Although Animal Farm is written in simple straightforward language, I wanted to read an analysis of the book, due to its literary and historical importance.
My favorite section was Point of View. The omniscient narrator does not use all of his abilities via this position. He only enters the mind once, of one character, Clover. Otherwise, the narrator confines himself to general feelings/points of view of the common farm animals. It is these animals that are betrayed. We do not know the pigs' feelings nor the reasons for their behavior. Consequently, we are drawn to favor the common animals. Additionally, the reader knows more than the common animals understand.
This is Orwell's first joining of fiction and politics. He wants the reader to understand his point. His writing is clear, without needless intricacy, deceptively simple, with deep meaning and insight.
The Cliff Notes enhanced my thinking about the book. I should have used them more in my youth.
I’m not one to find deeper meanings in a story, so this book was an excellent reference in helping me understand “Animal Farm that much more. I especially enjoyed the section detailing Orwell’s background.
Michael was assigned Animal Farm by his English Teacher as his Easter reading assignment. I was so excited to be able to discuss this with him. I decided to do some background reading myself and read this Cliff’s Notes book about Animal Farm. It provided a lot of background which would introduce the reader to Eric Arthur Blair. It provides some historical context about the Russian Revolution. It did make explicit some themes which I had not noticed before. I did not always agree with the analysis provided, but I would recommend it as a study companion. A good tool of reflection for reading Animal Farm.
I was actually reading the Cliff Notes while reading the book again. I understood it a little more the second time through and with notes. But still didn’t get all the political references. I think I understood even book when I watched the movie. Not the movie version I watched had a different ending than the book.
I only read this to help with group discussions. It's a good source for a quick biography, book background, and analogy of story, characters, and political allegory of an anti utopia
