Nancy Tafuri

Nancy Tafuri is probably best known as the creator of Have You Seen My Duckling?, a 1985 Caldecott Honor Book described by Parent’s Choice as “beautifully precise yet emotionally affecting. Trained as a graphic designer, Tafuri has authored more than 45 books over 30 years for the very young.

When Tafuri first attempted picture book illustration in the late 1970’s picture books were aimed at five-, six-, and seven-year-olds. Tafuri’s images were considered “too graphic for children that age. “The pictures are too big, she was told over and over about the large, colorful shapes she drew. Finally, Tafuri’s talent was recognized and tapped at Greenwillow Books, Harper Collins Publishers.

Since then she has had the opportunity to work with Scholastic Press, Scholastic Inc., Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers, Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing Division and most recently Little, Brown Books For Young Readers, Little, Brown and Company.

Tafuri was born in Brooklyn, New York. For the first ten years of her life she was an only child and says that this helped her to learn to entertain herself with stories and art.

Tafuri entered the School of Visual Arts in New York City in 1964. Her first job was as an assistant art director for the publishing firm Simon & Schuster. She left two years later and married Thomas Tafuri, a fellow student at the School of Visual Arts.

The Tafuri’s opened their own graphic design studio, in 1971. Their primary product was dust jackets for hardcover books. They opened their business in New York City, but eventually moved their studio and home to Connecticut.

At this time, Nancy was able to devote all of her time to writing and illustration.

When Tafuri finally found herself illustrating children’s books, either her own or other authors, she felt she had found her life’s calling and a strong sense of joy from creating them. She loves to take a small portion of the text and create a visual representation that children can grasp and remember. In 1989, when Cristina was born, Nancy began to feel even more strongly motivated to illustrate for children. Her work seemed even more important and more personal.

“I feel honored to be creating literature for young children. Seeing how very important the early years are in a person’s life, I can only hope that my books can contribute in some small way to that growth, with the feelings that I hope I project within those pages, through line, color, shape, and story.

I hadn't heard of Nancy Tafuri until we received this book from the doctors office when my first child was a baby and he really enjoyed it. A Tafuri that we own, it's one we keep coming back to, to read. For my 5 yr old, and for my twin preschoolers, it's a silly story about a goose who keeps finding silly places to lay her eggs. A cute and engaging story that could possibly be labeled a level 1 reading book.

Nancy Tafuri's books like this one are a great introduction to picture books for toddlers who are used to board books. The illustrations are big and bold, and the text is large and simple with only a few words or one sentence on each page. The best part is that they tell a story! Highly recomended for young toddlers.

The silly goose is looking for the perfect spot for her nest, but it seems all the good spots are taken until she finds the farmer's hat. Large, soft illustrations with a gentle repetitive text make this an ideal picture book for toddlers. Observant readers will enjoy spotting the farmer's hat on each page.

Plot: 3/5 A Goose tries to find a place to lay her eggs but keeps geting kicked out of other animals' places (chicken coop, pig sty etc...).
Illustrations: 5/5. Definitely the best part of the book. the illustrations are large and beautiful, and I love the small hint of the hat fluttering in the background each page.
Rhymes: N/A
Fun to read: 2/5. Though I love saying "Silly little goose" whenever goose gets kicked out, there's very little text throughout. So it's a bit quick of a read. Not as fun as I'd like it to be.

In this book, goose is looking for a place to build her nest. She wanders around the farm, but keeps ending up in the wrong place and someone says "silly little goose!" Eventually, she finds the right place and builds her nest. The kids like answering "is that good place for her to build her nest?" Also, the kids can guess what place she is going to go next through the pictures. It builds print motivation.
Point out the picture of the farm with all the buildings and places where the goose ends up.

There are only a few lines for every two-page spread, so this one is perfect for babies and toddlers.

Even the little ones can join in the game of looking for the blown-away hat in every picture (and since the hat is the goose's final destination you're helping them learn some narrative convention, too!)

However, because this book is really best suited for the smallest children, it may be a good idea to just get the board book version instead. It's the same book, not abridged or anything.

This is a picture book and it is intended for the readers of the nursery age group. This book is about a goose who is looking for the perfect place to lay her eggs. The goose eventually comes accross the farmers hat and decides that the hat is the perfect spot to lay and hatch her eggs. Children who like animals would find this book appealing as it has many different animals in it. I would read this book before going on a trip to the farm. The print is huge and the pictures are realistic.

This was the first book that I read during a storyhour in public!

It was a great read for toddlers because of all of the repetition, silly little goose. This book works well for farm themes, and could also work well for Spring, and little babies arriving on the farm.

Overall, this is a great choice for toddlers!!

A goose was trying to find a nest. She went into a pig's home, and she went into a cat's home and a chicken's home. And then those were all not good homes. And then she went to a hat, and that was the perfect spot. And she laid her eggs there. And then after a few days, the eggs hatched and turned into chicks. -by Felicity

The book is about a goose trying to find a home to nest and lay her little eggs. She keeps thinking she's found the right home, but they all turn out to be homes occupied by other farm animals.
This would be a great book to teach children about different farm animals and where they rest when they're at the farm.

Poor Goose! She just wants to make her nest, but all the places she finds are already taken. But Goose never gives up. And before long peep! peep! she ³hatches² a surprise for everyone! Clever chant-along text, lively illustrations, and an endearingly bewildered heroine assure this cheery picture book a place in every child¹s heart.

Silly Little Goose keeps trying to find the perfect place to make her nest. With this book, I stop at each place Little Goose does and ask the kids if this is a good place for a goose to lay her eggs. When they say "No". I encourage them to say, "Silly Little Goose!" This book is best for the younger storytime set. perhaps ages 2-4 yr.

A simple story about a goose looking for a nest to call her own. As Goose wanders around the farm to other animals' homes, little ones can see other farm animals and practice the animal sounds of full grown and baby animals. A short story that will grow well with a child through their toddler years.

My 2-year-old has been requesting this one frequently since we checked it out from the library. Her favorite part is exclaiming "Silly little goose!" on each page as goose searches for a place to nest.

Throughout the book Goose is trying to find a place to make her nest but everywhere she tries is occupied. She doesn't give up and finally she finds the perfect spot, an old hat. It teaches children to keep persuing things they really want/need.

Although this book is available in the library's collection, I bought this the other day at Savers in Providence because it's so perfect for story time: just a few words on each page and wonderfully large illustrations.

The variety of animals seems to appeal to many children and the hunt to find a good spot for a goose to lay her eggs can remind children of all the spots they look for to do simply things in their lives.

This book is directed towards younger ages. The illustrations help aid reading by making the story predicable by looking where the goose was going to go next and the repetition used helps guide reading also

Silly Goose needs a place for a nest, but always seems to choose one that some other animal is using. Will Silly Goose find a spot to lay her eggs? I have always been very fond of Nancy Tafuir's illustrations of farm animals.

A silly little goose is trying to find where to lay her eggs and all the nice places she finds are the nests of other animals. Finally she builds a nest in a hat and lays her eggs.

Cute story, could be funny based on how you tell it to the kids, emphasizing how silly the goose is.

This book would be a good book for little children around kindergarten age. It is a good book that has a pattern kids could follow and start to read the book along with you.

Another one that benefits from multiple readings with small one. And boy have we read this a lot this year. E. has learned animals and sounds and followed the hat.
