“I love boxing. I love Hallmark movies. I love fishing. I love scrapbooking. Nope, I've never fit into the boxes people have wanted to put me in. ~Robin Caroll is definitely a contradiction, but one that beckons you to get to know her better.
Robin’s passion has always been to tell stories to entertain others and come alongside them on their faith journey—aspects Robin weaves into each of her published novels.
Best-selling author of more than twenty-seven novels, ROBIN CAROLL writes Southern stories of mystery and suspense, with a hint of romance to entertain readers. Her books have been recognized in several awards, including the Carol Award, HOLT Medallion, Daphne du Maurier, RT Reviewer’s Choice Award, and more.
When she isn’t writing, Robin spends quality time with her husband of twenty-eight-plus years, her three beautiful daughters and two handsome grandsons, and their character-filled pets at home.
Robin serves the writing community as Executive/Conference Director for ACFW.
Coming home from a wonderful evening with your girlfriend to find the mother you adore had been stabbed is devastating. And that’s only the beginning to this rollercoaster ride. Filled with suspense, mystery, adventure, and even romance, In the Shadow of Evil grabbed my attention from the very get-go.
This adventure was beautifully written. This is the first time I have read a book by Robin Caroll and it won’t be my last. Her writing captivates the reader, taking them inside the character’s head. The way it was written made it such a personal read so much more impacting. I loved every minute I spent in this book.
The message in this story was clear it’s on forgiveness. Forgiving people who have wronged you in the past. It’s much easier to say than do in many instances. Maddox and Layla both had to learn to forgive those who had hurt them. And in doing so, they discovered a wonderful peace and close relationship with God that they didn’t have before.
The mystery was great! The few scenes of “him made me so curious to discover who “he was! Little clues are dropped along the way, feeding the ‘sleuth-wannabe side of me. At the end, when things began coming to light, I was really impressed with the detail of the mystery. How clever “he was though he was no match for Maddox and Layla.
The story between Maddox and Layla was sweet. Maddox begins as a man who doesn’t ever want to be tied down to just one woman. Until he meets Layla. She stops him almost dead in his tracks with her winsome ways and strong faith in God. I loved their first encounter how Layla reacted to Maddox hard stare was exactly what I would have done! There was nothing inappropriate about their love story that I need point out, besides a few kisses towards the end. Only thing is once a female character is refered to as 'hot' and 'sexy'.
There is a murder involved, but nothing that I found very gruesome. At the very end, the book suddenly took a turn that left me reeling just a bit. It didn’t ruin the book for me, just was a curveball I had not seen coming. At all! But it wrapped up the story very well! I recommend this book to any mystery lovers out there who have been looking for a elaborate mystery to figure out!
Eternal Springs Louisiana seems to be a quiet town. They are rebuilding from hurricanes in past years and there are those out there who are not quite honest in their practices.
A new home has just been finished for a Mom and her four children. As it sets empty two men enter but only one man leaves. The other man is dead and burning along with the home.
Detectives Maddox Bishop and Houston Wallace are assigned the murder case. Their leads take them to two sisters. Layla Taylor is the owner of Taylor Construction. Her company had built the home. Alana Taylor, her younger sister, runs Second Chances. She calls it a retreat but it is more like a drug rehab center. Some of her charges had helped on the house.
Other people are getting sick and dying with an odd illness.
Layla and Maddox both hold unforgiving hearts towards a parent.
This book is a focus on forgiveness.
As the case goes on Robin is good about having several people looking guilty and there are always other things going on. Definitely no lag in the story lines.
I enjoyed the catch phrases she gave a couple of the characters. And one of them has to overcome a fear to help in a crisis.
Robin Carroll contacted several of us at NARI about two years ago to ask questions about remodeling contractors and specifically our CotY (Contractor of the Year) Awards program. Her protagonist is a contractor who starts out at the beginning of the book by being notified that she's a regional CotY winner. The project she won for plays a prominent role in the rest of the story, with the story ending at her attendance of NARI's Evening of Excellence Awards.
At this year's Evening of Excellence in New Jersey, Robin Carroll was our featured guest, autographing copies of the book that were given to each attendee, courtesy of Eldorado Stone. Our CotY winners were thrilled that the CotY program was recognized in such a unique way, by being part of a plotline of a book!
I really like Robin Carolls books. This is a story of love, murder, deception, forgiveness and Salvation. just when you think the story is over there is another bombshell dropped to end the story.
Informed by the real-life fallout of the U.S. economy and devastation caused by multiple hurricanes along the southern coast, In the Shadow of Evil tells a modern day story involving the exposure of a building rebound scam. Amidst the layers of unethical practices, supply shortages, and excess murders, a top Louisiana homicide detective loses his heart to a charitable contractor while uncovering a secret about his tragic past.
Alana Taylor runs the Second Chances rehabilitation center in Eternal Springs, Louisiana. When the clients have reached a certain plateau of reliability, some are hired by the local construction companies to work on site.
Layla Taylor, Alana’s sister, runs Taylor Construction, the only female-owned construction company, which she opened when their father died. She had recently won the CotY award for constructing the latest Homes of Hope project. However, arson quickly takes it down, with a murdered man found inside the ruins.
Detectives Maddox Bishop and Houston Wallace of the Calcasieu Sheriff’s office were on call when the fire broke out in the Homes of Hope building, and were called in when an anonymous body was found in the ashes.
Since Layla knew the construction owners, electricians, plumbers, and suppliers, she takes on the responsibility of “helping the detectives find the perpetrator, looking for anything/anyone out of the ordinary on their sites. This does not sit well with the person responsible, since she could connect this person to the incidences that occur.
In the opening pages of In the Shadow of Evil, Robin starts out with a heart-wrenching murder scene. From that opening, the action explodes fast and furious into additional scenes that demand your full attention to details. When you think you have it all down, she springs another scene that instantly pulls you in another direction. This continues from page one to very last page, fast and furious.
Interspersed within the scenes, possible suspects, and twisting plots, there blows the mild winds of romance. Neither party is open to another romantic relationship due to past hurts and betrayals, but Robin slowly winds them into the web of love. The only part I wasn’t so sure of was how much an officer can get involved with a suspect/client romantically while a case is still in progress. That could easily be my own views based on my legal background.
Although the bulk of the story revolves around the murders and love relationships, Robin deliberately opens the doors to deal with forgiveness and reconciliation in the lives of these two young loves. Bitterness keeps both from forming that relationship built on true love. Robin beautifully and thoughtfully brought both characters to the point of brokenness, bringing tears to my eyes on both accounts. Most importantly, their personal relationship with the Lord is dealt with as well.
I was amazed at how realistic the characters were; how well Robin developed each of the characters personalities. I could easily relate to each of the main characters, and would love to have friends like them in my life. Definitely a great read!
This book was provided by Jeane Wynn, President of Wynn-Wynn Media in exchange for my honest review.
I read Deliver Us From Evil and loved the action, adventure, humor and spiritual thread in it. I anxiously awaited the review copy of In the Shadow of Evil.
Layla is a female contractor following in her father’s foot steps after his untimely death. Layla has been nominated for a building award she’s worked hard to achieve. Tragedy strikes the House of Hope home she entered into the contest. The shadow of evil clouds her chances of winning the award when the house burns to the ground. Crazy thing about the fire is the body they discover among the ashes. The CSI team scrambles to disclose the body’s identity and glean for clues that will uncover the murderer!
Detective Maddox and his partner arrive at the burned house and see a body. Because of Maddox’s experience and the clues he discovers in the rubble, he suspects arson, and is convinced Layla set the fire. He’s certain he’ll find the proof he needs to expose a building rebound scam he knows is operating in this city. Layla’s case adds one more piece to the puzzle to help uncover unethical practices to creatively fulfill the supply shortage and reveal the mastermind behind the scheme.
Layla doesn’t like how slow the detectives are going to “prove her innocence. She definitely feels they’ve stamped her guilty already. So, she sets out to play detective herself. Things start to heat up as she pokes around. Another house is set on fire and she’s the suspect again. Could she let go and let God work on her behalf?
This is an intriguing story set in the Louisiana, Bayou based on the real-life fallout of the U.S. economy plus devastation caused by multiple hurricanes along the southern coast. I enjoyed the tough, yet tender Layla and the emotionally wounded, chauvinistic Detective Maddox. I liked how this author showed God working in their lives for His glory and their good, when they let Him! I liked the believable characters and the spiritual struggle they went though on their way to giving and accepting forgiveness; of course I liked the drama, mystery and suspense as well. I’m looking forward to the next action adventure story from Robin Caroll.

3.5 stars. In the Shadow of Evil was the first Robin Caroll novel I've read. It was an entertaining romantic suspense, set in small-town Louisiana.
Layla Taylor owns her own contracting company and has always had to fight to prove herself in a male-dominated business. When a Homes of Hope home is mysteriously burned to the ground, and worse, the body of a property inspector turns up in the ashes, Layla, her sister, and her company are in danger of being implicated. Maddox Bishop is a hardened homicide detective assigned to the case. He gradually uncovers a tangled web of unethical practices and suppliers, but of course he and Layla's relationship begins to turn into something more personal. At the same time, he struggles with his own rocky relationship with his father and unresolved guilt over his mother's murder years before. Layla struggles with her own inability to forgive her mother for her past mistreatment.
It was a well-written story that kept me interested. The mystery was well-done...the outcome wasn't trite or predictable, and there was a very interesting twist at the end that really caught me by surprise! I thought the main characters were well-developed and likable. I especially liked Houston, Maddox's partner. He was a typical crusty old codger of a detective with a soft heart hiding beneath his gruff exterior. The resolution of both Layla's relationship with her mother and Maddox's with his father were touching and authentic, but I found the other spiritual aspects of the story a bit flat for some reason. Both Maddox's struggle with God and Layla's established faith struck me as a bit shallow and lacking depth for some reason. The spiritual aspect just wasn't woven into the fabric of the story as well as it could have been. It just didn't seem like an integral part...it could have been removed without really affecting the main storyline negatively.
Still, I found In the Shadow of Evil an entertaining, pleasurable read. The main plot was interesting and unpredictable...it kept me guessing. While not profoundly spiritually moving, it was an enjoyable book. I wouldn't mind reading more by Ms. Caroll in the future. If you enjoy good, clean, romantic suspense that you can't solve in the first couple of chapters, you'll probably enjoy In the Shadow of Evil!

Maybe if I hadn't been born and reared in Sulphur, LA and have been working at the CPSO for ten years I wouldn't have been so annoyed with the mistakes in this book. Great concept...just poorly executed. Caroll apparently did research on the CotY awards but not on the sheriff's department where her main character worked. First, right within the first couple of pages, she mentions the detective is planning on putting in for the Commander position because his current Commander is thinking of running for Sheriff of a small bayou town in the parish. Okay, Sheriffs are parish-wide. You cannot be a sheriff of a town. I don't know anywhere in the US that a Sheriff is over a town and not a parish/county. Municipalities are run by Police Chiefs. That's something Caroll could have just checked on Google if she didn't want to make a simple phone call. Second, short of a new Sheriff coming in and completely changing people and their positions around, a detective (considered a Sergeant) does not get promoted to Commander. The ranking system works as follows: Detective (Sgt), Senior Sgt. Detective, Lt. over a Detective department (Sex Crimes, Burglary and Theft, Violent Crimes, Juveniles, etc), Captain over Investigations, then Commander of Investigations. A simple phone would have explained this. Third, in the book the female contractor, who's lived in the area her whole life, smells rotten eggs coming from corrosive pipes in a building to which I immediately associate with Sulfur. Seeing as how I'm from Sulphur and the city got its name from the sulfur mines it's not a hard connection to make for a native. However, the contractor took a third of the book to realize this. Not too mention all the people who'd been smelling that and never questioned if sulfur was to blame. Now, if I wasn't from here I may not have had such an issue but I just feel an author should do a little research when writing a book and using actual locations, business, etc. If you want full creative license then make everything up.
When you read the prologue of a book and are immediately intrigued, you can bet that it’s going to be a great story. This is what I’ve come to expect from each Robin Caroll book I’ve picked up and her latest book, In The Shadow Of Evil did not disappoint me.
Robin Caroll is a master at combining suspense and romance into a substantial plot and taking her readers on a ride that leaves them breathless. If you enjoy settling in with a good “who done it? murder mystery, this one is for you! Just don’t start it at bedtime because you run the risk of staying up way too late to finish it.
Layla Taylor is a feisty woman who has worked hard to make her place in a man’s world. Having recently won Contractor of the Year, Layla is on cloud nine as she receives news that she is up for the national award. Thrilled over finally receiving the recognition she’s worked so hard for, the victory is short lived when her Hopes for Homes charity house is burned to the ground. To make matters worse, a dead body is found inside.
Maddox Bishop is a troubled homicide detective trying to work his way up in the ranks and is immediately attracted to Layla when he’s called out to investigate the arson related to her charity house. Layla and Maddox both have trust issues and find it hard to bond even though they are both attracted to each other. Their hurts from the past make them leery of commitment. As they are dealing with their pasts and trying to move on in life, they have to decide if their futures include one another.
Trust, forgiveness and reliance on God are the central themes of this book. I appreciated Robin’s incorporation of “The Roman Road in the story and how she used it in a way that was completely relevant to the character and the story. Maddox Bishop is man who has been soul searching for years and in this book he’s presented with opportunity to make a decision to follow Christ.
Layla is a contractor. An unusual profession for a woman. But she is very good at her work. In fact she has just been nominated for a prestigious award. When one of the homes that she has built burns down and a dead body is found in the remains Layla becomes a suspect.
Maddox is the detective working the case. He too is good at his job. His one regret is that he was never able to find the person who murdered his mother. With a broken relationship with his father, and resentment towards a God that would allow his mother to die Maddox is only too willing to believe the worst of Layla.
Layla decides that she is going to try to discover who burned the house and murdered the person inside. While seeking answers from the various people that she contracted to work the site the killer realizes that she needs to be warned off. Layla is side-tracked when people she knows are brought to the hospital with bleeding noses that won’t stop and respiratory problems. The doctors can’t figure out what is the common denominator in the symptoms and they can’t identify what is causing the symptoms.
When Layla’s sister Alana’s fiance is hurt in an explosion, Maddox and his partner decide that they need to protect Layla from whomever is trying to hurt her. With their growing attraction for each other sparks fly! But Layla’s faith baffles Maddox. As the mystery unfolds and relationships are mended Maddox begins to see how faith is an important part of our existence.
As the killer becomes more desperate Maddox and Layla race the clock to find out the reason behind the killings. Will they be in time to prevent another tragedy?
Robin Caroll has written an excitement-filled story that will keep the reader wanting to turn the pages until the very end.
In the Shadow of Evil by Robin Caroll is the third book in the Evil romantic suspense series. Maddox Bishop is investigating an arson/murder at a brand new house that brings him to question Layla Taylor, the contractor for the building. Sparks quickly fly between the two, but Maddox keeps finding connections between Layla and the crimes that are popping up all over town: three mysterious deaths that seem to be tied to her church, her office is robbed, and the rehabilitation center her sister, Alana, runs is bombed. But the crimes are all tied to Layla because the culprit is desperate to keep her from discovering his identity. Meanwhile Maddox is dealing with his prickly relationship with his father that stems from his mother's murder years earlier, and Layla hasn't seen her mother in eight years since her drug overdose left her with a permanent brain injury. The couple must deal with their pasts before they can build a future together, and that is threatened by a killer who will stop at nothing to hide his sins. Each book in this series is essentially a stand-alone with minimal reference to the characters from the previous book. Maddox was a cop in Fear No Evil, but you don't need to have read that to enjoy this novel. Caroll is very good at creating nail-biting suspense, and the scene where Layla faces the murderer is a heart-stopper. One flaw in the book is that by naming Maddox' partner Houston, a dramatic scene becomes unintentionally funny by the inclusion of the phrase, "Houston, we have a problem," This is a solid series sure to please fans of Christian fiction with plenty of romance and suspense.
This book is Maddox story. We met Maddox in Fear No Evil and I was looking forward to get to know him better.
When Maddox was a teenager he found his mother stabbed in her bedroom, after he was late for curfew. She died in his arms. His father blamed Maddox for her death, while he was away for his job and not much at home himself. Maddox never had a good relationship with his father.
Layla is a constructor with her own business. She just won a prize with a Hope for Homes project, but soon that house burns down and a body was found inside. The man in the house was shot before the house burned down. That is where Maddox and his partner come in. They are investigators and good at their jobs. Many awful things are happening around Layla and with the people she loves. Who is after her? And why?
Maddox had sworn he didn’t need a woman. They only meant trouble. Last time he was dating his mother got murdered. But when he meets Layla something is happening inside of him. She’s different and he likes that. But Layla isn’t looking for a man. After the break up with her last boyfriend she has built a wall around her heart. And then there’s another issue Layla is a believer, but Maddox doesn’t believe in God. Can Maddox take Layla’s walls down? And will Maddox find healing and love with the One he needs the most?
This book is full twists and turns. Little by little we get more glimpses of the bad guy, but it’s not easy to figure out who he is. That’s what I like in a suspense story, that makes me flip the pages faster and faster. In the Shadow of Evil is a fantastic read with a satisfying end.
Layla Taylor has become successful in a man's business. She was a top contractor for her area, in fact she had won an award, and she was even nominated on the next level for another award. Things are going great for her, but a fire at a Homes of Hope house leaves a murdered man, and leaves Layla in the eye of suspicion. How will she clear her name? Is she the target? She is not sure the police department will be able to clear up this mystery before her business is ruined. She starts poking around, asking questions, which leads to more crime and violence. Her office is broken into, her records destroyed with her computers. Her sister's life work at Second Chance is threatened when a bomb explodes in the main residence and seriously injures her fiance. Plus a mysterious illness is striking down people in her church. It is a scary time for Layla, will her faith carry her through all this? And why did the detective on this case make her nervous, what was it about him that made her pulse race? The attraction between them bothers her, she knows he isn't a Christian, and that is a big thing to overcome.
I loved this book, and could not put it down. Robin Carroll's books are always so enjoyable, it is so nice to read a good mystery/suspense novel that is centered around Christ. Great book! 4.5 stars, 297 pages US $14.99

Title: IN THE SHADOW OF EVIL Author: Robin Caroll Publisher: Broadman & Holman March 2011 Genre: Fiction/Christian/Suspense ISBN: 978-0-0854-4981-5
Layla Taylor is a female contractor in a man’s world. And a ball-room dancer in her spare time. But that isn’t enough to keep her busy. Someone has targeted her projects for destruction, and she’s going to find out who. And why.

And that’s where he discovers Layla.
Smitten, confused, disarmed, and more than understandably upset, Maddox struggles to separate fantasy and reality, as the body count keeps rising.
These are the bare bones of what I’ve found to be one of the most compelling Christian suspense novels I’ve ever come across. The characters are realistic, the scenes are very well written, the suspense is gripping, and the romance makes it beyond wonderful. If Christian suspense is your bag, then IN THE SHADOW OF EVIL is your next book. But first, gather your munchies, get into your pajamas, and grab a thermos of coffee. Because once you begin reading, you aren’t going to want to get up for anything. 300 pages. $14.99.

"In the Shadow of Evil" is a Christian romantic suspense novel. It's the third in a series, but it's essentially a stand-alone novel. You don't need to read the previous novels to understand this one, and reading this novel first will spoil only the romantic outcome of the second novel.
The characters were likable, complex, and dealt with realistic struggles. The main theme was forgiveness. The suspense was created by physical danger to the main characters and conflict between the romantic pair. The setting details were sparse, but there were a fair amount of job details (for police, contractor, and "halfway house") woven into the story.
Some of the main characters were Christians. One main character believed in God, but he didn't believe God was good. There was some praying and some Scripture remembered by the characters.
There was no sex. I don't recall any bad language (but if it was there, it was in the "he cussed" style). Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable, suspenseful novel to those who like romantic suspense.
I received this book as a review copy from the publisher.
'In The Shadow Of Evil' is the third book in the Evil Series. I have read the first two books - Deliver Us From Evil, Fear No Evil - and 'In The Shadow Of Evil may very well be the best one yet. I love romance suspense stories and this book fits nicely in that category.
The book starts out with a woman being murdered years ago and then transforms into the present time. Layla Taylor, a female contractor, is nominated to win an award but then tragedy strikes - one of her projects is destroyed by an arsonist. To make matters worse, a body is found in what remains of the house. As the danger grows, so does an attraction between Detective Maddox Bishop and Layla Taylor...but can he solve the case before something deadly happens to Layla?
'In The Shadow Of Evil' was really interesting and easy to read. There is a twist in this book, but not with the arsonist....there is much more that I want to say but I think that if I do it will spoil some of the book for you.
I recommend 'In The Shadow Of Evil' if you like reading books that have both romance and suspense!
I have finished In the Shadow of Evil. Both Maddox and Layla have had very serious tragedies in their lives that have shaped the path that each took professionally. Maddox became a cop after finding his murdered mother in their home at the age of 17. Layla's love for her father motivated her to become a contractor like her father. But while Maddox's faith was lost Layla clung to hers. Maddox and his dad never had the relationship that they wanted after his mother was killed and it was beautiful to watch how the Lord brings them back together. In the end Maddox does solve the murder of his mother and I must say I did not see it coming. Layla's mother had ended up in an vegetative state and Layla has to come to terms with what happened to put her there.
I loved this book and highly reccommend it!! Thank you Mrs. Caroll
This book is a story of deceit and murder, but also one of faith and love. In the Shadow of Evil is an in-depth, well written tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat and you won't be able to put it down. One man's goal for wealth, which he thinks will win him custody of his kids, leads him to a life of betrayal, deceit and murder. Lives of those around him will start to crumble. As some things fall apart, secrets are slowly revealed.
All around the evil, is tremendous faith, love and forgiveness, at work throughout the story. In the Shadow of Evil is a book I will enjoy reading again and will recommend to everyone I know. The suspense keeps you on edge, but the faith and love makes this a book you'll be happy you didn't miss! I completely enjoyed this book and I look forward to reading more from Ms. Caroll.
A story of murder, mystery, faith and love. What a great combination. Maddox became a detective in hopes of one day solving his mother's murder. He has turned his back on God because of his mother's murder. Layla, a successful contractor has a great relationship with God. She will need to rely on her faith when a home she has built burns to the ground and a dead body is found inside.
These two must work together as more of her projects are destroyed and she is threatened. This is a wonderful suspense filled story where we watch God work in lives and a romance blossom. This is a book full of God's messages in a non-preachy way. The suspense kept me turning pages. My mother borrowed it and finished it in two days, and she is a slow reader. This is a book I most definitely will recommend to all of my friends.
Robin Caroll has this amazing gift for suspense/thriller writing that is almost creepy. Why? Because she takes topics and scenarios that could happen right at home and then brings them to life and it has you looking over your shoulder and wondering if that very thing could be happening in your own neighborhood! Child trafficking rings, gang warfare and now scams and unethical practices in a Habitat for Humanity type business. It makes me wonder where she comes up with these stories, but scared to ask... all I know is that I absolutely love her books and her writing and this Evil series ("Deliver Us From Evil", "Fear No Evil" and "In The Shadow of Evil") is fantastic!
The story was good but had some weak points. I liked it enough to finish the book. The characters were intereting and a few aspects of their backgrounds and personalities could have been better developed. I figured out the mystery way ahead of time but that does not usually bother me in enjoying a book. WARNING-SPOILER ALERT--The author never really explained in enough depth why Maddox was afraid of heights. It was stated but not in enough depth realitive to its importance later in the story. The other point not adequately developed is Maddox's and his father's response to the solving of Maddox's mother's murder.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I was a bit intimidated when I started reading this book. I am not at all into scary movies, books, etc. and that is what the cover of this book reminds me of.
However, the evil alluded to is the evil of the heart of men. Those who will step on anyone it takes to make it another rung up the ladder. Those who will take advantage and use anyone and everything around them for their benefit.
After is realized that I didn't need to be afraid of getting spooked from reading this book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Definitely a great read!
This is a suspense of coffee, construction, and church. Building contractor Layla solves a construction-related mystery while detective Maddox solves a series of murders. Meanwhile, the imperfect characters encounter a strong Christian message as they struggle with dreadful relationships with their parents. Creative and timely subject material, along with an unusual dramatic structure, make this a fascinating suspense novel. I enjoyed the quirkiness of the characters--particularly Layla's "Splinters!" interjection. There is, of course, a romantic subplot (totally G-rated). The writing isn't necessarily brilliant, but it does a fine job of sweeping the reader along through the plot.
