A deadly international mission reunites a sexy Black Ops, Inc. hero and his sizzling former love in Cindy Gerard's seductive romantic thriller.
A red-hot attraction... Twelve years of chasing bad guys didn't erase beautiful Sophie Baylor from Wyatt Savage's memory. If he had another chance, he'd never let her leave. So when she tracks him down from El Salvador and begs for help, he doesn't ask questions -- he just goes.
Starts with a terrifying threat... Sophie is grateful her daughter survived a kidnapping attempt, but she won't forgive herself until the girl who was mistakenly abducted is safe. Wyatt is the only man brave enough to take on the mysterious terrorists behind the crime; and the one irresistible man she wishes she had never let go.
...and unleashes an unforgettable adventure Sophie knows Central America's steamy jungles and sticky politics better than anyone. Yet she refuses to hide in fear. Then she becomes the enemy's number-one target. Wyatt lost her once, and he won't lose her again -- even if he has to fight, kill, or die to save her.
The only thing Cindy had in mind when she started writing her first book was finishing it. The issue of actually selling it came much later. Only after she made that life-altering first sale did she realize that one book would never be enough. Now, over 20 books and numerous awards later, Cindy laughingly admits that she can barely remember life before...well, was there life before writing?
Actually, yes there was, and still is. A professional career woman, Cindy is a trainer for the Iowa Department of Human Services, a position she states is both challenging and rewarding. "Human Services is a front-line, real-life event. Everything about the job is immediate, from serving families in crisis, to assisting staff with difficult situations, to meeting tension-fraught deadlines."
Cindy's career has taught her much about the human condition, its frailties, its strengths, and its spirit. The evocative emotions that pour from the pages of her books are a reflection of some of her work experiences. Her writing celebrates life's richness and trials, offering a wide range of emotions ¡ª hope and elation, anger and indecision, laughter and, of course, love. And, according to her readers, her powerful love scenes run the gamut from steamy to tender to lusty to just plain fun.
Cindy's writing has netted her spots on bestseller lists, numerous RT nominations and awards, the Colorado Romance Writers Award of Excellence, a National Reader's Choice Award and two RITA nominations.
Between writing and working full time you wouldn't think Cindy would have much time for anything else. And while she does find her work and her writing rewarding, there does have to be more. Cindy has more. Much more. She is happily married to the perfect man. Tom's a cowboy, ladies!
Yes, even Iowa has its share of that saddle-straddling, Wrangler-wearing species who love their horses almost as much as they love their women. As a matter of fact, recently a whole herd of Texans gathered at the Gerard "Ranch" to treat their little ones to real horseback rides. Go figure.
Cindy has a passion for pink depression glass ¡ª she always has her eye out for the special piece to add to her collection. Cindy's down time often takes the form of the classic "busman's holiday." She loves to read and most of all, she loves to read at their summer place, a cabin in the woods on Lake Kabetogama in northern Minnesota.
Both Tom and Cindy enjoy gardening and have recently expanded their annual beds into a perennial garden. Cindy says she can hardly wait for spring and the promise of all that reawakening and the colorful blooms.
In addition to the horses, the Gerards have two dogs, Ellie and Boomer, who pretty much get anything they want. Tom and Cindy have one son, Kyle, who, after years of keeping them in suspense, found Eileen, the perfect woman.
³Ò±ð°ù²¹°ù»å¡¯²õ Black Ops series is one of the very best in military romantic suspense, and Risk No Secrets is a gripping, top-notch, action-packed thrill ride that delivers an adrenaline rush and emotional punch that stays with you for a while after reading it.
Wyatt ¡°Papa Bear¡± Savage is weary from a violent career as an operative in the CIA and current Black Ops, Inc. and has begun questioning what he wants out of life and his future, when he gets a call from a friend from his past, the woman who got away, who¡¯s in desperate need of his help. Sophie Baylor Weber was the love of Wyatt¡¯s life, but he hasn¡¯t seen her since she married his best friend and former CIA partner, Hugh Weber, twelve years before. Now Sophie needs Wyatt to help recover a kidnapped child in El Salvador. As the two search dangerous jungles and slums with other members of the BOI team in a desperate race to save the child, old feelings resurface and long buried passion ignites between them.
I loved sweet, strong, steadfast Papa Bear, and admired Sophie¡¯s steely determination, but there were times that they both drove me crazy with their refusal to admit their feelings and denial of what was blatantly staring them right in the face.
It was great to get updates on the other members of the BOI team, especially my favorite couple, Johnny *dreamy sigh* and Crystal, and there¡¯s a satisfying secondary romance between Black Ops, Inc. leader Nathan Black and Dr. Juliana Flores.
There were lots of intense, action-loaded sequences and shoot-outs, uber nasty bad guys, and exciting plot twists. I had a suspicion about the real villain all along, so I wasn¡¯t completely shocked, but it¡¯s still a startling, emotional surprise.
Risk No Secrets is another thrilling read in the addictive Black Ops...man I love this series! Johnny Duane Reed is still by far my favorite BOI badass of the bunch, and he and Crystal are my favorite couple, so it will take a heck of a lot for Ms. Gerard to outdo my favorite of the series, . Although, I do think there is great potential for Luke ¡°Doc¡± Colter¡¯s story (up next) and possibly something in store for Mean Joe Green and Stephanie (hopefully) at some point in the future?! 5 stars!
Sophie Baylor Weber contacts Wyatt Savage for help when someone tries to abduct her 12-year old daughter, Hope and her friend Lola. She's running a school in San Salvador, El Salvador, a hotbed for gang violence and recent kidnappings. Wyatt has a history with Sophie, who married his best friend, Hugh twelve years ago. She's still the one that got away and he'll do anything to help her free the abducted child.
This one grabbed my attention right away and really never let go. The tension is so off the charts that I had to put the book down to breathe now and then. These were brutal men behind the abduction and the team was seriously at risk. I loved getting Wyatt's history and learning why he gained the nickname Papa Bear. While I admired what Sophie stood for, I wasn't thrilled with how she handled the two best friends. Wyatt deserved a stronger commitment, especially after everything he risked on her behalf.
Despite my issues with Sophie, I very much enjoyed the story. It was exciting, heartbreaking, funny and romantic (Nate has some great moments in this one). Still loving this series.
Twelve long years ago, Wyatt Savage and his best friend, Hugh Weber, met Sophie Baylor who was their Spanish Language instructor as they were learning the language in preparation for their Special Ops work in South America. Both men were instantly attracted to her, and she to them, and they pursued her relentlessly, each on his own. She found herself in love with both of them, but when Hugh, the handsome, outgoing one of the two proposed, she accepted and hoped she¡¯d made the right choice.
Now, all these years later, Wyatt gets a call from Sophie who needs his help rescuing a kidnapped child. Hugh is away on a mission and can¡¯t be reached so Wyatt is her only hope for getting the child back.
Wyatt was a little concerned about working so closely with Sophie, because as soon as he heard her voice on the phone, he realized he was still in love with her. But she needed him, a child needed him, so he put his feelings aside and left on a mission to do whatever he had to in order to save the innocent young girl, and then hightail it out of Sophie¡¯s life. But his plans took a sudden change of direction when he got there and learned that Hugh and Sophie had divorced two years earlier. Now, all bets were off and he wasn¡¯t about to lose her again.
What I didn¡¯t like
There is actually very little about this book that I didn¡¯t like. The only thing that really stood out was that for a short while ¨C less than a few pages ¨C it just seemed like too much back story was being given. The relationships of characters from earlier books were explained along with the missions those characters were on when they met, and for a follower of the series, it wasn¡¯t needed. That said, I know that authors do this to help new readers be able to pick up the story and understand what has happened in the past, this felt too ¡°educational¡± and didn¡¯t flow well. In fact, I don¡¯t feel that it wasn¡¯t necessary at all, because the couples being revisited had a very small role in this book, so those scenes felt out of place to me. Again, unnecessary because none of those things were pertinent to this story.
What I liked:
Sophie and Wyatt were really on the same page when it came to the dynamics of their friendship/relationship. There¡¯s wasn¡¯t a lot of misunderstanding, in fact, things were pretty clear. This saved a lot of pages in the book from becoming victims of the too stupid to live moments when neither person is willing to talk about it their feelings.
I love Cindy ³Ò±ð°ù²¹°ù»å¡¯²õ writing style, the way she draws you in, creates emotional ties between you ¨C the reader ¨C and the characters. As with all of her heroes, I really cared about Wyatt. My heart broke for him when he realized, all those years ago, that he didn¡¯t stand a chance with Sophie. Wyatt was in love with Sophie, and was pretty sure that she felt the same for him, but when it came down to it, she chose Hugh. Wyatt knew that his feelings for Sophie would never change, but he wasn¡¯t about to stick around and make things difficult on all three of them, so Wyatt quietly drifted out of their lives, figuring he¡¯d never see either of them again.
I think Sophie is a great character. She¡¯s strong, honorable, and always ready to do the right thing, regardless of whether it will result in her own happiness or not. She¡¯s not an operative, but she¡¯s not a wimp, either, and wasn¡¯t about to be left behind when the men went into action. She never had any real ¡±too stupid to live¡± moments, and when she really shouldn¡¯t go somewhere or do something, she recognized that and stayed behind. I appreciated that, even though I did feel like the guys allowing her to go along as often as they did was not in keeping with the typical alpha male mentality.
It was such a pleasure to revisit Nate Black and Juliana Flores and see how their relationship was developing. I¡¯m very hopeful that they will have their own book eventually and a real chance for a happily ever after. After all they do for everyone else, Nate and Juliana really deserve this for themselves. We also got to spend some quality time with Johnny D. and Crystal Reed which was a real delight. Johnny D. is so smart, so funny, and so sexy that I find myself grinning from ear to ear whenever he is on the page. Crystal is so cute in the way she handles him, letting him think he¡¯s in charge, but at the same time letting him know she¡¯s only humoring him.
Over all, Risk No Secrets is another great addition to the series, with characters worth caring about and a storyline that was believable. The only problem is that now I¡¯m stuck waiting for the next book, again.
A lot of wasted potential in the romance part with this one. Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage was such a sweet Georgia country boy hero (calling women "sugar" and "darlin"--usually I don't go for that but for him it worked) that I wanted to know more about him personally and wanted more scenes with him and the heroine (Sophie) that I felt a little shortchanged. The plot was just okay for me. Sophie was a woman who Wyatt loved (in his heart) and lost 12 years ago to his best buddy and fellow CIA agent Hugh. Wyatt stepped aside for the flashier, handsomer, more dangerous Hugh when I think with more effort he could have won Sophie (who was their Spanish instructor) for himself. But loyal-to-a-fault Wyatt did the gentlemanly thing and stepped aside while Hugh swept Sophie off her feet with a lot of flash and charm.
So out of the blue 12 years later, Wyatt (now out of the CIA and working for a private Black Ops agency), gets a phone call from Sophie in El Salvador asking him for his help. Seems her daughter's best friend has been kidnapped and held for ransom by one of the lawless gangs in the country. Since Hugh is 'unavailable', can Wyatt please help her? Of course good guy Wyatt is eager to help, and is on the next plane to El Salvador. He and Sophie reconnect (this time physically) when Wyatt learns that Hugh is out of the picture--or is he? With the help of his fellow "BOIs" (Black Ops, Inc.) (Gabe--, Johhny--, Rafe--, Doc, and Joe) Wyatt and company try to track and rescue the young kidnapped girl before time runs out.
What I loved about this book (besides the character of "Papa Bear") was the flashback scenes of how Sophie met Hugh and Wyatt (Sophie was a Spanish instructor and Hugh and Wyatt were CIA agents taking her class). I would have loved to read more of that, and I felt that CG didn't go far enough into it. I could feel that Sophie was conflicted over her feelings for the flashier, handsomer Hugh and the steady, reliable Wyatt and married Hugh because he just sort of overwhelmed her.
I also enjoyed the hot scenes of Wyatt and Sophie together, without the other BOIs around and without them actively looking for the young kidnap victim. I realize that there couldn't be too many of those scenes because Sophie and Wyatt had no time to waste--they had to rescue this little girl within 3 days, I think--so they just couldn't just lie around in bed "reconnecting" and talking, but *sigh* those scenes were so good, getting inside Wyatt's head and what he felt for Sophie, that I just wanted more!
As far as the suspense aspect and who the villains were...the villain was a villain, nothing that really made my skin crawl too much (maybe I'm immune?) and CG tries to make you believe that a certain someone is in on the kidnapping plot, but I knew deep down that someone else was involved, and for once I was proven right! There was the requisite showdown near the end, where just about everyone's life was at stake, but no real surprises at the outcome.
I did enjoy seeing all the BOIs again, including leader Nathan and his lady love Julianna (who finally got their act together--sweet) and I especially enjoyed revisiting Crystal and sexy Johnny Duane, Rafe, Gabe, Doc, Mean Joe...did I leave anyone out? Lots of camaraderie and good, but dangerous times with this group.
So fans of this series, yes, you'll want to read this one, even if IMO it's not the best one. Nothing can top Johnny's story () for me. It's still a good story, you'll love "Papa Bear" and want to see him happy, you'll marvel at his bravery and the sacrifice he's willing to make for love, and you'll enjoy his HEA. So yes, I'll say I was satisfied and entertained with this story. 4 stars.
When someone attempts to kidnap her daughter, Sophie Baylor is thankful that they did not succeed. Unfortunately, her daughter's best friend was taken by mistake. Not being able to reach her ex-husband, Sophie contacts a friend from the past, Wyatt Savage. Wyatt will do anything for Sophie. Twelve years ago he did not pursue her because she was in love with his best friend. Now she is single and needs his help. Wyatt contacts his buddies at Black Ops, Inc. to help him find a little girl that is being held hostage in El Salvador. He must also keep Sophie out of the line of fire at the same time.
This story hooked me right away. It was fast moving and hard to put down, even though the man behind the kidnappings was rather obvious. There was a secondary romance in this book. I have been waiting to read more about this couple since the first book, but I thought their story could have been better. My rating: 4 Stars.
Opening Line: The old cargo van caught Sophie's attention the moment she stepped outside the Baylor Middle School's double front doors."
Yippee kiy yay¡ Welcome to the fifth instalment of Cindy ³Ò±ð°ù²¹°ù»å¡¯²õ fast paced and thrilling Black-Ops series. Fans won¡¯t be disappointed as this is another great ride, filled with action, adventure, passion and top notch writing. Gerard whisks us away to yet another exotic South American location where we engage in ridiculously exciting shootouts, multiple explosions and the occasional kidnapping. Oh and then theres that little helicopter thingy. Somehow our newest couple; Sophie and Wyatt ¡°Papa Bear¡± Savage also get time for some sweet loving, and with their substantial back story (complete with flashbacks) you¡¯ll feel particularly invested. Of course the entire wise-cracking team is back for this mission (loved catching up with them) and with a charming secondary romance taking root there was plenty going on here to hold my interest.
After twelve years of chasing bad guys around the globe Wyatt Savage is bone tired and beginning to get a little worried about his humanity. However when the woman he loved, lost and was never able to forget tracks him down from El Salvador he doesn¡¯t hesitate to jump the first flight and rush to her rescue. Now why her husband isn¡¯t the one doing the rescuing is a question Wyatt probably should have asked before he left, but he¡¯s never been able to resist Sophie, so answers will have to wait.
Sophie is grateful it wasn¡¯t her daughter taken in the kidnapping, but she won¡¯t be able to rest until the girl who was mistakenly abducted is returned. Calling Wyatt though may have been a mistake because his arrival has made her realize that she never should have let him go in the first place and with an outrageous ransom demand to pay, unknown terrorists and the entire BOI¡¯s team using her living room as a bachelor pad/mission headquarters, life just got mighty complicated.
This is another great read from a fantastic series that I can¡¯t recommend enough. Wyatt as our hero is lovely, closing ranks as another one of my literary boyfriends with his honourable, angsty and believable character. Even with the amount of special ops stuff going down he never goes OTT and Gerard never gets too technical either even though it¡¯s obvious she knows her guns. I also liked her less obvious choice of having the kidnapped child not be Sophie¡¯s as it allowed for a more believable romance to develop. The flashbacks were another fun aspect; seeing Sophie make the choice between Wyatt or Hugh, then witnessing Wyatt¡¯s heartache as he steps aside and watches his best friend marry the woman he loves. Sigh. And even though you¡¯ll guess the bad guy early on the actual outcome still surprised me. All completed here of course with ³Ò±ð°ù²¹°ù»å¡¯²õ signature poker playing ending.
Now though with only 2 single BOI¡¯s left I¡¯m starting to get a little antsy. Hopefully we¡¯ll see some hunky new men introduced to Black-Ops soon or maybe Gerard will thrill us with another awesome spin off?
"He'd been in the country for roughly 2 hours. So far he'd gotten caught in a terrorist attack, killed 2 men, saved a mother and a child and bled all over his favourite shirt. And it was still more than an hour before noon. A typical day in the life of Wyatt Savage"
This is a wonderful series that is hot romance and nail biting suspense and delivers with each and every book. I have found myself looking forward to each new book because I am invested in these characters and want to see them all get their HEA.
Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage has gone home to the family farm in Virginia to make some decisions about his future. While there Sophie Baylor Weber, wife of his best friend from his CIA days, calls and desperately needs his help. She runs a school in El Salvador and her daughter has been the target of a kidnapping, only they didn't get Hope, Sophie's daughter, they got Lola, her friend instead. She can't reach Hugh Weber and is frantic. Wyatt drops everything and goes to her aid, even though he hasn't seen either Sophie or Hugh since their wedding 12 years ago. Doesn't matter to Wyatt, Sophie was the one who got away and he has never loved anyone the way he loved her.
Take your choice for which nasty group has taken Lola, they all specialize in drugs, human trafficking and kidnap for ransom. Who is behind this and why is the suspense story. I didn't figure it out and that is very good. How Wyatt and Sophie unravel the mess that is their past and their present to have a future is the romance.
When asked I have always said that I love all these super sexy men but Gabe would always be my favourite. Wyatt didn't quite knock Gabe off that number one spot but he came very very close to it!
Although Wyatt was a warrior he was also a sweet guy. Sophie was a strong woman who was desperately trying to get back a young girl that had been kidnapped - the kidnappers had made a mistake in grabbing the wrong girl, they were actually after her daughter. She had no luck in finding her ex husband so turned to wyatt for help. Wyatt had held a torch for Sophie for 12 years and had the opportunity to have a relationship with her but his best friend was also interested in her so Wyatt stepped aside believing that is what Sophie wanted. He had tried to stay in contact with them both but just found it too painful and hadn't seen them for years. As soon as Wyatt heard Sophie needed help he downed sticks and went off to help her. Wyatt was still besotted with Sophie and it seemed that she was beginning to realise that she had picked the wrong guy 12 years ago and that she should have married Wyatt. Everything in their relationship seemed to be going well until the ex husband suddenly turned up and wasn't too happy to find Sophie had turned to Wyatt in his absence. I won't go into too many details as I don't want to spoil it but towards the end I did feel like grabbing Wyatt by the shoulders and giving him a good shaking and telling him to stop being such a gentleman and fight for what he wanted!
Everyone keeps raving about Doc so can't wait to read his story.
Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage is the story this time. Southern boy, sweet, loyal and handsome. Twelve years ago Wyatt and his buddy Hugh take a spanish class and Sophie is the teacher. While Sophie is attracted to them both, Hugh's star shines a little bit brighter and she chooses Hugh over Wyatt. Wyatt loved her, but accepts her decision and walks away.
shoot to present day..Sophie is the head of a school in Central America and needs the help of Wyatt when a child is kidnapped. Wyatt comes to the rescue and the BOI's join in as usual and the fun begins. Hugh joins in and adds in a surprise element. Then one of the BOI's get shot really badly and my heart stops...
And we get to see Nate and Julianna again (I love these two). I liked Sophie and Wyatt, they both knew how they felt about each other right away. I was afraid that circumstances were going to keep them apart toward the end when a surprise twist happens that i didn't expect. Wyatt walks away and my heart breaks.... *tear*
This book kept my interest till the very end, it was emotional and fun and made me afraid at times what would happen next....love it!
Average romantic suspense. Nothing unique. Special forces friend is asked to help when a girl is kidnapped.
STORY BRIEF: Twelve years ago Wyatt and Hugh worked for the CIA and took an adult Spanish class taught by Sophie. They both fell in love with her and she them. But Hugh was the one she married. Now Sophie lives in El Salvador running a middle school. One of her students was kidnapped. Hugh is out of the area. She calls Wyatt for help. Wyatt no longer works for the CIA, but he works for Black Ops, Inc. a private firm doing special-forces-type jobs. He still loves Sophie.
REVIEWER¡¯S OPINION: Most of the story takes place in El Salvador with the kidnapping being solved at the end of the book. It felt too much like other romantic suspense books. Nothing stood out for me. It was ok. But nothing surprised or delighted me. The characters were like others in this genre. The sex scenes needed more hotness and sensuality. There was no spark. There wasn¡¯t enough relationship development.
My favorite part of the book was the casual banter and fun insults among the guys. There was also a very good action scene in the beginning with Sophie and Wyatt in the middle of an airport shooting.
I have kind of a logic issue problem. Sophie is a school teacher. Why does she go to dangerous places with Wyatt as he investigates? He¡¯s going to bad-guy bars asking if anyone recognizes a picture of a fellow bad guy. Shooting starts. They want to kill him and rape her. He has to save them both. Not a big problem, but it came to mind.
In the beginning of their El Salvador relationship (and later in the book as well), Sophie is not honest with Wyatt about her feelings and her recent past. Wyatt still loves her but he doesn¡¯t let her know ¨C for valid reasons. Then he makes incorrect assumptions about Sophie which adds some conflict. This kind of thing is common in romance novels and not the most entertaining for me. But it was not used too much here, so it wasn¡¯t too bad.
The back story about what happened twelve years ago is told in three separate flashbacks. I would have preferred the entire flashback be done in one section together ¨C not three sections. But again this wasn¡¯t as bad as some other books.
DATA: Story length: 388 pages. Swearing language: strong, including religious swear words. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: 8. Total number of sex scene pages: 16. Setting: current day El Salvador and Adel, Georgia. Twelve years earlier Hampton, Virginia. Copyright: 2010. Genre: romantic suspense.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading the fifth edition to the Black Ops Saga. Previous characters and updates were mentioned, and there were two romances going on. The primary story involved Wyatt "Pappa Bear" Savage (former CIA turned Black Ops) and Sophie Baylor (the love of his life). In the beginning, there were a few flashbacks as to how Wyatt and Sophie met. They had a connection, but when Wyatt's best friend, Hugh Weber (CIA), asked Sophie to marry him, Wyatt backed away. If only....
Twelve years later, Sophie, a school director in El Salvador, contacts Wyatt to help find an abducted child. Their relationship was complicated. Feelings were there, but both tried very hard not to acknowledge them. When Wyatt found out Sophie had been divorced for two years....well now.
The secondary story picked up where another book in the series left off between the CEO of Black Ops, Nathan Black, and Juliana (Dr. in Argentina). I was touched by their continued saga, and enjoyed reading about them.
All the Black Ops, Inc--BOI's--participated in the search for the missing child: Gabe "Archangel" Jones, Raphael "Choirboy" Mendoza, Luke "Doc Holiday" Colter, and "Mean" Joe Green followed by Johnny Reed and Crystal (tinkerbell).
Nice suspense. A lot of searching and corruption in El Salvador. Lots of shoot outs. The bad guy was truly rotten. Nicely written with occasional funny moments between the BOI's bantering.
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars!!! Loved it! Gerard's characters jump off the page and into your heart. Each warrior is so special that you can't wait until the next book comes out. Talk about a nail biter! From start to finish you were on the edge of your seat. Cindy Gerard really knows how to write a great Romantic Suspense.
Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage has only had one true love in his life and she married his best friend. When she calls in need of his warrior assistance, to help find a kidnapped little child, he can't say no.
Sophie Baylor is desperate for help in finding her daughters best friend. She can't get in touch with her ex-husband so she calls her next best option, Wyatt Savage. She wonders if they can fight the attraction that started years before and quickly finds out that she can't even if he can. But a child's life is on the line and they only have so much time to find her.
Wyatt calls in the troops and they frantically search for the stolen child but now that he knows that Sophie is single again he can't fight the magnetic pull he feels for her. But when her ex-husband, his former best friend, shows up and finds them in bed together, the *$@^ just might hit the fan. Will these two former friends be able to look past their own feelings and be able to save the child?
I have read 10 or so Cindy Gerard books in the last 6 months and I feel like I continuously write the same damn thing in each review.
There is a usual outline of how hunky the hero is - how strong the heroine is - how perfect they are together, throw in a few *sigh*'s and then wrap it all up in a little bow of "This book rocked!"
......this book is exactly the same.
I LOVED IT. Seriously, how many ways can I say that before it gets annoying?? I honestly can't help it, the books just rock from start to finish.
Pappa Bear Savage was DREAMY!! A huge hunk of a man that had a heart the size of a.....bear. These men are always high on morals, high on adrenaline, high on honour and high on treating women with the utmost respect and yumminess.
Whenever I am reading a Cindy Gerard book I am either shaking with anticipation or smiling from the emotion between the hero and heroine. And each book is different, new twists, new turns, new emotions, new conflicts. I am never - EVER bored and always left sated.
Honestly, if you are a fan of suspense you really need to read Cindy Gerard.
That used to be my least favorite of Cindy Gerard; it remains my least favorite full story written by her.
I did not care so much for all the reminder of a previous time, when Sophie had been courted by two men and had chosen one, that was not the right one.
The hero is often described as a cuddly papa bear, which means that he had the same attraction potential to me, as say Winnie the pooh. I could not go over that and never managed to really take him for a real flesh and blood man.
Sophie did not manage either to grow on me, even though I understood how her marriage had slowly disintegrated. She seemed too much do-gooder to be very interesting in my eyes.
Can I say that I loved the secondary story and everything that was happening in Argentina more than the primary romance and what was happening in El Salvador?
I don't like love triangles (or love triangles-ish) stories so this one is clearly not one of my favorite. Another thing that spoiled the story for me is that the outcome wasn't a surprise. If not for the side story this book would only get 3 stars from me.
I just didn't buy the romance. The length of time apart and having no contact and her evidently not even having a thought for Wyatt until she needs him to help her. Didn't work for me.
As a huge fan of Romantic Suspense and having read more than I can even remember, I've come to a conclusion... NO ONE does it better than Cindy Gerard! Many may do it well, a few may do it as good but none - no none - can write it better. Whatever topic she attempts- in this case the gangs of San Salvadore - she writes with intelligence, she doesn't bog the reader down with info overload but deftly describes situations with just enough honesty to allow one to understand the horror without totally ravishing the senses. She keeps it real without becoming horrifically graphic. We are educated but not devastated. The romance aspect is also just as superbly written as the suspense each and every time, with that same fine touch that draws burning steam without graphic overkill.
In this installment, we find Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage re-uniting with Sophie, the love of his life and woman who broke his heart when she married his best friend. Divorced now and desperately in need of Wyatt's help, Sophie must face and work through her mistakes all while hunting a kidnapper on a timeline. Sophie, for me, is the weak point in this story as she struggles to be a sympathetic heroine. Wyatt, throughout the "Black Ops" series has been arguably the most beloved and compassionate of the men, so watching him ache for a woman who consciously chose his best friend because he was "flashier", then waiting for her to decide he wasn't so bad after all is almost offensive. His character deserves so much better than being second choice. He should have someone who truly believes the sun rises and sets in him. We never get that from Sophie. Even so... and said again, the story grabs and never lets go until the reader is left gasping for breath and sighing with delight.
I just have to say, Reed is the best!! Every scene he was in, he brought a smile to my face.
¡°What happened?" Wyatt asked Crystal, and stood back so the two of them could come inside out of the oppressive heat.
"Why are you asking her?" Reed thumped past him. "I'm the one on crutches."
"She'll tell me the truth," Wyatt said. "You'll just give me some bullshit story that will end with 'You should see the other guy'."
"You wound me, bro" [Reed]
"He tore his ACL the day before yesterday trying to do a stunt on a skateboard." [Crystal]
"Mendoza dared him." [Luke Colter]
"No one held a gun to the fool's head" [Mendoza]¡± (page 85-86)
Risk No Secrets was so much better then the last book. I thoroughly enjoyed the main characters, side-characters and their stories, the plot, and even the flashbacks. All around great book!
Wyatt and Sophie have a history together. However, they haven't seen each other in twelve years. So when Sophie finds herself in trouble, and in dire need of help, she reaches out and contacts Wyatt 'Pappa Bear' Savage.
Wyatt lost the woman of his dreams once and he doesn't want to loose her again. But when Sophie's ex and Wyatt's former best friend comes back into the picture, Wyatt fears he might just loose Sophie again.
Very intense, but still humorous, book. Risk No Secrets occurs over a time span of three days (not including the epilogue, of course). This is probably my second favorite book in the series to date. The first being Whisper No Lies, I don't think Reed and Crystal's story can be beaten. :)
Onward to Doc Holliday's story, and it's about darn time....
Sophie terkejut setengah mati ketika teman anaknya yg sangat mirip dgn anak angkatnya diculik.
Wyatt dkk belum berhasil menemukan sarang penculikan Lola tsb (walaupun berhasil menemukan anak lainnya).
Fifth in the Black Ops, Inc. romantic suspense series revolving around Nathan Black and his BOIs. The couple focus is on Wyatt Savage and Sophie Baylor with a minor focus on Nate and Juliana's relationship.
My Take Gerard manages to create such different scenarios to introduce her romances. Each of the BOIs has a different background, a different history. Their one commonality is the loyalty and support each man receives from the others. They go all out to protect. Brutal men when needed, gentle and teasing when they can. The world needs more men like them. And fewer of the Hughes.
As the spirited Sophie says: Wyatt's friends are focused, driven, and capable. With heart. She would never say that about her husband's men. Once Hugh and Wyatt were alike. Now, they couldn't be more unlike.
Gerard is good at hiding and teasing us, leading me down the garden path. Making me wonder who had planned this kidnapping. Enough that I suspected and still was surprised at the end.
No end of action and hot, heavy jungle trekking. And more than one rescue. Nice handling when Hugh and Wyatt finally confront each other. Kind of hard to handle a man walking into his [old] bedroom only to find his best friend in bed with his [ex] wife.
The BOIs wreak havoc on Bonilla's operation, completely and totally and I'm surprised they didn't stop to consider the consequences of what they were doing. I can't believe the BOIs spent all that time in the military and never picked up basic first aid. The way they panicked was just not believable.
Omigod!! Mean Joe Green is softening up! He cracked TWO jokes!!
Okay, the tension Gerard is trying for with Montoya isn't working. It's merely irritating as it's too obvious as to Sophie's reaction. To make it believable, Gerard has to have Sophie participating to some extent and Gerard tipped her hand much too early for this to work.
The Story A call out of the blue from a former girlfriend in big trouble. Savage has always loved Sophie, but she chose Hugh Weber, his best friend, a brother, and he can only respect her wishes. He hasn't seen her since he left the CIA and joined Black's BOIs. Hugh, too, has left the CIA and begun his own protection and security service.
Meanwhile, Sophie has also achieved her dream---a quality school providing a good education to poor children in El Salvador. But now someone has kidnapped Lola thinking she was Hope. And Sophie can't find Hugh.
Wyatt is her last hope.
The Characters Sophie Baylor Weber started by teaching Spanish for the State Department where she met Wyatt and Hugh. She slowly worked her way through the educational system until she understood the infrastructure and proved her own abilities so she could achieve her dream of educational parity. Hope is Sophie's adopted daughter and Lola Ramirez is Hope's best friend. Ramona is Lola's mother and works for Sophie. Maris Hoffman is the vice-principal at Baylor.
The 37-year-old Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage was CIA before he joined the BOIs. He's never been married as no women has ever measured up to his memories of Sophie. His family home is in Adel, Georgia and it's been two years since he's been home to visit his momma and daddy---and Margaret Savage is determined to make up for lost time. Annie is his kid sister, married to Jed Cooper and they have a terror of a toddler, Will. Carrie Ginger is an old girlfriend of Wyatt's and momma's got matchmaking on her mind.
Nathan Black commands Black Ops, Inc. They work off the books for the U.S. government. He's friends with Dr. Juliana Flores even as he dreams of more. Johnny Duane and Crystal Reed will be Hope's protection detail to Argentina; Rafe and BJ Mendoza; "Mean" Joe Green is still seeing Stephanie Tompkins, Luke Colter, and Gabe Jones are the rest of the BOIs in this installment.
Diego Montoya is a "handsome coffee baron", wealthy, and very interested in Sophie. He will do anything for her and donates generously to the Baylor School. Vincente Bonilla is absolute scum *naturally!* and is in cahoots with someone who placed the order for the Weber girl's kidnapping. He also heads up one of the biggest criminal gangs in Salvador. Jorge Vega is secretly with Guerrilleros Nacionales and the assistant to the director of San Salvador's Primary Education Board with news for Sophie.
The Cover It's a pinky purple sheer overlay of Wyatt Savage from cheekbones to waist. And all sorts of hard, chiseled muscle concealed and revealed by his white tank top. He's in profile with his head turned towards us. Serious. Intent. Yup, it's Papa Bear all right.
I'm clueless about the title. It's not so much that there are secrets at risk as there are secrets buried in their own subconscious.
Seeing as how I have (for the most part) really enjoyed this series to date, this book was a bit of a let down for me. Wyatt has always been that character I couldn't wait to see fall in love, but I felt like Gerard could have done better than Sophie.
12 years ago, Wyatt stepped aside and watched his best friend (Hugh) marry the woman he has fallen in love with (Sophie). Why? Why did he not fight for her if he loved her so much? I really can't see any man being so altruistic that he'd not only step aside but serve as best man at the wedding. Not one with any cojones, anyway. And he's carried a torch for Sophie all these years, eschewing any relationships that could have made him happy. When Sophie calls him, frantically telling him that her daughter had almost been kidnapped (and another had, mistakenly in her place), he rushes to El Salvador to help rescue the young girl. You see, Sophie can't get in touch with her husband Hugh, so she calls "the next best thing" Wyatt, to the rescue. And I guess that's my biggest problem right there.
Flashback 12 years ago. Wyatt and Hugh are both students in Sophie's Spanish language immersion class. Both are handsome and interesting in their own unique way, and both are hot for Sophie. We see Sophie flirting with the movie-star handsome Hugh. We see Sophie going on a picnic and enjoying some seriously hot kissing with Wyatt. Two weeks after said picnic Hugh suddenly asks her to marry him and she says yes. The scene where Sophie tells Wyatt her decision breaks my heart for "Papa Bear". We hear Sophie's internal dialog where she compares Hugh's good looks to Wyatt's dependability and somehow you just know - she's all about the image and not substance.
Wyatt to the rescue. He comes to El Salvador and is blindsided to realize that Sophie and Hugh are no longer married, haven't been for over 2 years. To say he's hurt that she didn't bother to tell him this is an understatement, but his unrequited love for Sophie propels him to help however he can. He's confused as to why Hugh isn't there to help and Sophie explains that the reason they had divorced is because Hugh had become married to the job, always gone and always seeming to put her 2nd, and I could have telegraphed this one - their daughter last.
The whole "I need to rescue this child or I'll never live down the guilt" angle Sophie had going on got old for me fast. Wyatt and team, along with Sophie who refuses to leave for a safe haven, spend the majority of the book looking for the child. I felt this gave the romance portion of the book the short shaft. Their moments are stolen and all too short, and Sophie never opens up to Wyatt until the veritable end of the book.
And I also felt so sad for Hugh, who does later show up. He's obviously still in love with Sophie and resents Wyatt's presence. Finding the woman you love in bed with your best friend does not lead to hugs and back slaps upon the reunion. Yeah, Hugh made some mistakes, and he made a doozy (spoiler I won't reveal) that has gotten him into a situation he can't really handle, but he did so in the hopes of winning his wife back. I actually enjoyed the scene between Hugh and Sophie arguing over their divorce. She told him he all but ignored their daughter. He told her that once they had adopted Hope, he felt like he was just a third wheel himself. So much anguish that could have been resolved with a little honesty between them.
I'll be honest - the ending sucked for me. Way too quick, wrapped up too neatly and I still didn't feel like Wyatt got what he deserved in this relationship. I'm giving this a 3 star review ONLY because I love and have gotten so much reading pleasure from her in the past.
Book #5 in the Black Ops, Inc. series was good but not great for me. Not every book can be a 5 star read, right? I think I'll take a little break before I hit #6 and #7. While I love the authenticity and action of this romantic suspense series, the characterization has become slightly stale, particularly when the romantic leads repeatedly gush over each other in their minds. I get that each BOI warrior has integrity and courage, and each woman he's paired with is beautiful and strong. I think I'd like more variety in that formula. However, I do applaud Ms. Gerard for the unique plot she develops for each book.
The hero of Risk No Secrets is Wyatt Savage (great name!), a compact Southern boy who likes to call women "sugar". Back when he was training for the CIA, he had the hots for his Spanish instructor, Sophie Baylor. Unfortunately, his handsome buddy Hugh also found Sophie "caliente". When Hugh married Sophie, Wyatt played the loyal friend and tried to support them both. But he never stopped holding the candle for Sophie.
Fast forward over twelve years, and Sophie's now a teacher in El Salvador. Similar to the BOIs, Hugh became a gun for hire after retiring from the CIA. Unlike the sweet, loving BOIs, Hugh has grown cold and dark from the work. Sophie wanted to adopt a daughter and Hugh didn't, increasing their conflict and leading to divorce. When a kidnapping attempt puts Sophie's daughter in danger and she can't find Hugh, she calls Wyatt.
Of course Wyatt comes to help, bringing his BOI entourage. They go about the frustrating business of tracking down the kidnapped girl, but keep coming upon dead ends. I thought the story picked up with the arrival of Hugh. Sophie's suddenly embroiled in a love triangle.
Warriors, she thought, and felt her heart swell with pride. Pride for the man Wyatt was. Pride, even, in Hugh, because he'd apparently dug deep and found that part of himself she'd once respected and admired. These men had been friends once. Brothers. And no matter that she and Hugh had gone separate ways, she had never wanted to come between them.
We're blessed with a little Johnny and Crystal Reed to lighten things up.
"I know a way that you could make me smile." Johnny tilted his head and grinned his best come-hither grin. Crystal's fingers continued to fly over the computer keys. "That's because you're easy." "You say that like it's a bad thing."
Sidenote: I'm curious how one could use the word oenophylgia in a Scrabble game. How do you create an 11 letter word like that with 7 tiles? Also, remind me never to visit El Salvador. I'm not a big fan of humidity and it sounds hellishly hot down there!
Anywho, Cindy Gerard is a fantastic author and I'm very glad Buggy has recommended this series to me. I definitely recommend it!
I wanted to love this book. Wyatt was everything good in a hero¡ tough, smart, sensitive, protective, sweet. However, all of that was lost on Sophie. I couldn't understand why a strong alpha guy like Wyatt would make himself walk away from the woman he loved, and not just once. I hated Sophie for choosing Hugh early on, but I could understand her being blindsided by his flash and dazzle. I was disappointed in Wyatt for wanting to step away from Sophie simply because Hugh still loved her, and I was extremely disappointed when he left her with Diego, a man he couldn't stand, because he thought Diego could offer her things he couldn't. Wyatt's insecurities and "I'm not good enough for her" were so overdone. I did like the storyline and thought that overall it was a decent addition to the series. The worst part, for me, was Hugh's craziness at the end. IMO, it would have been better if he had just come back into the picture as Sophie's ex, even one who might want her back. Turning him into a traitor, and one a little bit off his rocker, who betrays his ex-wife and his ex-best friend was a bit much.

Loved Wyatt "papa bear" Savage! The action and suspense, as usual, was great! The romance, heartbreaking and sweet...sad that they lost all those years because Wyatt decided to be a stand-up guy! :(...but that's why everyone loves him so much!
My only gripe...and it actually has nothing to do with Wyatt's and Sophie's actual story...was the side story of Nate and Julianna. I really wish they would have gotten their own book! I kind of feel like they were cheated a little bit since we only got bits and pieces of their story in a couple books. Regardless, i'm really happy that they finally got their HEA.
Omg!!!!'gross..... Love triangle . Stupid stupid Sophie....I just wanted to choke her. I hate hate hate weak men. Did not finish this crap. I really would love to give this book half freaking star. Am starting to think mAybe my standards are just too high. Karen Rose....ohhhh how I miss your series and Suzanne brockman ....boy am I paying full price for all your stuff.Cindy Gerald.... Am done with your books.
There is not a thing I don't love about Cindy Gerard's BOI's (or her Bodyguards for that matter) and Wyatt "Papa Bear" Savage has always been one of my favorites (right behind 'The Archangel')!! I have always been a sucker for a sexy southern drawl! All I'm going to say is if you haven't read the Black Ops series you really need to start NOW! These guys are amazing!
I love this series. But this one wasn't as good as the others. But I did love Wyatt and Sophie. For some reason I didn't connect with this one as much as I did with the other. But it was still really good. Gabe is still my favorite ...Sorry Wyatt.
Meh. Something was missing for me with this one. I think it was just me though, because the story line was good and it had all my favorite characters. Maybe it was the Hugh/Wyatt dynamic...I detest love triangles.
