From the bestselling author of Hello, Darkness and Smash Cut comes another steamy thriller of murder, love, and betrayal featuring a Savannah homicide detective fighting attraction in the heat of the South.

When Detective Sergeant Duncan Hatcher is summoned to the home of Judge Cato Laird in the middle of the night to investigate a fatal shooting, he knows discretion and kid-glove treatment will be key to staying in the judge’s good graces and keeping his job.

It’s an open-and-shut case: Elise, the judge’s beautiful trophy wife, interrupted a burglary and killed the intruder in self-defense. Yet Duncan is suspicious of the beautiful woman’s story of innocence and his gut tells him her account of the shooting is only partially true.

Determined to learn the dead man’s connection to the Lairds, Duncan investigates further but soon finds his career, and integrity, in jeopardy. Despite his suspicions, Duncan is increasingly drawn to Elise―even if she is a married woman, a proven liar, and a murder suspect.

When Elise seeks Duncan out privately, he initially dismisses her incredible allegation as the manipulative lie of a guilty woman. But if she’s telling the truth, then that single fatal gunshot at her home takes on even more sinister significance, possibly involving Duncan’s nemesis, the brutal crime lord Robert Savich.

And then Elise goes missing...

I am on the verge of jumping out my window just so I can make this unending rage go away.

I have no words to emphasise how much of a disgusting character Duncan (H) was. He made me sit silently in my room and just cry from the way he (and everyone) victim blamed Elise (h) while also treating her like the lowest of shits. Like an actual blow up doll created for only one thing: fucking. Why? Because she is pretty. And what other functions does a pretty girl have except her vagina? According to Duncan - NONE.

“Do you honestly expect me to believe—
“It’s the truth!
“—that you were in a hotel room with a man—
“A friend .
“—and didn’t get fucked?
She inhaled a quick breath. She seemed about to speak, then thought better of it. Her lips compressed.
Duncan smirked. “That’s what I thought.

nah....now WHY AM I CRYING AGAIN OMFG. The things he said to her sometimes had me shattered. He was talking about her male best friend who committed suicide btw🙂. They just couldn't believe. How could a woman. An attractive woman. Ever be in a presence of a man...and not GET FUCKED. how about YOU GET FUCKED YOU FUCKING CUNTS.

Oof okay. Breathe Anna, breathe.

Behold...another conversation. Between a victim desperately begging for help and the police officer who was supposed to. Aka Heroine & Hero.

“Just please trust me.
“Trust you? He laughed. “Not on a bet.
“What do I have to do for you to believe me? Turn up dead?
“That would be a start.

I HATE HIM, I HATE THE SIDE CHARACTERS, I EVEN HATE THE HEROINE BECAUSE NOT ONCE DID SHE OR ANYONE ELSE ACKNOWLEDGE HOW FUCKING DISGUSTING ALL THIS IS!!!!!!

I didn't even touch the surface of everything and everyone that is wrong with this book. And I won't, because it is bound to put me in a rage that'll SEND ME TO A PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL. I don't remember the last time I have actually despised a book with such fervour. This is personal. I hope every single copy BURNS in the everlasting depth of hell.

In summary: Have you ever watched the movie ? This is EXACTLY how the heroine was treated by everyone (including the hero) the entire time.

Desire, such as he’s never felt before pulsed through him

I really enjoyed this one. The last SB book I read was a bit of a letdown so I was a tad wary of starting another one by her.

"Do you play?"

Love her male characters. Duncan is a cop. Dedicated to the job. Tough, gruff, grouchy. Loved his partner too, Dee Dee would love her to get a HEA.

"I don’t believe we get to choose who we fall in love with, do you?"

As with a lot of suspense/mystery novels, we are better off knowing less about the plot so I did not really read any reviews.

Prejudice found fertile ground in every race. It recognized no borders ...

Another solid read by this author.

My love affair continues with yet another fantastic book by Sandra Brown. I will say though for this one it took a little longer for me to lock in to the love but it happened and that is all that is important! :)

In Ricochet we are taken to beautiful Savannah, Georgia and Lady’s Island, South Carolina. SB writes so descriptively that you can close your eyes for a moment and imagine that you were there.

The main characters were awesome. I really enjoyed both Duncan and Elise. The secondary characters rounded out the story perfectly and I have to say Dee Dee, Duncan’s lady cop friend, had quite the spirit and every time she came across the pages there was attitude with grace and a little something else that I haven’t been able to put my finger on.

I loved Duncan Hatcher. He’s the hero in this one. He was heavenly. He was sexy, broody and a cop through and through.

Elise Laird made for quite a heroine. She was a woman willing to play with fire whether she got burned or not. She was determined, passionate and had an inner beauty that didn’t go unnoticed.

You know what I am about to say right? I can’t say much about the plot because the littlest thing could give away something that could spoil your reading experience.

Just know that Sandra Brown delivers that suspense. She has you questioning everything and everyone. The plot brings about some crazy stuff and your mind will be spinning. SB makes the various spots in the plot so vivid..

The unsuspecting talents that she gives her characters…

And how she weaves in romance and sexy moments…

Then she brings everything full circle at the end with beautiful moments

And yet another beautiful location

Ricochet is another highly recommended Sandra Brown book for all of you to read.

A very good and interesting story. I love how Ms. Brown's stories are complicated and how she resolves the complications! :)

So, why only 4 stars?

It's because the romantic part of the story seemed rushed. I couldn't feel the connection between Duncan and Elise. I couldn't understand, besides the insta-lust, why Duncan fell in love with Elisa.

They didn't have very much contact, they didn't interact enough, he hated her, didn't trust her, suspected her of murder and of being a money-grabbing cold woman... So why did he thought himself in love with her?

Elise also fell in love with Duncan without actually knowing him.

They were just bang and were in love... I felt like there were large chuncks of the book missing. The part where their attraction has evolved from lust to love through some action, some dialogue, someting... *shrug*

I just couldn't feel tha love growing part...

That being said, I enjoy the mistery part, the revenge part and the investigation part. Those were excellent!

Things get started when Detective Duncan Hatcher is called to the home of Judge Cato Laird's home where his wife, Elise had shot and killed an intruder. What follows during the investigation is lots of intrigue and subterfuge.

It's an interesting story with a slow start and an exciting second half. The ending had me in a twist and confused so that's a plus. However, I found it difficult to connect with anyone, especially Elise and Hatcher's partner, Dee Dee. He also ran hot and cold so often he left me on the sidelines.

It's not my most favorite but I still enjoyed the story. 3.5 stars

I was struggling with this book for almost a year. The suspense part is actually quite good and it is the only reason I finally finished it. Really, there were few times when I was seriously thinking about giving up.

It's all because the romance part is so unrealistic and annoying. There are no feelings between Duncan and Elise. I just couldn't believe there is anything between them. Also, I like Duncan only in the slightest part and I completely don't care about Elise. They don't look real to me.

I was really disappointed, heard so many good things about this book. What a pity!

Overall Opinion: This wasn’t nearly as good as I had hoped. I liked the mystery aspect and how it took a while for everything to be revealed. I just didn’t like the romance. At all. It was major instalove that didn’t make any sense other than lust. It actually irritated me because it felt so out of nowhere and majorly undeveloped. I didn’t feel like we got into much depth with the characters and that might have also contributed to not feeling their connection to each other. Overall, It sadly was a disappointing read for me.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Elise and Duncan’s story. Duncan is a police detective and he is enraged when a obviously known criminal gets out on a murder with a mistrial. Soon after, he gets called out to the judge’s home where his wife, Elise, has murdered who she claims is an intruder. Something doesn't add up for Duncan and his partner and they don’t let it go with a simple self defense case. The more time Duncan spends around Elise the more things get more confusing and his attraction for her grows. There are some big secrets revealed, some suspenseful scenes, and some sexy times...and they get a HFN ending.

Point Of View (POV): This alternated between focusing (mainly on) Duncan, Elise, and other side characters in 3rd person narrative.

Overall Pace of Story: Good. I thought it flowed well and I never skimmed.

Instalove:Yes! It came out of nowhere for me! It honestly made me think, “Whoa! Where’d that come from? and was rather irritating.

H (Hero) rating: 3 stars. Duncan. He was alright. I didn’t feel like we really got a good idea on who he was supposed to be though.

h (heroine) rating: 3 stars. Elise. She was alright. She kept her truths close when I felt like she needed to come clean sooner.

Sadness level: Low, no tissues needed

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Mild. They have very little little tension, chemistry, and scenes -- and not so much it takes away from the story.

Descriptive sex: Yes

OW (Other Woman)/OM (Other Man) drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: Yes, but not descriptive

Cheating: Yes

Separation: No, because I didn’t consider them “together in order for it to be a ”separation.

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This ended abruptly with what I would call a HFN ending, b7t 8m sure others would be fine with calling this an HEA

Safety: This one is probably Not Safe for most safety gang readers depending on personal preferences.

2 ½ stars. It was not fun. I was angry at Elise for more than half the book.

Elise asks Duncan for help and says her husband wants to kill her. When Duncan asks what her husband’s motive is, she won’t tell him. Therefore, he has no reason to believe or help her. Finally at about the 3/4 mark, she tells him “why. Then Duncan helps her and the story becomes interesting. I would cut a lot of the first 2/3 or so of the book. There was too much hypothesizing, pondering, and wondering. I did enjoy the last part. I enjoyed what happened to the bad guys at the end. There was a happy ending with a little romance. But the first 2/3 or so made it not worth recommending.

A similar thing happened when Duncan asked Elise about her meetings in hotel rooms with Coleman. She said they were “friends about 20 times. But she never clarified or gave details to Duncan. Duncan did some investigating and got a different opinion, and by the end of the book, I was still unclear. I can assume something, but I wish the author had been clearer. I was annoyed that again Elise never gave details about this to Duncan when she was asking for his trust and help.

The narrator was Dennis Boutsikaris. I did not like his southern accent and tone of voice. He says too many words with a down-tone in the last syllable like: no-oo, ha-rd to sa-ay. I could take a little of it, but after a while it irritated me.

There were about four sex scenes, briefly done. One was very pleasant, passionate, and nicely done.

DATA:
Narrative mode: 3rd person. Unabridged audiobook length: 12 hrs and 40 mins. Swearing language: moderate but rarely used. Sexual language: mild. Number of sex scenes: about 4 briefly done. Setting: current day Georgia. Book copyright: 2006. Genre: mystery suspense with a little romance.

Se mantiene el suspenso, la intriga y la trama policial acostumbrado de los libros de Brown. Sin embargo éste me enganchó un poquito menos, ya que no tiene tantos giros inesperados y todo ocurre de manera más o menos previsibles.

My review:

As with all of my SB reviews, I have to keep it short and avoid spoilers because (especially with this book) you REALLY need to read the book and be left in the dark until details present themselves.

Besides one aspect that I could have done without, this book literally kept me on the edge of my seat and was one of my favorites by her. I enjoyed that unlike some of her other books, this one definitely had more romance in it. You know, besides his one mess up (in my eyes, which was actually understandable) that the hero was 200% smitten with Elise from the very beginning.

Lately, Sandra Brown has been the only author to really keep me interested in her books to the point where I don't want to put the book down. If I wasn't pregnant and could deal with less sleep, I would be eating these books right up!

On to the next :)

All the way through this book I felt certain that it would be a five-star read, but the last forty or fifty pages really felt like a let down. Sandra Brown's crime novels always combine the sensuality and raw sexual energy of a great romance novel with the hard-hitting action of a classic crime novel. The problem is, in the last fifty pages the romance wins out over all the realistic crime drama. Villains who have been fearless, deadly and resourceful for years start making stupid mistakes just so the lovers can live happily ever after. Now if this was a romance novel by Lisa Kleypas or Mary Balogh, I'd just say "fair enough." But when you call your book "Ricochet" that implies an emphasis on realism, not romance.

I did enjoy the characters. Sandra Brown has her own take on romance, and there are certain types who are fixtures in every novel. The bored trophy wife. The bad boy cop. The corrupt older man. The vicious crime lord from the slums. What I really enjoyed was how Elise blossoms in the course of the book, going from the rich man's plaything to a heroic avenger and winning the heart of Detective Duncan Hatcher. Elise say she's a big movie fan, and I loved how classic movies really shaped the story line. The plot was an amazing combination of LAURA with Gene Tierney (mysterious beauty disappears, hard-edged cop falls in love with her memory.) And there were elements of THE MALTESE FALCON ("my life is in danger -- I can't tell you why! Oh, but you're so brave and strong, you must help me!") And there were even a few moments that reminded me of THE BIG LEBOWSKI. ("Young trophy wife -- in the parlance of our times -- kidnaps herself because, hey, she's gotta feed the monkey!")

The best thing about this book was how Duncan Hatcher falls more and more under Elise's spell, and becomes more and more aware of all the different sides of her enchanting personality. The worst part of this book was the two bumbling villains. I especially hated how the drug lord is presented as being evil simply because he's "mixed race," i.e. a light-skinned black man with bright blue eyes. That sort of stuff should have been buried with William Faulkner.

⭐️⭐️ two stars -

I don’t think that I care for Brown’s writing style. “Ricochet makes the fourth or fifth book I’ve read from her now, and each one has ended up with a two or three star rating. She’s a very good author, so I’m going to chalk it up to the fact that I just don’t particularly care for the direction she often ventures off to.

I usually pick up one of her books when I’m in the mood for a good romantic suspense and I don’t feel like reading another Linda Howard. Variety being the spice of life, and all that. How boring would it be to read the same thing over and over, right?

This book centers around our Hero and is more of a mystery thriller. Nearly all of the suspenseful action and character development centers around him, and there is very little said about the heroine here. What is mentioned about her I didn’t particularly care for, and by the end of the story I actually wanted our H to find a new love interest and walk off into the sunset with a new leading lady.

Overall, I wouldn’t particularly recommend this novel from Brown. I did enjoy her “Mirror Image more than this one (even with that book’s problems) and you can find my review of “Mirror here 👉 /review/show...

I struggled to finish this book, “Ricochet. Not out of boredom, but mostly due to the frustrating fact that the story just wasn’t veering in the direction that I wanted it to go to. It was more a struggle against the tide for me to get to the ending.

Here are my main issues with it:

1- this was billed as a romantic suspense, but it’s really more of a mystery thriller. I primarily read romance. When I’m in the mood for a detective thriller, I’ll read Michael Connelly 💁‍♀

2- all of the character development centered around our Hero, which was nice since I liked his character. There was little plot development strictly centered around our hapless heroine. She was more of a brainless sex bomb. Not a good look for a heroine.

3- little to no romance. Brown smashed all of the romance together in at the end (after the 85% mark or so). It came off as more of an add-on so this book could be billed as “romantic suspense 💁‍♀

Overall, not a book I would recommend. I was too frustrated with the heroine, and especially the finale. For such a plodding plot, it all felt rushed and jumbled at the end. Not Brown’s best.

Two small stars.

3 Stars - Just okay

Maybe was it the audiobook narrator but wasn’t as good as most of ’s suspense romances usually are for me. I had a hard time to believe these characters and didn’t like the heroine as much as I should. Mr is a new narrator for me and I by now know I don’t like his way to do female voices, he at last did it a less enjoyable book.

Recommendation: read instead for audiobook listening to this one. I’m sure it actually is a much better story than I experienced. 🔫🔫🔫

I love Sandra Brown's twisty romantic suspense novels although Ricochet wasn't one of my favourites. Loved the hero Duncan Hatcher... but what was he thinking! The insta love/lust just didn't ring true for me and when the reasons for Elise's machinations were revealed the plot wasn't as strong as some of Sandra Brown's other suspense masterpieces.

As in all romances the man gets his woman...sigh! In this older Sandra Brown mystery, it just takes a little more time than usual. A Detective and Judge are at odds with each other, then the Judge's beautiful wife enters the picture. Three murders and a missing woman later the story has turned full circle and the truth is then known. All lives happily ever after...

Smaller plot holes than usual with this suspense/mystery.

The male protagonist is a detective, but rather than going for the old hard-boiled Sam Spade type, you get a piano playing, Boy Scout detective that has morals and ethics. Does he make mistakes? Oh yeah, but he's a good character.

The tension begins when he meets the wife of a judge he's at odds with. The judge's wife is under suspicion for shooting an intruder and lines are crossed, but who is the real bad guy?

No more from me as this is one suspense story you will want the mysteries to unfold as there are surprises along the way.

I listened to the audio CD. Dennis Boutsikaris, the narrator, is pretty well known as a long time Law and Order regular. He does a pretty good job handling both male and female voices. Thankfully he leaves the Southern accents alone for the most part.

Oh my goodness. This author is just TOO GOOD!!!! I say this as my bleary-eyed self struggles to type, riding on three hours of sleep because I read the entire second half of this book yesterday and stayed up WAY too late to do so.

Absolutely incredible!! I think Ricochet is my new favorite by Sandra Brown, topping even .

And DEFINITELY the most romantic, sensual, steamy book of hers I've read to date. LOVED every word!! <3

I've been reading mostly suspense lately, including a lot of romantic suspense, or "suspense with romantic elements". Unfortunately, too much of it has been mediocre to virtually unreadable. Then I came across a copy of Sandra Brown's "Ricochet" on our shelves at home. I hadn't read anything by Brown yet, but my wife had read "Ricochet" several years ago and enjoyed it, adding it to our "keeper" collection. I picked it up and was hooked in the first few pages. The pacing in the book is just right, the characters are believable (if a little larger than life sometimes), and you have to root for the crusading Savannah detective hero in his risky quest to put some really bad guys behind bars. Brown keeps you guessing most of the way through the book in what has to be one of the more complex plots I've come across lately. Her deft handling of the plot and the pacing made the book hard to put down, and that doesn't happen for me all that often. The ending was thoroughly satisfying.

Sandra Brown is a real "find" for me, and I can't wait to dive in to her extensive backlist of NYT bestsellers.

This signed book was won in a ŷ First Reads giveaway.

Ricochet takes place in Savannah, Georgia. Detective Duncan Hatcher is investigating a murder at a prominent judge’s home. The judge’s wife Elise admits to killing an intruder but Duncan wants to investigate further. To make matters worse, Duncan is attracted to Elise.

I must admit that I really enjoyed reading Ricochet. Ricochet was a very readable book, full of mystery and suspense, sexual tension, and many plot twists.

I loved the characters, especially Elise. Elise married Judge Cato Laird after a short, whirlwind romance. She has never been accepted by his social circle and was seen as a gold digger by most of them. Her marriage appears to be a fairy tale romance and she lives like a queen in a large home and has beautiful clothing, jewellery, a doting husband.
With all of that, Elise is an enigma, a mystery. The reader is never really sure of her motivations, of her fears, nor is the reader exactly sure where her loyalties lie.

Duncan is an interesting character. He is not afraid to say what he thinks, even when it is detrimental to his career. Duncan has had a run in with Judge Cato previously, and the two men do not get along very well. I like Duncan’s investigative style he is more instinctual than procedural. Duncan’s attraction to Elise was so wrong, yet the sexual tension was absolutely delicious.

I like a mystery that keeps me guessing and this one did not disappoint. The plot twists were unexpected and kept me reading right until the last page.

I did find the format of this book a little different. The book is the same width of a mass market paperback, but about an inch taller. This allowed for double spaced print which was easy on the eyes; however it was a little more difficult to hold.

Ricochet is a moderately enjoyable thriller (rating it between 2 and 3). The plot's just interesting enough to keep on reading. There’s a mystery in this novel about the major female character, Elise Laird, and about whether her motives are good or not. I found that aspect of the mystery intriguing, but I thought the author took too long in developing it. In my opinion there are too many long passages in the middle of this book where the police characters speculate about who did what, and why. Overall, something was wrong with the pace of the book. Normally, It never takes me a full week to read a “captivating story. So based on that criteria I can only conclude I wasn’t that captivated, maybe I was even a bit bored.
I had two other problems with this story: One is that I don't buy the romance between Duncan Hatcher (the lead detective) and Elise Laird. It didn't make sense to me. What I could understand is that it was lust at first sight, but how could they fall in a deep lasting love after three conversations (which were actually police interviews?). No I don't buy that. The other problem was Elise’s long term plan, as explained towards the end, to go after Cato Laird and Savich (not going into details here as not give away spoilers), but either she very altruistic and idealistic, or she’s very stupid.
On the other hand, what I absolutely liked about this book was the quality of the relationship between the detectives Dee-dee and Duncan. There's a great sense of normalcy about these two co-workers. I liked the fact they were decent cops, who respected, helped and supported each other. Their interactions and dialogues seemed very real and were the best bits of the book.

This wasn’t Sandra Brown’s best, but it’s not her worst, either. The good was Brown’s ability to build suspense she’s one of the best. But not all of the characters worked for me. Duncan was a little too ruled by his hormones, and sometimes had mood swings that didn’t make much sense. His partner, DeeDee, was essentially the stereotypical homely girl who automatically hates anyone who is pretty whether she has a reason to or not. Elise is intended to be a mystery. You’re never quite sure which side of the equation she’s on, even at the end.

Also, the revenge plot that is the reason for everything made absolutely no sense to me. Without giving away too much, I don’t know what the person wanting revenge was thinking they had no exit strategy. For a supposedly intelligent person, it was weak.

But, Brown does make you think hard about who you suspect and why, and that’s one of the reasons why I read her books.

I normally love Sandra Brown books but I thought this one was poor. The plot, storyline and characters were incredibly weak. It was utterly boring and so full of stupidity that I was hardly able to read it all the way through. A downer all the way. The worst part was Elise's character. I had not simpathy for her. She was unpleasant, deceptive and dishonest. A pain in the neck. And don't even get me started on the unrealistic romance and the infidelity angle. Sorry, I absolutely hate cheating in stories. I don't care if her husband was a criminal. I like heroines I can admire and whose actions and emotions make sense. My least favorite SB book. Utter Disappointment.
