This story is told through the points of view of the Garcia sisters, whose names are Carla, Sandi,Yolanda, and Sofia. This novel tells the story of a wealthy family who has been banished from the Dominican Republic after failing to cooperate with the government and how the girls come of age dealing with the cultural and class transitions from privileged Dominicans to Hispanic New York immigrants. The girls being brought up under strict, social morals, moving to the states provides the girls with a welcomed escape from their pampered, over protective society in which they were raised in. Being subjected to racial discrimination, each sister rises up against their challenges along with their Mami and Papi. I really enjoyed reading this novel and I learned that whatever you may be going through in life, you can always overcome those challenges and make the best out of them.

I missed this one when it was hot. Loved the format - the different stories. A view into lives I have had no experience with, even though I lived in an Hispanic neighborhood. Very interesting. And well written.

Did not read this book, this one was entered by mistake. The one I read was by a different author. To post as read was the only way I saw to take it off my book of 'have read."

I really enjoyed the way it ran backwards, but felt the story was incomplete and ended abruptly. The writing was beautifully poetic without dragging and the characters multi-dimensional.

Humorous account of ethnic family - especially the parts about how the parents tried to secure their daughters virginity.
