I wish we had more time with them in the past as it felt like we only saw snapshots of their love story. I do understand why this book was predominately set in the future, instead of holding on to ‘what if’s but the extra buildup would have pushed it to 5 stars for me.

“You can just dance, Lemon. You can take the lead. “And you’ll follow? “To the moon and back.

🍋 I felt like the the magical realism could have done with a bit more explanation as well as including some markers to make it easier for the reader when shifting through the timelines as I was confused at points.

Overall I loved this book and it definitely lived up to the hype. It's a new comfort book for me and I highly recommend it!

Some more of my fave quotes:

“There was something just so reassuring about books. They had beginnings and middles and ends, and if you didn't like a part, you could skip to the next chapter. If someone died, you could stop on the last page before, and they'd live on forever. Happy endings were definite, evils defeated, and the good lasted forever.

“I didn't need to be fixed. I just needed...to be reminded that I was human.

“There was a gap between early twenties and late twenties that only people existing in bodies in their late twenties understood. You could still fight god, but you'd have to ice your knees afterward.

“I didn't find out who I wanted to be until I was almost 40. You have to try on a lot of shoes until you find some you like walking in. Never apologize for that.

An apartment with a magical aspect to it that allows you to travel through time? Sign me up

4.5 stars

This book was so easy to adore. it was distinctively emotional, bittersweet and so enchanting. Loved the premise as idk why but It was giving 13 going on 30 vibes (for me somehow) mainly bc of the magical realism, nyc and maybe the romance aspect to it but not like it of course* It played out like a 2000s rom com movie in my head and i couldn’t get enough. This wasn’t just a story about romance but about grief and embracing the change in finding yourself.

Clementine- I found her character mostly relatable in more ways than one. Even more when it came to her fear of change, feeling lost as a 20 something year old who is well established in her career yet struggles with letting go and figuring out what she wants in life. Currently, she’s a success in what she does in the publishing business in NYC—seemingly content with her job and mourning the loss of her aunt. But one day, she moves into the apartment she inherited from her and it somehow allows her to slip through a specific moment in timeseven years forward and seven years back the invisible string theory was so apparent here

iwan- I was enamored with him and the chef that he is. The way this man was passionate about the food he cooks in the most meaningful way and believes in the connection between our memories playing a significant role in our love for food—swoon 💘 The banter and cozy chemistry between him and clementine had me grinning and kicking my feet. also, the pet name he had for her, I usually don’t like them but this one I didn’t mind it was so cute

It was bittersweet to watch their journey. From being complete strangers that shared intimate parts of themselves with each other—to what became of them. I also enjoyed seeing them chase their own moons (book reference) and embracing change as that was so hard initially to accept considering the time slip.

Now the grief, it was fleshed out beautifully without being overwhelming which usually is the case with most books.

my lack of rounding up to 5 stars is because I felt like we weren’t given enough scenes in the past between them like there wasn’t enough build up and a lack of structure with the time jump. idk about anyone else but i definitely wanted MORE. Although, in my heart its 5 and more stars for how it made me feel as I was left tearing up at the last 10% 🥹 so if you want a cozy heartfelt book that’ll give you all the feelsread this and I hope you adore it as I did ❤️

"Sometimes the people you loved left you halfway through a story. Sometimes they left you without a goodbye. And, sometimes, they stayed around in little ways."

In The Seven Year Slip, Clementine is trying to rebuild her life after a year filled with loss and heartache. She’s following a plan—a way to protect her heart: focus on work, find stable love, and cling to her dreams. But when she unexpectedly meets a man in her late aunt’s apartment, everything changes. He’s charming, kind, and someone she could easily fall for—if not for one impossible detail: he’s from seven years in her past, and she’s living in his future. As their bond deepens, Clementine must confront the reality of their situation and consider whether love can truly transcend time, or if it’s all about finding the right moment.

This book was an unexpected treasure, one that I didn’t just read—I felt. It’s not just a love story- it’s an exploration of personal growth, of letting go of the past, and of stepping into a future you never quite saw coming. This was my first Ashley Poston book and it did not disappoint at all! Her writing is so enchanting and immersive I devoured this in 24 hours even when I should’ve been studying for my finals. I’m so glad I picked this up, even though I wasn’t sure I’d connect with a story that straddles magical realism. But this book surprised me. It left me teary-eyed and full of emotion, and it will stay with me for a long time.

"I didn't need to be fixed. I just needed...to be reminded that I was human."

Clementine is a character whose emotions, decisions, and growth feel incredibly authentic, making her journey through grief, self-discovery, and the messiness of life one that I could truly relate to. I saw myself in her struggles, her growth, and in her quiet moments of vulnerability. It’s rare to connect with a character so fully, but Clementine’s story captivated me, and I found myself rooting for her from the very first page.

Her grief over losing her aunt is raw and deeply affecting. It’s messy and painful, and it doesn’t follow a neat timeline. I felt every moment of her heartbreak, and I watched as she gradually allowed herself to heal—not by fixing herself, but by learning how to exist in a world that feels different without the people you love. There’s a beauty in that process, and the author captured it with such tenderness.

“Nothing lasts forever. Not the good things, not the bad. So just find what makes you happy, and do it for as long as you can.

What really stood out to me was how poignant it was to see Clementine come to the realisation that it’s okay to let go of dreams and paths that no longer fit who you are. Her journey of self-discovery—especially in relation to her career—felt so empowering. The moment she accepts that she has the power to define her own life, on her own terms, was one of the most inspiring and liberating parts of the book. It’s a reminder that we’re allowed to evolve and change, to walk away from what doesn’t serve us, and that true growth comes when we make space for new possibilities.

"He was an adventure. One I suddenly knew I wanted to take."

Iwan is the kind of character you fall for without even trying. He has an effortless warmth to him, a kindness that’s impossible to resist. The way he loves—through food, through gestures, through his patient, unspoken understanding of Clementine—made my heart ache in the best possible way! His charm is infectious, but it’s his quiet depth, his dreams, and his unshakable belief in the power of love that truly won me over.

What stood out to me the most about Iwan was how much his story unfolds, not just in the present, but across the seven years they are separated by time. Watching him chase his dreams and seeing how his future eventually intersects with Clementine’s is a beautiful testament to how the right person enters your life at the right time. I loved that we got to see him grow, to witness how his passions evolve, and how he stays true to the heart of who he is.

"That was love, wasn’t it? It wasn’t just a quick drop—it was falling, over and over again, for your person. It was falling as they became new people. It was learning how to exist with every new breath. It was uncertain and it was undeniably hard, and it wasn’t something you could plan for. Love was an invitation into the wild unknown, one step at a time together."

This book centres around a unique romance between Clementine and Iwan, where Clementine is living seven years in the past when Iwan is in the present. The time difference adds a fascinating complexity to their relationship as they navigate the challenge of loving someone who isn't in the same time. The dynamic between them is anything but conventional, filled with longing and the uncertainty of what might be.

While I loved their story, I did wish for a bit more of a slow build between them. It didn’t quite sit right with me how quickly they fell in love over the course of a weekend. The instant chemistry is undeniable, but I felt a deeper connection could have developed if we’d seen their relationship evolve more gradually. Still, this didn’t take away from the strength of their bond.

The undeniable chemistry between them was impossible to ignore. Despite the time between them, their love felt natural and fated—like they were always meant to find each other. Their connection kept me invested in their story, and I found myself rooting for them from start to finish.

"Isn't it strange how the world works sometimes? It's never a matter of time, but a matter of timing."

This book is a tender exploration of love, loss, and how life brings us to the people we need when we least expect it. Clementine and Iwan’s journey, though touched by magical realism, feels raw and deeply human. It’s about healing, rediscovery, and finding the courage to love again. Their connection captivated me from the very start, and watching their journey unfold was both beautiful and emotional. Ashley Poston’s writing is immersive, and by the end, I was left with a heart full of emotion, reminded of just how unpredictable and extraordinary love can be.

It’s a beautiful reminder that love doesn’t always unfold according to a plan—it’s about finding the right moment, even when it seems impossible. And when that moment comes, it is always worth the leap. 🍋

˖⁺‧my review:
LITTLE SPOILERS AHEAD

the seven year slip is a beautiful story where past meets the future, where present meets the present and where Clementine meets Iwan🧡

i read the seven year slip for at least 2 times, and it was one of my favorites of 2023. it’s a heartwarming, exciting and comforting book.

i love the chemistry between clementine and iwan. their journey of falling in love and finding each other outside of the apartment is definitely a story worth reading. i love how they grow throughout the book, how their hobbies turn into to something bigger, and how they discover their passion in different ways.

“he always says food brings people together, and that’s really what i love about it.

every moment in the apartment was truly magical. i remember reading the book for the first time, being so confused about the whole time-traveling experience.
i like the writing and how the author describes feelings. my favorite one was:

“…Like someone waiting to be asked. you can just dance, Lemon. You can take the lead.
and you’ll follow?
to the moon and back.

the same moments were so different for both iwan and lemon. it was interesting to follow clementine, and her past & present. she knew how the story is ending (at the moment) but she’d still go back to the 4th floor, apartment B4, just to have another moment together

apartment i love how this was the safe place for everyone. like actually for everyone.

˖⁺ħqܴdzٱ:
“if you don’t fit in, fool everyone until you do.

“she also said to keep your passport renewed, to pair red wines with meats and whites with everything else, to find work that is fulfilling to your heart as well as your head, to never forget to fall in love whenever you can find it because love is nothing if not a matter of thinking, and to chase the moon.

“because anytime you met here, anyone the apartment let you find, could never stay. no one in this apartment ever stayed, no one ever would.

”why was i still here alone, on this couch, listening to the sounds of a city that kept moving forward, and forward, and forward, while i still mourned somewhere in the past?

“You could never be a bad idea, Lemon.
but what if you are? she thought

“…nothing lasts forever. not the good things, not the bad.

This one has become my new favorite!

Infinite stars...😭⭐️˾️

I'm don't personally believe in love or happily ever afters (despite my passion for reading all the romance novels that exist), I didn't expect a romance book to have such a impact on me. The way the author portrayed the chemistry between the characters was absolutely beautiful! She brought their emotions to life in a way that made me feel everything they were experiencing!

The story was absolutely heartwarming!her journey through self-discovery and leaving behind her past sad experiences and moving forward was incredibly relatable!

“You could never be a bad idea, Lemon.

is it okay if i say that i liked the vibes even though i'm still confused as to what i just read 😭 i'm not even sure about my feelings rn. i quite liked it, and a few scenes made me deeply sad too. it was so well written that you can actually feel what the characters are feeling.

the magical apartment that takes you seven years forward, seven years backward concept was so good & unique, and ngl i love these types of books. one where you've met a person in the past but don't know them in the present, or different timelines.

 Iwan & Lemon

James Iwan Ashton is such a well-written character, and i'm all sorts of hot for his present self. As well as Clementine West. I seriously love both of their characters, how they both found themselves. we got Iwan's past self, and i absolutely adore him because those past scenes in the kitchen where he cooked for her and they danced & kissed? LOVE IT.

“It was good to see you again, Lemon.
- i screamed istg

i just wish it was a little clearer about what everything actually meant for Iwan (his own pov about the past). aside from the taxi scene, we never got to know much about what Iwan saw, and i'm still left with lots of questions, not sure if i'll even get answers to them either. i was kind of getting a little bored at the start until Iwan made his entry 🤭 and it was predictable too! nvm i'll definitely reread it!
