Hidden in Shadows

Rate this book
An intruder in her house? But why? Tea shop owner Krista Yates has nothing worth stealing, and Wentworth, Michigan, is hardly a danger zone…or is it? DEA agent Luke McIntyre warns Krista that the prowler has some dangerous connections, and that she needs around-the-clock protection. Luke's presence in her life is a bit too easy to get used to—and his growing presence in her heart makes her dread saying goodbye. But her nonstop defender can't hide Krista away forever. And there's more than her safety—or her love—at risk when the threat steps out of the shadows again.

Accused of being an eternal optimist, I was born and raised in the Midwest and migrated to the Pacific Northwest a few years ago. I began spinning tales of intrigue and adventure when I was in grade school, and wrote my first book when I was eleven a thriller that ended with a mysterious phone call the reader never heard!

My college sweetheart and I have been married for over 20 years and are blessed with two wonderful sons, a bossy kitty and feisty Golden Retriever.

When not dreaming up inspirational tales, I’m usually out hiking in the Cascade Mountains, enjoying a fine cup of tea with friends, or hiding out in a movie theatre. I love to hear from readers! [email protected]

The growth of Krista and Luke's relationship is believable, although the proposal felt rushed. The mystery portion of this novel had enough surprises to keep me guessing, but possibly too many red herrings.

I DNF'd. I'm sorry. I just couldn't take it.

Why is it all the Christian romances I have picked up so far this run have an overbearing man who just steamrolls the main lady AND IT'S POTRAYED AS PERFECTLY ACCEPTABLE AND ROMANTIC???

Example 1: Luke decides he's staying in Krista's house. She says no, he steamrolls her and even gets the police chief in on it!!! Krista finally breaks down and tells him he can sleep above the garage but he is NOT sleeping in her house cause he's a perfect stranger. He relents and sleeps above the garage where he has a clear view of her bedroom window....um, eeew. For her safety...right. Plus, that's not legal. Just saying. Go sleep in your car on the street, bub. She said no!

Example 2: Luke decides Krista MUST have a dog. They argue about it somewhere in the pages numbered in 60s. Krista tells him no. She has a cat who hates everyone. She works in a tea shop and the dog would be alone. Not just alone, but alone WITH THE CAT. Her answer is a hard no. He tells her he doesn't care, she's getting one. She asks what would they do with the dog when everything is over and he leaves. She doesn't have time to be taking care of a dog. He tells her they'll deal with it when they get there.

So now, not only are you steamrolling Krista, you are saying the dog doesn't matter long term??? She is saying she's does not want a dog, doesn't have time for it and does not want to keep it when he leaves. He don't care. Poor covid-like scenario dog. A good tool until he doesn't need you anymore and then they plan to potentially toss you back in the pound. (I assume she ends up keeping the dog in the happily ever after but I never got there. It's the principal of the thing at this point)

Fast forward to the pages numbered in the 90s, Luke just DECIDES nope, she is definitely needs a dog and he is NOT taking no for an answer and makes her drive a county over to get a random dog from the pound there. After she said no, again. I feel like he may have sorta gaslighted her using his 'injury' as the extra excuse to make her do what he wants. I don't like it.

I also find it laughable that a freshly rescued pound pup would be protecting the house in less than an hour or two upon getting it home. Right. And it's like, the perfect dog. Sigh

I just...no. I don't like this sexist vibe going on. Luke is pushy and doesn't respect the boundaries Krista puts down. Krista is too... soft. She tells the men in her life, no no no, but never gets angry or pissed off when they continue to press. Instead she either lets them do what they want, even though it's her life, or continues to take their sexist bullsh*t. Like Allan and his need to date her, or Luke and his sleeping in her house and the dog scenario.

The only fight she continually refuses to lose is the fight to keep her business open when everyone keeps telling her to close it because she needs the revenue to keep living her life. Fair. However, after being shot at, and the restaurant AND the house being broken into and herself being assaulted...I think I would revisit that thought. Or leave it to the employees to run the place as best they can. It's a dumb place for her to be holding her ground. Tell Allan where to stick it. At this point you're not being a polite person but leading him on by putting up with all the unwanted touching and affection.

Conclusion

I can't take the sexist atmosphere we are supposed to believe is romantic. I can't get behind a romantic interest that forces the person to do things they don't want to do. No. Just, no.

So, here am I saying, no.

I’m not religious but I found this book for forty-five cents at the local thrift and i’ve been on a mystery kick lately so, why not? It’s pretty corny and very predictable. I’d say the second the character in question was introduced I knew something was up with them. I read it quickly though and it was a very easy read, so two stars for that.

This is Ms. White's debut with Love Inspired. Krista and Luke both have trauma's from their childhoods that are holding them back from commitment. The dangers of a cartel stalker bring them together. I enjoyed the mystery and their journey to HEA.

Great story . . . suspense, lots of it, and didn't have it all figured out . . . lots of possibilities. Main characters had a deep story and got their happily ever after.

This book basically had something in it for everyone. If you were looking for a romance novel, a mystery that'll keep you guessing, or even if you want something with a hint of religion in it; this book has just that. I loved the pace of the story for the most part. I do feel that the proposal was rushed. How long have they known each other? Maybe a couple of months, which is definitely not long enough to know whether you want to marry someone or not. But as I digress, I liked this story and the characters in it as well, especially Luke.

Upon her return from a Missions trip to Mexico. Krista finds her house all torn up. Thinking her cat was at it again, little does she know what else awaits her........I enjoyed this book, and has a little bit of everything in it. Romance, mystery, Christian theme and just a all around good book. My first Love Inspired Supense book and will be looking forward to reading more!

This is the first of Hope White's books that I read. Far as I'm concerned, it was the best. A very good read with suspense and some reluctant romance along the way.
I really enjoyed this a long time ago.
