Jonathan Coe, born 19 August 1961 in Birmingham, is a British novelist and writer. His work usually has an underlying preoccupation with political issues, although this serious engagement is often expressed comically in the form of satire. For example, What a Carve Up! reworks the plot of an old 1960s spoof horror film of the same name, in the light of the 'carve up' of the UK's resources which some felt was carried out by Margaret Thatcher's right wing Conservative governments of the 1980s. Coe studied at King Edward's School, Birmingham and Trinity College, Cambridge, before teaching at the University of Warwick where he completed a PhD in English Literature. In July 2006 he was given an honorary degree by The University of Birmingham.

One of the true joys in life, in my opinion, is the right to differ. Few things can be compared to the feeling you get when you read a book (or see a movie) which everyone has been raving about and realize that it's utter crap. I really wanted that to be the case with What A Carve Up, although, having read Coe in the past, I knew there wasn't much chance for that.
It's one of those books that I feel there's not much point talking about. No matter what I say about it, you cannot grasp the true brilliance of Coe's masterpiece until you've read it. No words can do it justice. Political comedy, an accusing point with the finger to the powers that be or a mystery novel? Coe proves that sometimes there's absolutely no point in categorizing what's beyond categorization.
P. S.: The chapter about Dorothy is one of the most traumatic, brilliant and, simply put, perfect chapters in the history of literature, while the symbolism of the ending had me just blankly staring at the page for what seemed like a very long time.

I do love making an ass of the Imperialist class, and Johnathan Coe’s The Winshaw Legacy: What a Carve Up is chock full of reminders how the richest folks in the world have their grubby hands in everything with no care to the misery they might bring. Inspired by a 1961 English film, , this was a bookclub choice from a member who calls this his favorite book and I was glad to read something I wouldn’t normally pick. Not that I don’t enjoy a good mystery, I just rarely pick them and I think we all benefit from having our usual reads shaken up a bit. Though it is not a traditional mystery and Coe refers to it in the introduction as �a farce� and it reads more as a satire on the genre as well as the wealthy, ruling class. It is a fun and funny read although I found it a touch too long to sustain the joke, though the moments of dry humor really connect at times. This is a complex, convoluted yet comical story of terrible people doing terrible things, but never fear, we see them meet terrible ends.
The Winshaw Legacy deals with Thatcher era conservatives and draws in a lot of real world political drama, putting the characters behind the scenes of each and using global misery to line their pockets. It was hard to like even the better characters, but half the fun is hating them and watching them be absolute turds to each other. The jokes are more amusement at the long set up rather than actual laugh moment, which can be trying but I did get some good giggles. It gets a tad absurd near the end, following closely to the comedy film from which it was inspired, and while I don’t see myself reading more there are several others in the series. While I found this just okay, I do think about it all the time as the political issues in the book are still relevant today. I mean, it’s been almost a year so that’s gotta count for something.

Με τον Coe έχει συμβεί το εξής παράδοξο: 20 χρόνια πριν, όταν διάβασα το Πλιάτσικο για πρώτη φορά, είχα ξετρελαθεί. Ζούσα κ στην Αγγλία τότε, είναι κ υπέροχο βιβλίο-απ'τα 3-4 κλασσικά της γενιάς μου;;- οπότε λογικό. Το περίεργο είναι ότι έκτοτε δεν διάβασα τίποτα άλλο δικό του. Έχω στη βιβλιοθήκη μου τη Λέσχη των Τιποτένιων αλλά δεν το έχω ξεφυλλίσει ούτε μια φορά. Δεν ξερώ γιατί συνέβη αυτό (το ίδιο έχω κάνει κ με τον Σαραμάγκου που με συγκίνησε με το Περί Τυφλότητος αλλά επόμενο βιβλίο του δεν ακούμπησα έκτοτε) αλλά φέτος με αφορμή το Νούμερο 11 κ τους ήρωες απ΄το Πλιάτσικο που διαβάζω παντού ότι επιστρέφουν, αποφάσισα να ξαναδιαβάσω το βιβλίο κ μέχρι τέλος του έτους να ακουμπήσω κάτι ακόμα δικό του.
Καθόλου κακή ιδέα αφού η ανάγνωση του κειμένου ήταν μια εξίσου απολαυστική εμπειρία με την πρώτη φορά και για τρεις μέρες θυμήθηκα ξανά τον αριστοτεχνικό τρόπο που χειρίζεται την πλοκή ο Coe αλλά κ την ξεκαρδιστική προσπάθεια του Μάικλ να γράψει μια ερωτική σκηνή και φυσικά το τρελό φινάλε που θα ζήλευε κ η Αγκάθα.
Η αλήθεια είναι ότι όταν ο Coe κριτίκαρε τον νεοφιλελευθερισμό έπρεπε να τραβήξει την ιστορία του στα άκρα. Σήμερα, τίποτα απ'όλα αυτά δεν είναι κ τόσο ακραίο.
4.5* χωρίς να έχει καμία σημασία η βαθμολογία, με μισό αστέρι μείον για να το ξεχωρίσω απ΄τα πραγματικά αγαπημένα μου βιβλία.

Από τότε που θυμάμαι τον εαυτό μου ήμουν με ένα (λογοτεχνικό) βιβλίο στο χέρι. Η μόνιμη επωδός των δικών μου ήταν "θα χαλάσεις τα μάτια σου παιδάκι μου". Μεγαλώνοντας δε μου πέρασε η αγάπη για τα βιβλία αλλά κάτι η δουλειά, κάτι η καθημερινότητα και οι (ευτυχώς προς το παρόν λίγες) υποχρεώσεις, το διάβασμα έγινε περισσότερο μία συνήθεια για λίγο πριν τον ύπνο. Όχι ότι το χαίρομαι λιγότερο, αλλά... ξεθώριασε λίγο η λάμψη του έρωτα, χάθηκε η αποκλειστικότητα.
Enter Jonathan Coe και αυτό το βιβλίο. Μετά από πολύ καιρό θυμήθηκα πώς είναι η αίσθηση της έλλειψης του κορεσμού, η αγωνία να πας παρακάτω, να διαβάσεις λίγο και λίγο ακόμα. Γι' αυτό και το πηγα πολύ γρήγορα για το μέγεθος του. Ευτυχώς έχει γράψει κι άλλα.
Και μετά από αυτήν την σύντομη εισαγωγή, με την οποία διακινδυνευσα να μη διαβάσει κανείς την άποψή μου για το βιβλίο, έχω να πω τα εξής λίγα: το βρήκα ιδιοφυές, απολαυστικό, χιουμοριστικό και σαρκαστικό τόσο όσο (άγγλος ο συγγραφέας γαρ). Πολύ μου άρεσε και μακάρι να είχε άλλο τόσο. Δε θα πω τίποτα για την υπόθεση γιατί δε θέλω να κάνω το παραμικρό σπόιλερ, αλλά πραγματικά αξίζει να διαβαστεί! Ο Coe είναι πραγματικός μαέστρος, συνθέτης που οδηγεί αργά αλλά σταθερά στην κορύφωση, που είναι εκκωφαντική. Στο δε δεύτερο μέρος το στιλ αλλάζει τόσο δραστικά (πάντα με ιδιοφυη τρόπο) σε αγωνιώδες θρίλερ, που σου κόβει την ανάσα.
Όπως είπα, ευτυχώς έχει γράψει κι άλλα!

Anarchy in uk...
Μια κομψή τομή στην ραχοκοκαλιά της Βρετανικής αστικής κ μικροαστικής τάξης των 80ς και των early 90ς. Δηλητήριωδη βέλη για την μπουρζουαζία του δηθενισμου και της υποκρισίας, κ γκρο πλαν στα υφερποντα κατάλοιπα της άλλοτε αριστοκρατίας. Μια κοινωνία σε σήψη που τρέφεται με αίμα και σπέρμα. Δυστυχώς σχεδόν 30 χρόνια μετά τα πράγματα είναι ακόμα χειρότερα. Μέχρι τη μέση, χασμουριεσαι ασταμάτητα. Μετά παίρνει πνοή. Το φλέγμα του Κοου θα δώσει μια παράταση, κ θα του δώσω άλλη μια ευκαιρία.
Ο αστυνόμος Μπέκας, (για όποιον θυμάται το Αλαλουμ ) στο τέλος μάλλον θέλει να σατιρίσει την αναχρονιστική βρετανική κοινωνία
Θεωρώ ότι είναι ένα κακό τέλος. Είχε απλώσει τα χαρτιά του και είχε πολλές επιλογές για να το τελειώσει πολύ καλύτερα. Γνώμη μου πάντα

Το αγάπησα! Φοβερή πλοκή με πολιτική χροιά, φοβερή γραφή και προσέγγιση των χαρακτήρων. Είναι απο εκείνα τα βιβλία που χτίζουν την ιστορία από τόσες πλευρές που είσαι σίγουρος ότι όλα βγάζουν νοήμα και περιμένεις να δεις πως. Και έτσι διαβάζεις και διαβάζεις και γίνεσαι μέρος της ιστορίας όπως ο πρωταγωνιστής με την ταινία που τον στιγμάτισε. Το συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα.

Wow, this is a book with many layers to it, and it was not like anything I’ve ever read before.
First of all, this is a book about the infamous Winshaw family who is greedy and completely irritational and unbelievable. The introduction tells of us this dysfunctional family as a whole, but during the narrative we zoom in on the children and how they’ve grown up into greedy and unsympathetic adults.
Second of all, this is the story of the writer Michael who is hired to write a biography of the infamous Winshaw family. His narrative works as a frame to the whole story, and we frequently turn back to him and his endeavour to write down the family’s history.
Third of all, this book is based on an old horror movie called “What A Carve Up�; a movie that works as a parallel to the story of the Winshaws and the writer Michael.
This novel comes with some very memorable scenes that were perfectly described and that have carved themselves into my memory (pun intended :) ). It was a fascinating read, but it was also a book that taught me to be patient and stick to the story through the rather long and dragging descriptions of the greedy family members - not all of them were that interesting to read about, but once you reached the end of their story it all made PERFECTLY sense.

Το βιβλίο το δανείστηκα από τη βιβλιοθήκη επιφυλακτικά, καλοκαίρι και βρετανική ελίτ δε μου κόλλαγε και πολύ... Μετά τις πρώτες σελίδες άρχισα να το καταβροχθίζω. Γραμμή, γραμμή, σελίδα σελίδα!
Συγγραφέας που γράφει βιβλίο μέσα στο βιβλίο, ρεπορτάζ, ημερολόγιο, αστυνομικό μυθιστόρημα όλα μέσα σε ένα έργο. Η πλοκή υφαίνεται στην κυριολεξία, αφού το κάθε νήμα που ξεκινά και είναι φαινομενικά άσχετο, περνάει τελικά από τα υπόλοιπα και τέμνεται σχηματίζοντας το χαλί πάνω στο οποίο εξελλίσεται η δράση.
Θα κρατήσω σαν σημείωση κάποια σχόλια για την οικονομική κατάσταση της Βρετανίας λίγο μετά το '90 όπου νόμιζα ότι διάβαζα σχόλια που αφορούν το σήμερα στην Ελλάδα τουλάχιστον αν όχι και σε άλλα ευρωπαϊκά κράτη. Σχόλια σχετικά με την ανεργία, την υποβάθμιση της υγείας, τις ιδιωτικοποιήσεις για το καλό μας, τις διεθνείς σχέσεις, τα στεγαστικά δάνεια και τις κατασχέσεις και άλλα ωραία... Και αυτά γραμμένα τουλάχιστον 20 χρόνια πριν για μια χώρα που θεωρείται Μεγάλη...

"Το να πετάς δεν είναι ποτέ επικίνδυνο.
Επικίνδυνο είναι το να συντριβείς"
Ένας πρωτότυπος, ιστοριογραφικός, πολυπρισματικός, ιδιοφυής Κόου πάλι.
Αυτό που κάνει, που διηγείται την ίδια ιστορία από μια οπτική, μετά επανέρχεται κάποτε και την διηγείται από μια άλλη, τα μπρος-πίσω στον χρόνο, η λεπτή ειρωνεία του που παραμένει απλώς έμμεσα υποννοημένη να αιωρείται μ΄ ένα αγγλικανικό φλέγμα -το καυστικό οξύ στο χιούμορ, οι λέξεις ως το κόκκαλο- το συναρπαστικό τέλος που σε αφήνει αποσβολωμένο κι άναυδο, το πως γλιστράει ανάμεσα στα λογοτεχνικά είδη και στην αφηγηματική τεχνική - αυτός ο συγγραφικός χαμαιλέοντας Κόου.
Το ένα αστεράκι της κριτικής μου εκλείπεται επειδή εμβαθύνει και - ίσως- πλατυάζει σε κάποια θέματα ειδικού ενδιαφέροντος -τραπεζικά, πολιτικά πολεμικά, κυβερνητικά, διατροφολογικά- απ' όλα έχει πάντα ο Κόου!- με δοκιμιακό, ως και δικανικό σχεδόν ύφος. Ωστόσο αυτό είναι τελείως υποκειμενικό, μια αποκλειστικά δική μου άποψη. Είμαι σίγουρη πως πολλούς άλλους αυτό ακριβώς θα τους συνάρπαζε.
Σ' αυτό το σημείο κάπου μου θύμισε την γραφή του Φίλιπ Ροθ, η οποία γι' αυτόν ακριβώς τον λόγο είναι τόσο, μα τόσο αμφιλεγόμενη. Άλλοι τον μισούν κι άλλοι τον αγαπούν. Μέση οδός δεν υπάρχει.
Ε, αυτό είναι και το ίδιον των μεγάλων της Τέχνης: Να χαράσσουν δρόμους που είτε ακολουθείς είτε δεν καταλαβαίνεις κι αλλάζεις κατεύθυνση.
Πάντως αναμφίβολα ο Τζόναθαν Κόου ανήκει στους Μεγάλους. Στους Ιδιοφυείς.
Σ' αυτούς που, μετά απ΄ αυτούς, όλοι γράφουν σαν κι αυτούς. Ή τουλάχιστον το προσπαθούν. Συνήθως με μεγάλη αποτυχία.

Ωστόσο αυτό είναι τελείως υποκειμενικό, μια αποκλειστικά δική μου άποψη. Είμαι σίγουρη πως πολλούς άλλους αυτό ακριβώς θα τους συνάρπαζε.
Σ' αυτό το σημείο κάπου μου θύμισε την γραφή του Φίλιπ Ροθ, η οποία γι' αυτόν ακριβώς τον λόγο είναι τόσο, μα τόσο αμφιλεγόμενη. Άλλοι τον μισούν κι άλλοι τον αγαπούν. Μέση οδός δεν υπάρχει.
Ε, αυτό είναι και το ίδιον των μεγάλων της Τέχνης: Να χαράσσουν δρόμους που είτε ακολουθείς είτε δεν καταλαβαίνεις κι αλλάζεις κατεύθυνση.
Πάντως αναμφίβολα ο Τζόναθαν Κόου ανήκει στους Μεγάλους. Στους Ιδιοφυείς.
Σ' αυτούς που, μετά απ΄ αυτούς, όλοι γράφουν σαν κι αυτούς. Ή τουλάχιστον το προσπαθούν. Συνήθως με μεγάλη αποτυχία.

I have no idea why this book got stuck in my head years ago as something I had to read but it did and when I saw it on a shelf recently I thought why not give it a crack at long last now? And I’m glad I finally read it but� eh, it’s just ok.
What a Carve Up! by! Jonathan! Coe! is a critique of Margaret Thatcher’s reign from 1979 to 1990 where the Tories “carved up� public assets and sold them off to the private sector, to the public’s detriment. Coe personifies these critiques - poor healthcare, banking deregulation, war profiteering, and a cheapening of the culture - in the form of the fictional mega-wealthy Winshaw family, whose lives are chronicled here.
It’s also about the family’s biographer, Michael Owen, an ordinary man whose life is connected to and affected by the Winshaws in more ways than he realises. And the title is also a reference to an obscure 1961 movie of the same name starring Sid James, Kenneth Connor and Shirley Eaton, which Michael Owen is obsessed with and whose plot mirrors the book’s in places.
Phewf - what a labyrinthine concept! And the first thing to say about it is that Jonathan Coe deserves a lot of credit for juggling this many balls without dropping one - it really is an admirably detailed and masterfully told story. And then the second thing to say is that, after all that, the effect is underwhelming. Coe has enormous contempt for Thatcher and her ilk but besides that I’m not sure what he’s trying to say beyond expressing that rage in, what I imagine was for him, that cathartic finale.
The criticisms of Thatcher’s era as personified in the Winshaws isn’t as strong across the board. I could see it in the banker Thomas, the politician Henry and the weapons dealer Mark, because banking, politics and war were the most prominent features of that time, but Roddy the art dealer and Hillary the newspaper columnist? Eh, their contributions to giving the public sub-standard art was a weak point.
It’s also an immensely contrived narrative. I understand that in most fiction you have to allow for a degree of disbelief suspension, but there were just too many contrivances for my liking. Random lodgers in some distant town playing a major role years down the line, that forced four-month romance between Michael and Fiona shoe-horned in for a strained sentimental moment to underline the problems of the NHS, a chance encounter with someone connecting decades back to WW2 and the Winshaw family and Michael Owen - I mean, really? And what was the point of constantly drawing parallels to the Sid James movie - why did the book have to turn into a pastiche of that film?
There are also a lot of slow, boring parts to the book. Too many of Michael Owen’s chapters weren’t engaging, nor were all of the Winshaw family chapters - Dorothy, Thomas and Mark - terribly interesting.
I really enjoyed all of the scenes set in the macabre Winshaw Towers, as well as all the parts featuring the wretched clan squabbling amongst themselves - more than a few Winshaws come off as amusing Roald Dahl grotesques. The wonderfully named and overly-sexed elderly gay detective Findlay Onyx was a fun and quirky addition. And some of the Winshaw family chapters were really good - Henry’s is a wry look at the rise and fall of Thatcher.
Being a fan of Agatha Christie, and especially her best novel ...And Then There Were None, I really loved the finale as it turned into a country house murder mystery. Coe’s writing is incredibly skillful and, though I found the narrative contrived, it is remarkable to put together this kind of layered storytelling where even the smallest components come into play at some later point.
The novel could certainly be tightened up though - it didn’t need to be 500 pages long for what it is. It’s too sprawling, making its points unfocused and watered-down, especially its overall verdict on Thatcher, which was unremarkable. I’m glad I read What a Carve Up! if only to cross it off my mental checklist of books to read in this life, and it had its moments, but I wouldn’t say it’s a great novel anyone needs to read.

4.5* επειδή το τέλος ήταν μια μεγάλη έκπληξη γι' αυτό "το μυθιστόρημα της νεωτερικότητας",όπως χαρακτηρίστηκε!
Δεύτερο βιβλίο του Coe για εμένα και για μια ακόμη φορά με ξαφνιάζει ευχάριστα.
Και να πως έχει η ιστορία και έπεσε στα χέρια μου αυτό το βιβλίο:τον τελευταίο καιρό μέσα από συζητήσεις και λόγω των πολιτικών γεγονότων στην Ευρώπη (και όχι μόνο) προβληματίζομαι για τον ρόλο της Μεγαλης Βρετανίας.
Βασιλεία,εκλογές,δημοψηφίσματα και ένας λαός που με ξαφνιάζει συνεχώς.
Όσο για την ιστορία της χώρας,σίγουρα δεν έμαθα κάτι από την "ποπ" έναρξη των Ολυμπιακών Αγώνων.
Ίσως μόνο αγαπώ την μυθολογία της,την Ρόουλινγκ φυσικά,και την ποπ μουσική της που με μεγάλωσε την δεκαετία του '90.
Όσο για την ατάκα "κακιά σαν Θάτσερ" ίσως ζω στην εποχή που ακούγεται πλέον το "κακιά σαν Μέρκελ".Και όμως οι 2 γυναίκες δεν έχουν καμία σχέση μεταξύ τους...ή μήπως έχουν;
Το βιβλίο,με αφορμή τη ζωή μιας ισχυρής οικογένειας,εξιστορεί τα γεγονότα που σημάδεψαν τη χώρα μετά το τέλος του Β' Π.π μέχρι και το 1991.
Το βιβλίο γράφτηκε το 1994.
Το 1997 μεταφράστηκε εδώ.
Εγώ διάβασα την έκδοση του 2001.
Τώρα έχουμε 2015.
Πόσο τραγικά ειρωνικό μπορεί να είναι η επικαιρότητα αυτών που αναφέρει;
Μπορεί μια κοινωνία σαν την ελληνική να ταυτιστεί με την βρετανική;
Και όμως: αυτά που έζησε η Μεγάλη Βρετανία μετά τον πόλεμο,τα έζησε η χώρα μας μετά την 10ετία του '90..και τα αποτελέσματα τα βιώνουμε τώρα.
Εξηγούμαι: το οικονομικό μπουμ,οι μίζες,τα σκάνδαλα(κάθε τύπου),η ανάδειξη ανίκανων προσώπων ως νέα πρότυπα(celebrities,life&style),χειραγώγηση των ΜΜΕ,οι "μετακομίσεις" ατόμων από κόμμα σε κόμμα με σκοπό πάντα το ατομικό συμφέρον άρα μηδέν ιδεολογία,τρελές επιδοτήσεις σε αγροτικό τομέα,διαλυμένο ΕΣΥ,ο καπιταλισμός στην πιο ακραία του μορφή και τελικά το θύμα ο απλός κόσμος.
Όλα αυτά λοιπόν θυμίζουν κάτι;
Στο μόνο που δεν ταυτιζόμαστε ως λαός με το παρόν βιβλίο είναι ίσως το γεγονός ότι η Μεγάλη Βρετανία για πολλά χρόνια χρηματοδοτούσε την τρέλα του Σαντάμ Χουσείν.Δεν πειράζει όμως,γιατί και στην χώρα μας αγοράζονταν "μούφα" πολεμικός εξοπλισμός από "άλλες" ευρωπαικές βιομηχανικές χώρες.
Το βιβλίο είναι εξαιρετικό!
Σε σοκάρει!Το πόσα πολλά ανακαλύπτεις μεταξύ μυθοπλασίας και πραγματικότητας δεν περιγράφεται!
Πόσο αφοπλιστικά προφητικό;!Η κατάθλιψη και η μανία του ανθρώπου να κάθεται μπροστά σε ένα κουτί και να περνά η ζωή του χωρίς να καταλαβαίνει το χάσιμο χρόνου;'Οπως σήμερα!Μόνο που την tv την έχει αντικαταστήσει το διαδίκτυο και το fb.
500 σελίδες και διαβάζεται απνευστί!Δεν θέλεις να το αφήσεις από τα χέρια σου!
Τώρα καταλαβαίνω τι σημαίνει..βρετανικό χιούμορ!
Μπράβο κ.Coe αποτύπωσες με μοναδικό τρόπο..μια διαχρονική πραγματικότητα(;).
Το βιβλίο καλό θα ήταν να διδάσκεται σε τμήματα Ιστορίας(εκτός φυσικά από Οικονομίας,Πολιτικής Επιστήμης κτλ λόγω των γεγονότων που αναφέρει)για το πόσο τραγικά η ιστορία επαναλαμβάνεται!
Αναρωτιέμαι αν ο Χομπσμπάουμ το είχε διαβάσει..
Extra που μ'άρεσε: η βιβλιογραφία-βοήθεια που αναφέρει ο συγγραφέας στο τέλος και φυσικά το επίμετρο από την αγαπημένη μου Σώτη Τριανταφύλλου,η οποία κάνει μια εξαιρετική παρουσίαση-κατατόπιση σχετικά με το περιεχόμενο του βιβλίου.

Τι να πω για τον Κόου; Τον αγάπησα στη «Λέσχη των τιποτένιων» εδώ τον λάτρεψα! Από τον τίτλο κ μόνο ο αναγνώστης αντιλαμβάνεται τον καυστικό του τρόπο γραφής.
Το συγκεκριμένο βιβλίο αποτελεί την τρίτη μου αναγνωστική επαφή μαζί του. Βγάζω στην άκρη το «σαν τη βροχή πριν πέσει» καθώς είναι ανεξάρτητο έργο. Εδώ λοιπόν, ο Κόου συνεχίζει να μας παρουσιάζει την ιστορία τη�� Βρετανίας την εποχή που στα πολιτικά δρώμενα διατελεί η Θάτσερ.
Η δομή του έργου είναι σύνθετη. Έχουμε την αφήγηση της ζωής μιας οικογένειας, της Γουίνσο. Ο Κόου μας παρουσιάζει κάθε χαρακτήρα σε ξεχωριστά κεφάλαια. Μέσα σε αυτή την αφήγηση ενσωματώνει και τη ζωή του Μάϊκλ Όουεν, ενός συγγραφέα που ενθουσιάζεται από την έντονη ζωή αυτής της οικογένειας και επιδιώκει να γράψει ένα βιβλίο γι� αυτή.
Τα ιστορικοπολιτικά γεγονότα δεν εκλείπουν. Τέλος του ΒΠΠ, Σανταμ Χουσεΐν, Ιράκ, πόλεμος στο Κουβέϊτ. Με πλήρη ειλικρίνεια αποτυπώνονται και σκάνδαλα, ξέπλυμα χρήματος, μίζες, στοχευμένες δολοφονίες. Όλα τα συστήματα είναι σαθρά από τη ρίζα τους.
Πραγματικά δε φοβάται να γνωστοποιήσει την πραγματικότητα ούτε να καυτηριάσει τα κακώς κείμενα.
Το βιβλίο προς το τέλος θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πως κάνει μια στροφή στο ύφος αφού από πολιτικοκοινωνικό μετατρέπεται σε θρίλερ- μυστηρίου.

Μέχρι στιγμής είμαι τρομερά ενθουσιασμένη...δεν μπορώ να σταματξήσω να διαβάζω!!!!
Τί να πω γι αυτό το βιβλίο!!! Είναι γροθιά στο στομάχι. Όλοι φανταζόμαστε το μέγεθος της πολιτικής και οικονομικής διαφθοράς αλλά ο τρόπος που περιγράφονται στο βιβλίο είναι συγκλονιστικός. Θα το κατέτασσα μάλλον στα κλασσικά μυθιστορήματα γιατί πιστεύω ότι όποια εποχή να διαβαστεί δεν θα παύει ποτέ να μοιάζει φρέσκο και επίκαιρο. Με ενθουσίασε το σταδιακό χτίσιμο των χσρακτήρων μέσα από μεμονωμένες ιστορίες που στο τέλος δένουν αριστοτεχνικά και οδηγούν σε ένα δυναμικό κρεσέντο. Ακόμα και το αμφιλεγόμενο φινάλε του βιβλίου, κατά τη γνώμη μου πρόσθεσε δύναμη με την αλληγορία όπως προσωπικά διέκρινα. Το βιβλίο αυτό το βρήκα σε ένα από τα μαγαζιά με τα μεταχειρισμένα βιβλία που μου αρέσει να συχνάζω και το άρπαξα χωρίς δεύτερη σκέψη. Είχα ακούσει τα καλύτερα από ανθρώπους που εκτιμώ πολύ την άποψη τους, αν και με τον Τζόναθαν Κοου δεν είχα ποτέ παρε-δώσε. Παρόλο που η κατάσταση του ήταν αρκετά ταλαιπωρημένη το πλήρωσα ευχάριστα.
Όταν ξεκίνησα το διάβασμα άρχισαν μέσα μου να δημιουργούνται διάφορες σκέψεις, ήταν προφανές πως αυτό το βιβλίο θα χρειαζόταν χρόνο και προσοχή κάτι που δεν ήξερα αν θα μπορέσω να διαθέσω αλλά η ιστορία με κέρδισε σελίδα-σελίδα, ήταν τελείως διαφορετική από ότι έχω διαβάσει τώρα τελευταία.
Στην αρχή, κάπως πονηρά, σε διπλαρώνει με ένα μυστήριο το οποίο ξεκινάει τα χρόνια τού δεύτερου παγκοσμίου πολέμου και διαδραματίζεται στους γνωστούς πύργους των Γουινσο που ανήκει σε μια οικογένια της υψηλής αγγλικής τάξης με το ίδιο όνομα. Στην συνέχεια μεταμορφώνεται σε κάτι άλλο που δεν μπορώ να το κατηγοριοποιήσω, ίσως κοινωνικής θεματολογίας. Είναι αρκετά φανερό πως ο Κοου ήθελε αυτό το βιβλίο να φωνάζει κατά της ταξικής διαφοροποίησης της Αγγλικής κοινωνίας η οποία δεν έχει σταματήσει στιγμή να δημιουργεί προβλήματα στην εργατική τάξη η οποία πάντα πληρώνει τους λογαριασμούς της άπληστης υψηλής τάξης.

Δεύτερο βιβλίο που διαβάζω του Κόου και για ακόμα μια φορά δεν με απογοήτευσε. Θατσερική πολιτική, πόλεμος στο Κουβέιτ, σκάνδαλα που αφορούν τις «καλές» οικογένειες της Βρετανίας είναι μερικά από τα θέματα που καταπιάνεται το βιβλίο. Στην αρχή με κούρασε αλλά όσο προχωρούσε τόσο με κέρδιζε.

Devo fare una premessa: ho letto questo libro su suggerimento della mia libraia di fiducia. Dopo l'esperienza di "Donna per caso" mi ero ripromessa di non dare possibilità a Coe ma, fortunatamente, mi sono fatta tentare dai consigli di Sara.
Ho letto un sacco di recensioni a dir poco entusiaste e credo ci sia davvero poco da aggiungere. Dirò solo perché, secondo me, "La famiglia Winshaw" è un libro da non perdere. Coe riesce con pungente ironia a raccontare tutto il peggio dell'Inghilterra tra gli anni Settanta e Novanta senza cadere nel didascalico, costruendo dei personaggi perfetti con la peculiare caratteristica di essere parenti (serpenti).
Una saga familiare avvincente dall'epilogo inaspettato di cui è improbabile coprotagonista uno scrittore di poco successo, dalla vita poco avvincente e dalle poche qualità.
La famiglia Winshaw è composta da personaggi inglesi di spicco nei vari campi: mass media, finanza, agricoltura intensiva.
A Coe il merito di essere riuscito a raccontare un'epoca senza diventare noioso, ma costruendo un giallo intricato e contorto fino all'ultima pagina.
Strepitoso.

Hugely readable and very enjoyable social satire drawing on English farce and spoof horror movies.
Ostensibly the story of the Winshaw family - a family "stuck twice by tragedy but never on such a terrible scale" (as the book both starts and ends). One of the two brothers of the second generation Godfrey is shot down on a crew mission in the war, causing his closest sister Tabitha to cause the other brother Lawrence of his murder with such vehemence and persistence that she is taken to a mental hospital. Twenty years later she is released for the other brother Mortimer's fiftieth birthday, a fraught occasion which ends in a murderous assault on Lawrence who ends up killing his unknown assailant.
The remainder of the book is set in the 1980s and very much a zeitgeist of that era.
One set of key characters are the five third generation Winshaw's - Hilary a reactionary right wing newspaper columnist, Henry an ex-labour politician now defected to the Tories and an enthusiast for NHS privatisation both publically on chat shows and behind the scenes in lobbying, Roderick an exploitative art dealer, Dorothy married to a farmer whose business she has turned into an intensively factory farmed purveyor of ready-made junk food, Thomas an investment banker making his fortune from privatisation and Mark a shady arms dealer bound up with Iraq.
All are hugely successful (with massively intertwined relationships across the establishment) and utterly greed driven and amoral.
The short chapters on each of them pick up on their lives in satirical but also insightful detail which skewer the times.
The other key character is Michael Owen a fairly hopeless author commissioned in odd circumstances by Tabitha to write a biography of the family. There are a number of other related "normal" characters around him which turn out to have links both to him and to the Winshaw's whose ability to cause misery and detestation in their wake is partly traced through their stories.
The book ends with the reading of Mortimer's will to which Michael is invited and which features the elimination of each of the third generation in macabre ways which relate to their failings, together with a series of revelations.

What a Carve Up! is so much more than a political novel, though it is certainly that. The Winshaw peeps represent all that was wrong with the greed decade (1980s) in Britain (when people I cared for couldn’t get a job or proper medical treatment on the national health). In spite of my disgust with those times, I’m delighted by Coe’s absolutely horrid, unabashedly over-the-top ‘baddies� who represent what can go wrong when creeps rule. Also a plus is the ever-shifting narrative from first person -- to manuscript -- to newspaper article -- to third person, etc. Love it.
Coe draws a network of parallels between his narrative and the 1961 film, What a Carve Up!, which is itself a spiffy parody of the horror film and the British cozy genres. The author uses a tame bedroom scene from the movie to describe the sexual awakening of the protagonist Owen as a youth, and in a separate part of the book, Thomas Winshaw’s paraphilia. But the connection to the film runs deeper. The characters and situations Coe draws are, at times, as outlandish as those in the film. A beastly, upper crust family; the imposing, dark mansion; an attractive, sincere nurse; a grave family solicitor; a nutty spinster; tensions between social class; unrequited love; the reading of the will with ensuing murders; and certainly, sexual repression � all these elements from the film are in this novel. Suits me; the film’s been on my mental ‘like� list for quite some time because it’s a homage to Christie’s, Ten Little Indians.
There are yummy little illustrations of each Winshaw dotted throughout the book; each introduces the characters� textual profiles. As caricatures, they are as cartoonish and farcical as Coe’s text. Likewise, they provide lots of information on who these people really are. Stylistically they copy Tenniel, and I believe that this is intentional because they effectively convey a type of demented whimsy that's found in, Alice Through the Looking Glass. (I hope these sketches are in all editions.)
The message is fairly straightforward: Greed is bad and can ruin people’s lives. Got it. But for me, what saves this book from being boringly preachy are mainly two things: The Fiona/Owen storyline harkens to Orpheus' loss of Eurydice (a major sniffle moment). Much of the sexuality in the book is insulated, dreamlike, and voyeuristic. Let’s face it � a healthy, well-adjusted existence is preferred by most in real-life, but makes for poor copy. The film’s bedroom scene presented through a mirror; Owen’s titillation via the lens of countless video tapes; Joan’s slumber observed; the deliciously icky Thomas -- all these remind me of the pathos and terrible consequences of an Orphean gaze, and the impotence of fear and greed.
The novel’s other saving grace and great strength is humor. I wonder. Would I like this book as much if I didn’t agree with the author’s politics as presented in the text? How much does this matter to me? I dunno. But it’s been a long time since a novel has made me laugh right out loud the way this one has. I startled the cat on several occasions with my guffaws. This is truly the author’s gift, because it’s those funny, shiny moments in the novel that remind me how hilarity makes life worth living, no matter who’s running the country. Now, I will never see a Maraschino cherry as just a Maraschino cherry. I am very happy to have read this book.

Ένα βιβλίο έξυπνο, σατιρικό, με διεξοδικά κατασκευασμενες καρικατούρες ανθρώπων που συνοψιζουν πολύ καλύτερα από κάθε δοκίμιο την συγκεκριμενη πολιτική και καλλιτεχνική συνθήκη.

Remember when Hollywood used to keep putting out extremely similar movies, two by two, at exactly the same time, like The Truman Show and Pleasantville, or Antz and A Bug's Life? This novel is the companion piece to Iain Banks' slightly better Complicity; in both someone goes around murdering representatives of the vile English establishment in amusing ways. The point is to spin some riffs on the various ways these creeps run the UK. It's all a big revenge fantasy and quite amusing and all that, but it just isn't very serious. Which I wouldn't mention only this particular novel is 500 pages long, so the jokes had better be good ones.

Η "Βρετανική ιστορία της ατιμίας", παραφράζοντας τον τίτλο του Borges. Ξεκίνησε αργά, και αφού τροχιοδρόμησε για καμιά ογδονταριά σελίδες, απογειώθηκε μεν αλλά δεν ανέβηκε ψηλά. Στην αβέβαιη αυτή πτήση ήταν αρκετές οι φορές που φόρεσα το αλεξίπτωτό μου, έτοιμος να εγκαταλείψω το σκάφος..
Στα θετικά: ο καυστικός σχολιασμός της απληστίας και των άλλων έξι αμαρτημάτων της βρετανικής ελίτ, συνοδευόμενος από επίδειξη τεχνικής, ή μάλλον τεχνικών.
Η πίκρα: βιωματικός αλλά και άνισος, συχνά πειστικός, συχνότερα όμως υπερβολικός - εξ άμβωνος καταγγελτικός λόγος, για να το θέσω ήπια:
" Το γλένταγε με την ψυχή του ν' αρπάζει αυτές τις μεγάλες κρατικές εταιρείες από τα χέρια των φορολογουμένων και να τις διαμελίζει σε μία μειοψηφία μετόχων που διψούσαν για κέρδη: η ιδέα ότι συνέβαλε στην αφαίρεση της ιδιοκτησίας από τους πολλούς και τη συγκέντρωση της στα χέρια ολίγων, τον πλημμύριζε με ένα βαθύ και καθησυχαστικό αίσθημα δικαιοσύνης. Comincio dalla fine.
Avete presenti quei pomeriggi domenicali invernali, quando fuori è freddo, in tv non c’� nulla di interessante da vedere, i dvd da guardare sono sempre gli stessi e allora, per passare il tempo, si decide di fare una partita a Cluedo? Il pomeriggio vola, a me il Cluedo piace da matti, e giocare per scoprire se l’assassino è Miss Scarlett, con la rivoltella, in sala da ballo o il colonnello Mustard, con la corda, in veranda mi appassiona molto di più che leggere un giallo o guardarne uno in televisione.
Ebbene, la seconda parte del libro di Jonathan Coe è stato un rivivere una partita a Cluedo: appassionante. Un thriller secondo il modello della “camera chiusa� che si svolge nello sfondo di un vecchio maniero inglese, con gli ingredienti tipici della letteratura del genere, che si dipana sotto lo sguardo tranquillo di una vecchietta, stile Miss Marple, che sferruzza pacifica in mezzo a omicidi perpetrati nei modi più strani e al contempo “appropriati�, richiamando in modo esplicito “dieci piccoli indiani� di Agatha Christie.
Altro genere la prima parte del libro: “un libro tremendo, un libro senza precedenti, fatto in parte di memorie private, in parte di cronaca sociale, tutto mescolato insieme in una miscela letale e devastante�. Così il protagonista del romanzo, lo scrittore Michael Owen, descrive il libro che lui è stato incaricato a scrivere, che rievochi le gesta della famiglia Winshaw.
Ed è proprio questo mescolamento di generi, di stili e sovrapposizioni di toni che mi ha trasmesso un senso di disordine e ha reso la lettura a tratti difficoltosa.
Un libro nel libro: il libro di Coe contiene il libro di Owen “l’eredità Winshaw * cronaca di una famiglia”e, con questo espediente, racconta 50 anni di costume, cronaca, vita politica britannici visti attraverso la storia di una famiglia che rappresenta il volto inquietante del potere nell’economia, nella finanza, nell’editoria, nella politica, nell’industria bellica; una famiglia di “vermi con sembianze umane�, guidati in ogni loro azione esclusivamente dalla nuda, brutale e rapace avidità (così vengono descritti i propri congiunti da un Winshaw nel suo testamento). Ci sono pagine notevoli,colme di satira politica, di denuncia sociale –in particolare sulla malasanità britannica introdotta con la riforma del servizio sanitario nazionale realizzata dal governo della Tatcher- e di costume. La vita dei Winshaw si incrocia –uso appositamente questo termine- con la vita e il destino dello scrittore, e ciò viene espresso da Coe attraverso bruschi cambiamenti di stile, si passa dal racconto delle vicende di Michael Owen in prima persona all’esposizione in terza persona delle vicende Winshaw, poi nel finale anche la storia di Michael viene raccontata in terza persona, e anche cambiamenti di toni, che da ferocemente ironici passano repentinamente ad atmosfere di amarezza e anche profonda tragicità. Tutto ciò, anche se alla fine i tasselli vanno al loro posto, mi ha trasmesso il senso di un libro confusionario.
Un appunto su i destini incrociati, cui ho fatto cenno sopra. E� lo stesso Coe a citare Calvino; e nel retro di copertina si legge “Coe incrocia destini secondo la lezione di Calvino�.
Il grandissimo scrittore italiano lo fa in modo superbo, con estro, creatività e genio. Lo scrittore britannico credo che la lezione debba ripassarla meglio.

2018 reread review:
One little fear I have when I reread a favourite book is if I dislike it. This is the third time I’ve read Jonathan Coe’s fourth novel What a Carve Up! and not only did I like it more than the previous 2 readings but I discovered how deep Coe’s sense of satire is.
The centerpiece of the book could be The Winshaws, the awful aristocratic family or Michael Owen, the person who has been commissioned to write biography about the Winshaws but in reality, I would say that the film What a Carve up! is the true link between everything that happens in the novel.
The film itself is a British horror comedy which Michael Own watches as a birthday treat. Unfortunately his mother deems the film unsuitable and pulls Michael out of the cinema midway and all the way through adulthood he incorporates his life within the film. Not only that but Michael has other vivid memories about his childhood; the farm he grew up on, the walks in the park, the death of his father and his first forays into writing. All are linked to the Winshaws.
The Winshaws are an example of upper class people at their worst. Each of the siblings or parents have controlled a certain aspect of society; for example, Hilary, the youngest Winshaw works as a gossip columnist and damages reputations, Roddy, her brother works as an Art Dealer and screws people in every way possible. Mark, their cousin is an arms dealer, Dorothy, their aunt works in animal husbandry and so on. All Winshaws will stop at nothing to achieve their aims, even if it means killing the people closest to them. Coe has picked a perfect metaphor on politics: generally people who don’t understand the profession or do not care about the welfare of others, wreaking havoc on the common folks while earning a handsome profit.
As Michael is chosen to write a biography on these people, he begins his research and the more he discovers the horrors these people commit, the more he realises how they have affected his life from childhood. Murders, disappearances, wars: all are linked to The WInshaws. Yes that includes the film What a Carve Up! as well.
What a Carve up! is no ordinary satire. It doubles as a murder mystery, especially during the ending, which resembles an elaborate game of Cluedo. Coe doesn’t stop there. The book contains high comedy, adventure and horror. Despite the complexity and cleverness of this novel, it is readable and entertaining.
This paltry review just skims the surface of this deep book. I could also mention how Coe manages to link all details in the most surprising way, how the Dorothy chapter will give you nightmares, how he can make a person eating a cheeseburger sound amazing. There are more surprises but it is more fun if you discover them.
Considering that Coe’s previous three novels were ok, What a Carve Up! is clearly an artistic leap. With �.Carve Up! Coe has managed to combine experimental techniques and make them accessible. I cannot stress that this is a work of genius and I am not exaggerating. Read Read Read this novel.

Άμα δε σου πουν δε ποια χώρα είναι, νομίζεις ότι γράφει για τον Μητσοτάκη. Εξαιρετικό βιβλίο. Βαθύ σαν το πλέγμα των εξουσιαστικών σχέσεων, αλλά ταυτόχρονα ιδιαίτερα αστείο.
