Trinidad Jones is starting the festive season with sugary confections and a heaping scoop of worry as her shake shop enters its first Oregon winter. This book is the third and final book in Dana Mentink’s Shake Shop Cozy Mystery Series. I’ve read all three books in the series and hate to see it come to an end. I’ve grown to love the characters and especially Trinidad and her old service dog Noodles. I found this book was witty but had its serious moments also. It was entertaining and drew me into the story line quickly. Near the end I found myself on the edge of my seat as an unpredictable intense situation took center stage. I felt that Spoon to be Dead was a five star Cozy Mystery.

Winter has come to Sprocket and Trinidad Jones worries that her Shimmy Shake Shop won’t be able to provide an income during the winter months. As if that isn’t enough her ex-husband Gabe Bigley is back in town. This isn’t good because Trinidad’s boyfriend Quinn Logan turns out to be the jealous kind. Gabe brings trouble with him but that isn’t anything unusual for him. Seems he ran over a birdwatcher on his way to town. He can’t remember a thing about it and now he wants help from Trinidad to keep him out of jail. It’s Christmas time but is that enough of a good reason to want to help Gabe after the way he cheated on her when they were married?

I recommend this book to readers of Cozy Mystery and fans of Dana Mentink. This is book three of the Shake Shop Mysteries. It can be read as a stand alone but characters have been carried over from the other two books . I recommend reading all the books in the order that they were written for a better reading experience. This book is scheduled to be released on 10/31/23

I voluntarily read an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

This is a return to the small town in Oregon where we have met three women who are now friends, even call themselves sisters, united in a common situation. The three were all married to and divorced from the same man. Gabe has been serving a prison sentence for embezzlement. Now he is out and returned to town. He is also the prime suspect in running down a beloved citizen who is on a walk to bird watch. Trinidad owns an ice cream shop and the one who is usually asked to solve a murder mystery so when Gabe and his sister the police chief, kicked off the investigation, asked her for help, she decides to ask questions, along with Juliette, another ex. This is a fun mystery to unravel with a pool of suspects and some unusual events going on, all during the week leading up to Christmas. I recommend reading the first book in the series before the second and third book. You might want to have some ice cream on hand as there are some great sounding recipes Trinidad and company prepare. Great characters, especially Noodles, the dog, Papa, Trin's grandfather, and Quinn, her boyfriend.
I received a copy for the purpose of an honest review. These are my thoughts.

A fantastic cozy mystery! Dana Mentink is a great writer! I really enjoy the ingenuity of her ice cream shop desserts. The main characters are easy to get to know, yet still have secrets. The murder mystery is quite clever. I highly recommend this series, beginning with book one. NOTE: This story was originally the last of three; however, there is a fourth book available now! Don’t miss it! 😃📚

-------- REVIEW --------

This has been one of my most anticipated releases for this year. I loved the two first books in this mouthwatering Shake Shop Mystery series, and this was no exception. This series is great if you love reading about the business part of a cozy mystery. With many descriptions and amazing characters, I feel like I am visiting and hanging out with them in Sprocket. I also have to mention the furry companions. Especially Noodles, he is such a sweet and lovely dog!

The mystery was great and kept me on my toes all throughout the book. I didn't figure out whodunit until the end.

I can't recommend this series enough. Read the first two books NOW and save this one for Christmas.

This book comes out October 31.

Thank you, Net Galley and Poison Pen Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Trinidad Jones is back in this third book in the shake shop series.
As winter makes its way into Sprocket, Trinidad is anticipating the cold months ahead, not sure if anyone will be excited over her ice cream creations. A catering opportunity presents itself, but the festive mood turns sour when her ex husband shows up at her shop, stating he thinks he killed someone before collapsing.
Trinidad is shocked when Gabe shows up, but its the reaction if his other former wife that makes her speechless, why would Bonnie want to marry him, again?
This is a fast paced cozy mystery sure to gain the attention of mystery readers and fans of the author.
The best part was the relationship between Noodle and Scooter, what a heartwarming piece of the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of this book.

Trinidad Jones is fretting about how her ice cream shop will survive the Oregon winter. Sure she has a few classes planned and has branched out into catering, but is that enough? Her new gig is a party on a steamboat for a high profile client- very hush hush. At the last minute, her meeting with the boat owner, Leonard Pinkerton is postponed and he suddenly informs her one of the guests is dairy free so Trinidad's ice cream creation can not contain dairy. She put a lot of work into perfecting her delectable creations. Can she come up with something new in a few hours? Then her friend Bonnie drops the news she's getting married! Trinidad and Juliette are shocked by the news, feeling Bonnie doesn't seem excited. Before they can weasel info out of Bonnie, their ex-husband, Gabe Bigley, out of jail on parole, comes stumbling into the shop and announces he's pretty sure he just killed someone, before collapsing in a bloodied heap on Trinidad's shop floor! Local bird enthusiast Oscar Fuentes has been struck down and killed by Gabe's borrowed car! Gabe becomes the prime suspect but a nasty cut on his head has made all memories of the incident disappear from his brain. Chief Bigley, being his sister, has to recuse herself from the investigation but can't help but support her baby brother. Trinidad tries to stay out of this one, having a business to run, but when Gabe spills the beans he's about to remarry Bonnie and wants Trinidad to uncover the truth about Oscar's accident, she agrees to look into it- for the sake of Bonnie and her young daughter Felice.

This is the final mystery in the trilogy and it's a great one. There are many suspects and a few motives that could point to any of the new characters being the killer. I never guessed for sure but towards the end, I had an inkling it might be who I least suspected but I wasn't sure what the motive would be. The final reveal was a little bit of a let down after some of the possible motives and one I came up with the characters did not. The story has a hint of sadness because the murder victim was well liked and a fixture in the community. Also because Gabe is back and no one likes him except apparently Bonnie. As always, the ice cream creations sound incredible and I want to dive into the pages of the book and eat them!

The characters really make this book stand out. My very favorite is Noodles, the service dog flunkie. A Lab with a huge heart, Noodles is very empathetic and always seems to know what someone needs at any given moment. He's such a sweetheart! My favorite human is Papa Luis. He's not in this one a whole lot but he's there to help Trinidad with her ice cream and offer some information on one of the suspects. He's protective of Trinidad even though she's not a little girl any more. Papa Luis is maybe a little too protective and loyal but I know he'd never hurt anyone just to frame Gabe and send Gabe back to jail. Trinidad is a strong, independent woman. She has enough to do trying to keep her business afloat so she can survive on her own. Trinidad is loyal though and loving towards her friends. One thing I truly love about this series is the female friendship between Gabe's three ex-wives. That's unusual and refreshing to see them bond and become sisters instead of fighting. They support each other even when they don't agree and want each other to be happy. I think Trinidad is nicer, softer than Juliette but not the naïve young woman she was when she first married Gabe.

I don't like Juliette's behavior in this one. She's happy to be out of jail and moving on. She is a strong, independent woman and shouldn't be throwing herself at the first available good looking male who comes to town. Her flirtatious behavior kind of crosses a line since the Shimmy is employed by Juliette's celebrity crush to cater his party. Bonnie is acting mysterious and it's not like her. She seems emotional and upset more than in love and excited to get married again. She insists Gabe is a good father to Felice and it will be good for her to have her parents together. Okaayyy but he cheated on Bonnie and spent most of Felice's life in prison so how can he be a good father to Felice? Something's up. Bonnie has secrets and she's not sharing with the two most important women in her life. I wonder if there's a complication with her owning the train car property now Gabe is out of jail? Or something involving the expansion of her business? Maybe she thinks she'll get more customers if she's married? It's very weird. I sort of guessed one of the secrets Bonnie was keeping. It wasn't hard to connect the dots.

Gabe is actually Ok. I don't think he's very bright and it sounds like he was a spoiled kid who was never taught how to understand consequences for his actions. He knows how to use his charm to get what he wants and sometimes does it on purpose which I don't like. He does seem to show remorse at what he did and wants to atone for his mistakes. For now. Can he be trusted? Did he really hit and run Oscar? I don't get the impression he did but none of the clues add up. I actually like Gabe better than Trinidad's boyfriend, Quinn. I do not like Quinn very much and never have. He's jealous, possessive and angry. Plus he treats Trinidad like a child even making business decisions for her. What business is it of his to lie for her? What if she did not want to do business with this person ever again? What if she can't get it done in time? Ice cream cakes take a long time to freeze. What does Quinn even know about ice cream? Nothing. While he does apologize, he's never really appealed to me all that much.

Oscar was a local fixture in the community. Oscar and his two bird watching buddies, Leonard Pinkerton and Stan Lawper always go out on a bird watching hike at the same time every day. Oscar brings along his flightless, partly featherless parrot, Scooter and every day Noodles fetches a peanut for the parrot. Oscar is also active on social media and is eager to be the first to post a sighting of a yellow-breasted chat. His murder is such a tragedy for the community and especially for Scooter, who is now homeless and parentless. Scooter is utterly adorable! He and Noodles bond instantly and get up to mischief together. Their relationship is just so sweet and shows why I adore Noodles! Scooter needs a new home though. How can he stay in the tiny house with Trinidad, Papa and Noo and stay alone while Trinidad is at work? Surely someone will want him? NOOOO!! Don't do that to Noodles! The poor dog would be heartbroken! He has a special bond with Scooter! Hopefully he can stay!

Who on earth would want to kill a beloved community member? There are a lot of suspects in Oscar's death and none of the clues really add up. Leonard Pinkerton bought a run down old steamboat intending to turn it into a big business. It sounds like a money pit and while his sister accuses him of being a cheapskate, it sounds like he doesn't have the money to fix up the boat the way it needs to be. He also doesn't have anywhere to pilot it to! There's no landing on the other side of the lake in the picturesque wooded area just outside town. As it turns out, that property was owned by none other than Oscar, who refused to sell. Could Leonard have killed his own best friend just to get at the property? Leonard is not very likable. He's obsessed with the boat and has grand ideas but didn't think through how he was going to actually PAY for those grand ideas or make them work in the real world. I think he's more of an idle dreamer than a practical businessman. His ideas sound fun on paper but maybe not in reality. Leonard comes across as lazy, cheap and always trying to cheat people out payment while demanding more work. He claimed he sprained his ankle the day of the murder and had to get it checked out but he seems to be moving around just fine and there's no evidence an accident occurred or proof he went to the ER. Hmmm. Makes me suspicious. He could also have a bird-related motive for murder. What if Oscar and Leonard had an argument? Leonard sure could use the fame and potential fortune of discovering a rare bird. Oscar would have enjoyed being the first just because his passion was birds.

Another suspect is Iris, Oscar's sister. They've been estranged for a number of years but she recently moved to town and opened a florists' shop. Iris loves flowers as much as her brother loved birds. She is a survivor and a tough cookie. She has motive to hate her brother after something that happened to her in the past. She also has motive if she is to inherit Oscar's lakeside property. It's a prime piece of real estate. Iris could retire or go somewhere else if she sold it. Then there's Harry, a handyman who hitched a ride with Gabe after they met and bonded at a diner. Harry is hapless and Trinidad notices his hands don't look like a man who regularly does manual labor. Harry is kind of a bumbling fool at times but what if his meeting with Gabe was a set up? What if he conked Gabe on the head, drove over Oscar, jumped out to see of Oscar was dead and then drove the car to the lake hoping Gabe would drown and no one would be the wiser? Harry doesn't seem smart enough to plan all that. Was he working alone? Leonard is always yelling at Harry for doing things wrong. Perhaps Leonard hired Harry to kill Oscar and keeps Harry around to control him or to be Harry's cover story? Harry just seems fishy to me.

Then there's the Barrone family. Cordell Barrone is a local basketball player and a celebrity. He went to college with Bonnie and dated her for a time. He seems really rude and out of touch with reality. He continually calls Bonnie "Bon Bon" even though I get the impression she doesn't like it. He stalks her when she tries to get away from him and annoys her when they're together. I don't think she wanted this reunion! Cordell is the one throwing the bash on the boat but I think it's a sham. He has way too many extra tickets to give away to people he doesn't know or care about. Cordell has his own moral compass and I suspect it's pointing south. Cordell's brother, Reg, is a thug. He has even fewer scruples than his brother and they make it clear they're out to get Gabe. They're both pretty scary. His mother, Queenie, is just awful. She's controlling, mean, rude and probably hired a hit on Gabe and poor Oscar may have gotten in the way accidentally. Yes Gabe's actions "ruined" her plans for total world domination. He went to jail, it's been several years, move on! She's rude to Trinidad even after Trinidad made Queenie special dairy free ice cream. There's no cause to take her feelings about Gabe out on Trinidad. Queenie is like a mob boss who spoiled her sons and they don't have any sense of right or wrong. Why else are they hanging around Sprocket just as Gabe is out?

Renata Pinkerton is in charge of her brother Leonard's steamboat office. She does all the hard work of accounts, office management, payroll and everything all on a shoestring budget. Renata is nice, friendly and gossippy. She does love ice cream and is happy to eat any leftovers! I like her a lot. She's fun. Chief Bigley is tough. She's good at her job, she loves her job and she's chafing at the bit that she can't investigate this one. She's getting a taste of what it's like to be Trinidad and conduct her own side investigation. The chief is not unbiased when it comes to her brother though so she was right to stay out of the official investigation.

Bonnie's daughter, Felice, is cute as usual. She's very sweet and not too precocious. I'd be super excited about that hot chocolate bomb class too! Carlos and Diego are awful teenagers. Their parents have not taught them how to use their phones responsibly or the concept of respecting privacy. These kids are way too interested in the next viral moment and going viral that they don't grasp this is someone's life and this someone has a right to privacy. Trinidad should have had a no phones policy. I was disappointed Doug wasn't in this one as much. I like him much better than his brother.

The recipes sound amazing and I want to try the ice cream and the hot chocolate bomb! I don't have the patience to do it the way Trinidad did but the kids' version sounds easy and do-able.

I'm sad to see this series come to an end. I enjoyed it so much and want to return to Sprocket MINUS the events of the epilogue. See above rants about certain characters.

Dollycas's Thoughts

Shimmy and Shake Shop owner Trinidad Jones is worried about how much business she will have going into her first Oregon winter. In an effort to be sure her dream is a year-round business, she has branched into catering. Her first event is on a steamboat for a famous person, new in town.

Then, her, Bonnie's, and Juliette's ex, Gabe Bigley, "serial cheater, felon, liar, and embezzler" crashes through the shop door, informs them he is out on parole and that he is "ninety-eight percent or so" sure that he just killed someone. It doesn't take long for clues to start to stack up against him but none of his ex-wives believe he is guilty. They just need to get the scoop on the situation and shake out some alternate suspects before Gabe is sent back to the big house to cool his heels.

_____

Ms. Mentink has created such wonderful characters. Trinidad is a fun protagonist and her friendship with the other wives of her ex is unique and amazingly strong. They have really formed a sisterhood to support one another in any way they can. Only one of them is not surprised that their ex has shown up in Upper Sprocket. Trinidad's Papa Luis lives with her and she has a wonderful dog named Noodles. She and Quinn continue to grow closer. His brother Doug, has some emotional and social issues but is very comfortable with everyone in their group, especially with Bonnie's daughter Felice. I loved that Noodles made a new and unusual friend for a dog. The interactions were just so sweet.

There are several mysteries in this story all delightfully tangled together. There are twists, turns, secrets, multiple suspects, an old flame, and another body, all with the holiday events in the background. With all the action the story has a brisk pace. Had I not needed to sleep I would have read the entire thing in one sitting. The ending served up several surprises including the reveal of the killer. I followed all the author's tricks of misdirection and discounted the guilty party much earlier. The showdown was scary. My heart rate definitely increased as Trinidad fought for her life.

Trinidad and Papa Luis came up with some special treats for the party on the steamboat. Shortcut Hot Cocoa Ice Cream, Hot Cocoa Bombs, and Lactose-Free Gingerbread Ice Cream. All the recipes are included in the book. The Hot Cocoa Bombs would be hard to make at home so the recipe in the book is adjusted to make it less work and fun for kids to make too. I hope to try them with my grandchildren over the holidays.

There was one thing I didn't like about this book. We find out at the end as all the loose ends get tied up that this is the final book in the series. The author leaves all the characters in a good place which I am thankful for, I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to Trinidad, Bonnie, and Juliette.

Spoon to be Dead is another excellent story from Dana Mentink. All 3 books in this series were Perfect Escapes for me. Wonderful characters, twisty mysteries, and ice cream including “freak shakes and Hot Cocoa bombs make them all must-read cozy mysteries!

Winter in Oregon has Trinidad worried about the life of her shop, so she agrees to cater a holiday party aboard a steamboat. But when her ex-husband arrives in town, saying he thinks he just killed someone, Trinidad and her friends must figure out exactly what happened and why before they’re all caught in the aftermath.

This series has gotten better with every book, probably because the setting and the primary characters are all well-established by now. I like Trinidad, but her grandfather and Noodles are probably my favorites. How can you not like a dog who tries *so hard? :) The ice cream/shake shop is great, but setting it in Oregon creates more challenges for Trinidad and her staff to handle than a warmer climate would offer. Without those challenges, though, there wouldn’t be much of a story.

The murder victim here was not well-liked, so there were quite a few suspects to think about. My list kept changing as the story progressed, but I eventually settled on one character as the most likely killer and I was absolutely wrong (again)! I would love to read more of this series, but the author’s note at the end makes it seem like this will be the final book. I’ll keep my eyes open, and if more books are added, I will certainly read them.

Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

It was great to see how Trinidad fared during the winter months with her ice cream store. Such unique ideas!

And what a surprise to have her ex-husband the "Hooligan" Gabe released from jail and a suspect for murder. The mystery in the novel was a bit of a stretch, but great to re-connect with the characters. The bond formed by the three ex-wives is a strong one. Loved their solidarity and friendship. My favorite characters were Papa, Quinn and Noodles.

My gratitude to CelebrateLit and PoisonedPenPress for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

Dana Mentink's 3rd book in the "Shake Shop Mystery" series "Spoon to be Dead" is a fun take on Ice Cream/Pet cozy mystery. We get some fun winter/holiday themed recipes and events while also getting a little animal bonding. You gotta love a good "odd pair" animal bond. Noodles the dog and Scooter the parrot makes a fun pairing that I hope just keeps getting cuter.

The mystery part was interesting, with how it ended up I can see why it was a bit easier to get confused over some details. In the end I was mostly right in the who done its.

What a fantastic read! A fun cozy mystery set in Oregon. This is book #3 in this series and the first one I have read. It was entertaining - a great plot, lots of suspects and the main character, Trinidad, is a hoot. She owns an ice cream store and the yummy recipes at the end of the book is a great addition. I am looking forward to reading the first two books in the series.

With their ex husband out of prison, Trinidad, Bonnie and Juliette, the ladies are shocked to think he could have murdered someone as soon as he was released. While they may not have fond memories of their time together with him, none of them believes he’s a murderer. So Trinidad agrees to at least ask some questions to try and find out who really killed an elderly local out bird watching.

Will sweet justice be served along with Trinidad’s delicious desserts or will Gabe be heading back to prison? Only one way to find out…give the book a read!

The author closes the book out making it clear the sis the end of the series, and she does quite a good job at wrapping things up with a bow at the end. But I do hope that other readers will call for more and that we’ll see more in this series in the future. Why wait for a reboot? Just keep it going and we’ll all be there to read this series!

Huge fan of the series (and all the creations Trinidad comes up with) and hate to see it end. I love the characters, especially Trinidad’s grandfather, Papa Luis. The setting itself is also idyllic and the shake shop just adds to the mystique of the town. The mystery is well-paced and kept me guessing until the end. There were none of my pet peeves love triangles, TSTL moments, MC who doesn’t go to work - an all-around good read. This is perfect for a rainy day or any time you can read uninterrupted; you won’t want to put it down.

I received a copy from #NetGalley for an honest review.

Received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
This is one of the better light mystery novels I have read. The dialogue was well written and the story interesting as well. I did not read the first or second book in the series but was able to follow along with the story quite well.
There were a few typos around pages 140-145 that I am sure will be fixed before final publication. I would recommend this series to someone who likes light, fun murder mysteries.

This was definitely the adventure to end all since it did officially end this series of three books. There’s a really nice note from the author at the end of the book. Even if it wasn’t the last, I believe it’d still be my favorite. Secrets came out, but new friends were made as were apologies and new chances were given to those who might be needing them.

The showdown was really something and if you love dogs and how they can be heroes, you’ll have happy leaky eyeballs for a little bit while reading about sweet Noodles and his heroic act—and the cuddles he got afterward too. I really enjoyed this series a lot and while it’s bittersweet for it to end, it ended in the best possible way with some characters making amends where they were needed as well as some characters enjoying their happily ever after.

I voluntarily read and reviewed and ARC of this book provided by Poisoned Pen Press via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.

Spoon to be Dead by Dana Mentink is the third book in the Shake Shop Mysteries, and this is one of about a dozen cozy mysteries that I make sure to track down when the next one is coming out.

Mentink not only writes delicious food descriptions and recipes (at the end of the book), but her characters are very well developed. I even love the main character, which sounds strange, but in many cozy series I find myself enjoying the other characters more, and oftentimes find myself annoyed by the main character. And the animal companion, Noodles, is one of my favorites and now the parrot, quickly became another favorite.

The mystery itself was done really well too. Lots of suspects with realistic motives, and a couple of red herrings. I didn’t guess the killer early, which is always fun.

The only thing that disappointed me was I think this might be the last book in the series by the way that Mentink wrapped everything up. I think this series has a lot more potential to continue, and hope that one day it does.

My third Christmas book of the year is a cozy a mystery. While third in a series, the author catches you up and you don’t need to read the previous books (I haven’t). Trinidad owns a fancy ice cream shop and is worried about business the first winter. She accepts a job catering desserts for a party on a local steamboat. When a local birdwatcher is killer and her ex-husband accused, Trinidad and her friends (his other ex-wives) work to clear his name.

What I liked: I liked Trinidad and her community a lot. She seemed to investigate in a curious way, not in this could get you arrested for trespassing and interfering way (like some mysteries).

I read this in a few days. It’s easy and engaging. There’s enough characters to keep you guessing but not too many it’s hard to keep track.

What didn’t work for me: There were a few red herrings that probably didn’t need to be there - I really thought the parrot would play a bigger part.

I’m not sure I completely understand Bonnie’s reasoning for her secret from her friends, especially because at the end she told them fairly quickly.

Who should read it: Cozy fans this one was well laid out and had a bit more suspense and violence than I expected. The end was a bit tense! If you’re not fans of books with a heavy Christmas theme - this one just takes place near the holiday.

This is the first book I've read in this series, and while they are all able to be read as a standalone, I'm definitely curious enough to go and read the first two books.
The book took me on a twisty mystery, where I was never sure who the killer was. I loved the golden retriever Noodles and his best friend Scooter the bird. Their friendship was the most adorable heartwarming thing I've ever read!
And while I knew he wouldn't be the killer because they were trying to solve the mystery for him, I found myself hoping that he would end up in the hot seat, either for this crime or something else. I loved all the ice cream things and the friendships between all the ex-wives. I did figure out one of the mysteries, although it wasn't who the killer was. This book was a lot of fun, and I loved all the characters. I will definitely pick up more by this author in the future.

Okay, so this one really had me guessing. There’s definitely no shortage of suspects and possible motives and I really wasn’t sure how everything was going to play out. This has been a fun and enjoyable cozy series for me and I’m sorry to see it end. Fun reads!

Did not like how the author brought back Gabe and how he fit in the story I really hated the way she did Bonnie’s story, I just thought this was a okay end to the series of it is the end but I wished for more!

This is the third book in the series and Trinidad is trying to prepare her icecream business to deal with winter and snow in the cold Northwest. Can she make it through the winter? Hoping that a big event on a local Steamboat, being but on for a celebrity, will give her the cushion and exposure she needs, she begins creating holiday ice cream treats! As she is preparing for the event who shows up but her ex who is bloodied and passes out on the floor to her shop! This starts a wintery wild ride, did her ex kill a man with his car on the way into town? Is he really planning on marrying Bonnie, one of his ex-wives? Why won't Bonnie explain to her other sister ex-wives what's going on? Who is the celebrity and how does that come into play? This is a tale that will keep you turning the page, and with Christmas as a backdrop as well as a lot of interesting ice cream flavors it is a sweet mystery. Thank you to #NetGalley and #PoisonPenPress for a chance to read.

SPOON TO BE DEAD by Dana Mentink is the 3rd book in the Shake Shop Series. It’s the fabulous story of Trinidad Jones, owner of the Shimmy & Shake Shop, as she’s roped into helping her ex. After a recent hit and run that left one of local residents dead, he’s on the police’s radar as their main suspect when all clues lead to him including his confession. Will she help? If she does, can she find the clues needed to help him?

Trinidad is proud of herself. She’s survived a disastrous marriage to a lying, cheating embezzler all while finding out about all his other wives. She ended up becoming friends sort of like sisters of choice with the other wives. She’s not only picked herself up, but now she’s the proud owner of the Shimmy. So far, it’s been successful, with the help of Papa Luis, friends and two teenage helpers. However, the onset of cold weather will mean less tourist and less folks interested in finding a cold treat. She’s banking on branching out into the catering business with an event coming up on the Sprocket Steamboat. While in the process of developing the specific treats she will present to the owner of the boat for approval and hopefully to be hired for this big important event, she’s abruptly interrupted by the entrance of her ex who’s incoherent and bleeding stating he might have killed a man. They soon learn that Oscar Fuentes, a nice elderly resident and an avid bird watcher was killed in a hit and run incident.

After serving his time in jail of embezzlement, Gabe Bigley came back to Sprocket. Why no one seems to know except for Bonnie, who suddenly announced their upcoming plans to remarry in just a days. Neither will give any details other than it’s for the best. When Gabe asks Trinidad to help him find evidence, he tells her that he honestly can’t remember anything that happened other than giving a man a ride and then waking up in the car that had wrecked in the lake. He’s been dishonest and cheated and paid for it with a prison sentence and he’s lied to and cheated on all his wife’s, but he knows that he won’t hit a man and then leave him to die. Trinidad knows he’s a “royal pain, screwed up and morally flawed, but she doesn’t think he would either. She finally agrees to keep her ears and eyes open and pass on anything she finds to the authorities, about NOT for him, but for Bonnie and Felice, the daughter he’s been as good a parent to as he could be from behind bars. Plus, she’s interested to know why he asked her “What exactly is a yellow-breasted chat? his one memory of that afternoon, for two reasons. One, that was the bird that Oscar, after a short visit with her, had left that morning in search of and two, Gabe never was interested in nature and she’s sure he’s never heard of much less seen a yellow-breasted chat.

When Chief of Police Cynthia Bigley is taken off the case due to Gabe being her baby brother, can the chief and Trinidad work together to find clues on whodunit sorting out truth from fiction? Will the big celebrity that’s having the dessert party on the Steamboat turn out being big trouble for Gabe? Will Trinidad landing the dessert party booking, and possible more jobs from it, help her to keep the Shimmy afloat? Will the past come back to haunt folks in the present? Will Trinidad be able to help her ex and keep Quinn reassured that she’s not interested in turning back the clock because her heart is interested in only one man him? Will the reason for the agreement to a fast race down the wedding idle for Bonnie and Gabe come to light?

SPOON TO BE DEAD is a well-written story that will take you down many paths some dead ends, some causing one to scratch one’s head trying to figure out answers, but more importantly those alongside Trinidad trying to find the answer of whodunit and why? Dana Mentink weaves us a tale that makes it impossible to put this story down once you start it. While Trinidad may complete her task magnificently, she also leaves one wishing for many more trips to the Shimmy & Shake Shop and another chance to visit with the folks of Sprocket in future books in the series. As you fall in love with the town folks, you will be exposed to some lip-smacking delicious treats. Caution - be careful not to drool on the pages. Thankfully, there are recipes in the back of the book. I highly recommend SPOON TO BE DEAD and it most definitely gets my FIVE STARS!

I receive a copy of this with no requirement or expectations of a review. All opinions are completely my own.

Thank you to NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press for providing me with a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’ve really enjoyed the first two books in this series, and was excited to return to Upper Sprocket, Oregon to see Trinidad Jones, the Shimmy and Shake Shop, and the quirky crew that makes up her social circle of friends and family. It’s even more of a fun setting because the strange chain of events that brought her to Upper Sprocket led to her making friends with the other two ex-wives of her former husband, and developing a sisterly bond with them. Found family is done so wonderfully in this series.

First and foremost, I was heartbroken to discover that this is the last book in the series. It’s become one of my favorite cozy series to seek out, so naturally I’m going to miss the characters, the quirky town, and the stories that have entertained me each year. However, I did notice some changes in this story, compared to the first two, while other things that made this series stand out stayed the same.

For the first time, we get to see what the small, unique town of Upper Sprocket is like during the winter. Trinidad is freaking out about how she’s going to keep the shop afloat through the cold months, and it leads to some creative solutions on the part of Trina and the people around her—her sisters, employees, Papa Luis, and some unexpected sources as well. But just in case she didn’t have enough stress on her plate, Bonnie (one of her ‘sisters) seems to be keeping a secret, and their ex, Gabe, shows up in town talking about being charged with a murder. Trinidad promises herself that she’ll stay out of it, but she winds up getting pulled into being an unwilling amateur investigator once again.

Gabe’s presence and Trinidad’s assistance to him causes some friction in her relationship with Quinn, and Bonnie’s secret leads to some distance between she and both Trinidad and Juliette. And Juliette is a whole other story—she’s smart, beautiful, and independent, but I think that she really deserved better in this book than throwing herself at the first handsome guy who shows up in town, and basically becoming arm candy. I was disappointed in how the characters seem to move backwards in their character arcs during the story, although they do end up growing from their experiences.

The mystery in the story actually winds up encompassing more than one mini-mystery, and it kept me engaged from early on right up until the end. Mentink does a fantastic job of building a great mystery with plenty of suspects with strong motivation, and multiple red herrings. I thought I had the murderer nailed more than once, and by my third guess, I got it right. But knowing that I knew who the murderer was didn’t detract from how much I enjoyed this story.

Overall, this was a great story. I really loved how it all panned out, even though things wrapped up a bit too neatly at the end—not in respect to the murder, but with respect to the people involved in the story. My favorite character in the story was definitely Noodles, the aging service dog that flunked out of training, yet somehow manages to do the perfect thing when its needed. He always plays such a big role in the books since he spends most of his time with Trinidad, rather than just being a side note in the story, and he even gets a feathered (*somewhat feathered) new friend to love. It was the most wholesome thing in the world. And while I’m super sad there won’t be any more Shake Shop Mysteries (or shake shop recipes either), I am curious to see what else Mentink has in store for her readers.

Spoon to be Dead, the third book in Dana Mentink’s Shake Shop mystery series serves up another winning combination of hometown charm and intriguing mystery. Like its predecessors, it is a delicious cozy mystery that will leave you wanting more.

Trinidad Jones, the proprietress of the Shimmy and Shake ice cream shop in Upper Sprocket, Oregon is worried about how well her Freakshakes, which were highly popular in the summer, would sell in the cold winter months. But with her new winter-themed offerings, she is slightly optimistic about landing a catering gig on the Sprocket Steamboat to supplement her income. Unfortunately, before she can audition for the position, her recently-paroled ex-husband, Gabe Bigley, arrives and delivers a bombshell before passing out he thinks he has killed someone. And when birder Oscar Fuentes is found dead on the pavement following a presumed car accident, suspicion naturally falls on Gabe. With the police chief entangled in a conflict of interest (Gabe is her brother), it is up to Trinidad, with some help from her friends (and Gabe’s other ex-wives), to clear his name.

I have enjoyed all three books in this series, but this one seems special to me. The relationships between Gabe’s ex-wives (Trinidad, Juliette, and Bonnie) are explored in detail in the course of the investigation. Theirs is a sincere friendship with a bond that strengthens as the story progresses. The surrounding characters, too, have a charm of their own, especially Noodles, the “service dog failure whom Trinidad has adopted. And although he didn’t play a large role in the story, Papa Luis always brings a large dose of charm.

Not to be left out, the mystery is exceptionally good. What possible motive could anyone have for harming the beloved Oscar? And with a wide variety of suspects and clues and numerous twists and turns, you (along with Trinidad) will be guessing (and guessing wrong) throughout.

I believe Spoon to be Dead is supposed to be the final book in a trilogy, and, if so, I am sad to see this series come to an end. That said, if it is the final book, Ms. Mentink did an admirable job in tying up the loose ends. I just wish we could come back and visit these characters again.

Note: I received an ARC of Spoon to be Dead from NetGalley and Poisoned Pen Press. The above is my honest review.

Spoon to be Dead is the third Shake Shop storefront cozy mystery by . Released 31st Oct 2023 by , it's 336 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats. It's worth noting that the ebook format has a handy interactive table of contents as well as interactive links and references throughout.

Readers love cozy mysteries, whatever form they take, library, bookmobile, shopfront small town amateur sleuths, professors turned investigators, we're not very picky. Animals are a plus. This one ticks a lot of boxes. Heading into the winter season (not a big earner for an ice cream shop in Oregon), owner Trinidad is planning a catered event on a riverboat to help the shop stay afloat when her loathsome ex begs her to help clear him of murder.

Despite being the third book in the series, the plot works perfectly well as a standalone and introduction to the ensemble cast of fun and eccentric characters. There are a number of appealing facets. The author is adept at plotting and the dialogue never felt overly clunky or convoluted; it's engaging, light, and readable. The story moved along at a good pace and despite the longer-than-average page count for a shopfront cozy, it never dragged or felt overwritten. Main character Trinidad is intelligent, driven, honest, and kind. She's also a small business owner and apparently a woman of color (but the author doesn't overemphasize the fact. Still subtle representation is welcome and important).

The language is squeaky clean, nary a damn to be seen. There is no NSFW content and the denouement and resolution are well crafted and satisfying. It's a safe, comfort read - light but satisfying. The author has even included a few recipes in the back of the book which look intriguing.

Four stars. Definitely one for the fans of small-town shopfront cozies.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

OVERALL STAR RATING: 5/5
CLEAN RATING: 5/5

Yes…I know people are being murdered…but I still want to live in this little town of Upper Sprocket, OR! LOL This was the third book in Dana Mentink’s Shake Shop Mysteries series and I am thrilled that book four was just released because I’m absolutely NOT ready to leave this little town and it’s awesome cast of characters behind yet. Cozy mysteries are pretty hit or miss for me, but this series is a huge HIT. There were so many twists and turns in this one. I’ve yet to accurately solve the crime before the killer is revealed and I just love that the story keeps me on my toes guessing and wondering how it’s all going to tie up in the end. This one brought all the chaos of a soap opera! A true “who done it Agatha Christie style reveal that kept me smiling. Yes, smiling…over murder. LOL

As with most mysteries, I can’t say all too much without giving anything away, so I’ll keep this part short and sweet. Trinidad, the owner of the Shimmy and Shake Shop, is a bit nervous as she’s entering the winter season. Ice cream and cold weather don’t always mix. She’s excited to pick up a catering gig for a holiday steamboat party, but it’s hard to focus on the task at hand when her ex-husband shows up claiming he’s “pretty sure he just killed someone. How is someone “pretty sure they just killed someone you ask!? Well, you’ll just have to read this chaotic adventure to find out. This story was a wild ride, complete with an adorable grandpa and of course, Noodles the pup who has been in each of the books in this series. Noodles has a sweet relationship of his own in this book though. TOO CUTE!

Dana’s writing is so SMOOTH not clunky or confusing it just flows exactly as it should with both funny and heartfelt moments. You really feel like you’re a part of the town while you’re reading. We need some merch Dana! I’d totally buy a Shimmy and Shake Shop or Upper Sprocket, OR tee! Lol Thank you for creating such a great series with characters that feel like friends.

SPOON TO BE DEAD is the third book in the Shake Shop Mysteries by Dana Mentink. I’m saddened to think that this will be the last book to be written in this delightful series (given the author’s note at the back of the book), but if it is, then she’s ended it with a bang! From the very beginning, a topsy-turvy twist sets the scene for a page-turning cozy mystery that kept me glued to the story until I’d read the last word. The characters, protagonist Trinidad Jones, owner of the Shimmy and Shake Shop, her grandfather, Papa Luis, and her best friends and former husband’s two ex-wives, Juliette and Bonnie, all come together to make the book memorable. But the two characters who really steal each scene they appear in are Noodles, her flunked-out-of-service-training dog, and Scooter, a neurotic parrot. Their interaction and unlikely friendship provide heartwarming moments. Ms. Mentink’s attention to detail brings the characters and small Oregon town setting to life. With some humor thrown in just how do you convince customers to buy ice cream shakes during freezing cold winter? And with the appearance of the three women’s ex-husband who’s accused of murder, the plot takes off at a rapid pace.

Ex-husband Gabe seems to have killed someone with his car, then fled the scene on foot, only to show up at the Shimmy and Shake Shop. Except, he doesn’t remember hitting the person and doesn’t recall the time leading up to the accident. He begs Trinidad to help him. She doesn’t really want to, but it’s the season of holiday cheer, and he’s hiding something which doesn’t help her trust issues. With the help of the ex-wives, they come together to hunt down clues and suspects. The clues are well-plotted and plenty of suspects were uncovered once they delved into the victim’s life. I guessed wrong, several times, but at the final reveal, it all came together. I appreciated how the author answered all the questions I had and provided a warm and happy feeling by the conclusion!

I was provided with an advance copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Things are about to heat up in the dead of winter in Sprocket, Oregon. Trinidad Jones' wonderful ice cream shop is doing well. The Shimmy Shake Shop is about to cater a holiday steamboat party which will hopefully help boost her income during the coming winter months when the tourist season is over. Her day is ruined when her ex-husband, Gabe, literally stumbles into the shop. Right before he collapses, he tells them he "thinks" he may have killed someone. Gabe has a been a thorn in Trinidad's side for many years. He just got out of jail a few days ago, and it looks like he is headed there again. When he asks for her help in proving his innocence, she wants to say no, but her inquisitive brain will not allow her to say no.

Trinidad starts working on the case and realizes that the suspects that may have framed Gabe are piled up to the door, but she also wonders if Gabe is, in fact, guilty. The cast of characters in this book are special and fun to learn about. As a matter of fact, Gabe has two other ex-wives. Trini is best buds with them as members of the ex-wives club of Gabe. Their friendship runs deep as they have a kindred spirit in surviving their marriages to Gabe. Even though Gabe is definitely not a winner, none of them believe he is capable of murder. Dana Mentink's quick wit shines through in this book and this series. The red herrings will keep you on your toes as you are pinballed from one suspect to another thinking you have it all figured out. This was a pleasure to read and a little sad as this series seems to be closing out. We will all miss the Shimmy Shake Shop and all of the delicious ice cream treats that have been created for our imagination. If you need a sweet treat, you will enjoy this cozy mystery series.

Thank you to Poisoned Pen Press and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
