One the run from the mob, Bronte McBride needs the kind of protection that only the mysterious and handsome bodyguard Darkwyn—a former Roman warrior turned dragon—can give her. But Bronte's secrets could endanger both of them.Read Annette Blair's blogs and other content on the Penguin Community.
Annette Blair's romantic comedies owe their beginnings to a root canal and a reluctant trip to Salem Massachusetts. Though she had once proclaimed she'd never write a contemporary, she stumbled into the serendipitous role of Accidental Witch Writer on that trip. Funny how she managed to eat her words even with an aching jaw. Magic or destiny; Annette's Bewitching Romantic Comedies became her first National Bestsellers.
Her August '07 release, SEX AND THE PSYCHIC WITCH, the first in her Triplet Witch Trilogy, hit the #1 bestselling spot for contemporary romance-humorous on Barnes & Noble. It also hit B & N's overall bestseller lists for mass market and fiction mass market and #7 for romance mass market, topping Nielsen BookScan and Borders Bestseller lists as well.
Absolutely fantastic book. Annette does not disappoint. There are twists and turns throughout the book that drag you deeper and deeper into the story. I also loved that once again, characters from previous books show up in the story. :)
This is a fun paranormal read with an action plot. Third book in the Works Like Magick series and closely related to the first book [Naked Dragon].
Practicing good witch Vivica has a calling, she collects the strays she calls chameleons who arrive on earth from other planes and times and helps them acclimate and find jobs. To this end she has developed a step-by-step series of lessons which will help the individual understand the technology, language and culture of the current here-and-now. Too bad our hero has a touch of ADD, refuses to do the lessons in order and is much more interested in returning to his new found heartmate than finding out silly stuff about laws and governments and where Canada is.
Meet Darkwyn Dragonelli - an ex-Roman soldier who spent the last dozen centuries as a dragon on the Isle of Stars - now returned to earth in the 21st century. He arrives naked [and fortunately BEHIND the bar] of the Salem's Bite Me pub. The very first person he meets is a masked woman with long purple hair dressed as a vampire - and his heart says 'mate' while his head says 'maybe'. Vivica arrives - man sized cloak in hand - and escorts him out.
Bronte is the owner of the building which he materialized in - it houses Bite Me [vampire pub], Fangs for the Memories [vampire themed fun/haunted house], and Drak, a private nightclub for real vampires, LARP vampires, and the occasional wannabe. She plays the Vampire Mistress at Drak's and she really needs a Vampire Master to act as host, maitre d', and bouncer. And the now-cloaked stranger looked like he really qualified - now if she could only trust him with her real problems...
Darkwyn blows off most of the indoctrination process - including the part where he was supposed to learn to be circumspect about his origins. The result is his first night as Vampire Master he tells the truth to a slimy reporter/talk show host which then gets him, Bronte, and her nephew Zachary, spread across the front pages of various newspapers under the headline 'Vampire Dragon?'
What the book has is a great plot with fun characters. The plot has enough twists and turns to satisfy: involving a wedding, an evil witch armed with the weather, death scenes, reincarnation and the Canadian mob. The supporting characters are delightful. The human [well mostly human] cast includes 12-year-old Zachary who seems to know far more than he should, Vivica who keeps trying to 'orchestrate' things with great intentions but poor success, and Darkwyn's two dragon brothers who preceded him into our world. The animal [again, mostly animal] cast includes Puck the parrot who quotes Ambrose Bierce while giving advice, two winged kittens who are occasionally dangerous and sometimes just kittens, and Jaggidy an invisible, hand-sized dragon elder who came through the veil with Darkwyn and is enamored of Bronte and her magnificent cleavage.
What the book hasn't is vampires. Oh, they're there but play no major roles - they only have bit parts. So if you're looking for vampires, try another book. If you're looking for a fun, fairly fast read - Vampire Dragon has your name on it.
Can you read this book without reading Bedeviled Angel or Naked Dragon? Yes. There is almost no overlap between Bedeviled Angel and Vampire Dragon. Naked Dragon gives you some additional insight into Works Like Magick and the whole Roman soldier/dragon/dragonshifter thing but Vampire Dragon gives you enough to skip it if you need to.
Works Like Magick 1. Naked Dragon (2010) 2. Bedeviled Angel (2010) 3. Vampire Dragon (2011)
I don't know what the deal was with this one. It is the third book in a series, and I'm not sure if they have to be read in order or not. For me, from the first chapter on , I felt like I had started in the middle of the book. I just didn't get the whole thing. This book gets good ratings, so I guess it must be me. I may be a little too old for this premise. I just never did get warmed up to this one. Too may different creatures, language/terms I didn't really get. For the twenty/thirty somethings. I know they are meant to be funny and light hearted and I can read those types of books, but this one was just too "busy" for me. I have other Annette Blair books, but thankfully they aren't from this series. I'll give her other books a try at some point and see how I do with those.
I didn’t love this as much as the first two books in Works Like Magick. I think because I was still hanging out for a story featuring Vivica. And I found this a bit of a sad conclusion to the ending of this trilogy normally the final book rounds out the battles that are being faced. But this is still very open ended with more dragon brothers due to come in and Killian still on the run it’s a great story, but everything just felt a little unfinished.
Although I didn’t necessarily love this story as much as the first two tales, I did absolutely adore Darkwyn. He is difficult, contrary and not the most stable of characters. I love that he’s a little ADD with his approach to learning about how to acclimate to the rest of the world. I also love that he begins his romantic relationship with Bronte within the first few chapters where the other couples took a little longer to get there
The setting for Vampire Dragon, whilst not my favourite, was one of the more humorous settings. It was one which felt beautifully ironic and kitschy I did spend a lot of the time trying to figure out if the vampires in this story were actually real or just people posers. Then the masks just made it more and more kitschy as time went on. Not a bad setting and backdrop but definitely not one that I completely adored and wanted more of.
Whilst I had a few concerns about this story, mostly in that it didn’t quite make my expectations, I did also seriously enjoy it. Puck the parrot is just adorable and hilarious. Bronte and Zack are the perfect beginnings to a family when Darkwyn joins. And the moments of bliss and relationship that develop throughout the story are just fun. Mostly, I loved Darkwyn he was scattered, jumpy, and yet single-minded right the way through. A good little ending to a trilogy, I just need to get over my obsession with Jayden and Vivica
"Love can't happen until the mask comes off" so true. This is a beautiful story in a wonderful series. I love the characters and all their pets. This series has everything you need to keep entertained. Magic, suspense and so much love and acceptance. I absolutely can't wait for the next book in this fantastic series!
Well, this is a first. And one that puzzles the hell out of me. This is the first time an Annette Blair book hasn’t blown me away, hasn’t made me laugh as much, hasn’t drawn me in as completely as all of her previous books. Very disconcerting when this happens with one of your all-time favorite authors.
I kept thinking while reading the first half that we read a lot of the same in the first Dragonelli book, Naked Dragon, particularly the way Bastien had to learn being human again. Those are very funny scenes in that book, especially concerning his “man lance and other endearing oddities he comes up with in his relearning. But after an entire story with all of those new-found things, I guess I was expecting something a tad different with Darkwyn once he makes the transition from dragon to man. Vampire Dragon seems to mirror Naked Dragon in those little details, with only characters and place different than before. I realize the idea for this part of the series is to bring all of the dragon brothers out of their captured state to find their heart mates, but it’s a little much with each experiencing much of the same the previous dragon does. Darkwyn does buck the system, so to speak, by leaving his “classes early to be with Bronte, thus causing some cute semantics confusion, but that also happened with Bastien before his education as well as after.
It’s not until more than halfway through the book that it picks up and goes an interesting direction. Bronte and her nephew Zachary have been hiding in plain site from their deceased mother’s husband, a mob head honcho who wants them back in the fold because they know too much. Bronte runs a vampire club of sorts, with fairgrounds and other entertainment, for real and fake vamps, and this is where Darkwyn falls at her feet after his transformation - he’s got great aim when it comes to his heart mate - and where he eventually finds employment. Later when Bronte is nearly fatally injured by a mob spy, Darkwyn’s dragon emerges, scoops her and Zachary up to fly to safety where he can begin to heal Bronte. I did enjoy these scenes quite a bit, especially Darkwyn’s shifting and healing abilities, along with his emotional upheaval in his perceived allowing Bronte to be injured.
Now that she and Zachary have been found, Bronte decides to confront the issue head on by returning to Canada where the family estate is and to locate the evidence Zachary has hidden there - there’s a whole part of the story concerning this thirteen-year-old that’s pretty intriguing and interwoven into it quite nicely. Of course, once there with evidence in hand, they’re discovered and taken to Bronte’s stepfather where a confusing and inept fight goes on between the two factions, good versus bad, and at one point I had reread the part where Darkwyn and company lose control of the situation. It would seem that for a huge, though injured, dragon, a little more effort by the bad guys should have been had before their ultimate defeat when Darkwyn rallies and it all comes to an end.
Through the entire book, Bronte wears a mask. First it’s due to her business, all employees wear masks to make it easier for her and Zachary to hide out in the open. Then Darkwyn has his own ideas why she wears it and tries to get her to remove it for him, but he agrees to take her as she is. For the time being anyway. After all the time of Bronte wearing this mask, I’d thought we’d get a little more fanfare when it comes off, but it’s the last few pages where that happens, and I feel a tad let down by that - and the fact there’s nothing special going on when she does de-mask. Just seems there should have been something more, since it’s such a big deal for so long.
All this being said, Ms. Blair’s characters are still endearing and charming, especially the Dragonellis. I did enjoy seeing Bastien again, and Jaydun and Vivica make an interesting couple. The confrontations with Killian of Chaos are nail-biters, and having their Goddess Andra thwart her at every turn is fun. With the vampire theme throughout this book, though, Ms. Blair’s humor doesn’t come through as well as it has in previous books, which is a shame, because she’s one of the best when it comes to laughs. I still had fun, however, with the story and I’m still looking forward to the rest of the series.
I was really curious about the title of this latest Works Like Magic novel! I know that there was going to be another Dragon man coming across the veil in this story, but didn't know the dragon shifters could become vampires! possible spoilers Darkwyn Dragonelli is the 3rd of the Dragonelli's to cross the veil into Salem, Massachusets. Quick backstory: Killian the Dark Witch had changed a Roman Legion into dragons and sent them to a parrallel universe on the Island of Stars. These dragons had a Guardian Witch named Andra try to find a way to help them to get back to earth with a spell that as long as they find their heartmates and help them with their own 'life quests' will Andra be able to have enough magic to send another across the veil. Killian is still in the picture, still, and tries to thwart their every move. Darkwyn finds himself in all his naked human glory in a 21st centry bar... where he meets a purple haired masked woman who makes his heart beat for hers almost right away! Before he can help this masked woman, he needs the help of Vivica Quinlan who runs the Works Like Magic Employment Agency. She also helps "veil Crossers" get acclimated to 21st century life, as well as giving them all the necessary paperwork to get jobs and such. Usually this helps them in finding their heartmate as well. Bronte McBride is on the run from the mob with her 12 year old nephew Zachary. She runs the nightclub Drak's with a vampiric theme, which helps them hide in plain sight. When Drak offers his protection, she is reluctant, as she has trust issues. His strength and perseverance in his pursuit of her gradually wins her and her nephew over... but his secret is even bigger than hers! Both have enemies gunning for them! This is another fun read by Anette Blair! Paranormal romance with sexy dragon shifters, and the human women who need their help and love! There's humor mixed in with the danger and romance! My favorite kind of read! Plus, some cameo appearances from other magical characters in previos stories from this author! :-)
After Bastian’s success on the Earth plane, it’s now Darkwyn’s turn. He is the third dragon to be turned back to a human and sent to Earth. His mission is to find his heart mate and make her goals his own. Darkwyn never expected to find his female quite so easily. She showed herself shortly after his journey to Earth. He rushed his training to go work for her and once he felt she was in danger, he couldn’t wait anymore.
He showed up at her door and they quickly fell in bed together and she made him the Master Vampire at her club for the undead, even though he’s not a vampire himself.
They quickly discover that they both have deadly enemies they are trying to avoid. For him it’s the same enemy all his brothers have, Killian, who wants to make the dragons missions on Earth fail. And for Bronte, it’s her mob family that her and her nephew, Zachary, have fled from.
They eventually have to quit running and face their rivals head-on. And they learn that they can face and overcome any obstacles, if they do it together, in the process.
I’ll be honest; after reading the first book in this series, Naked Dragon, I did not want to read this one. But it was sent to me by the publisher and I decided to read it out of obligation. Was it a great read? No. Was it better than Naked Dragon? Slightly.
There were several things from Naked Dragon that were repeated in this installment as tends to happen in series. Darkwyn was sent from the Island of Stars, his mission was to find his heart mate, he had the same deformity Bastian did, and he also couldn’t wait for his training to be done and left early, etc, etc, etc.
I did find that there was a little bit more of a storyline in this book with Bronte running from her mobster family and them both wanting to protect the other. And I’m happy to say that Darkwyn’s “man lance was not the main character of this story, like I felt Bastian’s was in Naked Dragon. Although Darkwyn seemed to have a one-track mind from the very beginning, and seemed like quite the little horn-ball, his deformed member not causing the problems you would think it would (I personally would be running for the hills)! But Bronte was almost as bad as him so I guess that makes them perfect for each other.
This book was just OK in my opinion. I felt the author did make improvements, but it’s still not at the caliber I would like to see and I’m doubtful about continuing the series.
Hey I am a dragon person, so any story with a handsome man who happens to be able to turn into a dragon is a must read. Combining my two favorite things to read about!
I vaguely remember reading the first book in this series: "Naked Dragon" ... found for the obvious reasons! The premise is that a legion of Roman Soldiers have been charmed by an evil sorceress who then placed this legion of soldiers turned dragons into an alternate realm. After all these years a good witch has worked a way to get individuals out of the alternate realm and onto the Earth again. This must be done for the alternate realm is collapsing.
So there are many funny factors: language barriers, shape shifting control issues and the mission of finding a heart-mate. As in any modern romance book you have a strong female character (because aren't all women strong?) and an even stronger male who has a good heart but sometimes has to laugh at himself because of culture shock.
Bronte is a mask wearing Vampire Bar owning heroine in Salem, MA; raising her nephew Zachary Tucker. She is on the run from the Canadian mob and trying to keep her business quiet and out of the news. Darkwyn is a Roman legionnaire turned dragon turned back to man who has issues with following rules and authority figures. He also has trouble with the English language.
Together they have some amazing encounters and funny experiences. This was a fun book with a happy ever after ending... what more can we ask for?
I had hoped that this book would be better than the predecessors, but it really wasn't. In fact, it was practically a carbon copy of . It was also full of vampire clichés, and while I can understand it based on what the heroine did for a living, it got old rather quickly. In addition to that, I thought it was very out of place to have a business like that in Salem. I would expect it if the location was New Orleans, but it was ill fitting in Salem. I'm actually glad this is the final book in the series, because I wouldn't want to continue with it after this!
I didn't like this as much as the first [Naked Dragon]. The elements are basically the same, with the whole learning curve thing. I did like Darkyn and found some of his antics amusing but for the most part it was just too similar to the first one. I particularly liked Zachary but since all the dragons are male, he probably won't get his own book. Also he's only 12 so it would be a while even if it was possible.
IMO Puck (the talking bird) saved this book from being only 2 stars. He was just hilarious.
Another fantastic Annette Blair book. I loved Darkwyn, in all his nearly ADD dragoness. He wouldn't pay attention to his lessons, then quit to go to Bronte right away, planning to learn on his own. His problems trying to cope with/understand modern life were hysterical. Bronte's own issues with trust and her past also created problems for the pair. I also loved Zachary and his young/old soul. The things that came out of that boy's mind and mouth were amazing - and really funny. I can't wait for the next one!
A former roman warrior that was turned into a dragon has landed in the 21st century. He just happens to show up stark naked in human form. He becomes a bouncer at Drak's Place, a club for wanna be vampires. But that is not his real assignment that just might kill him. Bronte and her twelve year old nephew are on the run from the mob. Knowing too much, Drak's gives them the anonymous protection they need. Each having secrets will they be able to survive when the past catches up with them both.
I was not very optimistic about this book after reading the first in the series, Naked Dragon, which I hated!! If I had not received this from the publisher, I wouldn't have read it. There was a lot of stuff that was pretty repetitious of Naked Dragon, but it wasn't nearly as torturous to get through...it even had a little bit of a storyline although Darkwyn had a one track mind from the very beginning...the little hornball...and Bronte wasn't much better.
Love the Dragonelli brothers. Very funny. More action then the first two. Wish the other 2 brothers were a little more involved, but when they were it was funny. Fun, easy read. I hope that Jaydun's story is finally told in the next book, I feel like there was a gap between this book (book 3) and book 1 because Jaydun shows up at the end of book 1, and the Dragonelli brothers are not in book 2, and he apears in book 3 as a supporting character.
I normally really like this author, her books are a light fun read, but this one just didn't live up to that for me.
Bronte was not interesting at all. Zachary was more than a little creepy, even knowing why. Darkwyn was such a cliche. The whole club/entertainment center was beyond riduclious.
The next book in this series will be a make or break book for me.
Well, I got through the whole book and I'm still not entirely sure vampires exist in the author's world. The H's being too literal and missing the subtleties of the english language got him in trouble too, although the h was considerably more eager to sample his errr charms.
Well, the characters didn't get any less silly. The writing style is funny, but I think the type of humour the author was going for was overstated. The storyline line was good and the book was entertaining. A nice light read.
I like the idea behind the story but am not fond of the writing...just seems hard to read to me. Would I read the next book? probably. I am a sucker for series and having read the first three I will probably continue, painful though it may be.
loved this book annette blair writes some of the steamiest yet hilarious paranormal romances i have ever read. i couldn't put it down i absolutly love it when an old time alpha male meets a strong woman who can put him in his place.
I loved this book and can't wait to read teh next one. Whenever that is, I will have to look and see if her web site gives any clues who and when. But still something to look forward too.
