I received Zeus' Spark in return for an honest review.
Beth has only been at Halfling Academy for a short period of time when classmates start going missing. She's only just learned about being the daughter of Zeus, and his demigod heir at the moment. It's up to Beth and her bestie Raven to figure out what's happening to the Academy before it's to late. They are sent on a quest with Raven's boyfriend Greyson a wolf shifter and the one boy that Beth was hoping to avoid Jayden. Together to set out to save their missing classmates but along the way they learn that this is only the beginning.
I really liked Beth she's perfect as our heroine she's not perfect but I think that's what makers her so charming. Next is Raven the daughter of Ares which makes an excellent fighter and supportive best friend. The guys are Greyson who is a werewolf shifter his mate is Raven which is a unique pair. Last but not least is Jayden he broke Beth's heart and ever since has been trying to win her back. The more time they spend together the harder it is for her to stay mad at him.
I love the demigod concept as I'm a little obsessed with mythology fiction novels. I only had one complaint I wanted to read Beth's story before she arrived at the academy I felt I missed out on some key information. Plus I would have enjoyed Beth and Jaydens love story from the beginning. However, the story is peppered with little teasers of what happened in the past which I liked. The story was fast paced, action packed and steamy all my favorite things. I had a hard time putting it down because I wanted to know what they would encounter next. The author has done a beautiful job creating a captivating story that captures the heart as well as the imagination and I can't wait for the next one. Perfect for fans of mythology.
When starting this book, I definitely got very strong Percy Jackson vibes - the demi-god school/camp with wards that are failing and monsters breaking in. Once she is sent on her mission though, the action and adventure are uniquely Beth's! It is clear that the author is either really familiar with Greek mythology or did her research as I love all of the different monsters she had in there as well as the different Gods/Goddesses. I appreciate that she gave just enough description of them that I didn't feel I had to always google what she was talking about without making me feel like she was beating me over the head with the descriptions. Her mission partners are awesome - though I wanted to shake her a few times as she torments one of them throughout (some of it was deserved, but some of it seemed excessive!)! It is has a great slow burn romance that plays in well to the overall story and doesn't take away from plot, which I appreciate. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys a LOT of action, adventure and a spitfire female main character in a fantastical book!

At the Halfling Academy, where the demigods go, they are in the upper teens to twenties. Raven is the daughter of the God of War, Ares. They don’t get sick and a lot of people are missing. In one of the classes they learn about what humans think of as myths, like the Nemean Lion and Heracles. A monster gets through the wards and Raven and some of the others fight it. Beth is the last living demigod child of Zeus. All of the monsters want a piece of Beth. Jayden is both annoying and heroic as he is interested in Beth, but he hurt her. He is a child of Hades. I adore one of Raven’s brothers, Dax. Ares, Apollo and Athena are all gods with battle magic yet only Raven stayed behind with Beth to fight. Dax got there late. Made me wanna hit something. I also liked Draven, one of the children of Hermes. I found him hysterical, but then again, Hermes is awesome at being funny, a prankster and good at warding. Adrian, one of Apollo’s is fun too, as he has the gift of prophecy.
I mean every single monster is after Beth and she has to go on a quest, sent by the Oracle. There are a freaking bazillion monsters after her. Zeus spark has been stolen. They need to get it back FAST! Thank goodness Raven, her shifter boyfriend/mate Greyson, and Jayden. Oh and don’t forget that as a child of Zeus, she is on Hera’s list to be punished, is the nicest word I could think of. In some ways this book is like the adult version of Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson series and a shifter romance mash up. Omg its absolutely crazy and fun and the fight scenes are awesome! It’s a total emotional roller coaster! I can’t wait for the next book!
Some of the Gods show up along the way, which is way cool.

This is a well written story with Greek mythology roots. The MC is the child of Zeus and her friends are all children of various gods and goddesses. Their school is for demigods where they are getting attacked by various monsters that Hercules once killed. The MC is named champion to stop it and find the missing students. Along the way she finds love although the story ends with a cliffhanger and surprising kiss. There is a fun best friend and her fated mate. Its going to be an interesting series, With all the twists, turns and challenges they have had in the first one. It will be very exciting to see what happens next.

Well written and developed story with paranormal characters. Interesting reality and background that adds to the story. Good action twists and turns. Enjoyable and relaxing read.

This book takes you into the world of demigods and some very interesting twist and turns that will keep on the edge of your seat wanting to know each action packed mission they must face. This read has some steamy elements, some very funny moments especially the rhythming fountain, when you read it you will see, but it also has serious aspects and a ton of emotional moments that will make you mad and want to cry. This also gives you the perfect Alphahole that's gets put on his place by a bad*** female and her awesome BFF read and find out. Absolutely amazing can't wait for the next.
I am obsessed with all books that are based off of the Greek Gods, and this one did not disappoint!!! It has a misunderstood enemies to lovers type vibe that is a slow torture (in a very good way) Beth goes on adventure with her friends, and gets help with the Gods along the way with the requirement of side quests. I love the slight cross into the paranormal world! One thing that I struggled with was the characters definitely said f*** way to much for my liking and normally that doesn’t bother me but it went a little to far with how often it was said.

This book was awesome! I finished it in a few hours. I felt like it was missing things at the beginning, there were references to events and things that took place before the start of the book. I feel those events should have been included in some way for us to know what was happen, and for me to better connect with the characters. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I absolutely love this book. I couldn’t put it down. It gives off Percy Jackson vibe for a bit but once Jayden is introduced you realize there is more romance in then Percy Jackson. The romance doesn’t take over the story at all it is a sun plot that takes over at just the right moments. Each chapter leaves you wanting more. Every character that is introduced has a purpose, even the little ones. The interaction are written in such a way that if they crossed paths again you would would say Yes instead of ugh not again. The only bad thing about this is boom is that I have to wait for more of them. 10 out 10 would recommend to anyone who like Greek mythology.
Offspring of mythical gods and goddesses gives me warm fuzzies just like Hercules television series. Ironically the starring role is none other than Hercules's sister.
She finds love and friendship while attempting to find the missing students at the academy she attends and Zeus who was never part of her growing years asks her to find his spark.
I could share her feelings and the ups and downs of her academic life among other offspring students of other mythical gods but I won't because that ruins the story and ultimately your enjoyment as well.
Zeus' Spark is a great read and I enjoyed the take on the demigods saving Halfling Academy. The characters are intriguing and well developed and really brought this story to life. The storyline is captivating and held my attention from the first page until the last. This book helped me escape the horrible week I've had even if just for a few hours. After that ending, I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.
Beth, the daughter of Zeus, attends Halfling Academy where demigods are "educated". When trouble and danger threaten to erupt and students go missing, the Oracle sends Beth, accompanied by her friends Raven, Greyson, and Jayden, on a Quest to find Zeus stolen spark. That seems to trigger a ton of monsters chasing after Beth. Can Beth learn to trust her former boyfriend, Jayden, who will be instrumental in her quest? Will they be successful on their mission? Or will the evil one bringing the monsters back succeed in overthrowing Zeus and destroying the world?

3.5/5 ⭐️
Zeus Spark by Ember Raine Winters is the first book in the series called the Halfling Academy. This book was a great start to this series and I really enjoyed reading it, from the start it keeps your attention. The characters were really good and I liked that Beth was so independent and strong even if she doubts herself at times. If you like Percy Jackson and want a book that gives you those vibes then you should definitely read this book.
Good book, but I see a lot of similarities to Percy Jackson. This is a more adult version of it and the lead character is a female and Zeus daughter, but the similarities are still there. If you liked Percy Jackson then you will like this book also. I loved the female leads but hated the stupid men who thought they had to protect them even though they were the ones kicking more ass than the boys.

This book…I’m so confused. Look, it’s not great. At all. Yet I found myself enjoying it and hating it all at the same time! Firstly, you feel like you’ve been dumped into the middle of the book, and a huge chunk is missing from the start. The author references things that have happened that seem like they’d be really, REALLY important for the understanding of the world, the characters and the story. They’re just casually dropped into conversation and you have to just wonder at what exactly happened and hope you’re given more information later (you’re not). Secondly, this is a blatant rip off of Percy Jackson, with smut added for good measure. Although it doesn’t have even a fraction of the charm of its source and the writing can’t hope to live up to Riordan, it’s not terrible to read. It’s easy and quick enough…possibly because there is no weight to any of it. The world-building is non-existent, the characters are one dimensional and mostly terrible people, the love story is oh so stupid, the ‘peril that they face is ridiculously easily beaten every single time and it feels like you’re left in the middle of the action - but not a well written cliffhanger. It just randomly stops and we have to read book 2 to find any sort of conclusion, if you can cope with reading another one! I’m usually optimistic with books and if I read book one I’m usually in for the series, but this is such a tough book to digest I just don’t know what book two will be like - and I’m apprehensive!
Now some specifics…Beth is not my favourite MC. She is immature (I mean, she is college aged so she’s not going to be mature anyway, but still!), holds grudges like no other despite not knowing the full story and flips and flops between decisions, but she is brave and selfless when it matters. Jayden is trash. Just awful. Misogynist trying to hide behind knight in shining armour. Violates consent all over the place by touching and grabbing Beth - and other characters - whenever he feels like it. Weirdly though, the time he gets what he wants (Beth, in bed) his own consent, as well as Beth’s, is ignored yet he feels terrible for her as he knew it’s not what she wanted. So he does understand boundaries and consent, he just ignores them most of the time. He undermines Beth, he thinks she’s incapable of making her own decisions and that she cannot protect herself or complete a task by herself, despite the fact that she is technically more powerful than he is as the daughter of Zeus! He’s also jealous and rushes to violence immediately when another man shows interest in Beth. He’s just The Worst™️. Raven is great, despite the lack of character development, apart from her support of Jayden and her constant pushing Beth to forgive him despite supposedly being her best friend. It’s not a very best mate move to me, you are supposed to support your friends while they work through their problems not try to force someone on them when they tell you repeatedly that they’re not ready! No matter how many times Beth flip flopped about Jayden, Raven should be rooting for her friend to find happiness, with or without a man that hurt her, whether you think what happened was ok or not. Friendship 101. Greyson is…there. The gods were the most fun and likeable characters and they were barely in it.
The worst thing though, THE WORST THING, was the hotel roofie. It’s not a sex scene if neither party can consent, it’s rape. Pure and simple. So I can’t even say that this book has much spice, but I can say that there’s trigger warnings for rape and SA. I hated it. It’s was used as a way to get out of the corner the author had written herself into, yet she almost immediately flips it again and makes Beth hate Jayden again. My head was spinning with how often Beth changed her bloody mind!
I’m just so confused by this book! After all of the above, after all the issues I have with it, I still quite enjoyed reading it! I got through it quickly - it’s not exactly deep - and found myself wanting to get back to it. I like stories about Greek mythology, and especially demi-gods as the dynamic fascinates me, so this at least had some aspects that I enjoyed. The monsters and legends were pretty well researched, and it feels like most of the work went into that instead of creating characters that feel real and that you don’t feel like choking out every second page. As someone who doesn’t read much romance (and I usually stick to romcoms as I don’t like too much smut/spice) it wasn’t fully my taste, and I didn’t realise that it was college+ age so wasn’t expecting the attempt at smut, so romance readers may LOVE this one.
I have struggled with the rating for this, at times it was almost a ⭐️/DNF but at times the feeling of enjoyment got me almost to ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. So, I guess I’ll go with 2.75, rounded up to ⭐️⭐️⭐️…a confusing experience all round for me! Am I reading the follow up at some point? Yep - and I’m already cringing!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. Thank you to BookSirens and Ember-Raine Winters. As always, all opinions are my own.
This review is going to sound really negative at first but I promise it gets better. When the book begins it feels like you missed a chunk of the book. It doesn’t read like the first book of a series and also has a serious lack of world building making it hard to stay interested. You don’t really feel any emotion from the characters either. Also, I know that the book is a romance so the fmc and mmc need to get together somehow but with Raven supposed to be the fmc Beth’s best friend, she seriously sucks and is always trying to push the mmc Jayden on her even though she knows he hurt he badly even going as far to defend him to her. It’s not a realistic experience to me. There’s also talk of people and events that clearly happened and played a role in things but are only mentioned and as a reader those are things I would’ve loved to see and would’ve allowed me to better connect with the book. I wouldn’t have even minded the missing pieces if the author had been more tactful about how they’re introduced rather than just throwing them in like oh yeah this happened as well. There’s a whole backstory to how Beth made it to the academy and got her powers and literally we just hear about it which sucks. Furthermore, Jayden’s character was annoying, overbearing, and overall just not a favorite of mine. ****SLIGHT SPOILER***He tried to hold on to Raven so tight that he was stifling to me and often causing problems where there were none because he refused to see her as an individual who was fully capable. It was honestly kind of masochistic in my opinion and that drove me insane. He’s truly a possessive d***head of I’m being completely honest. Also without a reverse harem warning it just seems that in the end Beth is hypocritical. Now for the things I liked. The premise of the book was a great hook making me unable to wait to read the book. The supporting characters we also really great especially Raven and I would love to read more about her. There was a show of growth in the book which is always enjoyable when reading. I also liked the inclusion of all the gods rather than making them something that’s just mentioned or making them all vengeful or uninvolved which often happens when they are portrayed as parents in books. Overall, the book wasn’t a bad read but it definitely needs work. I would potentially recommend it to others but that comes with the warning that for me personally I did not see anything good about the book until about 50% in.

This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This book was hard to get through. Not only did it seem like a blatant Percy Jackson rip-off... Zeus's stolen Spark (lightning bolt in PJ), special place where demigods were safe, a perilous journey to get there, cellphones and electronics were beacons leading straight to the demigod, protagonist getting there later in life, the magical wards failing to the safe place allowing mythological creatures to enter, the malcontent was seemingly am insider... it was all a bit too heavy handed with the PJ similarities.
Then there was the sophomoric writing... it was painful to read, especially the cringy dialogue. The MCs were supposed to be in college yet they acted and spoke like middle school/highschoolers at best. The teased, nascent amore was WAY too aggressive and our MC, Beth, responded with even more aggressive reactions even though she secretly pined for him... it read uncomfortably... NO MEANS NO (except she was secretly aching for him). In fact everyone wanted our MC with a vigor that was quite unsettling... maybe that was addressed towards the end but I just couldn't sit through it. Admittedly, I might not be the target demographic here BUT I am a biblioaddict of many genres and all in all... this was a strong PASS for me.
Overall: This book was a lot of things but original wasn't one of them. It drew HEAVILY from Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. Granted, Percy Jackson was an absolutely awesome series and one that would lend well to slight homages, BUT this was blatant and not even a good knockoff soooo regrettably I DNFd at ~ 32%... it is possible that the book found its own stride later on but I just couldn't get there. It would have done well with some more originality as well as tightening those cringy/loose areas of dialogue.

It reminded me of Rick Riordan's Greek/Roman mythology series. I enjoyed revisiting myths, learning about monsters, and the constant fast pacing of the story. I was able to read the book quickly because I wanted to know what happened next regarding the mission.
I found the storyline to be interesting, but the I think the book could use a little more work. There were a lot of explanations/clarifications that I found unnecessary and frustrating, and sometimes there were sentences or dialogue that contradicted each other. Beth and Jayden's relationship seems super toxic; I couldn't root for them at all. Them having intercourse while drugged wasn't really addressed either.
I felt like there was a missing book with Beth finding out she's a demigod. Enough information is provided for me to have an idea of what happened, but I still have no clue how Raven and Greyson met.
I wasn't expecting the erotica present, so a disclaimer would be nice (especially for those underage interested in reading it). I didn't particularly enjoy all the cussing, constant anger, insults, and hostility. It felt too exaggerated for me and made me dislike the characters. Everyone, except Ares, Zeus, Thia, Raven, and Adrian were jerks. All the "male posturing" was tiresome and annoying as well. I don't particularly like when most of the guys (literally only excluding Greyson, who's mated) fall for the protagonist. On a side note, how did Beth know how to use the whip? Simply through magic, or from previous training?
I do want to know who's behind the monsters and the kidnapping of Hermes' kids and why, why the items of power are being stolen, and the Academy's role in all of it. Is there really a mole? Also, what's up with Jayden and Mia?
Overall, pretty enjoyable.

If you love Greek mythology then you'll likely enjoy this book. There are a few adult scenes in the book as well as a ton of swearing which doesn't bother me but may bother some readers. In general it was a good fairly fast paced story.
The only thing that really threw me off a bit that the characters kept referring to the event of them picking up Beth, the main character, and bringing her to the academy but we never read about the event in it's entirety. The characters all allude to it many times so it felt like it was something that should have been at the beginning of the story somewhere.
The story is read from Beth's perspective the entire time and she is being targeted by mythological monsters that keep coming after her because she is the daughter of Zeus. They find out later that some of the demigods from the academy are being kidnapped and a small group of them are sent to try to find and rescue them. (skipping a lot of the details to avoid spoiling the story) There's a bit of tension between Beth, Jayden, and Dax much to Beth's dismay through most of the story as Jayden is one of the demigods sent with Beth to find the ones who were kidnapped. They run into many troubles along the way and have to figure out how to handle a variety of ancient monsters who won't stay dead.
Over all I enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to mythology lovers who are looking for something that borrows from mythology to build it's world. You meet a decent number of the Gods as well as the creatures they fight. I'm excited to see where this goes in the second book though it ends with a bit of drama. :b.

I asked to get an Advanced Reader Copy of this book because its blurb looked interesting. I mean Greek Gods, Demigods, and Monsters, three of my all-time favorite things to read about all in one book! What could possibly go wrong?
Well, what went wrong was that this story mimicked Rick Riordan's "Percy Jackson" series far too closely. First, we have a bunch of demigods in a school setting (which seemed okay but close to a camp setting just for demigods), then we have demigods going missing, so I thought okay this is similar but different. Then The author had to add in the entire "I didn't know I was a demigod and Zeus's daughter", then add in "oh my mom got killed by a monster" and we basically have Percy Jackson changed into a girl. And oh did I mention she had to find the spark of Zeus? Much like Percy having to go search for the Lightning Bolt. And it just went downhill from there.
I love books about the gods. But I also want ORIGINAL stories. Sure there were some aspects of the story that were original. But far too many of the plot ideas came directly from the Percy Jackson series.
Oh did I mention it's a mystery? Well, that never gets solved so I assume that will be solved in a later book.
I really wish I could give it more stars, but I simply didn't enjoy the story enough and I REALLY hated the main characters because I thought they were sophomoric at best. And I really did not like Beth, and the entire boy issue just about made me want to smack her senseless.
Some may enjoy the story, but for me, it just was okay.
This is the first book in the Halfling Academy series by Ember-Raine Winters. Excellent book if you love Greek Mythology!
So much wrapped into a thrilling adventure. There were times I felt things were repeated more than necessary, but it didn't affect my overall feeling of the books storyline. Also, while each character has times where I feel they are a little childish and immature for 20 year old college demigods. Buttttt, I do enjoy the playfulness, and it makes the story light and, at times, even funny.
Beth, Jayden, and Raven are the three chosen ones. While they will get help along the way, the schools safety rests on their shoulders.
Beth is the only living demigod of Zeus. Jayden is the only living demigod of Hades. Raven is one of eight children of Ares.
While the book is action-packed with the demigods fighting monsters, there is also a sub romance plot between Jayden and Beth. They may trust each other when it comes to fighting, but can they trust each other with their hearts?
Not only do they need to fight monster, save the missing Hermes children, but now the Gods items of power are going missing. They must retrieve Zeus' spark of the consequences could be dire.
I absolutely love how the author weaves all sorts of different Mythology stories to fit the quest and adventure the demigods are on. I can't wait to read the next book and find out who is behind all of the chaos.
This is a story of a magic academy with demigods; children of gods and shifters that are on a journey to save the stolen childrenof Hermes and to retrieve Zeus' spark. There is something happeningwithin the schoolthat makes them think that there is a mole at work. Their journey is fraught with danger and disguise, but it's also argument after argument among the main characters. Jayden (son of Hades) and Bethany (daughter of Zeus) have something going but there is no information about how they got to this place. Beth is furious with Jayden and keeps pushing him away for hurting her and losing her trust. Was it that Mia always had her hands all over him and he didn't push her away? Or was there something much more serious that happened in their past. Even though this is the first book in the series, I feel as if I've been dropped into the middle of a story without context. The story dragged because of all inner thoughts and turmoil being expressed and it felt as if the story were taking place in their minds. I would have appreciated it more without the repetition and anger during the fight scenes. There is no ending since it continues into the next book.
The general concept of the book is ok but the writing is awful. Its like it was written by a teenager that put it together without actually planning anything out.
Is there a book before this that I missed because there was no back story at all. It just seemed like we should already know what happened.
The guys are super annoying on how they treat the girls. Raven is an awful friend constantly telling her that she is overreacting and not being fair with jayden. He was a super dusche the whole book and just kept pushing himself on her instead of trying to make anything right. Seriously keep your hands to yourself bro. Then she forgives him just because. Then is shocked because he hasn't changed.
The whole "its not possible, right?" Got old really quick. They are demi gods, why are they so dumbfounded by everything. Also they apparently know barely anything about Greek mythology.
Also, how did gods and demi gods not know about werewolves and vice versa. Just duh!
Every time the author had a chance to make this book good the decided to go in a different direction.
On a positive note, I do like that raven is a badass and Ares is a good father.
Something is wrong at the academy, but no one wants to admit it. Instead it falls to the students to figure out what is going on. That is quite a challenge for them, but our heroine is determined to give it a go. We shall see how that goes.
This is book one of the series, so a good place to start.
This is an urban fantasy story with an academy setting, this one involving the ancient Greek gods. The story is well written and easy to read with a well developed setting. There are a lot of the usual academy tropes, but there are some unique elements as well. The characters are a diverse cast which gives us lots of opportunities to interactions. The story itself moves at a good pace and includes a nice blend of action, mystery and magic. Overall, I found this to be an excellent start to a series and I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Highly recommended.

I'm giving this book 2.5 and rounding to 3 because math is like that.
Demigods, Beth (Zeus), Raven (Ares), Jayden (Hades), and shifter, Greyson, embarked on a journey to save the children of Hermes and to retrieve Zeus' spark.
The story itself wasn't bad, but it read like a first draft to me. Some things were too much like PeJackson'skson and should have been altered to make them original. There were several places where one of the characters said something, then the author clarified it in the following sentence. Readers aren't dumb. They don't need everything explained when it's already been said. The dialog was clunky and didn't feel at all natural, and Beth's hot and cold attitude toward Jayden got old.
If you liked Percy Jackson but wanted more cussing and sex, this is the book for you.
Beth, her friend Raven, Raven’s boyfriend Greyson, and Beth’s kind of ex Jayden must go on a quest to save some of their classmates that have been kidnapped and find Zeus spark that has been stolen. They encounter many perils along the way and the injuries start before they even know they are supposed to leave as the school gets attacked by monsters. Beth has a tendency to overreact to most things Jayden says and does due to her still smarting because of her idea of what he has done. I wish the stuff with Mia and Jayden was explained more. I really liked the spicy scenes. I liked the help along the way. The going back and forth of the guys wanting to be protective and the girls telling them they don’t need protection got a little wearing.

This is a very confusing read. The first chapters start off as if you know what's going on, and the explanation are given randomly and not clearly so you still don't understand the animosity between the main characters, why suddently there are people trying to get in between them, why the male lead is so clingy and not getting what no means, and why everybody is apparently very dumb and only the female and male lead characters are understanding what is obvious and none of the adults picked up on the obvious... I didn't like the whole setting, nor did I like the characters which are unconsistent with their age and switch behaviour at random and too dramatic for it to be believable. It was hard to fininsh the book. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
